State elections seen as a blow to Lindkwist, mixed result for SAP
SAP makes gains in Chamrland, nationalists surge in Makeland

5 October 2015

Astangjr — In a hotly contested election in Chamrland, Socialist Labour and other opposition parties made major gains and unseated the incumbent centre-right coalition, while in Makeland nationalist parties took home a majority of seats in the state legislature.

In Chamrland, the SAP nearly doubled their vote share and won 27 seats in the 63 seat State Diet, gaining 12 seats. The Green Left Party, which finished with four seats, and People's Party, which finished with three, also made gains, while all three parties represented in Lindkwist's federal coalition government lost seats. The Conservatives were particularly hard hit, winning just 14 seats – down nine. The Pirate Party also lost its sole seat in the legislature.

"This is our chance," SAP leader Sixden Je̊nssunr – who Chamrland Crown Commissioner Filip Ärestörn has asked to form a coalition government – told supporters and press. "We have a chance to make our state better and to demonstrate the promise of an inclusive, social, and democratic society."

The vote in Chamrland was particularly closely watched given the state's history of being a political trendsetter. With a similar to average demographic and economic makeup to the country as a whole, the largest party in the state diet elections in Chamrland has gone on to form the government in the federal diet in all but one election since 1953, making the win a not insignificant morale boost to the federal SAP and particularly pointed blow to Lindkwist's government, already facing declining approval numbers.

The SAP campaign focused heavily on economic issues, which have been a weak point for the Conservatives in the wake of the 2014 market crash – and will likely remain at the forefront as Commerce ministry figures now predict a "double-dip" recession following crises this summer in Borgosesia and Styria, which have shaken economic confidence across Alisna.

In particular, uncertainty over the future of Gäjger A/F's struggling automotive unit undoubtedly weighed on voters' minds; Gäjger Automobiles employed more than 3,400 in the state before suspending or laying off 380 workers at its plant near Kürfeld over the summer. Gäjger hopes to sell off the subsidiary, possibly to a Guurkhun or Van Luxemburger investor, but with the federal government ruling out state aid – beyond a Kr 525 million ($89.88 million), Kr 7,000 per car scrappage programme – the company has laid out plans to shut down its car and motorcycle plants by March 2018, with the loss of at least 5,000 jobs, if no suitable buyer can be found. Thousands more auto industry job losses could also occur in the state if component manufacturers are forced to downsize or go out of business.

Je̊nssunr was also critical of the federal government's nuclear roadmap, which listed two locations in Chamrland, at Hrisa and Sjoraburh, on the short list of sites for a fourth nuclear power plant, which would supply electricity to central Sondstead and help achieve a complete phase-out of highly polluting lignite coal plants.

In Makeland, nationalists gain a legislative majority for the first time

Although polling and analysis in Makeland indicated that the nationalist Erakond Mägimaa, and its leader, First Minister Riina Veskimägi, would easily retain its position as the largest party in the state legislature, the party surprised by gaining 10 seats, putting it at 45 seats in the 98-seat Assembly. Together with the more radical, Republican Popular Confederation-aligned Makeish Workers' Nationalist Party, which held steady at 5 seats, the two nationalist parties, which cooperate with each other, combined will hold 50 seats – a narrow, one-seat majority – in the state legislature.

While the EM has been the governing party since 2005, and been a major force in state politics for the past century, it has in the past governed either as a minority or in coalition with non-nationalist forces. Nationalists holding a majority has the potential to be a turning point in the Makeish movement, possibly even reigniting ethnolinguistic tensions which were largely resolved in the 1979 settlement.

In particular, the result raises the possibility of a referendum on independence being called – although Veskimägi, a moderate, opposes a referendum, having previously called the idea of an "in-or-out" vote "divisive". Public sentiment has been opposed to independence; while polling results vary somewhat, they typically have shown only between 15% and 30% support – although a 2011 poll showed 58% support for a referendum despite only 29% of respondents favouring independence.

The SAP, which hoped for a strong result in Makeland – part of its traditional geographic base of support – unexpectedly lost three seats to finish at 15. The other non-nationalist parties also saw losses almost across the board; the Green Left Party lost two seats and finished at 6, the Centre Liberals lost two and finished at 5, and the Christian Democratic Alliance lost one seat and finished at 3. Only the regional Almai Interest party, which held at 3 seats, did not see losses.

While the state Conservative & Unionist Party lost a seat, its finish at 16 seats was a small silver lining for both the Conservatives and federalists – the result was much less dramatic than in Chamrland and left the Conservatives, and their state leader Rain Olesk, unexpectedly taking over the role of official opposition from the SAP.

Elections were also held in Saint Eustace, with the pro-independence Antillean Freedom Party gaining one seat at the expense of the Conservatives – finishing with 3 seats on the 19 seat Council. Despite the decreased majority, the coalition between the Progressive Party – which remained at 9 seats – and the territorial Conservatives remained in government with 10 seats between them.

Closely watched ML trade resolution submitted
Proposal will give ML agency authority to set bank capital and liquidity, consumer product regs

11 January 2016

Luxembourg — The Maredoratic League Council delegations of four countries, lead by Morieux, today submitted a draft resolution to put into effect recommendations made by the MTO white paper released earlier this month.

The resolution, if adopted as released, will create a new League agency, tentatively the Organization for Economic Security and Co-operation, to establish binding, transnational standards for consumer products and regulations on bank capital adequacy and liquidity. It is sponsored by the delegations of Galla, Pollona, and Van Luxemburg in addition to Morieux. The draft also retains a controversial provision which mandates compliance by anyone doing business with or within the Maredoratic League, which according to policy expert Tödrikjr Ärtemssünr implicitly lays out that the OESC will be tasked with enforcing its regulations even on commerce such individuals, businesses, or governments conduct outside the ML.

"The wording is very broad," Ärtemssünr, a fellow at the Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute think tank, told SRR. "The international financial system needs to be restructured to prevent a worse collapse than 2014 in the future, and to do so it is vital that these safeguards be extended to Prekonate and Questers. The ideal obviously is for the major non-League states to sign on to an agreement."

In a short press release today, the Sondsteadish Permanent Mission to the Maredoratic League stated that "the majority of the terms of the draft resolution are agreeable, however we continue to have reservations with regard to the potential application of extraterritoriality in enforcement of the terms."

Karaman parties sit down to reconciliation summit
Cautious optimism as CPS, GHH meet in Ortaca

19 January 2016

Corum — The Morivaine-supported Committee for Public Safety of the National Republic of Karaman and the formerly Maredoratic League backed People's Provisional Government of Karaman are both optimistic that a long sought after deal to end the schism between the two governments and agree on a national constitution could be in reach, as representatives sit down at the CPS' Ortaca headquarters today.

The National Republic and the GHH, which is backed by the moderate Islamist Green Dawn Party (YSP), have been at an impasse for over two years, over several issues including foreign influence and religious politics, already failed to reach an agreement in abortive 2014 talks proposed by Birgjidä Eästernjeärd. According to sources close to the negotiations however, the changing political landscape in Karaman following the 2015 war and destruction of the Vyzant Republic has prompted a reevaluation of the issue, although it is still unclear if the biggest sticking point for the widely popular YSP – the NRK's prohibition on religious parties – is on the table. Religious parties have been barred from operating in the NRK since 2014, although the nominally secular conservative Party of Rights and Values is well known to have close ties to the YSP.

"We have not been given any definite assurances," GHH President Mustafa Serkan Askoy, whose flagging, liberal-nationalist United Front of the Appeal for Free People party officially formed a "new united front" with the YSP last year, told reporters outside the Corum Palms Hotel, under heavy guard by GHH police and MASTAMIK peacekeepers. "But Messieurs (Mehmet) Yazgan and (Jean-Pierre) Savreaux have made clear they are open to concessions and we must enter into negotiation with open minds." Both Askoy and YSP chairman İsmail Hikmet will be among GHH leaders attending the negotiations.

In a sign of the waning fortunes of the Islamic extremist movement in Karaman, a statement yesterday decrying the negotiations issued by renegade Grand Imam Hakan Yakup Barik, believed to now be in hiding in Soufia, received little attention in the local media.

After Jesselton, Morieux pivots to Alisnan democracies
Saint-Lô quick to reach out to Sondstead, other Alisnan states on issue of defence cooperation

19 January 2016

Windstrand — The morning after Monday's surprise announcement of the collapse of the six-year old Jesselton Pact alliance between Questers and Morieux, Morivaine officials were already pivoting to discuss deeper security ties with Sondstead, as well as Borgosesia, Galla, Pollona, and Varnia.

While rumors began to circulate as early as last spring that Morieux desired a closer relationship with Alisna's liberal democracies, seen to be more in line with Morivaine interests and values than Questers, particularly by the powerful Committee for the Security of Liberal Maredoratica, Morieux's foreign minister, Charles René Sauret, today confirmed that his ministry had requested "urgent meetings" with representatives of all five countries.

"The writing has been on the wall for the Jesselton Treaty Organisation since at least Sajur, if not the 2014 crisis," Mart Le̊fssunr, a defence analyst at the prestigious Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute, told SRR. "Morieux's quick response in engaging other Alisnan players likely indicates there was a concrete plan for this eventuality for some time. One thing to remember is that Jesselton was (former First Citizen François René) Tanguay's baby. It served Duclerc well initially but she had little love for it."

For many steadfastly independent Alisnan countries though, cooperation is likely to remain limited – well short of mutual defence or bases for Morivaine troops and aircraft. Both remain unpopular in Sondstead and would require amending or repealing the 1919 Foreign Alliances Act, the founding document of the country's 20th century neutrality. A poll conducted by the International Policy Opinions Centre and Tet Mörgen Post newspaper last November showed a record 36% support for a repeal or change, but 49% remained opposed with 15% undecided.

However, Sondstead will participate alongside Morieux in two military exercises this month; a dozen Sondsteadish observers are attending joint Morivaine/Karamish exercises which began yesterday near Ortaca, while Morivaine troops will participate alongside both Sondsteadish and Gallan forces in the two-week AURORA SKY operation, which begins next Monday in northern Sondstead – marking the first time Morivaine ground troops have visited Sondstead for an exercise.

At the same time it announced the dissolution of the Jesselton Pact, Questers also announced a mechanism to purchase goods from Jumieges, Rochehaut, Styria, and Varnia using the Pound Sterling. Resource industry stocks in Windstrand dropped in response to concerns the agreement designated those four countries as preferred suppliers.

Guurdalai/Rochehaut summit starts in Windstrand
Palace hosts negotiations over acrimonious submarine dispute

20 February 2016

Windstrand — Envoys from Guurdalai and Rochehaut sat down today at Windstrand Palace for the first round of talks aimed at reaching a compromise on the protracted dispute over the Rochehautese submarine Adrienne, which ran aground in Guurkhun territorial waters late last month.

The submarine's 32 crew, who Guurkhun military officials have accused of spying on an under construction naval installation, remain held at Rinchinbal Naval Base. Rochehaut has continually denied the allegations of spying and maintain that the submarine strayed into Guurkhun waters during a routine exercise before striking a seamount. A Maredoratic Organisation for Human Rights, Refugees and Development delegation visited the base last week and confirmed that the sailors are being held under "adequate and humane" conditions.

"We absolutely expect to see constructive engagement, although a final settlement may not be reached by Wednesday," Foreign Minister Märjä Älekssünr-Meärt, who will observe and mediate the talks, told press this afternoon at the Hall of State. "We aren't going to see this escalate. I firmly believe both parties want to come to an equitable agreement."

In response to a press question, Älekssünr-Meärt also stated that she hoped both sides were interested in "coming out" about the facts of the incident.

"In the best case scenario, both parties will be forthcoming with what they know. There is an issue of not just establishing the facts but rebuilding trust," she added. When asked if she was commenting on the allegations of Rochehautese spying, Älekssünr-Meärt stated "I'm not going to talk about unverified statements, not unless they become verified", and reiterated that an equitable agreement is needed.

"The Rochehautese government is united in its determination to support all necessary measures in support of the stability of Southeast Wilassia," a source familiar with the matter who wished to remain unnamed said. "Liése is looking forward to settling this matter as quickly as possible so that the sailors can return to their families."

According to the Foreign Ministry the five-day summit will conclude on Wednesday, whether or not a final agreement can be reached.

Prime Minister confirms bid for third term in 2017
Lindkwist: "We can no longer take the liberal international order for granted"

2 September 2016

Image
Kristinä Lindkwist addresses the DuKaBurh Constituency
Conservative Convention to announce her bid for a third term.

Windstrand — Confirming perennial speculation, Prime Minister Kristinä Lindkwist announced she will seek to lead her coalition to a third term in government next year.

"I feel strongly it would be remiss for me to step down at this critical juncture," Lindkwist said, speaking at a constituency Conservative convention in Kanalholme̊n. "All around Alisna and the world there are those seeking to exploit fear, uncertainty, and and hardship through populism and demagoguery. The message we read from them is becoming more and more clear every day; we can no longer take the liberal international order for granted."

While in recent months a number of Conservatives have publicly flirted with seeking the party leadership, including key Lindkwist allies Mihäel Karlssunr and Issa Yonan and backbencher Elin Timmermän, seen as a more right-wing candidate, Lindkwist is highly unlikely to face a leadership challenge. Timmermän was quick to release a statement ruling out running against Lindkwist, reading in part "There is a healthy marketplace of ideas within the Conservative Party. That said, I have great respect and confidence in the Prime Minister and will be proud to support her."

Lindkwist's announcement comes at an increasingly turbulent time internationally, and as increasingly negative attention has been paid in the press to her chief rival, SAP leader Antonia Sjole̊r, for her soft stance on, and alleged closeness with Questers. Sjole̊r was recently criticized by Conservatives for suggesting she would meet with representatives of the Styrian People's Homeland Party, while a poll released by the Mäximiliän Hanssunr Institut showed that for the first time since her election as leader in 2014, a majority viewed her unfavorably, with 51% unfavorable and 44% favorable. The same poll showed Lindkwist's ratings have recovered dramatically from a an all-time low last summer, with 53% viewing her favorably and only 43% viewing her unfavorably. In July 2015, an MHI poll showed 49% viewed Lindkwist unfavorably and just 45% viewed her favorably.

In her address, Lindkwist also hinted at her government's foreign policy priorities going forward, referencing military exercises with Galla and Morieux in January and emphasizing the need to cooperate with "like minded democracies" to preserve continental peace and stability and Sondsteadish security.

Government weighing Karaman timeline, expected to favour partial 2017 withdrawal
Sjole̊r proposes all combat troops home by year end; Government plan could keep reduced force through 2019

14 January 2017

Asteriopol — The government is currently examining timetables for withdrawing Sondsteadish troops from their mission in Karaman, now in its fourth year, Foreign Minister Märjä Älekssünr-Meärt stated in a press release issued today. However, with the government said to be considering extending the mission's mandate, its plan could set up an election year clash with the opposition.

Under the current mandate, a withdrawal must begin by March 2018 to allow all Sondsteadish forces to exit Karaman by 31 July 2018, the date the current three-year reauthorization ends. But Älekssünr-Meärt has previously suggested the government would be open to another reauthorization which could keep some troops in Karaman until the end of 2019, while the SAP leadership has ramped up pressure for an expedited withdrawal; in her first speech of the new year, Antonia Sjole̊r stated her goal was to "bring the troops home by Christmas". Further political complications depend on the results of Karaman's first general election since the adoption of a constitutional compromise last year, scheduled to be held on 16 April 2017.

Public opinion, which had remained largely supportive of the deployment, is a political obstacle as well, following the resolution of the dispute between the National Republic of Karaman and the moderate Islamist opposition and the end of the large-scale insurgency. In a December IPOC/TMP poll, 46% of respondents opposed a continued Sondsteadish presence compared to 43% in support, while 62% opposed sending more troops to Karaman if requested by Morieux or other Sondsteadish partners to just 29% in support.

"The Lindkwist government is still committed (to Karaman)," said Mihäel Cederkwist, a Karaman analyst at the Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute, a well respected foreign policy think tank. "The general sense is that the country could destabilize again and that an expedited withdrawal of the (Maredoratic) League mission would be a mistake. But the issue now is the politics."

How the Sondsteadish mission has evolved over time

Sondstead initially approved a contribution to the Maredoratic Stabilisation Mission in Karaman (MASTAMIK) in August 2013, authorizing the deployment of up to 1,000 troops and aid workers for two years, with an initial deployment of 400 soldiers and 200 civilians. From September 2014, the force swelled after the Federal Diet authorized an increase to up to 2,500 personnel and the deployment of a full cavalry battalion, with the Sondsteadish contingent peaking at 2,000 military and civilian personnel in Spring 2015, and in February 2015, the deployment was reauthorized for three more years.

With the withdrawal in Spring 2016 of the cavalry battalion from Silvan, the Sondsteadish Peace Force Karaman (SFRIMKA) currently stands at 1,050 personnel, including 900 combat troops based in Corum and Silvan. Some 4,000 Sondsteadish soldiers have served in Karaman in the three and a half years since operations started. 26 have lost their lives, most in the first year and a half of the war, and 168 have been wounded.

Lindkwist, Veskimägi reach agreement on Makeish referendum
Landmark memorandum provides for Makeish vote on independence from Sondstead

2 March 2017

Image
Lindkwist speaks at Windstrand Palace after signing a memo-
-randum laying out a 2018 vote on Makeish independence.

Windstrand — In a landmark summit at Windstrand Palace today, Prime Minister Kristinä Lindkwist and Makeish First Minister Riina Veskimägi signed a memorandum promising to hold a binding referendum in Makeland next year, asking voters if they favor secession from the federal union.

Under the memorandum, a referendum will be held sometime in April or later next year, with the exact date to be set in legislation to be made by the National Assembly of Makeland, leading to independence no sooner than eighteen months after the referendum date in the event of a yes vote. To be valid independence must be supported by an absolute majority of registered voters.

The agreement comes after over a year of sometimes acrimonious political wrangling over the referendum question, both in Asteriopol and in Makeland, in the wake of nationalist parties gaining a majority in the state parliament for the first time in history in 2015's general election. The clamor has put the moderate Veskimägi, a one-time opponent of an independence referendum, awkwardly between her own nationalist base and pro-unionist sentiment from many others in Makeland as well as in the Federal Diet.

"This is a decision reached after intense and careful deliberation on the best path forward for the Makeish people," Lindkwist told reporters in a post-signing press conference. "Makeland will have a unique opportunity to decide its future. My belief is that future is as a member of our union, which is so much the better for having Makeland as one of its constituents. And Makeland is so much the better for being so. I wish to emphasize this".

In contrast to Lindkwist's full-throated support for unionism, Veskimägi has thus far pointedly refrained from endorsing either a yes or no vote on independence, prompting some to accuse her of dodging the issue; Makeish state Conservative leader Rain Olesk commented in an interview last week on with AUF's Sünderin mit Cris Granholm that "the Makeish people deserve to know if their premier even supports her own referendum".

In a brief statement to the press before leaving for her flight to Kifmay, Veskimägi did not go further than saying "I'm exceedingly proud to have secured with the Prime Minister a commitment to Makeland's right of self determination. Over the coming months we are going to work out a comprehensive plan to present to voters on how independence would work".

Legislation must now be approved by the Makeish National Assembly and, under Article 21, the Federal Diet for the referendum to take place. Both Lindkwist and Veskimägi committed to begin work on such legislation next week, with no major challenges expected in passing the bills, given the nationalist majority in Makeland and the fact that both the government and Socialist Labour leadership in the Federal Diet have stated they will support it. However, there were suggestions on Wednesday that some Conservative MAs could rebel and vote against a referendum bill.
