Should Marijuana be Legalized?

Postby San Lumen » Sun Dec 27, 2015 1:46 pm

In my opinion Marijuana should be legal. There isn't any reason for to be illegal. Its never killed anyone, studies have shown its not a gateway drug, and its nearly impossible to overdose. To many people have gotten criminal records and gone to jail and unable to get work over a smoking a plant. Plus this plant can also help people who have anxiety and medical problems and doesn't have the harmful chemicals and addictiveness of nicotine. I know people who smoke marijuana and they have never done any other illegal drug.

In the US marijuana is completely legal in Alaska, Colorado, Washington state, Washington D.C, and Oregon. In those states legalizing it has helped the economy greatly. Nevada will likely join the ranks next November. Plus everyone knows its legal in Netherlands too. Others have legalized it for medical purposes. What do you all think?

But if it was legal, then it wouldn't be cool! :(

For anyone wondering, I joined this website during my edgy teenage years. I made a lot of dumb, awkward posts, flip-flopped between various extreme ideologies, and just generally embarrassed myself. I denounce a sizable amount of my past posts. I am no longer active on NationStates and this nation/account is no longer used.

I would go so far as to say it should be promoted. In areas where it has been legalized its helped the economy. just look at Colorado.

Legalizing it and then taxing the living daylights out of it is probably a more effective way of discouraging it than a halfhearted, semi-enforced ban.

I believe we had a significant surplus from the tax on marijuana that was put into education, though I could be wrong. Gimmie a minute and I'll hunt it down.

Concerns about coolness aside, briefly, I suppose we probably should legalise marijuana.

If you tax it heavily people will carry on buying it illegally.

Trouble is, once you legalise it where does it end ? if you kill or rape someone under the influence, what happens then?
who would be authorised to sell it? Doctors? Chemists? corner shops?

We have spent decade upon decade trying to get rid of potentially dangerous drugs and if one just gets legalised you are beginning to essentially give in.

Look at Colorado and you have your answer. If someone was stoned and raped or killed someone they would still be charged with a crime. It's do for alcohol i don' think marijuana would be any different

It already is legal where I live, and surprise surprise the world didn't end. So yes, legalize it.

Probably the same thing that happens if you kill or rape someone while you're drunk. That is to say, you still get your ass locked up for a long time.

You dont know government very well.
Oh sure, they wont care about the odd plant or three, but at some point cultivation will be liscensed, and regulatory policed while landowners growing in commercial scale will be bled from raised property tax. Give it a few years, and you will have a lobby and litigation culture getting started that will make Big Tobacco look like a mild fart in a heavy wind.

I really have no idea who it would hurt if it was.

It's one of those things that would maybe help a little if it was legalized, it would take away a source of income for the cartels. Although I don't now just how much it would effect the cartels. And it would save money the Government spends on "combating" it's influence and sales.

But it wouldn't change much. So yeah. I think it should be legalized because, to me at least, keeping it illegal seems needlessly expensive.
