First Class of Raiding Hall of Fame

Postby Jakker » Wed Jul 08, 2015 6:54 pm

Over the last week, RaiderCon has played host to dozens of players coming together to discuss raiding from various angles and perspectives. It gave a chance from many to think critically about raiding, be nostalgic about the past, and reminiscence of the future. I want to thank everyone who helped make RaiderCon so special: the many people who helped make it happen for months prior (I'm looking at you TBH), the wonderful speakers who spent time sharing their valued opinions, the diligent judges of the Raiding Hall of Fame, and the 100+ attendees who took it all and accumulated nearly 2,000 posts on the forum.

Over the next couple of days, I will post an official closing speech that will be posted here as while as the forum. The forum will remain open for people to still post and share ideas.

One announcement I'd like to make now is the first inductees into the Raiding Hall of Fame. Over time, an off-site forum will be created as a space to honor all of the inductees and a committee will be created to help decide on future judges and ensuring that the important gameplayers of history are not forgotten. Until then, please help me welcome the first class of the Raiding Hall of Fame. To be honored into the first class shows that these players have been some of the greatest contributors to raiding. Please remember that this is the first class and there were naturally several deserving players that were not inducted. In time, I am confident that we will see many more fantastic players grace the Hall.

We had two nominees that received a tie for sixth (still gaining the required percentage of votes), so both will be inducted. They are powerhouses of raiding history and I stand here in awe as I announce these seven players to you.

First Class of the Raiding Hall of Fame

Red Back: Without the incredible efforts of RB, The Black Hawks would not exist today. He was the second founder of TBH and has served as the Commander for nearly a decade. He has contributed to several notable raids include Forest many years ago that reignited TBH, and most recently, serving as the sleeper for the raids of Hippiedom and Hell. RB is respected by all players and represents a role model all raiders should look up to.

Savaer: He was a powerhouse in raiding and for Unknown, serving in several leadership positions. He helped keep pure raiding alive during the post-NS2 era when nearly all raiding organizations were inactive. He contributed to several large scale raids including organizing or helping other Incognitan officers organize successful hits against major historical defender regions including Anticapitalist Alliance, Allied States of Euroislanders, and The Proletariat Coalition.

Evil Wolf: EW showed that pure raiders could be more that just players who raid. The second founder of LWU, EW has been one of raiding's leaders with raids including Lazarus and Anarchy, helped destroy Nazi Europe, and has served as delegate of TNP among other leadership positions. EW's political and strategic efforts has set him apart for years.

Of crazed: OC has been a bridge for many modern raiders of the past. He has had many impressive feats as a former Field Marshal of DEN including helping to lead the raid of The Rejected Realms with Taijitu, the Novus Orsa raid, and serving as the sleeper in the Catholic raid in 2012. OC has shown raiders time and time again how to be an outstanding, whole gameplayer.

Gest: Gest has served as a keystone in raiding over the past four years. Without him, TBR and now the current DEN would not have lasted to become one of the premier raiding organizations in NS history. Under his leadership, long standing occupations and countless tag raids have occurred. Gest is a shining example of sturdy consistency and a strategic leader in raiding.

Onderkelkia: As a player, Onder has greatly contributed to raiding over many years through the cooperation of several imperialist groups with raiders. He has led several large raids over the years including the 2012 raid of Belgium, which led to the raid of TRR, the first time a operation was used to overtake the sinker. Onder is a exceptional representation of a gameplayer who does not need to be a raider to positively impact raiding.

General Franks: Franks, a former DEN Field Marshal, was a raiding giant during his time who greatly influenced modern raiding. DEN's lasting reputation, in large part, is due to his efforts of bringing stealth raiding, and a visionary mind, to the group. He started The Jolly Rodger, a raiding group that solely focused on Update Raiding (something unheard of at the time). In addition, he created The Den, Ile de France, and The Old Raiding Club. As one judge commented, "He was universally loathed by defenders, and feared by natives and gameplayers alike."

Man, that is one top-tier group of inductees. Next year's class has quite a high bar set for them :)

Congratulations to all seven of you, and I'm sorry the ones who are no longer with us couldn't be here to see this honor.
Patience pays off.

We were all prepared to put him in; probably at the cost of two others.

Closing Remarks-RaiderCon 2015

Postby Jakker » Sun Jul 12, 2015 9:45 am

We sit here over a dozen years after NationStates first began and still, raiding is alive and continues to significantly impact the game. But the very nature of raiding embraces change. Everyone who participates in a raid is seeking to witness change of a region. Often, throughout the process of an invasion, I reflect on how a region is altered. From how it looked and functioned before a raid to the swift changes made during a raid including delegacy, the WFE, the regional flag, the embassies, the RMB posts, and the behavior of the natives. Even after the natives return to power, I enjoy watching the rebuilding process of the region. Those who raid enjoy bearing witness to the direct impact they have made.

I, myself, have gone through shifts in how I identify as a raider. When I first played NS, so many of raiders around me had been playing longer and had knowledge of both the game itself and the people who play it. Being in the Black Hawks was a struggle for me at times because there was so much history I did not know, and so many events before my time. I did not like that lack of control to the point where I decided that I wanted to start my own organization. I wanted to write my own history. While I was convinced to stay in TBH, but my feeling remained. I did not feel like I was a Black Hawk because I never felt like I was making the exact decisions that aligned with the region. I was not living up to its history.

When I returned to NS in 2014, the environment around me greatly changed and I had to change with it. I was the older player and I needed to be the leader in every aspect. It was intimidating to be relied upon for so much knowledge and history. In addition, I was still struggling with seeing myself as a Black Hawk. Yet, over the last several months as RaiderCon was being developed and has now ended, I have never felt more confident with who I am as a raider. From all the research of raiding history that I did before RaiderCon and during the event from all of the speaker’s insight, I was reminded that the very nature of raiding embraces change. While it is easy to be engulfed in the notion that we are experiencing things as they have always been, this is not the case. The reputation and norms of a region changes. The activity changes. And we have the power to be part of that change. Not only must we be aware of that, we must be ok with that. For it is when we open our minds to incorporating our own identity and personality into raids, we realize how much control we truly have.

All of this is to show how important it is for us to honor the past, present, and future of raiding. We all want to bear witness to the direct impact we have made in the game. We must not forget all those who have come before us. We need to honor their contributions and to show that we are witnessing their direct impact also. We must continue to value raiding history for the former players and for ourselves. The more we know of what happened before us, the more we feel control over who we are as raiders because we realize that former players put their hearts into raiding and that gives us the validation to do the same.

Use this history as a foundation to push raiding to its limits. RaiderCon was a time for all of us to reflect on the past and look to the future of raiding. I hope we have come out of it feeling closer to raiding as a whole and those who raid, and that we are all determined to continue doing what we love.

An excellent closing address to what I would say was quite a successful conference.

And I think your remarks on "how important it is for us to honor the past, present, and future of raiding" are poignant.

In July 2009 and July 2011 I organised two "Future of Raiding Conference" events, attended by most major raiding organisations and regions, and hosted in TNI. Which as far as I'm aware has been the only real attempt to have a collective discussion amongst all those that engage in raiding from across the game, prior to RaiderCon.

Back then, this sort of gathering was quite unusual, and I didn't have a great amount of experience in hosting events. My opinion back then that the mutual back-patting culture was something to be reserved for Defender conferences, and we should look only at the future - with ruthless efficiency and focus! Thus the event was largely hosted behind closed doors, and discussion kept only amongst the list of delegates. We thus failed to realise the soft power potential of the event.

But, in the same vein as I mentioned in my speech, over time raiding has adapted to expand its portfolio of knowledge and strategies, widening its horizons. It thus makes perfect sense to leverage our considerable collective history to enhance the prestige of raiding, to match the history of our illustrious opponents. And to do that one has to reflect and honour those who have contributed in the past. So it was good to see that element, missing from FORC, taking centre stage in RaiderCon, alongside some great discussions and talks.

I know we can build on this and make this an annual event from now on.
