Siege weapons are horrible against archery. You're right. However, bombers have longer range, so if they are behind a wall and attacking the Mangudai, there is some chance the latter will not be able to counterattack.

Bombard cannons have sufficient range, but are inaccurate and have a long minimum range. Mangudai are still fast, so they'd penetrate that minimum range.

Oh yeah, also, am I the one who finds villagers to be most effective against battering rams?

Perhaps, AI is different, but I can just get a new AI 2.0 for The Conquerors.
There's new civilizations: Italians, Indians, Incas, Magyars, and Slavs, plus new maps and AI that are though as hell.
