Azurlavai Fighters Breach Ossorian Air Defense Zone
Tensions increase along the Southern Approaches

A flight of four Azurlavai MiG-29K naval fighters were intercepted by four F-39 Raven fighters of the Royal Ossorian Air Force following a breach of the Ossorian Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) around mid-morning today, according to a spokesman for the Office of Military Affairs.

The Azurlavai fighters ignored repeated warnings by the Royal Ossorian Strategic Defense Force to turn back before being confronted by pilots of the 9th 'Dragon Knights' Tactical Fighter Squadron. The Azurlavai aircraft withdrew back to their carrier outside the Ossorian Maritime Security Zone without further incident before they risked entering Ossorian airspace. Cruiser Squadron 2 of the Royal Ossorian Navy confirmed their return and continues to shadow the Azurlavai naval task force as it operates outside of the Ossorian security perimeter.

This encroachment on Ossorian airspace comes as the latest in a string of assertive moves by the Azurlavai government, though it is the most aggressive move thus far aimed directly at the High Kingdom.

"This incident is likely an effort by the Azurlavai to 'convince' Ossoria to remain neutral in their conflicts and disputes with the VDR and Shalum", said a source within the Office of Foreign Affairs, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "They don't want to have to fight a war with us at the same time as their conflicts with their traditional rivals on the Continent are flaring up again."

A spokesman for the Chiefs of Staff Committee assured the public that all proper efforts were being undertaken to ensure the High Kingdom's security and that the appropriate measures were being put in place to deal with any new threats from the Continent.

ARMAVIR, Nalaya - Just as things in the north have been heating up, the south is starting fires of its own. Earlier this morning, a tribal meeting was announced among the Nava'ai, scheduled to be held at the Hin K'are Hotel in Armavir in light of the recent withdrawal of the Dread Wolf from a second round of negotiations aimed towards re-establishing ethic and religious mediation. The conference is expected to be held within the next two weeks due to the pressing nature of the issue. However, it is likely that this meeting is a prelude not to peaceful pleas to the Dread Wolf's better nature, and is instead the first step towards the mobilization of tribal forces not affiliated with the federal government. If this is true, one can expect the Dread Wolf not to stand idly by.

And where is the Mak'ur Quarval-sharess? Limited reports from Dyvynasshar report that the religious leader has sealed herself into ceremonial seclusion, a time of purification that the faithful of L'i'dol refer to as Draevval d'Roesor. This act signifies a mourning period that has begun for an unclear reason. Speculation suggests that this may be a preemptive prayer for the souls who will die in battle or it may be at a more personal loss of the Dread Wolf's in these recent days. Whatever the occasion, the ranks of the devout have joined her in her prayers. Offerings have been left at the multitude of shrines throughout the border regions and even here in Armavir. These actions were protested by the Nava'ai and the federal police have spent most of the last few days separating the faithful of L'i'dol and their unwelcome hecklers.

Perhaps because of this growing tension in Armavir, Sevan has made no mention of supporting a side in the northern conflicts. For all intents and purposes, the Avangardn will be remaining out of that fight as they gear up to contain one at home. There is little word out of the Dominion as to where the three Vatani warlords who remain will fall, but current estimations place them split among the sides. If a spark falls into this powderkeg, the chaos that promises to follow could be the largest internal strife since the Unification. It would certainly have the power to sunder the country again. Let us hope as a country that doves win out over hawks or, if not, that the Protector is prepared for what will then come. •
Do you know, my son, with what little understanding the world is ruled?

Obituary: former justice minister Benedita Mendonça Ferreira dead at 95
12 June 2015 Last updated 7:41 PM

We would like to thank the family of Benedita Mendonça Ferreira for graciously granting permission to use gendered pronouns.

Benedita Mendonça Ferreira, who formerly served as Gylias' Minister of Justice, Minister of Equality and Integration, and Attorney General between 1958 and 1982, has died this morning the age of 95.

According to a statement by her family, the death was due to natural causes. A private funeral and a public memorial service will be held next week.

As a leading member of Darnan Cyras' cabinet, she leaves behind a legacy of unprecedented and highly-admired change and reform in Gylian society. A firm believer in the ideals
of social justice and the "neutral state", she helped abolish censorship, secularise the state, launch successful campaigns against discrimination, and was a key contributor to the drafting and adoption of Gylias' current constitution and civil code.

Born on 11 May 1920 in Kyman, Benedita Mendonça Ferreira was the daughter of Andréia Mendonça and Leopoldo Hélder Ferreira. Her childhood was marked by the same poverty and precarity as numerous other Gylians under Xevdenite rule. Benefiting from certain family connections, she was able to attend the city's Saint Gerald School, an experience she expressed profound distaste for later in life. She subsequently studied law at the Queen's University of Kyman in her twenties, and passed the bar exam in 1943 on her second try. This achievement made her one of the few Gylians in Kyman qualified to practice law.

Nicknamed "Beni" in childhood, she revolted against what she saw as the repressive atmosphere of Xevden's institutions from an early age, often getting into trouble with her school and authorities. As a lawyer, she worked almost exclusively on cases involving defending Gylian clients against segregationist legislation, or public advocacy. Despite living in near-poverty and frequently having to rely on donations or scavenging for food, she charged reduced fees or often waived them entirely for the sake of her clients. Her legal work led her to develop a reputation as one of the most prominent and radical spokespersons for the Gylian community of Kyman, which in turn made her the target of harassment by the authorities.

Benedita's sole venture into Xevden politics, an attempt to run for parliament in 1939 on behalf of the Liberal Socialist Reform Party (LSRP), was a failure. The party was driven underground by pressure from the secret police, and she was herself arrested and detained for two weeks in 1944. The outbreak of the Liberation War became a natural home for her radicalised political beliefs, and she was recruited into the People's Army's cause, serving as a delegate at the Congress of the People which marked the foundation of the Democratic Communist Party (DCP). Elected Deputy Secretary of the party, Benedita forged a close working relationship with Darnan Cyras, the two being primarily responsible for establishing the party's programme and functioning principles. As Deputy Secretary, she displayed a remarkable talent for administration, and became popular among the membership for her fierce advocacy of social justice, a trait that often drove her to heated arguments and insults against the DCP's authoritarian Stalinist faction. Her and Darnan Cyras' moderating influence on the party, uncompromising anti-authoritarianism, and ability to presciently recruit and nurture future cabinet ministers, helped attract growing support to their faction, which proved vital for its ultimate victory in the Liberation War.

At the swearing-in of the Darnan government, Benedita was appointed to three portfolios simultaneously: Minister of Justice, Minister of Equality and Integration, and Attorney General. Even amidst the difficulties of the provisional government's rationing period, she began her term with immediate action, canceling all previous Xevdenite legislation including the highly unpopular status of Roman Catholicism as an official religion. She reorganised the Gylian legal system on the basis of civil law, placed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the heart of her legal reforms, and successfully ensured legal order during the popular consultation period. After the new constitution was approved by an overwhelming majority of Gylian voters, she declared, "Two hundred and fifty-seven years of orphanhood have now ended. At long last, Gylias has returned to the warm embrace of civilisation."

The subsequent years of prosperity and high economic growth allowed the Darnan government to enact one of the most wide-ranging projects of sweeping change to a Tyranian nation. From her posts as justice and equality minister, Benedita put herself at the forefront of the effort to erase the legacy of Xevdenite rule under an avalanche of progressive, socially liberal legislation and action. Censorship and socially conservative legislation were abolished, family law was liberalised, abortion, prostitution, non-heterosexual acts, no-fault divorce and euthanasia were legalised. The government established legal aid, reduced the age of majority to 13, introduced protections for minority and regional languages, state aid and legal procedures to help immigrants. Most significantly, stringent anti-discrimination laws were adopted, and the legal codes of Gylias were completely revised, written in gender-neutral language and affecting all "residents" instead of "citizens".

Throughout her life, she would refer to the Discrimination Act 1963 as "my most important legislative achievement". The act's far-reaching provisions criminalised discrimination on the basis of several "arbitrary" distinctions, including but not limited to ethnicity, race, sex, gender, sexuality, and native language. It also helped codify the principle of "positive action", stipulating that legislation solely for the benefit of a particular group could only be introduced as a means to redress inequalities between individuals in any and all areas of Gylian life, and never to strengthen or participate in it.

As Attorney General, Benedita vigorously fulfiled her role as the federal government's chief representative in court, and exploited every available opportunity to take on court cases related to discrimination and advance the cause of equality. Her intelligence and eloquence won her plaudits in court, but her critics described her as too zealous and needlessly abrasive. Her propensity towards firebrand speeches and invective against the opponents of her social reforms drew the criticism that she seemed eager to take particular cases to make examples out of the respective defendants by beating them into submission. Similarly, her antipathy towards Abrahamic religions and devotion to the principle of secularism led to complaints that she could on occasion be gratuituously insensitive and prone to running roughshod over traditional practices for the sake of modernisation. Her part in the Yoav Goren v. Avram Baruch case of 1971 is the most well-known instance of failure in this regard, causing the exodus of Gylias' Jewish and Muslim minorities, but she remained unapologetic about her role for the rest of her career. In a famous interview in 1980, she defended herself by stating, "If I'm given a choice between throwing the Constitution under a bus to preserve a small group, or throwing a small group under a bus to preserve the Constitution, I'd do the latter every time."

Following the inconclusive 1976 election, Benedita continued in her roles as part of Aaén Janez's cabinet, but she quickly soured on their more authoritarian and micromanaging approach to governance. She refused to become the General Secretary of the DCP on repeated occasions, partly out of bereavement at Aliska Géza's death. The move would weaken her reputation for a time as critics faulted her for not doing enough to prevent the internal conflicts that weakened the DCP and the Progressive Alliance during the 1980s. She tenaciously clung to office as an attempt to restrain Aaén Janez from pursuing an agenda she condemned as destructive to Gylian democracy. By the time she resigned on 15 June 1982 with a blistering public statement, she was the last remaining cabinet minister who had been serving continuously since independence.

Benedita briefly returned as Attorney General in Filomena Pinheiro's cabinet, aiming to contribute to the process of "national reconciliation" after Aaén Janez's ouster. However, she declined an offer from Mathilde Véira to continue in the post, arguing that she had done all she could and that the cabinet now needed newer people to continue building on the foundations she had helped lay. She withdrew from active political and public life afterwards, retiring to Kyman with her family. At times, she recounted her time in office for historians and political researchers, or made infrequent public declarations when she felt subsequent governments were acting inappropriately.

Her spouse of 70 years, Fernando Ferreira, died in October 2012. In her eulogy, she praised him as "a remarkable person and the love of my life", crediting him for "encouraging and sustaining me and our children, giving us strength and reassurance for a struggle without end against the evils that blight the world."

Benedita Mendonça Ferreira is survived by her three children, Eulália, Jacinta, and Graciano.

Riots Over Botched Attack Spread Across the Nation!

Image

Weeks ago, when the Stormtrooper attack on Iron Island went forward, officials refused to release the actual casualty numbers from the UR Haer, Krigsmarine and Stormtroopers, keeping the public in the dark for much longer than anyone saw as necessary. Last week, however, said casualties were leaked by an independent source and confirmed when the families of soldiers called up their loves ones. Though many servicemen and women in the Armed Forces refused to break their orders of silence, several did and many other families could not reach their loved ones, confirming suspicious far more than anything an individual soldier or sailor said. Enraged by this massive loss of life for little gain, riots have spread across Azurlavai as each of the states deal with the mourning in their own way, asking the same questions. Why did the attack go forward, why had it failed and why conceal this information from the public for so long? Supreme Chairman Karlos Vocht, on the steps of the Council Haus in Gallagher state yesterday, had this to say:

"It is my heart that grieves with you. I know your loss is worse than my own, for you have lost sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, loved ones and friends. I have lost brave soldiers who followed their commands and went forth at my behest. I take responsibility for the attack itself, and its means were for pure political reasons. Had the operation succeeded, the current diplomatic crisis we have faced the last two months over disputed territories would most likely have been resolved through pressure, and the loss of life would have been titanically much lower. As it was, a regiment of inexperienced, fresh-faced recruits were sent instead of much better equipped and hardened troops to back the Stormtroopers, and as a result, the losses on our end and in the political field had been horrific. Blame not the soldiers who died in Kaiserweth. Blame not the generals who sent them in. I am responsible for their lives, and thus I take responsibility for their deaths. I thank you for your strength and understanding patience."

While domestic violence swung down following Chairman Vocht's address, the fact of the matter is that, with so many casualties and our nation poised on the brink of full-out war, is the United Republic really ready to face off with Imperial Shalum once more? In light of this loss, we can only hope that the military decides to take this issue seriously, though we all know that victory against such a foe would, of course, be inevitable.

SLP final day action
Marrian McFadden reports

The SPL finally concluded this weekend, with an action packed round of fixtures, which saw a dramatic end to the season. After a series of slip ups from long time league leaders the New Belfast Warriors, Handon United had found themselves in top spot going into the final match. With their last game against mid-table side NBB, and the Warriors travelling to Soessch they must have felt the title was in the bag, however these things aren't always meant to be.

The Warriors hadn't won the title in fifteen years and after working hard to get themselves into a strong position, they weren’t going to give it up without a fight. They took the lead over Soessch in the 15th minute, after a good exchange between Elisa Rivera and Craig O'Maramy. The Christopheran midfielder Rivera, played one of her trademark twenty meter passes, picking out the Schottic internationalist. Rivera has had a good second half to the season, taking over from Jon Fotan after the player's 16 million move to Fadrön Flight in Taeshan. O'Maramy then used his pace going forward to the leave the Soessch defence at sixes and sevens. Getting the by-line the little winger crossed the ball into the box for top goal scorer Ivan Archic to slide the ball home.

For a side, which could still mathematically win the title at this stage, Soessch didn't put up enough of a fight because they found themselves two goals down on the stroke of half time. This time it was Scott Copper, who managed to get free of the last defender to score his second goal for the club.

Today was always going to be a tall ask for Warriors, as they also were reliant on their city neighbours defeating the rock solid Handon United at Harbour Hill. Their prayers however, were answered when Sam Saxon's through ball found Jack Lamb through on goal. The striker sent the ball past Schottia Keeper Lucas D'Araby to give NBB a famous win. Despite applying huge amounts of pressure, United were unable to get the goal, which would have saved their season, meaning the Warriors were crowned champions.

There will be celebrations in the streets of New Belfast tonight as the side finally managed to recreate the success that they enjoyed in the 90s. Manager Jane Gullie will be in high demand now, with many speculating that she could take over from Barry Gorman in the Schottia post, should the team fail to qualify for the World Cup.

A Naval Review: The ‘ISN Guardian’
The Lead Ship of the Shalumite Destroyer Fleet

Image

The ‘ISN Guardian’ represents the lead ship of her four-strong class of surface fighting vessels of the Imperial Shalumite Navy - and is generally regarded as one of the most powerful destroyer class ships anywhere in the region. The vessel is a part of the modern Type 45-class and charged with a multi-role existence in service to the fleet as a guided-missile destroyer, primarily tasked with providing air defense from incoming threats such as aircraft or cruise missiles. As such, ‘ISN Guardian’ is comparable in mission scope and combat ability to the destroyers that are fielded by both Ossoria and Cacerta, capable of engaging all manner of all manner of surface and aerial threats that originate from the United Republic and other foreign nations that may threaten the Empire of shalum. ‘ISN Guardian’ was initially ordered in August of 2001 and had her keel laid down on September 23rd, 2003 by the Shalumite National Defense Industries naval branch at shipyard number 1591. She was completed in late January, and was launched by March 3rd, 2006. After successfully completing her requisite sea trials, she was officially commissioned on July 25th, 2009. She fights under the motto Fendendo vince (By Defense I conquer) and makes her homeport in Ruhe Hafen, southwestern Shalum.

Navy destroyers are purposely built as fast warships with great ocean-going qualities and inherent agility. Their armament consists of a multi-mission approach to both offense and defense and the type can operate within the ranks of the sailing fleet or independently of said fleet when tracking down peripheral threats such as marauding enemy submarines. ‘ISN Guardian’, in particular, is built within an 8,800-ton range and powered by an integrated electric propulsion system consisting of gas turbines, diesel and electric generators. The vessel is also outfitted with a slew of sensors and processing systems allowing it to track, identify and engage variable target types at range.

Design of the ‘ISN Guardian’ is conventional in the modern sense. The bow is sharp, extended rearwards to the widened amidships and squared off at the stern. The deck is purposely designed as featureless to promote "stealth-like" qualities on the high seas. As such, the sides of her superstructure are covered over in a long-running sloping panel. The deck gun is positioned along the long forecastle with the vertical launch missile cells directly aft. Aft of the launch cells is the start of the main superstructure containing the bridge (identified by its large rectangular window panes). Aft of the bridge section is a pyramidal-shaped mast enclosure containing a radome at its very top (this the Sampson surveillance and fire control system). Along the sides of the pyramid are two satellite communications domes set on protruding shelves. The superstructure then takes a dramatic drop to the enclosed funnel exhausting the engine arrangement, its top noticeably squared off. There is a noticeable gap between the forward portion and rear portion of the superstructure while the portion aft of amidships contains a pole mast followed by another pyramidal-shaped structure capped by the air-search radar system. The hangar is contained aft of this structure while the helipad is situated at the extreme end of the ship. Overall, the ‘ISN Guardian’ promotes an excellently clean profile fitting of a modern surface warship.

Propulsion for the “ISN Guardian’ is provided by the Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP) system delivering to twin shafts. The arrangement utilizes 2 x Rolls-Royce WR-21 series gas turbine engines (outputting 28,800 shaft horsepower each) with 2 x Wartsila 12V200 diesel-fueled generators (2,700 shaft horsepower each and 2 x Converteam electric motors (27,000 shaft horsepower. This supplies the vessel with a top speed of 30 knots in ideal conditions and an operational range of 7,000 nautical miles. The IEP arrangement benefits the design by not requiring a mechanical transmission to either shaft. The gas turbines and diesel generators feed into frequency converters ahead of the electric motors mounted to each propeller shaft. As such, the vessel can utilize a low-powered approach during basic cruising and a high-powered approach for full-flight maneuvers by using one form of propulsion (or both) at any given time. There are stealth- and maintenance/cost-related benefits to the configuration which is growing in popularity with naval warships.

The vessel is well-armed for its given role (the categorization of "destroyer" says it all). As a guided-missile destroyer, the ‘ISN Guardian’ fits a 48-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS) containing 48 x surface-to-air missiles. Depending on the type of missile stored (Aster 15 or Aster 30 series or a combination of both), these weapons can reach out to targets some 2 to 120 kilometers away. The launch cells are backed by a more conventional deck gun fitting - a 4.5" BAE Systems Mk 8 Mod 1 series rapid-fire cannon - capable of engaging surface targets at range or supplying offshore bombardment. The cannon is a single-barrel system housed in an armored enclosure with traverse limited only by the superstructure aft of the VLS. ‘ISN Guardian’ fields an additional 2 x 30mm cannon arrangement as well as 2 x 20mm Phalanx close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for short-range work of aerial threats. Should the target make it beyond this defensive network, the crew can then call upon 2 x minigun systems as a final layer of defense. Up to 6 x 7.62mm general purpose machine guns are fitted about the vessel to defend from extremely close-range threats such as suicide boats. It is worth noting that the ‘ISN Guardian’ is also configured to field a pair of AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers (quad launchers) as well as the proven BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile series. All in all, the ‘ISN Guardian’ is properly arranged to engage enemy strike aircraft, bombers, cruise missiles, enemy warships and submarines with equal lethality.

Beyond her array of physical armament, the ‘ISN Guardian’ plays upon her electronics suite to gain the advantage in a given fight. Sensors include the SAMPSON multi-function air tracking radar system as well as the BAe/Thales S1850M series fully-digital Electronic Support Measures (ESM) 3D surveillance radar. Raytheon supplies the vessel's I- and E-/F-band radar systems while Ultra Electronics provides the Electro-Optical Gun Control System (EOGCS), a radar tracking suite and the MFS-7000 series sonar system. The ‘Guardian’ is also fitted with countermeasures in the way of the UAT 16 arrangement, the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense (SSTD) suite and the Airborne Sys IDS300 decoy system. All Type 45 vessels are also equipped with the Thales ESM system.

With its helipad situated to the rear (as well as the enclosed hangar facility), the ‘Guardian’ can launch and retrieve 1 or 2 MH-60 Seahawk multimission helicopters. They can can be outfitted with anti-ship and anti-submarine measures to provide an over-the-horizon approach to dealing with potential threats. The hangar facility allows for repairs and maintenance to be conducted while at sea and the area is completely protected from the elements

After her launch, the ‘ISN Guardian’ was assigned to the 1st Imperial fleet, which is based out of Beckermann naval base. She has seen several engagements against Azurlavain naval vessels, the most recent against the Sovngarde where it supported boarding operations from a distance. While she already has a successful history under her belt, the ‘Guardian’ is certainly prepared to continue to win battles and defend the Empire for years to come.

An Army Review: The Gladiator 3 MBT
The Lead Tank of the Shalumite Land Arsenal

Image

For some time, the Empire of Shalum needed a tank capable of combating the arsenal fielded by the United Republic of Azurlavai. For over two decades, the Gladiator 2 served its purpose well, and received many upgrades, however it was believed that a new predecessor was needed to effecitly combat threats often faced by the Imperial Shalumite Army. Design teams were put to work to create such a new vehicle, and the result was the Gladiator 3 main battle tank.

The Gladiator 3 uses a Shalumite-German MTU 1500 hp Tyranpowerpack engine and features a 120 mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun with an autoloader provided a rate-of-fire of up to 15 rounds per minute. According to military sources, ammunition in use with the Gladiator 3 can penetrate the armor of the KpfPz. K4A2 'Königskobra' tank, and possibly even armored vehicles more competent than that. Test against vehicles stronger than the K4A2 have not been conducted at this time.

Radar equipment and laser detection systems along with reactive armor are comparable to both Vyrsarian and Azzie main battle tanks. The Gladiator 3 is fitted with a water snorkel (via kit) and can cross water obstacles of up to 4.2 meters (13.78 ft) deep. The water-tight system takes about 30 minutes to set up and the tank can fire its main gun as soon as it is on dry land. The Gladiator 3 can accelerate from 0 kmh to 32 kmh in approximately 7 seconds. She can also climb a 60-degree slope and clear vertical obstacles of up to 1.3 meters.

The Gladiator 3 is equipped with a first-line fire control system that can track and engage other tanks but also includes non-conventional tank targets such as low flying helicopters, with an effective range of fire being up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The fire control system can spot-track-fire on auto at vehicle-sized targets without the crew's input. The 120mm munitions mainstay is the SSTAM (Shalumite Smart Top Attack Munitions) round. The SSTAM is a smart fire-and-forget projectile that have their own guidance system using stabilizing fins during flight. These rounds can be fired from behind cover and have a maximum range of 8 kilometers (4.97 miles). The three man crew - composed of the commander, gunner and driver - have protection with an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) system and armor that is classified. A friendly force protection system that offers situational awareness is connected to the navigation system. The MTU MB-883 KA500 engine produces 1500 horsepower while the advanced suspension system is hydro pneumatic semi-automatic. The tank can tilt forward, back and to either side. Each wheel is connected in such a way to allow for multiple fire angles depending on the location of the target relative to the tank.

As of 2014, the Gladiator 3 entered full service in the Shalumite military, with several hundred models currently in service. She has yet to see combat, however, and only time will tell how capable she is when it comes to combating foreign threats against the Empire.
Conscription is the vitality of a nation, the purification of its morality, and the real foundations of all its habits.

Motorway Lanes Closed for Military Use

Image

The Ministry of Defence has announced that roadside lanes on the Motorway will temporarily be closed to use by the public, in order for use by the military. The announcement comes three weeks after train schedules were disrupted by a sudden influx in the use of railways by the military. Locals in the west have reported increased military activity in the western half of the country, with videos and pictures being shared over social media featuring long convoys on local roads and large amounts of helicopters flying west. The Ministry of Defence has not commented in depth on the subject, saying only that there was no increased activity and that the increase of sightings was a result of routine rotations of forces that often occurs once to twice a year, and for citizens not to worry.

War Concerns Begin to Wane

Image

The war fears that were so prevalent several months ago have finally begun to die down. After the incident on Iron Island which involved a large-scale military attack on the Shalumite territory, fears of a larger conflict brewed in all three nations. Months after the incident failed to result in a larger conflict, however, the fears of an imminent war are now slowly receding.

Several months ago the worries were foremost in the minds of the nation, with the government deploying troops in urban streets near the border to help provide a sense of security for citizens. These troops have now been reduced in their deployment, though patrols are still ongoing both along the border and to help keep the populace calm.

Coup in Gavinium Magnus
authored by Lucy Wu, junior correspondent

Shocking news out of Gavinium Magnus this evening as it is reported that a coalition of military figures, led by Colonels Chloe Saunders and Eustace de Mark, have announced that they have assassinated the rightful King, Maximian II, in a brutal seizure of government. Unfortunately, due to the illegitimately installed National Executive Committee’s oppressive means of monopolizing the news networks within the nation, all that can be otherwise confirmed is that the Dowager Queen has been forced to flee the capital, with many speculating that she has found refuge with Han forces, though this has not yet been confirmed. There is not yet word on the status of Princes Julian, and Balthazar, or Princesses Constance, Jennette, Marianne, and Arienne, all of whom are considered minors by Gavinium law, while they are but youths, these violent criminals have demonstrated, with the brutal killing of Maximian, that these are individuals with no sense of right or wrong, and that they are willing to go to any lengths necessary to advance their own, heinous, agendas.

The silence of this so-called National Executive Committee as to the health and wellbeing of these juvenile royals is a grim hint at what may have come. Final reports from associate stations to the Chronicle within Gavinium stated that forces, apparently loyal to the NEC, had begun seizing major media outlets in an effort to consolidate all information leaving the country under the new ‘government’. Unfortunately, we have not been able to resume contact with these affiliate stations and must assume that they have been overrun by supporters of this coup. Unfortunately, due to the NEC’s apparent monopoly on the Gavinium’s media, there is no word as to the number of loyalist remaining within Gavinium, though there can be no doubt that the NEC will actively attempt to seek out and purge any such elements that may offer resistance to the new self-proclaimed overlords.

Due to the special relationship between Gavinium and the Middle Kingdom, many are waiting eagerly to hear what the Son of Heaven will say in response to this sickening revolt, while the official statement has not yet been made, the Most Honored Scholar, Dong Sung, was reached for a brief statement on the treacherous act, to which he stated, “regicide is amongst the most severe crimes ever concocted by the twisted hearts of mankind- any hope for legitimacy, any hope for international favor, any hope for reconciliation between true states and this so-called government were lost with the true King’s last breaths. The Lord of Ten Thousand Years has yet to ascertain who has obtained the right to rule in Gavinium as of yet, however, soon a new rightful monarch will be proclaimed, and they will enjoy the same support, legitimacy, and prestige deserved by the Son of Heaven’s Delegate in Gavinium. Further statements will be made in the near future as the Son of Heaven guides the Divine Empire’s response.”

So far, no additional statements have been released by the Dragon Throne or His Majesty’s Imperial Viceroy, however, one thing is certain- there is a great sadness in Gavinium, the sadness of millions who would mourn for their King, a good and noble man, whose life has been too rapidly taken. May the Heavenly Magistrate he is taken before be merciful, may his Ancestors be quick to embrace him, and may he be honored justly in Heaven for his work done on Earth. There is little that we mere subjects may do for the people of Gavinium in these dark days, but as you go before your Ancestral Shrines this evening, please, beseech your Ancestors that it might suit Heaven to return peace and enlightenment to the Protectorate, and may Heaven guard the people of Gavinium Magnus.

Fifth Fleet Arrives in Aragon
Ossorian naval force arrives for military exhibition

The Fifth Fleet of the Royal Ossorian Navy arrived in Aragon for a two week-long visit to the Empire of Shalum which the Admiralty has described in a press release as being a "public relations exercise to allow the Shalumite public to better understand the Navy as the international face of the High Kingdom".

The fleet is comprised of the dreadnought Fragarach, the fleet carrier Caitria, the heavy cruisers ROS Taexali and Atrebates, the destroyers ROS Rhesda and Abeth, and the light cruisers ROS Travers, Delamore, Adair and Breslin. The fleet is under the command of Fleet Admiral of the White Ennis O'Hara and Fleet Admiral of the Green Sibéal Lahti, the second in command.

The Admiralty has announced that following the two-week visit to Aragon, the Fifth Fleet will be temporarily stationed at Beckerman Naval Base in the city of Ruhe Hafen in Crestone Province, during which time they are scheduled to conduct training exercises in conjunction with the First Fleet of the Imperial Shalumite Navy.

The Admiralty declined to comment on whether or not this represented a significant change in the Scepter's foreign policy towards Shalum and the Continent at large, stressing that despite recent tensions and unrest in the area, the visit and exercises had been planned months in advance and due to the recent relaxation of tensions between Shalum and the United Republic of Azurlavai, Their Lordships had seen no reason not to proceed as planned.

Army Modernization Underway!

Image
A trio of recruits at the Votastyl Haer Training Facility, out in field exercises on Week 11. The next five weeks will be nothing but assault drills and the last of their Qualifications. These three will then be moving on to Infantry School to learn hand to hand combat and heavy weapons familiarization

I watch as a group of trainee soldiers charge through an urban assault course, establishing killzones and making sure every angle is covered, kicking down doors and searching each room in turn. They are empty, until a single enemy riflemen swings around the corner ahead, an ATR-47M in hand. However, he is swiftly cut down by the trainees, who pause to watch for additional hostiles before they move on.

One might think they were viewing Imperial Marines, Acrean grenadiers or Haer Stormtroopers in a drill they’ve done a hundred times. But, if you can believe it, these are conscripts running through their first physical drill. They’ve been briefed on the scenario and practiced the individual pieces, but they have never done this course before. And they clear it in record time.

These conscripts are one of the first batches of recruits being put through a new battery of training courses in the indoctrination camps, which includes an additional four weeks of drilling for extra practice on the rifle ranges. This of course before proceeding on to Advanced Indoctrination and Training (AIT) for another five weeks of practice as infantry soldiers, in which they learn to bring down their foes with knives, kicking down doors in urban assault courses and learning to use heavy weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers.

All over the Haer, the same treatment is undergoing with all specializations, as these troopers are taught much more fine battle skills. From tankers to artillery men to hazardous operations personnel, those extra four weeks are helping to round out the general effectiveness of our soldiers during Basic Training instead of taking valuable time from AIT, all by directive of Supreme Chairman Karlos Vocht, who claimed that the events of Iron Island have triggered this new change, and now months after the Battle of Kaiserweth it seems that the military is seeing positive results.

Veteran formations are not exempt from this additional drilling, either. “My men are much better shots, certainly” says General Johan Svakke of the 17th Guards Regiment, as he stands over the qualification range while his soldiers plug targets at 300m away with ease. “We’ll have to see how this holds up in real combat but…I’m certainly hopeful.”

The Haer promises the same improvement across the board, but until the next crisis flares up, the United Republic will have to sit by and wait with baited breath to see the actual results in live combat.

Resistance Fighters Apprehended!

Death row of Svartport Criminal Penitentiary, where those scheduled to die are housed

Dawn at Svartport Criminal Penitentiary, located in the most remote part of the Dhurian wildlands. Here, a large majority of the little criminal element in our glorious nation are detained, keeping their taint from spreading out into civilization. Out in the execution yard, six men and women are lined up against a wall. All of them are offered a blindfold and last cigarette as is custom. Some take the offer, some don’t. When all is finished, the aides move out of the way as six prison guards level their ATR-74Ms, firing off a short burst and ending the lives of these traitors.

These six were the leaders of the Sovereignty, one of a handful of miserable resistance groups dedicated to bringing down the benevolent United Republic in their bid for independence by any despicable means. When we bring such grace and prosperity by bringing these failed states under our banner, we do so simply to spread the fascist cause and give those who have been oppressed and failed by tyrants and weak, feeble-minded fools the relief to know that their lives can be improved simply by loyalty to the state.

The resistance seeks to destabilize that peace merely for the selfish cause of individual sovereignty after decades of progressive alliance that has improved their lands and ways of life, and their misguided philosophy includes the harm of our loyal soldiers and the deaths of innocent civilians. Such a violent regime that seeks to suppress the freedoms and liberties of the people must be fought by every member of society, and rewards are posted for those who come forward with information to put an end to this so-called ‘revolution’ and finally brings the threat to an end.

Devastating Fire Shuts Down Highway!

Image
Fire Brigade teams attempt to get the wildfire under control, as cars and infrastructure are swallowed up in the blaze

It has been unusually dry this summer in Azurlavai, when we normally get rains to go with our hot weather. But with this dry weather, many people are taking advantage to enjoy the outdoors in various activities such as camping, biking, hiking and visiting the beach to name a few. However, we saw the dark side of such a weather phenomenon today, as on the Valkheiss Highway running to Lowell City a transport semi was forced to pull off the freeway by what the driver describes as unusual engine problems. As soon as he cut the engine, the semi erupted in fire, which spread to the seven cars the truck was transporting on its trailer. While traffic attempted to flow around the stricken transport, in mere minutes the dry grass around the conflagration quickly caught flame, and all lanes were split by the flames as a handful more vehicles caught light, making the blaze worse when their fuel tanks detonated.

Emergency crews and the local Haer Fire Brigade both responded to the sudden crisis, but by the time they did the surrounding hills were alight, and the smoke cloud could be seen from many miles away. Fortunately, through the brave work of emergency crews the fire was soon contained, and by the night the flames had stopped spreading, though the freeway was still shut down while the Haer dispatched medical and supply personnel to attend to the thousands of stranded on the road, who were unable to divert away. Though it was reported that six people lost their lives to the fire and dozens were evacuated by emergency crews to nearby hospitals, the loss of human life was mercifully low.

“Our hearts go out to those who lost family and friends, and to the people we are still attempting to evacuate from the area and the freeway. Rest assured, we have the situation under control and you will be safe,” says Fire Brigade commander Captain Pedersson, who gave her statement while coordinating helicopters and trucks to drop fire blocks on the edges of the fire and keep it from spreading.

Three local towns were evacuated by another Haer battalion, transport and coordination provided while these people were quickly moved out. By all accounts, the relocation is still underway through the night, but the people are largely taking care of themselves, allowing the soldiers to keep order. All government estimates are that things will be restored to normal within a few days, and people can return to their lives after this tragic event.

Does Shalum Still Need Aircraft Carriers?
Image

They are floating airfields, capable of spreading a nation’s military might across the world’s oceans at a moments notice. A major piece of any navy, aircraft carriers are a sign of power and respect. Ownership of a carrier for fixed-wing aircraft practically admits a nation to an elite club of combat-capable nations.

The concept of these vessels has been around for over a hundred years. In the month of May, in the year 1915, the first plane took off from a moving Shalumite warship, the ISN Julius Holland, which was temporarily for the purpose of launching aircraft. Up until a year earlier, the idea had been considered foolhardy and too expensive by the Privy Council. Five years later, in 1920, the ISN Augustine became the first dedicated Shalumite aircraft carrier.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of the Empire currently has seven-billion dollars invested in the two aircraft carriers that Shalum has in service, along with the aircraft attached to them. Several leading columnists and editors argue, however, that they are both an unnecessary expense and no longer strategically necessary for the Empire.

From the Shalumite Inquisitor, columnist Hubert Dudziak, they are the “greatest waste of public funds” when it comes to any current government program. He also went on to say that the Iron Island had not shown a need for Shalumite carriers, due to the fact that frigates and destroyers were the vessels that won the major engagements for the Empire.

As early as the eighties, there have been skeptics. Adam Satkowski, a famous naval historian of the time, argued that "the only practical value of carriers in the future will be in simply existing, not in fighting". To use them in anger would be a trigger for total war.

Some nations take different approaches to these class of ships, like Cacerta or Ossoria, both of whom operate several. This is to be expected, given the island nature of these countries. Other nations, like Shalum, have miniature carriers with only around a dozen planes total, and have instead preferred to invest more of its defense budget into missile technology.

But does any nation really need carriers? Andrew Kaspar argues that “neither Cacerta nor Ossoria” needs to maintain so many of these vessels in order to demonstrate the power that they have on the high-seas.

The logic for carriers is very simple. It allows a nation to take air power around the globe without having to worry about countries in between who might refuse the use of ground bases or airspace.

But have things changed in the age of the nuclear submarine, precision missiles and the unmanned drone?

Unlike "pointless" frigates, carriers are still as relevant as ever, says Amelia Bialynska, a former naval admiral states. “While the drone may all be the rage these days, let's face it, you still have to launch them from somewhere.”

Submarines are "excellent" at many things. Their Tomahawk cruise missiles flew hundreds of miles to knock out Karlos Vocht’s naval invasion force. "But a submarine can't tell you where the targets are. And they can't be easily rearmed apart from at a naval base." Admiral Bialynska continued. “Nuclear weapons give a nation "cachet". But carriers give a nation "capability"’, she added.

Take a scenario where Syara decides to close the Straits between the continents, Bialynska suggests. Any such closure would have an immediate effect on world energy supplies and could severely affect some world economies.

Syara could easily deploy fast patrol boats that can offer a new kind of asymmetrical warfare. By operating as a swarm, a frigate or destroyer would be overwhelmed by the sheer number of attackers. Whereas a carrier some way from the threat could pick off the attackers by scrambling its jets.

So it's easy to agree with the naval experts who say you need carriers to be a power on the seas. But does the Shalum have that need?
As an island, there is a particular case for a country to to have carriers, says Bialynska, ‘but Shalum is not an island’, she points out. “The Empire is a land based power, and has never harbored a great need for a powerful navy.”

But there will be those who would suggest the Shalum’s diminished military power makes carriers unnecessary. "Any major conflict in the Straits or the seas between the UR and Shalum won't be decided by the Shalumite navy," argues Bialynska. "It will be decided by our expansive missile defense system and nations Shalum is allied with."

“Even so, there is something about having a carrier in your ranks. They are a quintessential expression of what it means to be powerful and respected. Their sheer size as they cut through the ocean, the scream of planes taking off and coming into land, makes them an exciting, visceral experience.”

"The deck when launching planes is frenetic and extremely noisy. It's like a ballet - a triumph of everyone knowing their job. If you screw up you can have your head cut off by a rotor blade."

In any case, the powerful imagery and symbolism of carriers will continue to play a part in the debate for as long as it continues in the Empire, and across the globe.
Conscription is the vitality of a nation, the purification of its morality, and the real foundations of all its habits.

It is better to be a warrior in a garden then to be a gardener in a war.

First National Motorway Route Opens
Major new road dedicated by the Ernthi
- Laersis Ronsas

Hanren, Arkoenn --- At a brief ceremony in the small desert town of Hanren, a town of approximately 12,000 people east of the Ansi River, Ernthi Anzisi Kacsa dedicated the first national route completed under the 2010 National Motorway Program. National Route 1 (NR1) is the first continuous major motorway to from the northern coast of the Empire to the southern border, connecting the port city of Tharphron with the border town of Insdoen.

The road is significant because previous major roads connecting the north to the south have typically been interrupted by the Vaxkoen Mountain range, either relying on local roads to connect northern and southern routes, or skirting the heart of the range entirely. NR1 consolidates a number of local roads and previous motorways that did not properly link the north and south, with the intention of improving commerce and defensive travel between the regions north and south of the mountains. The effort to blast and tunnel routes that would allow NR1 to cut directly through the mountains was perhaps the single most time-consuming aspect of the motorway's construction.

National Route 1 is the first of the new motorways, but it will not be the last. National Route 2, further to the west, will connect the port city of Alkean to the mountainous border town of Jozun. National Route 3, starting in Vardoen, will connect that border hub with the southern border city of Pyphon.

Image

"It is our sincerest hope that the completion of National Route 1, as well as the other roads built as part of the National Motorway Program will help to foster greater unity and commerce within our nation, and with our neighbors on all sides," the Ernthi told reporters and notables from Tharphron, Insdoen, and Hanren. "Let this new road, a shining example of Arkoennite ingenuity and perseverance, be a unifier, and a reminder that our nation's best days are not behind it," she continued.

National Route 3 is expected to be completed later this year in early dahsa (late October or early November, for international readers). National Route 2 is not expected to be completed until late dahsa or early riksa (mid-March or early-April for international readers).

The Rise of Female Players in The Schottic Game

What is next for women in the game?

After our previous two articles looking into the rise of female players in the mixed (or traditionally male) game, we wanted to take a look at the legacy these departing individuals have left behind in the Women's Super-League. The WSL has existed as a semi-professional football competition since its inception in 1991, and has been a breading ground for many of Schottia's best female players. With well-documented Integration-Programme now in full swing, and women swelling the ranks our national teams at all levels, it was always expected that the WSL would gradually be phased out. Interestingly however, despite the loss of many of their star players, we have seen the opposite come into effect. The Semi-pro or part-time element of the league was originally a result of low gate turning outs, but now it is helping to attract girls focused on their studies. A new genteration of well-rounded young women who are choosing not to compromise on their education.

With the exodus of young stars such as Chloe Rudden (North Laithland), Jenny McDonald (Pirates), and Bella Thompson (Nomad Brotherhood); you could be forgiven for thinking the wind may have been taken from the sails. Instead the high player turn over, combined with an influx of young girls coming through at grass roots level has ensured that there is a constant flow within the playing squads. In actual fact, such has been the demand from young women rushing to take up the sport, that the WSL has been extended from twelve teams to sixteen. Some youth coaches have even began to speculate that there are more girls than boys taking up the sport at under fourteen level. This in itself has lead to many professional teams adopting similar training, and youth selection systems, taken directly from WSL models.

The attendances have seen a sharp increase too, with last season's match between Handon Ladies and Soessch Ladies attracting a crowd of three thousand four hundred people. With the preponderant style of the league matches seeming to be fast flowing technical football, there is plenty to get the fans excited with some high scoring matches. It seems to be that when given the choice between paying to see the wealthy stars of the Schottic Premier League, and the plucky youngsters of the WSL, more and more are opting for the latter. That's not to say that these matches have began to take their toll on the numbers of SPL fans, however there are signs that attendances at women's games are on the up.

Who is making waves

So with the semi-pro women's game taking off and the leagues top stars heading for the exit door, whom out of the players left is still carrying the torch in the WSL.

This season's top scorer was twenty-year-old Ouissal Tahar, and the West Coast Warriors striker is tipped as one of the next players to burst onto the scene. With Rudden leaving Handon Eagles at the start of the season, taking her phenomenal goal-scoring rate with her, fans of the WSL would have been wondering how that scoring prowess would have been replaced. Tahar was on hand however, to waylay those fears as she slammed in twenty-four goals in twenty-seven appearances helping her side to an impressive fourth in the table. The athletic centre-forward made remarkable improvements in what was her third season in the top team, so much so that she has been linked with a NS$ 1,000,000 move to the co-ed game.

In addition to this, Handon Ladies' "deadly duo" of Jane Swanson (24) and Julie Reid (23), were once again in stunning form, steering their side to a third league title in six years. They may have been missing their old partners in crime Thompson and McDonald, but it didn't stop them from tearing most of the opposition apart scoring eighteen and fourteen goals respectively. Swanson who has already played co-ed football with the Di Bradini Cup squad, has more than enough pace and skill to stand out at this level. When it comes to all round style of play, there is no denying that Handon Ladies had a slight edge on the rest of the field. In a league where the average player age in only twenty one, their relatively more experienced playing squad proved too strong for the rest of the field finishing nine points clear of Soessch.

15 WFC Dundee 30 4 6 20 6 24 −18 18
16 University of Soessch 30 2 6 22 17 65 −48 12
Another young lass who impressed us was Grace Hallman, playing for one the four new sides, Cornellians WFC. The WSL branch office of Schottia's MPL outfit had a decent enough first season, sneaking into the top half of the table. The seventeen-year-old left-back showed composure far beyond her years, holding the back line as well as supporting her teammates in the attack. Hallman, like most of the side are products of Cornellians' new youth academy, and for many of them this is a stepping stone en route to the MPL.

This season's runners-up Soessch Ladies are also a side, which boasts a few talented players. After losing seventeen-year-old centre-back Saskia Holden to Taeshani side Bayern Phoenix, there would have been some been some of the fans beginning to worry that a slip down the table was imminent. However, former Olympic squad players such as left-back Haley Hooper, and team captain Lisa Hachten, held firm to guide the side to a much-deserved second in the league. Soessch's job was made even easier by the emergence of attacking midfielder Jean McGee. The nineteen-year-old, showed just why she is being tipped for a bright future with eight well-taken goals.

The Handon Eagles proved that there is life after Rudden by replicating their third place from last season. The teenage wing-forward had scored thirty-three of her side's sixty-seven goals last time round causing such a splash, that she earned a move to the Nepharim league. Despite this goal vacuum the Eagles pushed on, actually supposing their points tally from last season. The signings of Dundee midfielder Gabi De Ceta (17), and Marsia striker Victoria Dunn (22), helped to steady the ship, with both women rising to the challenge. With four of the sixteen WSL sides haling from the city of Handon, there is much for the team to play for in terms of bragging rights. Of all the players stepping up to the plate this season, by far the most impressive was Anna Kurovski. The twenty-year-old goalkeeper pulled of some fantastic saves, rescuing her side time and time again. Her coach Linda Scott even commented that Kurovski could make history by playing for Schottia in the future.

In a league surrounded by such talented youngster, all of whom passionate about playing attractive football, it is hard to pick out one player for special treatment. That said, there was one young woman whom the critics were falling over themselves to heap praise upon. West Belker Picts midfielder Erin Brady pretty much ran the show for her team, arguably dragging them single-handedly to seventh in the league. At 181cm she towers above most other players on the pitch, and her physical presence allows her to really stamp her authority on the match. The twenty-year-old has been in and around the fist team for a couple of seasons, but this was by far the year she came of age. Brady, has an almost uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time, marshalling the centre of the park with aplomb. After the season she has had, and given the Picts' wage budget, manager Luis Croopnan as all but given up on keeping his prize asset during the transfer window. Despite her incredible potential and the fact that she is already a key player, Brady could go for as little as half a million given the current climate.

As long as the conveyor belt keeps turning it seems that the WSL will have no shortage of fresh new talent to replace the stars leaving to turn pro. There are definitely two sides to the problem of the league's star players being poached by foreign sides. While on one hand the cream is constantly being skimmed form the top, the prospect of being plucked from obscurity ensures that young girls are willing, in increasing numbers, to start out their careers in the WSL.

Weapons and explosives stolen from Shalumite military base

-Shalumite Military Police officers on duty near crime scene

Shalumite authorities and military officials are currently in the process of investigating a theft of approximately forty assault rifles and as many as two hundred assorted explosive devices and detonators from a military installation in eastern Shalum. The crime in question occurred at some point during the night, between Saturday and Sunday, most likely during the time frame known as the 'Witching Hour' when guards as the most likely to be tired on the job. The break-ins come at a time when Shalum has strengthened its security measures and raised its alert levels following the attack on Iron Island and a reported incursion of Shalumite airspace in the east.

Kravola based prosecutor, Adalwin Behrendt, said in a statement that an investigation has been launched on charges of "theft with break-in carried out by a criminal or terrorist group" and "fraudulent entry into a restricted military compound." He later went on to say that if apprehended, that the thieves could face charges such as staunch as treason, due to Shalum's currently military stance.

An official with the Department of Internal Security, which generally runs law enforcement in more rural areas of Shalum, said the thief or thieves appeared to have cut through a fence to enter the high-security site, and could have even received assistance from soldiers inside the compound. The official was not authorized to speak publicly because the operation is ongoing.

The Shalumite Defense Ministry and a top spokesman for the Shalum military did not immediately respond to calls and text messages from The Shalumite News Network seeking details on the incident. Mayor Jonas Wittich of Karlsruhe told the SNN that he did not know precisely what was stolen, but said it was the first recorded theft on the installation. He said the outer fences were broken into, and that nine storehouses were affected.

The base itself, which sits on approximately 500 acres of land, sits on the outskirts of a town of around 30,000. Among the items stored on base, are armored vehicles, and munitions regularly deployed by the Imperial Shalumite Armed Forces. Because of the incident, additional checkpoints and security have been deployed in the local area for the time being.

The Daily Worker
SPL Special
Marian McFadden reports

This weekend the new SPL Season got underway, with a flurry of excitement and anticipation. Would the Warriors be able to defend their crown? Or would one of the big hitters such as Handon United or FC Soessch rain on their parade? There is also the prospect of one of the other, traditionally mid-table sides, such as Port Christopher, Marionville, or La Gorlions making a charge for the title. Warriors' manager Jane Gullie, will be feeling confident of striking another blow this season. Having kept a hold of stars such as Craig O'Maramy, Ivan Archic, and Elisa Rivera, she also added to her side. The four million capture of Lammerton's Kris Scott was one of the big deals to go through this summer.

The New Belfast club's closest rivals will no doubt be Handon United, the side they piped to the post last season. United have also strengthened, bringing in the impressive David Blengen and Nik Konstidious. Manager Neil Scarton will also be hopeful that youngsters such as Aya Bernman and Lisa Murphy can make an impact given the chance to impress. Whatever the season has in store for United, you'd bet your money on the side finishing near the top of the table again.

Of the newly promoted sides, one would imagine Granton Vale have the potential to do most damage. The side, which play just outside Handon were outstanding in capturing the Region A title last season, just edging out Port Patrick. Despite the loss of star midfielder Aaron Marcie, The Beachcombers have got a real gritty quality to them, with some experienced players on their books. Former Port Sebastian midfielder David Donnen, and veteran Tommy Wilson will anchor the midfield, with young striker Jack Hobbs a threat in front of goal.

The relegation battle this season is probably going to be between the other three newly promoted sides, Herman Park, Stoker Bay, and Berwick United. On top of this Dundee, and Allous VB are in real danger of getting sucked in.

Another big talking point this season is likely to be, whether Eric Desmond can regalvanise King's Park. The 37-year-old takes over from Chris Carpenter, after they slumped to an uncharacteristic eighth last time round. The small Handon side, who have been punching above their weight for a number of years now, have the added pressure from the rod they made for their own back. With very little budget Desmond will be praying that his only signing Erin Braden will be enough to transform their fortunes. Braden certainly performed well in the Women's Super-League, but whether she can translate that into SPL form is another matter.

Whatever the result the SPL is as set to be another rollercoaster, with more than its shares of highs and lows. With tough restrictions in Schottia ruling out UICA football, and any external sponsorship, there is nothing to play for except the title. This means, as always, it is win or bust for each of these twenty sides, as they head out in search of glory.

Port Sebastian 4–0 Allous VB
23" Coine, 37" 80" Millet, 56" Dawson |
motm: Emeline Millet
Champions of two seasons ago Port Sebastian, showed us that they are going to be a force again this year, with a 4-0 home win over Allous. Despite not bringing anyone in over the summer, the likes of Jack Baxter, and Ko-oren internationalist Emeline Millet were simply too much for the Soessch side to deal with. First half goals from Millet and Paul Coine put Porty well on their way, in a match they never looked likely to lose. In the second half Porty finished the job, with Fred Dawson's goal on 56 minutes, and Millet's second on 80.
-----

FC Soessch 4–1 Hollin
11" Holstad, 39" 76" Schwartz, 57" Ümann | 70" Ellsmere
motm: Till Ümann
Allous' city rivals also off to a stronger start, FC Soessch also managing to put four past the opposition. This time it was Hollin who were on the receiving end, and the team from Belker will have been very disappointed with this showing. Key for Soessch, who finished third last season, will be the return to fitness of Till Ümann, and the 21-year-old was indeed man of the match. An early goal from Polar Islander Konstantin Holstad gave his side the lead in the match. This was followed up by a goal from Ümann and a Bruno Schwartz double to give Soessch a convincing win. Polaaskan youngster Palle Ellsmere scored for Hollin, but it was little more than a consolation.
-----

Stalker Bay 1–1 D'Itille
60" Stanton | 15" L'Attue
motm: Caitlin L'Attue
The excitement surrounding Stalker Bay's return to the top flight was short lived as Caitlin L'Attue gave D'Itille the lead after only 15 minutes. The young winger's goal from the edge of the box leaving the keeper with no chance. Stalker Bay kept their heads up however, and Kevin Stanton's goal on 60 minutes, after some nice work from Jessica Knox, gave the newly promoted side a share of the points.
-----

Port James Athletic 0–0 Berwick United
|
motm: Scott Vincent
Another side making their return to the top flight are Berwick United, and the Regional Division D champions will be happy with a draw away to Athletic. New signing Willie Erskin started for Port James, but even his inclusion wasn't enough for his side to break the deadlock.
-----

Handon United 0–0 New Belfast Warriors
|
motm: Jack Gordon
The eagerly anticipated match this week was between last year's first and second place teams, Handon United and New Belfast Warriors. The defending champions Wariors had strengthened their starting line up with the signing of Schottia cap Kris Scott from Lammerton, and United had brought in Hillstreet's Nik Konstidious and Port Patrick's David Blengin. Despite all this the match failed to impress, with the cagey encounter ending a goalless draw, much the home fans' frustration.
-----

Granton Vale 1–2 Marionville
29" Hobbs | 45" Maxwell, 90+2 Lewis
motm: Jarred Clotterman
Division A champions Granton Vale got of to a good start against Marionville, under-18s internationalist Jack Hobbs taping home a shot after 29 minutes. Unfortunately things didn't get any better than that for Granton, as Marionville looked very impressive. Despite the loss of loanee Gary Corsie the Old Boys showed why many are tipping them to be contenders this season, with goals from Michael Maxwell, and a late heartbreaker from Scott Lewis to give them the win. Despite the loss of a few high profile players in recent years, this settled Marionville squad look like a very well polished group of individuals.
-----

Herman Park 1–4 New Belfast Blues
80" Breeks | 24" Millar, 37" Lamb, 78" 86" Striven
motm: David Millar
Herman Park will be very disappointed with the resistance they put up in their first match at home to New Belfast Blues. Not exactly renowned as world beaters, NBB ran riot with goals from new signing David Millar, Jack Lamb, and Chris Striven (2). Herman Park were so poor, they made the likes of Millar and 20-year-old Sam Saxon look world class, as they suffered a humbling at home.
-----

Dundee 0–4 Hillstreet
| 17" Morton, 40" Leavie, 87" Viscount, 89" Leeve
motm: Kevin Morton
Hillstreet proved that there is life after last season's top scorer Konstidious. The Hunters recorded a 4-0 victory at Dundee, as the Panners look like they are really going to struggle this year. Christopherian youngster Jak Leavie was amongst those on the score sheet, as she marked her debut with a well-taken goal. The story of the day however was the Kevin Morton, and the 30-year-old Hillstreet captain was on sensational form guiding his team to a memorable win.
-----

La Gorlions 2–1 King's Park
21" J.Avlione, 55" Houben | 70" Doolan
motm: Fredrick Houben
Former Schottic internationalist Eric Desmond's first game in charge of King's Park, didn't exactly get off to a flyer, as his side lost 2-1 to La Gorlions. Not even much talked about new signing Erin Braden, could do anything to prevent last season's sixth place finishers defending their impressive home record. Jago Avelione opened the scoring after 21 minutes, with Cosumarite Fredrick Houben doubling their lead just after the break. The Royals did manage to pull one back through Alan Doolan twenty minutes from the end, but in truth, a draw would have flattered the 2009 champions.
-----

Lammerton City 1–2 Lammerton
41" Bentley | 32" Marcie, 88" Cooper
motm: Karen Seywel
The Lammerton derby never fails to disappoint, and once again it produced its fair share of thrills and spills. Both sides had brought in fresh talent over the summer. City had bolstered their defence, with the signing of Shalumite right-back Thomas Carmichael, where as their rivals secured the services of Granton's Aaron Macie and CFU's Nathan Clark. The game was end to end at points, but in the dying minutes, a John Cooper goal was enough to secure the victory for the Hornets, who will be hopping to make a charge this season.

Shalum Conducts Joint-Training Missions With Schottian Airforce
Image

Eight Shalumite Imperial Air Force JAS-39 Gripen multirole fighters are currently conducting air patrols and are training in the skies above the Free Colony of Schottia and East Vormsi, alongside several Typhoon contingents from the local Schottian air force. These training missions are being conducted as a show of unity between the allied nations of Shalum and Schotia, who held their first joint training mission in the year 2009.

The current detail of Shalumite fighters and one-hundred warrior airmen took up their current deployment at the end of June. Their task is to provide “airborne surveillance, policing, and interception capabilities capable of supplementing Schottia’s peacetime needs.” The Shalumite air force will conduct its current training mission into late September.

While the Free Colony maintains its own competent and well equipped national air force, Shalum provides a periodic peacetime presence, in order to show that the Empire is ready to stand next to Schottia during times of trouble. Given the geographical location of the Schottian isles, the Shalumite Armed Forces working in conjunction with the local air commanders, have agreed that the current deployment of fighters is appropriate for the generally peaceful attitude of the area. The Shalumite air force has decided to split its force, with four fighters based out of the airbase East Vormsi, and the four fighters based at a military base close to the city of Handon. Shalumite air Marshal David Walker is scheduled to visit Schottia later in the month to meet the allied personnel involved in the peace mission.

The “peacetime preparedness mission” usually involves the deployment of fighter aircraft for one-to-three months at a time, and up to three-times a year depending upon on Schottian wishes. These aircraft are used to conduct air defense flying training missions, and also provide necessary field experience for both the Shalumite and Schottian personnel involved. It is often times considered a test as well, to make sure that both forces can conduct air-policing missions on short notice if the need arises.

Anton Illich: Amy Connell is a role model
for young people.

In an interview with SBC News, author and former Communist Party Councillor Anton Illich, has come out with his most vocal backing yet for Amy Connell's leadership.

This is an important development in Schottic politics, as Connell has previously struggled to find support among senior left-wing figures. Despite being a prominent Communist member in the late 70's, Illich has become a key ally of the SSP and the Jan Connell administration. During that time he spoke out regularly in support of SSP policy, defending the coalition's position in terms of taxation and foreign affairs.

In this recent interview, filmed at his Dundee home, Illich gave a firm and decisive endorsement of the 24-year-old, in what may go a long way towards cooling the current inner tensions within the party.

When asked about whether her inexperience was an issue, Illich was adamant that it was an obstacle to her, only in so far as it was an angle her opponents could use to attack her. He went on to state that Schottia would never be fully democratic until its Council looked like a cross section of society, and that meant more people in their early 20's standing for election. He stated his belief that many of the people voting for Connell, at Party and national level, were young people, frustrated by a system, which holds the country back. He added that there was absolutely no reason why a young person could not run the country, and that people were simply making that assertion because it was easier fight a battle on those grounds, rather than tackling her head-on in terms of issues.

Illich implied that it was of 'crucial importance' that people challenge all forms of authority, and that it is the duty of the state to prove itself credible. He added that young people exercising their political voice like this was simply way of challenging the established power structures.

He also went on to offer a breakdown of her main policies, to demonstrate why her opponents have a problem with her leadership. Illich argued that when you lay out everything in her manifesto, there is nothing in particular which differs dramatically form the previous party line, held by her father. The only thing is that she is pushing for greater democracy, and greater transparency in how the market group are elected.

'She is pushing for one person one vote across the board in Schottic politics, from the Unions to the Socialist Market Group. Of course that is not popular, and it is not popular because, the same people might not get elected all the time, or as they prefer to dress it up: The capitalists will infiltrate the system.'

"Why are we showing signs of support towards the Shalumite military, and at the same time condeming their actions in Arcadia?"

He also commended Connell for her attempt to peruse closer relations with nations such as Gylias, whom the Scots have far more in common with politically. Illich has long argued (and written books on the subject) that many of Schottia's relationships are based on wholly outdated ideas of our international standing, and are simply not appropriate for the 21st century. He argued again, that in the case of Shalum and Ossoria, where the monarchies have vast amounts of power, that they represent an 'other' which creates an unhealthy Hegelian Dialectic in the minds of the Schottic public. For Illich this has the unhealthy affect of polarising politics and keeping the focus away from the here and now. He highlighted the importance of Schottia breaking free of this 'left-right-cycle' and work towards creating a politics for the people.

Field Marshal Urban Holland Delivers Speech in Aragon
Image

As the highest military commander of the Empire of Shalum, with troops stationed around the world, I'm really honored to be here today. When I look around this University of Aragon locale, I see a very special audience. You are the reason why I said yes to the invitation, to take leave and to come here today to speak to you all.

When I look around this room, I see people who want to make a contribution, I see people who want to make a better world, by doing groundbreaking scientific work, by creating impressive works of art, by writing critical articles or inspiring books, by starting up sustainable businesses, all of which can help many people in their own way. And you all have chosen your own instruments to fulfill this mission of creating a better world. Some chose the microscope as their instrument. Others chose dancing or painting or making music like we will hear after I am done here. Some chose the pen. Others work through the instrument of money. In short, we all have things we do in order to make the world a better place to live in, to bring our families up in.

(The Shalumite Field Marshal pauses for a moment, interlacing his hands as he tilts his head over to his right. Stepping onto the stage, a female soldier appears, wearing fatigues that identify her as a paratrooper, and is carrying a AR Scorpion that is loaded. Stepping up to the general, she smiles and offers the weapon to him, which he inspects and nods before taking it from her. He removes the magazine, setting it off to the side, before flicking the safety of the weapon on and sending the soldier off with a smile, murmuring his thanks into the microphone. Turning back to the assembled audience, he smiles for a moment.)

Image

Ladies and gentlemen, you may be able to tell by this point that I have made a different choice. Ladies and gentlemen -- (Laughter) (Applause) I share your goals. I share the goals of the speakers you have heard before up on the stage. I did not choose to take up the pen, the brush, the camera. I chose this instrument. I chose the gun.

For you, and you heard already, being so close to this gun may make you feel uneasy. It may even make you feel intimidated or downright afraid. A real, live assault weapon at a few feet's distance. Let us stop for a moment and understand this uneasiness. Its practically palpable, you could even hear it if you listen closely. Let us cherish the fact that while most of you have probably carried a gun during your mandatory service, that you have probably never needed to use actually use one to protect yourselves, your family, your bothers and sisters in arms. It means that Shalum is generally a peaceful country, most of the time anyways. Shalum is not at war right now, though we do have enemies out there. It means soldiers are not needed to patrol our streets right now, in order to maintain peace in the vast majority of the country. Guns are a part of our lives, but we, thankfully, have not really needed to use them much in the last seventy years. In many countries it is a different story however. In many countries people are confronted with guns. They are oppressed. They are intimidated -- by warlords, by terrorists, by criminals. Weapons can do a lot of harm. They are the cause of much distress and pain.

You may ask, why then am I standing before you with this weapon? Why did I choose the gun as my instrument? Today I want to tell you why. Today I want to tell you why I chose the gun to create a better world. And I want to tell you how this gun can help.

My story starts in the city of Aragon, this city and the capital of the Empire, the city where I was born. My father was a hardworking politician on the Privy Council, but when he had finished work for the day and returned home, he often told me and my brother stories. And most of the time, he told me this story I'm going to share with you now. The story of what happened when he was a conscripted soldier in the Imperial Armed Forces at the beginning of the war between Acrea, Azurlavai, and Shalum. The Soviets invaded The Empire. Their grim plans were evident. They meant to rule by means of repression. Diplomacy had failed to stop the Acreans. Only brute force remained. It was our last resort. My father was there to provide it, as a soldier willing to die for his country.

While my family had often times used the pen as a weapon, we had career soldiery in our blood, and my father was an excellent marksman because it was a skill that had been passed down to him through years of training. When he aimed, he never missed. At this decisive moment in Shalumite history my father was positioned on the bank of a river east of Frankfurt. He had a clear shot at the Acreans soldiers who came to occupy a free country, his country, our country. He fired. Nothing happened. He fired again. Yet not a single enemy soldier fell to the ground. My father had been given an old gun that could not even reach the opposite riverbank. Enemy troops marched onto Frankfurt, and there was nothing my father could do about it. Until the day my father died, he was frustrated about missing these shots. He could have done something. But with an old gun, not even the best marksman in the armed forces could have hit the mark. So this story stayed with me.

Then in secondary school, I was gripped by the stories of the Azurlavain soldiers -- soldiers who left the safety of their own homes and risked their lives to liberate a country and a people that they didn't know. They liberated towns that were not their own without a second thought. It was then that I decided I would take up the gun -- out of respect and gratitude for those men and women who came to liberate us -- from the awareness that sometimes only the gun can stand between good and evil. Right and wrong.

And that is why I took up the gun -- not to shoot, not to kill, not to destroy, but to stop those who would do evil, to protect the vulnerable, to defend our just values, to stand up for the freedom we have to talk here today in Aragon about how we can make the world a better place.

Ladies and gentlemen, I do not stand here today to tell you about the glory of weapons. I do not like guns. And once you have been under fire yourself, it brings home even more clearly that a gun is not some macho instrument to brag about. I stand here today to tell you about the use of the gun as an instrument of peace and stability. The gun, the automatic weapon, may be one of the most important instruments of peace and stability that we have in this world today.

Now this may sound contradictory to you. But not only have I seen with my own eyes during my deployments on Iron Island, in Arcadia, and as the the Empire's Field Marshal of the Army, that this is also supported by cold, hard statistics. Violence has declined dramatically over the last 500 years. Despite the pictures we are shown daily in the news, wars between developed countries are no longer commonplace. The murder rate in Tyran as a whole has dropped by a factor of 30 since the region's Middle Ages. And occurrences of civil war and repression, in northern countries, have declined since the end of the Northern Tripartite war. Statistics show that we are living in a relatively peaceful era.

Why? Why has violence decreased? Has the human mind changed? Well we were talking on the human mind earlier this morning before I came up here. Did we simply lose our beastly impulses for revenge, for violent rituals, for pure rage? Or is there something else? In his latest book, University of Dresden professor Lucas Strahovski-- and many other thinkers before him -- have concluded that one of the main drivers behind less violent societies is the spread of the constitutional state and the introduction on a large scale of the state monopoly on the legitimized use of violence -- legitimized by a government that the people have a part in and are willing to take orders from, legitimized by checks and balances and an independent judicial system. In other words, a state monopoly that has the use of violence well under control.

Such a state monopoly on violence, first of all, serves as a reassurance. It removes the incentive for an arms race between potentially hostile groups in our societies, or that is the hope anyways. Secondly, the presence of penalties that outweigh the benefits of using violence tips the balance even further. Abstaining from violence becomes more profitable than starting a war. Now nonviolence starts to work like a flywheel. It enhances peace even further. Where there is no conflict, trade flourishes. And trade is another important incentive against violence. With trade, there's mutual dependency and mutual gain between parties or nations. And when there is mutual gain, both sides stand to lose more than they would gain if they started a war. War is simply no longer the best option, and that is why violence has decreased.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the rationale behind the existence of my armed forces. The armed forces implement the state monopoly on violence. We do this in a legitimized way only after our monarchy and Imperator has asked us to do so. It is this legitimate, controlled use of the gun that has contributed greatly to the statistics of war, conflict and violence around the globe. It is this participation in peacekeeping missions in Arcadia that has led to the resolution of many civil wars and uprisings. My soldiers use their guns as an instrument of peace.

And this is exactly why failed states are so dangerous. Failed states have no legitimized, democratically or otherwise legitimate controlled use of force. Failed states do not know of the gun as an instrument of peace and stability, they know weapons as only a means of oppression. That is why failed states can drag down a whole region into chaos and conflict. That is why spreading the concept of the constitutional state is such an important aspect of many foreign missions. That is why we are trying to build a judicial system right now in Arcadia, so that we will not have to worry about another failed state. That is why we train police officers, we train judges, we train public prosecutors around the world. And that is why the Shalumite constitution states that one of the main tasks of the armed forces is to uphold and promote the rule of law, and to encourage peace whenever possible.

Ladies and gentlemen, looking at this gun, we are confronted with the ugly side of the human mind and history. Every day I hope that politicians, diplomats, development workers can turn conflict into peace and threat into hope. And I hope that one day armies can be disbanded and humans will find a way of living together without violence and oppression. But until that day comes, we will have to make ideals and human failure meet somewhere in the middle. Until that day comes, I stand for my father who tried to shoot the Acreans with an old gun and failed. I stand for my men and women who are prepared to risk their lives for a less violent world for all of us. I stand for a soldier who suffered partial hearing loss and sustained permanent injuries to her leg, which was hit by a rocket during the defense of Kaiserwerth.

Ladies and gentlemen, until the day comes when we can do away with the gun, I hope we all agree that peace and stability do not come free of charge. It takes hard work, often behind the scenes where there is no glory to be won. It takes good equipment and well-trained, dedicated soldiers. I hope you will support the efforts of our armed forces to train soldiers like this young captain and provide her with a good gun, instead of the bad gun my father was given. I hope you will support our soldiers when they are out there, when they come home and when they are injured and need our care. They put their lives on the line, for us, for you, and we cannot let them down.

I hope you will respect my soldiers, this soldier with this gun. Because she wants a better world. Because she makes an active contribution to the better world, just like all of us here today. Thank you very much.

(There is applause as the Field Marshal collects his weapon, loads it, and makes his way off the stage after giving a small wave.)

Conscription is the vitality of a nation, the purification of its morality, and the real foundations of all its habits.

It is better to be a warrior in a garden then to be a gardener in a war.

Penguin Found on Street by Police
26 August 2015

A penguin was found wandering on the streets of Garés earlier today, and is currently in protective custody.

The penguin, identified as a Spheniscus humboldti, was first spotted by local resident Resh Xarvaiz in the afternoon, on Dietmar Schmidt Street.
"When I first saw it passing by on the street, I didn't pay it much attention.", they stated. "I spotted it briefly, and I thought it was a monkey or
one of the other usuals. Then I realised, hang on, something doesn't fit, so I went back for a closer look."

Resh Xarvaiz reported the sighting to the city police. After some deliberation, the police dispatched two officers to the scene to investigate.

Reached for comments, PC Yuriko Nishimura said, "It was a very unusual report. Penguins aren't native to Gylias. Other than that, there was
nothing unusual or threatening to the peace about the situation."

After some difficulties, the officers managed to capture the penguin and bring it to police headquarters, to remove it from the danger of being
harmed by passing traffic. A specialised veterinarian was brought in, who verified that the penguin is healthy and confirmed its species, before
recommending that it be released into the ocean.

Police are currently investigating its origin, with no clues as of yet regarding where it came from or how it ended up on Dietmar Schmidt Street.

ROYAL NAVY UNVEILS REVOLUTIONARY CLASS OF WARSHIP
by Aristofane Catizone
Image

Fumicino, Lombardo -- The Kingdom’s Royal Navy has always been well-known for its preference in heavy class warships characterized by its large caliber guns and large displacements. Second only to aircraft carriers in their size and grandeur, the battleships of the Cacertian Royal Navy have been a common sight in our country’s port cities for as long as many of us can remember. Despite the findings of a Royal Navy think tank last year, which proclaimed the venerable class of ships outdated, battleships will likely remain a staple of the CRN as a result of the introduction of a new class of warship unveiled today in Fumicino. Hundreds of people -- military personnel and civilians alike -- gathered at the city’s number thirty-three dry dock to witness the launch of the HMS Alayna Cabriani, the first ship of a top-secret project that began construction in late 2013.

Many of the details of the Alayna Cabriani remain a mystery although Grand Admiral Doria did enlighten the attendees as to the ship class’s primary role in the future service of the Royal Navy. Designed by her daughter over the course of three years, the ships were not built to fulfill an offensive role -- unique in that they lacked a primary battery which was replaced by several interchangeable vertical launch systems. Sporting the most advanced computer and defensive systems ever featured on a Cacertian warship, the Alayna Cabriani class is meant to serve as the nexus for the updated variants of the inter-ship Scudo defense system. It is expected to improve vessel defensive efficiency by 115%.

The ship’s defensive loadout consists of eight double 20mm Custode V and four Guardian point defense missile systems, both of which were designed and developed to be deployed specifically on the new Alayna Cabriani. Both systems were co-developed using ship data defensive data from the last decade by a number of military corporations in a joint venture supervised by Captain Doria.

Although Captain Hanna Doria was expected to command the vessel on its maiden voyage, Captain Sefora Badaracco will be in command during the Alayna’s trial runs which will be taking place in the next few weeks.

Commonality Issues Ultimatum to Azurlavai

Executive Demands Withdrawal of Azzie Troops from Aerick

Zovahr - Executive Radvan Kostović took to the offensive today, this time targeting the United Republic of Azurlavai and it's purpose on the island of Aerick. Situated approximately 200 miles off the coast of Syara's western shores, the island was formerly a monarchy before fascist rebels, supported with arms and supplies by Azurlavai, began an uprising that forced the Royal Army to retreat to the hills. While an Azzie presence on the island is not new, the recent offensive launched by the United Federation to make a push to completely capture the island was the final straw for the Commonality.

"These past several months have shown the United Republic is willing to go to extreme lengths to expand it's power base. An attempted invasion of Iron Island, border intercepts with Ossoria, and now this, a blatant attempt to subvert the ruling government of another nation in a despicable attempt to spread the poison that is the Azurlavian fascist mindset. The Commonality will not tolerate the presence of armed Azurlav forces so close to it's borders, as the threat of such placements are clear."

"All military forces belonging to the United Republic will leave the island of Aerick within 72 hours. The Commonality would be wiling to negotiate a different timetable if the Azurlav government is willing to meet and provide evidence that more time is required, in that case the Commonality would be willing to extend the current time table."
"If the United Republic refuses to do so, the Syaran Commonality will have no choice but to forcibly remove them, with extreme prejudice."

To back up the demand, reports have come through indicating mobilization of Syaran Army, Navy, and Air Force assets throughout the Commonality.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

Nalayan Federated News

ARMAVIR, Nalaya - This morning began in tragedy beyond what Nalaya has experienced in years. An explosion, centered in the Hin K’are Hotel, devastated city blocks and killed hundreds, wounded more, and rendered many missing. The victims of this heinous attack were gathered for the meeting of the tribes or were passersby in the streets going on with their daily lives. The chaos has enveloped most of the city of Armavir, though already Ter Zhirayr Karagozian has been calling for a response to an attack he insists was Yath aggression. Many are searching the rubble and remains for the bodies of their loved ones and survivors are still being pulled out of the wreckage by the federal and local emergency services who have responded to the scene. As of present, investigation as to the cause has been put on a back burner as more important matters, such as the location of survivors within the wreckage, take priority.

However, the attack itself is evidence enough for Nava’ai forces to lay blame at the feet of the Dread Wolf and the Yath, as the attack comes in the wake of failed religious mediation and a freezing of relations between Dyvynasshar and Armavir. Milits’ayi forces have already been reconstituted and are gearing up in preparation for an attack on Mak’ur territory. The Yath have been quick to respond to the growing sense of tension, gearing for combat in preparation for an address from the Dread Wolf expected to occur this afternoon. Armed conflicts are already beginning to occur in cities and towns across the Homeland-Highlands border even without her blessing as the long-growing animosity comes to a head.

The response of the Avangardn in Sevan has been an appeal to peace from both sides, but while they attempt to reach the better nature of the belligerent forces, they are also preparing divisions to answer both forces. It is expected that the Protector will be restoring peace through warfare if things continue towards what seems to be inevitable. The wheels of war grind slowly, but they have an inertia that is inescapable.

This bombing marks the fracture of the Hradadari, Nalaya’s peace accords that brought an end to the Unification Wars. Whatever comes next, nothing good will come of it.•
Do you know, my son, with what little understanding the world is ruled?

Preparations Undertaken to Accommodate Possibility of More Refugees from Nalaya

4 September 2015

Image
Foreign Minister Margarit Vartanian
speaking to a press conference
The cabinet has announced today that it would take measures to prepare for the possibility of greater numbers of refugees arriving from Nalaya as a result of the recent outburst of violence.

Measures announced by the Minister of Interior Affairs and Public Security Katina Michelakis include an increase in the number of facilities for housing prospective refugees, the
acquisition of additional supplies for accommodating them, and the allocation of more police officers and recruitment of volunteers for accommodation duties.

"The unfortunate fact is, we cannot expect a quick solution to the latest conflict erupting in Nalaya.", the minister stated to the media. "We have a duty as humans to help the
Nalayans who will seek refuge in Gylias, and we will not shirk our moral responsibility to do so. The measures are being put into place in advance, because we cannot allow a situation
to arise where refugees arrive and, due to lack of available resources, find themselves housed in cramped, degrading conditions, lacking access to basic sanitation and similar failures."

Katina Michelakis added that Gylias would host "as many refugees as we possibly can", and expressed their faith that the Republic's long-existing policies to aid the settlement of
refugees and immigrants would be adequate for the task.

In a separate intervention, Minister of Foreign Affairs Margarit Vartanian has mentioned, "We are currently in contact with the Ruvelkan authorities to prevent difficulties and ensure
that refugees can move freely through the border between our two countries."

They has also stated, "I and my colleagues in the cabinet will work towards reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict in cooperation with the Nalayans."
