Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 17 November 4011

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Wednesday, 9 November 4011
Lobyuseistvooshu 1–1 Hozastvu
Sunbirds 1–2 Brewers
Vezhidrupa 2–1 Shadows
Stvozhaboythumow 2–0 Goytowlishemei
Gerthamasa Boyseh 3–2 Pkethat Hevnaje
Cóiméid 0–0 STS

Brewers beat Sunbirds in Fahan despite a 5th minute opener from Nataliaja Irmedheghi, but it didn't do them any good save for consolidating a second place finish in Pool 1 that many other teams would envy. The result was problematic, however, for Lobyuseistvooshu, who were held to a draw by Hozastvu. Now the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse are almost definitely going to finish third rather than second. In the last (and meaningless) Pool 1 match we saw home side Stvozhaboythumow brush aside Goytowlishemei. Meanwhile in Pool 2, Gerthamasa Boyseh struck a thunderous blow to the title hopes of Pkethat Hevnaje in Stvoto Latoli, and since Vezhidrupa beat Shadows in Mahathu (a match in which the All-Whites were very, very poor and were lucky to have escaped with any points at all, let alone three), the Red-Whites are staring down the barrel at a scenario they dreaded. They have to get as many points or more from their final-day fixture than Vezhidrupa do in order to finish top. It sounds easy enough, until you hear that Vezhidrupa face STS, whereas Pkethat Hevnaje will go up against a much tougher Cóiméid. The only silver lining is that Cóiméid are slumping through the last few games of the first phase (they failed to break down relegation-threatened STS in a bore draw in Teach Iarann).

Sunday, 13 November 4011
Goytowlishemei 0–2 Lobyuseistvooshu
Brewers 3–1 Stvozhaboythumow
Hozastvu 2–2 Sunbirds
STS 1–2 Vezhidrupa
Pkethat Hevnaje 2–2 Cóiméid
Shadows 0–0 Gerthamasa Boyseh

The final day of Gu Zhahogowdoo's first phase didn't feature a whole lot of great football, but there was certainly drama, particularly in Pool 2. Pkethat Hevnaje provided the first goal by any of the six teams: ugly goal-mouth scrambles aren't really how the purists like to see goals get scored, but nobody in Pkethat Hevnaje cared one bit. The joy was short-lived, however, as news came quickly from Báisteach Foréigneacha that Vezhidrupa had acquired a one nil lead as well. Things stayed deadlocked that way through half time, with the teams set to finish even on points in the table (PH just nicking it on a tiebreaker). But when play restarted, everything blew wide open. Pkethat Hevnaje made it two nil on 49 minutes and STS equalized on 53. All this good news sent Red-Whites supporters into delirium - the top spot in Pool 2 (and possibly the title) seemed won! But then Cóiméid snatched one back in the 73rd. Pkethat Hevnaje were still on top, but it was more tenuous. Things went from bad to worse in the 83rd, when word came that Vezhidrupa had gone back in front. Both matches were two-one, Pkethat Hevnaje and Vezhidrupa winning. The Red-Whites would finish top... unless Cóiméid equalized. And equalize the Comets did, in stoppage time. The entire Hevnaje Peninsula went silent, and those who were able to open their mouths only had curses for Cóiméid. A new rivalry has perhaps been born. Meanwhile in the much less dramatic but still fun final day of Pool 1 play, Brewers destroyed Stvozha in Caisleán Luaith (Air Force's late consolation goal from Baja'khirušu Mha belies the volume of the thumping they received) to clinch second place in the pool. The Chartreuse-Oranges might feel bitter that their good form came too late in the year, but the glass-half full camp will mention that they still need to win the Schveningen in order to get that Globe Cup place, and now all of the other sides in Pool 1 will be glad of it. So there you go, either Sunbirds or Vezhidrupa will be champions! Now we go to the Schveningen phase! For those who need a refresher course, here's how it works: the two pools have been in standard league play with each other for the season up til now. The positions that clubs have earned within their pool are set in stone. However, the final phase pits the two pools against one another in a winner take all situation. That is to say that Gerthamasa Boyseh's great Cinderella season will be for nothing if Pool 2 falls to Pool 1, likewise, Sunbirds' highest-quality offense will not only not be champions but will miss UICA competitions entirely if Pool 2 wins. (Similarly, Shadows' horror show of a season may not end in relegation after all if they get some help from the other Pool 2 clubs and the group wins the Schveningen.) The competition is simple enough. Each team in each pool will play every one of the six teams in the other pool for six total matches a side. All points are (drumroll) pooled together, and whichever pool finishes in front will take all the spoils. Ever seen a high school tennis tournament? That's how this works. Once enemies, the members of each pool now come together as a meta-team to accomplish the ultimate goal. The stakes could not be higher.

Gu Zhahogowdoo Schveningen Phase

Tuesday, 15 November 4011
Goytowlishemei (P1) 0–3 Cóiméid (P2)

Wednesday, 16 November 4011
Shadows (P2) 1–1 Lobyuseistvooshu (P1)
Gerthamasa Boyseh (P2) 1–1 Brewers (P1)
Hozastvu (P1) 3–0 STS (P2)
Stvozhaboythumow (P1) 0–1 Pkethat Hevnaje (P2)
Vezhidrupa (P2) 1–1 Sunbirds (P1)

No major upsets on day one of the Schveningen, as teams continued their cautious play from the end of the last phase. (Remember, none of these teams have played each other yet this year, save for a few fixtures that played out in the cup.) Pool 2 ends Matchday 1 with a slender one-win margin. There were three draws (one of which was an incredible performance from Cinderella side Gerthamasa Boyseh, who held onto the result despite tremendous pressure from Brewers' attack) and three wins, with Pool 2 obviously winning two of those and Pool 1 winning just the one. Pkethat Hevnaje's slim win over Stvozhaboythumow on the Air Force base notwithstanding, those victories were blowouts.

But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. As I leapt atop my broom, I could already hear the wailing of the merpeople from the depths; their last shred of dignity, the last remnant of their kingdom, their last symbol of hope; raped by the tyrannical humans.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 28 November 4011

Gu Zhahogowdoo Schveningen Phase

Saturday, 19 November 4011
Pkethat Hevnaje (P2) 1–1 Hozastvu (P1)

Sunday, 20 November 4011
Cóiméid (P2) 1–0 Lobyuseistvooshu (P1)
Brewers (P1) 5–0 Shadows (P2)
STS (P2) 0–3 Goytowlishemei (P1)
Stvozhaboythumow (P1) 2–1 Vezhidrupa (P2)
Sunbirds (P1) 1–1 Gerthamasa Boyseh (P2)

It was a much better day for Pool 1 sides than the midweek; they won three games, drew two, and only lost one. That allows the pool to erase Pool 2's lead from Matchday 1 and then some. Stvozhaboythumow's huge upset victory at home against Vezhidrupa was notable, as was Brewers' predictable but nonetheless valuable battering of Shadows. Cóiméid racked up their second win in as many matchdays, though, which is welcome news for all the other Pool 2 teams. The Comets can't carry the load on their own, though - Vezhidrupa and Pkethat Hevnaje need to stop dropping points, pronto, and STS need to stop being a drain on everybody else... the Yellow-Blues look terrible.

Saturday, 26 November 4011
Lobyuseistvooshu (P1) 1–0 Pkethat Hevnaje (P2)

Sunday, 27 November 4011
Brewers (P1) 3–1 Cóiméid (P2)
Shadows (P2) 0–5 Hozastvu (P1)
Vezhidrupa (P2) 3–2 Goytowlishemei (P1)
Gerthamasa Boyseh (P2) 1–3 Stvozhaboythumow (P1)
Sunbirds (P1) 1–0 STS (P2)

Ouch. Matchday 3 may very well have just sealed this Schveningen competition, the first pool winning five of the six matches - nearly a clean sweep. With each of the potential Pool 1 international entrants (Sunbirds, Brewers, Lobyuseistvooshu, and Stvozhaboythumow) victorious, and with Hozastvu's emphatic beat-down on Shadows, it looks very, very bad indeed for Pool 2. Vezhidrupa's timid-looking defeat of Goytowlishemei in Mahathu (a game that should have been a thunderous win) could very well be a metaphor for the efforts of Pool 2 over the course of the 4011 season: loads of potential but poor execution. Maybe the fact that Pool 2 wasn't decided until the final day of the first phase had an effect: while Pool 1 teams knew where they'd finish after about Matchday 22, Pool 2's outfits were wearing themselves out on each other right up until the death. Technically, this isn't over yet. But with Pool 1 five wins to the good, Pool 2 is really up against it as we reach the Schveningen halfway point.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 7 December 4011

Gu Zhahogowdoo Schveningen Phase

Wednesday, 30 November 4011
Lobyuseistvooshu (P1) 0–1 STS (P2)
Vezhidrupa (P2) 1–2 Brewers (P1)
Hozastvu (P1) 4–0 Gerthamasa Boyseh (P2)
Goytowlishemei (P1) 3–0 Shadows (P2)
Cóiméid (P2) 2–2 Stvozhaboythumow (P1)
Pkethat Hevnaje (P2) 2–1 Sunbirds (P1)

Well, another bad day at the office for fans of Pool 2 sides. Cóiméid barely saved a point against Air Force (they were two nil down with ten minutes to go), and Goytowlishemei, Hozastvu, and Brewers all won with relative ease, and although Sunbirds, who look very much like champions-to-be, may have lost to Pkethat Hevnaje, the other clubs in their group did right by them. The lead is six wins for Pool 1, and with a good Matchday 5 they can end it. Win more games than Pool 2: that's all they have to do.

Sunday, 4 December 4011
Gerthamasa Boyseh (P2) 1–1 Lobyuseistvooshu (P1)
STS (P2) 1–5 Brewers (P1)
Hozastvu (P1) 1–1 Vezhidrupa (P2)
Pkethat Hevnaje (P2) 4–1 Goytowlishemei (P1)
Stvozhaboythumow (P1) 4–0 Shadows (P2)
Sunbirds (P1) 2–0 Cóiméid (P2)

That does it, folks! And what a way for Sunbirds to crown themselves champions - they only had the displeasure of playing their archrivals Cóiméid once this year and yet when the occasion did finally roll around they could seal their championship with a win and some help. They got both, opening up a lead in the thirteenth minute and then doing something that they haven't been much known for this year: defending! The Reds' back four were clutch over the course of the ninety minutes, keeping it one nil despite having a man sent off in the 71st minute. And then, at the end, how sweet it was for the home fans in Fahan that they were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Both the match's and the season's final touch of the ball in anger was a goal from twelve yards by Gu Zhahogowdoo Golden Boot winner Nataliaja Irmedheghi. It finished two nil, and because the home supporters knew of the league's other results (Pkethat Hevnaje were hammering Goytowlishemei and Gerthamasa Boyseh, Lobyuseistvooshu, Hozastvu, and Vezhidrupa were playing to draws, but Brewers and Stvozha were clobbering STS and Shadows respectively), they knew they were champions. And, of course, there was a fair bit of joy for others as well: though Brewers' ambitions were a fair bit high at the beginning of the year, at the end their form was sublime and they'll go home with a deserved second place. Then there's Lobyuseistvooshu, who'll get third - they weren't expected to do much this year but in the end were quite impressive indeed. (Granted, they went through periods of inconsistency, but they should still be proud of this accomplishment.) And for Stvozhaboythumow, who finished fourth, they may have been aiming a bit higher than where they ended up, but by golly you'd better believe that Brown-Blacks supporters will be laughing their heads off that they got into the Globe Cup and their rivals Hozastvu didn't. Hozastvu, for their part, deservedly avoided relegation (so did Goytow, though not so deservedly). But over in Pool 2, there'll be only bitterness. Pkethat Hevnaje's incredible bounce-back year after the death of their coach was for nothing... they will finish a disappointing eighth. Cóiméid had a good year as well, but a ninth-place finish and a disastrous loss to their archrivals, sealing the 'Birds title, will leave a bad taste in their mouths for many years to come. Finally, it's curtains for STS and Shadows, unquestionably Gu Zhahogowdoo's two worst sides - they will spend next season in TSLB League 1. (An anecdote for the more pedantic among you - league rules stipulate that the Schveningen is to end the moment the competition is clinched by one pool or another. If there are remaining fixtures in the year, as the case is this season, they are cancelled - there's no point in playing the games since none of the twelve teams have anything whatsoever at stake.)

Plenty of drama in Stvoto Latoli's second-tier league as well - aside from the top and the bottom, I suppose. (And really, isn't that always how it works? The teams in the middle always seem to have the most to fight for on the last day of the year.) Šešri’makaru had the competition won at the end of Matchday 33 - they could be caught on points (as they eventually were) by Bei'thatho but knew they held the tiebreaker on the Pirates via their impregnably better wins total (20 to 17). The Violet-Whites rested all their good players for the last two games of the year, losing both, but what do they care? They're going right back up after only a year away from the top flight. As for the other three promotion spots, they're still up for grabs, as the next best eight clubs in the division now head to the promotion playoffs (which devoted readers will remember uses a McIntyre-style playoff format so as to benefit teams that finished higher in their respective tables). Are there favorites? Aforementioned Bei'thatho have the top spot and are in superb form; on paper they should go through to Gu Zhahogowdoo with ease, but games are not won on paper. Confident Vortex are also strong contenders, as are attack-minded Igizimoomyu and Juqha Zhaba and Raktaghav Hathi, Group PI runners-up and third-place-finishers respectively. There will be three more teams promoted, though... we know that much... Gu Zhahogowdoo is set to expand to fourteen teams next season, so four will go up but just two will come down.

Given the awkward circumstances of relegation between Gu Zhahogowdoo and TSLB League 1 (there is no guarantee that an equal number of teams from any given country will go up or go down), we don't know for sure yet who will be going up and who won't up there, so we don't know which teams from which countries will be going up from League 2 to League 1, but according to our crack team of expert mathematicians, Bijji (at the very least) will be in the second tier next year. They fought tooth and nail to get where they are given that Ithuši and Therakham were riding their butts all the way along and major stumbling blocks existed in that Group PI, chiefly Urajbina.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 17 December 4011

Promotion Playoffs Qualifying Round

Sunday, 11 December 4011
Juqha Zhaba 1–2 Buqul Ashabab
Igizimoomyu 2–0 Owgatreh’hyuda

Monday, 12 December 4011
Vortex 2–2 Raktaghav Hathi (3–2 AET)
Bei’thatho 1–1 Iron House (2–1 AET)

Bei'thatho will certainly feel lucky given that their extra-time winner was miles offside, as will Vortex given that the penalty that put them over the top in the 116th minute against Hathi was, well, a dive. Then of course there was Igizimoomyu's win over Owgatreh’hyuda in an all-Stvoto-Latolisi affair, but that wasn't much fun as the referee set a dangerous precedent from the opening whistle by letting the play become much too physical - by the end of ninety minutes players were throwing punches. What's that tell you about the standard of refereeing in the second flight, eh? For what it's worth, three of these teams are going up, and they won't have to deal with this frickin issue next year.

Promotion Playoffs Semifinals Fixtures
1st Semifinal - (5) Buqul Ashabab v (6) Owgatreh'hyuda
2nd Semifinal - (3) Igizimoomyu v (4) Juqha Zhaba

Promotion Playoffs Semifinal Round

Thursday, 15 December 4011
Buqul Ashabab 0–0 Owgatreh’hyuda (0–0 AET) (4–3 pen.)
Igizimoomyu 1–2 Juqha Zhaba

Juqha Zhaba saved their hides with a win over Igizimoomyu - having lost their Qualifying Round match against Buqul Ashabab in shameful fashion they had to win or they were out (it was only their fourth seed that saved them from being dumped out; the highest-seeded first round losers stay alive). But the lime-and-pale-blue-wearing side kept their heads and came back from a goal down against a clearly better Igizimoomyu. Oh hey, speaking of Buqul Ashabab, they won again! This time it was easier opposition (reward for having won in the opening round), and yet they found a way to make the game look harder, needing extra time and penalties to get through. So we have our final four (Bei'thatho, Vortex, Juqha Zhaba, and Buqul Ashabab)! Three of those four will be going through (winners in the Preliminary Round will be the first two, winners of the 3rd Place Playoff will be the third), not only to the top flight, but to the SBCC! Plenty to play for, that's for sure.

Promotion Playoffs Preliminary Finals Fixtures
1st Preliminary Final - (1) Bei'thatho v (5) Buqul Ashabab
2nd Preliminary Final - (2) Vortex v (4) Juqha Zhaba

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 27 December 4011

Promotion Playoffs Preliminary Final Round

Sunday, 18 December 4011
Bei’thatho 1–1 Buqul Ashabab (1–1 AET) (5–4 pen.)
Vortex 3–2 Juqha Zhaba

A thrilling penalty shoot-out was all that could separate Buqul Ashabab from their hosts on the evening, Bei'thatho. Stvoto Latoli's richest League 1 club were huge favorites, so to see little Buqul Ashabab (a club from without question the remotest part of the Maritime Empire, the Southern Territory) take the game to the very-much-in-form Pirates was a delight. And they were, at one point, down two nil in the penalty shootout before recovering to force more than the standard five frames. But in the end, their teenage left back (who didn't look like he fancied taking a penalty) sent his shot skyward and Buqul Ashabab, who were in League 2 last season and thought perhaps they were in with a chance of a double promotion, were defeated. They can still play their way into Gu Zhahogowdoo in the Third Place Playoff, though. Their opponents in that match will be Juqha Zhaba, who may have thought they had a shot at forcing extra time when they equalized in the 74th minute, but they couldn't hold on to that result. Vortex fulfilled their dream of promotion to the top flight, where they will be able to contest unquestionably the most heated local rivalry in Muzira'a Ba'aydah, the Caisleán Luaith Derby. At any rate, Juqha Zhaba and Buqul Ashabab have already met (in the Qualifying Round) in these playoffs, and Juqha Zhaba were favorites Buqul Ashabab won. So know knows what will happen?

Promotion Playoffs Third Place Playoff
(4) Juqha Zhaba v (5) Buqul Ashabab

Promotion Playoffs Grand Final
(1) Bei'thatho v (2) Vortex

Promotion Playoffs Grand Final Round

Saturday, 24 December 4011 (3PPO)
Juqha Zhaba 3–1 Buqul Ashabab

Sunday, 25 December 4011 (FINAL)
Bei’thatho 1–1 Vortex (1–1 AET) (1–3 pen.)

Juqha Zhaba overturned the result that Buqul Ashabab had dealt them in the opening round of the playoffs, winning three one (it should have been three nil, as replays showed a Buqul Ashabab player had handled the ball in the lead up to scoring on the Sky-Limes) and securing the very last place in next year's Gu Zhahogowdoo. It's an incredible result from a wonderful little club in a small town on the football-mad Fajr Peninsula of the Pazhujeb Islands; an outfit owned entirely by its supporters. They didn't necessarily have the best of seasons, drifting around the middle of Group PI after three quarters of the year had gone past, but they went unbeaten in their last eight matches and sneaked into the playoffs. Well done, lads. Oh yes, and then there was that almost-meaningless Grand Final. Honestly? It was horrible. Vortex opened the scoring in the 21st minute... in the wrong way. An own goal from the White-Reds put the Pirates ahead, and then the equalizer came four minutes later, the result of an ugly goal-mouth scramble. (It took an hour of studying the replay post facto to figure out which player had actually tapped it in, such was the spaghetti-like mess that resulted in the match's second goal.) And then? Over and hour and a half of boring, Catenaccio-style cynicism leading up to the penalty shootout. Really, neither team can be blamed, as they were both already through and Šešri’makaru had already been crowned League 1 champions. Essentially, the only thing they were playing for was a higher placing in the SBCC, an award that ultimately Vortex obtained. Bei'thatho, who had played three matches in the playoffs, all 120 minutes long, were clearly exhausted.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 6 January 4012

Gu Zizhedoshoy Semifinals

Wednesday, 28 December 4011
Sunbirds 1–1 Vezhidrupa (2–1 AET)
Pkethat Hevnaje 1–5 Hozastvu

The draw tossed probably the best two sides left in this competition into each other in the semifinal, but it was a great match nonetheless. Vezhidrupa left it until the 84th minute to take the lead via a Lonán Madani screamer. It seemed to be the perfect ending to what had previously been a pretty watchable nil nil draw, but there was more excitement to come. 29-year-old right back Khebi'ghašmeda Šedhigveda's courageous run down the flank began the play that leveled the score. A clever bit of one touch passing with Irmedeghi and Bahamdan saw the ball played right back to Šedhigveda's feet, but this time in acres of space with nothing but (literally) green pastures between himself and the goalkeeper. Lyu, being unquestionably the league's best goalkeeper, looked to have found out the onrushing Šedhigveda by storming out of his area to close down the right back's shooting angle. But the Sunbird in the number two shirt showed the technique of a striker by softly chipping the ball up and over the owner of the Stvoto Latoli national team's number one shirt. It was the ninety-first minute and Sunbirds had equalized. Fahan's Reds then comprehensively defeated Vezhidrupa in the extra period and went on to the final. The double is still on. Meanwhile, in a fairly dull contest in Pkethat Hevnaje, Navy annihilated the Red-Whites to give themselves the shot at international competition that they just missed out on in the league. It's Sunbirds v Hozastvu in the cup final, folks! During Gu Zhahogowdoo's first phase, Sunbirds beat Hozastvu three times and drew twice. So it's been... a while since Navy beat Sunbirds. Can they do it this time? It's the Reds versus the Reds in the last game of the year! Who will take the trophy home?

Gu Zizhedoshoy Final

Sunday, 1 January 4012
Sunbirds 3–1 Hozastvu

Hmm. I'd have to do a bunch of research that would be a lot of work to figure this out, but isn't that like the trillionth time this year that Sunbirds have beaten somebody by a three-one scoreline? Oh well, whatever. The point is that Sunbirds have had a year sent from heaven. We all expected the Fahan side to improve on the previous season's 10th place finish. But a league-cup double? That was something only delusional fanboys could ever have imagined. No doubt that 60-year-old manager Mezhergoy Serthidi deserves a large slice of the "credit pie" - his reformation of the club's style into that of a swashbuckling, game-controlling, attacking champion was loved by fans, statisticians, and media alike. It'll be interesting to see what happens in 4012: Vezhidrupa and Brewers will be licking their wounds but rebuilding, eyes set on returning to the top. But from what we've seen from the Reds this year, it appears that the All Whites and the Chartreuse-Oranges have a long, long way to go before they become anywhere near as good as Fahan's 'Birds.
But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. Shesimei Super Cup

Sunday, 18 March 4012
Sunbirds 1–2 Brewers

With Sunbirds winning the 4011 double, it would be a bit hard for the Reds to play themselves in the Super Cup, wouldn't it? Luckily, the rules provide for this situation; 4007 champions Brewers enter as last year's Gu Zhahogowdoo runners-up. Thus, Nataliaja Irmedheghi's first match as a Brewer took place in a pretty familiar venue in Fahan. It was a bittersweet moment both for her and for 'Birds fans as well (perhaps more so for the fans, given the result of the match), to be sure. Brewers kicked things off the way they wanted to in the 6th minute, Heji'šagheru Eji blasting in a half volley from 14 yards out. The Chartreuse-Oranges doubled their advantage in the minute 62 thanks to Jabbar al Amri, Brewers' purchase from Cóiméid. The Reds earned themselves a consolation goal in the 86th, but it wasn't enough. Irmedheghi, widely seen as the league's best player, may not have played the best match of her career in this contest, but it was another trophy for her and her new squadmates in the end.
But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. Gu Zhahogowdoo

Tuesday, 20 March 4012
Gerthamasa Boyseh 1–4 Cóiméid

Wednesday, 21 March 4012
Pkethat Hevnaje 5–0 Šešri’makaru
Goytowlishemei 1–0 Stvozhaboythumow
Juqha Zhaba 3–1 Sunbirds
Brewers 4–2 Vezhidrupa
Lobyuseistvooshu 1–1 Vortex

Hey, remember last year when we had a pretty even first phase draw? When we had some good sides in Pool 1 (Sunbirds, Brewers, Lobyuseistvooshu) and some good sides in Pool 2 (Vezhidrupa, Cóiméid, Pkethat Hevnaje)? Well, uh... this year it's a little more lopsided. Pool 1 has, well... one good team (the champion Reds), and Pool 2 has... uh... all the other good teams (Brewers, Vezhidrupa, Cóiméid, and Lobyu). So essentially the outcome of the Schveningen is already known. This, by the way, is why Gu Zhahogowdoo is discarding its current format next season - by the luck of the draw and no fault of their own, Sunbirds are guaranteed to miss out on next year's international competition (even though they are in the qualifying process for this season's UICA Champions' Cup). I mean, we all knew they wouldn't be anywhere near as competitive without Nataliaja Irmedheghi in there anyway, but... jeez. Anyway, let's look at the midweek results for Matchday 1! Cóiméid's new boss Tugeistvostvoy Tyuhowtroy has made lots of promises about a more attacking strike force for the last few weeks, and he evidently is a man who keeps his promises as the Comets absolutely crushed Gerthamasa Boyseh in the nationally televised first match of the year, Pkethat Hevnaje predictably laid a beat-down on Šešri’makaru (a club with which the Red-Whites had previously had quite good relations), slightly improved Goytow took all three points off Stvozhaboythumow in a tight affair in Tobyumosyu, newly promoted Juqha Zhaba humiliated Sunbirds by coming back from a goal down to win three one in Fajr, and Brewers glittery start to 4012 continued as they beat the All-Whites in Caisleán Luaith (a match that impressed neutrals aesthetically, as there were six goals, one of which was a curled free kick, one of which was a powerful header from distance, and one of which was a superlative finish on a breakaway). The biggest drama of the day, however, was to be found at Setoydyuma'shu Lobyuseistvooshu. Eighty six thousand watched Vortex defend a one nil lead (acquired just seconds after the half time kickoff) with the resolve of a cornered animal, but the home fans weren't to be disappointed, as wingback Leagh Gilmore's industrious work down the right side was rewarded with a Whirls defense lapse in the 85th minute. Gilmore fought his way inside during his march up the pitch, slashed across the front of goal once he was inside the box, and deftly chipped the ball over the goalkeepers outstretched arms. It finished one all.

The whole nation tuned in for the season's first nationally televised weekend league match, but really the match was a fair bit of a disappointment. Two early goals from the Navy Club resulted in Pkethat Hevnaje lethargically attempting to break the home side down. They never managed, and the Maroon-Reds won their first game of the season. The other military outfit won as well, the next afternoon, as Stvozhaboythumow swatted away Juqha Zhaba. Air Force suffered an early scare when the Mariners' Khalil Kerrigan had a 20th minute goal disallowed by a correct offside call, but in truth Stvozha were so good over the rest of the match that even if Kerrigan's goal had counted, Juqha Zhaba still would have lost. Meanwhile, Goytowlishemei took a point from Šešri’makaru on Fajr Island, Vezhidrupa and Brewers predictably beat Gerthamasa Boyseh and Bei'thatho respectively, and Lobyuseistvooshu made Cóiméid's week even crappier by dealing the Comets their second loss of the week (the first being a penalty shootout heartbreaker wherein Igizimoomyu knocked Cóiméid out of the cup). The Comets' general tendency to underperform in Teach Iarann must be considered a grave concern at this point for fans of the black-and-red-clad outfit.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 13 April 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Saturday, 7 April 4012
Lobyuseistvooshu 2–1 Vezhidrupa

Sunday, 8 April 4012
Goytowlishemei 3–1 Hozastvu
Juqha Zhaba 3–0 Šešri’makaru
Sunbirds 1–1 Stvozhaboythumow
Gerthamasa Boyseh 4–1 Bei’thatho
Vortex 2–2 Cóiméid

Our Saturday night opener for this weekend was a true headliner, as two of the Big Three faced off in Tobyumosyu. Lobyuseistvooshu were slight favorites, given their home field advantage and Vezhidrupa's shaky form, and the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse didn't disappoint. They had themselves up two nil by half time, and the All-Whites didn't look any better in the second half (despite finding a consolation goal). The next day, Gowtow continued their promising start by netting two late goals to defeat mediocre Hozastvu, Juqha Zhaba clobbered Šešri’makaru in a local derby (the Mariners continuing their strong start, though they are in a mediocre group), Gerthamasa Boyseh laid waste to their traditional rivals Bei'thatho, and Vortex collected their second draw in as many top flight games by hanging onto the result after Cóiméid stormed back to recover from two goals down. Finally, Sunbirds disastrous start to the year continues. (Man, some honeymoon phase, eh? You almost feel bad for them.) The Reds found themselves looking at a self-inflicted one nil loss after conceding an own goal on 4 minutes, and only obtained the final one-all result after Tastvu Zhooheizhyu managed to opportunistically toe poke a loose ball in the box into the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble. It was the 19th minute, and the next seventy five were tense as Stvozha bombarded the 'Birds vulnerable back line. The fans in Fahan didn't cheer much when the whistle finally blew.

Stvoto Latolisi Football Leagues - 19 April 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Saturday, 14 April 4012
Hozastvu 2–0 Juqha Zhaba
Pkethat Hevnaje 3–0 Goytowlishemei
Brewers 4–3 Gerthamasa Boyseh

Sunday, 15 April 4012
Šešri’makaru 1–4 Sunbirds
Vezhidrupa 3–2 Vortex
Bei’thatho 0–2 Lobyuseistvooshu

Not much worth reporting on Matchday 4 of the Gu Zhahogowdoo season. We saw six matches in which one team was a firm favorite for victory, and in every one the tipped side won. On Saturday night, Brewers lit up Gerthamasa Boyseh in a seven-goal thriller, Navy Club boringly beat the Mariners, and PH obliterated Goytow on Fajr Island. The next afternoon, Sunbirds crushed Šešri’makaru on the road (benefiting from the Purple-Whites' goalkeeper leaving the contest with an injury), Vezhidrupa limped their way to an unimpressive win against Vortex, and Lobyu stayed undefeated by going across town and dealing hapless Pirates their third loss in three matches. Though the results were unsurprising, there were still some great goals, the greatest of which being Doran Palmer's swerving thunderbolt from 26 yards and a difficult angle. The goal was the second for the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse, and was memorable if only for the fact that Palmer was completely off-balance as he struck it.

Tuesday, 17 April 4012
Juqha Zhaba 0–2 Pkethat Hevnaje

Wednesday, 18 April 4012
Sunbirds 3–0 Hozastvu
Stvozhaboythumow 3–0 Šešri’makaru
Lobyuseistvooshu 0–1 Brewers
Vortex 3–0 Bei’thatho
Cóiméid 1–1 Vezhidrupa

One thing is apparent as we pass the fifth matchday of the 4012 season - Šešri’makaru are in deep shit. Having already shipped sixteen goals (over three a game) in by far the worse of the two pools, it is looking like the Purple-Whites are headed straight back down (again) after having a great year in 4011 to get promoted. Their misery was only compounded by a defeat at the hands of a fully-rested Stvozha, who put themselves three up after the 8th minute in a blitz of action right after opening kickoff. (It didn't help that national team goalkeeper Pachomiušam Ouachaburughu couldn't play; he was still carrying a knock picked up in the weekend's match.) As for the rest of Pool 1, Sunbirds obtained a critical win in Fahan to leapfrog Hozastvu and escape what is almost guaranteed to be the drop zone, and because of Juqha Zhaba's home loss to Pkethat Hevnaje the night before, rose to fourth place in Pool 1. Meanwhile, Pool 2 saw Vortex dismiss Bei'thatho (a club that would look to be in every bit as much trouble as Šešri’makaru if they weren't in the better pool) in Caisleán Luaith and Cóiméid drop two points to Vezhidrupa. At the very top of the pool (which as noted is expected to win the Schveningen), Brewers and Lobyuseistvooshu faced off in Tobyumosyu. Brewers controlled the game from start to finish (which should give the previously ecstatic Lobyu fans some pause), although it did take until the 63rd minute to score the match's only goal.

Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is... oh, whatever. Rivalry week is here! What with the Military and Caisleán Luaith Derbies up in Gu Zhahogowdoo and the Mahathu Derby down in League 1, there was utterly no love lost among the sides in action in this midweek Matchday 6. The round started off as unassuming as you might expect from two Stvoto Latolisi clubs with no real axes to grind with each other (Gerthamasa Boyseh and Lobyuseistvooshu) - the only thing notable about the nationally televised Tuesday-nighter was that the favored visitors Lobyu had to fight back from a goal down to win. It was a good result from the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse, as it was critical for them to respond to their first loss of the year, inflicted by the Chartreuse-Oranges a week ago. Then on Wednesday night we had a thriller (not) between two enthusiastic (not) clubs vying (not) for the Pool 1 title (which is going to be meaningless post-Schveningen): Pkethat Hevnaje had the 'Birds over for a nice nil-nil draw, Goytow continued their surprisingly good start by defeating Juqha Zhaba, and Cóiméid leapfrogged bye-having Vezhidrupa by getting themselves a road victory over Bei'thatho (who fired their fifth blank in five). Oh right, and those derbies. The Military Derby was pretty crappy; Hozastvu played their usual game (park the bus and hope for a nil-nil) and (typically) it didn't work - Air Force took the first of four results in the series with a late winner. (The Maroon-Reds' home supporters left the match bitching about a 29th minute Lennon Veale goal that had been called offside, but they didn't have a case as the call had clearly been correct.) The Caisleán Luaith Derby, though... well, it wasn't close, but there sure was plenty to talk about. After Brewers scored the first of three goals after an hour had passed since opening kickoff, a dozen pissed-off, pissed-up, and very naked Vortex fans stormed the pitch. The local Chartreuse-Oranges supporters weren't having it, of course, hurling abuse at the visiting fans as they sprinted around the field of play, eluding stewards. The mess took twenty minutes to clean up, and may portend future trouble between the hated enemies as this young season moves ahead. Oh, and Angels and Therakham drew down in the second division. We said we'd mention it.

Didier Simpkin's 73rd minute screamer seemed to have cancelled out Qussay O'Loingseachain's first-half effort (a sweet bending finish from twenty yards away) and given the Varmellese club Gala an important away goal to carry into the second leg, but late drama in Tobyumosyu saw the Brown-Blacks go back ahead on 87 minutes when Quinn Vail's cross got away from young Celyn Breckinridge, caromed off the post, and bulged the onion bag. Not exactly a beauty, but they all count, and the Globe Cup tie is perfectly poised heading into the return leg in Varmelle. Meanwhile that night, Bei'thatho's 4012 woes continued as they were shut out by Calill United in the SBCC. The Pirates' trip to The Sarian was as fruitless as their league campaign has been, and even though they have a home leg to look forward to, without an away goal their hopes are slim. Finally, two days later the Mariners faced off against the Mariners in Fajr. The weather was wet and the pitch was slick, and this favored attacking football. Only problem? Noka Mariners' two goals count double, and now Juqha Zhaba have to take the long trip to Jasĭyun needing a win against a team that's no stranger to international competition, in fact arguably has more historical familiarity with the Champions' and Globe Cups than with this somewhat lower-prestige event, the SBCC.

Fresh off the news that Stvoto Latoli will be hosting a pair of UICA finals later this year, attendances were a tick higher this weekend - this is spite of the fact that the league already appears decided. It's been known for a while that Pool 2 will win the Schveningen, and the order is starting to settle in that pool. A so-called Big 4 have developed in this young season: Brewers, Lobyuseistvooshu, Vezhidrupa, and Cóiméid, and Brewers, current leaders of that elite group, began the matchday with a two-point cushion. Their tie with Cóiméid was the first in a Saturday night doubleheader, and though it was a bit of a bore to watch, Brewers obtained a valuable road win at Bridget Kilkenny (which as readers will know is no easy task). It was the Chartreuse-Oranges' first non-win of the season, though, and supporters will be feeling some disappointment - after all, they could have extended a multiple-matchday lead over their nearest challengers in the table (Lobyuseistvooshu, who had the weekend off). In the second match of the nationally televised doubleheader, Pkethat Hevnaje tumbled downward in the standings after being shellacked by red-hot Quinn Vail's hat trick in Tobyumosyu (Stvozhaboythumow, meanwhile, move top of Pool 1). The next day, Sunbirds supporters watched their Reds dismiss Goytow in a game that shouldn't have been as close as it was, the Purple-Whites upset Hozastvu in Šešri’makaru to nab their first three-point result of the year (the win was desperately needed, as they're still in the relegation zone, but at least they're within striking distance of the teams above them now), and Vezhidrupa's defense, which had looked rather shaky in the season's opening weeks, appeared to right itself by parking the bus for a solid win over Bei'thatho (who have lost six out of six now). Finally, in a match that could have crucial implications if the dominance of the "Big 4" is to be broken, Vortex allowed Gerthamasa Boyseh to obtain a road win. It was the Purple-Greens' first victory in a month, and it cast the Whirls down the table to sixth in Pool 2. That spot will almost certainly not turn out to be the relegation zone, since as previously noted Pool 1 has little chance of defeating Pool 2 in the Schveningen, but 'Tex will still be disappointed to have dropped three points at home.

With two away goals to show for their trouble in Fajr seven days prior, Noka were always going to be able to play as aggressively or conservatively as they liked - either game plan could work. They went with the former, and that worked out fine. Shoyzhathoshoy Shi got himself sent off in the 22nd minute and from there on out it was an onslaught for Anwar Lynch's men. Two nights before, another Stvoto Latolisi SBCC participant had dropped out of the competition, as Bei'thatho's lackluster showing in the first leg proved fatal. United's away goal on the 56 minute mark all but sealed it, and even though the Pirates wrestled one back in the 87th to draw level in the match, the tie was a lost cause by then. There was some good news for Gu Zhahogowdoo followers, though, as on that same Tuesday night Air Force's spectacular form stayed spectacular in an emphatic two nil away victory. Quinn Vail was once again the hero, scoring both goals, and that means that in the last ten days he's scored an unimaginable six goals. For a guy who was totally out of shape just a few years ago, that's not shabby. The Brown-Blacks progress, drawn in the second preliminary round against Garifunya's defence-minded SV Oranje.

Gu Zizhedoshoy Round of 32

Saturday, 12 May 4012

Sunday, 13 May 4012
Gerthamasa Boyseh 2–0 Eastern Quay

Brewers 2–0 Eihi’thatho
Mastverstveh 3–2 Al Qutilah

It's been a quiet cup thus far in 4012, as the draw's been relatively kind to the bigs and there have been few upsets. The one exception was Cóiméid, who managed to get themselves dumped out on penalties, at home, in the Round of 64. That said, while the Comets have always had a reputation for overachieving in the league, cup specialists they are not, so even that wasn't an altogether world-shaking result. As we look ahead to the octofinals, ten of the fourteen Zhahogowdoo clubs remain in contention for cup glory. Lobyuseistvooshu and Brewers are generally seen as favorites, though Vezhidrupa are more than capable of winning Gu Zizhedoshoy if they pull themselves out of the rut they've been in. Stvozhaboythumow are another club that could be in with a chance; with their pool effectively guaranteed to lose the Schveningen, Air Force have no chance to qualify for UICA competitions and it stands to reason that Gyamfua Zahuzh may double down on the cup in order to qualify for something - given the hot streak the Brown-Blacks are on (they are unbeaten in all competitions since Opening Night nearly two months ago), they'd deserve it.

Vezhidrupa 0–1 Brewers
Cóiméid 3–0 Gerthamasa Boyseh
Vortex 0–2 Lobyuseistvooshu

After a shaky start to 4012, Sunbirds seem to be doing just fine. It was undoubtedly a shock to lose Nataliaja Irmedheghi just before the season began, but their famous offense has been spark-plugged into life. They walked past Juqha Zhaba with ease on Sunday afternoon and sit in Pool 1's second-place spot. They will need to keep their foot on the gas, though - Pkethat Hevnaje had won the night before and were briefly in that runners-up slot. The Red-Whites' victory over Šešri’makaru on national television was notable for four goals - all of which were penalties! (All of PH's goals from the spot were scored by Chidi Ya.) This unusual occurrence might in other cases have been chalked up to crappy weather, but the Purple-Whites play indoors, meaning the referee was too strict. But all of this is academic, however; utterly unstoppable Stvozhaboythumow hammered Goytowlishemei and continue to dominate the pool. Meanwhile in Pool 2, Brewers made Vezhidrupa's season even worse by beating them in Mahathu, Vortex lost at home too (to Lobyuseistvooshu), although they were not expected to get a result in the way that Vezhidrupa were, and Cóiméid took the All-Whites' loss as an opportunity to advance, earning a very hard-fought victory over Gerthamasa Boyseh and moving into third place in Pool 2. Undefeated Brewers remain in the driver's seat by a mile.

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 25 May 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Saturday, 19 May 4012
Lobyuseistvooshu 0–0 Cóiméid
Juqha Zhaba 1–1 Stvozhaboythumow

Sunday, 20 May 4012
Goytowlishemei 0–1 Šešri’makaru
Pkethat Hevnaje 2–0 Hozastvu
Gerthamasa Boyseh 3–1 Vezhidrupa
Brewers 1–0 Bei’thatho

The Saturday night doubleheader promised a lot: Lobyu had a chance to put a ton of distance between themselves and Cóiméid (and keep the pressure on seemingly-invincible leaders Brewers), and Stvozhaboythumow had the chance to continue their utterly superb vein of form. Both contests were let-downs. The first ended up being a nil-nil draw that flattered neither side, the second was a one-all result between a Juqha Zhaba side that looked impressively horrible and Air Force, who looked like they'd all run marathons immediately before the match. Regrettably, the next day wasn't much better. Šešri’makaru obtained their second win of the season with a pretty good free kick goal from distance, but other than that, PH took advantage of a 7th minute Hozastvu own goal to coast to victory, Vezhidrupa's slump just got slumpier as they capitulated to Gerthamasa Boyseh (who, according to captain Yachušechedra Wambukawo in a post-match press conference, simply "wanted the three points more"), and Brewers nearly allowed Bei'thatho to obtain their first point of the year before securing a late winner. A solid "meh" on all counts. In fact, easily the most fascinating thing that happened on the weekend was down in League 2, where the Rahish Bay Derby took place. Hated enemies Urajbina and Juvapanam squared off for the first time in a couple years, and the fireworks were angry as usual. Urajbina dominated the first half, scoring two and walking into the tunnels at half time feeling very good about their chances. But watching the beginning of the second half must have felt like taking a ride in a rock polisher for the home fans - Juvapanam blasted out of the gates at a pace unseen from the Sky and Silver thus far this season. They halved the lead in the 52nd minute and arguably should have drawn level in the 71st - a Juvapanam striker was chopped down on the edge of the area (replays showed the Urajbina defender was without question aiming for the man and not for the ball), but the referee refused to give a penalty, instead dishing out an unjust yellow (for simulation) to the Juvapanam forward, who was apoplectic with rage. Urajbina took advantage, scoring their third three minutes later and securing a controversial victory.

The midweek international club competitions went pretty well for Stvoto Latolisi sides, a welcome contrast to the prior weekend's doldrums. The Globe Cup contest between Stvozha and Oranje was the first tie we bore witness to, and it was a beauty. Air Force proved that perhaps they had been mentally resting while they slouched through that Saturday night match with the Mariners, as they laid waste to SV Oranje's much-vaunted back line. The next night, another club from the Maritime Empire won, though their opposition were a tad bit more controversial - Death to Saintland FC visited Caisleán Luaith to take on Vortex. Given that the Gregoryisgodistani side found themselves referenced in an official UICA communique some weeks ago, the Whirls might have been on guard, but as it turned out the two outfits apparently got on swimmingly. The contest itself ended two one to 'Tex, a result that both teams seemed to feel good about, and allegedly upper managers within the Vortex club structure had conversations about developing a formal working relationship between the two, with one anonymous team official quoted as saying: "To be blunt we have no particular animus towards Saintland; however, we really admire this group's frank hatred of their enemies, a vitriol which we also share, though in our case for the cesspit of a club that is Brewers." Apparently, however, talks between the two sides broke down after the Gregoryisgodistani side demanded that Vortex rename itself "Death to Brewers FC" as a stipulation. Finally, Sunbirds put in the least convincing of performance of the three Stvoto Latolisi teams involved in the midweek's games - they were nearly shut out by Norrehavn's FC Nyhavn, only halving the deficit 6 minutes before the final whistle blew. "It was a pretty poor performance," admitted Reds boss Mezhergoy Serthidi cautiously after the game, "but when he [right winger Gidedu Shegalo] tucked in that away goal, I knew we'd at least have a chance in the second leg, and we do." Sunbirds are the only club from Stvoto Latoli to have qualified for the Champions' Cup this season - their elimination would send them into the Globe Cup qualifying stages and boot the Maritime Empire from the world's most prestigious club football competition.

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 31 May 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Saturday, 26 May 4012
Šešri’makaru 0–2 Juqha Zhaba

Sunday, 27 May 4012
Hozastvu 1–4 Goytowlishemei
Stvozhaboythumow 2–0 Sunbirds
Bei’thatho 0–2 Gerthamasa Boyseh
Vezhidrupa 1–1 Lobyuseistvooshu
Cóiméid 5–2 Vortex

And lo, upon us descends the Weekend of the Great Two Nil as ordained by St. Margaret, Patron Saint of Calculators. Three decisions finished with that final scoreline, including the first of the matchday, Juqha Zhaba's road win a few miles up the coast in Šešri’makaru. The Mariners collected their first victory since early April, when they beat the very same Purple-Whites they beat this weekend. Juqha Zhaba can hardly be called an impressive outfit, but they are now in Pool 1's fifth place spot, three points clear of the drop. Hozastvu could have closed that gap the next day when they squared off against Goytow, but instead Navy were torn to shreds by the ruthless Vendors and sit now at the very bottom of the table. (Charpabaqhi Ouithima reminded everybody why he's such an important part of the Stvoto Latoli national team setup by scoring an absolute peach of a consolation goal, but the rest of his club team looked unworthy of the maroon and red shirts they were wearing and the home supporters let them know it.) Meanwhile at the top of the Pool 1 standings, Pkethat Hevnaje had the weekend off and they were therefore spectators to the showdown between Stvozha and Sunbirds. Remember that two nil thing we were going on about? Guess what the score was. Air Force racked up yet another impressive clean sheet victory in Tobyumosyu. They've conceded just three goals in nine league matches thus far - those sorts of defensive stats are the kinds of things we'd expect from the Brown-Blacks archrivals, aforementioned stragglers Hozastvu. Anyway, over the the pool that will actually matter come season's end - the Boys threw in another one of those two nils, which would hardly bear mentioning except for the fact that it was at Bei'thatho, their hated (though winless) rivals, and Vezhidrupa outdid themselves by actually taking points off of Lobyuseistvooshu (nobody really fancied the All-Whites given their abysmal form of late), but the North Mahathu club will still have plenty to feel glum about as Gerthamasa Boyseh overtook them in the table and knocked Vezhidrupa out of the top four. Finally, Cóiméid laid waste to Vortex at Bridget Kilkenny in a seven-goal crowd-pleaser. The Comets, flying completely under the radar while Brewers and Stvozhaboythumow hog all the attention, have now quietly gone eight games without a loss and are looking like a firmly safe bet for returning to UICA play next year.

The city of Fahan is relieved: despite facing a deficit obtained in the first leg, their Reds are through to the third round of qualifying for the Champions' Cup. It was hardly a convincing victory, however - Qasim Bahamdan scored the match's solitary goal in the 13th minute with a set piece diving header off a driven Gidedu Shegalo corner kick, but for the next 80 minutes FC Nyhavn pelted Sunbirds' back four with powerful shots, incisive through balls, and technically superior one-touch passing. It was heart-in-mouth stuff as a Reds team ill-equipped to park the bus tried to do just that. They did, but only just. Nyhavn, for their part, will feel incredibly hard done by, given that over both of the two legs they were the better team. But if either outfit learned anything, it's the widely known fact that hosting the second match of a home-and-away tie is always preferable. If you can snatch an away goal against the run of play in the first leg, you can then play a cynical game in Leg 2 to defend your way into the next stage. The 'Birds will be pleased to stay alive in the Champions' Cup, but they'll need to improve to have any chance of getting past Mangolana's Skyline United. Other UICA stuff happened, too, of course. The night before, Air Force had routed Oranje once again and don't look like they can be stopped in any competition (though their next Globe Cup opposition, Kingsgrove of Brecenia, will be a significant step up in quality from their Garifunyan foes this round), and despite widespread optimism among Whirls supporters, Vortex could not secure a result in their away leg against Death to Saintland. They are the third Stvoto Latolisi side to be eliminated from the SBCC - only Šešri’makaru remain.

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 7 June 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Tuesday, 5 June 4012
Goytowlishemei 0–2 Pkethat Hevnaje

Wednesday, 6 June 4012
Sunbirds 3–2 Šešri’makaru
Juqha Zhaba 1–3 Hozastvu
Vortex 2–0 Vezhidrupa
Lobyuseistvooshu 2–0 Bei’thatho
Gerthamasa Boyseh 2–1 Brewers

After taking a slight break to allow football fans to spend the weekend taking in the opening matches of the 58th Baptism of Fire tournament for international sides new to the global scene, league play resumed in the midweek. The Tuesday night contest featured sleeper side Pkethat Hevnaje, who've been lurking behind Pool 1 leaders Stvozhaboythumow for a while now and knew they could close some distance by taking advantage of Stvozha's bye, and Goytowlishemei, who were a bit lucky to have escaped the drop after having had an atrocious 4011 and have carpe-ed the shit out of that diem by making significant improvements to their squad. The Vendors have been solid on the goalscoring front thus far (though their defense is a little suspect), but they found the Red-Whites much too hard to break down, and PH hit them on the break a couple times to take the three points. The next evening, Sunbirds also closed some of the gap between themselves and the top by playing out a thoroughly exciting three two result against Šešri’makaru. The Purple-Whites, for their part, have been looking a little better over the last couple weeks (though anything would be better than the way they started the year: horribly), and given the stature of their opposition, they ought to be rather pleased heading into their first SBCC qualifying match next week. They will not be so pleased, however, to have watched Hozastvu's victory in Fajr over Juqha Zhaba, as Mariner Shoyzhathoshoy Shi's equalizer in the 83rd minute didn't stand up through injury time and the three points gained for the Navy Club threw Šešri’makaru back down to the bottom of Pool 1. In Pool 2, meanwhile, it was upsets galore. Gerthamasa Boyseh looked over the moon after they managed to come back from a goal down to defeat leaders Brewers two-one in Tobyumosyu (the frustrated Chartreuse-Oranges, meanwhile, will be enraged at having been dealt loss number one of 4012), and Vortex bounced back from their heartbreaking SBCC elimination by shocking ice-cold Vezhidrupa in Caisleán Luaith. Finally, Lobyuseistvooshu became the only member of Pool 2's "Big Four" to obtain a result of any kind (Cóiméid had the matchday off) by hammering pathetic Bei'thatho.

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 12 June 4012

Gu Zhahogowdoo

Saturday, 9 June 4012
Pkethat Hevnaje 3–0 Juqha Zhaba
Šešri’makaru 2–2 Stvozhaboythumow
Brewers 1–1 Lobyuseistvooshu

Sunday, 10 June 4012
Hozastvu 1–2 Sunbirds
Bei’thatho 0–1 Vortex
Vezhidrupa 4–0 Cóiméid

At this point the odds on Bei'thatho finishing the 4012 season winless have to be getting really short, don't you think? If they can't get even a point at home against the second-last place team in their pool (Vortex), how are they going to get points anywhere? And yet the ridiculous irony is that Pool 2 is so strong the Pirates are just about guaranteed to stay up. Whether they'll survive 4013, though, is another story - the dual-phase system currently in use in Gu Zhahogowdoo is being scrapped after this year ends. Whatever. As far as the rest of Pool 2 is concerned, Vezhidrupa finally won, and they won angry, shellacking Cóiméid four nil. The All-Whites closed the four-point gap between themselves and fourth-place Gerthamasa Boyseh to a single point. Meanwhile at the top, Brewers failed to win for the second time in a row (and yet only the third time this season), held to a one-all result at home. Visitors Lobyuseistvooshu celebrated the draw like it was a win - they remain just one point back from the leaders. Over in Pool 1 it was a bad, bad day at the office for Stvozhaboythumow, who have played so well thus far this season but could not have had a worse weekend. Pkethat Hevnaje won at home in the Saturday afternoon game (destroying hapless Juqha Zhaba three nil) and then that evening Air Force's trip to nearby Šešri’makaru wound up being an utter catastrophe. The Brown-Blacks took a one-goal lead twice in the game, first in the 15th minute and then (after the Purple-Whites equalized in the 36th) in the 77th, but the home side, who look to be finding a vein of form (well, that's a relative term for a team that's looking like a lock for relegation come season's end) obtained another equalizer just two minutes later. Šešri’makaru's engine looks to be sputtering to life just in time - their SBCC qualifying matches begin this week, but Stvozha, on the other hand, cannot afford to run out of gas - they've been great so far in the Globe Cup process but a trip-up now and all their efforts will be for naught. The next day, Sunbirds might have drawn in Tobyumosyu versus Navy, but Romulušam Ruvumighu managed to score a late own goal to hand the Reds a win and rub salt in Air Force's wounds. (The more conspiracy-theory-friendly Stvozhaboythumow supporters are already muttering about a white fix - the idea that archrivals Hozastvu deliberately lost to Sunbirds because they knew it would hurt Stvozha's Pool 1 title push and because, with Šešri’makaru drawing and Juqha Zhaba losing the day before, losing wouldn't hurt the Navy Club too much as they have a game in hand.)

The midweek international competitions started in somewhat suspect fashion for Stvoto Latolisi sides on Tuesday night. Brewers won - however, they found themselves conceding two away goals to Estenian side Kortu Dunamo in the final ten minutes of the match. The Chartreuse-Oranges have been in less than strong form in the league as of late, so many expected a slight letdown in the Globe Cup, but to see the Caisleán Luaith side truly hanging by a thread heading into the away leg - that was a bit surprising. The Purple Whites’ trip to Pasarga was productive (sort of) - they conceded four goals, but they scored four as well and that truckload of away goals could be enough to see them through the SBCC tie against heavily favored Riis. The next day, Wednesday, was a significant improvement, with champions Sunbirds defeating Skyline United 2 goals to nil. Vigean O’Blighe scored a rare defender’s brace on the occasion. Sunbirds' push to participate in the Champions' Cup group stage is very much still on. Thursday, of course, closed out the week's UICA competitions. The two Stvoto Latolisi outfits involved were Lobyuseistvooshu and Stvozhaboythumow (both in the Globe Cup). While the former lost to Gregoryisgodistani Prune Farmers at home, a result that could and should prove catastrophic, Air Force managed to secure a one all draw against Kingsgrove (who hail from Brecenia), Baja'khirušu Mha equalizing in the 76th minute. The Brown-Blacks had a dreadful weekend, but this result may be enough to see them progress.

Whose idea was it to play this game at night? It was the night of the Caisleán Luaith Derby, starring hated enemies Vortex and Brewers (the former at home). As you would anticipate, there were huge verbal conflicts between supporters of the two clubs prior to the match. What should also have been anticipated was that the Saturday night timing for the game would lead to fans arriving very inebriated. This exacerbated the problem, and led to physical violence between supporters that delayed the beginning of the contest for an hour. The referees strongly considered canceling the match, but after they decided to go ahead with the game anyway, the Chartreuse-Oranges won two-nil, looking like they had something to prove after their disappointing UICA performance. The next day, another hotly contested rivalry was played out, this being the Military Derby between Air Force and the Navy Club. The Brown-Blacks came away victors. They failed, however, to reclaim first place, as Sunbirds lost to the Red-Whites at home (the ‘Birds, for their part, seemed to suffer from the classic “post-international-competition-letdown”). The Mariners and the Vendors squared off in Fajr - the result was a three-all draw that Juqha Zhaba will feel disappointed with, as Shoyzhathoshoy Shi scored a brace in the first nine minutes, and Bei'thatho remain winless after their trip to Teach Iarann, Cóiméid registering another composed victory. Finally, Lobyuseistvooshu redeemed their horrendous midweek performance by impressively defeating Gerthamasa Boyseh three-one.

"I'm unhappy," said Gyamfua Zahuzh counterintuitively in a press conference an hour after watching his brown-and-black-clad players hang on for a goalless draw to move forward in the Globe Cup. "We let them [Kingsgrove] control the entire midfield for ninety minutes, and we can't afford that! Our guys at the back... look, they're doing their best, but they can't handle the sort of pressure they were under today." When Zahuzh was asked how he could be so cantankerous while Stvozha supporters were celebrating in the streets just meters away, he only shrugged and muttered something about being lucky. Clearly, the result was not satisfying, and perhaps this is why Air Force are rumored to be preparing to bring in a center back on the international transfer market. In Zahuzh's defense, it had been a nervy day for Stvoto Latolisi teams - Lobyuseistvooshu conceded a second goal early in their Globe Cup tie with Prune Farmers and though they pulled one back later on, it wasn't enough, and the Red, Gray, and Chartreuse were put out at the first time of asking. The day before had been better - Sunbirds notched another two-nil win to coast through their tie with Skyline United and they are enticingly close to becoming the first Stvoto Latolisi side to qualify for the Champions' Cup group stage. Tuesday was better even than that: Brewers destroyed Kortu Dunamo in Estenia, Satatu Bei's two goals and two assists being the difference-maker, and Šešri’makaru show no signs of nerves as they were two nil up before the twenty minute mark. Their opponents Riis pulled two back to finish the game two-all and the tie six-all, but the Purple-Whites held on through the match's late throes (thanks in no small part to their elite keeper Pachomiušam Ouachaburughu) and Šešri’makaru's four away goals in the opening leg ultimately sealed their advancement to the SBCC Playoff Round. They, too, are two matches and one tie away from coveted group stage play in a UICA tournament.

Pkethat Hevnaje 2–0 Stvozhaboythumow
Hozastvu 2–1 Šešri’makaru
Brewers 1–0 Cóiméid
Bei’thatho 0–3 Vezhidrupa

All the sudden, Pkethat Hevnaje are the on-form team in Pool 1 and they seem to be pulling away. It took an hour before they managed to break Air Force down in their home contest with the Brown-Blacks, but in the end they did what Kingsgrove had failed to three days before, and they did it twice. Stvozha fall four points back. Sunbirds, too, had a post-UICA letdown - ambitious Goytow kept it tight and kept the 'Birds famous attack quiet. Then, of course, at the bottom, the Navy Club played that game in hand they had on Juqha Zhaba, and they did exactly what they needed to, recovering from a poor first half and coming from behind to knock off the Purple-Whites (yet another team stereotypically slumping post-UICA-play). So... yeah. As we arrive at the first phase halfway point, PH have abruptly made themselves the team to beat in Pool 1. Meanwhile, in Pool 2, Vezhidrupa threw down another hammering after taking Matchday 13 off with a bye - their victims were Bei'thatho, who this author thinks may have been referred to as "hapless" roughly 341,672,218 times thus far in 4012. The All-Whites have now won their last two matches by a combined margin of seven goals to nil, and it's perfectly plausible to imagine that a sleeping giant has roared awake. But they still have a long ways to go, as there's another giant at the very top who have looked very much awake since the Super Cup in the year's nascent moments: Brewers. The Chartreuse-Oranges, for their part, were the only club involved in the international competitions to win this weekend, and their opposition weren't exactly slouches - Cóiméid have been playing incredibly well thus far but they were utterly no match for their Pool 1-leading Muzira'a Ba'aydi foes, barely advancing the ball past the midfield line for most of the match. They might have hoped to hold on for a nil-nil, but Myuserbaleisoy Yutri's 76th minute winner thwarted those plans. The Comets will have to rebound, and fast, as the day before Gerthamasa Boyseh had defeated Vortex and now both the Purple-Greens and aforementioned Vezhidrupa are breathing down their necks. An international break begins; the Gold-Whites will host the Estenia national football team in a friendly at Avazhughij Arena in Pkethat Šede (the same stadium that will host the SBCC and Youth Cup finals later this year).

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 30 June 4012

Friendly International

Saturday, 30 June 4012 @ Avazhughij Arena, Pkethat Šede, Pazhujeb Islands, Stvoto Latoli
Stvoto Latoli 0-0 Estenia

In an exhibition match that was billed as an infrastructural warm-up to the Series B Champions' Cup Final and UICA Youth Cup Final, both of which will be held at Avazhughij Arena in a few months, the Golden Xantus played their first match since being eliminated from Copa Rushmori XX last year. The game itself was a bore draw, really - both squads are built to defend, after all - but there were no injuries, and isn't that the most important thing? Estenia, the better side in terms of KpB Ranking, did test Shyusoolootru Lyu a few times from long distance in the first forty minutes, but their lackluster showing in the second half gave neutrals the impression that they just didn't fancy the effort it might take to break down Brendan al Tameer's notoriously organized back line. A couple Gold-Whites players (Doran Palmer and Charpabaqhi Ouithima) picked up yellow cards on the hot afternoon, but cautions in friendlies don't have any bearing on later matches, do they?
But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. As I leapt atop my broom, I could already hear the wailing of the merpeople from the depths; their last shred of dignity, the last remnant of their kingdom, their last symbol of hope; raped by the tyrannical humans.

Stvoto Latolisi Football - 6 July 4012

Friendly International

Osarius 2–0 Stvoto Latoli

At the Ursinopolis in Utica, Osarius dismantled Stvoto Latoli in their sixth of seven friendly victories in a row. 59,000 supporters will perhaps have been a tad disappointed to have seen their beloved national team waste as many chances as they did, but in fairness to the team ranked number one in the world, Shyusoolootru Lyu was incredible, notching nearly a dozen saves, many of which were from point-blank range. The Gold-Whites will leave Utica feeling as though they got a very good result despite the loss.

4012 Yazheri'ajat Ivesh Pazhujeb Islands

Yazheri (or water polo, as it is known in the national language of the Maritime Empire, English) is the national sport of the Pazhujeb Islands, and has been for over a thousand years. Before the Islands were stumbled across by Western civilization, yazheri was played in the open ocean with a much smaller ball and slightly different rules, but the sport was largely the same. After international integration, Pazhujebis slowly began to play the game in the style of the rest of the world, and now "Pazhujebi-code" yazheri is played only at special cultural events.

Because of the traditional significance of the sport and its role as a national symbol, water polo has been restricted for some time in the Maritime Empire, but following the 4010 elections the new ruling coalition pledged to loosen rules about cultural iconography. Now, nearly two years later, the inaugural season of the Water Polo League of the Pazhujeb Islands, or YIPI, has completed its first short season. Seven clubs from the each of the major Pazhujebi cities and one from the Stvoto Latolisi capital took part.

The young league's best-supported club by a mile, Mahathu YL, was good but inconsistent at times, and they seemed to wilt in the season's final matchdays, allowing the incredibly talented and well-coached Emuzhezh YL to march to the top of the pack and remain there. But looking back on the year, it will still be the games between Emuzhezh and Mahathu that we may see as the most relevant in looking ahead to the future. Emuzhezh dropped just four points on the year, and all of them were to the blue-and-black-wearing juggernauts. Additionally, the league's only non-Pazhujebi side Tobyumosyu, who might as well play their games in a pool inside a bank for the amount of dough they have to throw around, have promised to invest more after seeing surprisingly adequate attendances. Emuzhezh are the champions, but the YIPI may be considerably more competitive when it is played again next year.
