If you need allies there are plenty to be had. Otherwise just beef your military up . . .

Any ship larger than five kilometers is considered a dreadnought in the Vandulian Navy, and we have very few of those.

You could somehow make it all the way to Rheinlander space, but that's a long long ways to travel. (And I don't think I'd form an alliance unless you made a convincing reason why)

Umm, well.. We control that intersection that connects the inner rim of the galaxy to the southern outer spirals, so we kind of have a stranglehold market on them? That is, unless, someone's willing to FTL through empty space to cross the spirals rather than jumping between stars like the usual way.
