Well, IRL most Amish are fluent in both Pennsylvania German and English and confine the latter to in-group settings. It's still disturbing to use archaic English to imply "Amish".

They have an accent, speak PA German to their kids, and modern English to customers; it's never some old-fashioned archaic formal English

Well, the problem is that we don't know either way. And for those that would be disturbed (and even under your limitations) it is no consolation not to know.

I think it's far more likely that the Pies and Apples are only distantly related, almost to a point where most people would say they aren't related. It's really unusual to find that you have a new first cousin out of the blue.

It doesn't matter how closely they're related. The point is that the episode continuously and intentionally mentioned it. They wanted us to draw the connection. Unless that was just a case of very unfortunate implications, but I'm fairly certain that Mookie isn't part of the writing team. So, I doubt they were that blindly stupid about the whole thing.

Well yeah, Equestria doesn't have Germany or Pennsylvania or Christianity. They're not going to be literal Mennonites or Amish.

The references (close-knit, extremely traditional, archaic speech patterns, old-fashioned clothes and puritanical outlook) are still pretty close.

I found it strange that the stereotypical Amish would speak archaic English, when in fact they have their own dialect of German, Pennsylvania German.

Second cousins thrice removed, or something like that, and they may or may not be related. But, being related won't stop any shippers.

Fourth cousins twice removed I decided to look it up.

If someone is your fourth cousin, twice removed, then I think it's OK to date and/or fuck them, considering that you are only 1/4096 related.

One thing I'm still fuzzy on as an ESL speaker: When Igneous says "surely thy name is not but Granny Smith", is he greeting her ("surely you're none other than Granny Smith") or surprised at her name ("surely you're not just called Granny Smith")?

I thought it was the first. The second just seems off with the context and way he said it.
I enjoy role-playing and ponies. I'm also descended from French kings, English kings, and Vikings. Can't speak anything other than English though.
