Name
Allan Dagursson

"Garlic"

AKA:
"Takagi Kibayoshi" (高木 牙吉)
"Cheng Rey Tjieh" (郑瑞杰)
"Nu Aung" (နုအောင်)

Age
47

Sex
Male

Position
Cook / Enforcer

Appearance
Allan Dagursson is a shorter-than-average Nordic man, standing at a mere 175cm and weighing just over 60kg, barely within the acceptable range. He keeps his dark golden hair cropped short, his fringe barely exceeding his eyebrows; he doesn't comb his hair, choosing instead to run through it with his fingers. He usually wears a short sleeved, well pressed office shirt with office pants and dark coloured loafers; after he bathes (when preparing to sleep), he wears a t-shirt and shorts, and flip-flops if he is walking around any more than he usually would.

Allan doesn't wear glasses, but he is often seen with a pair of aviator sunglasses clipped to his shirt's collar.

He is often seen as having a jaw trapped somewhere between oval and square, and a stubble that never seems to grow beyond a rudimentary stipple. Allan himself notes, with some despondency, that while he has "sick abs", his obliques are rather incongruously saggy.

Personality
World weary and lethargic, Allan Dagursson has seen just about enough to call himself a "veteran of life", and yet not enough to leave permanent scars in his mind. His frequent travelling in his youth (mainly to try out different cuisines) has exposed him to many different cultures.

He tends to be rather introverted, only speaking (in an excessively polite and somewhat lacklustre fashion) when he is spoken to, and never making any unnecessary comment.

Biography
Born in 2300, Allan was raised by a single mother in the lower middle class of Reykjavík, the bizarre capital of Iceland. He attended school up to the secondary level, after which he decided to stop, as both he and his mother felt that the lessons taught in school were "irrelevant" and "detached from reality". Allan decided to take up a part time job in a mid-tier restaurant as a kitchen hand; it was this job that ignited his love for cooking. Two years later, the 18 year old boy had saved up enough cash to fly out of the country, something which, at that point, had been a lifelong dream for him. After convincing his mother to let him go (claiming he wanted new opportunities), he bought a plane ticket to Kyoto, Japan.

Upon reaching the ultramodern city, Allan was culture shocked; not only did he not speak Japanese, he was also left with the equivalent of 50,000 yen, barely enough to get by. With no choice, and with only cooking skills learned from the restaurant back home, Allan signed up for a job at a Japanese restaurant in the suburbs.

Fortunately for him, the executive chef at said restaurant spoke English with some degree of fluency, and Allan soon learned bits and pieces of Japanese from him. He spent 10 years working at the restaurant, brushing up his Japanese quite a bit, and even giving himself a Japanese name (because his Icelandic name was rather difficult to write out).

War broke out, however; Kyoto was bombed to kingdom come by the forces of an unknown rogue army, and Allan (or Takagi, as he was known) was forced to leave. He bought the cheapest plane ticket he could find, which brought him to Fuzhou in China. On the flight (which was, fortunately, uneventful), Allan taught himself a few Chinese phrases, and came up with a generic Chinese name for himself, lest he repeat the same experience he might have gone through in Japan had he not met his first boss. Upon landing, Allan immediately got to work finding a cheap house and a workplace, settling for a low-end Japanese buffet in some random street.

It was certainly much more sleazy than his previous restaurant, but Allan decided that it would have to make do; in any case, he had 10 years of experience making Japanese food. This would be a piece of cake.

Just two years later, however, the Confederation of Fujian declared war on Taiwan, and Allan, sick and tired of having to dodge incendiaries and other such insanity, stole a motorcycle in the heat of a gang fight, crossing the border into Myanmar (Burma). He had no time to learn the language, but due to his Icelandic passport, the border control let him through. Iceland, after all, had nothing to do with Myanmar at that point in time.

Allan was barely able to learn a couple of words by listening to a train station announcement and looking at a corresponding sign. He gave himself a random name strung together from two random Burmese words, but soon found that this would never do. He was already 47 years old, and he was relocating and jumping about like mad, with barely enough money each time.

He decided, once and for all, that he would get a single job, one that would pay him till retirement, and then he would fly to a godforsaken place with nice scenery and live out the rest of his days in peace. Of course, there was the job to worry about first...

If need be I can always turn Lucy into the ship captain but I'd rather not. She doesn't really have that leadership aspect to her personality.

Probably won't have a lot of authority, though. At least Lucy needs someone she respects as a captain and a loli she will definitely not, even less so an alcoholic.

Some form of mutiny would be close to guaranteed.

An alcoholic loli sounds a lot more suited as someone who's in charge of finances in an ironic sort of way.

Name: Callum "Toolbox" Brady.
Age: 19.
Sex: Male.
Position: Mechanic.
Appearance: Callum stands at just under six feet when he gets a chance to stand fully upright, which, thanks to his job description is not very often. He is built lean, but also muscular, kept in shape from crawling around inside spaceships all day. Due to his occupation, he is almost always covered in oils and grime, and his hands have become tough and callous, scarred from years of tiny nicks and cuts.
Callum could be considered handsome, were it not for the layers of grime and sweat that cover his face most of the time. Long curly brown hair frames his head, often obscuring his eyes, which are a deep brown. His face is smooth with a small nose (he always says it's his best feature) and high cheekbones. His ears are fairly unremarkable and usually hidden behind curly hair. He noticeably only ever smiles with his mouth closed, because he thinks that he looks weird when he smiles with teeth. Despite his slim frame, he has wide shoulders.
Callum also has a bad burnmark on his upper left forehead, leaving the skin red and wrinkled, and leaving only a sliver of his left eyebrow. He's quite sensitive about the burn, and usually tries to hide it under his hair.
Due to necessity, Callum tends to wear a durable dark blue jumpsuit, faded once-brown boots, black gloves and special goggles with built-in high-power lights. He also wears a highly sophisticated (if cracked and battered) computer watch, with various cables and uplinks to held him interface with the ship he works on, as well as being able to display maps, make video-calls and even perform basic troubleshooting, while also telling the time, playing music, and streaming Callum's favourite T.V. shows. Of course Callum also carries a small backpack with all of the tools he could possibly need, and some extra just in case. Additionally, when the situation allows it, Callum wears a worn black leather jacket over the jumpsuit, because "It looks cool”.
Personality: Callum is a charismatic and fun guy when he gets going, however his lack of experience in some social situations means he sometimes has to be coaxed out of his shell. Very submissive, Callum is generally happy to follow other people's lead, though if he feels that something is wrong or whoever is in charge isn't pulling their weight, he won't hesitate to speak out. A pacifist, Callum will always try to find the peaceful solution, and finds himself caring about people a lot more than he should. When he gets angry, he can be blunt and vocal about his anger, but usually it is not long lasting and if he doesn't get over it immediately, he usually just simmers quietly to himself.

Doesn't drink, smoke or take any kind of narcotics.
It's also important to mention that Callum is an agrophobe: he’s afraid of open spaces, much more at home on his knees fixing ventilation systems and fiddling with wiring.
Biography: Callum was born in Ireland to a lawyer and his assistant- a mistake right from the beginning. His father had promised Callum’s mother that he would divorce so they could live together with their baby, but eventually got cold feet. It was too late for an abortion, and so little Callum was brought into the world. His mother was fired a few months later for “unpecified reasons”. Essentially, Callum’s dad couldn’t stand looking at the woman he’d betrayed. Although Callum’s mother tried to find another job, nobody really wanted to hire a single mom with little experience. They ended up on the “Dole”, welfare money from the government. They got a little extra from Callum’s father, but it was never enough. Living in crippling poverty broke his mother- Over the years she grew cold and unloving, and though she never beat Callum, she constantly verbally abused him.

“You’re worthless.”
“You ruined my life.”
“I wish you could just fucking die.”
You get the picture.
Callum actually did pretty well in school. He was a solid B student, and was almost top of his class in English and History. He had a few close friends in school, but the bullies outweighed the friends. When Callum was 15, he started helping out at a local ship mechanic to make some money, hopefully so he could attend college and leave his old life behind. He picked up on the work quickly, and found he was actually a pretty good mechanic.
Of course, it was only a matter of time until his mother found out about the job. She was outraged that Callum would “plot against her” and refuse to help pay the bills (which they both knew she often neglected to pay anyway). A few days later in a drunken stupor, Callum’s mother torched their house, deciding that she’d rather kill them both than have Callum succeed. Thankfully, Callum survived. His upper body had been badly burnt, and part of his upper forehead was badly scorched, and he would likely bear the burnmarks for the rest of his life.
Surprisingly, Callum was taken in by the mechanic he’d been working for. After a few more years working full-time with the mechanic, Callum decided to move to America, and get a job working at one of the space elevators. Over the next two years, Callum learned a lot about fixing spacecraft and found he not only worked better aboard ships, but he was also paid better. And so, Callum found himself aboard the MacAvity. Yay.

Optional captain's app for Lucy, if needed:

Name: Lucya Chekov, "Lucy"
Age: 29
Sex: Female
Position: Captain
Appearance:
Image

Personality: Lucy is a stubborn, hard-headed gal. She says what's on her mind and often the people around her respect her for it; and even though she might sometimes come across as rude or insensitive, she's got a soft side. Despite her sometimes rude-ish demeanour, she always has the well-being of her crew in mind, dutiful as she is, and is much kinder to them than most other people. Among strangers she may seem like a sassy bitch, but among her crewmembers and friends she's know to be more warm-hearted and join in on the conversation like any normal person would. Deep down she has a thirst for thrills and excitement, and there's a slight sadistic edge to her personality. She's very much a top.
Biography: As the name probably reveals, Lucya's born and raised a warm-blooded Russian. Her father had a management position with one of the Belt Coalition's many asteroid mining industries, while her mother was a teacher at a local university. Both her parents encouraged her to follow her dreams and did their best to ignite a thirst for knowledge, her mother in particular, but at the end of the day Lucya always found herself looking up at the sky and longing to explore every single radiant dot above.

They her parents didn't demand or expect her to, Lucya felt in some way obliged to pursue a higher education, knowing it would please her mother. After attempting a year of Aerospace Engineering, she eventually enlisted into an officer training programme, funded by an amalgamate of the Coalitions largest corporations to produce the next generation of military officers operating under the banner of the Belt Coalition. They provided her with a solid training and allowed her to enlist in a pilot training programme to complement her officer training. When she graduated, she did so among the top of her class, despite the rigorous workload, with a pilot certificate and as an officer recognised by the Belt Coalition's combined military forces. Though her future was laid out in front of her and wrapped with a nice bow, Lucy (politely) rejected the path that most of her fellow graduates took. Instead of walking the path to becoming the captain of her own military vessel, she resigned and sought to join a crew of her own. It was from that day onward she began to refer to herself as "Lucy".

Nobody told her it would be easy, but she didn't expect it to be. Finding a the right job turned out to be harder than it seemed, and Lucy was rather picky considering her circumstances. Fortunately for the crew of the MR-656 MacAvity, Lucy felt their ship seemed like a path to a new life. They hired her as a pilot, and the acting captain Markus Rhodes immediately saw the potential of his new helmsman.

Markus was an old military dog and immediately recognised Lucy's professional training, even if the other crewmembers didn't. To Lucy, he became a father figure that taught her how to actually captain a ship and lead a crew, and Markus saw Lucy as the daughter he had lost many years ago.

The MacAvity's crew wasn't particularly tight-knit. They were a bunch of people working together for mutual profit, and despite their captain's fantastic leadership, one rotten apple among the bunch made the entire group dynamic fall apart. Mutiny led to the death of Markus Rhodes and several other crewmembers, including the two mutineers. Those that survived couldn't shake the pain of losing their beloved leader and scattered to build a new life elsewhere, leaving Lucy the MacAvity. She spent a short while processing the entire ordeal she had gone through, but pulled herself up by her bootstraps (figuratively) and assembled a new crew to maintain the former captain's legacy.

Since the Macavity crew has presumably worked together for a while (In my mind, Ethan's been on the crew for two or three years, and has spent one or two of those years as First Mate) maybe we should set up our character's pre-existing dynamics and opinions of each other before the IC goes up.

Yes, this includes shipping.

Aye, should probably work on that once we've got our crew lineup filled up.

Well, once we have a captain I think we'll have more-or-less all the major roles filled.

Speaking of which, what are you leaning towards regarding Lucya's job?

How long ago did Markus Rhodes die? Ethan could be the only member (aside from Lucya, obviously) of the crew who both stayed loyal and decided to stay on the ship.

Hadn't thought too long about that. Not too long...maybe a year or so.

That depends on whether Ularn is okay with that, of course.

Actually it's one of the pilots offering to take over the captain position, which would make one of the pilot positions open. Aside from that, roles not listed in the OP seem to be fine if they're realistic (e.g., Kaidou applied as a cook, but is also pulling double duty as an enforcer because the MacAvity can't afford the luxury of a crewmember who just makes food) and enforcers of any kind are always fine, I think.

By the way, at some point Lucy needs to leave a gun somewhere which comes in handy at a much later point. (+10 points if you get the reference.)

Name: Danya "Daggers" Astadt
Appearance:
Image

Age: 35
Sex: Female
Position: Will captain for free. If not, will go away team for diplomacy/negotiation.
Personality:

Danya is a stubborn, surprisingly curmudgeonly bat. This can be attributed to her myriad of mental problems associated with her experience in war. She hides her past well in front of her crew, and she takes constant medication. She runs her ship with confidence, and hides any concerns that she has issues. Other problems came by in the form of a more than normal need for sexual attraction. It may constitute some sort of reprisal from loneliness or emptiness. Said symptoms, again, date back to her service.

Outside of mental concerns, Danya is a captain who leads with prestige. These are people from all walks of life aboard a rickety ol' ship. She almost describes her time in space as "therapeutic; far beyond any other." She is a kind and caring leader who works with each member of her ship individually, as long as they don't mess up. She prefers to be in the thick of it, which is how she came to be the negotiator; constant interference. Her last doc described it as "self-aggrandizement: a need for self-approval." It is no wonder that she has come to be quite diplomatic, though strong-handed. She keeps to herself, involves herself in others, has little care for the law, and is not afraid to use force. Daggers, in short.

Biography:

Danya Astadt started off as a brutish teen with little care for the world. The type to be easily fooled by the prospect of fighting for her country. The kind to work her life in the military, especially as earth entered an international conflict which left the planet thrust into its aging cycle. As the planet became worse and worse off, it was obvious war was brimming. She saw this as a way to fight for her nation, Switzerland. An unlikely nation to go to war, but, after a number of treaties, it was also brought into the fight.

The conflict raised on. She started off as a private, moved on to a squadron, to a captain at arms. She had that stubborn chevalier quality that led to moving up the ranks. She became a famed war hero in her time, only three years of service. Unfortunately, the war took its toll. After an incident she has never exposed to others, she was far from herself. Her compatriots were quick to notice. As time moved on, it became obvious that she was less and less likely to be able to maintain herself in battle. She was honorably discharged, and given a war medal. She was diagnosed with a variety of mental problems, ultimately culminating into, and from, PTSD.

Of course, this was not what she had in mind. Even best shrink could pinpoint what really went on in her mind. She knew she wouldn't stay on earth any longer. She booked a flight for the space fleet, though was rejected for obvious reasons. "unfit to fly." She was not going to stay on this rotting rock like her parents. She planned to travel the stars, not swallow in dirt-poverty. Afterwards, she found a private corporation willing to fund a flight. After forging her documents and hiding any dangerous records, she was drafted for a ship off the galaxy. The company was a shady one, which is probably how the fact she was unfit to fly never came to light. After working for a number of private companies, she came to acquire an odd ship known for its mining and combat capabilities.

She changed the dull name to something more likeable. It was labelled the MacAvity. She picked up bad habits, most notable being her promiscuity. Despite all of this, she can still be a surprisingly good captain. She picked her crew herself, and now works as an independent group working contract to contract. Few no of her true nature, as she works diligently to maintain her outbursts. Only a handful of people know about the medication she takes, and nobody but herself know why she takes it (PTSD). Her military skill, plus frightening tenacity, culminate in a fierce leader, and one who is specifically loyal to her crew.
