My point is, why not have an extra period when I could be learning trigonometry instead? A subject which I'm sure everyone agrees is more important than learning about organelles.

I run an NS nation called Quelsh, which resides in the region of Australialia. A real shocker, I know.

Maybe when it gets to physics, I would accept such an extension. But everything up to that is unmathematical memorization of facts.
And Chemistry and many other feilds of Science, Science and Math could be considered one in the same.

I can assure you that society isn't going to die off if I'm not forced to take dedicate an extra period out of my schedule to memorizing the names of cell layers.
Let's let the people who wan't to do science learn it, but everyone benefits from developing actual thinking skills so just force them to learn trigonometry instead of useless stuff.

So I don't know about you, but where I am, in my school system, we are required to take an extra period of science in stead of gym in our block schedule(which I really don't miss either but that's not the point). What is the point of this? Really, do they think we'll produce more gdp if we know how to tell igneous rocks from sedimentary rocks? I really hate it, instead of having us have an extra period of trigonometry they have us memorize dumb stuff that will never be useful.
So I end with this question, is this extra attention given to high school science justified somehow? My view (as you can probably tell by now) is that there is no way to justify this. Not only is the way in which the subject taught, unprovoking of actual thought. But I read somewhere that industries related more towards physical sciences actually don't aid gdp growth in post industrial economies so much, service sector economies require lawyers and computer engineers, not marine biologists.

How is learning about life "useless stuff"?
