Pantera has like, 2 good songs I can name. I hate to use him like this, but I think they wouldn't be so popular if Dimebag didn't get plugged.

No, Judas Priest, of course.

I'm not familiar enough with either of them.

An extreme example would be Bullet for My Valentine, though. Listen to their first EP, then listen to their latest albums. I think Carcass and, to a lesser extent, Napalm Death did the same thing. Grindcore isn't as popular as death metal. At least Napalm Death kept some grindcore in their 90s albums. Carcass totally left for melodic death metal.

Could you maybe tell me why they're "just another X band"?

Cattle Decapitation is just another generic brutal death metal band with animal rights lyrics, Nile is just another brutal death metal band with Egypt lyrics, Lamb of God is just another groove metal/metalcore band etc etc, they offer little to nothing new to the existing genres.

Their best albums were released before Cowboys from Hell anyways.

Sadly, your band isn't mine, but if they stopped playing pure thrash metal and switched to a tough guy version of Motley Crue, they could sell like they're Metallica! Look down, back up, where are you? You're on the high road, taking it higher like a super collider. That album was great. What's in your hand, back at me. I have it, it's a hard drive with all the private information of the users we banned from Napster. Look again, the hard drive is now Babymetal. Anything is possible when your band reeks of pop. Okay so changing to death metal isn't bad.

You could also claim it's the other way around, by the way. Napalm Death and Carcass had more than a little influence on the evolution of death metal.

Especially Napalm Death with the blast beats.

I'll conclude here: Napalm Death did not "sell out" by adopting death metal elements, nor did Carcass for taking on melodeath. I've heard assumptions of both in the past and to me it's stupid. In my opinion "selling out" means appealing to the "mainstream audience", for example Metallica adopting a hard rock sound or In Flames becoming more alternative. The majority of the "mainstream audience" doesn't even know what death metal sounds like.

They used to be. If their discography ended in like 2007, I would agree with you.

But as of their last two albums, I couldn't disagree more. They've evolved into a new sound that is progressive, melodic and atmospheric in a filthy sort of way, while somehow becoming even more brutal at the same time. Travis Ryan's new "clean" vocal style is unlike anything else I've heard. It's fucking inhuman and just....awesome. Listen to the Monolith of Inhumanity if you haven't, because Cattle Decapitation really became their own monster on that one. Name one band that sounds like that. Really, please do, because I've been looking and haven't found anything :p

Yeah, they are very hit-or-miss. The only song I really love by them is Domination. Cemetery Gates and Cowboys From Hell are pretty good too. But all in all I consider them overrated. They're good, but not legendary status.

Metal kind of got a bit generic lately...just judging by what you guys are saying and what I listen to (I do like a few of the bands that you guys listed)...so how would something not be generic then? I wouldn't want to make a fusion genre or something just to be different...
