The Count seemed less than pleased with her response, but she continued. "We might literally set London ablaze, clear out the rabble and buy up the empty land, at least then there would be profit to be had. The Irregulars would be scattered to the four winds."
This argument did not seem to sway the Count's designs at all, so The Starling tried a different appeal. "Ask yourself, 'if Sherlock Holmes had not become aware of Professor Moriarty's existence, would the Professor have been bothered at all?' I doubt it. Until, you meet a nemesis that truly threatens to unravel your plans, you ought to be building your strength and creating your network of operatives."
"You cannot expect to command the loyalties of the Professor's organization by making decisions that offer no rewards to the rank and file. You might threaten to kill the ones that decide not to follow you, but their friends are not without their own connections."
The Starling believed that she saw the young Count earnestly considering her words. However, she had no idea if he would accept her arguments or reject them.
"... You make good points, Starlet..." Damian said quietly, looking out the window. Why didn't I think of that? This situation has obviously gotten me emotional... I need to take a step back.
Perhaps that party tonight will help with that. Good social interaction always kills me on the inside. And, I get to met my almost-certainly air-headed fiancée.
"First, we'll do some things for the rank and file. Pressure a few businesses, spread the trade of our illegal services, make more money... maybe press a few gangs into service. You wouldn't happen to know anything about rival gangs or any real threats to London, would you?" the Count von Anhalt asked, looking over at the beautiful woman in his carriage.

Very strange indeed.
Her next location was the ball, where she would simply sneak her way throw and voila! Home free!
Well, the hostess would be a problem. She likely wouldn't recognize Kaldwin, which would be a problem. But she would be wearing a mask, so hopefully it won't be much of a problem.

The Starling was quite happy that she had been able to reason with the Count von Anhalt. She knew that he had great potential, otherwise The Professor would likely have dismissed him. That alone however did not mean that he was Moriarty's legitimate successor. It helped her that she did not expect an experienced head on a young body.
The next questions were what was he willing to do for her help and how much of a genius was he?
"Why, my dear Count, I am very honored to be invited to attend your party this evening. Of course, I will be there, and I am certain that if I don't know those persons that you are inquiring about that some enterprising young courriers can help us," said The Starling, with a Mona Lisa smile... and then added the non sequitur, "Queen's Pawn to Queen's four."

Watson was not there. Charlotte had left him to get his own suit.
Speaking of Charlotte, she was in a bit of a tight squeeze at the moment... quite literally.
"Stop that!" she yelled, or she would have if she hadn't been currently squished into a corset that her ever-watchful mother insisted be tighter--and tighter--and tighter--
"No, no, still too big. Tighter."
"No, don't--" she started to protest, but the maid obliged her mother's orders and Charlotte's remaining air was forced from her lungs in a cry of pain.
"Stop complaining," her mother ordered.
"Stop me," she panted, "if I start sounding a little too old-fashioned... but forcing women to compact their innards in a tube isn't remotely elegant or attractive!"
"Charlotte, I will have no complaints from you. I need you to look no less than exquisite! I wouldn't normally ask this of you so politely, so the least you could do is be silent!"
"I'll try," Charlotte muttered, "but I think my kidneys are touching."
"What neckline do you think would be best suited for her, Miss Queens?" the maid asked respectfully.
"Something low-cut and flattering... no high necks."
"I'll see what I can do, mum... How about this dress? It's very elegant and mature."
"Oh, that is nice..."
"We could tie her hair up like this," the maid's hands swept Charlotte's dark hair up into a bun of sorts and fastened a rose clip in it before the girl could protest. Another maid, meanwhile, helped her into the dress. Made of dark red silk, the dress was hemmed with black lace on the collar and along the short, puffy sleeves. A black design covered the bodice and swept down half of the skirt, while black fingerless gloves, a lacy black necklace, and a black lace half-face mask completed the outfit. It was quite beautiful, and obviously quite expensive...
And Charlotte was not impressed by any of this.
"What makes this any more special than all the others? I'm getting agitated," she complained.
"You'll find out soon enough," her mother said, brushing at her lips with dark red.
Charlotte just brooded quietly.

Niko smiled as she kept his scarf, the exquisite yet worn piece of clothing standing out a little against the expensive and new dress. The young man then messed with the tie a little in the mirror, smiling, and grabbed his hat and overcoat.
He walked out of the closet, his suit fitting perfectly and showing off his thinner figure. "Well... How do I look? I bet I look like some old hat someone pulled out of a Buckingham closet..."

Game first or conversation, she wondered. Best not let him think that she was unprepared, game then. "Queen's Bishop's Pawn to Bishop's four."
Then to conversation, "But of course I know why there's a party. I hear that your fiancee' is a lovely young woman...."
"But do you see my name on theatre maquees in London, my dear Count? Being a member of a family of actors does not make one a 'star,'" she countered. "Ah, it is good to know that my first ally is well informed. Sadly, I cannot say the same about myself. No, James never did mention you or your name in any of his letters. To be truthful, he mentioned you once to me at Reichenbach, and that was only by your alias. Now, though... I do see the meaning behind it..."
The Count, after matching eyes with his companion for a while, looked back outside. It was raining.
"The weather here in London is so... Dreary and dismal. I do hope your women do not take after it."
I could learn to... Like, be entertained by, or possibly even love a fiery woman... But if she's dull and lame then the marriage won't last a week...

And I'm not thinking of a divorce.

Getting in to the party is an easy feat, but to blending within the party when you are just an upstart is hard, so hard that he missed his lovely jewelries in his house. So much, that, when he took a rest to the bathroom he saw what looked like to be one of the golden jewelries.
"Ooh, I want it." said Robert to himself.
