Yeah, carnivore.

It's like a scaly, wingless manticore. Very potent poison. Dumean king of beasts. Feel free to make up the rest yourself.

Schweet, I shall go full Pliny the Elder on it.

You might want to make a form so that people can just TG you additions to the bestiary if they want to add their own.

When you post it I'll link it in the third post.

Although they do actually know each other.

That works, Pyr.

Random thought: The "One-shots and assorted posts" section in the third post has no one-shots.

Stand-alone stories featuring a roleplay's characters that don't really belong in the IC, even though they're made from an in-character persepctive.

Basically short stories about the characters. We made a lot of these in Elfen High, but I haven't seen them much anywhere else.

@Vanquaria: Clarify your question.

I actually don't know how to use those, but I'm pretty sure there's a guide somewhere. I've been looking for it for the past ten or so minutes, but I can't find it, so. -shrug-

No, he is not, I have not yet reviewed your application beyond the numbers on the powergrid. I was merely asking so that I would know whether or not you want to be on the secondary group if I accept you.

As for the secondary group, well, the A-23 is the primary group, but there's already 14 characters there. So I'm making a secondary group. So far though, it's only two of my NPCs there, along with (potentially) Atlannia's and Mortelatuzia's second characters. You can be in it if you want, or be in the main group with everyone else.

Bestiary

Postby Pyrade » Sat Oct 03, 2015 11:42 pm

Image

In the universe of the Redemit, the Apostolic council and Silver Hand Academy, there are many wondrous and menacing beasts that populate the cathedrals and all other planets for that matter. I, Torellius Balthazar of the Phantom Blade, have begun a bestiary, documenting many of these creatures. I look forward to hearing the tales of travellers who have witnessed the grandeur of the marvelous creatures I shall document.

Creatures
  • Pyre Spider
  • Wilvern
  • Scoroleo
  • Sand Horse
  • Telcaronian Tunnel Crawler
  • Telcaronian Barge Worm
  • Aegalitaire
  • Petritan

The Pyre Spider

[Oil painting of a Pyre Spider being used as a mount]
Image
Ardentem Aráneam Telam. I recently encountered this creature in its home in deep craters on a lawless controlled moon in the Pilatius System, quite near to my home on Cathedral Arcadia, where I was fortunate enough to secure a deceased specimen for in depth study. The characteristic overextended Patellas and barbed metatarsals are constructed of the same keratin exoskeleton as the rest of the body. Although the purpose for these barbs is unclear, I hypothesize the creature use these when sparring with another of its species. The common name attributed to this creature comes from its venom and its sticky webbing which emits heat and light on account of a slow releasing chemical reaction. This gentle warmth and light acts as bait for other creatures dwelling in the cold tunnels. The Pyre Spider's venom is a sweet smelling mixture similar to an ancient alchemical formula which becomes volatile when in contact with air. The spider spreads this fluid gently, secreting it from its fangs along the floor around the mouth of its crater where the activated mixture lies until something disturbs it, providing the minor amount of energy required to cause combustion. This is mostly done to defend the spider from predators who may dive into the crater in search of the spider. When attacked the spider ejects this venom forcibly into the air, creating a fine mist of combustible fuel which activates soon after, causing an immense gout of white flames. The bright flames blind the spider's assailant, giving the spider ample opportunity to flee. However, Pyre Spiders seem to use this cover to charge through the flames, enveloping themselves in flame. This activates a substance secreted through pores along the fire retardant exoskeleton which sustains the flames. The spider then proceeds to engage its assailant by attempting to either impale it with the large, solid keratin claws located on the end of the tarsals or by sinking its fangs into the foe and injecting a dangerous dose of the combustible fluid. My observations have found that this venom reacts dangerously with blood and causes the hemoglobin in the system to boil away, both suffocating the victim due to the lack of oxygen transferal and causing immense pain as the veins are scorched from the inside. Natives of this system go to great risks to tame these creatures and use them as mounts and in battle, a Pyre Spider can deal a large quantity of damage to a knight's shields and their person. The spider's naturally reclusive nature makes it quite hard to locate unless you travel away from the main dwellings of the redemit heretics. Out on the colder side of the moon it is easy enough to find the glowing orange webbing, but far harder to locate the spider itself. The Pyre Spider is an immense and graceful creature, but poses significant threat to the unprepared.

The Wilvern

[Native Lawless symbol assigned to the Wilvern]
Image
The Wilvern, Petra habitaculum ductu vipera, hails from the same moon as the Pyre Spider but occurs in very different habitat indeed. The Wilvern resembles something of a snake with a surplus of smaller, tendril like, tails. Its four pronged jaws house a multitude of spiny, dagger like teeth, separating it from the average serpent not only in bite type, but also in method of hunting. While many serpentine beasts lie in wait for their prey, few others use an acidic venom to blind an incapacitate their prey. Along with this rather disturbing means of hunting, to which I have born witness, comes the creature's peculiar method of laying an ambush as well as finding shelter. This strange creature lurks in the shadows of well lit caves, using its caustic fluid to bore into the walls of its cavern, where its small burrow is often mistaken for lunar erosion. Wilvern's use their exceptionally sensitive tendrils to sense oncoming prey, before it anchors its multitude of limbs to the mouth of its burrow, from which it can dart forth and latch onto its prey. Feeding is a most foul ritual and consists of the Wilvern burrowing into the dead or helpless creature. Much more I shall not say, for I fear my digestive system may just rebel. Wilvern are not dangerous to an armoured knight, but should be avoided by unprotected individuals.

The Scoroleo
[Rendering of a Scoroleo]
Image

Cataphractos laesaeque venenum caudam, the Scoroleo, native to the home world of the Valiant Fang. Known as the King of Beasts, this creature has a thick scaled hide which makes striking it far harder than most. This coupled with the beast's lengthy tail forming an arthropod-like metasoma tipped with a venomous stinger. These creatures are solitary hunters and become very territorial as they age out of the juvenile phase. Amongst the Valiant Fang the Scoroleo is a symbol of strength and combat prowess. The infamous sting of this beast is usually fatal and acts quickly, killing an enemy rapidly from within. The potency of this venom is enough to remove most diseases from a victims bloodstream and allows the Scoroleo to eat soon after the kill with no worry of contagion. The bite of a Scoroleo far outweighs the power of any weapon strike. The exceptionally developed Masseter Muscle gives the scoroleo immense crushing power which can pierce armour as easily as an energy cleaver. Energy armour is required to defend oneself against this beast, as well as an exceptional standard of reflex to avoid the stabbing tail. In short, this creature deserves the Valiant Fang moniker of King of Beasts. I have heard many tales of foolhardy knights mounting assaults on the Scoroleo in attempts to prove their honour, only to find their shields rapidly depleted by the kinetic force of a Scoroleo's strikes. Their hard scaled hides are exceptionally durable and can even provide a certain degree of protection against energy weapons. Do not misunderstand, the creature will be damaged by such weaponry, more so than any other weapon, but it will still be far less effective than an energy weapon is on redemit flesh. It is my opinion that the Scoroleo should be left to its own devices, the majestic King of Beasts does not spare challengers.

Alright, Vanquaria, finally got around to reading your app and there's several things that I'd like to point out.

Vanquaria wrote:In his opinion Lady Syvalladine was corrupt, caring only for her rather than the rest of society.

I will say that, though there are plenty of individuals who would be against the Phantom Blade and Lady Sylvalladine in particular, this specifical accusation is pretty nonsensical.

Vanquaria wrote:Natsu was born in the planet of Katumba, located in the south of the High North galaxy.

This is more of a technicality than anything else, but High North, Low West, etc. are quadrants, not galaxies. A quadrant holds hundreds of galaxies.

Vanquaria wrote:When he was 12 years old he was out playing with his friends in the streets. Coming back home he found his parents had been killed by the a team of knights because his father was a suspected former knight of a Lawless Order.

What Order did these knights that murdered Natsu's parents belong to? Because most Lawful Orders, the Phantom Blade included, would not act in this manner.

Vanquaria wrote:During his training he discovered he had special electrical powers inside him. Despite having no one to help him he practised by himself, often by trial and failure.

Firstly, nobody has 'special innate powers'. They have the potential to practice magic. This potential can be turned into the ability to practice magic, but only through extensive training, and certainly not through trial and error. You could say that someone taught him magic, or that he learned through old books or whatever, and you could say that he decided to specialize in electricity magic, but the chunk of app that I quoted above doesn't really blend in with the universe, sorry.

Vanquaria wrote:Natsu came on top but instead of being given a position as a soldier which was what he wanted he was sent to the Academy.

That doesn't happen. No Order, nor the Academy itself, can force anyone to attend to the Academy.

Vanquaria wrote:Natsu’s father was called, ‘’ Satan’s Messenger’’ because of his speed with the swords when he was younger. His father’s Lawless Order lost a war with a a Lawful Knight Order and he fled into hiding.

This one's a technicality again, but I feel compelled to point out that the name "Satan" doesn't really mean anything to the Redemit. You'd be better off calling him "Dragon Messenger" or something like that, mate.

Vanquaria wrote:[Electrical Impulse Eyes]:2 – He can activate his eyes to see the electrical currents inside people to predict their next movement. He uses these eyes against strong enemies only as eye strain is a common problem if he uses his eyes too long.
[Electrical Impulse Release]:2 – He can focus large amounts of electricity to specific parts of his body and release to shock enemies. This move works similar to a defibrillator when he attacks but with a lot more electrical current pushed through to shock the target.

Here, I'm going to give you a critique, and then a tip. Firstly, I'm not too fond of that first power, since it seems godmoddy to me. If you could at least say that it is imperfect and doesn't always work properly, then I would have nothing against it, however.

As for the tip, well, both of these abilities are electricity-based, so, you could as well just say that, instead of having 2 points in one and 2 points in the other, Natsu has 4 points in Electricity Magic. That way, he can do these things, and he can do many others, giving him a lot more versatility.

So, yeah, there's quite a bit of stuff in your app that I'd like you to fix. If you do fix it, however, I'll be more than happy to give the app another look, so don't be discouraged.

Lawl. Well I guess he could make that accusation if he was particularly ignorant, but I doubt that's the impression of Natsu that you want to give. His father certainly doesn't give that vibe from what I can see.

I'll be waiting. -nods-
