And I suppose that listening entirely to Yes Man isn't the greatest idea (since he suggested preventing Kimball's assassination), but I was never really given the information that without Kimball, the NCR wouldn't have been in the Mojave, and I assumed that his successor would simply press the same shit as he did.

If you played the Yes Man quests perfectly (that is, did the House quests until you complete IV, then betray him), House would tell you about Kimball's personal attachment towards winning the war (he has no popular mandate in California, so is trying to salvage his political career by 'crusading' into Vegas).

Kimball remaining alive isn't the end of the world (in fact, depending on your personal post-game headcanon, it can even be a good thing), and in fact makes remarkably little difference in the actual game prior to the ending, but there's certainly reason to believe that your life would be made a lot easier later on if he's dead.

Which I didn't, I betrayed him after II. So I suppose that's my bad, but further evidence that I should stop playing until I have more time to actually complete it.

The best ending to New Vegas would have been negotiating a peace between all three factions while playing "Why Can't We Be Friends" on a lute, and forever more be remembered as the "Bard of the Mojave."

I like to think the Courier succeeds Caesar when the latter eventually dies after a perfect Legion run.

Lanius is a solder, not a statesman.

Caesar was such an effective ruler not because he knows how to fight, but because he knows how to speak.

I'm not saying that Lanius would make a good leader, but that Lanius is Caesar's successor.

Lanius is extremely unpopular, I'm fairly certain the Courier could outmaneuver him politically, or at worst kill him and display his corpse as a trophy. I mean, the Courier is essentially a hero by that point, having done more to ensure a Legion victory than anyone else, on top of being a personal confidant and friend of Caesar himself, as well as being a political heavyweight and unmatched warrior. On top of all that, the Courier chose to join the Legion of their own free well, as opposed to being forced into it. In a slave society, I'd imagine that carries considerable weight.

My guess is that any power struggle would be short lived, with the Legion heavyweights largely flocking to the Courier's banner, and only a tiny sliver of Lanius' own men staying loyal to him. Worst case scenario is that he's either killed in personal combat or assassinated.

I'd go full savage, personally, if I was the courier and ended up as Caesar. I'd wear Lanius' face after I killed him as a reminder to potential usurpers. It'd be a bad scene.

Think post-apocalyptic Apocalypse Now up-the-river mentality.

Or complete Lonesome Road and nuke at least the Legion side, so you can get that sweet, sweet Armor of the 87th Tribe. I completed that DLC as early as possible just so I could do that.

My own personal canon is that my Courier offered Lanius a chance to submit peacefully, and the Legate didn't, he slew him in personal combat. Kind of an unfair fight, given that the courier cleared the quarry out of all its deathclaws bare handed, and slaughtered all the NCR troopers at Hoover Dam with nothing but his fists and a few throwing spears.

Yep. That's why the most "canonical" ending is most likely to go to Caesar, go through all of his dialog options, figure out that he's dying, and then slaughter him and all of his soldiers with brutal coldness.

IIRC, Yes Man said that House's projections showed that, with Kimball alive, blame for the fiasco at the Second Battle of Hoover Dam would fall on his shoulders, and that the political scandal (and probable subsequent impeachment, with all that entails) would keep the NCR busy at home and allow New Vegas to secure its grip on the Mojave.

Would've probably been even easier had Curie not charged him with her walking cane.

You should have owned up to your actions. Let her cold, lifeless body remind you of your weak, greed-driven failure every time you return home. Let its mere presence poison those who would have called you a friend against you. For this is what you deserved, what you earned.

But no, you couldn't take that reality. Know this, no amount of save scumming will ever take away the weakness that led to this most despicable act.
