Almost indeed :) It's the 2nd Mass Effect game that has me kind of iffy as it's not a favorite of mine- and as it's not one I enjoy (the game has you making snap choices with out telling you what the choice is- just a color of red or blue) I've yet to play the third.

As for playing an Alien I too find that interesting. The closest in XCOM has been the multiplayer matches. Perhaps XCOM will go the route of Dragon Age Origin. Dragon Age has a DLC that allows the player to take on the role of Darkspawn in an alternate timeline. XCOM could do the same with the aliens.

I'm tempted to approach Charmera with an alien occupation RP but feel the Monster Girl and Not So Normal School Life RPs to already be very close to that- sure they don't have the political situation but they still have most of the daily life aspects.

I can hardly wait for the none human RPs. So ready am I for these RPs that I am tempted to start that 'post alien invasion' RP in the style of OM&T: A Place We Use to Know.

Edit: Alright, after watching a clip where the Zin from some game called Saint's Row destroy the Earth I'm thinking that perhaps a justification for the occupation in the RP can be 'protecting the Earth'- where an as of yet to be encounter genocidal race is in a direct path towards the planet (according to the occupation forces)- in short- Earth has been annexed by a galactic hegemony under the pretense that 'temporary' subjugation is better then extinction.

Though players can be certain that not every human is going to believe in this race, and will likely believe the occupation forces that have made them up as some sinister distraction and ploy to obtain Human cooperation.

Edit: Do not that I'm still going for the 'Benevolent Alien Invasion' TV trope.

Edit: I think that rather then determine who is right in regard to the Aliens being benefactors or not- perhaps just like any other civilian alien civies are not fully aware of their leader's intentions if any malevolent intentions are to be had.

Edit: or I just need to be patient.

Since I am unsure how long I'll have to wait I'll keep considering the Alien Occupation RP. I do wonder if I should cash in on XCOM's popularity by having it set in the New World of XCOM2 (a version of it)
Image

or if it should be set in a setting we players can mold as our own- thus avoiding what ever constraints XCOM would have upon us.

I would like the creative freedom.

With that said, I find another question- A Place We Use to Know derailed quickly, and I blame how the players where able to play rebels(unsanctioned supers)- yet in the alien occupation situation I do want to allow that player option (to be a member of the resistance).

You know what they say; "Who ever gives up a little freedom to gain a little security... will loose both."

They almost were not going to let me go out and recover it as I need to wake up at the ass crack of dawn tomorrow assuming we do not get this thing back and I have to walk to where it is as I got some business there.
XD
I'd have to walk literally right past it on the way to where I was going, it is just chilling in the middle of freaking nowhere!

I mean, could catch the patrol heading over there come morning as they are heading the same way, but I really do not feel like getting stuck in a cramped vehicle with a bunch of guys I don't even know. Close.

Players have the option of being an urban level resistance member- the kind of person who smuggles supplies, spies for, and hides operatives- the civilian who risks his life in the name of liberty. Eventually the resistance players would be able to build up a force capable of making a tactical strike against some installation in the city- something the Aliens have created in order to send a message.

Resistance members would be opposed by Peacekeepers (Occupation Forces policing the city in the style of Military Police) and by citizens who believe the aliens are indeed on Earth as benefactors (those who accept the occupation's propaganda).

Players would be able to be any of those three; Resistance, MPs/Alien Residents, or Conformists.... at least in the current concept that's still being worked out.

To be honest my interest lies in humans adjusting to alien rule, and thus I do very much want some daily life to take place- even if going off to a diner is an excuse to drop off a package containing photos the occupation wouldn't want in public hands.

One thing I'd like to get into from the Alien perspective is the outlook of a colonist. The Germans who moved to Africa or the English who moved to India. In the case the English one can clearly see they lived at least close to the natives, and in most cases of colonization colonizers where fascinated with local lore- even if they looked at the lore from their own understanding of the world.

I want the world of the setting to have been under occupation for a few of decades (10 to 30 years)- at least enough for the initial shock to have faded.. The resistance it's self would likely be lead by veterans of the terrestrial defense forces- people who actually fought the aliens before the occupation. People who remember a time when Humans governed themselves. People who remember first hand the atrocities committed by the invaders.

While I want that aspect I also want it to exist along side the tamer side regarding cultural collides and how the Humans and Aliens are integrating as I'm sure you have individuals who promote apartheid.

Edit: Actually, I think I just lost focus- this was about humans coming to terms with alien occupation- now it's about colonialism or perhaps I'm exploring the various focal points the RP can have. To be honest the resistance was a side thing in my initial planning.

As in, I almost wasn't going to allow players to be Resistance members and just had them to reflect that people would resist. I however realize that players will want to and thus need an outlet to rebel and regain control of Earth. I realize that such a struggle gives the RP more direction then the initial idea would have. So yes- the resistance is a focus; players however are not exclusively members of the resistance- and no alien can be part of the resistance. It's human only.

Alright, since most if not all of us have had some sleep let's go back to the root of the RP concept and work on it from there.

  • Setting: Earth 10 to 30 years into occupation by extraterrestrial forces who are moving into the cities.
    • Theme 1: Humans coming to terms with Alien rule.
    • Theme 2: Resistance being carried out in a manner akin to the mafia with the aim of causing terror in order to lead to a more open resistance towards the aliens.
    • Theme 3: Benevolent/Heroic Colonialism- the same way western civilization justified their treatment of natives in Africa and in India. In short the more they improve the lives of the Humans (better transportation, medicine, and the more the aliens spread their own ideology to the Humans) the more they feel their presence a blessing.

Do speak up if you have even the slightest comment.

But Mafia, huh?

You are correct. I feel the underground nature of the resistance (I guess the Human Mafia XD ) will prevent the situation from A Place We Use to Know from coming to be. I lost interest in A Place We Use to Know as soon as their was war in the streets.

My intention is to give the rebel players a way to 'kick the man' that doesn't pull a large number of characters into it. I'm not into war RPs, and thus I try to avoid them but through Gamma World: The Earth Inherited I found that I can handle a resistance being in the setting. Assassinations, kidnappings, and raids- all those I can handle. It's when a massive fight takes place that levels a city- well, it's when that happens, and when the streets run with none selective death that I just loose interest.

The resistance has a goal, it's just been a long time since they had the resources for something major (they could certainly grow into an ISIS but such takes time, right now they are akin to the French Resistance of WWII.

Does this disinterest you?

While it's not open resistance, it's a resistance nonetheless, and I've said before that I wanted to do a resistance RP. Just as long as I hold guns, kill aliens, it's all the same to me.

Alright- I desire this to be reviewed in order to find out if anyone has something they don't like about the set up or that they really like about the set up;

=Overlords=
[Image here]

The Earth was invaded three decades back by an extraterrestrial force calling itself the Sovereignty that now occupies the planet. Earth is now it's protectorate, and media reminds us that their is an entity far worse then the Sovereignty- a genocidal mesh of nanites out to destroy all life- terraformers who never stopped replicating and continue to spread through out the galaxy; destroying native life and rebuilding the world to suit the hellish ecology of their creators who long ago went extinct before they could make use of the worlds afflicted by the nanites. Earth, they say, is a vital location for combating this threat.

The Sovereignty consists of various races that are under the protection of 'the strong ones'- who established the sovereignty billons of eons ago to combat the nanites, those the aliens call 'reavers' due to how the nanites assault a world. Some races in the Sovereignty have a seat on the Council of Strong Ones, but the majority like Earth are under a protectorate status until they prove capable of self defense- a feat they rarely prove.

Apparently had Earth been able to repel the colonization fleet an alliance would be proposed- but since Earth failed the test of 'the Strong ones' they are like so many others a protectorate- which the aliens will argue isn't a bad thing. Not that someone who is fed up with the surveillance, inability to run political campaigns or protest, and struck with how the laws favor the colonist- will ever listen.

Factions
  • Colonists - Aliens from the political entity calling it's self the Sovereignty residing on Earth. Earth is a frontier- a resource rich world full of salt, water, and lithium! Some come to enlighten, some to heal, some for the riches, and others for science- how did human society develop and can we draw parallels within our own society?
    • Peacekeepers - Peacekeepers are military personnel who are now working to keep order on occupied Earth. They will be working along side Human enforcers as they man check points, and keep a look out for known 'terrorists' who are a threat to the good citizens of the sovereignty.
  • Conformist - In wake of Alien occupation life has at large improved for Humanity. Under the vigilant eyes of the Peacekeepers, and global surveillance crime is rather unheard of by the public, save in regard to the resistance, who are made out to be citizens lead astray by sentiments of the past. Conformist either openly or reluctantly welcome the aliens. Some where saved by alien medicine, or feel some other debt to them, while others have simply lost faith in rebellion and just want to live with out issue.
  • The Resistance - The will to fight however hasn't died out, it's simply taken to a less open route. Made up of hackers, underground journalists, war vets, human elites who lost much of their wealth in the war, and street level enforces the Resistance is a group exclusive to Humans. It seeks to insight distrust, and diminish confidence in the Alien occupation forces. It's words however are not yet refined, and often it's messages are full of speculation put forward as truth- yet among all the xenophobia, as it's been labeled, is truth. They find out what conformist do not, and then spread the word. But the information game isn't' their only front- assassinations, and raids on medical clinics (specifically those dealing with genetic modification or cybernetic enhancement) along with assaults on the facilities of successful alien industries (such as the Lithium Mining operations) have made the Resistance into the Terrorist as far as global media is concerned. Yet even with this reputation, one they do not deny, most resistance leaders understand that with victory will come vindication.

Legal Matters
  • Only government officials of the Protectorate, licensed colonists, and those working in the area of Law Enforcement are permitted access to laser, plasma, sonic, and automatic projectile weapons. Obey.
  • The Protectorate will reward anyone for the surrender of contraband war relics- the weapons known as 'assault' (capable of burst fire) are emblems of war and serve only that purpose. It is time to 'bury the hatchet' and move forward together for a brighter more unified future. A Peacekeeper will be sent to recover the weapon on our behalf.
  • Urban zones are Weapon Free Zones. Obey. These zones will be marked, and any weapon on one's holding before entering an Urban Zone is to be handed over to the Peacekeepers at the gated entrance. Holders of Contraband will be treated in a manner according to law.
  • Trial by Peers is null, our Inquisitors will examine all cases as a third impartial party- your trial by jury is flawed, and is only a hint at the mob rule of 'democarcy'.

Technology
  • The Aliens do not have Shielding Technology. They do however have light weight anti-ballistic armor. But like any armor their are areas left uncovered in order to permit movement.
  • Alien energy weapons are lithium-Ion based.

Question?

What do you mean by assaults? And how effective are firearms, melee weapons, hand-to-hand, etc. against Peacekeepers? Do they use some sort of shield system for their soldiers? Do they use advance ballistic or energy based weapons?

Well, in the end, it became more than one :/

I'd define the 'assault' as any weapon capable of burst fire (and will make note of it). They do have energy weapons- lithium being used in such weapons. They will have Gyrojet weapons (imagine a pistol that has a rocket propelled bullet), but no shielding. I'll have to make a technology section on this.

As for how these restrictions will effect resistance characters- well, they already break the law and thus will already have the weapons and smuggling operations will likely involve getting such weapons to operatives in urban zones. It's likely they may even produce them from hidden production centers.

Gyrojet..... Hmmm, if I recall, they're not that really effective weapons unless they have a long barrel. Because from a carbine or pistol length barrels, the projectiles come out too slow to effectively engage targets.

Wouldn't portable rail rifles be more effective or something for them?
