Point. But I could flip this around and ask why, if we are conscripting, we couldn't just send the women to other non-combat units and send the men they free up to the infantry.
Your earlier point about mechanization is correct. But greater mechanization also means relatively more need for rear services and relatively less need for bodies on the front line. Infantry IIRC only account for something like 5% of all manpower in the US military so there doesn't seem to be a need to "broaden" the pool of potential recruits. On the contrary, a modern military could be highly selective of its infantry and probably (in contrast to historical practices) should be.

Like, I probably wouldn't qualify for REME reserve by the time I go in if I had to pass regular infantry standards.

The preferred blade length is about 29-30 inches with total length is about 42 inches.

well, if you make a chinese sword with japanese "steel" and blade thickness slightly thicker than a kitchen knife then it would be perform as I descrip... I think...

Canadian Army fitness standards are universal, and they do alright.
The flip side to this though, is that if you join the Canadian Army and are not quite up to par, they will work with you to get there before you go to BMQ.

What's Japenese steel? Do you mean differential heat treating? That's just hardening certain parts of the blade, like having a super hard edge and a relatively soft spine. Blades like that stay bent when you bend them, and the edge cracks and breaks. If you want a sword that is versatile, differential heat treating is the worst you can do.
To figure out what kind of sword you need, I need to know the era, the culture, who will use the sword and how you want them to use it.

Well, REME told me much the same thing as well. But, combat support standards are lower than infantry, and reserve combat support is lower still.
I can pass the 1.5 mile run at my current level of unfitness. Once. Then I might actually die.
Of course once I get in, I'd like to use it as a convenient point in which to become fit.

See, the standards are universal, but the reserves and some non-combat arms trades just do PT on their own time. Which just ends up with Tim Horton's PT.
In the reserves, and especially there, combat arms are the most fit. The NCMs and NCOs are generally more fit then the dinosaurs who remember when they trained to kill BRDM-2s in the Fulda Gap. However, a lot of those older guys are in the reserves to pass on experience and therefore often skip out on PT.
I had a warrant make fun of me for not being very muscular, and when he showed up for the Sergeant Major's PT, he struggled. And when I say struggled I mean I had no issue doing the circuit training, but he had to lie down and take a break.
tl:dr Combat arms in Canada always have higher fitness. Generally the rule.

It's what you'd expect and wish for. If non-combat groups had higher fitness than combat arms, something has gone very wrong.
