Rugby Union World Cup 24 – EVERYTHING (else) thread

Postby Aels » Tue Oct 20, 2015 1:06 pm

Welcome to the XXIV Rugby Union World Cup, held in Aels.

Aels is a rapidly developing country that has been off the international sporting stage for a number of years, while maintaining a good local sporting heritage despite national leagues having been wound up. With a renewed push for sport to return to professionalism, Aels is ready to welcome international visitors once again.

The Rushmori country is split into two slivers of land separated by the Bay of Celts, with three islands in the Bay itself. There are good maritime, aviation and railway links between major cities in each area of Aels.

The following 40 teams, including the hosts, are confirmed to be taking part in the tournament:
Pot 1
Ko-oren (2)
The Fair Republic (3)
Neu Engollon (4)
Hutanjia (5)
Uitbregen (7)
Abanhfleft (9)
Saintland (10)
Aels (Hosts)

Pot 2
Nova Anglicana (11)
Ekoz (22)
Polaaskan (25)
The Sword Bloke (27)
Borxinoia (27)
Cata Larga (34)
Kaboomlandia (38)
Kernansquillec (42)

Pot 3
Aquitayne (58)
Pey (82)
United States of Devonta (90)
Gregoryisgodistan (90)
Barunia (UR)

Unranked pot

Lymantatia (UR)
Ethane (UR)

Burthnas (UR)
Eura (UR)
Aloquirbe (UR)
Albaie (UR)
Racao (UR)
South Donese Union (UR)
Greater Vakolicci Haven (UR)
Oisinistan (UR)

This is where all RPs, squad lists (preliminary or otherwise) and scores will go. When writing match RPs, you may choose to refer to the officials thread to select your match officials.

As per the host bid, all teams may include a style modifier between -3 and +3 to denote a defensive/attacking style of rugby. When posting squads, you may also wish to include RP permissions:
Should my opponent RPs first, he/she may do the following:
Godmod scoring events: Y/N
RP injuries to my players: Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players: Y/N
Sin bin my players: Y/N
Send my players off: Y/N
Godmod other events: Y/N

Please note that I have removed a regular line from the permissions: 'choose my scorers' as t's a bit pointless forbidding your opponent to choose your scorers. If you have preferred scorers then make them known, but don't forbid your opponents from choosing them.

Pool A

There are 40 teams in 8 pools of 5, with the top two per pool qualifying for the knockout stages. Four points will be awarded for a win, two for a draw and none for a defeat – with bonus points for (a) scoring 31+ points or (b) losing by 7 points or fewer. If there is a tie in the pool standings on points, the tiebreakers will be as follows: Head-to-head results, points difference, bonus points.

Stadia
Arena Llanislwyn, Llanislwyn, capacity 16,744. Located on the smallest of Aels' three islands in the Bay of Celts, the Arena Llanislwyn is home to the Firestone who play in the second-tier Division One.
Pool A MD1, Pool B MD2, Pool C MD3, Pool D MD4

Trechoid Park, Trechoid (Tricoed), capacity 18,260. Located on northern Aels' western border, home to the Eagles of the ARU Division One who used to play down the road in Treuddyn but have moved to the larger stadium.
Pool E MD1, Pool F MD2, Pool G MD3, Pool H MD4

National Rugby Stadium, Watersedge, capacity 27,000. Expanded rapidly in recent years to double as a multi-purpose arena, it was originally built as an 8,000 all-seater arena.
Pool A MD2, Pool B MD3, Pool C MD4, Pool D MD5

Cae Clwb Rygbi Drefhil, Drayfill (Drefhil), capacity 21,000. The largest rugby stadium in northern Aels and situated just outside the country's bustling capital, it's home to the Bulls who play in the top-flight Championship. The ground's name is a nod to the Bulls' traditional club name, Drayfill RFC.
Pool E MD2, Pool F MD3, Pool G MD4, Pool H MD5

Stadiwm Glen, Amman Glen, capacity 23,710. Home to Championship side Glen Rugby, it is the largest club ground in the country.
Pool A MD3, Pool B MD4, Pool C MD5, Pool D MD1

Condors Ground, Aberwood, capacity 17,000. The newest rugby-specific stadium in the country, built by Championship club Condors.
Pool E MD3, Pool F MD4, Pool G MD5, Pool H MD1

New Free Stone Stadium, Drayfill (Drefhil), capacity 39,000. The largest stadium used in the bid, it is the national stadium of Aels and replaced the (old) Free Stone, which is also included in the bid. Was used as the main stadium during the first Rushmori Games. Has an athletics track, so spectators are slightly further away from the action.
Pool A MD4, Pool B MD5, Pool C MD1, Pool D MD2

Free Stone Stadium, Drayfill (Drefhil), capacity 23,500. Now used mostly for club football, a new pitch will be laid for the World Cup to ensure perfect grass conditions for rugby.
Pool E MD4, Pool F MD5, Pool G MD1, Pool H MD2

Stadiwm y Mileniwm Penfro, Pembroke (Penfro), capacity 21,000. New home of three-times football champions CCPD Penfro and part of the unsuccessful football World Cup bid between Ossidiacqua and Aels.
Pool A MD5, Pool B MD1, Pool C MD2, Pool D MD3

Stadiwm Pentref (Clockwork Garages Arena), Pentref-ar-y-Bae, capacity 20,800. Re-named for the World Cup bid due to sponsorship issues, the Clockwork Garages Arena is home to five-times champions Pentref.
Pool E MD5, Pool F MD1, Pool G MD2, Pool H MD3

Scorination will take place every other day.

Kaboomlandia Phoenix National Rugby Union Team

Nickname: The Phoenix
Head Coach: Marshall Hayes
Style mod: +1.8
Trigramme: KBM

Roster:
#1 L. Prop: Jamie Fischer
#2 Hooker: Phil Slats
#3 T. Prop: Albert Reeves
#4 Lock: Brandon Villegas
#5 Lock: Reilly Sherman
#6 Flanker: David Dorsett
#7 Flanker: Randy Panarin
#8 Number Eight: Ross Panarin

#9 Scrum Half: Larry Dale
#10 Fly Half: Jamie Pierce
#11 Left Wing: Mitchell Fisher
#12 Inside Centre: Jacob Keller
#13 Outside Centre: Drew McMaster
#14 Right Wing: Jüssi Brylîn (Kaboomlandian Foreign Territory)
#15 Fullback: Darren Hayden

Bench:
#16 Prop: Andrew Picard
#17 Hooker/Prop: Will Simpson
#18 Lock: Jamie McSalem
#19 Flanker: Nick McLean
#20 Half: Brett Kourmor
#21 Half: Stewart Picard
#22 Centre: Reggie Clarkson
#23 Wing/Fullback: Ryan Blake

Summary:
The Phoenix (then named the Kings) were below-average in RUWC, finishing with two wins and three losses and only advancing on a tiebreaker. Even though they were the 24th seed, they nearly surprised the heavily-favoured Nova Anglicana Lions, eventually falling 23-16 on a final-minute try. Rookie right wing Jüssi Brylîn is the first-ever player from the Kaboomlandian Foreign Territory to play for a Kaboomlandian team after a landmark court decision last week permitted Territorian players to play for the much more skilled Kaboomlandian teams.

The Phoenix also got a godsend of a group, with four other unranked teams, though they are in a group with host Aels.

In=character, Kaboomlandia is a World Assembly member and abides by its resolutions. If this nation isn't in the WA, it's for practical reasons.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (apologies for the retcon). While rugby league has a small but loyal fanbase and rugby sevens is rarely played competitively, it's rugby union that reigns supreme in Elejamie. With the best of the EJ-POWR Rugby Championship's homegrown talent representing the nation, as well as Riley Kroger from the Sevens team being on the subs list, it's safe to say that Elejamie will probably make some waves.

And, indeed, Elejamie is slowly but surely making its way up the international rugby ladder. First, the national rugby league team defied expectations in their inaugural World Cup, losing their first game before cruising through to the quarter finals (even defeating hosts Quebec 19-18) before being losing 10-5 by Ko-oren (who also beat them in that first game 8-0). The Sevens team also performed well at the Londinium 7s, also losing their first game before making it to the plate stage - only being unable to make it to the cup on point difference - where they ended up winning it; however, their run at the Alpen View Beer Festival Sevens was less successful, losing two group stage games before being dumped out at the cup quarter finals by old friend Natanians and Nosts (who won the cup in Londinium but came fourth in Neu Engollon). And now here they are at the 24th Rugby World Cup. Drawn in Pool C with Kaboomlandia (the only ranked side in the pool) and hosts and [IC] rivals Aels, Elejamie are hoping to make it to the quarter finals (at the bare minimum).

  • Ryan Morris, David White, Antonio Cuesta and Jeff Simons don't have numbers. However, if you choose to play them, then give them the number of the guy they replaced. For example, if Ryan Morris replaced Roberto Peralta as a substitute, then Morris would be given the #17 jersey.

Tactycs an RP Ynpho

Shytyslysh Rugby is very much about holding possession, frustrating opponents and impeccable kicking. The team will happily take many phases to move a meagre amount of yards as, as long as they hold the ball, the opponent physically cannot score. In lesser disciplined opponents, this can take its toll and provoke penalties which will be invariably kicked so as to (more often than not) gain possession after the restart and begin the cycle again. Naturally the team will push for tries but in the event of a stalemate, the Shytyslysh will take a drop goal. Shytyslysh kickers are amongst the best in the Multiverse which is likely due to practicing in the awful weather conditions at home.
Style Mod = -3
RP Permissions = I allow you the same permissions you allow others although no deaths please (... but slightly negotiable in the event of a good RP idea, TG first.)

Due to the Shytyslysh manner of play, can anyone allocating my scorers for a match please include the greatest amount of successful kicks possible. Should the score require the use of an unconverted try (e.g. 5 or 8 points) please feel free to godmod the most ridiculous reason for a missed kick. We don't miss kicks.
Phullbacc (Full Back) Marbhyn Coccrobyn is the designated kicker of the squad although Peyton Boggtrotter, Rupert Blacc and Seemor Peetman are also kickers of a exceptionally high standard.

As such, I kindly ask the host that we never receive a try-scoring bonus point regardless how many we may score in a match.

Kernansquillecan squad

Intro:
Rugby's kind of a popular sport in Kernansquillec but sort of lacks a national structure of any kind. As such the national team is put together pretty much at random the few times they decide to go to the World Cup. They somehow manage to win on their début appearance back in the 17th edition. Something similar happening would be a miracle, but they might just get out of their group being ranked as the second seeds, 42nd overall. Feel free to do pretty much whatever you want with the team because anything could happen.

As a new nation to Rugby, having only designated it a national sport 2 years ago, Ethane will be hoping to progress far in this world cup to really bring the spirit of rugby alive in Ethane, and really secure its support as a major support to keep its government funding. The Ethane Rugby Union will be hoping that a successful first rugby world cup campaign will encourage more young people to participate in the sport, developing Ethane into a great international rugby nation. Note: The international team did exist, and did have players, it just did not join in large rugby competitions.

Summary

Image
Image
New manager Enrie Paliemiere seeks to reform Cata Larga's
national team along offensive lines after the Stallions failed to
show at RUWC 23
Cata Larga's national team made more than just a respectable showing at their first appearance in Rugby Union World Cup 22, with the Stallions advancing go the Round of 24 before losing 10-30 to Jeckland, as well as achieving a "glorious defeat" against rugby powerhouse Uitbregen with Cata Larga losing 15-19. Despite this strong showing, however, Cata Larga failed to show at RUWC 23, and only barely managed to get into the running for the 24th edition.

Naturally, this fact's become somewhat of a national disgrace, especially given how rugby union is the most popular sport in the Commonwealth by far. Battered by the press and the public, then-manager Gustieve Kariasa and his assistant Andrie Kastielle were forced to resign, and was expediently replaced by the URK's choice, Enrie Paliemiere and his assistant Francice de Fierte. Paliemiere, like Kariasa, emphasizes a highly offensive style of play - however, instead of focusing on the forwards, as Kariasa had, Paliemiere instead prefers to emphasize the roles of the backs in the team. Paliemiere's strategy - heavily reliant on swift running and effective passing - has neglected the team's forward ability, though the front lines remain rather capable due to the ability of the players and their training under Kariasa. Defensive play has also suffered, along with kicking ability and aptitude in set pieces, both of which observers have noted could come back to haunt the Stallions.

Cata Larga's large base of players to recruit from has very much helped the national team - all of the players on the team are at least decent, with forwards tending to be weaker according to Paliemiere's strategy. Players like Salvetiere Plaka and Simiene Rieje, however, are very strong. Most of Cata Larga's dangerous men are in the back - especially strong players there include wingers Veneite Spalka and Bruene ian Arberia and inside center Pietre Sidakia, all of whom are exceptional runners and passers. While much old talent remains, quite a few positions have been replaced either by new players or improved subs, some of which are still trying to get a feel for the team. These team cohesion issues could present another problem for the Stallions, especially given how the key winger positions and one position in the front line have been shuffled. In spite of these changes, the team as a whole remains passionate about the game.

Paliemiere is confident about a strong Catalarguense performance, believing that victory will be easy against unraked nations Shytysle and Eura, as well as 90th-ranked Gregoryisgodistan. Cata Larga will face a very tough fight against first seed The Fair Republic, third-ranked in the world. Despite this, Paliemiere aims to at least achieve another "glorious defeat" against them, noting that Uitbregen was also third-ranked when Cata Larga achieved its near-win against them.

However, Cata Larga, remains merely 34th-ranked in the world, an even lower position on the ranking board than what it had post-RUWC 22 when the Stallions were edging on the Top 20. Despite this, Paliemiere is confident that Cata Larga will easily reach the knockout stages of the Cup. Ever the optimist, Paliemiere says he even aims to get the Stallions to the quarterfinals, though whether or not his team can manage it remains to be seen.

Barunian National Rugby 7's Team
"The Waves"

Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, but it is still relatively small. Part of it's growth has been a six-team National Rugby Union Championship, as well as a ten-team 7s league. The all-male NRUC has been dominated by one team, the South Havenia Bucks, and many Bucks players find themselves called up for the 24-man squad. 5 of the 6 teams are represented here, representing the two states on Barunia's largest island, Barunia Island. The team from Marion State, the Vikings, miss out on representation, which is somewhat understandable having managed only a single win last season.

# Name Position Club

On the style of play:

-Our attacking system is firstly based on drop goals,so in a game we score 15 points it's more likely to be 5 drop goals, than 3 tries without conversions.

... Drowzynesses, co'ordynaeshn losses or weecnesess yn t'mussuls maybee corzed by thys product. Tha shud contact thy'doctor yph ...

Ceeth stopped reading the instructions and knocked back two tablets of diazepam. Tomorrow was the big day. Circled multiple times upon the calendar. One week until the start of the Rugby World Cup. The reason this date was of greater priority than Shytysle's opening match against Yoera (Eura) was that tomorrow the team departed for Aels. The hotel was booked, training facilities arranged, squad finalised. All that was left to be done was the small matter of getting there except for Ceeth, it was no small matter. It involved a plane journey and that sent a whole gamut of anxieties racing through his veins. He'd never flown before; Shytysle had but one modestly-sized airport on the outskirts of the capital and that was seemingly seldom used. Shytysle had more-or-less given up hope of ever having a tourist industry except for the occasional storm-chasers. 9 months of the year it rained in varying degrees from tempestuous torrents to depressing drizzle and the other 3 months it was either hailstorms, blizzards or an angry sleet. The natives scarcely ever noticed the rain and Ceeth was no exception. Great drops of water thudded against the outside of his windows but his mind was firmly fixed upon a scenario involving a great fireball of aeronautic wreckage hurtling into the sea.

Sharply he slapped his cheeks in the vain hope that a little pain distract him until the drugs took effect but it did not. He sat before his desk which was fully covered in a whole collection of papers, cuttings and scribblings relating to every facet of rugby imaginable. More details pertaining to his squad than were required for a national census, detailed strategems for line-outs including any number of potential recipients and annotated notes on hundreds of previous rugby world cup matches. Ceeth's eyes fell upon the schedule for the groups which he'd written out a few nights earlier.
1 - vs. Yoera (Eura) at Trechoid Park
2 - vs. Greggorry'ysgodystan (Gregoryisgodistan) at Cae Clwb Rygbi Drefhil
3 - vs. Th'phaer Republic (The Fair Republic) at Free Stone Stadium (Phree Stoen Staedyum?)
4 - vs. Catta Larga (Cata Larga) at Stadium Stadiwm Pentref

byeday bytween matches 2 & 3

In his opinion, the schedule didn't work in Shytysle's favour. Ceeth would have much preferred to get the 'big' games of The Fair Republic and Cata Larga out of the way first but such was sport and he'd already come up with a few possible gameplans to maximise their results. Regardless of this, qualification to the knock-outs would still require opening the campaign with two victories and he'd heard horror stories about the Gregoryisgodistanis as well as some none-too-kind words about the Eurans also. Both games were likely to be physical affairs, which played somewhat into Shytyslysh hands but did he really have the strength in depth to be able to maintain his best fifteen for the end of the group stage? What if they did progress? They couldn't expect to succeed in a battle of attrition against the top rugby teams in the Multiverse. What was plan B? Was there even a plan B?

As he once again felt panic rush over him, he swallowed another tablet despite the explicit warning from his doctor not to exceed dosage limits. He wondered what his psychiatrist would say, that is, if he still had one. Some weeks before she had suggested that maybe this trip was a bad decision for many more reasons than just his fear of flying and that remaining in Shytysle would be best for his mental health. His response was to submit her to a tsunami of verbal abuse before storming out and he still hadn't got around to apologising for it. Threatening to disembowel her husband in front of her was possibly a little overboard in hindsight.

His phone beeped with an alarm he had set earlier. 'Goe t'bed!' was lit up on the screen below the time; the message he knew earlier he'd have to send to himself. It was 23:00 and the plane would depart for Aels in precisely six hours and twenty five minutes.

It was as he was on the verge of following his own advice that he realised he was yet to pack a suitcase.

Translated Transcript - 18:00 Cata deǐ Aureǐ Standard Time, October 22, 2015 CE Broadcast - Lit Sports Desk - Lit Sports

Cerile Ciereħante: Good evening, Cata Larga, and welcome this special Rugby World Cup edition of Lit Sports Desk at 18:00 hours! My name is Cerile Ciereħante, and I'm here with Erike Nwora, here on the eve of a very exciting day - the opening match of the 24th Rugby Union World Cup!
Erike Nwora: Yes, very exciting indeed, Cerile. Of course, the Stallions've already landed at Trechoid in Aels, and are busy making their final preparations for their first - and hardest - match against The Fair Republic tomorrow. But otherwise... Well, what do you think of Cata Larga's odds this time around?
CC: Well, obviously we've got a rocky start - we only barely managed to get to this edition of the RUWC, and we didn't go to the 23rd edition at all. But, looking at the Stallions on the pitch, and at their new leadership, and their group, I'm pretty confident we'll get to the Round of 16.
EN: I'm in full agreement. I think the only countries Cata Larga might have trouble with are The Fair Republic, which is the first match we've got, and with Shytysle, the last one. The Fair Republic's ranked third in the world, and Shytysle's unranked but has a heavily defensive strategy aimed specifically for teams like our Stallions. Well, before we go in any further, let's look at Cata Larga's scheduled matches in Pool E in depth!

Image

CC: The Stallions start off with the big match of the entire bunch, so to speak - the game tomorrow between Cata Larga and The Fair Republic.
EN: Exactly, and this won't be a pushover at all. TFR's the third best rugby union team in the world, as per the current rankings, and was the first seed in Pool E. This is gonna be the game everybody watches.
CC: Everybody in Cata Larga's sure to be watching, of course, but do you really think the Stallions stand a chance? I think what the coaching staff and the fans are looking for right now is a repeat of the "glorious defeat" against Uitbregen in RUWC 22. I don't really expect an actual win, either.
EN: I wouldn't be so quick to judge. Obviously this will be a heavily uphill fight, but if Cata Larga keeps up some disciplined running and passing play, we might pull a miracle off - not to mention how Catalarguense manager Enrie Paliemiere is looking for a strong performance to jumpstart their RUWC campaign. Of course, TFR also has an offensively focused team, but it isn't nearly as much so as ours. I'm expecting a high-scoring match, and possibly even a draw or a very slim win for Cata Larga.
CC: I'm very, very doubtful the Stallions can pull something like that off, sorry to say. I agree that the match will be a scorefest, but I'm expecting another "glorious defeat" at best.

Image

EN: Eura, Eura, Eura. Second best in the world at association football, but can they do just as well in rugby football?
CC: Oh, no, no. Not at all.

[Both anchors chuckle.]

CC: I mean, I don't want to make any assumptions, but they're unranked and as far as I know they're still new to the rugby scene. They haven't released their roster yet, so I can't really make any more predictions than that.
EN: Right, but remember, Kernansquillec won the entire cup on their first appearance in the 17th RUWC. I wouldn't fully discount them - maybe their football expertise will rub off on their rugby squad, at least in the team-building and discipline aspects.
CC: Kernansquillec's win was the longest of long-shots, and I really don't think we'll see it replicated ever again, let alone here with Eura. My prediction - an easy win for Cata Larga.
EN: Even though I'd like to keep the possibility of another breakout dark horse alive, I'm gonna have to agree with you. I'm very much expecting a Catalarguense victory.

Image

CC: Ah, Gregoryisgodistan - by far, the most bizarre of sports nations. Want to just refer to them by their trigram? The name's tiresome, honestly.
EN: Whatever you want, Cerile. So, these guys are 90th ranked in the world, tied with the United States of Devonta.
CC: Honestly they might as well be unranked, no? That's a very low ranking in rugby union.
EN: Yes, but remember that Shytysle is unranked and will probably be Cata Larga's second hardest match. Maybe GGS's strategy could end up being as good of a foil to Cata Larga's running and passing focus as Shytysle's is.
CC: Maybe so, but I'm not expecting anything. They haven't released their roster either, so I can't really give an informed opinion, but I'm going to call this match for the Stallions.
EN: Given the lack of info about GGS's squad, I'm going to side with you there. It's entirely possible they can counteract Cata Larga well, but I don't have any evidence to support that, and all other signs point to the odds being very much in favor of Cata Larga.

Image

EN: I don't think anyone expected Shytysle to be a threat when the pools were drawn, but now that we've actually got some info on their squad...
CC: Yeah, these guys have me a bit worried. Not nearly as much as TFR, don't get me wrong, but this strategy they've got working out for them could throw a spanner in Cata Larga's works.
EN: It certainly will be an interesting match to see, pitting Cata Larga's offensive power against Shytysle's possession focused kicking team. I foresee a very low scoring match.
CC: I'm with you there. I'm very worried that the Stallions aren't disciplined enough to resist Shytysle's foul trap.
EN: I'm not so sure. Enrie Paliemiere's been building a very disciplined squad ever since he took the reins.
CC: Keep in mind, Cata Larga's team has always been more about passion than discipline. Come to think of it, we really are the opposite of Shystyle in a lot of ways - we're all about passion, they're all about discipline; we're a rapidly growing economic power, they're a backwater; they have constantly terrible weather, most Catalarguens enjoy warm summers and mild winters... It will be a very, very interesting match indeed.
EN: Agreed. I'm predicting a very low-scoring, very tight win for Cata Larga, maybe even a draw.
CC: I'm in full agreement.

CC: So, that's about all we have for our analysis of Cata Larga's chances in Pool E of this 24th edition of the Rugby Union World Cup! But we aren't finished with our RUWC coverage.
EN: That's right, Cerile. We'll be airing Cata Larga's first match against The Fair Republic tomorrow at 17:00 hours for viewers in Kapa-Trinieta, 18:00 hours for viewers here in Puerte-de-Liberete, and 15:00 hours for viewers in Cassarinia on both Lit Sports and Lit 1. We also have some exclusive interviews with Catalarguense Rugby Union management, as well as Cata Larga's players and coaching staff as they get ready to embark on their quest to win it all. We'll be back with a quick rundown of today's sports highlights as well as coverage of association football's 73rd World Cup and preparations for the Centralis and Nassau Bay Olympics right after this!

Preview of Ethane's matches:
MD1- UNITED STATES OF DEVONTA VS ETHANE
What the Pundits think:
This is going to be a tough game for Ethane. Having had no experience in the rugby union here before, they will be in a difficult position playing against a team who is ranked 90th in the world. Ethane will have to be on full guard against their strong attacks. Not much is known about this team, as they have kept their lineup secret and their style of play secret, so there is not much to comment on.

What the Ethane Rugby Union says:
We have a strong game plan set up for this game. We will be relying on every player to make the best of their abilities. We need to stop them scoring early, because if we stop them scoring early, then i am sure we will be able to get into the game and possibly commit to a decent attack. We will mostly go for drop goals as we have a very defensive mindset, but hopefully this won't stop us getting plenty of scoring opportunities.

What the press says:
''Group of death- Ethane in precarious group to start world cup''
''we might as well just give up already''
''Ethane doomed after drawn in group of Abanhfleft''

What the players say:
''We are going to be going into a tough game to begin, playing against the team ranked 90 in the world. What we have to do is play to the best of our abilities and hopefully we will get the result that we want and deserve. Winning this game will be a massive boost to our morale going into the rest of the group stages, leaving us in a position of possibly going on to do well in the group.''

MD2- ETHANE VS OISINISTAN
What the pundits say:
Bill Cullen's team have a very attacking mindset, so will provide a very difficult challenge to deal with on the attack for Ethane. They will have to work hard in defence, but they do have a defensive mindset, so are well placed to do this. They are unranked, so we don't know how well they are going to perform on this front. Ethane should be trying to hold off their attacks, turnover the ball and then counter for tries of go for lots of drop goals with their strong kicker.

What ERU says:
We have briefed the players on how to deal with this game. We will be enacting our game plan bravo- delta 2, which will put us in the best position possible to win the game. This is a must win game for us if we wish to advance in the competition.

What the players say:
We are going to have to put everything into this game as this is a must win game for us. If we don't win this game, then we are not likely to progress in the tournament. We will operate our plan to best effect, and try to score as much as we can, while defending against this teams brutal attacks.

MD3- EKOZ VS ETHANE
What the pundits say:
This is a tough game for Ethane- one of the toughest games in the group. With Ekoz being one of the favourites to progress in the tournament, Ethane are going to really struggle. Hopefully they will learn from teams like Scotland when they played against Australia, and should of won. They will have to enact their defence to the best of their ability and really try to limit Ekoz's points while scoring a few themselves. They have to try to stay in the game until half term, when hopefully Ethane will be able to group together.

What the ERU says:
We have a plan. It is going to be difficult to do to win this game, but we know what we are going to do, and how we will try to get there. Our plan is extremely risky but we will hope that it succeeds. This may become a game to decide whether we advance or not depending on other results.

What the players say:
We are going to have to not make any mistakes if we want any chance of winning this game, as this is a very difficult team to face, and will be difficult for us to match up to them mentally or physically. We will just have to play our best out there, and hope it comes to something for us.

MD5- ETHANE VS ABANHFLEFT
What the pundits say:
Ethane don't have much chance in this game. Facing a team ranked at 9th in the world union rankings is extremely difficult for Ethane. The fact that this is at the end of the group stages for Ethane will mean that they are tired out. However, the Ethane teams only chance is to try to outplay them through speed and using their fitness, as Ethane would of had a bye day, whereas Abanhfleft will have played Ekoz (22) the day before, so will be slightly exhausted.

What the ERU says:
This game is going to be a challenge for everyone. We will try to take advantage of our rest day before to outplay our opponents, but we will always be on the back foot.

What the players say:
We will put our heart and soul into this game, but we will be in a extremely difficult position in this game. We will try our best and try to pull off a win though.

What are Ethane's Chances?
With 3 ranked teams in the group, they will have a difficult challenge to advance. There is a glimmer of hope for Ethane, but they will constantly be on the back foot. We need to wait until their game to see how well they do in their first game before we evaluate their chances.
Esportivan and Proud.
<drawk> If the entirety of the nation of Ethane was covered in a single cubic foot of Ethane on its surface, lighting it all on fire would cause a 5.44 megaton blast.
Best WorldVision Finish: 2nd. Best World Cup Finish: Quarter-Finals. Best KPB Rank: 8th. Best WBC Finish: 1st.

Rugby Federatie van Uitbregen

Head Coach: Frank Hummels (41 years old)
Frank Hummels comes into the national team fold after a successful spell with Gelk Niuestaad, in which he won two Viktoria Premierships in three years. Hummels took Gelk Niuestaad to those titles with his newly-devised 'pod based' rugby, whereby players play in 'pods' of 2 or 3, moving together on the field. Whilst initially the system was risky, the work-rate provided by the Gelk players made it a hugely successive formula, and he'll look to bring it to the national team. He believes in the importance of all players being able to play the ball in the line, so don't be surprised to see a prop or lock out on the wing. This is not to say that he has strayed away from the typical Uitbregeni forumla of hard-hitting forwards, capable of a powerful rolling maul and scrum. From Gelk Niuestaad, he has brought dynamic young scrum-half Mark Aldenkamp, just 21, which has caused much uproar, as it meant experienced scrum-half Nicolaas Meeuweszen, now 35, was excluded from the squad. Less of a stats-driven, technical coach and more of a hands-on operator, and can be seemed remonstrating wildly in the coaches' box.

Assistant coach: Anders Clemensen (52 years old)
The former Head Coach returns from a year out to be the assistant coach. He brings a wealth of World Cup experience with him, as well as technical expertise. A hardened outer-shell hides a passionate follower of the game, who encourages the vibrant form of rugby Uitbregen has adopted in the last few seasons. Often seen to be in the ear of the younger Hummels, offering advice or suggesting a tactical switch, as he takes charge of most of the tactical planning of the side.

Playing XV

Tight-head Prop: Fred Gelen - 33 years old - Gelk Niuestaad
The unsung hero on which Hummels built his successful Gelk Niuestaad side. A renowned scrummager, Gelen dominated every loosehead in the league. In a pursuit as vague as scrummaging, with skills so undefined, Gelen has created a real niche for himself as someone whom you can rely on to always win the ball back for - he conceded zero scrums against the head last season when in the scrum - and will often win penalties with his power and skill.

Hooker: Aden Bekkering - 24 years old - 29 Denvargen
A surprisingly nimble and lightweight hooker, Bekkering much less of a conventional hooker - lighter and smaller than most of the weighty players Uitbregen has produced before in this position. He fits right into the running system which Hummels has looked to implement, so don't be surprised to see him on the end of an attacking line. A good ball carrier with a notable turn of speed, Bekkering could just as easily play in the back-row, as indeed he did back in junior rugby.

Loose-head Prop: Tian Cuijpers - 23 years old - RV Herde 1996
There is still plenty of grunt in the Uitbregeni pack, and Cuijpers certainly provides a lot of it. He weighs in at a hefty 132kg, and as a result is a fearsome carrier when on the ball, although getting him into a position is somewhat more of a challenge. Not the quickest, nor the lightest on his feet, but carries a lot of weight behind him and subsequently will always be a player feared by opposition teams. A vocal and passionate player, Tian is one of the team's leaders, despite his young age.

Lock: Terenti Arntenzius - 37 years old - Gelk
The Tiger is back for one last crack at the World Cup. His body is creaking, a shoulder injury almost meant he couldn't play in the competition, but those epic reserves of self-determination and strength shone through and he made it. Terenti is famed for his physicality and his breakdown work, where he partners very well with openside flanker Kain Bolgaard in both defence and attack. His tackling is powerful, despite his tall frame, and can be a decent ball-carrier. He calls the line-out, a job he has done well for many years.

Lock: Jaco Albronda - 25 years old - Varde Rugby VC
An exceedingly tall - 6ft 9" - lock, Albronda is in the team by virtue of several strong performances for his club side, Varde Rugby VC. He led the charts in both line-out takes and opposition line-out steals, and is very strong at holding up opposition players owing to his size and forming mauls to give his side scrums. At the breakdown he is a foreboding presence, with his long arms able to get in there and slow the opposition ball right down. He's never afraid to put his body on the line either, which could account for some nagging injuries.

Openside Flanker: Kain Bolgaard - 25 years old - RV Herde 1996
One of the country's hottest young talents five years ago has matured into a player of class and stature. He is a classical blindside flanker - will tackle anything that moves and will hit every ruck on the pitch. His jackling ability is his speciality, and will record a number of turnovers every game. In the loose he is a powerful runner with good feet and a sharp fend. He is already being groomed to be captain when Johannes Tholberg hangs up his boots, which could potentially be at the end of this competition.

Blindside Flanker: Stiaan Koenraad - 21 years old - Gelk
Another controversial selection from Hummels, as Koenraad is often criticised for his apparent lack of work-rate, especially at the breakdown where a flanker should be dominant. But Hummels said he wanted 'that attacking edge', and that's exactly what Koenraad provides. The quickest forward by some margin, he can get to full speed in a matter of steps, and has the ability to punch a hole through defences like that of the best centres in the world. In defence, when he's in the mood, there's no bigger hitter, capable of juddering hits. But until he brings his work-rate up to that of Bolgaard, his detractors won't get off his case, regardless of the magic that he produces.

Number 8: Johannes Tholberg - 34 years old - Gelk Niuestaad (C)
A true hero of Uitbregeni rugby. Built powerfully, coming from hours spent in the gym honing his naturally strong physique, which enables him to be a tremendous ball carrier. He is the primary receiver for narrow attacking plays, and specialises in breaking the first tackle, and when he does, he has a useful burst of speed which allows him to turn a yard of space into a real attacking play. He has great vision to pick passes and attacking lines, and has even been known to kick when the space opens itself up. When he is in full-flight, he is very difficult to bring down. As a leader he is tactically astute with a good rugby brain, and acts as the defensive leader - a master of tackling and breakdown play.

Scrum-Half: Mark Aldenkamp - 21 years old - Gelk Niuestaad
The big call. Aldenkamp is a young, dynamic scrum-half who arrived on the scene as an academy graduate as an injury replacement. On his debut, he played with speed and exuberance unseen from a scrum-half before. He kept out the older, more experienced scrum-half with a string of good performances - in the last 8 games of the season he scored 6 tries, including the winning try in the top of the table decider against RV Herde 1996, as well as being the catalyst for many successful attacking moves. He's a good passer off both hands, as well as a tricky runner, with great agility as well as offloading ability. It remains to be seen how he performs on the biggest stage, although we sense he'll be up to the task.

Fly-Half: Timo Koeman - 23 years old - RV Herde 1996 - KICKER
An untraditional number 10 coming into the large boots left by the indomitable Gabriel Simonis. Rather than looking to kick for territory or for space, Koeman will look to run the ball and spring an attack - even from within his own 22m area. Some critics call him reckless, and indeed has been guilty of mistakes in the past, and does represent somewhat of a risk, especially when the defensive and kicking specialist Oliver Nelissen on the bench, but Hummels is sticking with Koeman, as the beating heart of the quick style of rugby he looks to play. His place kicking is nothing special, and his kicking from hand is erratic, but when he is form, there are few better. He has adept feet and will look to run himself just as much as he will to pass down the line.

Left Wing: Sebastiaan Abrahamsen - 29 years old - Kerjissen Noord RC
Abrahamsen's major strength is not his speed, but his size - at 6ft 3" and 103kg, he is certainly a physical presence on the flanks of the pitch. Rather than trying to go round players, he tends to try and go through them, with mixed success - if he gets it right, it looks fantastic, but if he gets wrapped up and brought down, it looks a bit lazy. Abrahamsen scored 11 tries last season, and will look to remain potent for the national side.

Inside Centre: Andries Mouren - 25 years old - 29 Denvargen
Exciting talent who burst from relative second division obscurity to a big debut season with the Capitals. Mouren is a big-running, big-hitting midfielder who racked up 13 tries as Vikotria Premiership top-scorer, and was rewarded with a spot in the national side. Mouren is impressively fast and has the physical ability to break through the gain-line. Mouren is a fan of launching attacking moves such as switches, scissors and kicking-routines. If allowed space, Mouren will do serious damage to opposition sides with his speed and strength, and his lethal finishing ability.

Outside Centre: Lukas Varden - 23 years old - Klub Amslewijk
A vibrant and dynamic outside centre, who is lightning quick, combined with electric footwork. Varden made his national team debut aged just 21, and in just two years he has established himself as one of the most important players in the squad. Varden has a great ability to see space and to exploit it with the boot and with his feet. Even in seemingly impossible situations, packed in amongst players, he can generate space and get himself a yard to unleash his pace. In a straight foot-race, there are very few players who could take Varden on. With a bright-blue scrum-cap and low socks, as well as a relatively thin disposition, he cuts a striking figure on the pitch.

Right Wing: Laurie Penners - 27 years old - Gelk Niuestaad
A rugby-league convert whose two seasons in Union have yielded 17 tries. His rugby-league skills include a seemingly impossible off-loading ability, so defences have to always stay on their toes when they bring Penners to the ground. He is also strong under the high balls put up by Koeman and full-back Quinten Muyskens, and has the pace to get away from defenders. His defence is somewhat questionable, occasionally going in with the shoulder - old habits die hard - and seeing yellow, but he is capable of those trademark huge hits.

Full-Back: Quinten Muyskens - 21 years old - Klub Amslewijk
The one to watch for Uitbregen, Muyskens is capable of playing on either wing, or even centre, such is his running ability and rugby brain, but he's been shifted into the full-back position because of his defence and his from-hand kicking ability, especially his up-and-under kicks. When on the ball, he is a strong runner, although he could use more his 6ft 2" frame and considerable pace to take on defenders.
