Spiky hair. Shouting annoyances. Extreme determination and FRIENDSHIP! Fighting. Muscles. Explosions. Protagonist is generally a he. Protagonist eats like he's constantly baked, and usually has the mental fluidity of not being sober. Tits, but not ecchi-tits. Some simple moral or quest. And the protagonist has an unfortunate other foil or an ace big-brother type, while he's either lustful or as sexualized as a eunuch...this considering it's also a Rom-Com.

This is a generalization though, and I'm a cynical old guy next to New Haven America, even if I'm only like 4-5 years older. Please put up with me when I'm 64.

Which they do, but I felt like being nice that day and didn't feel like debating the subject with you.

You are in a small minority when it comes to the show... which version did you see: the 1999 show or the 2011 show? (Because HxH 2011 is much better, and faster paced, and didn't turn Killua into an emo)

Chronologically, Attack on Titan, Steins;Gate, and Higurashi. In order of how much I enjoyed them, Steins;Gate, Attack on Titan, Higurashi. I loved how they dealt with darker themes and philosophical questions and were adaptations of other media types. I guess you could say I heard about them and decided to watch them for their violence and grittiness, but that's not what I ended up appreciating the most about each series.

Steins;Gate- I gotta' be honest, I've always had a soft spot for any sort of story involving time-travel and parallel-universe. An adaptation from a VN, the anime did a pretty realistic portrayal of the ethical dilemmas and negative consequences involved in time travel. Also I loved how nerdy the anime was, with casual mentions of internet culture, relativity theory, and the idea of pretending to be a mad scientist while in college. My main issue was with some harem undertones in the second half, which probably came from several different endings in the original VN that revolved around different female characters, but the soundtrack generally made up for that.

Attack on Titan- Set in a post-apocalyptic alternate-history Europe where humanity has been all but wiped out by self-regenerating giants that instinctively eat humans, except for within three concentric walls. This was the first anime I'd ever really gotten into, and I remember I spent much of last year watching the first season with a couple friends in my dorm with the lights turned off. The protagonist reminded me of Ash Ketchum and Naruto from my childhood. I really liked how even though there was a clear divide between good and evil, the characters had complex motivations for what they did and all of them had to struggle with their morality as time went on. I thought the pacing allowed me to better connect with the characters even if not much was happening plot wise. As epic as the premise and the soundtrack were, I didn't like the anime as much as the manga, and having already caught up on the manga I'm not sure if I'd want to watch the second season when it comes out.

Higurashi- While it's technically a murder mystery "visual novel" and known for its juxtaposition of Japanese schoolgirl moe with brutal animated violence, I thought Higurashi was fundamentally about broken families, considering how many of the characters had family issues and how important this was through the plots. The trippy thing about Higurashi was how it takes place in a cycle of repeating parallel universes, so every few episodes the story would "start over", and due to different things happening each time you could gradually figure out what was really going on. Some of the characters' mannerisms were pretty endearing, but the typical anime-type cheesy humor and high-pitched voices eventually got on my nerves.

It's quite sane if you listen to late night radio and know a thing or two about the claims...or in other words, you need to pander in borderline postmodernism or be into conspiracy theories and UFOlogy, and some of the nuttier New Age aspects of it if you count the dolphin thing. Albeit "collective unconscious" was a Jungian thing a bit older...this considering it's not MJ-12 style disinformation.
