Kryopulia

The general nodded at the words of the Prevanian captain, “Very well. We’ll make due with what we have and rely on the air force to clear up any remaining sites. If your airship is up for another trip, there’s equipment we left behind to ease up the load, it would be quite productive to have it available once the element of surprise is gone. By the time it gets back, we should have the region pacified and secure for its landing.”

Once the conversation with the Prevanian ended, the general turned towards one of his waiting men and delivered a short set of instructions. “Contact the fleet and inform them on the current situation, ask them to be on their toes, just in case we miss any major installations. Also, tell them to prepare our gear for an outing, they’ll have to be ready once the airship’s there.” After he gave the orders, the general looked at his departing troops.

The Atrean troops in the compound made a speedy exit. There was a minor incident with the detachment responsible for the AA installation protecting the Aerohaven, but the RRF troops were relatively easily subdued and he could already see a few soldiers transporting the prisoners inside. Arrangements would have to be made for the prisoners, he thought as he looked at them, but that would come later. For now, a hall would serve as an impromptu detention facility.

“Make sure those prisoners are treated with respect.” “Yes sir.” “Remember, we’re here as guests, those are their own people.” “Yes sir, the troops have already been instructed as to the issue.” “Good. Now, find me a place for a staff room.” “Ah! One more thing, send a platoon to guard the Elektor, the Empress would be most displeased if anything were to happen to him.”

The majority of the objectives on the 33rd’s list were in a ten mile radius around the Guild Aerohaven. Logistical limitations and numbers made covering a larger area problematic, and this was enough for this stage of the operation. The men moved like shadows in the night, only the slightest of noises betraying their presence . Engagement with the enemy was avoided until the very last moment, except for a few wayward patrols, quickly silenced. And then; pandemonium.

At precisely three hours after the departure orders from the Aerohaven, the Atrean forces made their presence known. “Hey, you there mate? Stop joking around, it’s not funny!” For that Prevanian soldier, the last thing he saw before a knife’s blade etched into his skull were the night goggles on the face of an Atrean trooper. It went much the same across the entire area, and soon the sound and flashes of gunfire filled the night. With one notable exception.

The troops guarding the Lafayette ABM defence battery were a cut above the rest. Elektor Aristeides’s men had already warned the Atreans about the fact, and the Azar came prepared for the encounter. Compared to the other troops encountered so far, the SRF soldiers were more alert, more prepared, even though they clearly didn’t expect any serious troubles.

It all started in a second. A gun flashed. A soldier fell. Alarm was raised. The Azar charged. Guns spoke. People died. Grenades flew. Explosions made all quiet. The location favoured the defenders, the Azar had little knowledge of the land, and no time to remedy the issue. It was a fast, furious fight and in the end, numerical superiority, the surprise element and a handful of grenades decided the match. The Prevanian installation was under control.

Back in the Aerohaven, in his ad hoc established staff room, the general was receiving reports. “All goes well sir. We’ve managed to subdue the local resistance with light casualties. There’s only some minor trouble left.” He quickly checked a report thrust into his hand and spoke again. “And apparently we’ve managed to take over the Lafayette battery with acceptable casualties.”

The general reflected on the information he received for a brief moment before lifting himself from his seat. “Good. Get the rest of the division on the ground, and inform the Navy it can start earning its keep. We’ve cleared the way, they need to get here fast.”

West of The Sea of Harmony

General von Lichtenlade’s message was waited with trepidation in the fleet. Soon the helicopters would enter the point of no return. If Lichtendlade didn’t do his job, then the situation could turn nasty indeed. “Sir! A report from the 33rd. General von Lichtenlade reports all objectives have been attained, stage two of the operation is a go!” The admiral acknowledged the communication officer with a single nod. His eyes narrowed, this was the moment he’d been waiting for. He moistened his lips before speaking a single word. “Go!”

The first to take off were the ‘stealth planes’. They would keep quiet until their time came. The second group was composed of the ‘wild weasels’, they would draw out the enemy SAM fire and either point out the location, or take them out themselves. The third group would have the easiest mission of them all; pound the enemy into the ground and distribute leaflets all across the area appealing to the Prevanian people to fight against Arkadios.

In addition, to complete the entourage for the 33rd, a number of submarines, closely positioned to the Prevanian shores, just slightly outside the mined area started launching missiles at installations deemed dangerous for the landing. This effort was soon joined by the fleet, which started lobbying missiles at the Prevanians.

For the soldiers onboard the helicopters, the first sign as to what was happening came in the shape of streaking missiles. “Look at them go!” “ It’s started, the General got us through.” “Goes to show that the old bastard isn’t all talk.” “Wait for us General.” “Can’t have them grab all the fun.” “They’ll turn them to smithereens.” “Let’s hope they won’t take out all of them!”

The second sign arrived in the form of giant birds of steel, attack planes rushing towards Prevanian shores. “It’s the fly boys. Cheeky little bastards.” “Well, better with them than without them.” “True enough. Don’t think I’d care to fight in a war where the only thing I see on the sky are enemy fighters gunning for my head.” “”Don’t remind me. If I don’t have to see another missile heading my way, I’ll be happy with the shells and bullets.” “They can still kill you.” “Yah, but at least there’d be pieces of me left to be buried.”

Finally, the last sign, the one confirming came with a new escort; UAVs. “They’re here. Confirm their arrival.” “Roger that.” “Never liked the concept of a vehicle that can kill without a man in the cockpit.” “Makes us pilots irrelevant.” “Maybe, but for now they’re going to be a mite useful. No point in losing perfectly good helicopters when we have these drones to soak up the fire.” “Quite, quite so.”

Farther ahead, the Prevanians were finally catching up with what was happening. Long range defences engaged, large SAM missile screeching in the sky to intercept the Atrean planes. Rapier 2000 batteries started firing at the cruise missiles sent their way by the Atrean ships and an assortment of other SAM batteries soon joined the light show. But something was missing.

In the midst of the Prevanian defences, right in the path of the enemy helicopter armada, a gap presented itself, no batteries firing upon the attackers. Only at the last moment did the Prevanians realized what had just happened, and by then, it was already too late.

Kryopulia

At the end of night, as the sun was rising , General von Lichtenlade was reunited with the rest of his division. “They’re all here sir. We’ve suffered some light casualties when two choppers went down due to AA fire from the port, but otherwise we’re in one piece. We’ve also lost some fighters, but I already have men on that. Obviously there’s some frustration about the lost helicopters, but morale’s good, and soaring.” “Good, we’ll stick to the plan then. There’s no time to waste.”

The general’s boots were dirty, and his eyes were red. The movements he made were rather sluggish and his yawns were a clue enough that the man was in desperate need of some shut eye, yet he ignored such suggestions. He had no time. “Get the units organized and prepare to move against the port. We have to take it before the others arrive. I’m not going to allow a threat to our air bridge stand.” “Yes sir.” “Make sure the air force roots out any remaining SAM sites. If they delay, by the time the others are here it’ll be too late.” “Yes sir.”

The 33rd was acting without offering the local defenders any respite. The new arrivals replaced the soldiers that led the initial assault, continuing to enlarge the “safe zone”. At the same time, roughly six thousand men converged on the port. The chaos of the night before was obvious, as chimneys of smoke were rising from the smouldering wreckages of several AA sites.

There was a reason for this haste. Over the horizon, up in the clouds, a massive aero fleet was coming, a thousand heavy transport planes, filled to the brim with four Atrean divisions. On the seas, three army corps were waiting for the capture of the port, and back home, another transport fleet was taking off. And for the next week, Atrean troops would flow into the country like a river released from its dams.

The Empire had come.

Prevanian Army Supreme Headquarters, Prevoygrad

Arkadios rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he unsteadily stood up. "Yes, come in." he called, weakly. An officer (he still couldn't understand all their rank insignia) came in and placed a print out on the desk before departing. Arkadios stretched for a moment before ambling over in his slippers to read it.

TO: Mr Arkadios

You are most misinformed. Your attack against the Pfifenhaven area, on the contrary to your arguements, would be categorised both as a war crime and a crime against humanity, under the agreements that you quoted:
- The attack was designed to kill via the secondary production of fallout - noxious substances which are defined as poisons. As such, this contradicts the Hague convention, and various other conventions since on the use of poisons in warfare.
- The attack was indiscriminate, the utilised weaponry killing both military and civilian personnel in the target area. As well as targeting medical services on the island (which is prohibited by the Geneva Conventions), the weapons were used to attack the civilian population - the sheer power of the devices used is testament to this decision. This is again prohibited by the Geneva conventions on the Protection of Non-combatants.
- You say yourself that you were "cutting out the rot", by destroying a rebel movement. The targeting of civilian populations in the area via the spreading of fallout and the use of such wide-area weapons, for their political beliefs in supporting the rebel movement, would be classed as Politicide, which is a Crime Against Humanity.

As to the threat against the People's Nation. As the strike took place, we had already informed your faction well in advance of the presence of the FUPF team in the area. The attempt to catch them in the blast, so to speak, had they arrived mere minutes earlier, would have possibly destroyed the escorts and transport crew to the island (all Fegosian natives), and killed the FUPF investigative team. The timing of this nuclear strike may be claimed as misfortunate - however, you yourself knew many a time our stressing that attacking the FUPF team would be taken as an act of war by the FU. As such, using nuclear weapons to try and kill Fegosian natives, destroy Fegosian equipment and kill or severely harm Fegosian Union interests fully justifies our use of such weapons even now.

This leads us on to your plea of your innocence. Whilst we may treat you as innocent for the meantime, as the law permits, our patience is stretched. You have failed to provide the medical reports or records that prove that Boris Berenovkski is or was in such a state. You have similarly failed to accept a request for a multi-national investigation by FUPF operatives to investigate your claims (which would have been found to be correct, were you innocent as you plea) and attempted to kill FUPF operatives who were moving to the other faction. We furthermore question your motives to using nuclear weaponry, as under standard operating procedure the use of such weapons would only be used in retaliation. From data received by multiple nations, we have found that it was you who commited to the first strike - Katanozagi satellites picked up radiation spread by a possible radiological weapon in advance of the main missile exchange, and RADSAT and similar satellites have found that no nuclear weapons were detonated in Prevoygrad by gamma flash detection, and that no radiation traces have been detected in the vicinity. As such, we are forced to assume that, in the absence of you offering yourself to the FUCC for trial or allowing any sort of valid investigation, that your position was obtained wrongfully.

You have not helped your case in many aspects. Unless you can prove your innocence and rightful case, the FUPF and Fegosian authorities will continue to maintain your arrest warrant, and the People's Nation will remain in a state of war.

Oh dear, this was not good. His visions of a happy retirement in a large house on the Prephanian waterfront were evaporating before his eyes. He cursed himself as a food for having been taken in by the former Chairman of KMKI. He sent an email to the Army's legal team, asking them to have a look over the Alfegan message. They would be sure to find something interesting.

To: The People's Nation of Alfegos
From: Direktor Arkadios of the Thalassocratic Oligarchy of Prevania
Encryption: [OPEN LETTER]

Dear Sirs and Madams,

You also appear to be misinformed. There are and were no civilians in Pfiffenhaven, merely military personnel and various contractors. Medical services were not specifically targeted, it was everything on the island that was targeted. Undoubtedly, there were some first aid posts at some of the installations you attacked. Does their destruction count as a war crime? I think not.

Furthermore, the attack was not designed to kill via the fall out. If that was my intention, I would have used either radiological weapons or fewer nuclear weapons. As it was, enough nuclear weaponry was employed to ensure that all personnel on the island were killed by the primary heat and blast effects of the weapons employed.

As for your third point, I repeat again that there were no civilians in the vicinity. Our scientists are monitoring the cloud of fall out and we have systems in place to ensure that any civilians in fall out afflicted areas are evacuated.

The timing of the strike was utterly non-intentional. It was the rebels who attacked first with an ICBM of their own. We had no way of knowing that it was non-CBRNE, so we responded as if it was. May I suggest that the rebels were to blame for launching an ICBM so close to your team's arrival. Our first strike was entirely conventional, and I find any claim of radiation afterwards rather dubious.

Yours sincerely,

Direktor Arkadios of the Thalassocratic Oligarchy of Prevania

As soon as the drones entered SAM range, they were fired at by the long-range installations. The Alfegan drones drew out their fire, with many tens of SAMs fired at the apparent swarm of various aircraft. However, by the time the drones entered Rapier and Starstreak II range, it had become obvious that they were merely decoys, which were soon shot down by the optically-guided Rapiers, which then relocated, when it became obvious that more attacks were not immanent.

Pfiffenhaven

Archimedes peered up groggily at his rescuers. "Don't worry - just take it easy, and you'll be out of here in no time. We're going to use the vehicle winch to lift the bits off of you, and then we'll take you up to be decontaminated. Now, this is very important - do you know if there are any other survivors, and do you know where Direktor Berenovski was when the bunker collapsed?" one of the men in complete CBRNE gear asked. He coughed up another wad of foamy blood, "No, I think I am the only one." The effort of speaking was so very tiring, and he paused before continuing, half remembering old security protocols, "I am not allowed to tell you. Who are you?"

Kryopulia

Elektor Aristeides sat very still, not daring to move. He stared straight ahead at the wall, waiting for them to finish with him, "Oh, come on, I don't need this much make-up, do I?" he asked, appealing to the cameraman. "Trust me, Demosthenes, you'll need all the make-up you can get - the CGI wizards can only do so much."

A few minutes later, the make-up artist finished with his handiwork. Demosthenes walked over to the studio, feeling odd with the thick layers of make-up. "My goodness, when I'm Direktor, I'll have to make my announcements by radio - there's no way I'm going through this every time I want to speak to the Prevanian people."

He sat down in the plush (but not too much so) leather chair as various persons fussed around, making last-minute alterations. Finally, they were ready. Handing his script to an assistant, he glanced at the auto-cue. The director held up three fingers. Then he dropped one, then another, then the final one. A green light appeared on the camera. He gulped before starting his broadcast,

"My dear fellow Prevanians, I have come to you today to speak about a most grave matter. It concerns all of us equally. As you may or may not have been made aware by the government, yesterday, shortly after noon, a large number of nuclear weapons were fired at Pfiffenhaven by the government. It is believed that all on the island perished.

As you have no doubt been made aware, the Boule chose in a democratic vote to sack Mr Berenovski and to elect Mr Arkadios. This is not the case. There was indeed an election, and it did follow all the rules and regulations. However, my fellow Prevanians, it represented a gross violation of democracy. Bribery was the order of the day; why, I myself was offered 20 million Prevaks if I would vote for Mr Arkadios!

Now, this cannot be right that the Direktor can be elected through the use of bribes and you, the people they represent, can do nothing. This is grossly unjust.

You may also have heard that Mr Berenovski was suffering from insanity. This is a lie! I spoke to him via a satellite link only two days ago and he was perfectly sound. No, it was not the Combined Fleets who revolted, it was 'Direktor' Arkadios and the Army!

Thus, Prevanians, you face a choice unprecedented in our history. Whether to continue with Arkadios, who has demonstrated himself as a man without morals or principles, a man with far too cosy relations with business and, above all, a man who has utter contempt for you.

Or, you can make the decision to stand up for the Prevania we all know and love. Support me, and I will restore democracy to Prevania. Support me, and I will ensure that my Atrean allies provide aid to those afflicted by the fall out and help restore stability. Support me, and I promise to you that I will promote a more responsible government, one that protects the interests of the people as well as those of industry. Support me, and I will work for you with all my strength."

He slumped back in his chair. The cameraman stopped filming and a bustle of activity resumed. The director came up, "That was good. However, we'd just like you to repeat it once more, before we send it of to CGI so it can be broadcast." Demosthenes sipped from a glass of water. Despondently, he acquiesced.

Several hours later, a group of armed men broke into a Prevanian Broadcasting Corporation broadcasting centre, locking the staff in a store cupboard before broadcasting Elektor Aristeides' message across all Prevanian radio and television channels. All across Prevania, people stopped what they were doing to listen and watch the broadcast. Halfway through, a section of MIS troops attempted to recapture to centre, but were stopped by a growing crowd of armed citizenry.

All over Prevania, Elektor Aristeides' message was ringing home. In future, the Atreans would face even less resistance, as many LDF units simply demobilising before their arrival.

Meanwhile, at the Guild aerohaven, a mighty fleet was assembling. Elektor Aristeides called in every debt he was owed, bringing in tens of aerocargoships and aeroliners from Prevanian aeroshipping companies. They were all moored at the aerohaven, waiting for the signal to cast off for the transportation of the Atrean troops.

St. Istvan, HCSK
Strategic Command Center, deep beneath the War Department

The SATCOM Operations Center at Száraz AFB took over one of the "push" monitors to the side and below the main screens. The caption marked "Kryopulia, Prevania", and the footage showed a sudden flare in ground violence at a Lafayette ABM battery. General Lajos sent a message back through the system. "Run that back, that attack had to come from somewhere. Watch the area closely, I'm certain something is up."

General Miklós picked up the secure line and dialed his deputy commander back at ISOC HQ. "SATCOM's got something going near Kryopulia - make sure the shop over there at Száraz butts in on it accordingly."

They watched Air Flotiila: Molten Lead and air elements from Taskforce: Righteousness began their efforts to erode the Prevanian Army's coastal air defenses. The initial stages were always an intensive and laborious time for both sides, as the battle could be pitched either way by whoever could gain the most momentum. The Operations Center was going to be really busy for the next while, marking and making notes about everything they could find on the enemy at that location. Unless some sort of major diplomatic or military breakthrough happened, other fronts would eventually have to be opened too.

Meanwhile, in tandem with the searches from surface, air, and space for more nuclear KMKI threats, SATCOM moved six of the newly improved Carrion satellites into place over into the sky over Prevania. In addition to more efficient power consumption, control, and recharge over the original service model, it fielded a rotary launcher of modified Finch missiles for improved self-defense, angled paneling to reduce radar cross-section, and matte black finish. The original service model was intended as a domestic utility ASAT to destroy classified components before causing the target to de-orbit, but operating in teams of three still managed at achieve a 9-to-1 kill ratio against Blackhelm Coalition resources. The newest ones were projected for even more destructive power as a combat ASAT resource. But that wasn't the primary mission here in the skies over Prevania. The Carrion sats had the additional capability to use their primary microwave weapon to shoot down ballistic missiles at the top of their trajectory, burning them out before MIRVs could even separate. Cleaning up the "dirty" mess wherever the debris came down, that wouldn't be nearly as bad as cleaning up after multiple nuclear detonations.

Prevanian Territorial Waters
West of Prevania

CSG-1 moved into position as dusk set in, linking up with PCF Taskforce: Ricardo and the Fegosian taskforce and air flotilla. The other HCSK Navy CSGs would be in theater by midnight, and the Krommindy Royal Navy would be along tomorrow evening. One of the GA-101 reconnaissance elements was sent to observe the battle between the air flotilla and the coastal defenders on the ground, but to try and avoid engagement if at all possible.

The one major issue with the highly advanced and sensitive sensor equipment onboard HCSK EW aircraft was that the sheer amount of data being collected couldn't all be transmitted in real-time. There was just too much of it! All the standard information was still being sent in real-time to BMS, but the majority of it would be uploaded in compressed packages and sent to be unpacked and reconstructed and analyzed by signals intelligence experts. It was for that reason that a flight of only three aircraft could do exponentially more collective damage later by not engaging.

However, back on the flight deck of the CSS Király, VFI-1 sat in their LY-908 interceptors, fueled, armed, and primed for action. Morale was high, and so was the adrenaline. A flock of grey warbirds with thin brown and blue tiger stripes, upside-down horse shoes painted on the tails, wings extended, ready to let their inner infernos out.

On board the CSS Biztonsági, Commander Mihály tuned in to Elektor Aristeides' address to the peoples of Prevania, and started recording it for intelligence purposes.
"My dear fellow Prevanians, I have come to you today to speak about a most grave matter. It concerns all of us equally. As you may or may not have been made aware by the government, yesterday, shortly after noon, a large number of nuclear weapons were fired at Pfiffenhaven by the government. Bribery was the order of the day; why, I myself was offered 20 million Prevaks if I would vote for Mr Arkadios!

Support me, and I will work for you with all my strength."

As the senior intelligence officer for the carrier strike group, he was well versed in what a speech like this could do. He immediately got to work on yet another force-multiplier scheme. But first, he began uploading the speech to ISOC - no telling what else they could think of for utilizing it.

He put together a broadcast of his own, directed at the nearest coastal areas, but would be broadcasted much more widely thanks to the Sapphire mesolites being launched to augment the Jades. For expediency, he decided to use his own voice, which he deemed good enough to get the job done.
"To all Prevanian soldiers and citizens within the sound of my voice,
I am Commander 'Tomi', and I'm here on behalf of your friends in the HCSK Navy and Marines. You've all heard from Elektor Aristeides tonight on a very important matter, a matter that has an effect on the entire nation of Prevania, and indeed all of western Nova. The world has been watching as the situation in your nation has deteriorated, even down to the use of nuclear weapons on your own soil. So far, everything that Elektor Aristeides has said can be corroborated either with hard evidence or circumstantial evidence that is too coincidental to ignore, all of which are in the hands of your neighbors here in Nova, with whom your hardships are shared.

It's time to begin the end of this series of unfortunate and tragic events. We have come here with other nations of the region to give you, the Prevanian people, the means to achieve that end. For anyone who is ready to put down the black flag of 'no quarter' in exchange for the white flag of 'let's talk truce', we are here to help you balance the power in your favor. Military units, militias, citizens organizations - contact us any way you can. Let's put an end to madmen who think that the relative values blood and money can be expressed in an exchange rate, and that the rights and the will of the Prevanian people can be sundered and seared by atomic fires.

This is Commander 'Tomi', and I'm here, waiting to help you."

North Katonazag, HCSK
"The Kártyabarlang" Army Exercise Range

The 4th Armored Division had been packed up on Palmland mercenary airships on what had been originally been touted as an exercise. Once the troops got into the field, they were then informed otherwise, that they were actually on standby rapid deployment notice. They weren't told where. This ended up being for the better, as the original destination had also changed from the shores of Lamoni to fend off invasion, to the shores of Prevania to quell a violent nuclear coup and civil war. But even only the senior officers knew this much.

On all the airships' loudspeakers, the giant voice boomed. "Attention all Army and Palmland personnel! We are go for our mission, prepare to move out in 15 minutes! All personnel, to your stations!"

Proportionate Retaliation - Arkadian Nuclear Massacre of Anti-coup Protesters
Image
Image

Above are some of the first images transmitted by a rescue team in Pfiffenhaven, of drifts of fallout dust across the shattered landscape, and of the bleak devestation wreaked as retaliation to annihilating resistance against the current, alleged illegal Direktor of Prevania. It appears that most analysts have taken this as a sign that Arkadias is no longer willing to attempt to use peaceful means to hold his apparantly unwarranted position, and will resort to utmost annihilation of all protest. The international community is slowly reacting, as nation after nation declare righteous states of utmost horror and disgust of Mr Arkadias.

West of Prevoygrad

The drones were quickly shot down, as expected. Yet as each missile plume was detected, each launch flash registered, a GPS co-ordinate was calculated. And then, in true efficiency, a missile was fired for each one. This time, for the assumed mobile positions, longbow missiles were being used - light, fast SSMs, carrying heavy cluster warheads. Behind them, groups of the remaining sledgehammer missiles were being launched, to signal their escalation - another 90, mixed cluster and solid warheads, targeted to wreak havoc on both the stationary lafayette batteries surface installations as they tried to shoot down the sudden surge of missiles, and yet more civil targets: alongside the oil refineries, the dockland areas, substations, and above all major power stations. Any power station described as non-nuclear was a target - hopefully, destablising the national grid would cause the power losses needed to take advantage of any lulls in Lafayette fire.

Behind the missiles, another squadron of fighters was flying in, this time closer than before at a mere 40km. As the vehicles banked away, they released further payloads of Scorpion missiles direct at the lafayette batteries, before turning for a quick getaway.

As the missile barrage and aircraft attempted attacks continued, the first advances were started. Whilst the enemy took to defending the gap that the Alfegans were trying to force direct to Prevoygrad, as hundreds of missiles poured into the small area of coastline to try take out stationary and mobile assets, the ekranoplans were moving.
Cutting in low, far below the horizon of coastal RADAR, a squadron were rapidly approaching the Prevanian coastline. A total of five craft were moving in, fifty kilometres south of the edge of missile fire, aiming for a river. The further they could fly inland at this height, the better - and that meant flat expanses of water and land on which surface effect would work. The large Type 89 craft could carry a company of aeromarines each - eighty elite soldiers, mounted aboard their Driftwood-class Amphibious evhicles, making for total of 320 overall, in 37 IFVs, two Missile carriers, and a Command vehicle. Hopefully, the advance from behind the coast would allow a quick shutdown of the coast's section of AA and other defence vehicles and positions, the sheer element of surprise of troops actually being on Prevanian soil (and experienced fighters at that) working to their favour.

Behind, moving in to support, a pair of destroyers, guarding a helicopter carrier, edged towards the coast. Hopefully, with the AA down, a full-blown landing of a whole regiment of aeromarines could commence.

"We're a Fegosian aeromarine CBRNE team, and we're here to try and help survivors, and find the surviving leadership. You need to tell us where Direktor Berenovski is, otherwise we will not be able to help him escape this place safely. If he survives."

It was horrific how much damage had already been done to the man - it was unlikely that he would survive. As they slowly carried the stretcher up, the section commander looked at his timer - they had minutes left to get back to the safety of the IFV.
"We can't stay here much longer, so we really need to know."

General von Lichtenlade peered over a map with blurry eyes. It was increasingly difficult to maintain focus, and only the far away sound of artillery and sonic booms kept him awake. Perhaps there was something to the words of his second in command, who even now tried to hide his irritation at his superior’s stubbornness. “Status report?” he asked, lifting his eyes from the map, “We’re within acceptable parameters sir, the assault on the Port is underway, and we’ve received substantial support from the air force. It won’t be long now.” The General nodded, rising to his full height.

In the distance, the artillery kept pounding at Prevanian positions, the sound of explosions having a rhythm all of their own, but other than that, the room was silent. The general threw one more look at the map, before grunting in satisfaction. “Very well then. I’ll catch a bit of sleep before the next stage of the operation. Wake me up if anything goes wrong.”

The general picked as his resting place a makeshift bed in a storage closet adjacent to the ‘staff room’. He settled down, and like all old soldiers, fell asleep instantly, ignoring the sounds of war outside.

He was woken from his slumber hours later, by a gentle knock on the door. He was instantly awake, and in a swift movement jumped from the bed. “Yes, what is it?” “Sir, they’re going to be here soon.” Very well, I’ll be right there.”

The general’s clothes were crumpled, his boots lacked their usual polish and he was certain his cap had seen better days, but he wasn’t going to be deterred by such minor factors. The officer assigned to waking up the general could only watch in awe as his commander came out of the closet as if he wasn’t even close to a war zone and was actually preparing for a parade. It was one of those secrets many would have paid hard cash to find out.

Knocking himself out of his stupor, the officer followed the general to the staff room, where another officer briefed the man. “Good morning sir. All’s going according to plan so far.” “The port?” “Initial resistance was stiff, but we were making steady inroads before the Elektor’s speech.” “Reactions?” “The line… dissolved. Some units just turned tail and got out of there. Others surrendered after ducking it out for a couple minutes.” “Pockets?” “Only a couple of professional units are still resisting, nothing major, they’ll fall before the day’s over. It’s the same in the country side. Most LDF troops simply lay down their weapons and go home.” “ Reinforcements?” “They’ve already started unloading. We’ve got some mine clearing operations ongoing, but there’s no major obstruction to the process.” “I see. “

The commanders of various divisions trickled in the ‘staff room’. The general took the time to salute each and every one of them, whilst at the same time taking in their appearance with a critical eye.

Once all those expected arrived, and the Prevanian liaison was present, the general started talking. “Gentlemen, it’s good to see you all here.” The greeting was acknowledged with the stiff enthusiasm specific to atreans, nods and salutes. “But now that you’re here, we have to work to do, “ he motioned to the map he had prepared the other night. “As you well know, our troops have secured the areas vital to this operation even faster than anticipated, in no small amount thanks to the cooperation of our friends here. I intend to take advantage of this momentum.”

The officers all looked at the map, at the markings made there and quickly understood just which plan von Lichtenlade intended to use. “But this is insane! We have nowhere near enough air lift capabilities available to pull this off! ” one of the generals protested. General von Lichtenlade smiled, “On the contrary, we have that, and more, and available right here. Elektor Aristeides was heavy at work last night amassing quite the air ship armada for our use.”

The Prevanian liaison took his cue at that moment and started producing figures and numbers. The officers all nodded. “As you can see, the air lift capabilities are here. We just have to take advantage of them and move! We can’t afford to waste any moment and allow Arkadios and his ilk to organize resistance. “ Agreement. “Any moment wasted is a moment more for this war to drag on. We’re here to end this, and to do that, we need to reach Alfa. We need to reach Arkadios.”

The general’s declaration of intent didn’t catch the others cold. A few of the lower ranks gawked at the man, but most of the senior officers nodded in agreement. “This is how we’ll do it,” he motioned towards one of his subordinates, the man quick to replace the map on the table with another. “In essence, we’ll be hopping like locusts, using the Prevanian airships. Airborne troops will secure essential objectives and neutralize possible threats, whilst the bulk of the Airship Fleet will head west. Once there, we’ll capture a Port at the inner sea and make preparations for an island to island jump. As you can see, speed’s of the essence. Any question?” There were a few, but nothing the General wasn’t prepared for.”

It was a simple plan in appearance. Prevanian airships would carry Atrean troops, escorted by squadrons of Atrean Fighters. The vanguard would root out any SAM sites and secure the path for the ‘armada’ to pass. Then the rest would follow, whilst the troops on the ground would move to connect the dots towards the western shore. If all went well, it was only a matter of days before the first troops were ferried to Alfa.

Ambassador Letis was kept up to date with the situation on the frontlines. In her large, sun flooded office, she kept a close eye on the situation. “M’am?” her secretary barged in on her thoughts. “You have a visitor, Colonel Via. She says you’re expecting her.” “Yes. Let her in.”

The colonel entered the office a few scant moments later. She was young, almost too young for her rank. Her uniform was adorned with various decorations and medals, and the small flag on her breast spoke proudly of her service branch. “I trust you know why you’re here?” the Ambassador started. “Yes, I’ve kept up to date.” “Good. That spares me the explanations.”

Letis motioned towards a chair, and the colonel took the seat. She declined her host’s offers of tea or coffee, but accepted a glass of water. There was some unrest on her face. “So, why me?” she asked the question that was troubling her thoughts. “You know the answer to that. There’s no one else the Empress would trust more.” “Still, I’m nowhere near the rank needed for command.” “And you’ve got plenty of experience in the field already. You’re perfectly suited for this mission.” “I see.”

After a rather lengthy meeting, Colonel Via went out of the ambassador’s office with a frown on her face, but with determination clearly shining in her eyes. Her driver waited for her to get in before asking the question burning his tongue. “We moving m’am?” “Just a couple thousand miles” she replied cryptically whilst her hands were busy working on her laptop.

The colonel’s mind was filled with information. This is going to be easy, she thought sarcastically as she viewed the data collected by the army. She was supposed to be in command of the medical aspect of the operation’s relief component, but whilst they could get her there, the army wouldn’t provide air lift to keep her mobile hospitals, mobile. She was however, nothing if not inventive.

Internal Communication. Urgent.

Ensure the availability of twelve air ships for the usage of the MedCorps. Load up mobile hospitals 12 through 24 on them and insure that patience can be treated aboard them.

I don’t care how you do it. I want everything ready before I get there.

Colonel Via.

There, that did it. The representatives of the MedCorps already in Prevania would scramble to get her the air ships she needed, otherwise there would be… consequences.

Delta

Captain Theseus made his way through the streets escorted only by a handful of men. On the sides, those more courageous amongst the prevanians were offering sandwiches and drinks to his troops. From place to place, the Prevanian Flag fluttered freely alongside that of the Empire. It was the same on the Atrean vehicles moving between street.

The captain’s destination was easily found. Being able to talk prevanian made obtaining instructions easy, and the captain could navigate his way around the streets with ease. “Ah, there it is.” He frowned as he took in his destination. “This isn’t good.”

The temple that the captain was so eager on seeing had been affected by the fighting last night. It was clear that although no direct hits were registered, debris littered its surroundings, and dirt tarnished the sides of the building. “Right, you lot, get cleaning.” The men he looked at started moving. “And you lot, go buy me an offering for the Gods. Make sure the price is right, you don’t want to anger the gods by ripping of people out of their hard earned work.”

Theseus, as his name revealed, believed in the Prevanian interpretation in regards to divinity. There were those in Atrea that found this interpretation more close to their liking, the religious freedom of the Empire allowing them to express their belief.

In any other operational theatre, the captain would have refrained from expressing his faith in such a manner, but he had received special permission in this case. He wasn’t naïve enough to believe it was for his own benefit, but here the gesture would serve to reassure the civilian population. His own belief that the gods would look favourably upon him and preserve him during this campaign as a result of the sacrifice came only as a secondary issue.

Coast of Alpha

Diodoros Theophylaktos came into the house, checking the safety catch before placing his rifle down in the umbrella stand. "Ligeia! I'm home!" he called, but there was no response. She was due to have got home by now, but with the current situation, getting anywhere by road was a long and slow process. He slouched over to the lounge, reaching for the television listing. Oh, good, it was on now. He picked up the remote and turned the television on just in time to hear the familiar tune...

Oh, that was odd. The image had suddenly disappeared, being replaced by a sea of static. Just as suddenly, an image returned. A military type was sitting there. That was odd, that was most certainly not a Prevanian Army officer. Any doubts about his foreign-ness were dispelled as soon as he started speaking - not only was he speaking English, but he was speaking it with a horribly foreign accent.

So far, everything that Elektor Aristeides has said can be corroborated..."

The television suddenly cut out. All the lights in the house went out. He heard a large noise in the distance. Grabbing his rifle, he rushed outside. There, he was greeted with a rising column of smoke from the nearby coal power station. The duplicitous bastards! He started running for his LDF rally point, sure that something had to be about to happen.

As it was, nothing did happen, except for a large blackout. The Alfegan missiles had damaged enough power stations to disrupt the grid. The Laser defence batteries were unaffected - they had first priority on all power. It was the inhabitants of the coastal areas who suffered, as they were left with large blackouts as the limited power was re-routed to important military and civil installations. Coming so soon after the HCSK's promises of friendship, it was a propaganda disaster for the Fegosian Union. The LDFs strengthened their resolve in the face of the FU attacks that were targeting the civilian population. The contrast between the Atreans and the FU was obvious, and made by many - whereas the FU spoke honeyed words whilst attacking civilian power stations, the Atreans were helping the populace.

The effects of the Alfegan bombardment had been devastating. The long range SAMs were able to fire off their missiles at the incoming missiles, hoping to wipe out as many as possible. The troops on the front line watched as the missiles roared overhead to engage the enemy. 50 long-range SAMs were launched at the incoming Longbows, some of which found their targets. Approaching further in, the remaining missiles were targeted by the Rapier systems, their crews frantically setting the systems to fire automatically, before seeking shelter. Closer in still, they were engaged by the Starstreak IIs. The Lafayette batteries, designed to defend against MIRVs, were minimally effective against the low-flying missiles, only being able to engage them shortly before they came over the coast. As the three successive waves of missiles hit, chaos ensued. The exposed Rapier systems were all but wiped out, with an urgent order sent to headquarters for replacements, which were sent from the regional reserve. Fortunately for the troops, they were not targeted, but the power infrastructure suffered grievously.

The ekranoplans, however, would not have so easy a time. The Starstreak II infrastructure had not been affected by the bombardment. The LDF troops watched through binoculars as the ekranoplans approached, readying their MANPADS for firing once they entered range.

From further ashore, inside a deep bunker, radar operators watched with interest as a trio of warships approached the river delta. They were signalled out for destruction. Seconds later, from silos in the area, a dozen Harpoon missiles leapt out, heading for the ships.

Well, the Alfegans were friendly, so he reckoned he was safe in telling them, "As far as I know, he headed to the Temple," he stopped to cough, "A lot of them went their to pray to Poseidon, but he did not help them." He smiled wryly, before his face contorted as he threw up.

Task Force Ricardo

Oh, Zeus, what do I do now? Hyakinthos, beseeched the greatest of the Gods, but he did not deign him with an answer. It had been several hours since Elektor Aristeides' appeal, and he had still to decide what to do. Would joining the Elektor constitute a dishonour to the memory of the Direktor? An underling rushed in, "Sir, the HCSK fleet has just broadcast this," he exclaimed, handing the Admiral a USB stick. He plugged it in and played the video file.

Well, that sounded positive. Handing the memory stick back, he made his way to the bridge. "Status report?" A Commodore turned to him, "The Alfegans have just launched some sort of strike. Cruise missiles, SSMs, aeroplanes; the lot." "What, whilst the broadcast was going on?" "Indeed, Sir, we believe they have hit a number of power stations in the area." Oh, Zeus, what were his allies doing. Well, they had certainly made up his mind for him. Giving orders for the Task Force to converge on Delta via the nearest safe route, he sent the following message to his allies:

Code: Select all
TO FEGOSION UNION FLEETS FROM ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET HYAKINTHOS ATHANASIUS OF TASK FORCE RICARDO STOP I HAVE CHOSEN TO RECOGNISE ELEKTOR ARISTEIDES AS THE TRUE LEADER OF PREVANIA STOP AM RENDERING MY ASSISTANCE TO HIM AND TO THE ATREANS STOP ADVISE YOU DO LIKEWISE STOP REQUEST THAT YOU HALT YOUR ATTACKS ON CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE STOP THE ELEKTOR AND THE ATREANS WILL ACOMPLISH YOUR GOALS FOR YOU WITH FAR FEWER CASUALTIES STOP END MESSAGE

Postby The Black Plains » Sat Jun 26, 2010 3:51 am

Six-thirty pm on a monday. Joseph Mansor; Capitalist Prime, has just finished eating dinner with his son and wife. They are now relaxing in the parlor. Jason Mansor, the Minister of Defense to the Security Syndicate, was pooring them hot brandy and coffee. Petra Mansor, the wife and mother, was relaxing and perhaps reminiscing slightly when she accepted a cup of coffee from her son. Their family friend and Foreign Minister, Peter Cantrell, walked in at a leisurely pace. He nodded to Petra, then stared at the nation's leader with a slight curve of his lip that almost appeared to be a smile and stated simply, "I found your water." Joseph paused. He stared at his minister and inquired simply, "Good God can't it wait til I'm drunk?". "No", was the reply. The three men in the room quickly filed out one after the other into the map room. Petra was left in her lonesome, sipping her coffee. But she was used to it by now.

The map room was just that. A room with, as Joseph so humbly put it, "Ten shitloads of maps." It was rather small, but well lit to read the fine print on the parchment. Joseph talked to his son and foreign minister while he scuffled around, looking for the proper rolled up map somewhere in the chaotic mess called a map-cubby. "Have you been following the... invasion?" His son replied first, "I should hope so, seeing as I'm the minister of Defense." The Foreign Minister replied second, "Yes... the Huns have taken the entire province have they not?". At this Jason interjected, "That can't be good for the profit margin-" only to be interrupted by his father, still searching for the map, "Screw the profit margin... we didn't have too many clients in Tal-winsor... but... Ah! Here it is!", he had found the map, "As I was saying, we do have something of great importance there." Joseph paused to roll the map out onto the small square table and the three crowded around it. "You see..." he continued, "It occupies almost all of our sea space and has the majority of our ports. In fact in the other provinces that border the sea... such as Tal-Fescin or Bryn, there is almost no suitable terrain for a port. Now what does this mean for us as a protection agency slash pseudo-de facto leadership? Absolutely nothing. However, I own Syntacorp Uranium as you know... and we export mainly from the ports in Tal-Winsor. With the Amazonian Huns, the sneaky little devils, occupying that province, we can't do that. At least not easily. We have to go aaaaall the way around and by that point we need somewhere to stop and refuel. We need a hub if you will... and since the Amazonian savages seem to have no intention of leaving any time soon, we had best look into that option. So. Show me where your damn island is, Cantrell.

At this prompt, Peter muttered something and unfolded the piece of paper he had in his pocket. After several failed attempts, he finally deciphered which way was north and proudly slammed the paper onto the table and gleamed at the two men present. The three of them crouched over to squint at the map. There was a strange image of four large islands and several dots. On one of the larger southern islands there was a circle drawn encompassing the eastern part of the island and, scribbled next to it, read, "Good plase 4 port." Jason and Joseph Mansor immediately burst into raucous laughter. "Good God, Cantrell...", Jason said while wiping his eyes, "Did you use pencil because you ran out of crayons?" Peter was obviously displeased. He clenched his teeth and said, "There's a better map on its way-", but was interrupted by Joseph, "Hey, Jason look at this... he spelled 'place' wrong! Hahahahaha!" Followed by several more bouts of laughter and eventually contented sighs, Peter continued, "A better map is on its way, but this is a rough image of the island nations. There's currently a huge conflict going on there with the Elektor against the Direktor (essentially a prime minister of some sort), against a plethora of foreign nations. The Elektor seems to be rebelling against the Direktor's rule. What's more, they seem to be winning. If we play our cards right we can get some free land out of this deal in an ideal location for your Uranium hub."

"Do so.", was the only response. Each individual went his separate way. Joseph to his bed, Jason to his lover, and Peter to his typewriter.

To The Thalassocratic Oligarchy of Prevania, Elektor Aristeides presiding, dear sirs;

Syntacorp Uranium is in need of an overseas hub/refueling station. We would be very interested in the Beta Island of your nation. Particularly a sheltered harbor on the Northern Coast. We were thinking the one near the east-most tip, but we have no dying preference. Syntacorp Uranium would provide overly generous monetary compensation for the possession, not annexation or colonization, of the afforementioned harbor. They would build everything, you would not need to pay a cent. What's more, the Security Syndicate of the Black Plains would aid you in your efforts and struggles for the current war if you agreed to the lease. The actual lease, however, you will need to discuss with Syntacorp. If I/Syntacorp must dole out the agreement with that specific Novan Island-Nation individually then I/we shall do so. Good luck.

"Take this to the postal bureau for delivery to the proper nation.", Peter said tersely to his Security Syndicate guard. The guard's reply was, "Sir, my duty is to guard, not to be your messenger boy.", with a slight tone of disdain. Peter smiled warmly, "I see then, would you prefer to guard the Eastern Front?" There was a pause. "No sir.", came the soft reply. "Well then, you'd better get a move-on, messenger boy.", Peter said while handing over the note with yet another warm smile. "Don't you know there's a war on?"

Delta

Elektor Aristeides reclined on a sumptuous klinia and prepared for the symposium. Unfortunately, his usual drinking partners had had other engagements, so he would just have to dine with his underlings, who would use the opportunity to bring any important matters to his attention. A servant entered with a silver platter and placed it on the table. He surveyed the food in front of him: his chef had really outdone himself this time, having provided freshly-killed albatross cooked with wild rosemary and olive oil. "Your health, gentlemen," he declared to his fellow diners, as per tradition, before taking a sip from his drinking cup.

Picking up a leg, he started to feast. "Anything important for me today?" he asked. His secretary responded immediately, "Well, the Atreans have made a request for 12 further airships. They want to convert them into mobile hospitals." Demosthenes licked his fingers before responding, "What a good idea. See to it that they get all the airships they need," he instructed. "Oh, and Demosthenes, we have received an interesting message from Syntacorp Uranium." "Hm, pass it over." The secretary passed the Elektor the piece of paper, which he inspected.

"Oh, capital, capital!" he exclaimed, "this is exactly what I needed to reassure the business community that I will treat them in a totally reasonable and fair fashion. Here, take this down." His secretary got out his laptop and started typing, leaving greasy marks on the keys.

Dear Mr Cantrell,

Your offer sounds very reasonable. We would be prepared to offer you the lease of an area of about 10 000 hectares, including 1 000 metres of waterfront at a currently underdeveloped harbour for a period of 100 years. We would ask no monetary recompense, we would merely request that at least half of the workers employed be Prevanian citizens.

We would gratefully welcome the aid of the Security Syndicate of the Black Plains. At the moment, we are mostly in need of aeroplanes and troops. The Atreans are doing admirably at their tasks, yet I fear that they will be stretched too thin. I would appreciate it most greatly if you could neutralise the former Combined Fleets base at Neuneubrandenburg. the Army has a large garrison there, and they need to be removed in order to secure our flanks.

Yours sincerely,

Elektor Demosthenes Aristeides of Industry, also Non-Executive Director of the Guild of Prevanian Airship Manufacturers

Peter read the reply voraciously. He tore it up. There was much to do. He began plunking on his typewriter. "Typists..." he muttered to himself, "Who needs 'em?"

To all merchants, pirates, privateers, private ship owners, cruise ship owners, yacht owners, et cetera:
A letter of marque is hereby being issued on the hull of any Combined Fleets based at Neuneubrandenburg in Nova/Prevania. Your ships will be used to supplement the Syndicalist Navy in a naval operation in defense of the Novan homeland. For every ship you sink you will be paid, in cash, three million barter notes. For every ship captured you will be paid, in cash, seven million barter notes and you will be able to do whatever you like with the ship itself. It will be yours. Assemble at Jathigo Bay.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SSBP Mercenaries-

All Syndicalist Army Personnel not stationed at either the Eastern Front or Orange through Red level posts will be dispatched to Jathigo Bay to await further instruction.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Citizens of the Black Plains-

Noting the dispatchment of the majority of core Syndicalist Mercenaries, a reserve force of Home-bound Law-enforcement Militiamen is hereby called to assemble. You will be paid three fourths the rate of a normal mercenary in the Syndicalist Army and you will receive all the benefits as well as your living and quarters while you are employed by us. You will be paid either in barter notes or in gold.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Elektor Aristeides-

We are mobilizing to perform the tasks that you asked of us. In no less than a week, Jathigo Bay will look like all of The Black Plains afloat. We do not have very much of an airforce to speak of, however we have issued a letter of marque to our vast amount of merchants, who already have little to do due to the occupation of the Amazonian leeches, will be more than willing to risk their vessels to obtain a cash prize for their efforts. This will supplement our navy greatly and we look forward to "covering your flank" as you put it. We're also dispatching a large number of mercenaries to your aid.

Your Obedient,
-P. Cantrell

The mercenaries marched boldly through the capital in their armor with Joseph Mansor, their leader, waving them on from the balcony. Cantrell whispered in his ear, "Look at them... they're practically boys. Most of them won't make it. Mansor stated blandly, while waving and smiling at a particularly enthusiastic soldier, "Good... Less that we have to pay." Jason Mansor, head of Defense, stared on in mild shock with a look of guilt. "These are my men. I should be with them. Let me go, father." The leader looked him straight in the face and said, without batting an eye, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid." This cliched movie reference only made Jason angrier and more defiant. "I'm ready! How dare you tell me I'm not!" His father waved his hand nonchalontly and said, "Oh yes, what would I know, it's not like I lead and won a revolution or anything. Oh wait that's exactly what I did. How bout you drive out a million governmentalists and see what you're like afterwards." The argument subsided.

In the day that had elapsed since the sending of the last Monavian communiqué, a chain of unanticipated events had caught government officials, military brass, and perhaps most of all, Minister Carter, completely by surprise. While Carter was waiting for news of any reply from either Direktors Arkaios or Berenovski, he was given graver news that afternoon. Something was amiss in Prevania.

Far above the ground, orbiting in the chilly black expanse of low Earth orbit, observation and surveillance satellites were transmitting footage of a diplomatic catastrophe. Carter’s anticipations for an eventual ceasefire and diplomatic settlement had only been set farther back as his efforts crumbled under the weight of another battle.

Mount Talus Complex
Northern Monavia

Satellite controllers had been viewing data displays and footage of ground movements within Prevania for several days by the time of the fatal exchange. They had received confirmation that Carter’s correspondence had been wired and faxed to Prevania, and that a response was pending. The military had an interest in determining whether diplomacy was effective so as to avoid entering into any hostilities with the rebels, especially if they could be convinced to surrender or agree to a ceasefire.

As it was, General White was discussing possible strategies for an armed intervention if the need should arise. The Minister of Defense had arrived at the bunker with several other officers, including the vice marshal to who White answered. The meeting had already proceeded on for over an hour and a half, and appeared to be nowhere near completion. There was insufficient data on Prevanian defenses and tactics to formulate a successful attack stratagem, and as such they would have to wait.

In the satellite operations rooms, controllers had been watching Prevanian missile silos and launch facilities for any more attacks against Piffenhaven. When additional missiles began to exit their launchers, the controllers knew that another attack was taking place. “General White, another attack is being launched against Piffenhaven,” a monotone voice droned over the intercom.

“Gentlemen, I must attend to this business with the Prevanians. Apparently, they don’t have the same regard for diplomacy that more civilized Novans have.” White quickly exited the room, reaching the command center as word came in that the missile salvo and bombings from the mainland was being met with more missiles and a fighter counterattack from Piffenhaven. Berenovski better have an ace in his sleeve, or he won’t be able to hold out much longer against this scale of attack.

Minutes later, as bombs rained upon the bunkers on Piffenhaven, worse news arrived. “General, a satellite has detected a small amount of radiation on the coast! Arkadios must be using radiological weaponry!”

“Is the radiation consistent with such a weapon?” he inquired.

“No, however, the radiation is clearly due to the attack. We cannot be sure of what it is, but we can’t afford to take any chances.”

“Order all of our kinetic strike satellites into position over Prevania! I want full bombardment coverage if this goes nuclear!” the general barked. “Bring our ASAT arsenal online and prepare to target any Prevanian assets that move into attack position over our allies!”

Satellites next caught sight of the appearing missile silo preparing to launch what was clearly a very large missile. “General…Berenovski is retaliating with what appears to be a nuclear missile.”

“I need to notify the king of this immediately!” shouted the Minister of Defense, seizing a telephone and dialing the king’s office. Two rings later, a familiar voice was coming from the other end of the line.

“General, I did not anticipate you to be calling me at this time.”

“Your Imperial Majesty, the Prevanians are firing missiles at one another again, and now it appears that nuclear weapons are about to be launched. White is handling other aspects of this mess.”

“I will reopen communication shortly. Minister, compose yourself,” he said, hanging up.

Three minutes later, the king was in a command bunker beneath the palace. Compared to the tension-laden atmosphere of the Strategic Orbital Command, the palace bunker was a far more quiet and serene location. After activating several pieces of equipment and view screens, the king looked upon the scene in dismay. The missile had been launched; its impact with KMKI Headquarters was imminent. Nuclear missiles from the mainland slammed into Piffenhaven, one by one, enveloping the small island in a growing cloud of fire and smoke.

Reopening communication took but seconds, by which time White was coordinating communications with his counterparts in Katonazag, Alfegos, Damirez, and elsewhere. Looking at the main display, White’s gaze froze, as a sight so terrible to behold unfolded with the fury of unbridled destruction. His normally stiff and composed demeanor had begun to deteriorate as he observed the fiery end of all those gathered in the facilities on one small island. He began to mutter incoherently as he saw the results of diplomacy vanish in a flash of nuclear fire. The only words his subordinates could make out were “God help them all.”

Speaking over the muttering of the general and the back and forth salvos of commands between controllers, Minister Blake turned to the monitor showing a video uplink that had by now been established with the command bunker. “Your Majesty, it appears that diplomacy has finally failed.”

“Intervention…appears to be the only option.”

The quiet in the minister’s office was disturbed by the sudden ringing of his desk telephone. As he picked up the headset, he never could have expected the news that was now reaching him. “Hello?”

“Minister Carter, there has been a problem in Prevania,” answered the king’s voice.

“What problem might Your Majesty be referring to?”

“Direktor Arkadios launched another strike against Piffenhaven, and Berenovski began to mount a counterattack. During this time, a radiation signature was detected on Piffenhaven. Berenovski likely believed that radiological weapons were being used against the island and that he would have to retaliate. He fired a single nuclear missile at the mainland.”

“Did Arkadios retaliate?”

“He ordered a nuclear barrage against Piffenhaven. The island has been all but obliterated. The FUPF elements in the area were evacuated before any harm could come to them, but Berenovski is likely dead.”

“What is it that you are wanting me to do?”

“Correspond with your counterparts within the Fegosian Union. Send them copies of your correspondence with Berenovski and Arkadios. We need diplomatic solidarity if our intervention is to be successful.”

“Intervention? We have no business in Prevania.”

“We have a vested interest in their stability. Refugees will come seeking aid. Government will demand loans. Prevania also has close geographic proximity to Monavia in comparison to our more distant neighbors. Besides, they nearly attacked FUPF assets. They may as well have declared war.

“For the while consider yourself relieved of having to write to Prevanians. We have our allies to support.”

OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION

OFFICE OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
IMPERIAL FEDERATION OF THE MONAVIAN EMPIRE

To Senator Se’rai Ge’ca, Foreign Minister of Alffegos,

Minister Ge’ca:

In light of the recent nuclear exchange in Prevania, it is likely that a police action will be declared by royal decree. Monavian intervention is almost certain at this point.

Enclosed are copies of all correspondence with Direktors Arkadios and Berenovski during the last week, as well as copies of their correspondence with myself.

Sincerely,

The Right Honorable Frank Carter, Minister of Foreign Affairs

With his contacts in St. Istvan and New Zevkhay notified, Minister Carter needed only to await their replies.

Royal Residence
Chalcedon, Monavia

The king spent the next hour drafting a proposal for a royal decree which would declare a police action against the Arkadian faction in Prevania, while attempting to maintain the high degree of composure that was characteristic of his method of governing. With the aid of several cups of tea, a slice of chocolate cake, and some time stroking his daughter’s cat, he eventually completed an initial draft. That afternoon, a courier was dispatched to transmit orders convening an emergency session of Parliament in which his decree could be presented. Within three hours, Parliament was assembled, ready to receive word of the reason for the emergency session.

Shortly before eating a light dinner, Charles had revised a few lines in the decree and prepared a final version. Copies were taken by courier to Parliament, where they were delivered to the Chancellor and Speaker of the Representative Assembly for reading.

Parliament
Chalcedon, Monavia

At eight-thirty that evening, the emergency session of Parliament officially began. As several dignitaries filed in, they were each greeted by shouts and applause while their entrance was announced. Ten minutes later, the king and queen entered, proceeding to the rostrum. After a few minutes of waiting, the king briefly spoke.

“Monavians, countrymen, members of Parliament, and all those assembled tonight to witness this extraordinary proclamation, I bring to all of you grave news. The violence in Prevania has escalated into a civil war of proportions not seen in this corner of Nova since the events of three-quarters of a century ago on our own continent. Nuclear weapons have been used to obliterate an island where the allegedly deposed, although more likely overthrown Direktor of Prevania had sought safety.

“Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands lie dead. The populace of Prevania is now caught between two violent factions, while another member of the Prevanian government attempts to restore order. We cannot afford to have an unstable country embroiled in conflict so close to our waters. We cannot afford to have their pirates and mercenaries for hire loosely going about in our corner of Nova. Only through intervention can we bring about a cessation of hostilities and preserve the balance of power in a favorable manner.

“Tonight, Her Holy Imperial Majesty and I have decided to decree a police action against the Arkadian faction in the Prevanian civil war, to render aid to FUPF and FURRF personnel, to put an end to all hostilities, by force if necessary, within Prevania itself, and otherwise bring about a decisive and satisfactory resolution to this conflict.

“With a firm and unwavering reliance on our principles as a military power, and as a nation of honorable people, we pledge to our allies our assistance and support. May we be successful in our endeavor to stabilize Prevania, may we achieve victory, and mayGod bless the people of the Monavian Empire. Thank you.”

JMHQ - New Zevkhay

The response from Prevania had shed light on a fact that they had hoped not to happen - the Atreans were getting involved. That was something they most definately did not want to happen - an Atrean foothold in this part of Nova, and a trial that the Atreans would likely rig to garner maximum favour with the Prevanians? It seemed likely, yet the Atreans had overlooked one thing - the race to gain the illegal Direktor. And, that people would still rise against the Atreans, a final stand by KMKI to try and protect their employer.
"Get me hospital airships, engineer crews... the lot. Once we get a foothold in Prevania, we can start fixing the lot, make it better and all that. And get the bloke on the Ha'vi to try and talk before blowing half the country away?"

The race was on - who would get to Prevoygrad first, with the least damage to their reputation?

-----

Alpha - Near Prevoygrad

The blackouts across the coasts were coming into effect, as per the standard Alfegan strategm. The military, they knew, would be parasites, sucking off all the power from the national grid to their exclusive use. Whilst not perfect, it was a good guide for targeting. As the anti-air infrastructure started coming close to collapse, it would be the land positions that would now be targeted. The Prevanians may have slowly been aware that the situation was escalating, signalled as a third wave of missiles was let off. Another 90 Scorpion missiles, exhausting the airship compliment, and a smattering of Sledgehammer missiles were aimed towards military installations across the coast - remaining missile sites, bunkers at potential chokepoints, airfields and barracks. They weren't assmuning this time - whilst the lights were a sign, they knew that they could quite possibly be hospitals as well, so only could be used as an indicator, on which they could act.

Further south, the ships sat calm as the missiles were detected. At the edge of their range, they were easy to track from the distance, allowing the crews to anticipate the strikes. Soon after, the defensive fire commenced. Point defence technology had been developed in advance of the goalkeeper and phalanx systems that other nations deployed, as a result of the airship demand for effective systems as such, and thus there was little competition. Seven point defence weapons rapidly took out a wave of incoming missiles, quickly eliminating the threat posed. It was in that crucial reload period that disaster struck. There came a massive blast as one of the destroyed took a hit to the stern, rocking in the massive wake created. Onboard, chaos quickly converted to order as damage control procedures took effect. The engine had been taken out, but the ship was still afloat. Just. Before the Harpoon batteries had a chance to finish the vessel off, the retaliation began. Whilst out of gun range, six of the eight tomahawk missiles carried aboard were put to good use targeting the launch facilities.

The starstreak missiles were short-range devices, relying on the weak armour of fighter aircraft to bring them down. The missiles, ranged to near eight miles, each relied on three submunition warheads, darts so to speak, to maximise the chance of hitting a target. With a mere 0.9kg of explosive atop, they were there with the assumption that in the small compact space of a fighter aircraft, a single hit would be guaranteed to hit something critical, underneath the thin heat-proof outer coating. As it was, the ekranoplans were built of sturdier stuff. As the vehicles took evasive manouveres, difficult at a flight altitude of 4 metres, the missile ekranoplan at point letting loose with a cluster of eight hellfire anti-surface missiles, the first submunitions began to hit. Small pockmarks lept up across the armoured sides of the vehicles, as the blasts shook the craft. Inside, casualities were taken, as crews scrambled to mount up in their much safer armoured vehicles, sealing themselves within. The flight crew themselves were the most hit in the attacks, as sections of hull ripped open, showering steel fragments across the large interior. The ekranoplans continued on, the closer ones actually returning fire with turret-based 12.7mm heavy machineguns, as they moved up the river. Within twenty seconds, the decision was taken to land - they had travelled nearly two miles inland in that short space of time, despite dodging artillery fire and the like, and now took it as a hint to slow down. Deceleration was rapid as the vehicles sudden turned from aircraft signatures to mere boats, impossible to target with conventional AA munitions. For one, it hadn't been fast enough - a hit to the crew compartment saw the vehicle twist slightly in mid air, before the vast wing dug into the water. The sudden strain easily flipped the vehicle, throwing it nearly a hundred metres onto the river bank, before exploding in a vast fireball. There were definately no survivors in the cataclysmic blast, as the four remaining ekranoplans cruised to land. Another slowed down and banked as an engine was hit, gliding on to shore.

Once on the river bank, the unloading rapidly started. The vehicles quickly left onto land, forming into their defensive ten-unit groups, before moving off towards objectives along riverside roads towards the coast. The AA positions that hadn't been destroyed, or which had remained hidden or mobile, would quickly be hunted down by the four remaining companies. The ekranoplans themselves took off, this time undergoing a remarkable transformation. Whilst before, they had hovered mere metres above the ground, mostly unladen they had enough conventional lift to take off, lumbering into the skies back towards the massing fleet. They would not be used for a while, as smoke trailed from damaged engines and moisture trails condensed around holes in the hulls.

On the ground, the first company rapidly approached the nearest AA positions that had been sighted. On the main road, they overtook the few confused civilian road users, whilst dealing with military vehicles seperately. Their thick armour meant only dedicated AT units would have a chance at taking them on - and the multipurpose 23mm autocannons would easily deal with anything, vehicle or infantry, who decided not to show signs of surrender to the rapidly moving units. They didn't stop moving for more than a minute - after all, that would be a sign that artillery could start trying to target them.

Another company was moving offroad, to capture the coastal high ground nearest to the river. Its significance as a firing point, AA spotting area and likely as a Lafayette installation meant that it was a priority target, that 80 aeromarines and their 10 IFVs would have little problem in dealing with.

The third company was headed directly to the coast, to check and hold the low ground - the landing area, when the helicopters finally came in.

--------------

Aboard the AS Ha'vi, the head of Fegosian assets in the region knew that there were problems. Alfegos had struck first, and had likely enraged people as it tried to bring the military infrastructure to its knees. Now was time to repair the damage. Sitting in front of a video camera held by the attached members of the Joint Military Media Corps aboard, the airman began to speak, the message transmitted on the main government and civil radio frequencies (barring emergency channels and channels used by the emergency services), on television, and in a massive bundle to mobile phone and landlines. With engineered signal heads and a massive list of numbers, the calls picked up by mobile phone antennae across the broadcast range were quickly transferred, the large data packages routed for mobile phones to voicemail and answer machines, and on landlines not operated by emergency services and hospitals, streamed in real time. Especially with the answer phone system on phones, the surge in use would not disrupt the phonelines for too long, allowing their use to continue.

Broadcast to the People of Prevania, Alpha Island

The Fegosian Union wishes to apologise for damages inadvertantly caused in this operation.

The current strikes were targeted at affecting the military. As such, the power outages were caused by the military draining your power from the national grid, rather than allowing such power to go to vital areas. The strikes have only targeted the military assets commanded by the illegal Direktor of Prevania.

If you join a militia or rally as a reservist, you are not defending your homeland - no, you are showing that you support a man whose will is to sell you off, piece by piece, for his own monetary gain. His interests are that you are bled dry by ravaging front corporations, your hard-earned money sucked off to his own private purse.

The Fegosian Union is here to put an end to this illegal Direktor Arkadias. He has point-blank refused to try and settle this diplomatically, by the nuclear annihilation of one of his so-called foes, condemning thousands of Prevanian citizens, just like you, to a horrible death. He has refused to allow unbiased international agencies from across the world to investigate his claims to power. And now, he calls you as a shield to try and hold on to his unrighteous position, sending you to die rather than facing a trial in front of International officials, under Prevanian and International law.

If you do not pick up your arms, you will be treated fairly and justly as a civilian, and your rights as a civilian will be recognised under the Geneva conventions. We will put money towards repairing damages, should your homes have been affected in our strikes against the military. If you have taken up arms, then remember that we never raise the black flag. We will accept your surrender, and if you are a reservist or militiaman will allow you to return to your home. If you continue to believe that misguided belief that Direktor Arkadias should be above the law, and should not be brought to account, and you continue to attack our forces headed to enforce the warrant on his arrest, then we will have no choice but to use proportionate force to stop you from threatening the lives of those who seek justice, and the majority who wish for peace and their best interests.

Please, do what is right, and we will do what is necessary. Thankyou.

The camera cut out, the mediaman giving the thumbs up.
"Well done sir. Let's hope it works. If not, we've got the television feed from Pfiffenhaven coming soon."

-----------------------

Pfiffenhaven

"Thankyou sir. We'll be away in no time."
The stretcher was labouriously carried back up to the surface, before being carried quickly into the back of an IFV. The doors sealed shut behind, as an air sniffer was passed through the air.
"Keep your equipment on, and leave the drone here. Let's get back to the ekranoplans."

The vehicles quickly picked up speed, as the doctor got to work trying to stabilise the man. After a quick field blood test, using coughed up sputum and a testing strip, the doctor looked in the first aid chest. With an IV line in, he wasted no time in connecting a fluid bag to the man's arms - the first stage of managing radiation sickness, after decontamination, was stabilising the metabolism. With large-scale cell death, the man would need care taken to ensure that electrolyte levels stayed constant, to stop system shock. From the symptoms, the doctor estimated a dose of a couple hundred Rads - with treatment, there was a chance of survival. After they got to a hospital, likely the infirmary aboard the AS Ha'vi, it would be a case of supportive therapy, using artificial dialysis and induced respiration to prevent kidney death from the mass of proteins released into the blood, pulmonary and cerebal edema, and general system shock. It would then be up to the body to heal itself, with the hope that the vital internal organs had not suffered too much damage. Infection was a real threat, yet a managable one.

At the ekranoplans, upwind enough of the blasts to avoid fallout for at least another few hours, suited men had set up a basic decontamination unit for the suited men - a hot pressure hose using sea water, brooms, and further decontamination showers within the ekranoplan. The lead men from the arriving three IFVs underwent the broom treatment, before stripping off their suits. The suits were thrown into a heavy plastic bag, so dense that it wouldn't even flutter in the wind - they required further decontamination. The weather was dark and forboding here, and all knew the very real menace that lurked out of sight, invisible to all. As many of the men showered, the patient was slowly treated. The shower water for him had been warmed, and desalinated. He was quickly stripped off, and kept under the warm water as he was gently washed, wiped from head to toe to remove any traces of radioactive dust, before a geiger counter was run across him. The internal contamination was still high, though the body had removed most of it in its various agnoising throes. The patient was then quickly dressed, before moving deep into the ekranoplan. Locked down onto the floor right next to the ventral gun position, the stretcher was quickly surrounded by medical equipment - blood was removed from a coolbox and linked up, and a breathing tube inserted into the trachea, linked to 100% oxygen. A small ECG unit was connected to the man's chest, now clothed in spare FEGOCAM digital camouflage. A red armband signified his status as a civilian patient, along with a second armband - radioactive injury. The three IFVs were left to be decontaminated by the second ekranoplan crew, as the craft prepared for takeoff, taking a priority journey straight to the nearest carrier with onboard hospital.

----------

The remaining IFV team responded to the call, as they searched around the periphery of the damage site. So far, nobody had been found. As the information came in from the other team, they changed course straight for the temple. On top, a high-resolution camera had been mounted in a waterproof case, and was now filming the destruction they were rocking into. Half-burnt houses, flatted buildings, and the signs of death everywhere. And, as they moved in, the gathering drifts of radioactive fallout, like snow. Above, there came a rumble of thunder, before the sky opened up - black rain, formed around radioactive dust and the pulverised remains of the island, impacting torrentially into the area. The feed was still clear from the camera, as the top-mounted spotlights were turned on - illuminating the horrible world around.

The temple was an easy site to find. The columns still stood in places, resiliant to the shockwave that had flatted the interior and blasted the roof away. The vehicles pulled up outside, before slowly mounting the rubble outside. Some of the columns had gone, which allowed them to drive right up into the temple. The lead vehicle panned the spotlight, looking down at the rubble.
"Section one, ten minutes, go!"
The men sprinted from the vehicle, spreading out into an extended line. They slowly began to sweep the area, moving forwards at a snail's pace, turning on head-mounted torches as they advanced. Using built-in speakers, the section leader shouted across the expanse, as rain continued to fall.
"Can anyone hear me? This is a Fegosian Rescue team - we're here to get you out of here."

Now and again, the men stopped at human remains, checking for a pulse and breathing - they had to be sure. At the occasional pile of rubble, a shovel was produced, as the men quickly tried to clear the lighter stuff, checking for anyone underneath. Behind them, once they had finished their ten minutes, another team were waiting to continue the search for as long as was safe. Onboard the camera IFV, the vehicle driver turned to a radio link, shortwave to relay to the ekranoplan remaining. The data from the camera was being sent via the military to ANN 1 and the broadcasting networks of allied nations, for broadcast to the world of the horrifying reality of what Arkadias had done - a news excluse like no other.

Jathigo Bay, Wednesday, O-Fourteen hundred hours.

The Secretary of Defense stood in awe at the brave men boarding the ships to sail to their likely demise. He should be with them. Jason clenched his jaw, remembering the words of his father. Some kind of leader he was, allowing his soldiers to march to their death for the sake of profit. A call over the speakers came to his ear, "Wolf Packs B and T should now board the SS Bryn."

Jason paused. There was nothing his father could do. He ripped off his jacket and tie and raced towards the boarding pad. He had arrived a minister on inspection duty and would leave a soldier.

The fleet left Jathigo Bay for its destination in Prevania. Within some time they would be merely five thousand kilometres away from their target. No stopping him now.

In the capital, Free Thallia.

"They say..." Cantrell mumbled, as he pulled out a dusty bottle of wine, "That Plainsian Grapes grow so ripe and succulent that they fall off the vine when it rains... they certainly make a good sweet-wine."

"I prefer dry wines, myself. However, I suppose this will do.", the nation's leader responded as he fetched two tumblers. Mansor and Cantrell were focusing on celebrating their future acquiry of a hub for Syntacorp (a company owned by Joseph Mansor). At this a tactics minister arrived, one of the Syndicate's finest. "Sir.", he began formally, "We've calculated the casualties with the scenario you posed and we deemed them unacceptable."
Now both the Foreign Minister and the leader looked up with raised eyebrows and said, simultaneously, "You deemed them?" The officer was out of line. He knew that. He blinked and repeated, "I meant to say they were high... projected forty percent casualties." The two politicians resumed setting up their wine and glasses. "Dismissed.", Mansor said calmly to the assembled officer. The tactician left, shutting the door behind him. Peter poored the wine into both tumblers with it nearly reaching the brim. Each took a glass and raised it. "To victory.", Mansor said in a monotone voice. Cantrell replied, "To victory."

They toasted their glasses together. As they did so, the blood-red liquid splashed out of their glasses and smattered on the table below.

OOC: forgot. I'll have specifics on my navy tomorrow... and the specifics of my army are already in my factbook. It will probably be a while (if ever) before I engage in naval combat. Probably... mostly ground combat.
Navy specs: tell me if I need to be more detailed, I will gladly add. I'm just not a huuuuge military buff. Like, "OH this gun does that! And this boat does this and this and this bullet arcs in a special way!" just not that into it. But if you really need weapon specs I can get them to ya.

Kryopulia

The massive cargo plane was finally landing, the screech of its wheels audible from a distance. Every other minute, another giant appeared from over the horizon carrying in its bowels men and machinery. But this was slightly special as attested by the small greeting committee waiting for its cargo doors to open. “M’am! It’s not safe yet!” On the still moving ramp, a woman appeared, moving like a storm. She was followed by several soldiers in uniform and two officers carrying an armful of documents, laptops and folders.

The woman jumped from the still moving ramp. “Not safe my ass! Stop complaining and get down here!” the soldiers followed. The woman moved at a brisk pace, going in a straight line towards the waiting greeting party. “Right. I’m here, you’re here, you salute, I salute, you say your lines, I say mine. Aren’t you glad we did that?” She didn’t allow any interruption, pointedly looking into the eyes of those that attempted to move. “Now that we’ve got all the formalities out of the way, let’s get down to business. Personnel? Materials? Doctors? Airships? And make it quick, I don’t have all day!”

The men looked at one another, none spoke. “Well? What are you waiting for?” the woman tapped her foot, her left hand resting on her hip. Finally, one of the officers moved out of the line and started talking. “Following our request, Direktor Aristeides made available the twelve airships we have requested, and more should they be needed. We’re already in the process of refitting them to fit our needs, the first four are already ready to go under field hospital accommodations.”

The woman nodded and then retrieved a small PDA device from her pocket, quick to input data on the device. As the man retreated back in line, another moved to take his place. “All doctors are ready. There’s been some complains about insufficient nurses allotted to the 24 MedCorps mobile hospitals here, but otherwise we’ve got a full complement, and the army promised support personnel until needed.” The woman was still focused on the PDA, but a slight motion of her head told them to continue and another started talking. “In regards to material, we’ve got enough to keep our hospitals working for one standard month. Estimates show that we’ll probably burn them faster than that. With some logistics support from Aristeides’s airships, we’ll keep them well supplied.”

The plane’s ramp was finally fully lowered, and the officers accompanying the woman joined her and the greeting committee. They smiled encouragingly at the men. “Colonel Via! What were you thinking!” one of them, a woman, exploded. The colonel turned and looked blankly at the woman for a few seconds before moving towards a waiting vehicle. “I wonder why you bother asking that. You already know the answer. She doesn’t. Not when there’s a job to do.” The other officer spoke, moving to join his superior, much to the obvious displeasure of the woman.

Inside the car, the colonel started round two of her impromptu greeting turned meeting. “Right, You’re going to take me to one of those airships. Get my luggage there, and do it fast, we’re leaving,” she stopped and looked at her watch. “We’re leaving in 25 minutes with the first four airships. And get me Direktor Aristeides and General von Lichtenlade on the line.” In another vehicle, the two assistants – slash – subordinates of the colonel were hanging on for their dear lives. “Can’t you go any slower?” “Not if we want to keep up with the colonel!” “Dear God!” “Hey, at least we’re not riding with her!”

Delta

Blitzkrieg. A word that dominated military thinking for decades, manoeuvre and speed joined together in a work of poetry. In Prevania, the Atrean Commanders were taking the concept to another level as they marched towards the western shores, pushing man and machine to their utmost limits. “You can rest enough when you’re dead!” was the saying most used by the soldiers and great pride was taken in getting further ahead than any other unit. The plan conceived by General von Lichtenlade was working.

The Atrean planes made sortie after sortie in support of the advancing troops, AA sites ahead of the airships cleared with extreme prejudice. Beyond bombs and bullets, the aviators also used other tactics, leaflets and papers leaving their bomb bays in a massive propaganda effort. Elector Aristeides’s speech was broadcasted every hour and Prevanians, volunteers, spoke without pause to military units on the island.

On the ground Atreans that spoke Prevanian and Prevanian that spoke Atrean were of great value in facilitating communications between soldier and civilian. Where possible, soldiers were dispatched to deal with the damage brought upon by battle, joining the civilians with the repairs. They were not many, not yet, but the numbers would increase as Engineer Corps were coming to mend the damage done by the campaign.

It was not however a march without opposition. Where many units disbanded, headed home, others offered stiff resistance and quick, furious battles were ignited, the Atrean bringing the overwhelming power of their artillery and air force to bear whilst units assaulted difficult positions. There were casualties, but the domination of the air space and the low mobility of the defenders insured that such hot spots were relatively easy to neutralize.

At the front, forward units found another issue to contend with. “We’re going too fast! At this rate we’ll have to stop and recoup.” “No. Just a bit more, just until we see the sea.” “But sir! We’re eighty kilometres ahead of our planned position! HQ won’t approve this! The men can’t take it anymore! We’ve been rushing ahead like madmen!” “If they can’t keep up it’s not my problem! We will stop soon. At. The. Sea.” “…Yes sir.”

The airships moving ahead of the armada moved swiftly, but even amongst them there was one that broke the pattern. “Sir, I think you should see this.” “What is it? Holly! The sea! How did we get here!?” “We’ve moved ahead of the column by at least twelve kilometres.” “Shit! Unload! Now!”

The first Atrean units to reach the Prevanian inner sea were met with resistance from the local garrisons, but the speed at which they arrived, the fury of their attacks and the increasing support of the populace meant that no truly organized effort could be mounted. There was a path now, from Kryopulia to the inner Prevanian Sea. The Azar had done their job once more.

Kryopulia

With the increasing number of arrivals, the location of the ‘staff room’ had to be changed. If von Lichtenlade was to wage a war, he would have to do it from a location that allowed for enough space. The small room in which he initially held meetings had been left for his own personal use, whilst a larger hall had been requisitioned as a command centre. Wires were hidden behind maps, desks were crammed together and a smell of sweat impregnated the air. The general stood at the centre of the mess, as immaculate as ever.

Despite the state of the room, one officer had the attention of the rest, talking directly to the general. “Well, with Direktor Aristeides going ahead and announcing our involvement, we’ve come under close scrutiny from other participants to this scuffle. Estimates show that they’ll increase the pace of their own operations now, and we’re looking at a window of opportunity that’s getting smaller by the hour.” The officers around the improvised table nodded gravely. “Until now they could guess at our involvement due to our massive movements, but no clear understanding of our motives and actions were given, but now…”

The general smiled. He lifted from his chair and brought his hands behind him, pacing in the small space available to him behind the table. “Perfect,” he spoke, still smiling. He waited, just enough for some of the confused looks on his subordinates to be replaced by understanding before explaining. “Perfect. With this, the path is clear. Arkadios is the key, and everyone knows it. We’ve made a bold move and got in the lead, now the others have to follow. But assembling men, materials and support takes time, time they don’t have. They’ll have to rush, make haste against the Prevanian positions in Alpha and distract them from us. The perfect distraction, and the beauty of it all is that they have no choice. If they delay, we’ll be there first. Perfect!”

The general stood down, allowing his words to sink in for those assembled. There was silence as more and more of the officers started looking at the general with astounded looks on their faces. “Sir? There’s a call for you, zero level priority.” The moment was interrupted by one of the general’s aides, a young officer. He acknowledged the woman, and, with only a nod, left the table.

Three soldiers were guarding the ‘staff room’. The room was by now adapted somewhat for the general’s use, an impromptu closet found for his clothes, and an inflatable bed resting in one of the corners. A mishmash of machinery stood on one wall, a screen and a camera distinguishable from the rest. Picking up the call, the general recognized immediately the face on the screen. “Your majesty!” He kneeled, bowing to the screen. “Siegfried. None of that.” The voice of the woman was stern, as if reprimanding a small child. “We’ve fought and bled together. I need no hypocrisy from you as well.” He moved slowly from his position, taking a seat.

“What do I owe the pleasure?” “Do I need a reason to call an old friend?” “With all the respect your majesty, I’m in the middle of a war.” “Minor inconvenience. But now that you mention it, how is it?” “It’s going well. We’ve had some casualties, but overall, resistance is lighter than expected.” “Good. Can you keep it up?” “Yes.” “Convinced as always. Very well, I’ll leave you to it, but Siegfried, I want a souvenir.” “M’am?” “Bring me Arkadios’s head on a plate.” “As you command.”

Heissenen

“Welcome, welcome!” Admiral von Eisenach rose from his seat to greet an unexpected guest. He even went as far as to pull out a chair for her use. He moved quickly, ushering the woman towards the seat. “Might I inquire why the honour of your visit?”

The woman was Ambassador Letis, better known as the Empress’s right hand and her presence often spelled trouble. “I see you haven’t lost your manners admiral.” The words flowed smoothly as she arranged herself into the chair. A thin folder made its way from her hand to the admiral’s desk. “I trust you’re up to date with the situation?”

The admiral took a few moments to shuffle through the folder’s pages before answering. “Yes, most of it anyway, we’ve assigned someone to assemble a task force and handle the matter when the time comes.” He closed the folder and pushed it back towards Letis.

“Good, there are some concerns that their status and modus operandi might work against Aristeides’s position. I understand the Elektor needs support, but such actions might work against him, and by association, against us.” She was obviously talking about the Empress’s view of the situation, but the admiral kept quiet on the issue. “No, no need to worry. It will take some time for any of their forces to reach the region. By that time we’ll have more ships in the area and if we maintain the pace, we’ll be quite close to solving this affair once and for all.”

The woman nodded, picked up her folder and prepared to leave. “Admiral, the Empress doesn’t want to give the impression that Atrea’s poking its nose more than its needed in Elektor Aristeides’s business, but piracy will not be tolerated.” “Understood. The Navy will just do her job, but we can only do so much without…” “Don’t worry. I’m heading towards Prevania on the next flight. Some things are better done in person.” “I see.”

Prevanian Territorial Waters
West of Prevania

The three carrier strike groups sent by the HCSK Navy to the coast of Prevania had arrived and grouped several hundred kilometers south of the advancing Atrean fleet and west of the Fegosian blockade perimeter. With the Marine compliment now moving forward with destroyers and frigates, GA-101s were taking to the skies above with strike loadouts in preparation for support. A path through the vast minefields guarding the coasts were provided along with the other PCF naval intelligence - afterall, HCSK Navy ships hitting their mines would do no party, save the Prevanian Army and KMKI, any good.

However, Rear Admiral Lukács Horváth still held onto a glimmer of optimism that the force wouldn't be necessary, fueled by the successes on Delta by the Atreans. Hopefully the declarations of allegiance to Elektor Aristeides or those who skeptically but objectively held to neutrality would be as open to the HCSK forces. Unlike the Fegosian advance on Prevoygrad, he had a different approach now lawfully open to him. The Joint Executive Council of the HCSK and Kingdom of Krommindy had managed to pass a declaration through each nations' legislature declaring Prevania a "failed state". This gave the commanders in the field the discretion of allying themselves with any indigenous faction they deemed necessary to completion of the objectives, freeing them from the shackles of having to ask prior for permission from the civilian leadership.

Admiral Horváth chose to send a single, obviously unarmed, UH-1 marked conspicuously with red crosses on white fields on each major surface. On board was a group true to the aircraft's marks - a HCSK Navy flight surgeon, flight nurse, and two corpsmen. Openly broadcasting internationally recognized medical aircraft IFF and flying into the setting sun, the chances of anyone mistaking the lone aircraft for anything but a medical aircraft protected by international laws was slim to none. The destination: the southern peninsula of the Delta island. The mission: make contact with Prevanian units on the ground of any faction. If they be friendly or neutral, they would casually establish contact for the unit with the fleet. If they be hostile, the contact would be to give them the opportunity to declare any civilian or military hospitals, and a guarantee that they would neither be targeted nor even put under the risk of collateral damage. The helicopter would be both broadcasting and blinking signals that they were searching for contact from anyone willing on the ground.

**************************************************************

Novan Regional Waters
North of Prevania, West of Monavia

With the mass evacuation in Lamoni concluded, the efforts had shifted from search, rescue, and evacuation to recovery and decontamination. A process that would likely take 20 years, maybe 50 or more. The country would never be the same, and the countries that welcomed refugees would also be changed by the infusion of Lamonian people and culture.

Taskforce: Monavia was no longer needed for the carrier air bridge, and had been ordered to make all haste to Prevanian waters. This would bring in four more HCSK Navy carrier strike groups on the northern coast of Prevania.

Alpha

A familiar tune started to fill the bunker, "All right, who's phone is that?" the sergeant bawled. Diodoros cursed inwardly and came to attention, "I think it's mine, Sergeant." "Well, you know the rules - hand it over: I'll give it back when we get de-activated." Diodoros pulled the phone out of an inside pocket and slowly passed it to the sergeant. As he did so, he glanced at the screen. That was odd; he did not recognise the caller.

As it was, the Alfegan broadcast was seen by few in the coastal area; the combination of military personnel being without mobile phones and civilians being without power meant that only a few of those in the desired area heard the message. However, away from the affected area, it was picked up and seen by many Prevanians, though the television, radio and mobile phone towers were temporarily shut down to prevent the message being seen in its entirety.

However, at the Head Quarters in Prevoygrad, the message was recorded in its entirety. Arkadios looked up at the ceiling, stretching as the clip of the broadcast ended. He doubted that the Alfegan broadcast would have too great an effect - the Army had been commendable in its containment of the broadcast. It was also patently ridiculous, did they really think that he, a Head of State, would surrender himself in such a fashion. Mind you, he would have to make some kind of response.

To: The People's Nation of Alfegos
From: Direktor Arkadios of the Thalassocratic Oligarchy of Prevania
Encryption: [OPEN LETTER]

Dear Sirs and Madams,

I note with great worry your intrusive broadcast into Prevania. It was most disruptive, in some places cutting across a public safety broadcast. I call upon you not to repeat this. Furthermore, I question your motives behind the attacks on the power stations. It is you who are targeting the civilian population, not least the power station operators. I must just hope that you have sense enough not to attack any of our many nuclear power stations.

I am most deeply angered at your message to the military. You are calling them to desert an action that would be treasonous. I would also like to use the letter to inform the world that, due to inclement market conditions, the plans to privatise the government have been put on a indefinite hold, its resumption conditional upon a referendum. As you can see, I am attempting to get the best possible for the people of Prevania, and I highly doubt that a Fegosian Union invasion is in our interests.

As for the nuclear strike, from the moment that the rebels launched their ICBM, we were perfectly justified in retaliating with the entire arsenal, because we did not know what warhead it bore. I would also call into question the description of the FUPF as an 'independent' investigator, given the Fegosian Union's vocal feelings about the situation.

I am not above the law, nor have I ever been. I am merely subject to the full provisions of Prevanian law, which I have followed in spirit and letter. It is my firm belief that the Prevanian people should be free to make up their own minds about my leadership, without your invasion and propaganda. Did you gauge Prevanian public opinion before invading? I think not. I call upon you to let the Prevanians themselves decide what is in their best interests.

Yours faithfully,

Direktor Arkadios of the Thalassocratic Oligarchy of Prevania

There, that might have some effect, though he was not too hopeful on that front. Suddenly, an officer ran into the room, disturbing his train of thought, "Sir, we are receiving worrisome reports from Alpha. The Elektor of Industry has declared that he is attempting to remove you, and has brought in the assistance of the Atreans." He sank back into his chair, "Yes, and?" "Well, Sir, he has made an appeal to the Prevanian Army, calling for them to defect. We have lost contact with large portions of our forces in Alpha. Most of the LDFs are refusing to respond, and the head of the Alphan RRF has openly come out in support of the Elektor. The Atreans are making strong progress." "Do we have any forces left?" "Well, the only forces we can have any confidence in is the KMKI and SRF forces stationed at Neuneubrandenburg." Arkadios' face visibly paled. Hell, what was he meant to do now? "Right, order the local forces under our command to do what they can to stop the Atreans. Then, you'd better start strengthening the fortifications along their axis of attack into Delta. Oh, and get the Department of Fortifications to start preparing Prevoygrad for an attack." He could feel his grip upon Prevania crumbling, but all was not yet lost. As long as he could keep the Atreans on Delta, he could be fairly certain that forces on the other islands would not defect. As for the FU, he just hoped that the Army would be able to hold them on the beaches.

Pfiffenhaven

The rescue team searched the temple in vain. Near the hypocentre of a 10 Megatonne MIRV, those inside had been killed instantly, before the blast had shattered the temple, bringing its ruins down on their charred bodies. The great columns, subjected to massive forces, had failed, their marble sections falling to the ground. However, miraculously, through some quirk of fate, the altar stood virtually unharmed, with the singed bones of a oxen still on top, saved from the blast by the rest of the temple.

As the Alfegans panned around the scene of destruction, they recorded as ruined and shattered landscape. However, it was unlikely that the images would be reaching the outside world any time soon - as soon as the Army had been appraised of their presence, though not wanting to send men there to brave the radiation, they nonetheless decided to start jamming all broadcasts from Pfiffenhaven. This jamming, coupled with the after-effects of the nuclear blasts, should keep the Alfegans incommunicado, they hoped.

Delta

"Excellent! Excellent! Field Marshal, I thank you very much... Well, I am sure that there will be a few posts vacant at the top of the Army after this... Yes, I understand. Don't worry: Lafayette is pretty useless against airships anyway." Demosthenes put his mobile phone back in his pocket, before turning back to the Atrean, "Sorry for that interruption, but the Field Marshal in command of all RRF forces on this island has decided to declare himself neutral. This means that you won't have to contend with the Rapier and long-range SAM systems any longer. You may still have problems with Lafayette and Starstreak, but they are both far less effective against aircraft."

The Atrean advance had gone even quicker than anyone had thought possible. Without the need to assault the Prevanian beaches, which would have been a hugely costly endeavour, they had completely destroyed the Army's plans. With no possibility of pinning the Atreans down on the beaches, the RRF and SRF were not able to be brought to bear swiftly above, a matter that was not helped by the Atrean air supremacy. Those units that did arrive did so fragmented and with their numbers and morale reduced.

With the defection of so many Army personnel, the air defence network began to unravel. First, an LDF guarding an important transformer decided to shut down the power to the network. The generators were soon on line, but the Atreans were able to use the lull to wreck even more havoc. Indeed, the very rapidity of their advance was perhaps their saviour, as much of the AA assets were concentrated near the coast, and reinforcements could not be rushed up quickly enough.

The largest obstacle to the Atrean advance was arguably the Prevanian adeptness with mines. A key part of the Army's arsenal, they were dispensed profligately by Army units in front of the Atrean advance. However, it was this proficiency that was also to work against them, as Prevanians supporting the Elektor joined the Atrean advance and were able to advise them on how to neutralise, remove or avoid the minefields.

The airships proved to be highly useful, greatly enhancing the Atreans' mobility. They were however, still vulnerable to anti-aircraft weaponry, being (after all) just hastily converted aerocargoships. At one point, a whole Atrean regiment was forced to take their first parachute jump as the airship was hit by multiple missiles. Fortunately, the airships were operating at low altitude, so some loss of buoyancy was manageable. Worst hit were the massive engine gondolas of the airships, being both large IR and radar targets. Several of the airships suffered hits to these gondolas, forcing them to drop behind the main force until the engineers could make repairs.

Their arrival at the inner coast would be met with a strong defensive wall, guarding the inner coast line. However, it was not intended to guard from attacks from the rear, and fell swiftly. Despite the inevitable delays caused by jubilant Prevanians, the Atreans were quick to seize a port.

OOC: following geographical confusion, I will post all pertinent information in the first post on the first page.

The SSBP Navy, supplemented by forty-odd privateer ships retrofitted with slight anti-naval, anti-air, and anti-personnel weaponry, edged closer to its target with its cargo of 200,000 mercenaries and 37,600 assorted administrative personnel. In the War Room on the SS Bryn, Dreadnaught 1st Class, the flagship, the SSBP's finest admirals plotted their plan of attack.

"Three-thousand kilometres!", shouted an attendant.

"We don't have exact specs on their navy yet as it is sheltered by the harbor, however we did receive intelligence as to the base itself. I recommend that we first target the harpoon missiles as they will wreak absolute havoc on our navy if we come too close to them. Their range is safely under four-hundred kilometres, however, and the Rapier missiles and SAM sites should be no problem to us since we do not intend to participate heavily in aircraft combat. So what I recommend..."

"The cruise missiles, right?", another commander interrupted.

"Exactly... our Tomahawk cruise missiles can, within reason that is, take out a considerable number of their Harpoon defenses. Or at the very least perhaps disable them temporarily. After we clear them out we can safely send in the privateer ships to confront their navy while we prepare an assault on the base itself. The privateers should act not only as a delay mechanism, granting us time to occupy their navy and capture the fortifications with our superior numbers, but maybe even as a soak-off force before they are destroyed by the enemy's professional navy. After we drop off our troops and the privateer navy has occupied the professional navy, we advance our ships and plant mines in a strategic position then pull back to a range where we can defend those mines from being dismantled by the enemy. Without support from the harbor, their navy will starve to death while our army will have the resources of the land to draw upon. We will have completed our objective and we may go home. Good night."

"Good night, admiral." came the quiet reply from the rest of the officers. On his way out the admiral instructed the deck attendant, "Wake me up at two-thousand kilometres, that's when we'll start firing. Yes I know their range is two thousand five-hundred, but that's just a crap shoot. No, we want under two-thousand kilometres. Good night." The deck attendant nodded curtly and turned back to the controls to relay orders to various ships in the navy.

On that very ship, Jason Mansor was sleeping in the Security Quarters. He was fortunate to not be in one of the cramped transport ships. The next few days would bring about horrors unimaginable to him. But for now, he slept calmly and peacefully.

Meanwhile, in Free Thallia, Joseph Mansor was pondering his situation. He had been awoken late in the evening to be informed that his son was missing. "No...", he replied. "Don't go after him. I assigned him there to see what he would do. He takes after his father, you know. Now I'm going to go to sleep and you should too. Dismissed." The officer saluted in response and quickly left. The two parted ways and eventually found their ways to their separate beds and drifted into unconsciousness.

Delta

The Katonazagian aircraft was incredibly fortunate. Indeed, had it come just 24 hours earlier, it would have been shot down automatically by the automated anti-aircraft defences. However, with the declaration by the Field Marshal in command of all RRF forces on Delta, the long-range SAM and Rapier batteries stood down. However, the RRF was not overly pleased with additional foreign incursions into Delta.

Onesiphoros Arsenion peered up at the helicopter as it came in to land. He held his assault rifle up, his finger on the safety catch. However, from one medical helicopter, they were not expecting any nasty surprises. He glanced over to where a forward air controller was motioning to the helicopter, bring it in safely in the base.

The helicopter bumped onto the ground and the pilot turned the engine off. Onesiphoros nervously looked at his commanding officer, a second lieutenant, as he approached the helicopter. He watched as he waited for the helicopter door to open, before greeting the travellers and asking them their purpose and nationality

------

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Delta, preparations were being made for the arrival of Ambassador Letis. One squadron of Harriers and one of Rafales was flown in to Kryopulia International Aerohaven in order to be able to escort the Ambassador's flight in. The Atreans were informed of a corridor down which they could fly, guaranteed safe from enemy activity and SAMs.

As the Ambassador's plane touched down, Demosthenes watched from the terminal. Nervously adjusting his tie, he reflected that this was the most important person the Atreans had yet sent. He would make efforts to establish a good relationship. Indeed, his advisors had told him that the Ambassador held a great deal of power and influence in Atrea.

Kryopulia

There was a constant hum in the background. Green troops took some time to get used to the noise, but veterans took to it like fish to water. General von Lichtenlade was of the later type, ignoring the hum altogether as he spoke to his command staff. “This stage of the operation is complete. We’ve reached the Western Shores in record time and secured a port to the Inner Sea. Men, I congratulate you for this.” Commendations would fly across divisions, men will receive medals, and the Azar units spearheading the assault would earn new bragging rights.

As far as the commanders were concerned, the situation was rather different. There were still large swats of land on the island to be secured, units to be transported and equipment to be delivered, all under the heavy pressure of time. None knew better what the situation presented itself than the General. “We cannot however allow ourselves rest,” he made a point out of maintaining his rigid posture despite the good news. “We’ve done nothing so far. The Inner Sea is merely an intermediary goal, the true challenge is only now revealing itself.” He motioned towards an adjunct who started distributing folders.

The staff shuffled through the papers. All of them were classified, but with minor exceptions they were familiar with the content. Some betrayed their surprise at the text, whilst others flipped back and forth through the folder. Finally, the general threw his own folder on the table, drawing their attention. “As you can see, the present circumstances call for the enactment of this particular plan. Some minor adjustments have been made in accordance to your suggestions, but the basic outlines remain the same.” “But sir, it would take us days to assemble that kind of lift.” “We can’t afford the delay, the numbers are too great.” “No, we’ll have what we need. And more.”

The general’s words silenced the gathering. At this point, a captain moved at the centre of the gathering. “I’m sure you all know Captain Albricht, from logistics,” the general ended the silence. The officers acknowledged the new arrival with a nod. The captain smiled at the recognition, pushed his round glasses further up his nose and started talking. “As the general was mentioning earlier, we have the means available to continue our push across the Inner Sea. Based on data collected by us and that provided by the Elektor’s faction, there are multiple fleets in the inner sea, most having been moved there to avoid damage in the ongoing fighting. It is those fleets, and the airship armada that will provide us the lift we need. “ The man moved back in the background as the general returned to his place.

“Gentlemen, as you can see, we can move the troops. I’m sure our Prevanian friend can tell us more of this arrangement once this meeting is over,” he motioned at Aristeides’s liaison. “For now, I want the 34th ready. They’ll be the lucky ones this time around and open the breach.” Another man moved next to the general, the commander of the 34th. “Thank you sir,” he said to the general’s introduction.

“The plan is simple. We’re going to take advantage of the large cargo capacity of the airship and simulate landings in several different locations. This will create the illusion of a large scale assault across the Eastern Shores of Alfa, therefore Arkadios’s forces there won’t be able to focus on any one given point without significant risk. Obviously, significant AA assets will be engaged against the airships, but the air force assures me that once identified, the AA sites can be neutralized. In the confusion, the 34th will launch the actual assault and open a path. We’ll use the ‘floaties’ to make a way through the minefields and enable further reinforcements to land. If all goes well, we will have our next meeting on Alfa.”

Delta.

The airship were quiet. For troops used to the engines of a cargo plane, the holds of the great helium craft were quiet as a tomb. Captain Theseus had no time to contemplate this situation as he was forced to run an impromptu class of Prevanian aboard one of the airships. As one of the fluent speakers of Prevanian, he and his unit had been commissioned by Colonel Via for ‘escort duty’, in fact nothing more than over glorified translation work.

The vessel was still above the Delta mainland when the colonel called him in for a meeting. “Captain, we’ve got not time for learning more than a few sentences. There are a few that can talk Prevanian, but none are as fluent as you are. You’ll have to insure that there are no misunderstandings. Given your other unique qualifications, I also want you to make sure that the religious aspects are satisfied as well. Now go, you’ve got work to do.”

Observation, and simple interaction were enough to show that the colonel was expecting each and every order to be fulfilled without any compromise. She was like a storm, always on the move, never stopping to take in the opinions of her aids. One moment you found her checking the inventory, the other she was complaining or perhaps better said rebutting someone in regards to who knows what issue. The soldiers were used to exigent commanders, but even they had to agree Via was beyond the norm. For any complaint from them, the woman had a simple answer. “You shoot bullets. We take them out.”

The airships would head towards the areas that needed relief most. At the colonel’s insistence, the crews of the airships were pushing the vessels to their utmost limits. The hospitals had to reach the patients before it was too late for them.

On the ground, the route chosen by the mobile hospitals was watched with great interest by the Army, units preparing the ground for landing if it was deemed important enough for an airship to land and the hospital to deploy.

One unit in particular was waiting for much needed relief. “Are they here yet?” “Not yet, just keep them stable.” “Goddamit! I’m not a miracle worker! Without a proper hospital these men will die!” “I know. We’ve signalled the problem, there’s nothing we can do.” “You could have used less force…” “Yes, and allow them to pepper us with bullets.” “It would have been less work.” “Yes, and half my squad would be gone at it. We lost good men as it is.”

The treatment of POWs proved to be a major issue in the Atrean advance. Whilst the Atreans had a flexible, active structure to rely upon for treatment of their injured, the Prevanians were left to hang in this area once their units disintegrated.

Military Hospitals and local civilian institutions soaked up as many of the Prevanian injured POWs as they could, but the advance left them stretched thin, unable to cater to all the patients, mainly due to mobility issues. How could you take an injured man to a bed when you have no vehicle to do so? It was a paradox despite the light casualties of the advance. Doctors could only hope for a miracle, otherwise many would die before their time. The cold truth was that those lives were expendable. What was a life when hundreds more would be saved if the conflict ended one day earlier? Faced with this issue, Colonel Via’s solution was the simplest one. Don’t take the patient to a hospital, take the hospital to the patient.

There were preparations made for the Ambassador’s arrival. Both Prevanians and the local representatives of Atrea there insisted on that. She was the Empress’s right hand; the Ambassador of the Imperial Will, decorum had to be maintained!

The flight had been a smooth ride, the adapted military cargo plane doing its job with honour under the careful ministration of its pilots. The pilots became aware of their passenger only at the last moment, the Ambassador electing to keep her means of transportation a secret. Once the aircraft stopped on the tarmac, they were able to breathe after a full day of tension. Few could claim in this war to have had a mission as difficult as this one.

Two Azar exited the plane before the Ambassador. She followed them at a small distance. She was dressed functionally, yet elegantly. There was a salute towards the waiting troops, a small wave for the Prevanians and a smile for all.

Finally, she was greeted by Hieronymos. She smiled at the man and waited for all the traditional greetings before finally talking. “So, I hear you were the first of the Prevanians to come in contact with Atrean soldiers?” She had a meeting with Eristeides, but there was no harm in getting up to speed until then.

Delta, Prevania
A RRF base on the southern peninsula

The man who stepped off the Huey was an officer, a lieutenant commander as indicated by the brown leaf-like rank on his flight helmet. The wings, shield, and serpent on his vest further specified his status as a flight surgeon. After he was out from under the decelerating rotors, he spoke to the junior officer who had come to challenge. "Lieutenant Commander Kovács, HCSK Medical and Chaplain Corps. I'm one of the flight surgeons from the HCSK Navy fleet parked out there," he said, pointing back the way they came. "We're here to see if there's any humanitarian situations we need to be aware of. Incase more fighting breaks out, we also need to know where the civilian hospitals are to make sure they're protected. Known military treatment areas of all factions would also be helpful."

Changing the subject, he continued. "The Marines will be coming in the not-too-distant future. With different forces acting within the Prevanian Army, the situation on the ground is going to be... complex. The only way to tell the friendlies and neutrals from the hostiles is going to be if they're shooting at us, so you can expect that the Marines won't come in with all guns blazing. But they and their naval support will most definitely return fire if fired upon. Rear Admiral Horváth spoke highly of your Field Marshal and his wise objectivity in spite of circumstances. He made it very clear that our mission here is to help Prevania become stable again so it can begin healing, and that it can't begin until the other factions on the ground follow your Field Marshal's example. As such, factions that refuse to face that reality will have to be fought down until they become willing. The Delta RRF's neutrality is the key, example, and framework for factional cease-fires across Prevania, allowing the international community to form a buffer. Then the people of Prevania can rebuild the government in peace and without fear of politically motivated violence."

"I know you're a junior officer just beginning on your journey up the chain of command, but you're an officer none-the-less, and I trust you can relay what we discussed here. While we're here, do your men have any medical needs that aren't being met?"

Great Tear Ocean
Salzland Territorial Waters

The airships sailed smoothly away from the Salzland coast, the ribbon of land behind them shrinking and thinning with every moment. Soon, they would be out of their air controllers' area and likely wouldn't have contact again until they reached the Prevanian theater. Neither the troops nor the Palmland mercenaries knew the exact final destination. What the division's S2 did know was that HCSK Navy CSGs 1, 10, and 13 were converging on the southern peninsula of the Delta island, and the Krommindy Royal Navy fleet had entered the theater and was moving in to link up with them. The only other possibility would be Gamma island, for which the Palmland airships would have to blast their way in, and there were no known friendly or neutral factions there at that time. The Prevanian Army had consolidated their hold on Gamma fairly quickly and easily, and it didn't seem of much strategic importance at least at face value, but that was yet to be seen. The only thing to do was to wait and enjoy the ride.

After a long pause, the Prevanian liaison officer stood up, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been instructed to lay the resources of the Guild in their entirety at your disposal. As you may be aware, the Guild maintains a large number of mothballed airships for the Air Fleet. In total, there are about 30 obsolete airships that will be used in the decoy attacks. None of them are more recent than 20 years, but we have ensured that the engines and autopilots are functioning. Due to their age, the weaponry and countermeasures will probably not be overly effective against the enemy defences. However, fear not: due to the inherent danger, none of these airships will be manned. Also, none are of special historic value, so we do not really mind either way whether they come back or not." He smiled, "To tell you the truth, they contain so many dangerous materials that scrapping them would be prohibitively expensive. You, on the other hand, will be travelling in the same airships that have brought you thus far. I believe that the Guild has a team of engineers on hand to fix any damage and to ameliorate the weaponry and armour, but we are severely time limited. I will now hand over to my Army colleague."

Major General Leontius Sophon slowly got to his feet; a portly individual, he was not entirely happy with his role, "Sirs, I have been given plenipotentiary powers by the Field Marshal. Should you need to requisition any shipping, airshipping or equipment, I have been ordered to perform the actual operation for legal reasons."

Southern Delta

Onesiphoros watched as Second Lieutenant Ampelios looked blankly at the foreigners, a look of mild panic passing across his face. He pitied his commanding officer: with his normal job a supermarket manager, he had never felt the need for any language other than his native Prevanian Greek. Onesiphoros decided to step forwards and save him some embarrassment. Marching up, he saluted, "Sir, I believe that I can understand them: they appear to be speaking a weird dialect of English." "Ach, the barbarians! Very well, you can translate for me." Onesiphoros thought for a moment before asking the lieutenant commander, "I have been appointed as a translator. Would you mind repeating all that?" When he had done so and this had been laboriously and haltingly translated, he responded, "No, we have no need of medical help. I will send your message to the General, but I will tell you that we will shoot any Katonazagian forces that attempt to intervene, if they are not allowed by the Marshal. I cannot give you anything further at this time, but I suggest that you watch the Department of Healthy internet site - you will find the non-military hospital's whereabouts there."

Lt. Cmdr. Kovács nodded. "Very well, then. I hope we meet again under favorable circumstances. We're out there if you need us." He turned back to the Huey and pointed his finger into the air, giving a whirling motion, and returned to the aircraft. The twin 1900 horsepower engines spun up the four bearingless and hingeless blades with ease, and they medics left the way they had come.

Once away from the coast, he contacted the command room on the CSS Biztonsági via a secure satellite phone. Specifically, he dialed in Commander Mihály's number.

"Commander Mihály, here."

"This is Dr. Kovács. The RRF Marshal's offer of neutrality apparently doesn't extend to us. They are at least civil, though, and seem to abide by the general rules of warfare. If you've got a 'Plan B' for the Admiral, now might be a good time to broach the subject. If he plans to land here still, either he's going to have to coordinate with the Marshal over Delta RRF, or the Marines are going to have a fight on their hands."

"Thanks, Doc. Mihály, out."

Novan Regional Waters
North of Prevania

Taskforce: Monavia continued to sail toward the northern shores of Prevania, and in a matter of hours would be coming upon the rear echelons of the PCF/FU blockade in the area. As of yet, no further orders had been given, only to link up.

However, change was in the air back at the War Department. The nature of the HCSKN and KRN missions were about to change with it.

Prevanian Waters
600 km East of the southern peninsula of Delta

The Krommindy Royal Navy fleet had finally come close enough the HCSK Navy fleet to consider them "linked up", although just under 200 km still separated them. The difference was, the HCSK Navy fleet was stopped, and the KRN fleet wasn't. They were still moving forward with all the haste a fleet can gather, considering one can only go as fast as it's slowest ship.

Onboard the HMS Czar Steven III, Scott, the Duke of Spencerland was in his quarters pouring over maps and intelligence. Earlier in life, he had distinguished himself as a Royal Marine officer in his own right, albeit the opportunity for the success was undoubtedly due to the fact that he was the Czarina's nephew. Much was being left unsaid in the royal court these days. Although none dare voice it, neither the crown prince and princess (twins) were considered viable options for succession. Prince Daniel was a socialite, and nobody could name a single royal function (parties aside) that he had legitimately tried his hand at. Princess Allison was vocally against being royalty at all, and some speculated that she was perhaps ideologically a Labor Party socialist. This let the options down to the next tier of succession, being Scott and his other cousin, Christopher, the Duke of Geer. Scott clearly had the support of the military and many of the noble families, while Christopher had much support among the non-Labor Party commoners and the Church of Krommindy, and was seen even by those who disagreed with him as a pious and morally upright man.

But for now, Scott's focus was on the mission. He'd been appointed by the Joint Executive Council as the theater commander for HCSK and Kingdom of Krommindy forces, and did not take his duties lightly. Based on reports of the Atrean offensive to take Delta island, Fegosian forces drive at the capital on Alpha, and intelligence on the situations and Prevanian Army forces stationed on Beta and Gamma, a new and bigger picture came to light. The Atreans and Fegosians could be unwittingly driving into a trap, should Prevanian Army reinforcements arrive to bolster the existing forces on Delta and Alpha. The possibility of a mutiny on the RRF Marshal on Delta couldn't be discounted. No, the islands needed to be individually isolated, and that was that. He immediately went to work drafting the plan and sent it out, with orders to begin movement immediately. Copies of what they were going to do were sent to the Fegosian Union forces and the PCF, as to garner cooperation or at least non-interference.

[OOC: I'll put together the details of the plan later, but for OOC knowledge, the HCSK Navy portion of Taskforce: Prevania is going to take and hold the channel between Gamma and Delta, while the KRN portion and detachments from the Palmland airship-embarked 4th Armor drives straight through and steams toward Pollonia. Taskforce: Monavia will set a distraction invasion of Chiosanas while the real invasion of it comes from behind from the rest of the Palmland/4th Armor. Fegosian support at Pollonia and Chiosanas would be greatly appreciated.]
