It would have the barrel length and the furniture of an SMG, so the same performance as an SMG I guess. I'm just curious as to why I should have a whole new SMG when I could more easily convert an existing handgun.

If you are converting a handgun into full auto, adding a stock and lengthening the barrel it sounds like you've just designed a new SMG. I don't think you would save much on development and other costs.

I figure it would have less recoil and muzzle flash and stuff. And like just imagine how many .357's I could fit inside a standard magazine!

They are still in use by irregular units as such I presume they should work fine for government backed paramilitary forces operating in the city.

Better use of automatic fire in the thought process of the era.

I was talking about WW1 mostly.

All the major nations of the era issued their standard arms to LTs. and NCOs. Sometimes they ALSO had Pistols but there was almost always a rifle.

Actually british officers weren't issued rifles until the SLR came along and even then they were only permitted to have one if they scored particulalry well on it duirng qualification and did less well with the sterling.

Of coruse even in ww1 when officers only got a pistol they were still trained in rifle drill and expected to qualify with the rifle so that they would be in a position to help instruct and drill thier troops.

Whislt not issued with a rifle it wasn't unknown for an officer to pick one up or bring something from home given the much greater lattitude officers had in terms of gear since they were allowed to equip themselves if so desired.

Moving into ww2 it became more common for officers to tote SMGs (and eventually M1 carbines) around but this was mainly a thing in more specialist front line units like paras, commandaos and the varied special children of the 8th army.

depends how long overall it ends up being and how easy it is to carbine without having to do major things to it to make it run right with a short barrel.

srsly tho- If you're committed to your identity crisis of a tanker pistol, the SR-3 has you covered.

You won't have any of you do it enough, there's plenty of rimmed caliber AKs.

There's just no advantage to it

762x54mmR and 12 gauge are the ones that immediately come to mind.
