My mother once told me her great-uncles from her mother's side were Caucasian in origin -- blond, blue-eyed. She doesn't know what nationality, though. And I can't quite believe her myself -- she's aged well, and most of us Pinoys are of mestizo origin, but eh.

It's all ancient history, but thanks to a massive volume of family paperwork my parents discovered in 2006 I know exactly where everybody came from and how:

I am fortunate in that my paternal grandmother and one of her sisters-in-law compiled a very extensive history of our ancestral line back in the '70s. We rescued their findings from deep storage a few years ago. My father's side had Dutch and Danish blood. Going even further back my grandmother discovered most were Vikings off a dorpie somewhere in the Halligen. The exact island was supposedly destroyed due to erosion.

The first ancestor of our extended family to live in Africa (not sure about the exact relation) was a Swiss named Mohler. According to my own research he originated from Diegten, Basel Canton - this oke was baptised in the local Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirch. Based on the surname alone, at various times the Mohlers intermarried with Romands or possibly Huguenot immigrants. They remained thoroughly Alemannic, though: later descendants in the Cape of Good Hope still signed their names in the German language. My grandmother claimed Mohler married a Dutchwoman in 1761. Her tale is just as interesting. I did a simple search on Google and learned that she was actually a Frisian from Schleswig. Her father was a commissioner for the Dutch East India Company which commonly recruited servants and soldiers from Nordfriesland. This couple entered into a pledge with the VOC that he would live in Souff Effrika for at least four years (1669-1673) as a colonist in exchange for free burgher status.

Needless to say, it's irrelevant in the modern context - but interesting from a historian's point of view nevertheless.

British: English and Scottish, on the Scottish side I can point to a couple of clans I'm likely descended from and one I could probably register with if I wanted, and there's clear cockney roots on the English side. There's supposedly French and Indian in the family a fair few generations back, but no proof except some mid-tone white skin (as opposed to my milky white, blind you if the sun's out, get sunburnt immediately skin. rotters - i'd like to save on sun lotion too!)

Being British, I can look at family traits and guess at the ancient ancestry: there's a lot of blonde hair and blue eyes on my dad's side, suggesting germanic/northern Europe, and a couple of relatives with quite black hair and very green eyes, so celtic too. There's jewish noses too, and I'm not even kidding or exaggerating, I've had family members assaulted by known anti-semites.

I'm surprised. In these threads, there's almost always some mid-teens kid claiming multiple Royal ancestries and how they're distantly in line to some <insert abolished German/Eastern European> throne.

I do find genealogy fascinating. Good to see where everyone originates from. Well, to me, anyway.

Most of the ones on my father's side were from Silesia. Whether that makes them German, Prussian, Polish or Bohemian mostly depends on how far back you go (my records only go back to the 19th century). My mother's side seems to be scattered all over Germany, but they might have lived in/near Berlin before the war.
