THE HOLY EMPIRE WC 72 SQUAD

While the nation took a long break from WCs 8 through 24, the Holy Empire is proud to be the only active nation to have participated in WC 1.

Though it pretends not to be, the nation is equally proud to have won 4 World Cup titles, three of them in the World Cup 60-69 cycle.

This World Cup, the Holy Empire is represented by:

The Imperial Opera Company

The Imperial Opera Company shall be performing Jorge Handeles' famous oratorio 'World Cup Seventy-Two' during, well, World Cup 72 - using the Holy Empire's strange (for mundies) relationship with non-linear time to perform each act and scene live as they take place (it's a very long oratorio).

Yes, this means they'll be singing live during the match, accompanied by the full orchestra and chorus of the Imperial Opera Company, who'll expect to be given seating in the stadium directly behind the imperial bench for both home and away matches [OOC: if you can't - or don't want to - accommodate this IC'ly, please TG me ahead of time so we can find a solution that works for both of us].

Individual members of the imperial team may briefly stop playing in the middle of the game when they have solo recicatives or arias (or duets/trios) to perform. They will keep playing during choruses. As the Holy Empire are the fourth-ranked team in the multiverse, this likely won't stop them from winning; but it also provides a ready excuse for upsets against the Empire; if the United North States win 2-1, both goals might have been scored during Imperial goalkeeper solo spots.

Juan Tzimisces and Simeone Di Bradini will not be singing themselves; their designated solos will be taken by members of the Imperial Opera Company singing on their behalf.

Style Modifiers / formation

Frosty football is attacking football. The Holy Empire always plays a 3-5-2 formation using overlapping wingers that turns into 3-3-4 on the counterattack.

The Holy Empire plays its home matches in the bejewelled and platinum-domed Imperial Hippodrome, the oldest World Cup venue still in use, and one of the most famous - and impressive - stadiums in the multiverse.

RP instructions:
Have fun; but don't kill anyone, and don't try and launch attacks on the Dreamed Realm - largely because you can't.

Some basic Dreamed Realm RP rules:
Remember that the Dreamed Realm lies entirely outside of Ordinary Reality, and is utterly impervious to harm from what we charmingly call 'mundies'.

Some points to remember about travel to, and playing in, the Dreamed Realm:

1) We control the nature of reality in the Dreamed Realm; reality and time are malleable within the Realm. This isn't used to cheat - all normal rules of football are strenuously followed - but it does have two major side effects:
A) Any injuries to either team in Imperial home matches are immediately healed (this is why the team doesn't have substitutes).
B) No violent or riotous behaviour by visiting fans will be tolerated, unless permission is received in advance (please file applications for violent rioting in triplicate). Any such behaviour undertaken without appropriate permission will find those responsible immediately transported back to Ordinary Reality.

2) Direct travel from ordinary physical reality to the Dreamed Realm is impossible. Some 72 hours before your away qualifier in the Empire, a team of Archregimancy monks will arrive in your home stadium and construct a portal to the Dreamed Realm. You may then use this to travel to the Empire at your convenience.

Background
Furellum is a small nation at the mouth of the Taaru sea in Atlantian Oceania. Or at least that's what it looks like. In actual fact, the vast majority of the nation is located in another dimension, connected to the Atlantian Oceania portion by a magical bridge at the top of the White Tower. Furellum is a land of magic, however this magic is connected to the land and will not work outside the country unless the user is either a very powerful magic or happens to have a source of ether on him, which is unlikely. The majority of Furellum's population is anthropomorphic animals; over 90% are mammals, with amphibians and reptiles making up the remainder. It is unclear wether the fish or birds are sentient, or just regular creatures. Humans are newcomers to the country, only arriving in the middle ages. Furellum is still stuck in the middle ages in many ways: They lack any type of electrical power or goods, or modern technology.

The country has undergone many political changes - Humans conquered the country in the name of the King of Maalvia, making it a Grand Duchy. Recent political unrest saw the fascist Corvidae party take power, but their control is being threatened by an unknown power…

During the days of the Corvidae, Special Administrator Kedzierski exiled most of the national football team and sent a team full of the supposedly superior master race, wolves. The recent turmoil saw the country forced to miss World Cup 71, and now they're not only back, but the exiled players have been permitted to return. This then, is a line-up that reflects Furellum today - politically uncertain, shaken, and fighting to regain their lost pride.

As always, the key to Furellum's play is defence. They will, if they feel threatened, drop all their midfielders back behind the line as additional defenders. Any of the four defensive midfielders can also play in defence, and may be substituted for any of the back four.

Ground
Furellum will play all their home games at Liberty Grounds. Once part of the Grand Duke's estate, that did not stop the locals from trespassing to play football on it every weekend. Since the revolution it has been a parade ground for the Corvidae party, especially as it is connected to the Administrator's Palace (formerly the Duke's palace). Liberty Grounds is located in the capital city of Altsby, on the Atlantian Oceania side of the magical bridge; while visiting teams and spectators are no longer banned from crossing into Greater Furellum, for safety reasons it is strongly advised that they do not. Liberty Grounds has no seating, so the locals have taken to bringing their own, which can range from camp stools to seven piece lounge sets.

Kits
Furellum are still wearing their "Corvidae" pattern kits, which has upset some of the players not on the WC70 squad. As always, Furellum receive their kits from Barunian company Foroni Fabrics. On the shoulders of the home kits are the roman numerals for 31 and 52, which are significant numbers in Furelese Football History. (OOC: I'll let you work out why...)

Tourist's Handbook:

1) Where is Maklohi Vai and how do I get there?
Maklohi Vai is an island group, comprising an archipelago and a truncated volcanic chain, located in southeast Atlantian Oceania. There are ferries to some other nations in AO, but those are long rides typically unsuitable for tourists. The best way to get to Maklohi Vai is by plane, most likely through Kolo Lahi International Airport. From there, there are connecting flights, roads, ferries, or trains to all other destinations in the country.

2) Will I be able to communicate with the locals?
Maklohi Vai is a bilingual nation, with 98% of the citizenry knowing both Vaian and English. Highly educated people, no matter their field, will typically learn one or two more languages, often an East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) or a major Romance language (French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.). Those working in cultural and historical fields often learn Siroyese and Samoan as well. If none of these meet your language, there are translators available at all visitor information centers and major tourist destinations.

3) Where can I stay?
There are numerous hotels and smaller hostels in and around every city. The Vaian economy is largely built on tourism, so there’s plenty of options in many places. If you need help, you can contact the National Tourism Bureau.

4) What and where can I eat?
Like hotels, restaurants and cafes are abundant in cities and along highways linking the cities. In the more tourist heavy sections of the country, as well as those more metropolitan areas, cuisine is global, encompassing a number of options from nearly any place you can think of. If you’re looking for a trendy bite, try out a Vaian fusion restaurant, the new kids on the scene. If you’re off the beaten path in other parts of the country, you’re likely to find the local cuisine more frequently. This consists largely of fish and other seafood, tropical fruit, a multitude of spices, and various root vegetables like taro.

5) Are there any religious services available?
Yes, although they may be hard to find. Maklohi Vai is 94% atheist, with the remaining 6% being almost entirely Christian, mainly Mormon and Catholic. As such, it’s not hard to find those places of worship if you’re in a big city. There are a few other Protestant denominational churches in Kolo Lahi and Totai, a mosque in Kolo Lahi, and a synagogue in Wakita.

6) What cultural norms should I observe?
Vaians are very friendly, welcoming people. If they see you looking around lost, they’ll come over and help. If they see you looking very much like a tourist on the street, they’ll wave and say hello, a gesture which you should return. It is considered impolite to not accept an offer of hospitality such as a ride to where you’re going or another offer of assistance. Do not try to pay those who help you, as this is typically embarrassing; it is better to give a sincere thanks and a warm handshake.

7) Will I be safe?
There is little to no daylight crime whatsoever, especially not in tourist areas. Likewise, if you’re going to a restaurant or bar and there are a lot of other people around, you will be perfectly safe. If you must be out at night alone, it’s safe on major roads and in the downtowns of cities. The danger lies in the rural parts of the country, off the main roads. There are opportunist theives who are not afraid to strip you of your belongings before letting you go. Murder and violent crime rates are extremely low.

8) What health services are available?
The nationalized healthcare system admits foreign patients free of charge for a one time ER visit. If you enter a hospital, costs are subsidized heavily, but do expect a bill. Ambulances run with great speed, as do the police. Dial 444 on any phone to get services.

9) Are there sensitive politics that I should avoid?
If you are not a native of Maklohi Vai or otherwise very well acquainted with its political situation, it is considered bad form to make disparaging remarks against government officials. Mild criticism is acceptable, although not warmly welcomed, and if you voice strong opinions contrary to the present political situation, be prepared for a debate. Vaians love to talk politics and love even more to engage in a intellectual debate about it, especially with someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. It is best to not be that person.

10) How is the civil rights situation?
Maklohi Vai is ranked highly internationally for civil rights, and all people are accepted regardless of any preference, with one major exception: religious fundamentalists. The Mormon population in other countries may be known for their proselytizing, but in Maklohi Vai they stay quiet for a good reason: Over 3/4 of the country identifies as anti-fundamentalist and anti-religious activism. If you hold particularly strong religious beliefs, do not share them out loud, let alone try to persuade others of them. This is a very good way to make a Vaian’s good charm flip to the opposite emotion. Besides this, there is almost no reason to be scared because of who you are.

POLAASKAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM, OFFICIAL WORLD CUP 72 SQUAD

STAFF:
Manager: Bosko Zhamaletdinov, 44
After guiding Volcano FK to the title last season, amongst other good performances in his three-year tenure, the PFA decided to appoint Zhamaletdinov to the position of manager but have still kept interim manager Otto Omirov on as a first team coach. The duo were midfield partners in Volcano back in the day, and Zhamaletdinov has decided to appoint some of his former teammates to the coaching staff., with recently retired Frans Martinsson being one of the new coaches despite them never playing together. After retiring from playing aged 37, Zhamaletdinov was a first team coach and U21 manager simultaneously for two years before being promoted to assistant for one year. At the close of that season, then-manager Darijo Simak decieded to leave and Zhamaletdinov was appointed manager, where he guided them to one title and two cups, which is adequate enough for PFA President Mikhaelo Grndstrom-Vrjak.

Zhamaletdinov’s assistant at Volcano, previously the manager of Dutch Semarland’s national team. Half Dutch Semar himself, when the gritty centre-back retired from playing aged 34, he moved back to Dutch Semarland where he managed Inter Zotanekko and FK Kemsterdam before the national team, but returned to Polaaskan when he was sacked from his national team job. Widely expected to the be the defensive coach by some, Zhamaletdinov decided to keep him as his assistant. Rather loud like his colleague, van Romker is someone on the touchline you shouldn’t mess with.

Verbon is also out with a knee injury anyway, and Dietar Markus was kept behind by his club.

The patient, reliable Heiko Blonqvist is the fifth and final striker in the squad, and will be looking to prove himself under Zhamaletdinov after Leonardsen and Omirov never really gave him the chance he deserved, with him usually starting from the bench.

Welcome to Britonisea! And welcome to the Union of Confederate Regions. We are delighted to participate in the seventy-second edition of the biggest event that NationStates has to offer, the World Cup. Britonisea is getting ready to participate in the humongous event in full detail now. Before, Britonisea wasn't a nation bothered of the World Cup and in total, probably showed 1 day's worth of the World Cup on television, however that is set to change as we enter a new dimension in both regional and international sports.

The Kingdom and football.

Runner ups in the 1st UCRRFF Cup, the whole Kingdom is looking ready and in good shape of qualifying for the World Cup. The country first joined the World Cup in World Cup 69, when we came 7th out of 8, in Group 22. Then in World Cup 70, we came 5th out of 9, in Group 11, which shocked the country as we expected a much lower result, this gave us inspiration to do better in the next championships, however Britonisea and the rest of the Kingdom decided to opt out of the 71st edition but to return to the 72nd which a much better, much improved team.

The team

Over the past few years (in the region) there has been years and years of picking the suitable players to play on the Britonish squad. It hasn't been a good journey, nor has it been an easy one. Months, and even years of qualification comes with this. Each person had to go through a series of tests to be fit and ready for the team. They had to take a writing test, yes, a writing test. This writing test is to test their mentality. Those who wrote about winning the World Cup would get low marks overall, whereas if someone wrote they aspire to win the cup by then it is most likely they will get the higher marks. Secondly, they had to go through a fitness test. This tested stamina, and how well you can play football. Most of the times, it is one on with your coach, and then a football examiner who marks you out of a percentage. Finally, you have "Play". The play part is where an examiner examines you in your play. How well you fit your role and how you play against others. This was examined during the UCRRFF Cup when they were forced to play against people from different cultures and languages, this plan was labelled a success but was also labelled a waste of time and ineffective. The founder of the three test process, Tony Beale, says "It is highly effective. We are going to go and play football for the fun of it, not to win. And from this, we have picked only Britonisea's, Aloquirbe's, Nightom's and Estogium's best players. Even the coaches are picked. If this plan fails, then you can talk about this plan however you want, but for now, let's wait." Here are the picked team.

If he received the same amount that he did with the written, he would've gotten the highest amount of marks.

A favourite of previous coach Farías after serving him well in the Under-21 team, the Olympic Squad and at Ciudad. A solid defender with an excellent reading of the game. Equally adept at centreback or fallback.

A classy, ball-playing centreback in the classical Gozan model. Ayala has both pace and poise, a combination that has made the coaching staff at the Independiente very excited indeed.

Inclusion in the national side caps a whirlwind few years for a defender who was playing in the fourth tier three years ago. Quick, skilful and possessing a wand of a left foot, the nation’s biggest clubs are watching with interest.
DLC: 12. José Antonio Caro (25) – Sportivo Soluca
Plucked from the Academy of arch-rivals Ciudad, Sportivo’s scouts allowed themselves a smug smile as the defender blossomed into a top performer. Naturally left footed, Caro provides a handy option to balance out Carrasco’s favoured three man defence.
DRC: 14. Javier Bonilla (24) – Alianza Jucaro
A right back by trade who often gets shoved into the centre during Alianza coach Barragán’s numerous tactical switches. Had an excellent debut season in the first team and now considered undroppable. The fact his father owns the club doesn’t hurt either.
DLC: 19. Jonás Jacinto (33) – Petro Mercada
Captaining Petro to a highly impressive fifth place finish has helped keep the old stager in national team reckoning despite the presence of a number of younger options. Remains a leader in the dressing room despite losing the captain’s armband.
DC: 21: José Luis Camargo (24) – Sportivo Cordova
Another amazing find from the lower leagues who has made a rapid rise to the top. Of course, at 6’ 6” Camargo was closer to the top than most. A beast at the heart of the Sportivo defence and a real danger from set pieces.

MC: 4. Eduardo Zacarías (29) – Ciudad Soluca
A midfielder with tremendous lung capacity. His box-to-box runs were a key part of Dunas Del Sol’s excellent domestic form before he was snatched up by the club from the capital.
AMR: 7. Xabier Sola (24) – Sporting San Marquez
The latest boy from the barrios to make a name for himself at the Estadio Silva. Xabier provides both pace and power down the flank but a lack of composure in the final third show that there’s still some edges to be smoothed on this rough diamond.
MC: 8. Alejandro Rodríguez (26) – Sporting San Marquez
The youth setup at the Estadio Silva has a long history of unearthing gems and the unquestionable cream of the crop and subject of this rather laboured metaphor is Rodríguez. The obvious solution to the Rodrigo Defederico shaped hole in the national squad.
AML: 11. Federico Cifuentés (30) – Dínamo Maturín
It’s entirely possible that Federico could have represented Sargossa at the Olympic 100m, such is the pace hidden away in his diminutive frame. A real terror for opposition fallbacks, although a consistent delivery shy of being genuinely world class.
AMRC: 15. Flavio Freitas (32) – El Nacional
A tireless attacking midfielder whose impressive work rate and never say die attitude make him a firm favourite among Gozans and neutrals alike.
MC: 16. Germán Sauseda (31) – Ciudad Soluca
Midfield playmaker with a prestigious range of passing. Sauseda stood out in a fairly average Porto Alegro Azul side that consistently punched above its weight. Brought to Ciudad by Ernesto Farías during his spell in charge.
DMC: 18. Mateo Olmedo (31) – Alianza Jucaro
The latest in a long line of talented midfielder anchor-men produced by our mighty archipelago. Prone to nosebleeds if he crosses the halfway line.
DMC: 22. Tino Devesa (25) – Dunas Del Sol
Another of those midfield battlers we seem so keen on developing. But unlike some of his illustrious predecessors Devesa also possesses excellent technical and isn’t prone to feeling all feint if he stumbles into the opposition half.
AMLC: 24. Julio César Merino (28) – Dínamo Maturín
A top assist provider in the domestic league and one dangerous crosser of a football. Dínamo have been fighting of suitors for the midfielder for years.

FC: 9. Federico Noyola (31) – Sporting San Marquez
Yet another gem unearthed from the barrios of San Marquez and polished by ‘El Academia’. Has an uncanny knack of being in the right place and the right time and has proved a scourge of SuperLiga defences because of it. Has replaced Federico Ferreyra as the penalty area predator.
FC: 10. Stefano Bustos (34) – Sportivo Soluca
At 6’4” the experienced Sportivo targetman is a real threat in the air and adds the perfect option if ‘hoof it to the big fella’ is required.
FC: 17. Miguel De Los Santos (24) – Daroca Marinos
After two years of banging in goals galore during loan spells in the Segunda Liga Miguel was given his SuperLiga baptism of fire three seasons ago and hasn’t looked back since. Now a highly coveted striking prospect that the Marinos have done well to hold onto.
FRC: 20. Saturnín Quinteros (33) – Ciudad Soluca
Big things were expected of a forward who caught the attention with a seventy four goal season for one of Ciudad’s many youth teams. Often used as an attacking midfielder at club level by Farías so more of the same could be expected.
FL: 23. Enzo Jara (28) – Sportivo Soluca
An out-and-out winger who offers pure pace down the flank. Capable of tying opposition defenders up in knots but often lacking composure in the final third.

Goalkeeper
Kendrick Hannon retains the #1 jersey, after some decent performances for Watford FC and the national side in recent times. Gordon Watson will remain as second choice goalkeeper, a useful experienced backup choice in case Hannon is injured or suffers a dip in his performance. Leland Winchester is now the 3rd choice and Fraser Farsley the 4th choice, although it is unlikely that either of these 2 will be called into action. If they are, it would be a debut for these players.

Defence
Jonny Gregor remains the left back, Ryan Franks remains the right back, but there is a change in the middle. Armando Westberg takes the #4 jersey, lining up with Elmo Dowling in the centre back position. On the bench there is the experience of Ryan Warthon and Steven Shields. Keven Sproull is also available to drop in as a left back or a right back. Young Teddy Eatman gets the call up to sit on the substitute bench, impressing enough for Bovingdon FC to merit a call up to the national team. As a centre or right back who is defensively minded, it will be interesting to see how he fits into de Rosso's system. The old but wise Sacha Singth and new boy Brian Pendleton make up the 2 reserves for the team.

Midfield
Tommy Deer continues as the defensive midfielder with the #6 jersey. Ahead of him, Reuben McBee takes the #7 jersey now, with Garry Oldfen alongside him at centre midfield. Ahead of them as the attacking midfielder is veteran Samuel Harris, now becoming wiser with his experience. On the bench, Mitchell Tavern returns to the national side after along absence. Hobert Capp remains on the bench, and Shirley Ortiz and Kyle Kerney return. The reserves are Aaron Smith, dropped after struggling in domestic competitions, and Armando Rubi, a young player already doing well at club level.

Attack
Mario Mannetti and Ignacio Peréz continue to front the Hornet's attack. The pair can be a deadly combination when on their form, with 176 caps and 97 goals between them. Sitting on the bench as back up are Jean-Pierre Mons, the only player in the squad playing abroad, and Lorenzo Lanzo, Mannetti's strike partner at domestic level. The reserves are Merle Wight, who is lighting up the scoresheets for Cassio Club, and Scotty Cody, the youngest player in the squad, who has worked well with Ignacio Peréz for Hemel Hempstead FC.

The Football Association of Vilita is based at the Tivali-Ring Stadium (87,000 Seating Capacity) in the capital city of Alikki-Corra, Vilita and many National Team training sessions take place on the grounds of the Tivali-Ring. The Tivali-Ring complex was constructed as part of the Vilitan bid to host the World Cup 14 Cup of Harmony as a replacement to the former National Stadium in Lopinka that was destroyed during a regional conflict. 'The Ring' has since hosted countless international matches including high profile matches such as the World Cup 31 Final and the 40th Series 'B' Champions Cup Final.

Despite being based at the Ring, The Football Association of Vilita regularly schedule matches at arenas throughout Vilita, especially bigger matches as many of the stadiums that host Stellar Division and UICA competition matches have expanded far beyond the 87,000 capacity of the National Stadium at Tivali-Ring, which is used only for the National Team, and, domestically for the Vilitan Cup Final and Tropical Trophy matchups. An aspiring Astronaut, Zelkki Milake's sporting career took added importance when he signed for Eastal Lunar FC at the age of 16 and immediately became the clubs starting goalkeeper for the Season 41 Declasse Division campaign. Milake kept a series of clean sheets that kept Eastal Lunar in the top half of the table for the majority of the season and still mathematically in the hunt for promotion entering the final matchday. The 1-0 victory over Akisa Surta combined with a Turoki Isle draw propelled Eastal Lunar into the top two and ensured that the young Milake would be thrust into action against some of the top players in the world as a Stellar Division goalkeeper for V-League Season 42. It wasn't at Eastal Lunar that Milake would make a name for himself, however. The young Vilitan goalkeeper opened his International Career with four-consecutive clean sheet performances and earned a place as a reserve player on the World Cup 67 World XI team. The performances for the National Team would earn Milake a transfer to Lonngeylin Coast after Eastal Lunar's Season 42 relegation. World Cup 68 Would be a coming out part for Milake who was in goal for the Jungle Cats as they lifted the World Cup Trophy for the first time in 48 editions with a 4-2 win over the Free Republics, making Milake one of the youngest starting netminders to win the World Cup. Milake's domestic career wouldn't go as smoothly, however, and after spending 2 seasons in the Declasse after Lonngeylin Coast's relegation, the World Cup winner returned to his roots, re-signing for high-flying Eastal Lunar in Season 46.

After scoring 5 times for Kiiarana during their Season 41 Declasse campaign, the youngster made the switch across town to Kiiara-Torra in order to re-unite with Eel-Cat things head coach Nycflala Kater and return to the Stellar Division. The magic never came through, however, and eventually, Riazen returned to the Stellar Division by transfer - to Arcticala Inlet

Known as the newest Stadium of the state named Capital (named that way because of Matekkipper, the country's capital), the Estádio Nacional Rei Mateus I was named after the first king of Matthewsiana, known for both his bravery and his strength. Sadly, the king died a good while ago, leaving the throne for Rei Mateus II. Needless to say, the stadium is pretty robust as a homage to its' namesake on his hey days. It's also the home of sorta-relevant Matthewsianian team CME, formed as a splinter from Rei Mateus I's favorite team, Real Matekkipper; and the actual Real Matekkipper. They end up sharing the venue as a result.

The Euran Football Association’s 72nd World Cup Qualifying Squad

Manager: Steve Thompson (52, Eura)

All time Euran record appearance holder Steve Thompson, with 301 caps to his name and 75 goals, was made Euran manager amidst much fanfare ahead of the 20th Copa Rushmori and qualifying section for the 71st World Cup. By beating Tom Benedict, several other former Eura internationals and international candidates to the post, Steve had set himself up with the tough task of helping Eura recover from three consecutive poor performances at World Cup finals. Eura seemed to gain more defensive stability and ruthlessness under Louis Watson in his short spell as Thompson's predecessor, but while they dispatched of the minnows easily they underperformed badly against the higher seeds, and then fell apart in the group stage. Only a deserved draw with Valanora salvaged any pride as the respected but not highly rated Watson bowed out of international management. However Thompson turned things around with a surprisingly good performance at the 20th Copa Rushmori, though once again they came up just short of finally winning it - Eura continues to be perhaps the biggest underachiever in the tournament. His Eura side made it to the final before falling to an unlucky defeat in extra time against Sargossa by the score of 2-1, despite a headed goal from Craig Gilbert.

Many questioned whether or not this form would translate into the World Cup, and Thompson's side proved the doubters wrong. Their initial qualifying charge included a number of good wins including victories over Semarland and Mangolana, interrupted only by a frustrating draw in neighbouring Szavoda. However a loss away to the top seeds Royal Kingdom of Quebec, followed by draws against Semarland and Sandwich Territories, temporarily derailed Eura's qualification hopes. Thankfully Thompson turned it around, and powered on by veteran Skorji Oslograd's goals, they qualified. At the World Cup itself Eura finally broke their chain of group stage embarrassments, beating co-hosts Yttribia and the ever potent Farfadillis; their last game was an ignominious defeat to Star United States but they made it into the next round anyway. In the Round of 16 Eura encountered their qualifying rivals Royal Kingdom of Quebec and proved to be their bane once again, beating them 2-1, before beating Turori in an absolute thriller on penalties. However Eura's surprise advancement into the later stages was ended in the semi-finals by Rushmori rivals Pasarga, the goals of Brigham's Dominik Mauer sinking the Euran's despite Skorji Oslograd's 100th international goal. Eura's performance in the 21st Copa Rushmori was less admirable as they stumbled through the group stage before an undeserved quarter final exit to Taeshan, but they will be confident about their World Cup chances after the performance of last cycle. However with key players aging and Skorji Oslograd retired, can Eura repeat their heroics of last time?

Assistant Manager: Matt Boyce (52, Eura)

Boyce was a surprise appointment as Thompson’s assistant, having been out of coaching roles for a couple of years. However he has plenty of experience at various clubs and the national team before that and his appointment has been responded to positively. It is expected that he will play a pivotal role in maintaining Eura’s improvements at the back, while his bubbly personality and reputation as a leader will make him a valuable asset in the dressing room.

One of the biggest changes to the Euran squad isn't even a player being dropped or called up, but rather a changing of the order. For the first time since World Cup 66, Chris Waller is not starting qualifying as the leading goalkeeper. Waller was injured in warm down training shortly after his fifth consecutive World Cup as first choice and he did not play at the Copa Rushmori, while his early Season 25 returning league form has not been great. Subsequently Ben Prince finally gets his breakthrough as starter ahead of the previously unbeatable Waller after several excellent years at Revolutionaries, though Carl Brommis will be wondering if he will ever get the chance to be number one.

Stan Graham's short but long awaited and decent stint on the international scene has come to an end, opening up a space in the roster while Derek Millson and Charlie Harris retain their places on the basis of club form alone for now. Robbie Faulkner, finally capped after some very successful years at a top side (Urbanista in Apox), might be technically near the bottom of the centreback selection as numbers go but he will certainly be challenging to be the number one backup centreback. However he will have to meet the challenge of Ulsa's young and exciting centreback prospect Frank Ainsworth, a 6ft 5in titan who looks very authoritative at the back at club level. Ainsworth is being touted as the talent that people wish Grant Davis could have been. The starting four remain the same though after some solid performances last cycle, with Gilbert at the peak of his powers and Churchilli just passing them - both are about to hit a century of caps. Other defensive prospects, most notably David Pope, will have to wait, while Rhys Gibbons will be worried about whether or not he can make it back in to the selection process.

Ryan King has lost his place at international level with 62 caps and 11 goals to his name but what Eura will be more concerned about is the aging of their midfield. Albin Oslograd has been promoted to the starting eleven as his brother retires, giving him the chance to finally show his worth. Blackthorn and Spartan are now 30, perhaps at a late career peak, though one suspects both players can continue for a few years at least. Spartan will break into the 200 cap club unless he gets injured. However Mike Adams is now nearing the end of his international career at 31 - he was always more reliant on pace than his predecessors Kane and McCroft who went on for longer and adapted their game. He already has 99 caps and 28 goals to his name and has become the world class player no-one expected him to be, after Honeybadger's shipped him off for free to Feardallis Wanderers in Farfadillis years ago as a 17 year old makeweight for the infamous Val Kylx deal. Now is his last chance to shine again, but Eura will be more concerned that their only potential replacement for him seems to be the very raw Ryan Robinson. Things are less bright for some of Eura's other older midfielders on the periphery of the team. Kevin Colbert and Joe Robel's chances are running out, while Glenn Anderson probably won't reach 100 caps as he now is 32. Danny Sullivan too is now too old to make the impact he should have made at international level. However there is some good young talent waiting in the wings in the form of Freddie Nolan, Charles Owens, Leo Hargreaves and the already breaking through Sterling Rose. At the heart of this midfield though remains the superstar Craig Sinclair, the creative workhorse of the team and potentially the biggest danger to any opponent.

The most remarkable thing about this squad is that, for the first time arguably in Eura's many years of international football, they don't have a forward that you could argue is world class. Skorji Oslograd has gone, even after he scored many goals last cycle at the age of 36, retiring internationally after the Copa with 167 caps and 102 goals. Sam Ashtree remains a capable player whp has met his potential but played second fiddle to Oslograd for too long and is now too old at 33. He might have been a £50m player once, but not any more. Liam Allen didn't really fulfill his international potential despite a decent goals to minutes ratio record and is also too old. Their potential replacements are all once promising strikers with decent domestic records who are now in their late twenties - Ben Robinson, John Mallard, Michael Simpson and the like. For these reasons alone Ashtree is going to lead the line initially in qualifying, hoping to have one last blast at improving on his 89 caps and 40 goals. Yet there is a call up, much to the irritation of the still uncapped Mallard no doubt, for Kris Campbell, a 25 year old striker playing in Farfadillis. It is believed he beat the also relatively young George Davies of Holdenberg and Sean Hayward of Falourr to selection as Thompson plans for the future.

Silvia is a native of District 2 and her father and mother both involved in the defense industries at the NUT but during the Mockingjay Revolution, they were both killed during a massive battle for the Nut. Silvia was heartbroken at their loss but she single handily took care of her younger siblings and continued to pursue her dream of joining the Peacekeepers, which later became the Republican Guard. She was however rejected after failing one of the fitness tests so she concentrated instead on starting a local league and she soon became the Team Captain for the newly created District 2 Chargers when she was drafted to serve on the National Panem Soccer Team. She may not be the strongest or tallest individual but she is armed with an incredible amount of spunk and drive that allows her to plow right through enemy defenses and score goals.

Alder Hallowood

Alder Hallowood was born in the humble District 12 to a local merchant and he lived a pretty usual childhood but when he was 9, his older brother and best friend was reaped and killed in in 71st Hunger Games when Panem was under President Snow's brutal reign. He then was forced to flee District 12 after it was bombed to ruins in 2174. Hallowood remained in District 13 until President Snow was toppled where he then moved back into District 12 with his family. He was introduced to soccer there and decided to start a small league of his own before getting drafted in onto the Panem Soccer Team. He is very agile and fast but he is also skilled at close quarters and able to maneuver the ball around tight defenses, essential when flanking the Center Forward during an offensive attack

Marcos Corke

Marcos Corke was born in District 10 to two pig farmers. His primary job growing up was to help with feeding, cleaning, and monitoring teh batch of pigs that his family was put in charge of. During the Mockingjay Revolution, his father left to join the effort but was killed in while the revolutionaries invaded the Capitol. This left Marcos in charge of helping sustain his whole family but following the revolution's victory, they received a handsome sum to pay for his father's death. To keep distracted from his grief, he became to start exploring sports oppurtunities and joined a local league where he became so good, in 2179, he played for a small club in the Capitol before getting drafted onto the Panem Soccer Team for the World Cup. He is a very accurate shooter and can shoot field goals from any angle, as well as being quick and evasive, allowing him to take side passes from the Center Forward and score a goal.

Beth Griswold was born in District 13 before the Mockingjay Revolution and she was very immersed in the military culture of the District. Her father was a mechanic and her mother was a nurse while in school, Beth planned when she came of age to serve as military photographer or spy. When she was 16 however, she instead was put in charge of organizing a brigade of young volunteers to help police District 13. After the Republican Guard came to power in Panem, she enlisted in their ranks as a military police officer at the age of 18 but she was discharged after accidently killing a bystander. She then pursued a career in sports and after trying out in a tournament at the Capitol in 2179, she was drafted to the Panem national team. Her military training makes her a very focused individual and she has impressive reflexes, usually being able to intercept the ball quickly and send it back or block it. She also is very ordered which makes following the team captain's command very easy

Mattie Jones was born to a family who was in charge of maintaining genetic purity for the cattle in District 10. She spent most of her young life learning about agricultural practices in school but a career in agriculture did not fascinate her. On her free time during recess, she and her friends played many games together and after the Mockingjay Revolution, she and her friends organized a local league to play soccer. Being very athletic, she excelled at the top of her league and she did so well, she was drafted into the Panem Soccer Team in 2180. Being the youngest player on Team, Panem, she brings an unparalleled dose of youth and vigor to team Panem, one that helps energize the game. Being one of the center midfielders, she has quick reflexes and quickly adapts to any scenario.

Maria Hope was born into District 10 in the heart of Panem's cattle farming industry. Since she was a girl, she was always very athletic, taking after her father who was in charge of helping capture escaped cattle and livestock. Her energetic style won her a place in a local league for girls started in District 10 as a distraction after the Mockingjay Revolution finished. She played phenomenally well and went on to train with some clubs in District 2 and played during a tournament at the Capitol, where her skills got her drafted into Panem's national soccer team for 2180. Being very energetic, she is a lethal right midfielder, usually sweeping up the ball anytime it falls out of range of the others and dealing precision kicks that rarely miss.

Layton Kenner is a life-long resident and inhabitant of District 13, his parents were both involved in the medical corp but from a young age, Kenner wanted to be in the military and he enlisted at the age of 16 in District 13's army that was rebelling against the Capitol. He was then involved in multiple missions including the invasion of District 2 and the Capitol during the Mockingjay Revolution. However, during attacks on the Capitol, Kenner received a bad leg injury that resulted in him being retired from the militia and put on desk detail. He eventually recovered and tried to stay active through playing sports like soccer and football. Eventually, he tried out for the football team but wasn't drafted, but he was successfully drafted for Panem's Soccer Team. Kenner's military training and fitness have made him a valuable asset on the soccer field and as a left midfielder, he is very good at getting to the ball and moving all over the field as needed, but his leg injury still flares up now and then.

Aspen Hagerdraw

Aspen Hagerdraw is a native of District 7 and ever since he was born, he wielded an axe, mostly cutting down lumber for use in District 7's main industry. However, when the Mockingjay Revolution began, he joined the revolutionaries in attacking Peacekeepers across District 7 and after their victory, he joined the local peacekeeping forces in District 7 to help keep the peace. One of his collegues got him interested in sports and he tried out soccer, discovering he liked it. His powerful build made him an ideal player and after participating in a tryout at the Capitol, he was drafted to the Panem Soccer Team. His large build makes him an almost impassible barrier in front of the goal and many times, he serves as an assistant to the goalie, although he can provide power kicks that direct the ball far across the field from Panem's goal whenever needed.

Pine Greenlee was born into District 8's industrial life and at a young age, she was put to work in the factories. However, Pine was a very energetic girl and she would frequently go for runs while also playing a crude version of soccer with a cloth ball. When the revolution happened, Peacekeepers invaded and Pine was given a weapon and joined the local defense militias. Her service was never needed though and after the Revolution completed itself, she went back to trying to encourage the youth in her District to get out an exercise and decided to start her own sports club. She participated in the tryouts at the Capitol mainly to impress her pupils but she was actually chosen and drafted. She has a good athletic frame and is very good at judging the distance of a ball and its trajectory. She is a very valuable assent in keeping the goal's right flank safe.

Julia Brandon was born into District 8's industrial environment and for the early part of her life, she was a sickly child. However, her mother encouraged her to get outside and exercise but the bad air did not do her any good. After the Mockingjay Revolution subsided, she immediately headed off to the Capitol where she got odd jobs here and there. She was also introduced to sports and soccer and she began to play enough where she then tried to get into a league in District 2. However, she was unable to and instead headed to District 8 where she got into their local league and then was summarily drafted into Panem's soccer team. Being athletic and fast, she is a primary asset up close where she is good at keeping the ball as far away from the goal as possible.

Directions from the airport: Take the avenue going towards Calle Deportes. When at Calle Deportes, go about three blocks, and there is the stadium. This stadium is very near to StadiumSangti. Alternatively, there are buses that go directly from the airport to the stadiums in the capital.
Details: This newly built stadium was originally designed by Kytleran company BNW Varin. However, the inability of the company to built the stadium in time for the World Cup 66 qualifiers meant that the contract had to be passed to other capable companies. The local builder company Vilalobos Corp stepped up and constructed the stadium in time for the World Cup 67 Qualifiers. This stadium took over hosting of national team matches and hosting of the Copa del Barangay final and Supercopa Maharlika from Estadio Ferdinand Marcos, now known as StadiumSangti. The 100,000 capacity stadium has goal line technology installed in the natural grass pitch. Since this is a relatively new stadium, the government of Mazda Senina invested heavily in installing up to date amenities and technologies for the stadium, and since the assassination of the old supremo, security has been improved, with 3,000 CCTV cameras surrounding the stadium. This stadium hosted the final of the ninth Campionato Esportiva, with Taijan lifting the trophy after their 5-4 extra time win over German American States. The stadium also hosted the UICA Champions Cup 53 Final, where 1896 Ebor of Mytannion defeated Turoki United of Vilita, 1-0 to retain the title.

Kits

The Barangayan National team ended its kit deal with Kirola Sports at the conclusion of the 71st World Cup. They acquired the services of Libertad Sportswear Multiversal to provide the kits for the Agilang Dilaw.

Home kit will remain yellow, with black shorts, instead of an all-yellow configuration from the previous four World Cup campaigns. These shorts are still available as an alternate. The away kit is black, with yellow shorts, with black shorts as an alt. Keeper kits will be all-green with yellow trim.

Yes, it still is an all-female team. As I’ve explained before, this is because the main ball-game that's traditionally been played in Bears Armed is actually a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] the professional league for that sport is all-male and so some of the female players decided that switching to Soccer — and trying to establish a professional league for that sport for themselves instead — might be a viable alternative: They were right, because that professional league was founded shortly after WC44 and so has now been in operation for well over an eightSquared of years.

All of the players are actual Ursines (i.e. anthropomorpic, bipedal Bears)], except for any whom I actually specify as being members of other ‘peoples’ instead. The Harr'aynau people are physically human (more-or-less, anyway, although inclined towards heavy builds & hairiness), but are spiritually & culturally Ursine instead.

According to Bears Armed’s timeline, the qualifiers for WC71 take place in 2115-2116AD, and the Cup proper in 2117AD: All figures given here for people’s ages and lengths of experience are the values applying in the first of those three years.

Godmod Other Events: Y, I suppose, at least as long as you do so in an AMUSING way... but please remember that Ursines are fully sapient beings, as much as Humans are, not instinct-driven animals. Oh, and of course female Ursines are not sexually interested in Humans (of either sex), and it's very unlikely that female Harr'ayanau would be either. Please don't have them run amok or outright revert to animality, without checking by TG first, don't make assumptions about their views on politics or religion, and don't do anything that would make more than one of them incapable of playing in their next game...

Kit: This incarnation of the team will normally wear the usual set of designs (from ‘ediraf’) that the Belles have favoured in the past, with the ‘Association’ badges correctly staying ‘BAAS’ rather than [the now obsolete] ‘BAMAS’. See "here" for details.
Bears Armed has traditionally used base-8 arithmetic, for several reasons, and this has affected the set of numbers used for this team’s players: The numbers “22”, and “26” have been left unassigned out of respect for wearers who went to their deaths as heroines during various conflicts. This was formerly the case for “10” as well, but in that case the return to play for [a version of] Marra SunDaughter — who was that number’s original wearer — has seen the return of the number [although probably still just for her use] as well.

Home grounds

1/. Wimbley Stadium:[/b] Located a few miles to the north-north-west of Council Groves (our capital city), to which it is connected by rail as well as by road, this stadium was built from scratch — on part of a former Confederal Army base’s site — shortly before the qualifiers for WC52 began as a replacement for the Bear-Belles original “home” at ‘Plumtrees Park’ which has now been demolished. Its current capacity is approximately 60'000 for Ursines: Fitting about 40’000 humans into the visiting fans' half should be possible, and so that's as many as we'll let into the country. Accommodation for visiting teams & their staffs will be provided in a new hotel, less than a mile away, which has staff who are accustomed to dealing with Humans as well as with Ursines. The various other hotels in that complex and those at Council Groves can now provide about 12’000 rooms at a time, at varying prices, although of course some of those may already have been booked by people who have nothing to do with the Cup. Accommodation (at a fairly basic level) for up to 15’000 supporters will be available, at reasonable prices, in students' residences for the National University’s campus in that city: if any more than all of those facilities put together can house want to attend a match then they’ll have to borrow space in the area’s remaining Army camp instead...
There are still no direct inter-regional flights into Council Groves, so that visitors will have to travel by way of one of our neighbours and then continue onwards by one of the limited number of "local" air-flights or by rail. (People planning to arrive by rail will still have to travel via the nation of Mikitivity, but extra services will be organised on that route...)
This site will be used for most, but not all, of the Belles' home matches. During the first half of WC72’s qualifiers that will be the games against Kumbhalgarh, Garifunya, and Valladares.

2./ ‘NorthLands National Stadium’: Located at NorthPort, the most cosmopolitan city in The Ursine Northlands, this facility was originally built for use by the 'Northbears' WC49’s qualifiers. Unfortunately the place has since seen rather less use than was originally hoped, but it is still in good condition and will hold about 43’000 Ursines or over 60’000 humans (or, of course, proportionate numbers of a mixture of those two species) because it was deliberately built to be rather larger than 'Plumtrees Park' which was then the Mainland's 'national' stadium…
This site will be used for some of the Belles’ home games, at least for the first-leg qualifier against Kernansquillec, and maybeso also for some of their friendlies & matches in other Cups during this period as specified separately.
Foreigners coming to this stadium may either travel to the ‘Mainland’ and then continue hence via a set of ancient [& probably magical] ‘Gates’ that link the country’s two sections — completing their journey by either rail or riverboat after that — or take ship directly to NorthPort.

NOTES

Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate than humans on average, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have [slightly] poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole (although the members of both Clan Gunnar and the Sun Clan are generally an exception to this rule, and the eyesight of the latter group is actually often at [slightly] better-than-human levels instead), so long-distance passes & shots at goal will tend to be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their typical size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human — as well as a very skilled one — to tackle them successfully (or, at least, one who has reasonable experience of playing against Ursines…), which should balance that factor pretty well. They don’t jump very well, but then they’re generally rather taller than most Human players to start with so they shouldn’t need to jump as often in order to intercept [relatively] high shots...
Ursines are physically robust, of course, which means that they're much less likely than humans are to suffer injuries in falls or collisions. The females of this species are more even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just "dumb beasts". They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain. ‘Northlanders’ are maybe not quite as "civilised" as the 'Mainlanders'… or, at any rate, that’s the traditional stereotype..
Cold weather should pose no problem to them, even if there's snow or ice on the pitch, but tropical heat might prove awkward...

Unless our hosts at the match in question object, this team's members (including the designated substitutes for the match in question) will perform a [fairly short] ritual that's called the 'harrdiharr' on the pitch just before play begins... This is a traditional war-dance, meant to over-awe opponents, that has come to be a customary prelude for team games as well (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...). : )
As has now been seen during various tournaments, some of our fans like to take drums — and possibly also 'Urrs-horns' [which are similar to Alpenhorns, cow-horns, or other "musical instruments", too — along to the matches…

The team is accompanied by a number of sapient Ravens, who are there both to gather information about the rival sides and to provide air cover in case of hostile waterfowl.

Nation: The Fiefdom of Cosumar

Government: Cosumar is a Fiefdom, which means Cosumar is comprised of 21 historical "fiefs". These are now effectively provinces. Cosumar's government is a constitutional monarchy and believes wholeheartedly in complete civil rights, advancing science, conserving nature and exploring outer space. Cosumar is known for being the "Most Developed" nation in Atlantian Oceania according to WA Census, and in the Top 1% of the world's developed nations. Our current ruler, King James II, has done a remarkable job of promoting progress while maintaining our unique culture and the diverse and beautiful natural landscapes that Cosumar is famous for.

History: The 71st World Cup was Cosumar's 21st consecutive tournament since its debut in World Cup 51. The anniversary was no help to the qualifying effort, which concluded with the Dragons just one point shy of winning their group. In the subsequent Qualification Playoff, they fell to Holy Republican Empire 1-0 in the away leg after drawing 1-1 at home. Cosumar qualified for six consecutive Cups (54-59) in its "golden age" of football. Cosumar's best finishes were trips to the Round of 16 in World Cups 56-59. After World Cup 59, Cosumar reached its peak ranking of #7 in the world. The National Team's gradual decline began in World Cup 60 and 61, in both of which they were eliminated in the qualification playoff despite strong campaigns. They would qualify once again at World Cup 62 in Astograth, but even that could not change the inevitable downward trajectory. World Cups 64-66 were especially painful and saw our once elite ranking dip as low as the 80s. The Cosumarite populace became generally apathetic towards the National Team and gravitated more towards the World Bowl. The ancient Farris Crowley, manager since WC54, was on the most scorching of hot seats. Cosumarites everywhere were demanding he be sacked... the glory days of his tenure a distant memory. But we stuck with him, and Cosumar began re-emerging as a force to be reckoned with in World Cup 67. A marvelous crop of young talent (including the likes of Francois Renault, Giovanni Aldinne and Alexander Pearce), now lovingly referred to as the "Renaissance Generation", restored the former sense of glory and honour to the Cosumarite colours. They led the Dragons to multiple more successful WC and CoH campaigns...though they never did manage to return to the biggest stage. They came oh so close, but it was not to be. Their biggest achievement and swansong ended up being a 3rd place medal at Cup of Harmony 62. Cosumar briefly reached a ranking of #37, the highest it had been since World Cup 63, but is now at #43 following our dud in Cup of Harmony 63. It is now up to a new, younger generation to carry the torch for the Fiefdom and continue the fight that the Renaissance Generation started.

We had rolled through our Qualification and World Cup groups undefeated and in dominant fashion - seeming destined for new heights. The Dragons led the Urchins 3-0 late and celebrations had begun, but Chalia Sajid scored a flurry of goals for an unlikely second-half hat trick to force extra time. In the eventual shootout, we would completely choke, badly missing the target twice. Complete and utter shock. Many wandered if Cosumar would EVER be able to advance to the quarterfinals and exorcise these demons. We haven't been back since...

Team: The roster consists of 24 players, 22 of which are standard human (though they have varying amounts of genetic enhancement). The remaining players (midfielder Vareza Na'Noni and winger Frazan Va'Goshal) are of the Vloo people (species homo cosumarensis), a humanoid race native to Cosumar. Please note that the Vloo have no sizable physical advantage over homo sapien players. Vloo are, on average, approximately two inches taller than humans (which admittedly can come in handy on set pieces), and they must wear different cleats due to their unique foot structure. Vloo have light blue skin and two small horns. Many Vloo's horns are mostly covered by their thick, black hair. There has always been at least one Vloo player on the team, but never more than three or four. This squad features an emphasis on surgically-precise passing and technical possession football, featuring players in some of the top leagues around the world. The Cosumarite youth movement is in full effect, with this roster's starting eleven containing our lowest average age in recent memory.

Formation: 4-2-2-2
Without the ball, the basic shape of this system is 4-4-2 with the central midfielders and central defenders keeping a rectangular shape which is being known as “magic rectangle”. This quartet will move in tandem to compress the space between them to prevent oppositions to play in between the line. The two holding midfielders have to have discipline in holding their position and taking on a primarily defensive role, because the fullbacks will be pushing forward to provide width as the two attacking midfielders move infield. These two players need to have position intelligence and good understanding of space and movement, as the system relies on triangle passing lanes and space creation. The dynamism of the 2 strikers up top are essential as they need to be able to move wide to support wing play, drop deep to link-up play or run behind the defence to stretch the play.

Cosumar's kits were prepared for the team by Meski Soccer & Sports Store of Red Blackiland for World Cup 71 and will be used again this year. The design has been applauded by for improving upon the already-brilliant WC70 design, while still staying true to the spirit of the beloved classic kits that served the team from World Cup 54 to 69. The home and away kits make heavy use of the national colours (blue, white, silver), new Fiefdom Soccer Federation logo, and the majestic Azure Dragon that Cosumar is famous for. The goalkeeper kit features hints of the royal family's colors: Gold and Green.

The Starting XI

Goalkeeper - Jakk Winterfyll - 26 -

Exton F.C

Winterfyll is the most physically gifted goalkeeper Cosumar has produced. He's only 26 and already has three World Cups as a result, though 71 was his first as the full-fledged first-choice. Winterfyll dominated in the Cosumarite Harlighet Ligan with Crawford City FC early in his career, setting a record for clean sheets in a season. Since moving to the Apox National League four years ago and earning a starting job with Exton, Winterfyll has blossomed into one of the world's elite goalkeepers. He is known for his almost psychic anticipation and springy reflexes. Off the pitch, Winterfyll plays several Cosumarite folk instruments like the vevlira and the flojagu and is a regular contributor to the annual "Sounds of Ancient Cosumar" compilation CD.

Left Back - Maynard Gorham - 26 -

Lesko Pavillion

Gorham is a strong left back who has recently stepped up his game and is currently playing the best football of his career. Has always possessed above-average football intelligence. Excellent tackler. Isn't as dynamic going forward as Tenebrosa, but is sturdier in the back. Gorham played for Cosumar U21 in Di Bradini Cup 32, and also earned three caps in World Cup 70 Qualifying. He was not named to the squad for World Cup 71 due to the better form of left back Ben Seppanen at the time. He decided he wasn't getting enough exposure at middling Jeckish club Peswick Town, and completed a risky move to Lesko Pavillion. LigAnaia has brought out the best in him, and he has earned a regular starting role for the Calanian club, drawing praise from fans and coaches alike. Off the pitch he is a dark, mysterious figure. Long black hair, which he ties up during matches. He also plays bass guitar for gothic metal band Mors Incarnati in his spare time.

Center Back - Jon-Perohlin Nodtveit - 31 -

Crisisbless

If there was ever an enigmatic and controversial footballer, it's Nodtveit. He is bald-headed but bears a thick black beard. Off the pitch he is almost always gruff and silent, hardly uttering more than a word or two in interviews. He is a member of the Luciferian Satanist Order and was a suspect in a well-publicized murder case five years ago. Some despise him, but even more Cosumarites love his dark and dangerous allure. Though divisive off the pitch, he is universally recognized for his value on the pitch. Nodtveit is the Dragons' "hard man", a disciplined defensive enforcer and ruthless tackler. His mere nearby presence is often enough to distract and inhibit attacking players. Not capable of much with the ball and lacking in pace, but he is extremely good at his specialties. After serving as a reserve in World Cups 68 and 69, Nodtveit finally had his chance to shine as a starter in 70. He made a few costly errors late in matches (stemming from either fatigue or carelessness) that cost us precious points, but redeemed himself with magnificent play in our 3rd place Cup of Harmony run. His stamina is declining, so to prevent the late-match errors that plagued him in World Cup 70, Nodtveit will typically sub out around the 60-70th minute. His ability to muscle for position (and huge head) make him a danger on set pieces around the goal. Played for OAS Roya FC in Cosumar before moving to Nephara over the transfer window.

Center Back - Robahn Akindele - 25 - Viztourzys Kolektyvinis

Akindele was a bright young talent for lower-table Harlighet Ligan club Na'Malsille Mariners for the first three years of his career. Itching for a bigger challenge in a more prestigious league, he joined forces with Cosumar teammate Felix Merchison at Buyanese club Viztourzys Kolektyvinis after Na'Malsille was relegated. He has been there for four years now. He didn't immediately adapt to the stronger competition in Buyan, struggling some in his first season, but has since come into his own. Of Sirainian descent but born in Cosumar, Akindele was on the Cosumar U21 squad for Di Bradini Cup 32 and made the transition to the senior team during World Cup 71 Qualifying as a reserve. His strong performances earned him first-choice status in the AOCAF, where he earned his first caps. He plays with an angry, aggressive edge, which sometimes leads to him being labelled as a "dirty player", but in reality it's all heart. Takes more risks than most coaches would like, but his excellent pace and recovery speed allow him to make up for the gambles. Very good on the ball for a center back. Akindele and Nodtveit seemingly have opposite skill sets, which should make them an interesting pairing to watch. Hopefully they will combine their respective skills to mask each other's weaknesses. Off the pitch, Akindele is known for being a vocal advocate of universal drug legalization.

Right Back - Tomasso Tenebrosa - 24 -

Ramusok United

Tomasso is one of the most affable people you will ever meet, never losing his cool and constantly encouraging his teammates. He is a dynamic young wingback who loves to press forward with pace, which is required often in this 4-2-2-2. Has some good skill with the ball and plays a nice cross, though it's widely thought that he hasn't tapped his true potential yet. Is also strong enough defensively to play center back if needed. Came up through the FC Kaldukosic youth system and was a regular for Cosumar U18 and U21. Completed a big-money move to Ramusok United last year and has been very good there thus far. It was a toss-up between Tenebrosa and Serra for the first-choice role. Serra has much more international experience, but Tenebrosa won the job with his positive attitude and Crowley's soft spot for Ram Utd players.

Central Midfielder - Vareza Na'Noni - 30 -

Avenida Principal

One of two Vloo players at World Cup 72, Na'Noni can play almost any midfield position due to his understanding of the game, calmness with the ball and scary combination of size, strength and pace. He made a name for himself as a RB for Cosumar's U21 squad, which catapulted him into the Harlighet Ligan, where he converted to midfield with FC Samotath. After a sustained period of success at Samotath, Na'Noni announced himself to the world with his brilliance in World Cup 69. His breakout performance caught the eye of Red Star Severny of Polar Islandstates, making him the first Cosumarite to play in a league ranked #1 in the world. Four years in the Polarian league, primarily as a defensive midfielder, facilitated even more improvement for the talented Vloo and he has been a constant fixture for the National Team over that time. He recently completed a move to Farfadillis to play for Avenida Principal. Na'Noni is known for his eye-popping tattoos, including detailed patterns of constellations across his arms, a roaring dragon on his neck, and an elaborate sunset on his forehead.

Central Midfielder - Felix Merchison - 29 - Viztourzys Kolektyvinis

Farris Crowley controversially thrusted Merchison into a starting role in World Cup 70 despite his complete dearth of international experience, but the man was magnificent, proving once again Crowley's eye for talent. He scored a goal and recorded four assists (not to mention his defensive excellence), even outshining his more famous counterpart Na'Noni at times. His resume was already impressive though. At age 21, he was winning Harlighet Ligan championships with Mallox in Cosumar. But somehow, he flew under the radar of the National Team for years. After excelling as a defensive linchpin for Viztourzys Kolektyvinis in Buyan, he finally got his chance. Merchsion has a very well-rounded midfielder skill set. A very physical defender, he also embraces the dirty work - making him perfect for the holding role expected of the two central midfielders in this 4-2-2-2 "magic rectangle" system. It often goes unappreciated, but Merchison's strong defensive presence is vital and allows others to go forward. The Na'Noni-Merchsion midfield tandem has served Farris Crowley well over the last two World Cups and should do so again.

Left Attacking Midfielder - Ole Öhman - 28 -

Sabrefell Athletic

Ole is a winger of great skill who has gained recognition as one of the best at his position in the world at Sabrefell Athletic, helping the club win the Nepharim Premiership and Nephara's first Globe Cup. Producing goals is what he does, and he does it well. Öhman is very good with both feet and can play on either side of the field. He joined the Cosumarite delegation for World Cup 69 as a seldom-used young bench player, but was viewed as a beacon of hope for the future. But he fell out of Crowley's plans after accepting a lucrative contract to play his club ball in Florgania, a vastly inferior league. However, that complaint was resolved when Öhman transferred to Sabrefell Athletic and was named Debutant Of The Year in the Nepharim Premiership three years later. He has really settled in there and has been a frequent call-up ever since. He scored two goals in 71 Qualifying as a substitute and notched an assist in the Cup of Harmony. Part of the reason Crowley is switching over to a 4-2-2-2 is so that Öhman can start regularly. Before, he was either stuck as a back-up for Engström or forced to play out of position. His only downside is that he doesn't have the pace required of a truly world-class winger.

Right Attacking Midfielder - Darwyn Lucassen - 30 - Garbarnia Hoyersko

Cosumarites have been begging Farris Crowley to call up Lucassen for forever, ever since he emerged as one of the most important players for Garbarnia Hoyersko at age 27. There wasn't a whole lot to work with when he arrived at Hoyersko from Na'Malsille, but he did splendid and quickly earned the admiration of Buyanese peers, fans and media. Well, the 79-year-old manager may be short of hearing, but it seems he has finally heard our cries. He has included Lucassen in his team for the first time in any competition - and as a starter! His experience and vision should be an asset. Not the most technically gifted, but has a cool head and opportunistic flair in the attack. Versatile and amicable. Has many of the same qualities as Paaron Petrov, so he should help fill the void left now that the World Cup 71 Captain is too old to start week-in week-out. Not the dynamic scoring threat Petrov was in his prime, but more than capable of orchestrating our attack with precision and setting others up in good spots. His parents are both people of science, his dad an astronaut and his mom a marine biologist, so his first name was an homage to pioneering scientist Charles Darwin. Lucassen himself has a deep love for geology - minerals in particular.

Striker - Anders Engström - 26 - CAPTAIN -

Mallox

A Cosumarite superstar in his prime who is the most dangerous weapon on the team. Engström has become the poster-boy for Cosumarite football, playing his entire career at Harlighet Ligan titan Mallox FC. He plays as a left forward for Mallox, spearheading their infamous +5 style attack. He used to play as a left attacking midfielder in Crowley's 4-2-3-1, but the new system being phased in will allow him to fill a role up top closer to what he does for Mallox. Engström has been voted Harlighet Ligan MVP multiple times (including two seasons ago, when he delivered Mallox their fourth championship) and won multiple Golden Boots with several consecutive 20+ goal seasons. A precise deliverer in set-pieces and from the flanks, Engström will be instrumental in setting up Cosumar for goal-scoring chances when he's not putting it in the net himself. Though small in stature (5"9), his ball control and nimble quickness are of the rarest variety. The only criticism against him is his apparent unwillingness to face a bigger challenge abroad. He seems to prefer the comfort of consistently dominating in his home country. But that could change soon - his contract with Mallox expires after the current season. Who knows what will happen then. He shared the team lead with 9 goals in WC 69, and displayed a more well-rounded game in WC 70 by scoring 7 goals and tallying a team-high 8 assists. Led Cosumar again with 11 goals in the WC 71 cycle. First choice to take penalties.

Striker - Ace Newman - 27 -

Urbanista

Ace Newman was a star in Cosumar with Cassandra City for years, winning the club its first championship, but he exploded into worldwide prominence with some dominant performances in WC 70 Qualifying. As the starting right-winger, was second on the team only to Sur Arora with 10 goals, and also recorded 6 assists. Could've been a candidate for Best Young Player of the tournament. In World Cup 71, he transitioned to fill his more natural role up top as the lone forward. He had his highs and his lows in the Qualifying campaign, but ultimately showed that he has what it takes to succeed there on the international stage with 7 goals. The fact that he will now have a partner up top in the 4-2-2-2 should ease the burden on him tremendously. He has always fared better in multi-striker formations. Above-average size, strength, pace and finishing - and he leverages all four really well to put the ball in the back of the net. Is at his most lethal in space, though his prowess in tight situations is rapidly improving. He will only continue to get better as he gets more playing time in the Apox National League with Urbanista, where he transferred for $12 million during the window.

The Substitutes

GK - Esteban Hernandez - 23 -

Morponte Fief

Hernandez is the latest highly-rated product of the productive Morponte Fief youth academy, a line that includes the likes of Abel Scarloff, Belarmin Worsaw and Calvin Keppeleire. This dude's frame is massive: 6"7, broad shoulders, long arms, enormous hands. Most people that size don't have the coordination to walk and chew gum at the same time, let alone take on Holy Republican strikers. But Hernandez is one of those rare exceptions. He was considered too raw to get any serious time at World Cup 71, but that has changed now. He stepped up in a big way for Morponte Fief in the Harlighet Ligan, carrying them to a record 6th-place finish in 1001 and winning U21 Player of the Year. He even placed in the top five in the MVP voting. He has surpassed Tomi Koskinen for the second-choice spot, making this the first World Cup since 61 in which the now 37-year-old keeper has not been among the Cosumarite delegation. He has the tools to eventually challenge Winterfyll for the first-choice job if he can find comparable international success. Fun tidbit: he nearly gave up on his professional soccer career at age 18 to go to culinary school instead.

LB - Jukka Lindroos - 27 - Marine Coast United

Lindroos has been one of the best defenders in the Vilita (VIL) second division for years. He dominated here in Cosumar early in his career, carrying the Centus Serpents to a promotion on a defense that allowed only 7 goals all season - a record that still stands. He was the National Team's most reliable defender in World Cups 69 and 70 despite being the least experienced. Though he will now relinquish his first-choice role due to the emergence of Maynard Gorham, Lindroos is still a huge part of the Dragons' current and future plans and will sub in often. His boyish face and long golden locks have charmed the media, but do not be fooled - he is a ruthless player on the pitch. He has great technique and discipline, and can make world-class stops in the back against the best of opponents. Doesn't have great pace or athleticism, but makes up for it with his relentless energy. Like a jolt of lightning every time he steps on the pitch. Plays a beautiful cross, though he is careful in picking his spots to go forward.

CB/LB - Arndu Farsgaard - 33 -

Cazadores Cathair

Dependable veteran defender who plays younger than his age. Was Cosumar's best-performing defender in World Cup 71, and will likely share a lot of the starts in Qualifying with Nodtveit. Originally a hockey player with no interest in a "sissy sport" like soccer, he didn't even discover his talent for the game until age 24, after failing in his hockey career. He took to the sport quickly, rapidly moving up the ranks of the Cosumarite leagues after starting with a local semi-professional team. By the time he was 27, he was starting at center back for Sekundar Ligan regulars Keenan Athletic. At age 28, he got snatched up by famous Audioslavian club Cazadores Cathair and made a big impact in LigAnaia, thrusting him onto the radar of the National Team. Just eight years ago, he was on the street after being cut from a minor league hockey team. Now he is playing in his third World Cup. Crazy. Scored three goals on set-pieces in WC 71.

CB - Peter Svensson - 21 - FC Jansberg

Standout product of the Na'Malsille Mariners youth system that moved to Semarluundik Premarligaen giant FC Jansberg at age 19 after shining in the Di Bradini Cup. He immediately impressed at Jansberg, earning a starting job and helping the club win the championship in his first season. Svensson has impressive physical might, aerial ability on set-pieces, and sends a great pass forward. These will be his first caps with the senior team as he seeks to make a positive impression on Farris Crowley and his elder teammates. He is the nephew of Herrgly Svensson, a famous Cosumarite daredevil known for skydiving out of a space station, and little brother of Erak Svensson, a Congressman.

RB - Sheldon Serra - 25 - Zenit Attawapiskat

Serra has the distinction of being born and living the first eight years of his life on a spaceship of neutral nationality. After returning to the planet and living in the nation of Indigo Plains, Serra found his land legs surprisingly quickly and discovered a natural talent for football. But because Indigo Plains does not have professional football and he was technically not born anywhere, his international eligibility was somewhat muddled. Serra attended university in Cosumar and fell in love with the country. He didn't found out until a year after moving here that he is eligible for our team because his late mother was born here. He was the Defensive MVP of Cosumar's collegiate league at age 20, eventually graduating and signing his first professional contract with Zenit Attawapiskat. He loves it in Quebec and has done well there for the last few years. Though small in stature, Serra has rare natural ability as a dynamic wingback. He hasn't quite reached the level of stardom many thought he was capable of, but the story of his career is still unfolding. Will share time with Tenebrosa, to whom he is a very similar player. Both of them have great speed and ability to play both sides of the ball, making them worthy successors to the unique skill set of Tae Woo Miyori, who has been left out for the first time due to effects of aging.

DM - Olaf Womack - 26 - Twentytwo Cacti

Bulldog of a defensive midfielder who has played for clubs such as Versiaville SC (Cosumar), Rannin FC (Nizov) and now Twentytwo Cacti in 95X. Relentless pest of a player, probably the strongest on the team (and ugliest...). Looks like 95% of his body weight is in his absolutely ripped torso. Not very skilled, but deceptively smart. Gets away with a lot and really gets on opponents' nerves, often coaxing them into yellow or red cards. Probably won't see much action unless Crowley feels the need for his very specific, albeit limited, attributes. But a worthy inclusion because there's not another player quite like him in our talent pool, so he lends some versatility and flexibility in the midfield depth.

CM - Elveund Kirumsen - 24 - Heartwood FC

One of Cosumar's most intriguing young players. A product of the Crawford City FC youth system, his name became the subject of a media hype storm after he scored a wonder goal in a Di Bradini Cup. He has not always lived up to expectations, having an up-and-down tenure at CCFC before moving to Nova Anglicana for a fresh start away from the spotlight. His passing and his understanding of timing and positioning are extraordinary, so he shows flashes of brilliance, but he struggles with his confidence. His frame is quite slim right now so he gets forced around too easily. But the talent is there. Farris Crowley is hoping that some experience with the senior team at the World Cup, perhaps even earning his first few caps against minnows, could help give Kirumsen some confidence and bring the potential out of him more regularly.

CM - Pablo Corderro - 33 -

Crisisbless United

A midfielder of true quality who has long been on the edges of the National Team radar, but finally got his first international caps in Cup of Harmony 63 and AOCAF 45, playing in all eight matches across the two tournaments. He has enjoyed a late-career renaissance with Crisisbless United of Nephara after going there on free transfer from Cassandra City after the Reds let him walk after a six season stint. Some doubted he would even be able to break into the team at Crisisbless United, but he proved his doubters wrong by becoming one of their key players over the last several seasons. He was always a solid player in the Harlighet Ligan, but the higher level of competition in the Nepharim Premiership brought something out of him that we didn't know existed. And he's still going strong at age 33. Corderro has become one of the elite Cosumarite passers in the game today and his hard work has been duly rewarded with a call-up for his first World Cup. He will be a frequent substitute, as he is versatile enough to come on at any midfield position, though he will usually sub in for Na'Noni when he plays.

AM - Paaron Petrov - 35 -

Wrexton F.C

Captain of the World Cup 71 side as the starting CAM, and has been a constant for the Blue-and-White since World Cup 68. Petrov was born on a nearby mountainous planet in the Cosumarite colony of Fevelo. Because of his close ties there, Petrov insisted on playing his club ball for Sekundar Ligan club Fevelo United for much of his career. He has also played for Fadron Flight (Taeshan), though his career reached new heights after moving to the ANL. He was named the Player of the Season in his first year at Wrexton, also being named to the ANL Best XI with 13 goals that year. He successfully rejuvenated a side that had been struggling prior to his arrival and is still going strong there. Feisty and resourceful, and a devastatingly accurate passer, Petrov is an asset when it comes to setting up the big play. He is also a threat to score from long distances, as he gets great movement on the ball and is able to keep it down. First choice for free kicks when he is on the field. He had a fantastic qualifying campaign in WC 71, notching 7 assists. The shift to the 4-2-2-2 and his ever-increasing age have left him out of the First Eleven for what will surely be his final World Cup, but Petrov is still part of the heart and soul of this team and will be a valuable impact substitute, primarily for Lucassen. His speed leaves a lot to be desired, but it's his vision and creativity that make him irreplaceable despite his age.

LAM - Mauricio Sigler - 23 - Real Atlantea

Exciting young talent who might just be the next big thing. His technical ability is superb, reminiscent of Anders Engstrom, and he's blindingly fast. Was the main reason why newly-promoted club Zakhoro Aces springboarded all the way to the top half of the Harlighet Ligan in 1001. One season later and without Sigler, Aces are currently in last. Where did he go? To a club ranked in the top ten by the UICA, Taeshani titans Real Atlantea. He has already broken into the side there and has looked good in his appearances, helping the club to what looks to be their billionth consecutive title. Needs to improve his decision-making with the ball - makes poor decisions too often. But he's still young and a great coach like Farris Crowley could turn him into a star.

RAM - Frazan Va'Goshal - 26 - Galatica

The second Vloo member of the team, Va'Goshal is a productive and well-rounded, though not quite outstanding, winger. Estabished himself at FC Kaldukosic and cashed-in in the Pasargan SuperLiga after three great seasons at home. 71 was his first World Cup, though he also was part of the "B-Team" that went to the Summer Olympics a few years ago. In World Cup 71 Qualifying, he lost his starting job to Ole Ohman halfway through as the Sabrefell Athletic man constantly outperformed him in training and matches alike. Though his National Team form has never quite matched his club form, Crowley still likes to keep Va'Goshal around because of his blistering pace. Va'Goshal is not a great shot-taker, though he is good at creating angles and windows of space with the ball. He is a true playmaker in this respect, clinical in his manipulation of defenses. He has pledged to donate any earnings in World Cup 72 to Operation Goodness, a secular charity based in Kaldukosic.

ST - Sur Arora - 36 -

Crisisbless

Arora is the most prolific goal-scorer in Cosumarite history with 100 goals for his beloved country. He has been the very best at every level of Cosumarite football he's played in, from U-18 to Collegiate to the Harlighet Ligan to the National Team. Arora is also the all-time leading scorer for Cosumar's most famous club team OAS Royal FC, and now plays for Nepharim championship contenders Crisisbless. He genuinely loves the game and has been described by coaches as being "one of the hardest workers they ever coached". Vintage Arora was so noticeably fluid in his motions, acceleration and ball control that it was almost scary. Aging has forced him to change his game since his he had the best performance of his career at World Cup 70. His pace and stamina aren't what they used to be and is prone to nagging injuries. But he is still the best finisher Cosumar has ever produced when healthy. When he gets the ball in the box, he still converts chances into goals at an astounding rate and can score in a multitude of ways. He will sub in late in close matches, looking for those clutch dagger-goals. Off the pitch he is known for his dry, sarcastic sense of humor - especially in interviews with the media.

ST - Tevin Lilley - 24 - Blacklake Blues

Lilley was Cosumar's top striker in the Summer Olympics and Di Bradini Cup 32, and has seamlessly transitioned into a productive member of the senior National Team. He was one of the Top 10 scorers in the Harlighet Ligan at only 20 years old, with 17 goals for Cassandra City (though he was clearly unhappy that teammate Ace Newman still had more). His unearthly pace and agility nearly earned him a spot on the World Cup 70 squad, but he was one of the last cuts. His feel for the game, his finishing touch execution in the crucial moments weren't quite where they needed to be. His fiery competitiveness often spilled over into recklessness. He could rely on his physical gifts to dominate domestically, but Farris Crowley knew he would run into a brick wall in the World Cup. Lilley needed to play abroad to continue his development. Though he hasn't put up the gaudy numbers in his three years in Taeshan that he did in Cosumar, Lilley has become a much more complete player according to coaches. He now has that quiet confidence and poise that can only come with experience. Put up one goal and one assist in World Cup 71 Qualifying in a few substitute appearances. He's back in the shadow of Ace Newman like he was at Cassandra, but he has no problem with it this time. Should see increased minutes this time.

Staff

Manager: Farris Crowley
After a phenomenal debut as Manager in World Cup 54, taking Cosumar to its first World Cup, and an even more impressive efforts in World Cups 55-59, Farris Crowley became a Cosumarite legend. The nation has stood by him through thick and thin ever since, even when other managers certainly would've been fired. The seemingly immortal icon was once a somewhat successful player in Cosumar's domestic league many years ago but found his true calling as a coach after retiring. His goal is absolute: bring glory to Cosumar through victory on the pitch. He is currently 79 years of age and has an unwaveringly stoic and solemn personality. If you're lucky, you might catch him with a hint of a grin for a split second after a big victory. Despite being the one who took Cosumar to new heights and qualified us for all seven of our World Cups, there is a rumor that he is under pressure (yeah right, the only thing that can remove him at this point is old age) due to yet another failed attempt to qualify in World Cup 71 despite a favorable group draw and a sizable 1st place lead halfway through the group. And with his health starting to finally show signs of decline (he can't stand for long stretches of the match anymore), pundits are questioning his capacity to lead the team for much longer. He might not have many more World Cups in him, whether he gets sacked or not. World Cup 72 has been rumored to be his final.

Assistant Manager: Kennedy Kopenhaver
World Cup 71 was Kopenhaver's second as Assistant Manager since the sacking of Truda Jotunnoj (someone had to be the scapegoat for the team's failures and it wasn't going to be Crowley). Kopenhaver, 54, was once a terrific center back for the Cosumar National Team in World Cups 55-57, back when Crowley was establishing his legacy. He was infamous in Cosumar for being one of the most passionate and fiery players ever to step on a pitch. He would stop at nothing to win, even if it meant angrily telling his teammates what's what or getting himself a card. After retiring, Kopenhaver attempted a broadcasting career but was not happy. It was too far removed from the action! He then took to coaching, and spent six years as an assistant to Alvin Burnsides, Manager of Mallox FC, the most historically successful club in the Cosumarite Harlighet Ligan. After being skipped over for the managerial vacancy at Miners 47 in Apox, he jumped on the chance to work for his former mentor Farris Crowley with the National Team. Kopenhaver should bring a lot of passion and youthful energy to a team that Crowley and Jotunnoj hadn't been able to provide. He is a rare man - physically imposing yet keenly intelligent. Deceptively clever and excels at game strategy. Really knows how to motivate players.

Stvoto Latoli's World Cup 72 Qualifiers Squad Released

Stvoto Latoli must walk on with hope in their heart after a devastatingly poor second-ever cycle in World Cup Committee-sanctioned events. Struggling to find the back of the net perhaps more than any other team in the world, it was well known that manager Brendan al Tameer was expected to make big changes or find a new employer. The Arab-Irishman cooperated duly with the TSLB, totally re-jiggering the team for the Rushmori regional championship last year in Norrehavn (Stvoto Latoli's first opponent of the qualifying stage, incidentally). The side is more technical and has more attacking threats, but it is physically weaker and physically smaller (especially in defense, which is worrying), and most notably of all, the Golden Crows' average age has skyrocketed. This team of veterans may be wise, but fitness is likely to be an uphill struggle.

Also interesting to observe is that the so-called Big Three of Stvoto Latolisi club football have radically increased their share of the pie, as it were. It is now the case that a whopping eighteen of the twenty-two men and one woman in this squad are contracted to one of Brewers, Lobyu, or Vezhidrupa, more than three quarters... and all of the starting lineup is from that triad, too. Given that the Big Three seem to have acquired stranglehold on the rest of Gu Zhahogowdoo, there are no real shocks about it, but to see things change so rapidly is a bit unusual.

Shyusoolootru Lyu is one of the few things unchanged about the Golden Crows. He retains his captaincy after yet another very good year (though his Vezhidrupa could not repeat as top flight champions). Ahead of him will be a veteran teammate of Lyu's at the All-Whites, Manu Uchatheppujaghu, and Lobyu's vaunted back line will contribute two starters as well: the previously out-of-favor duo of Leagh Gilmore and Muhammad abd al Raziq walk back into the Stvoto Latoli first team. Ahead, Satatu Bei makes good on his seemingly-now-ancient vow to return to the Gold-Whites' eleven, joined by Brewers teammate and now national-team-stalwart holding midfielder Jabbar al Amri. Numair al Farran's powerful athleticism will be used on the left wing, while Usama O'Bearga's vision, long-distance passing, and dribbling skill will grace the right. Up top, new target man Beolagh Athey will be supported by two more Chartreuse-Oranges playmakers: Heji'šagheru Eji will function as something of an enganche, slightly more withdrawn and slightly less mobile than his role in Caisleán Luaith, and Nataliaja Irmedheghi will redouble her efforts as the Maritime Empire's trequartista.

Fun-loving, boisterous, and media-friendly, it might come as a surprise to an outsider that Stvoto Latoli's current manager is among the world's most tactically conservative minds. An Arab-Irishman born in Teach Iarann, al Tameer categorically rejects the maxim that "a good offense is the best defense." Preferring muscle-bound enforcers to pace or technical ability, al Tameer grew up in his home country of Muzira'a Ba'aydah but moved to the Stvoto Latolisi capital Tobyumosyu after being selected for military service. It was there, among the Stvoto Latolisi Navy's intramural leagues, that he began to formulate his football ideology. (Incidentally, the same influences can be seen in the general instincts of the Hozastvu club side, which represents the Navy. Fans of the Maroon-Reds are often deeply uncomfortable when they witness their side venture forward for any reason.) al Tameer famously regards the nil-nil draw as a result as good as a victory, and this is in keeping with his Navy footballing education. At any rate, the Arab-Irishman generally makes selections in his own image: stocky, powerful, and often quite dirty athletes uninterested in sprinting or one-touch passing. He views tactical understanding as critical in his teams. And yet, despite all these utterly uninspiring and aesthetically displeasing attributes, al Tameer is well liked by the media, if not by the fans. Genial and warm, and with a light sense of humor, he famously enjoys (rather than resents) giving press conferences. Interviews after the many losses that Stvoto Latoli should be expected to suffer during its halcyon years as a competitive national side are sure to be as friendly and good-natured as those after the rare victory or draw. When asked what he plans to do after leaving his post as the Gold-Whites' manager, he often intimates that he might leave the sport altogether to spend more time with his hobby of woodworking. Nobody is entirely sure if he is serious or is using humor to dodge the question. There is no doubt that both Cóiméid (based in his city of birth, Teach Iarann) and Hozastvu (the outfit based on the Navy Headquarters site where he spent so much time as a serviceman) would be elated to secure his services if he ever departs his current post. However, for the time being this is obviously pure speculation.

Kits

These are the kits used by Stvoto Latoli, provided by Audioslavian sportswear manufacturer Kirola. The metallic gold and white strip is used for all home matches and occasional away matches, whereas the all-dark-blue change strip is used for most away matches but never at home. An unpaid intern in a dingy back office will toss a coin to decide which uniform will be worn in the case of neutral venue matches such as those of the Copa Rushmori, Cup of Harmony, or World Cup finals.

Teach Iarann is a very poor city on the south coast of Muzira'a Ba'aydah's Northern Territory: its once-successful date-plum and lime orchards have taken severe damage from pests over the last quarter-century and its monsoon climate makes it unappealing to outside visitors for significant portions of the calendar year. Things have gotten so bad recently that the packs of stray dogs which roam the streets are becoming a severe risk to public health. As such, it is something of a minor miracle that local officials managed to persuade the TSLB to allow the city to host several Golden Crows home qualifiers. That being the case, the actual venue itself is a marvel; the Brídget Kilkenny manages to very effectively conceal the fact that it is made of rather cheap materials (a combination of hard plastics and concrete) and its location, surrounded by jungle and built into a cliff wall overlooking the ocean, and within viewing distance of Muzira'a Ba'aydah's largest waterfall, makes it a visually spectacular place to watch football. Its stands (of which there are just two), one along the north sideline and one along the west endline, are triangular in shape, guaranteeing that most of the stadium's 21,000 seats are quite close to the pitch. Its club tenants, Cóiméid, are one of the country's better clubs, perennially competing for UICA places in Gu Zhahogowdoo.

Graha'ajat Stidiyama - Zhevassi
An all-seated stadium located in the Pazhujeb Islands, the Graha'ajat has a capacity of 96,000.

The home field of Zhevassi ZL (an old juggernaut recently promoted back into the top flight league, where they appear poised to return to power), this venue, the largest and most prestigious in the whole of the Maritime Empire, is nestled up in the misty hills east of the small town of Zhevassi in the Pazhujeb Islands. The structure is mostly from wood but meticulously decorated from pitch to stand to roof to entrance with soapstone sculptures, many of which are massive and built into the architecture. In Pazhujebi, the name of the stadium means "Stadium of the Planet," which tells a layman the sort of pride residents of the small Zahuj Peninsula village have in this grand park and in their club side. And that pride can hardly be questioned, as the stadium has played host to two Baptism of Fire finals, a Cup Winners' Cup final, and countless other prestigious events that have left the vicinity of the stadium incredibly well-developed despite the venue's relatively rural location in the forested hills of the Zahuj Peninsula - there are about a dozen pubs, as many restaurants, a nightclub, a golf course, and three large hotels right outside the stadium. Visitors will enjoy themselves, but should be warned: they will get wet... it rains a lot. Construction experts need not fear the combination of wood material and rainy conditions, as the Graha'ajat has repeatedly undergone water-resistance treatments administered by Stvoto Latolisi civil engineers.

Trogu How - Tobyumosyu
An all-seated stadium located in Stvoto Latoli, Trogu How has a capacity of 76,000.

By most accounts a tragic accident waiting to happen, Trogu How (which is Stvoto Latolisi for "Irish Lane") is a rickety superstructure in the heart of Tobyumosyu's dangerous but historic Thutrezhertrida District, home to a large Muzira'a Ba'aydi Irish immigrant population. Officially owned by the Thutrezhertrida Cultural Council and located upon the grounds of the Council-associated Irish Social Unity Center, the stadium is an infamous death trap. Constructed out of assorted timber, loose brush, tremendous sheets of fabric, and patched up with wattle and daub, Trogu How's massive Curva Sud (Italian is spoken nowhere in Stvoto Latoli, but the term has been appropriated here) stretches along the south side of the park's remarkably small pitch and seats the vast majority of the venue's capacity while the main administrative building on the ISUC campus (on the roof of which there is a steep stand where two thousand spectators can be held) lines the north side of the field. The grass of the pitch is Trogu How's major selling point - well-watered and fast, and kept in famously perfect condition, tenant club Gerthamasa Boyseh have punched far above their weight in the Stvoto Latolisi top division almost exclusively because they are able to use the stadium as a fortress, playing lightning-fast counterattacking football up and down the small pitch and felling numerous better clubs as rowdy fans watch on.

Tactics

After the Cup of Harmony failure, it's back to the drawing board for al Tameer. Actually, there's been such a big tactical revolution in the team that it's more accurate to say the original drawing board appears to have been doused in 180 proof alcohol and then thrown in a tire fire. In a massive departure from personal precedent, the Gold-Whites boss will experiment with a comparatively more-attack-minded 3-6-1. Still the Golden Crows will employ a treble of center halves at the back, but the full backs have been done away with entirely, leaving the wide midfielders exclusively responsible for the maintenance of the wings. Instead, the center of the park is now more packed than ever before, with no less than four central midfielders clogging up the interior of the formation. Finally, Beolagh Athey enters the fray as the Maritime Empire's starting number nine while Tastvu Zhooheizhyu, fresh off a less-than-splendiferous 4013 season, has been left out of the 23-player squad. Athey's age (and, by extension, fatigue sensitivity) could easily be problematic, but he's generally seen as a much better team player and is coming off a year in which he won the Golden Boot.

Information for the Foreign Reader

Stvoto Latoli is a geographically and culturally diverse federation of countries cobbled together politically if not culturally. The Maritime Empire prides itself not only on the geographic breadth of its territory but on the numerous narratives embedded into its history. Read on!

The barbaric Stvoto Latolisi people are aggressive scavengers living at sea. Likely East Asian in terms of ethnic ancestry, they typically have straight, shiny black hair. Their faces are almost always concealed by traditional makeup patterns: men wear a pattern of diagonally alternating white and metallic gold, women wear a quartered pattern of navy and blue. (Footballers, incidentally, forego this makeup while playing the sport.) Their language is notoriously difficult to learn, while it only contains twenty-some basic sounds, all words are formed from abstract relative concepts explained in hieroglyphic form. Rather than letters representing vowels or consonants, letters represent words or phrases. For the purposes of intelligibility, dispatches released for the international public's consumption will adopt an Anglicization policy for Stvoto Latolisi words.

Stvoto Latoli's background is mired in murky prehistory. The legend goes that in an ancient land, a specific group of humans, united by some unknown faith, gradually became greatly feared for their brutality, greed, and mercilessness, until some political event occurred that resulted in the religious practitioners' expulsion out to sea. These people evidently could never find a new place to live, as word of their terrible nature had spread worldwide, and no other nation allowed them to land. So the early Stvoto Latolisis simply accepted their reality, and began to construct massive wooden rafts upon which they could build a large city in which to live. A less ambitious, less devout, less fervent people might have failed in this seemingly impossible task, but they succeeded, and the maritime city-state of Stvoto Latoli was born.

Since, the ruthless people descended from that original group have become less devout; in fact, the religion they followed has been completely forgotten. But their merciless nature has not changed. Once the economy and society of this new country stabilized, the Stvoto Latolisis united to make their floating raft city more flexible and mobile, and eventually it became possible to fragment districts of the city into separate "islands" and direct the superstructure across the oceans to whatever location they preferred. They then began the process of plundering as many vulnerable peoples as they could find. A famous legend explains that the Kagdaz witch Baba Yaga witnessed one of these such pillagings. According to the story, she visited Stvoto Latoli during a time when they were conquering and destroying a race of merpeople below the sea.

In recent years, however, the Stvoto Latolisis have changed approach. (No one is quite sure why.) They have continued to conquer other nations seen as susceptible, but rather than looting and destroying these countries, they instead have looked for ways to mostly preserve the culture of their conquered possessions, while maintaining strict political and military control. They refer to these incorporated possessions as "vassal states."

Various vassal states have been won and lost in the last century. At the current present, the attentions of the Stvoto Latolisi navy and air forces have been occupied by the large vassal states of Muzira'a Ba'aydah and the Pazhujeb Islands. Their relationship with the Muzira'a Ba'aydi is moderately good; the Arab and Irish country appears mostly happy to be able to preserve their culture and avoid the devastation suffered by other possessions. That mutual amicability is non-existent, however, between the Pazhujeb Islands and their overlords. The Pazhujebis have proven rebellious and troublesome, and prison camps are filled to nearly 250% capacity.

We shall briefly explain the cultures of these two complex vassal states.

Muzira'a Ba'aydah consists of two territories, typically referred to as the Northern Territory and the Southern Territory. The large Northern Territory lies in an environmentally tropical zone, and is mostly covered by jungle. No one is quite sure why, but a group of Irish settlers have lived in the area for thousands of years. The other territory, the Southern Territory, is much smaller, and lies on the northeastern corner of a moderately-sized subarctic continent. From this state emerged the Arab people who eventually traveled to the Northern Territory, and began to peacefully settle alongside the native Irish. As these peoples united into one culture, the Irish began to emigrate the opposite direction, and by now there are more or less equal numbers of each ethnicity in each of the two territories. (Place names, incidentally, still follow the old origins: the Northern Territory is filled with towns with Irish names, and the Southern with Arab names.)

The Muzira'a Ba'aydis are quite conservative and religious. They have developed a unique religion which is organized around The Myth of the River, an old story. In this myth, a golden boat travels down a wide, wide river, but the further it travels, the wider the river becomes and eventually the members of the boat do not know if they are still in the river or at sea. This is a critical metaphor for the attainability of the afterlife - one cannot know when he or she has reached it.

Pazhujebis, on the other hand, are the largely the descendants of North Indian expellees of Rome. They settled the Pazhujeb Islands about two millenia ago. They have light to medium brown skin, dark hair, and brown eyes. All Pazhujebis, men and women, wear purple turbans, though like the face paint of the Stvoto Latolisis, these turbans are forgone during sporting events. There are multiple ethnic groups here. The Mahathan Pazhujebis are by a slight margin the largest group; they consider themselves to be descendants of wealthy entrepreneurs within the Roman Empire and as such feel a general sense of superiority. Following close behind in terms of number are the African Pazhujebis, who are full or partial descendants of Yoruba immigrants who have arrived over the course of the last millennium. Finally, the smaller group of the Zahuji Pazhujebis also consider themselves to be descendants of Indians expelled from the Roman Empire, however, they have rejected Roman social influences due to lingering resentment over the expulsion, and have tried to culturally return to their North Indian roots.

Geneticists have studied the sequences of Mahathans and Zahujis and concluded that there is no fundamental racial difference between the two clades, but that does not stop Pazhujebis from perceiving strong distinctions between the two, and the belief that Mahathans and Zahujis are ethnically separate remains heavily prevalent.

While football is incredibly popular in both Muzira'a Ba'aydah and the Pazhujeb Islands, it is a developing sport in Stvoto Latoli, where their partially-mechanized form of rowing has always been the country's most popular sport. That being the case, Stvoto Latoli is by far the most economically and culturally powerful country in the federation, and so clubs are able to train local players more effectively and purchase Muzira'a Ba'aydi or Pazhujebi players away from their home sources. This serves as an equalizing factor, though the phenomenon is still visible when examining the demography of this current national team; there are nine Muzira'a Ba'aydis and nine Pazhujebis, but there are just five Stvoto Latolisis and two of them are goalkeepers.

Demonyms are slightly complicated. In terms of citizenship, it is acceptable to refer to anyone in Muzira'a Ba'aydah, the Pazhujeb Islands, or the city-state of Stvoto Latoli as "Stvoto Latolisi," but in terms of describing ethnicity, referring to somebody as such implies that they are from the actual raft complex. (In the same way, "Stvoto Latoli" may refer to either the small raft city-state of Tobyumosyu, or it may refer to the broader empire as a whole.) It is not, however, typically considered offensive when foreigners refer to anybody from the Maritime Empire as Stvoto Latolisi, even if they are actually Muzira'a Ba'aydis or Pazhujebis.

The TSLB ("Tazi’shu Stvoto Latolisi Balomobi") is the organizing association for the national football team and the league structure for club teams. There is no such thing as "the Stvoto Latoli FA" - what you mean to say is "the TSLB." Among fans, the most popular nicknames for the national team are "Gu Milusatratu Gerhoomow'thatho" (or "The Golden Crows" in English) and "Gu Milusatratu-Zootyusoyzyu" (or "The Gold-Whites" in English).

Name: Steffan Pekarik

Description: Pekarik once played for the Terns as a left-back. Well, not once, but a hundred and forty one times. He managed to get fifteen assists and six goals and even captained his country once. On club level, he played for East Franz Athletic, Urajbina of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu, and then FC Axel Heiburg, winning the Champions' Cup as captain before retiring and going into a coaching role with the club. Later followed manager Morten Rasmussen to the Terns to become assistant manager through all the Terns' final appearances. And now comes the weird part, he prefers defensively strong formations. Yet he's now managing Farfadillis. After a decade learning from Rasmussen, it was about time Steffan started to do things on his own, though. Steffan is famously hard on his players if they're found to be guilty of complacency or lazy play, and he drills his players hard on the training pitch. Some Farf players have caused him a couple of headaches as a result, Terán being the worst offender, though Mata's not far off. He's not afraid of ruffling feathers with popular/lazy/show pony players. He'll take no prisoners, suffer no fools, and allow no airs or graces. Everyone works hard, everyone gets the rewards. That's the philosophy he'll try to make prevail facing the particularly eccentric national team he's chosen. The fight's been hard so far, and, though he's not achieved the best of results, he sure has been making the team progress, at least defensively. Naturally, he's aiming for more than what he's achieved so far, and in that he can finally agree with his team.

Description: Casper Baek has been one of the most celebrated one-club-players in recent Valhallan history. Turning out his entire career for FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls until he reached forty and finally retired, Baek has eased naturally into a coaching role, and his vast playing experience will be a valuable resource for any team that employs him. He has a keen eye for man-management, so whenever Pekarik gets angry and shouts at people, it will be Baek who picks them up, dusts them down, and tells them they can do it. His biggest downfall is that he's not really tall (just slightly below-average height), but he makes up for it with astonishing, acrobatic saves. He used to be quick-tempered, but at the age of twenty-nine he seems to have finally matured.

Description: Ekvinter was a part of the Di Bradini Cup-winning squad that Risko Kâí captained to glory. He was a substitute to Rôhj Tzâín, sure, but nobody can deny he's got the talent going for him. This man may just end up being second choice to Rôhj Tzâín throughout his entire international career, but he's as safe as second choices come.

Description: Calogero's broken into the squad following Lisdiren's retirement and Rigutti getting benched for his domestic team. His performances for Deportí Agaumi were impressive, even by the standards of a goalkeeper not quite so young. He's not an exceptional young talent everyone's eyes will be on like back when Tzâín was trying to break into the team, and it's probably a good thing. He'll certainly not be having a hard time breaking into the squad without the added pressure.

Gwinevra Barbarians

Description: Mata's been around since the U-15's, having been the star of the U-15 World Cup 1 Farf squad. He's a defender with unexpectedly good dribbling skills and an eye for scoring goals when it comes to venturing into the opponent's box. He's good defensively, more than good in many areas, though from a Farf perspective. He excels, however, at how he can bring his team out of the box whenever they park the bus without intending to (which never happens when playing for Farfadillis, to be fair). He can start a counterattack in a matter of seconds, and will often take needless risks by dribbling an opponent inside the box. However, it's very rare for his teams to concede silly goals because of this. Never has any other player played the very definition of Farf defender so well. Pekarik doesn't like his style, but his talent is undeniable, and Pekarik's no fool. Playing for a top team in the best league of the Multiverse for so many years should say enough about him.

Northbrook Diamonds

Description: A product of Dí Maozöxê's youth academy, it didn't take much for Bârr to be sipped off to Northern Sunrise Islands. After impressing in the Di Bradini Cup, it was not surprising that he went to Polar Islandstates. He's quick-tempered, but a few years surrounded by Polarian influences have made him learn to channel it correctly and make it a virtue. He's tall, rather fast, and very strong, too. His technique is decent, but he's less skilled than most Farf defenders (and, by extension, most Farves). He's a titan in the air, however, and has got the ability to read the game really well when fully focused. Truly a player Niko Marek (his 'teacher' at Northbrook) and Steffan Pekarik can be proud of. He might not be at the top of his game as the weather in the Polar Islandstates was quite unpleasant not long ago.

Jungle Strike

Description: Alaminos has been the best defender the team had for some time, but at the age of thirty-three he's losing some pace and endurance, though he's still ahead of the curve in both regards. He's very good both at defense and at offense. His continuous runs up and down the pitch add much-appreciated offensive pressure, but he does not neglect his defensive tasks in the leas. He always gives his all and a bit more, and that's probably what places him above so many other players who'd like to play in his place. His technique is much more similar to a midfielder's, though he's no Terán. He was one of the most important players of the squad that won the AOCAF Cup, even scoring twice against Vilita in the semifinals, a game many think was the best of his entire career. Alaminos is one of Pekarik's favourites, so you can expect him to feature in the first team for at least one more cycle.

Mâ Âlâmëómë

Description: Röènôùjýâ is one of the hottest Farf prospects at the moment. He broke into the Di Bradini Cup squad at age sixteen, but he was pretty unsuccessful in the three editions he played. Not in terms of performance, though. Otherwise, why would he be here? Drê's a very offensive-minded 'fullback' who oozes talent. The fact that Pekarik calls him up despite his decidedly average defensive attributes is testament to how good Drê will be. Maybe Pekarik's sure he can make a defender out of this 'defender', though. His performances for Mâ Âlâmëómë have been way better than expected, though not as much last season.

Description: Thjorgias is the Farf son of Apoxian Grant Pickton, one of the most successful and influential players in the history of the Farf league, and current manager of La Nueva Avenida. As a result, he didn't have trouble getting the spotlight. Under it, however, he's shown that he's not just a name. He's got his father's versatility, as well as some of his dribbling and passing. However, he truly shines at tough tackling and intercepting passes. It's a mystery what Pekarik might make out of him, though. He's got loads of talent, that's for sure.

Description: Cayfú is a defender with a talent for bombing forward. Like almost every Farf defender in existence. However, he has another talent that is extremely rare in Farf defenders: he knows when it is convenient to bomb forward and when it is not. This alone was more than enough for Pekarik to take a liking to him. Salomón had already sparked Rossizzo's interest before, however, so Pekarik's not seeing something nobody saw before. Originally from Libertarian Ferdullaele's pretty respectable youth system, La Nueva Avenida quickly signed him after he showed what he was capable of for a Di Bradini Cup-winning squad that will be remembered for many years to come. As a bonus for Pekarik, he does know how to defend properly. That's notable. Mata's impeccable form has relegated him to the bench his entire international career, but he could get the starting spot anytime soon.

Description: With Cayfú's unfortunate injury, Apoxian-based Leonhard Mixé got an unexpected call-up for the AOCAF Cup. Though he's pretty much completely unheard of in his nation, Mixé's been playing in the top league of the Multiverse for some time, and though he's certainly not the best defender Farfadillis has to offer, he's high enough up in the pecking order to get a call up every once in a while. He's pretty good at reading the game, and his tackling's something not every Farf can offer. An ordinary defender.

Description: Son of Apoxian parents, born and raised in Farfadillis. At the age of fourteen, he moved to the Polar Islandstates. There, he started a career in football (sort of). For Waldenøya Bears, a mediocre club at best. They're currently fighting relegation in the Divisjon 2. Beyond his awesome surname, little is known about John. However, Pekarik's reasons for calling him up are evident: he's astonishingly rough when playing. He's played two games for the national team, and he was just average in both of them. After a dip in form he stopped getting called up, but now that he's picked himself up he's once again in Pekarik's mind. Rumours have it he'll be getting a transfer to the Divisjon One soon.

Midfielders

Name: Yurpá Mêndêlöíndçêl Nüyntâk

Dwile Warriors

Description: The captain and one of the best players in Farfadillis' history. If there's anyone who knows what playing for Farfadillis is, it's him, as he has played every single game the national team has played. Yurpá's the usual rags-to-riches player (though that applies to every Rulandese player in this squad). This frenzied midfielder's got a timing for challenges that few others can match. His endurance is the same, and is without a shadow of a doubt his most defining attribute. He's always able to sprint once more. When he puts his eyes on the ball, it's all he cares about. He'll tackle with his head if necessary, as he has a thorough disregard for his own safety when there're big things on the line. Though he's responsible for Farfadillis' dirty side of the game, he's never been sent off in his entire international career, mainly because of his talent for tackling. He's not as good with the ball as some other players in the team, but he's by no means bad. He can provide teammates with assists and dribble his way into the box (which is admittedly rare). However, there's one thing at which he excels, which is an added bonus that makes him the incredibly threatening player he is: he's good at shooting from long range. His shots are not necessarily precise, though they tend to be. It's their sheer speed that makes them hard to stop for the goalkeeper. Now, obviously, he'll be missing some attempts, and it may be difficult for him to find the space to shoot, but if he gets, say, three long-range shots in one match, chances are the opponents are in trouble. He can shoot with his left foot, too, but he's not that good with it. Despite being the captain, he's a pretty withdrawn player inside the pitch, and will probably be the last person to be carded because of being disrespectful to the referee. One of the most successful Farf players at club level, as well as the only one to have won the Champions' Cup.

Name: Alex Terán Loya

FC Endeavour

Description: Terán is an incredibly classy yet very passionate player. He sees football as just a game, though he does take it very seriously when truly needed. Always a cheerful, cheeky player, he has a knack for pulling off disrespectful tricks, though he doesn't view them that way. He's very good at chipping the ball; it's his favourite way of finishing. However, he can shoot powerfully and reasonably precisely. His endurance is above-average and so is his speed. His dribbling is probably his most famous asset, but his playmaking is pretty eye-catching as well. He's become a key part of the Farf team this last decade, and all laudits should go to Rossizzo, who discovered him before anyone else did. He's reasonably good defensively. He plays a slightly more attacking role than centre midfielder, but he still helps the defense considerably. However, Pekarik's always wanted him to defend even more. What he's come to find out, however, is that Terán is so absent-minded he won't even realize he's not following his instructions when inside the pitch. Terán has definitely been one of the most frustrating player Steffan has coached, but he's got talent and nobody can deny it. Loved by Endeavour's fans, and it's totally justified, as he's been one of their best players for quite a long time.

Mâ Âlâmëómë

Description: The captain and best product of Farfadillis' to date only Di Bradini Cup-winning squad, Risko Kâí is an incredibly dangerous hybrid of a left midfielder and a left winger. His runs down the flank are very hard to stop. When dribbling, he's got each and every trick possible down his sleeve, and can pull off any of them at any given moment. Easily Farfadillis' most unpredictable player, besides Terán (possibly). He's a player who does not care about aggressiveness against him, and will tend to provoke the opponent if he sees he can get away with it (provoking usually takes the form of trash-talking and going for nutmegs). He can cut in and shoot from afar, but he's not as good at it as he's at going down the flank. He's pretty good at passing, too, but it's not his biggest asset. However, as heavily attacking-minded as he may sound, he's still good defensively. He gives his all for the team, and knows how to strip players from the ball, though he's definitely average at it. He may be very cheeky inside the pitch, but he's not the kind of player who gets a red card for idiotic reasons, and he's not really that temperamental. He's not the kind of player who dives either, which backfires sometimes. Many argue he's becoming the best Farf player in football history. It's tough distinguishing between Dandalleion in his prime and him now. Sadly, time is running out for Pekarik to make the most out of Kâí, who's exiting his prime.

Name: Matías Delafuente Obrero

Viztourzys Kolektyvinis

Description: He's a fantastic playmaker, the best of the team. That's all he'd need to be a starter, but he's definitely not bad at dribbling, shooting from afar and heading. He became the first Farf to win a UICA competition, though he was followed by everyone from Dor Frío a season later, as well as Mêndêlöíndçêl not long after. Oh, and he scored in the Globe Cup final he won! One of La Nueva Avenida's academy's greatest products. Too bad they let him leave so early. He made a name for himself back in the Di Bradini Cup Farves apparently just can't stop talking about. Now a starter, his workrate's been getting admirable, and his passes have only gotten scarier. Delafuente's progress so far seems pretty boundless. He's also a very loyal player, having chosen to stay at Viztourzys depite the team failing to achieve its objectives for some seasons.

Name: Mâás Jân Fôx Düçélájé

Description: Mâás Fôx is not great defensively, but he will cause a headache to most defenders. He's got an impressive long-range precision and an impressive playmaking ability. He can run down the flank if he wishes, but he prefers to cut in. Being ambidextrous opens up many more possibilities for him, and is probably the thing that adds the most to how dangerous he can be. He's the best player in the team when it comes to free kicks. He's also very fast, just as everyone in the team, and is very precise when crossing. And he couldn't care less about pressure. Used to not be in a great physical state, most of the times unable to endure an entire match, but his time at Directus seems to have left that behind. He can be stripped from the ball by virtue of physical strength, though he's good at getting fouled when that happens. Fôx is nowadays absolutely key to the team. At the age of twenty-nine, some hope he has not yet reached his peak.

Name: Ruy Alexander Monrazón Dianaslocas

Avenida Leal

Description: Avenida Leal's youth academy received heavy investment not very long ago, and it's turning out to be a pretty fruitful decision. This player is the best fruit. Ruy is quite short, but that does not stop him from being one of the best young Farf players right now. His sky-high workrate is reminiscent of Mêndêlóíndçêl's when he was his age. His playmaking is very promising, and his dribbling and long-range attempts are nothing to scoff at. When it comes to defending, it's not hard to see why Pekarik would call him up. Ruy has got a natural talent for tackling and intercepting, which Pekarik can only improve. If things turn out the way they should, Farfadillis has finally got itself a worthy replacement for Mêndêlöíndçêl. Arambilet's probably his biggest obstacle right now, but he's eight years younger. His substitute appearences so far have been great. He's unlikely to remain at Avenida Leal for long.

Name: Ostadar Arambilet Olitzar

Avenida Leal

Description: Ostadar is Astograthian. He's played for Astograth. He was Astograth's next big thing. But the nation became authoritarian, and Ostadar did not like that. He also did not likethe fact that the national team disbanded. So, well, as luck would have it, he'd play for his new home, Farfadillis. Son of Gaur Arambilet, Ostadar takes after him in terms of being able to score many goals, but he isn't a striker, he's a midfielder. He plays in the centre and is adept at both attacking and defending, something specially relieving for Pekarik. He's got the talent to read the game, and the talent to create goals out of thin air, a must-have for a Farf midfielder. His long-range shots are very accurrate, and he's got the kind of vigour needed to enter the box looking for a striker's goal and actually getting one. He's likely to cause more than one headache to opposing defenders should he get the nod from the Polarian manager. He's very professional, so he's unlikely to play any worse than he played for Astograth. He looks like the most likely replacement for Mêndêlöíndçêl, but Monrazón's an unexpected new challenger he'll have to watch out for.

Description: Ibarra's an odd case. His debút in football was at the age of twenty-two, just two years ago, for Libertarian Ferdullaele, a relegation-threatened team. This was after being discovered by a one-off nation-wide (extremely expensive) scouting the Liberdullaelans chose to carry out. He almost single-handedly avoided relegation for them. Pacey, crafty and very consistent, Ibarra's very, very unlikely to find a place in the starting line-up right now, but he's young and nobody knows what the future holds for him. His performances last season earned him a move to Avenida Principal, one of the best Farf teams around, and a team which he supports.

Name: Rübéãn Tôr Rämír

FC Endeavour

Description: Tôr is one very talented player. He's got the spirit of a typical Rulandese midfielder; unquenchable and irresponsibly (in terms of health) dedicated to the team. You'll see him running up and down the pitch all the time. He knows how to defend, but he's also a cheeky player. He will dribble and attempt passes others would not, and he will get many of them right (and some wrong, too, let's admit it). He's a bit reckless, however, though it does mean you won't see him diving. Though he's right-footed, he's certainly not bad at all with his left foot, often shooting from afar with it when playing on the right. He can play on both flanks, and cause headaches to anyone who has to take care of him. Dí Maozöxê certainly did not disappoint anyone after producing Mâás Fôx. Rübéãn Tôr is the new talented midfielder from Ruland, and he's already a big deal. Capped at age nineteen? Check. Signed by an important internationally-renowned club? Check. Starter there at a young age? Check. Scarily talented? Check. He's been evolving into a very likely replacement for... uhmm... pretty much any offensive player in the team. He'll be getting as much playing time as Pekarik can afford, as it's evident Farfadillis' future hopes lie in big part on this guy's shoulders. It's a shame he wasn't born slightly later; he could've started aged twenty if Farfadillis hadn't gotten two of its best players in Fôx and Kâí at around the same time.

Name: Fôrté Mâás Wínrôuge Çíânflöné

Mâ Âlâmëómë

Description: Mâ Âlâmëómë's a club that invests a lot on getting the talented players as young as possible and nurturing them the best they can. As a result, it comes as no surprise that they produce talented players very often. However, once in a while, they produce one so talented it's obvious from the very start that he'll wear a laser green cross on a red shirt one day. With his wicked dribbling, astonishing football IQ and ambidexterity, Wínrôuge's one of those players. Pekarik definitely could've called up players who had proved themselves on bigger stages than Fôrté, but he knew this guy was the one who'd be leading the national team for a long time, and the sooner he adapted to it the better.

Name: Ichi Marco Tuzzio Grecco

Description: Originally from Dandillis, a Farf colony, Ichi Tuzzio might be a bit too old to be called up consistently, but he's still one of the best players in Farf history; nobody should underestimate him just because he's been declining in quality (and, mainly, physical aptitude). His incredibly convenient skill set for a centre attacking midfielder made him a big threat some years ago, and he's still very good despite being displaced by upcoming youngsters. First of all, he's a very good playmaker, and has almost telepathic communication with Dandalleion, with whom he played for both club and country for many years (they're also pretty good friends off the pitch). However, his playmaking ability is kind of just a bonus, as what stands out is his agility and reflexes when dribbling, coupled with his technique. Therefore, he's a great dribbler, and can make his way into the box and score quite easily. It is not his dribbling, as good as it may be, that makes him stand above most others, though. It is his clinical shots that do. He can reliably get a shot on target if given half a centimetre. When inside the box and given space, the likelihood of him not scoring is rather slim. He often aims for the lower corners, and gets it right a scary amount of the time. His long-range shots are very threatening, too, adding just another player who's good at long-range efforts to a team that apparently just can't get enough of them. There is two downsides to him, the two closely related. His endurance is below-average and, probably as a consequence, he does not help out defensively. He's also lost his speed. The spark's still there, but it shows up less and less often as time passes.

Name: Itxaso Zuazubiskar Lauvé

Description: The last foreign midfielder, we swear. There's Ostadar (now injured, though), there's Ichi and this is the last guy. Zuazubiskar is mostly Astograthian and, though we all know how that went down, his reasons for playing for Farfadillis have, surprisingly, nothing to do with authoritarianism. Farfadillis was the only team that ever paid attention to him, so he just chose to play for his mother's country. Not very complicated. He's now playing for Avenida Leal, a team that came in begging for his talent after the Astograthian league KABOOM'D. He's above-average in all offensive areas, but the only attribute of his that stands out is his long-range precision (what a surprise!).

Description: Another player getting to the squad thanks to some impressive performances in the Di Bradini Cup Farfadillis won. Unfortunately for Kühâx, though, he's got the toughest competition out of all the players from said squad. On one side, Risko Kâí, who captained him in the Di Bradini Cup he won. On the other, Mâás Fôx, who would've been preferred over him in the Di Bradini Cup had Rossizzo chosen to call up any capped players other than Risko. And to top it off, Rübéãn Tôr has already surpassed him as well. Oh, and arguably Iñaki Ibarra too. However, nobody can deny Kühâx is more than worthy of the spot in the bench. Playing for Mâ Âlâmëómë, he's impressed many. He's got a lot of talent running down the flank, and his crossing is exquisite. However, unlike most Farves, he's not that good cutting in and going for a long-range shot or a pass. He's pretty tall, and as a result can score headers to make up for it. As a bonus, he's better defending than Risko and Mâás, which Pekarik definitely appreciates.

Avenida Leal

Description: Björg's been performing impressively for Avenida Leal the last few seasons. Pacey and talented, he's truly unlucky to have been born around the same time as Risko Kâí and Mâás Fôx. Nonetheless, he's an interesting alternative which Pekarik will no doubt consider. He's likely to get most of his playing time against teams with a low ranking. Still, he's got a lot of chemistry with other players in the squad, mostly as a result of playing alongside them at one point. He's one of four Avenida Leal midfielders getting caps this cycle.

Name: José Torino Fuego Teixidó

FC Axel Heiburg

Description: José Torino Fuego was a starter for the Di Bradini Cup-winning squad and was even the top goalscorer. He started playing at Flamagua and got them promoted to the FFL2. He even got them really far in the Series B Champions' Cup. Oh, and he got them promoted to the FFL after that. What followed that? He moved to Liria Prizren, where many held the belief he would excel in due time. Sadly, Mytannion turned into a failed state and he had to move to Polar Islandstates, where the weather shut everything down for a season, so it's safe he's not the luckiest guy. He's without a doubt a talented striker, heralded as the next Dandalleion, though perhaps he's a tier below, and he's got just the right age for that. His brother, Lorenzo Fuego, was capped for Farfadillis, but Pekarik has decided he is no longer fit for the national team. Oh, his eldest brother, Pablo Fuego, is the captain of Tifón De La Costa, a Farf yo-yo club, too. Inside the pitch, Fuego is notable for his unquenchable will, his dribbling, his ability to never let a hole in the opposing defense escape his attention, his exquisite passing to make use of the previous skill and, finally, his precision with his feet and his head. Certainly complete. He's just the right age, too. He's young and he's earned the starting position despite the competition for the two starting spots being very, very fierce. Dandalleion takes one spot automatically, and then countless Farf strikers try to get the remaining spot. It's a shame we won't enjoy him and Dandalleion playing together in their prime, though, as Friekder's exiting his just as José Torino's entering it.

Jungle Strike

Description: Friekder Dandalleion is easily the most famous Farf player around. He started his career playing for the national swamp football team. Ferdullaele gave him a chance for a trial as a result of his great performances in said national team. He was great. He eventually started playing for Ferdullaele, and then the national team, with a move to Turori following. The rest is history. Dandalleion is the very definition of a versatile player, being able to play as either a right midfielder, a left midfielder, a centre attacking midfielder or any position up front. He can also play as a wingback if really, really needed. Being so versatile not only gives him more chances of starting for his team (though he does not need those extra chances), but it also gives him an ample skillset to pull off just about anything regardless of position. He knows each and every position well, and knows how to mix them, yielding a lethal result. Rossizzo seemed to have found the perfect combination for this, making him play as a striker on the left. Pekarik will do the same. This allows him to cut in and shoot to the lower corners, something he does well thanks to playing as a centre attacking midfielder for Jungle Strike (not the part of cutting in, obviously). This also allows him to venture down the flank thanks to his times as a left midfielder, and it also allows him to act as any other striker thanks to his times as, well, a striker. However, there's one thing that makes Dandalleion outstanding. When you mix his ample skillset position with astonishing speed, even at his age (he even got two gold medals last summer Olympics, and qualified to the two hundred metres final, though his inclusion in the Farf delegation was an unsurprising bureaucratic mistake) and an exquisite control of the sphere, you get a striker that's very easy to assist. Sure, he can create chances for himself, but having Delafuente, Fôx and Terán assisting you makes everything a lot easier. Dandalleion also makes things easier for them. His dribbling and his finishing, which are almost unmatched when it comes to Farves, let him finish everything he starts. He's as complete as forwards come. The trick he likes to pull off the most is, as said, to cut in and shoot to the lower corners. The shots tend to be very fast and precise, which makes it all that harder for the goalkeeper. He's a very acrobatic player too, and he's not bad when heading, though he's the one who takes the corners most of the time, once scoring directly from one against Northern Sunrise Islands. His crossing is very good, but he does not tend to cross (except from corners, as mentioned) anyway. If he goes down the flank, he's very likely to attempt to enter the box and create a much more dangerous chance than just crossing the ball. He's known for turning up in big games, too. He's one of Jungle Strike's most valuable players, and has been one of their best player for almost a decade. Renowned as the best Farf player along with Mêndêlöíndçêl (and nowadays, Kâí), but he's the one who gets the spotlight. He's considerably old now, but he's still as fast, only his endurance has taken a hit. It will be a sad day for Farf football (and maybe Multiversal football) when Dandalleion has to retire, and not many want to think what would be of the national team without him. Pekarik's out of luck, it seems: he'll probably be the one who'll have to take the decision to exclude him from the roster when push comes to shove, and at the age of thirty-six it's probably soon.

Izotz Zubia

Description: Roga is a mystery. He does not excel at anything, but he's above-average in everything a striker needs. He's also an avid writer with a few books under his belt. All of them were pretty grotesque in terms of plot, mind. He was the starter for a good amount of time, but Fuego's gotten considerably better, and Roga's getting old. Now, the competition for being Dandalleion's partner may be very tough, but Roga has coninuously convinced, and Pekarik knows full well he's currently a very good option, though an old one too. He's definitely Farfadillis' best poacher, probably in history, with only Tenian as a contender.

Avenida Principal

Description: Farf strikers are usually pictured as very pacey. Dandalleion, Roga, Tenian, the Fuego brothers, Dragãozý, Cornelio. Tenian was the slowest out of them, and his explosiveness in the box was still his most remarkable strength. How funny then, that one of Farfadillis' most exciting young strikers is slightly lacking in that department. Yes, his running speed is pretty average. However, he more than makes up for that with a first touch that puts even Bârr's rudimentary long passes to sleep, an instinct for positioning and very clinical finishing. He's a very resourceful striker, looking to pull off unorthodox ways to score when they're all that's left, not caring how ridiculous he might end up looking. He often screws up, as expected, but when he nails it, it's memorable.

La Nueva Avenida

Description: The reason why Cornelio had been called up is mainly that he's been consistently impressing playing in the FFL. A move to La Nueva Avenida late in his career seems to have brought more of the spotlight to this player, who excelled last season, tying for most goals. He's a striker with stunning speed and good finishing, but his dribbling is not very good. In all honesty, he shouldn't be getting much - if any - playing time, but who knows what goes through Pekarik's mind? He's had his minutes already, and he actually went to the last World Cup Farfadillis qualified to. He's never let anyone down so far, so he's got that going for him.

Name: Çis Dragãozý Törètá

Mâ Âlâmëómë

Description: Dragãozý is a very complete striker. He's shorter than the others, but he can score headers if given the chance to. He single-handedly saved Sent 01 from relegation not very long ago, and is certainly an important part of Mâ Âlâmëómë's squad. Çis is known for spreading inspiration to the entire team. At the age of thirty-two, he's a great leader despite not getting that many minutes of playing time. He's also very fast and completely tireless. He can dribble really well, too. He has shown time and time again that he can score goals single-handedly, an ability that certainly hasn't escaped Pekarik's eye. He'll get the occasional call-up, even if only to keep the squad tightly-knit.

Farfadillis will play its usual kamikaze football, but now more conservatively due to having been influenced by a Polarian manager for a couple of years already. You can still expect the defenders to try to attack often and the team to try to swarm the opposing box, just not as often as in the past.

Say hello to Farfadillis' still-kind-of-somewhat-remotely-new stadium! Having somewhat relatively recently hosted the Champions' Cup's 50th final and the Baptism of Fire's 54th final, it's a great stadium. It's got many, many, many seats, and it's filled with violent Farves, fanatics without any limits willing to shoot each and every one of your nation's fans! Not really, those are just a minority, albeit an incredibly loud one. No, seriously, watch out.
