It tok 6 hours for cyclone Alexina to pass over Barunia, but the storm has left devastation in its wake on a scale far in excess of what was predicted. Alexina passed over the south coast of Barunia Island and then crossed the strait to Marion. Areas affected by the cyclone include the city of Sheppardton and its surrounds, inland to Albriciton, Mortonville and the Black Coast in West Barunia; and in Marion Fairweather and its surrounds, Mt Rowe and Carolin Peak and the west coast to D'Orlando Bay. Other parts of Marion, including Edwardton and Odessa, were also affected by the storm, but to a lesser scale.

Sheppardton was the first place to be hit, and it was on a grand scale. Wind speeds of over 250km/h hit the coastal city, ripping the roofs off buildings and toppling walls. Cars were slammed into walls, boats were overturned, and caravans simply disappeared. Trees were uprooted and power poles and signs were plucked out of the ground still attached to their concrete anchors and became missiles. But while the wind caused much destruction, the biggest threat to the city came from the rain, which came in sheets and caused the Sheppard river to burst its banks, despite sandbag reinforcing having been laid down, sometimes up to two metres high. The widespread flooding has left 40% of the city underwater, with only the roofs of some buildings showing. There have been two recorded fatalities as a result of the cyclone, however the death toll is expected to rise as rescue and clean-up efforts get underway this morning.

Elsewhere in West Barunia, flooding has affected townships further up the Sheppardton river, and the township of Mortonville had its police station, which was being used as a disaster command centre, flattened by a large tree. At least one house along the Black Coast was literally blown into the sea as Alexina left West Barunia on its way to Marion.

The city of Fairweather became poorly named as Alexina hit the high cliffs near the Bay of Good Fortune. The city was saved some of the destruction that was wreaked on Sheppardton, but still copped a battering as the cyclone ripped through the inland portion of the city, tearing up everything in its path. Once again, roofs, cars and trees were all ripped from their moorings and flung into the air to cause destruction wherever they landed.

The cyclone continued through Marion, and some reports suggest several houses have slipped down the sides of the mountain. Along the west coast, many fishermen may face an uncertain future after their boats were overturned, and the navy reported the destruction of sensitive equipment at Pirate's Cove. Cyclone Alexina faded out over Mount Marion and headed into the sea, dumping a load of rain on Odessa as it went and causing some damage to trees and power lines in that township.

The clean-up effort has already begun in both West Barunia and Marion, with four navy ships loaded with humanitarian supplies visiting the affected areas. In Sheppardton though, the clean-up has become a rescue effort as workers attempt to save people from the flood waters. Emergency service personnel are pouring into Sheppardton from all over Barunia to help, while in Marion, rescuers attempt to clear a road back up to Mt Rowe to assess the situation. In both cities, the focus remains less on repairing the physical destruction, and more on helping those affected by this terrible disaster.

Lesson Learned: Without Usama O'Bearga, We Suck

Round of 16 - Lobyuseistvooshu's outstanding right winger has long been a valued component of the Gold-Whites' attack, but only when the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse's star midfielder is left out of the Maritime Empire team do we all fully realize how crucial a tool he is. Fans will be shaking their heads and wondering what could have been; two yellow cards acquired by Mr. O'Bearga in the Cup of Harmony group stage rendered him suspended for the Golden Crows' octofinal fixture against heavily favored Cosumar. As one could have predicted, Stvoto Latoli was utterly toothless, and aside from Beolagh Athey's opportunistic 15th minute penalty shout (which the Guayabalese referee correctly waved away), Brendan al Tameer's outfit could barely even graze the Azure Dragons' penalty area.

Ultimately, the Cosumarites' superior fitness did the trick. The Gold-Whites' stiff defense was breached in the 55th minute when, near the midfield circle, Ace Newman reached a Maynard Gorham long ball before Ióseph Drummond could. Flicking the ball on, Newman tore down the left wing before being closed down by Toumani Thušabhi near the edge of the penalty area. He then found Anders Engström drifting in about seven yards behind him, more centrally. Engström was patient - the Golden Crows should have sensed the danger - and then (just as Vareza Na'Noni began a fateful charge toward goal a few yards behind him) the Mallox playmaker found the lightning-fast feet of Tomasso Tenebrosa, streaking in on the right side. The 24-year-old, whose work rate and composure impressed neutrals all day long, played an inch-perfect ground cross into the feet of Na'Noni, and the Avenida Principal ball-winner tapped the ball past a poorly-positioned Orman for the match's only goal.

It was not an awful way to go out for the Maritime Empire - holding a team that destroyed them in a friendly just before the Cup of Harmony to a paltry one-nil win is acceptable. Additionally, the team al Tameer brought along to the Royal Kingdom of Quebec was considered by many to be a B-team... a motley crew of youngsters, veterans, and outsiders. Their performance is nothing to scoff at - when the standouts from this tournament are added to the full-on first team, perhaps Stvoto Latoli can begin to rise the ranks of world football.

But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. As I leapt atop my broom, I could already hear the wailing of the merpeople from the depths; their last shred of dignity, the last remnant of their kingdom, their last symbol of hope; raped by the tyrannical humans.

Chiata Times
Suns Hold Out on Penalties

Chiata had performed well in the group stage of the Cup of Harmony. The 3-0 win over Associated Godlands set the Suns up nicely. Even better, Chiata dfeated Abanhfleft 4-1 to clinch the Round of 16. That game sure had a lot of emotion in it, considering Abanhfleft denied Chiata from clinching qualification in World Cup 71 Qualifying. With something sweet, there must be something sour. In the last group stage match, Chiata lost 1-0 at the hands of Vermark. The offense had been performing very well over the last two games, so being held to zero was a bitter pill to swallow. All of this in consideration, considerable doubt was cast upon Chiata's prospects as they were lined up to play Ceni in the Quarter Finals. Would the attack perform as it had in the two of the three games? Would it sink to the level it had done against Vermark? All of this was put into mind as Chiata travelled to Coalfields in Osteria.

Chiata had been in quite a few Round of Sixteens. They have won quite a few as well. The Suns had won their Round of Sixteen games in the two Cup of Harmonies prior. Throwing the respective ranks of the two nations in, Chiata was narrowly the favorite to win. Ceni would be the side that would kick off first. Ceni was full of energy at the start. Koromin produced a scare when he shot the ball from distance and it nailed off the crossbar in the 13th minute. This was a wake up call for the Suns, who had been playing admittedly slugishly at the start. Carroll rallied the squad and soon momentum shifted to Chiata. They probed the defense for a while. Lockwood seemed slow to react that day, so it was decided that Chiata would attack from that end. Davus reared in with the ball into the box and sure enough, Lockwood was behind her eating dust. Medina and Travaran moved into challenge and forced Davis to ditch the ball over to Pearlman. Since Medina and Travaran had moved from their positions, Pearlman had a clear shot at the top of the box. She took the chance and released one from distance. Ryaden had fast enough reflexes to jump towards the ball's trajectory. He extended to his full length and punched the ball away. All across the stadium, spectactors began to stand due to the excitement. Axakel swooped in to clear the lazy ball. He dove down and kicked it with all his might, considering the ball was in the six yard box. However, Pearlman was right in front of the ball, so it hit her square in the gut. Pearlman was surprised and kealed over in pain, but the ball deflecting straight into the goal. Chiata was up 1-0 by the 30th minute, but Pearlman had to leave the pitch and was replaced by Tillson.

Ceni was now down by a score. It is very hard to score when playing the Suns. However, the Cenians HAD to score in order to keep their hopes alive. Kirk Koromin decided to change things up by putting in de Santigo in place of Noveth. The exchange did the trick as momentum shifted once more. Cossadel got off a shot at the corner of the net and Truex only just barely tipped the ball over the net. Koromin took the resulting corner and sent it in high and slow. Out of nowhere, del Olmo raced in, leaving his marker, Stewart, far behind. Del Almo chopped the ball straight into the ground. Truex dived to make a save but the ball took an akward spin and found itself in the net. Halftime would have the game tied 1-1. Strangely, with all the action in first half, there would be barely any in the second half. The score would stay 1-1 through nintey minutes. Even more, neither side would score after thirty minutes of extra time. By far, Ceni was the most off ballance due to the defensive nature of the match. The game would have to go to penalties. Truex would put up another display by allowing only Cossadel's penalty kick to go through. On the other hand, Chiata only produced two penalties, but it was enough. It only takes one better to win.

Chiata 1 - 1 Ceni (1-1 AET, 2-1 Pen.)

A GUIDE TO THE COSUMARITE SPACE COLONIES

The Cosumarite people have always had their eyes cast to the skies. Some of the oldest tales that have passed down through the generations relate to the infinite beyond and what it might hold. It was this wanderlust and thirst for knowledge that extended our civilization to the stars sooner than most. In this series, I will profile each of the major extraterrestrial celestial bodies with colonies that fall under the Cosumarite crown. Colloquially referred to as "The Colonies", these diverse and far-flung places are now a vital part of the Cosumarite culture and economy and are represented as equals to the home-world Fiefs at Congress in Ramusok.

#5 - VARVONTI
Image

Varvonti is the outermost of nine moons orbiting the gas giant Jansfad in the Kepler 3 system, which is approximately 53 light years away. A volatile, volcanic world, Varvonti is covered by enormous lava flows and lava plains and experiences frequent meteor showers. Most official Cosumarite settlements on the planet are dedicated to mining precious jewels and radioactive metals out of the lava. Oversight from Cosumar is lax, however, because of the distance and unpleasant conditions, so Varvonti has a reputation as a lawless colony where criminals and the hard-pressed flock to "disappear". It was named after a former Space Exploration Agency (SEA) astronaut, James Anthony Varvonti, who died in a rocket crash in 792.

History: Jansfad, Varvonti's gas giant, was one of the first exoplanets identified by SEA's Kepler telescope upon its completion in 799. Kepler 3, Jansfad and Varvonti's star, was discovered less than a week after the Kepler program launched, and all of its seven planets and 29 moons (of which Varvonti is one) were catalogued by 800. Varvonti, Jansfad's ninth moon, was not suspected to be anything special at the time. Though hyperspace travel was developed in the 880s, the Kepler 3 system was not visited by Cosumarite spacecraft until 930, well after many Cosumarite colonies had already been established (including nearby Kepler 21 planet Regéla in 927). SEA had sent the probe Freedom to the system to take pictures of Jansfad and its moons. The third moon, Aron, was what most were excited to see because of its purported frigid oceans of half-oxygen, half-ammonia. Aron turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, as its ocean was actually mostly ammonia and too toxic to sustain life. Varvonti quickly stole the show when Freedom began experiencing technical difficulty with its communications whenever it got too close. Speculation ran rampant in the press about what the cause could be. When SEA got the first photos back, it saw a hot, tumultuous moon with volcanic activity visible from space. Life didn't seem likely, but the geologists were excited.
Image
A manned trip to the enigmatic moon was scheduled for 932. The team of scientists selected a landing site on a (relatively) cool, hardened lava plain in the least volcanically active locale on the moon. But it was active in a different way. Almost immediately upon landing, the Cosumarite ship was attacked by primitive indigenous creatures. Given the extreme conditions on Varvonti, they were quite surprised to find any life at all - let alone lava rock-slinging bipedals. The tribal Varvontians were small in stature and their advances harmless to ship, however, so the Cosumarites comfortably waited them out. Despite their understandable confusion, fear and mistrust (which still exists today), some sort of an understanding was reached with the natives in which they allowed the scientists to continue their exploration undisturbed. The disturbance to our communication and navigation equipment was eventually attributed to Mirkonite, a newly discovered heavy and radioactive metal with unique electromagnetic properties. Mirkonite exists in large quantities across the surface of Varvonti. Workarounds were eventually developed, but it still remains difficult to get good comm signals and tracking/map signals on the moon - making Varvonti all the more appealing for people looking to get off the grid. Their surveys showed high amounts of lots of valuable jewels and metals being forged into the massive volcanoes and arriving on the frequent meteor showers. The moon was not approved as habitable by Ramusok for official colonization, but Cosumarite corporations arrived en masse in the 940s to start mining for these valuables. These corporations rapidly built mining stations, often failing to meet Cosumarite safety standards but continuing anyways unlawfully throughout the 40s and 50s. Conditions were hot and miserable - only the lowest of the low worked in the volcanic mines. But gradually, as operations on Varvonti expanded and grew more important, these corporations innovated ways to make Varvonti more habitable and comfortable to attract a higher standard of worker and in greater numbers. Like biodomes, lightweight breathing masks and coolant suites. Nothing like the profit motive. As quality of life improved around the mines in the 960s and 970s, actual settlements began to spring up around them - mostly within the biodomes. By 980, 300,000 Cosumarites lived permanently on the fiery moon and only 170,000 were involved in the mining industry. An actual self-sufficient economy developed on Varvonti. In 992 (about ten years ago), conditions in many major Varvonti settlements finally met standards to earn recognition as official Cosumarite colonies. While life in major Varvonti colonies like Fintabishi and Buscari, with plenty of biodomes and upkeep money, is fairly comfortable, there are still a lot of shoddy mining outposts with inhumane conditions and unidentified criminal shithole settlements across the moon. Cosumarite Congress in Ramusok is currently debating how to tackle this issue. Mining megacorporations are under increasing scrutiny for these illegal "volcano-sweatshops".

Geology & Climate: Varvonti is a very young and volatile world, torn apart by opposing gravitational forces of the colossal gas giants Jansfad and Udenral, with the former being the closer of the two. The intense geological activity and large amount Mirkonite creates natural scanning interference. In progress

Image
Life: The native Varvontians (bottom left) leap across the lava fields to mine the planet's valuable minerals in the more unreachable areas of the lava and return them to the mining outposts for handsome rewards of technology (especially coolants), gems and food from the alien miners. Because of the very high gravitational forces on the moon, Varvontians have evolved to be short and squat, with incredible resistance to heat. The first life on the planet was a microscopic extremophile that thrived in the volcanic conditions, likely arriving via one of the many meteor showers. From these evolved hard-shelled arthropods not unlike snails - but with hardly any moisture in their bodies. Cosumarite scientists are constantly amazed by the endurance of life on Varvonti. These were the ancestors of the sentient Varvontians, who still have that leathery, heat-resistant skin and hard shell on their backs that they can retreat within when the heat is too great. Their many source of nutrition is the "lava slug", a hardy animal that has slithered the moon's lava plains, caves, crevices and volcanoes since primordial times. They are generally unconcerned with the affairs of humans and keep to themselves, mostly only attacking when they feel we have began mining too close to their homes. Some Varvontians, however, are openly hostile to humans and occasionally pick off miners from some of the less-secure, smaller outposts. They fashion armor from lava slug shells for additional protection. In Progress

Image
Settlements: In parenthesis is the corporation that originally founded each mining settlement and still carries out most of the operations and administration within to this day. Colonies marked with an asterix have been officially recognized by Cosumar as colonies and now have government-appointed overseers as well. Unmarked settlements are not official colonies due to either unacceptable living or working conditions, or failure to comply with other Cosumarite regulations. To the right is Romstafar Outpost, the largest such unrecognized settlement. It is known as the biggest criminal haven on the moon, also with some of the most difficult/ambitious mining jobs. In progress
1. Buscari (Fintabishi Metal) - 48,000*
2. Fintabishi (Fintabishi Metal) - 45,000*
3. Aläng (Aläng Industries) - 35,000*
4. Romstafar (Freeman-Bernstein Corp.) - 33,000
5. Iki (Fintabishi Metal) - 26,000*

Image
And most importantly, soccer: Only settlements with large bio-domes have soccer pitches and can support a team. Varvonti United (nickname "Flames", crest left), based in Fintabishi, is the biggest club on the moon and currently plays in Tredje Ligan (third tier). Buscari Bridge Force and Romstafar Outpost are two other teams in the top five tiers. Smaller Varvontian clubs have frequently had to drop out of Cosumarite competitions due to substandard stadia/hospitality/travel conditions. In Progress

NABL Western Division Preview

In the following days, we're going to be doing extensive previews of the twelve teams of the NABL, division by division. We're continuing with the Western Division and our projected 2nd place finisher, the Newfield Express. All of our numbers are produced in-house by our statistics team.

Biggest Projected Hitter/Pitcher Improvement: Chris Snyder, 1.5 WAR/500 PA; Jason Durand 1.4 WAR/175 IP

Biggest Projected Hitter/Pitcher Decline: Mark Hunter, minus-1.4 WAR/500 PA; Brent Winfield, minus-1.7 WAR/175 IP

Hitter With Most Projected Days Missed: Justin Davidson, 22 days

Highest Projected Starting Pitcher DL Probability: Brent Winfield, 28 percent

Best Offseason Move: Getting Justin Davidson to play center field. He may not hit much, and he's a bit of an injury risk, but he was worth 2.2 wins above replacement last year. This after only appearing in 88 games, and batting his way to a line twenty percent worse than league average. Yes, that's how good he is on defense.

Worst Offseason Move: Not picking up another player to play first base. Hunter's a league-average hitter there, but that's only because he mashes lefties. I'm talking career .365/.417/.508 against them. He's a lot worse against righties, and there were any number of bats to be had fairly cheaply that they could have paired with him. As it is, the Express' plan is to have ten-year minor league vet Hunter Rutherford platoon at 1B. Rutherford does have over 180 minor league homers, but he also has a career strikeout rate of 25%. He'll be exposed.

Greatest Team Strength: Youth. Bryan Lamb, Justin Ballard, Chris Snyder, Charlie Alexander, and Jason Durand are all 25 or younger and could form the building blocks of a great team for years to come. Durand and Snyder are projected to take a big step forward in their second year in the bigs, while Lamb and Ballard provide value on both offense and defense. Even Alexander's underwhelming slash line is made up for by his strong baserunning and solid defense. This team is here to stay.

Greatest Team Weakness: Youth. They folded like some cheap origami last year down the stretch, turning what looked like an unlikely epic into just another burnout tale. They lost the division by one game, something they could have rectified had they not gone 8-12 over their last twenty games. The young players are good, but they couldn't handle the pressure. They did not look good in Unity Cup play either, failing to win a single game and combining blowouts with heartbreaking losses. They should have their sea legs this year, but they are vulnerable to veteran squads.

Player We Can’t Wait to Watch: Kelvin Freeman. He's still the best player on the team and a top-five player in the league, by a wide margin. His speed may have faded a little now that he's in his thirties, but a 30/20 season is definitely not out of the question. He is the Express' leader, and his motivational speeches are legendary.

Noteworthy Miscellaneous Stat: The Express' pitchers are throwing some funky pitches. Each of their starters ranked in the top 10 in the league for most average break on their pitches in at least one pitch category. Adrian Romero's palmball has much more sink on it than average, while pitch tracking software often can't tell whether Jason Durand is throwing a slider or a cutter with some late life. The good break on these pitches should baffle hitters, but it's certainly going to keep Bryan Lamb on the move. He might be the only catcher in the league quick enough behind the plate to handle this staff.

Off-Field Story Line: The owner of the Express, Vito Sousa, is in poor health. He hasn't been able to come to a game in a couple of years and he remains stable, but not improving. By his own admission, he doesn't think he'll live for very much longer. Some of the players on the Express has openly vowed to bring Sousa a championship before he dies. That inspiring quest will be on display this season, but looming on the horizon is what happens to the franchise when he's gone. His children are not on good terms with each other, and neither really has any interest in baseball. It would be a shame to a see a franchise with such a bright future collapse because of mismanagement.

Projected Record and Over/Under: 71-57 — EVEN. We should expect some regression from the Express, even if it is just a little. They will challenge the Yeomen for the title, but I think they'll fall just short again. This is a team that is well-equipped for the future and should contend for years to come, but Eboracum is just too good right now.

I first catch a limps of it as the helicopter I am riding in changes direction. An immense block of grey, like a granite boulder, riding on the water. The ensign flying on its back is the only speck of colour I can see; it proudly declares this to be a naval vessel. But it is unlike any I have ever seen before. Most naval vessels are sleek, low ships, designed to be stealthy. Even the aircraft carriers have some sleekness, some subtlety about them. But this ship, the BNAV Argo, is essentially a floating box.

Last year, the navy spent $1.5 million on converting this former civilian vessel into a military transport. A car and truck carrier in a former life, the vessel's boxy shape allows the maximum possible space inside. This gives it ample space to carry tanks, or trucks, or planes, or troops - the interior can be custom configured to suit the cargo. Today, it has been set up to suit the needs of the relief effort along the south coast of West Barunia, and I've joined the crew.

This is a joint operation. On board are men and equipment of the Army's combat engineering corps. Our job will be to get into Sheppardton and do what we can to assess the damage and begin the clean-up. Because of the flooding, the roads are underwater, so we're going around by sea. One of our tasks will also be to secure the dry part of the city against further flooding.

At about 11 am, the harbour comes into sight. The place is a mess - the smashed up carcasses of boats are piled up against the sea wall. We can't get the Argo in alongside the harbour, but the navy knew that was going to happen. The Argo has a trick up its sleeve. I am told by the captain that this particular landing has, to the best of his knowledge, never been done before. I am about to witness something extraordinary,

The Argo has been towing behind it a heavy landing craft, a hovercraft boat with a platform on top for taking a vehicle. They can take a single tank at a time across water, but we're not interested in unloading our vehicles one by one in this fashion. It would take far to long.

Instead, the captain has an audacious landing planned. Firstly, two crew are winched down to the hovercraft, which is then released from the tow ropes and driven to the rear right of the Argo (or starboard aft, as they say in the navy). Now the loading ramp, the massive door that cuts across the back corner of the ship, is lowered like a drawbridge. Carefully, the hovercraft operator positions his vehicle so that the massive ramp comes to rest on it. This is the dangerous part: one mistake here, and a vehicle could end up in the sea. For that reason, only one will make the journey. It is a "bridge builder", a sturdy extendible bridge on a vehicle platform. The vehicle slowly rumbles towards the ramp, carefully positioning itself to line up with the landing craft. As it approaches, the ramp begins to dip alarmingly, and the ramp clangs on to the landing craft's deck. It feels like the whole Argo is beginning to tip. The hovercraft loses position, and as the driver tries to readjust he slips out from underneath the ramp. The bridge tips down, but not into the water; the bridge builder is just on the edge of the balance point. Slowly the vehicle reverses, the bridge comes up, and the landing craft repositions itself. Crisis averted, and this time the bridge makes it across to the landing craft safely.

The hovercraft takes the bridge to shore, where it extends out towards the Argo's ramp. Now the Argo's pilot is the one who has to steer the ship carefully into position; not an easy task, but he is highly skilled and does it. There is still a huge amount of risk involved here, as the Argo is moving with the waves. If it moves too much, at the wrong time, it could tip a crossing vehicle into the sea.

It is a long, slow process, but eventually all the vehicles and people are on the harbour at Sheppardton, without incident. Now the clean-up begins, and the restoration and rescue of the city.

"And we have a breaking news alert coming in here on SNN Radio One, The Chief Minister of the Executive Council, Michael Bryan has submitted his resignation to President Katherine Hauge and to the Chairman of the Progressive Union. It is understood that Michael Bryan will continue as Chief Executive pro tempore until a successor can be found in the Progressive Union. In a short statement, his office has said "following the publication of the Special Senate Committee, the Chief Executive has found his position untenable and has submitted his resignation to the President. He will be making no public appearances at this time.'"

Progressive Union Leadership - The Front Runners

Ceaser Sparks - Leader of the Legislative Assembly
Age: 59 | Constituency: South West Falkland (Isle Falkland) | Nominations: 27
The former Progressive Union Chairman, Chief Whip, Foreign Executive and Deputy Chief Executive is the odds on favourite to succeed his personal friend, Michael Bryan. Boasting the best experience of any candidate and the most amount of nominations, 27, well ahead of the 5 needed to make the first ballot, Sparks is the continuity candidate which could prove both a blessing and a curse.

Elizabeth Braye - Backbencher
Age: 66 | Constituency: East Dehaye (Isle Dehaye) | Nominations: 23
The popular backbencher has soured in the polls after receiving the second highest amount of nominations, after Ceaser Sparks. Representing the left of the party, Braye has been praised for her tough stances on the rights of women and minorities and her viral speech in the Legislative Assembly on misogyny gave her much needed name recognition. Critics highlight her lack of experience and distance from the party center.

Marcus Brown - Executive Minister for Home Affairs
Age: 53 | Constituency: Stonehurst (Isle Oakhurst) | Nominations: 23
The Home Affairs minister has faced criticism in the past, but is popular amongst grass root activists. Gaining a reputation as a no-nonsense speaker has negatives however, and the gaffe prone minister is seen by many as the wrong person to win the next general election.

Kim Bennett - Chief Whip
Age: 42 | Constituency: West Henrikson Island (Henrikson Island) | Nominations: 16
The Chief Whip, and former Under Minister for Small Businesses, has managed to gain many key allies in the parliamentary party and has been credited with maintaining discipline in the razor thin majority the Progressives hold. However, Bennett is less popular amongst general party members and many are unaware of what she actually stands for.

Carlos Vaz - Executive Minister for the Armed Forces
Age: 38 | Constituency: East Wilterset (Isle Wilterset) | Nominations: 17
Popular amongst the parliamentary party, the grassroots and the general populace the only thing holding the Armed Forces Executive back is his ultra-marginal constituency which he currently holds by just 62 votes. Vaz may have to seek to change constituency if his bid will be successful, something he has ruled out up to this point.

John Grenham - Executive Minister for Finance
Age: 57 | Constituency: Port Salvador South (Isle Regio) | Nominations: 14
Despite being in one of the highest offices in the land, Grenham is lagging behind in support, partially due to his late entrance in the race, although some have questioned whether he can resonate with the general populace.

Pierre Jordan - Executive Minister for Transport and Urban Development
Age: 43 | Constituency: Chippenham Trinity West (Chippenham) | Nominations: 8
An outsider to the race, the Transport Executive points to his working class roots which, he believes, can win new voters for the party. However, his social policies are more traditional than the majority of the party - which some believe could alienate the core vote.

John Oakhurst - Backbencher
Age: 68 | Constituency: Lacock (Regis) | Nominations: 6
Senior backbencher John Oakhurst is running on a civil liberty ticket, which many claim is more at home in the libertarian Liberal Peoples' Party. A lack of experience is also worrying, but the backbencher is drawing large crowds to his hustings and has soundbites all over the internet, proclaiming his popularist message.

Victoria Del Piero - Under Minister for Rural Affairs
Age: 39 | Constituency: West Saria (Isle Saria) | Nominations: 5
By far the outsider, the young junior minister has surprised many by entering, but has support from the economic right of the party and has been gaining applause from pundits for her public speaking prowess and clarity of message.

Cosumar vs. Nova Anglicana player-by-player comparison

When it comes to soccer, Cosumar and Nova Anglicana are like brothers or kindred spirits. The two nations have been hovering around the edge of World Cup qualification together for several years now. Always seemingly among the last into the Finals or first ones left out. Always a threat to the sport's superpowers, but never quite becoming one themselves. As a result of this in-between status, both have a strong history in the Cup of Harmony that has continued in the 64th edition. Now, Cosumar and Nova Anglicana will meet for the first time in a competitive WCC match (friendlies aside). And the stakes couldn't be higher.

Cosumar has two Cup of Harmony 3rd place trophies in the trophy case back in Kaldukosic, but since his hiring new manager Gethin Ramsey has been dead-set on taking the Dragons to their first CoH Finals. His team has been magnificent, already doubling their win total in all of World Cup qualifying, looking like a completely different team. Nova Anglicana have an ambitious foreign manager of their own, however, and are sure to be Ramsey's stiffest test yet. The Lions weren't the most convincing in the group stage, but demolished Schottia and Star United States by a combined score of 10-2 in the knockouts. Do the Dragons have what it takes to knock off a red-hot, higher-ranked opponent and secure their best Cup of Harmony finish ever?

A lot of factors can shape a result. Manager, tactics, team chemistry, confidence and recent form, fan support and homefield, Lady Luck herself. Ultimately, it comes down the players though. Right? So for this Cup of Harmony Semifinal Preview, The Courier's award-winning staff of soccer analysts will compare the Dragons and Lions' projected starters at each position. At the end, we'll count them up and see who we think has the better team.

Jakk Winterfyll vs. Thomas Barnett

A difficult decision at goalkeeper, when you consider how consistently good Thomas Barnett has been for Heartwood FC. A true bulwark for one of Nova Anglicana's finest clubs, and he never uttered a complaint serving as a second-choice for the Lions over the years. He finally got his crack at an entire cycle between the posts this year and only allowed 16 goals in qualifying (just over 1 per match) ... until shipping five to Yttribia in the playoff. But even with those five added to the total, it still edges Winterfyll's mark of 22 goals. However, if you contextualize these performances and take a step back and evaluate each player's overall game and career, it is clear to us that Winterfyll is the superior goalie. Yeah he had a couple uncharacteristic blunders in qualifying, but the 22 goals can mostly be attributed to defensive and tactical failures and bad luck. The Crawford native's reflexes in goal are so sharp that they could be used as a murder weapon. He routinely takes our breath away with his anticipation and control in the most critical of moments. Just look at his clutch 89th minute save that preserved a crucial draw against Gloriax earlier in this tournament. And at age 26, he has already ascended to dizzying heights in his career by becoming the starting keeper for Exton FC (Apox) in the #1 league in the world, playing deep in UICA tournaments each year. This is a step Barnett, at age 30, probably will never take.
Winner: Cosumar

Maynard Gorham vs. Eli Barrett

Two very similar players at left back. Both fearless fullbacks with good pace and strength. Both are limited going forward. Both 26 year-olds who just established their first-choice status this cycle. Both mature players and positive dressing room presences. Both play a critical role on their team by covering for a more aggressive attacking player on the left flank. Their mutual effectiveness in this role can be directly observed by the recent successes of Mauricio Sigler and Jake Rhodes, respectively. So who's better? They might as well be identical. But we'll take Gorham because his flowing raven-colored hair just glistens too fabulously under the sunlight for Barrett to compare. Oh yeah, and he's had a hell of a year in his club career too, breaking into the first team at LigAnaia side Lesko Pavillion. Barrett is still where Gorham was a couple years ago - struggling to stand out at a struggling team (relegated FC South Bryant) in a more obscure league.
Winner: Cosumar

Arndu Farsgaard vs. Casey Bowman

Our team was split on this one, and we couldn't use club career as a tiebreaker this time as both Farsgaard and Bowman are regulars at giant Atlantian clubs (Cazadores Cathair and Trojana Condommakers). Arguably the most consistent defensive anchor for their teams, the Cosumarite and Anglican center backs are experienced performers at this level. Farsgaard's proponents pointed out his toughness and intelligent defensive play. Bowman's proponents pointed out his younger legs and better passing. In the end, we opted for the 33-year-old Cosumarite. Even though Bowman is the one still in his athletic prime, Farsgaard continues to play the full 90 minutes in almost every match (rarely looking winded). He was the rock that prevented this backline from falling apart completely throughout the nightmare qualifying campaign. His height and propensity for set-piece headers can't be discounted either.
Winner: Cosumar

Robahn Akindele vs. Aaron Bowen

Cosumar and Nova Anglicana really are twin teams, aren't they? Two more players with similar profiles as we compare their less-experienced center backs. Both Akindele and Bowen serve as something of an apprentice to their seasoned partners Farsgaard and Bowman. Akindele is something of an enigma for Cosumar at the moment. He has a lot of talent and is capable of greatness... but he can't seem to string together more than a few good performances before an abysmal one rears its head. Careless moments on his part were responsible for many goals that turned three points into one for Cosumar in qualifying. This inconsistency plagued him a little in Buyan too. To his credit, he was a lot better last season with Viztourzys and has shown better in the Cup of Harmony so far, but no one who follows Cosumar completely trusts him yet. Bowen gets the nod as the more reliable defender. He had fewer than 15 caps at the start of qualifying, but has plugged into the Anglican backline perfectly and played with the confidence and poise of a veteran. Montreal Koreana have a gem on their hands.
Winner: Nova Anglicana

Tomasso Tenebrosa vs. Bradley Lancaster

The Cosumarite media (ourselves included, admittedly) are in love with Tomassa Tenebrosa right now. The pacey young right back with the marketable smile has exploded onto the scene in 1002, exceeding expectations to help Ramusok United win the Harlighet Ligan in his first year there and earning his first senior caps. As this whirlwind of success continues, Tenebrosa now appears to be a key cog to Cosumar's future despite being a fringe NT prospect a year or two ago. He provided the cross that set-up Vareza Na'Noni's winner against Stvoto Latoli in the Round of 16. As much as we wanted to add to the Tenebrosa hype train by selecting him, a quick peek through our "neutral observer" glasses revealed that Bradley Lancaster is still a no-brainer as the better fullback. The Trojana Condommakers FC man has been bombing down the right side for the Lions for over a decade - since World Cup 67. Sure he's slowed down a bit at age 33, but Lancaster still presents a very real danger going forward with his refined technical skill and nose for the right pass. He's a solid defender and two-way players as well - something he has in common with Tenebrosa. If the young Cosumarite continues his rate of development, he could be able to match the phenomenal career of this Nova Anglicana icon eventually.
Winner: Nova Anglicana

Mauricio Sigler vs. Jake Rhodes

Jake Rhodes gave the Lions a big boost in qualifying from the left wing. This kid can flat-out fly and he can score in a multitude of ways. Do yourself a favor and look up his thunderous long-rage strike against Yttribia on YouTube. He plays his club ball at Atlantea Hurricanes in the Taeshan Premier League. Yeah yeah, the Hurricanes have been chronic underachievers lately, but Rhodes is a bright spot for their future. Rhodes should already be quite familiar with his Cosumarite counterpart, as Mauricio Sigler plays in the very same city for champions Real Atlantea. Taeshani fans will get a piece of the Atlantea derby when they turn this game on tomorrow. The 24-year-old Anglican's crossing and tactical awareness aren't the best, but he is rapidly developing. Mauricio Sigler is the opposite - a phenomenal passer (3 assists in the Cup of Harmony already) who struggles with finishing at times. Even though Sigler plays for the more prestigious club, if you could only have one of them on your team to win one game (when one goal could make all the difference), Rhodes would be your best bet. He's a year older and has a little more international experience than the 23-year-old Sigler, who didn't have a single NT start to his name before Quebec.
Winner: Nova Anglicana

Vareza Na'Noni vs. Cesar Martinez

Seriously, are Nova Anglicana copying our roster? Both sides also have a grizzled 30-year-old ball winner in midfield who has bared a pivotal defensive responsibility for years and years. As the Atlas holding up their teams' attacks, Na'Noni and Martinez have both been godsends in this role for Ramsey/Crowley and Sook Jin Lee. But in the end, Na'Noni is the more accomplished and experienced player in every respect. Na'Noni made his name at Red Star Severny when the Polarian league was the world's best, and now plays in another top-level league in Farfadillis. The blue-skinned badboy is just as fearsome of a defender as Martinez, offers more going forward and is more skilled on the ball, giving Gethin Ramsey the flexibility to play him anywhere in the midfield or at fullback. Arguably the greatest Vloo footballer in history, he is also an iconic figure in Cosumar whose name will live on in the pages of the history of the Vloo people.
Winner: Cosumar

Pablo Corderro vs. Kyle Fleming

This might've been a different story if usual starter Darwyn Lucassen hadn't earned a one-game suspension by picking up consecutive yellow cards against Stvoto Latoli and Electrum. But Crisisbless United man Pablo Corderro is more than capable of filling in. His presence creates an intriguing battle of former Cassandra City teammates in central midfield. Fleming and Corderro played together in Cassandra for two seasons in 998 and 999 when Fleming was new to Cosumarite soccer. Their midfield partnership was an effective one - guiding the Reds to Globe Cup finishes both years. Yet each improved a great deal after going their separate ways. Fleming went on to become the captain of Cassandra City and led them to their first championship. Pablo Corderro established himself as a quality performer in Nephara. Now here they are, sharing a pitch again at age 33. Unlike most of these match-ups, we can compare their performances directly. Fleming was the better player in Cassandra, doubling Corderro's assist and goal totals in fewer matches those two years, also earning Foreign Player of the Year honors. Fleming's emergence was part of the reason City considered Corderro expendable and allowed him to walk away on free transfer. Fleming is also the more accomplished international, regularly featuring for Nova Anglicana since World Cup 67. Corderro has been an effective rotation player for Cosumar over the last couple cycles, and his gentle passing touch is the envy of the squad, but anyone who has followed the Harlighet Ligan over the last five years knows just how influential and well-rounded Fleming is. Both orchestrate the attack with savvy, but Fleming is the more complete and dynamic player. In what might be his last major tournament as a starter, his leadership could not be more important either.
Winner: Nova Anglicana

Ole Öhman vs. Chris Parker

Right midfield is the easiest decision of the bunch. Hmm let's see... a guy who makes Best XI in one of the top leagues in the world and just helped his club win the Globe Cup and Esportivan championship, or, a decent player from a middling team in the Anglican domestic league who has been one of his country's most anonymous performers so far? Öhman and Parker are both good distributors from the wing, but Öhman has that extra bit of class that sets him apart. I couldn't stop replaying the gif of his assist on Engström's game-winner in the quarterfinal last week. Just stop and admire that filthy feint to put the fullback on his heels. Then watch him slice that inch-perfect ball into the path of Engström, nutmegging another defender in the process. A joy to watch. He's also more of a threat to score, as evidenced by his five goals in qualifying. In a dreary WC campaign that saw even our most consistent players (like Engström and Winterfyll) struggle to find form, Öhman was often the only Dragon on the pitch that inspired the fans to keep cheering.
Winner: Cosumar

Anders Engström vs. Emmanuel Moga

Ah, the most important battle: that of the #10s. By now you've probably noticed the red text below. Before you grab your pitchforks and burn down our office for treason, please please hear us out. We love Andy. Really, we do. He's fantastic. One of the top ten Cosumarites ever to play the game. No doubt. What he has done for our domestic league by playing his entire career at home cannot be measured. But as much as it pains us to admit it...the prolific Emmanuel Moga, also 28, is ever so slightly better. Nova Anglicana's most creative and technical playmaker by a wide margin, he is a bona-fide 9/10 world-class player who lifts up his 7/10 surrounding cast. Engström has a similar effect for the Dragons, but is more of a 8.75/10 star. Moga has been one of the faces of the Buyan Football League for much of his career, first with Sparta Torspeda and now with titans Blau-Weiss Pallstadt (where he is teammate to our own Tae Woo Miyori). He has shined on big stages like the World Cup Finals and deep in the Champions Cup, feats that still remain empty on Engström's resume.
Winner: Nova Anglicana

Ace Newman vs. Chris Hodges

Welp, it's a toss-up. If you've been keeping track through this article, you'd count five wins for each team so far. It all comes down to the star center-forwards, Ace Newman and Chris Hodges. Funnily enough, this mirrors real life - when a moment of brilliance from one striker can be all that sets two sides apart. A strong case could be made for either player, but let's start by comparing their impact in the Harlighet Ligan. Most Cosumarites will be familiar with Hodges from the Anglican's time at FC Kaldukosic over the last two seasons. Newman, of course, was a superstar at Cassandra City. Hodges was phenomenal in his first season, scoring 19 goals, but receded a bit in his sophomore season with only 11 goals. 30 goals in two seasons is nothing to scoff at, and he's capable of more, but Newman's scoring record was on a whole other level. In seven seasons with the Reds, Newman made 191 appearances and scored 109 goals. He also earned MVP honors and a Golden Boot, whereas Hodges hasn't yet been able to lift FC Kal out of the mid-table crowd. Ace Newman now plays for Urbanista, one of the better teams in Apox, and scored 13 goals in his rookie ANL season. He seems to still be a player on the rise. Hodges, at age 30, has likely peaked already. The Hodges fans on our panel argued that he has more goals for Nova Anglicana than Newman has for Cosumar, and that Newman has had too many high-and-lows in his international career to win this one. But this is all about talent. He hasn't been as great for country as he has for club, but we feel there is no question that Newman is the more versatile, skilled player with the higher ceiling.
Winner: Cosumar

Cosumar - 6
Nova Anglicana - 5

Based on the talent in the starting squads, we are going to the Final by the skin of our teeth! You heard it here first. With Harlighet Ligan fan-favorites like Jimmy Kelly, Brendan McBride, Fleming and Hodges suiting up for Nova Anglicana, the Lions are sure to have the support of Cosumarites everywhere should they advance in our stead. It should be a great match - good luck to both sides.

There's no cutoff pun here. I just like the video.

SEMI-FINAL RESULT:
Barunia 6–6 The Sarian (6–6 AET) (2–3 pen.)

Congratulations to The Sarian; consolation prize for Barunia is that you get to stay in Krytenia for the third place match.

NABL Western Division Preview

In the following days, we're going to be doing extensive previews of the twelve teams of the NABL, division by division. We're continuing with the Western Division and our projected 1st place finisher, the Eboracum Yeomen. All of our numbers are produced in-house by our statistics team.

Starting Lineup
OrderNameBatsSlash LinewRC+PA

Starting Rotation

2RHP Jeff Schweitzer3.493.771677.53.0
3LHP Bruce Hale3.744.001667.13.5
4LHP Perry Collins4.004.231617.03.9
5RHP Todd Stratton4.214.631606.12.7

Biggest Projected Hitter/Pitcher Improvement: Derrick Wheeler, 1.7 WAR/500 PA; Perry Collins 1.3 WAR/175 IP

Biggest Projected Hitter/Pitcher Decline: Ryan Watson, minus-1.5 WAR/500 PA; Don Rhodes, minus-1.7 WAR/175 IP

Hitter With Most Projected Days Missed: Luke Greene, 19 days

Highest Projected Starting Pitcher DL Probability: Nate Freeman, 23 percent

Best Offseason Move: Inking veteran SP Todd Stratton to a 2yr/AP 3.8 million deal. The 32 year-old Stratton isn't going to put up an outstanding ERA or prolific strikeout totals, but he eats innings and limits walks. That's nothing to sneeze at from a #5 starter. He makes an already good veteran Yeomen rotation even better.

Worst Offseason Move: They traded the wrong player this offseason. They shipped off their veteran shortstop Darrell Duncan to Mancunium in order to allow 24 year-old prospect Matt Graves his shot at the big leagues. Graves will hit better than Duncan, but his defense is definitely weaker and the return for Duncan, pitching prospect Charlie Cook, was underwhelming. The player they should have traded was veteran left-hander Don Rhodes. The 37 year-old Rhodes has become almost a LOOGY, with nearly 80% of the batters he faced being lefties. Rhodes' value this year will not match the AP 2 million left on his contract, and his stats made him a good trade candidate. I don't know that it will cost them all that much in the short term, but if they continue to make this sort of mistake, it will burn them in the long run.

Greatest Team Strength: The veteran starting rotation. All of the Yeomen's starters are between 30 and 35, and all have between 8 and 12 years of big league experience. This rotation was a huge reason why the Yeomen only allowed twenty-two runs in ten games in their run to the Unity Cup semifinals, and less than four a game in the regular season. The defense behind them will be a little worse with the loss of Duncan to the Pilots, but they still project to be one of the best in the league.

Greatest Team Weakness: Is there a weakness with this team? They have won the Western Division twice in a row now, and their mix of young and old, a strong rotation and a strong lineup, makes them better than anyone else in the division. If you want to highlight areas where they could improve, point to Derrick Wheeler's defense in left and Matt Graves' defense at short, as well as the bullpen. But these shortcomings aren't as glaring as those of other teams, and they shouldn't stop the Yeomen from succeeding.

Player We Can’t Wait to Watch: René Martel. The young second baseman is in another world defensively. He's mastered the backhand glove flip to second, regularly makes plays up the middle, and has both a great arm and range. He's basically a shortstop defensively, but his value at second is so much more than anyone else on the Yeomen that they continue to play him there.

Noteworthy Miscellaneous Stat: No team in the league has a better projected combination of rotation innings pitched and ERA than the Yeomen. They project to be tied for third (just barely) in terms of innings pitched, averaging over 166 innings per starter, and no team has a better projected rotation ERA, at a shade under 3.70. This is a byproduct of having the type of experienced and strong rotation that the Yeomen have. Other teams may be better in some areas, but it looks like the Yeomen have the best rotation in the league.

Off-Field Story Line: The two division crowns have increased the already large Yeomen revenue stream. Merchandise, playoff and international ticketing sales, and much more have made the Yeomen the richest team in the league. The question is, what are they going to do with all that cash? Is owner Karl Hardy simply going to pocket most of it? Will we see it in the form of big raises for executives? Will they pour it into their payroll and try to buy championships like teams in the United States' Major League Baseball? For what it's worth, I'd put it into scouting, player development, facilities, and analytics. The Yeomen have the chance to have the best overall organization, not just big league club, in the NABL. It would be a shame to see them miss this opportunity.

Projected Record and Over/Under: 71-57 — OVER. The loss' of Duncan's defense is more or less offset by Graves' contribution to the offense, and Derrick Wheeler projects to take a big step forward in his sophomore season. With Nate Freeman, the best pitcher in the league, anchoring the veteran rotation, the Yeomen look pretty well set to take their third straight division crown. That's not to say that it won't be an exciting chase, but the title will be returning to Eboracum again this year.

Well you all know how I'm a huge Birdy fan. Two days ago, right after CoH cutoff, I found the official audio version of Let it all go that'll be on RHODES' album later this year. So I clicked the link off her Insta account and started listen to it for 1,093 times....

Oh, what the heck. Semifinals cutoff.

Cosumar "Vanquishers" flip the script, win their way to Grand Final

The third time is the charm for Cosumar in the Cup of Harmony semifinals. After two losses at this junction of the competition in Cup of Harmony 45 and 62, the Cosumarites have finally broken through into the Multiverse's biggest championship match outside of the World Cup Finals. As they celebrated on the pitch at the final whistle, Cosumarite supporters chanted a hymn never before heard in centuries of our history in the sport: one hailing their beloved Dragons Vanquishers.

Ever since the Fiefdom Soccer Federation swapped Farris Crowley for Nepharim wonder-worker Gethin Ramsey, the Cosumarite national team has taken on a whole new identity. New style of play, new confidence, new records being set. The transformation has been so sudden and so stark that the team has also gained a new nickname as well. Vanquishers.

And you know what? It actually perfectly fits the way Cosumar have played since the end of World Cup qualifying. The "before and after" numbers speak for themselves.

World Cup 72 Cycle
Under Crowley: 2 wins, 10 draws, 6 losses in 18 matches. 3 clean sheets.
Under Ramsey: 6 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses in 7 matches. 4 clean sheets. 1 WCC medal (Gold or Silver TBD).

The term first surfaced when Stvoto Latoli manager Brendan al Tameer referred to Cosumar as his side's "vanquisher" following our Round of 16 showdown. Ramsey was apprently amused by the imagery and used it as his official "theme" of the tournament when addressing his players. After our 1-0 defeat of Electrum in the quarterfinals, this Ramsey quote went viral in Cosumar.

"I've been telling the team before every match: we are vanquishers. That's what we do. We vanquish every new opponent that steps up to face us. We cut them down until there aren't any left. We don't think about who they are or what they're ranked, we just set our mind to playing better and fighting harder than them, and we vanquish them. If we keep this mentality, the Fiefdom of Cosumar will be very tough to beat. Vanquishers don't always win, but they keep fighting and fighting to prove their strength until they are forced down by someone truly stronger."

Fans then embraced the "Vanquishers" identity as much as the players. Infamous Cosumarite supporters' group Heathen Front introduced a new "Vanquishers" chant in the semifinal against Nova Anglicana set to the tune of "The New Spirit" by Cosumarite gothic rock band Mors Incarnati. Heathen Front, known for causing unrest while visiting The Holy Empire a few years ago, are the unofficial gatekeepers of all our chants and are sticklers for maintaining historical accuracy. The fact that they introduced a new song for the first time in 16 years is a testament to how much this Cup of Harmony run means to the Cosumarite people.

"We are vanquishers, vanquishers
We march on, fight through the night and 'morn
We are vanquishers, vanquishers
We fight on, send you up to your God(s)

These now-hallowed words echoed through the Quebecois stadium as the Vanquishers celebrated at midfield and clapped along. They weren't dominant against Nova Anglicana - their only goal came in the first eight minutes after Aaron Bowen mishandled a long Maynard Gorham throw-in and allowed Ole Öhman to slot home a half-volley from 14 yards with relative ease. Nova Anglicana pressed hard to equalize for 80 minutes, but Cosumar found a way to get the job done (thanks to Jakk Winterfyll brilliance, a blown chance on open net by Chris Hodges, and a shift to an unusually defensive 5-4-1 in the 78th minute) and send a third consecutive team packing home by a score of 1-0.

Cosumar
9 shots (3 on-target)
49% Possession, 80% pass accuracy
8 corners, 2 offsides
14 fouls, 1 card (Öhman)
Nova Anglicana
13 shots (4 on-target)
51% Possession, 83% pass accuracy
9 corners, 3 offsides
11 fouls, 2 yellow cards (Lancaster, Rhodes)
Cosumar - 1

Nova Anglicana - 0

One more duel now lies before our Dragons/Vanquishers. The Sarian. The second-highest ranked team in the tournament, coming off an electrifying six-goal win over Barunia in the Krytenian semifinal. Led by another Nepharim manager Gareth Bournemouth and talents such as Louie Nittenpepper, William Peters, Methuselah Meeuwessen and Simon Shaw.

Either way, Cosumar will attain its highest ever finish in a WCC tournament. Against such a daunting opponent, it would be easy to take 2nd and be satisfied. Perhaps the team might've done that in past cycles. But they are Vanquishers now, and Vanquishers fight through the night and 'morn.

Can Cosumar vanquish their strongest opponent yet? If you can't travel to Montreal to support them in person, be sure tune in to CSBN at 7 p.m. Cosumar-time tonight to find out and witness history.

It was a romp. No other way to splice it. Despite being 28 spots below The Sarian (#20) in the rankings, Cosumar ran rampant in the Cup of Harmony Final, dealing the Bustards a 5-1 humiliation, their second-worst defeat in national history.

The Dragons have never been a side historically known for their good fortune, but last night they left nothing to chance - they created their own luck. Mauricio Sigler's spine-tingling double, Vareza Na'Noni's close-range clean-up, Tomasso Tenebrosa's diving header won with pure desperation that sent supporters behind goal into orbit - the only thing gifted to them was the penalty just after the break when Ole Öhman was brought down just outside the box by Tiras Bermudez. The second yellow and dismissal was justified - but the tripping foul clearly took place before Öhman's run crossed over the line. Nevertheless, Captain Andy buried the spot kick with aplomb to make it 3-1 and the Dragons proceeded to feast upon an undermanned Sarian defense.

With the spirit the Vanquishers were exhibiting and the near-apathy of The Sarian after going down 2-0, a result along the lines of 5-1 was destined with or without the erroneous penalty. Let it not detract from the splendor of this occasion. This match was what international football finals are all about. A stadium split in two by color, blue on one half and green on the other, and a thrillingly intense atmosphere that seemed to collectively tense in anticipation for every play.

Sigler's second goal in the 74th minute was a classic that embodied how the game will be remembered by both sides. Sigler passed the ball to Lucassen on the right, who promptly played it back to Sigler on-the-run towards the top of the box. Sigler dribbled past Methuselah Meeuwessen like he was a statue before being held up 20 yards from goal by defender William Peters. Sigler turned his back to Peters with his left foot holding out the ball in front of him. He juked towards his right, then twisted back around the other way to his left with a sneaky touch in an effort to create a fleeting window on-goal around Peters. The Beckwith City veteran fell for it only for the briefest of seconds, but Sigler was able to shoot through Peters' legs before the defender could react. Sigler wasn't able to get any power behind it, but the ball's placement was calculated to the millimeter. Sarian defenders in the box and Matthieu Soleil himself could only turn their heads and watch in agony as the ball slowly rolled towards the post and snaked in off the inside edge. Sigler stood motionless from the spot, and saluted to the ecstatic Cosumarite half of the stadium before holding up a taunting five fingers towards the Sarian half. Five to freaking one in favor of Cosumar. Who would've thought.

In a touching display of respect for those who laid the groundwork prior to his arrival, Gethin Ramsey made a triple substitution in the 79th minute to let veterans Sur Arora, Paaron Petrov and Pablo Corderro close out the final ten minutes of the Grand Final in what might be the final chapter in each of their illustrious Cosumar careers.

Arora, the legendary striker who has donned the Cosumarite colors since World Cup 63 and scored over 100 goals, in particular seemed to really savor the moment. He looked wistful trotting out onto the pitch, recalling all the years of work it took to get to this moment, but Arora was radiating pure euphoria by the time the final whistle arrived.

He was the first to react, immediately running to Petrov with his arms in the air and tackling his Fevelian friend to the ground in embrace. The rest of the Cosumarites took the cue and dogpiled on and around the two old dogs. They arrived one after another, sprinting in and diving into the fray, clamoring in excitement and completely oblivious to the grass stains they were accumulating or the crowd noise or the dejected Sarians looking on. It was pure magic in Montreal.

Arora eventually emerged from the epicenter of the pile. As teammates and coaches calmed down (a little bit) and began hugging and hi-fiving in a more orderly fashion, Arora sat on the ground taking in the spectacle around him. He looked completely...satisfied. Who could've dreamed up this fairy-tale ending after the nightmare that was World Cup 72 qualifying?

"Being 36, I'm not exactly the fresh spring chicken of the squad anymore. I don't know how many more times, if any, I will wear this shirt after today. "When I look back down the road, I'm sure it will sting that I never achieved my goal of taking Cosumar to a World Cup. But right now, this right here feels damn GOOD," Arora said at the post-match press conference, patting the trophy in his lap with a grin. "Between winning the Premiership with Crisisbless and now rewriting history in the Cup of Harmony, it has been the most amazing year of my life and I'm so thankful for the opportunities to leave such a swansong I can be proud of."

The rest of the Cosumar Vanquishers, drenched in wine from their frenzied dressing room celebrations and with gold medals now around their necks, took turns holding (and kissing) the Cup and answering questions. Jakk Winterfyll stroked his Golden Glove award with a smile, whilst breakout 23-year-old star Mauricio Sigler held his Golden Ball MVP award like a foreign object, in complete disbelief.

Eventually, the press conference came to an end and the team trudged out of the stadium back to the team bus. Thousands of Cosumarite supporters, who had been waiting on the street for hours after the match, sent their victorious boys off to their hotel in rousing fashion with chorus after chorus of their new favorite song. We are vanquishers, vanquishers...

Somewhere, Farris Crowley was wiping warm tears of pride and joy off his pockmarked cheeks.
