I also think I'll just cancel the team battles for now, it doesn't seem to me that they'll fare very well as things stand now.

I don't really think TGing me the winner is going to make much of a difference, considering I wasn't planning to delve too much into that given we're going to be cutting the duels short and all.

Appearance:slender, pale but surprisingly wiry. Has dark eyes that are a little sunken and a perpetually frowning brow.

Bio: "As long as there has been an order of the black cup there have been Cortagnes to lead it." But as the the order slowly dwindled so too did the Cortanges and with the death of Alfenn's older brother in combat five years ago they number only two, Ruen Cortagne, grandmaster of the order of the black cup and Alfenn Cortange, his second son. Alfenn was born into a world of grim dedication to duty, literally as his mother gave birth during a surprise raid by heathen remnants surrounded by sworn knights of the order preparing to defend their position with their lives. Although the assault was beaten back severe damage to the facilities medical equipment ensured Alfenn's mother did not survive.

Alfenn's upbringing was left to his father and a pack of iron fisted tutors who compensated for their lack of scholarly aptitude with sternness and a fondness for corporal punishment. Alfenn was given no choice but to succeed in all the areas his Father deemed important, chief among them swordplay and military strategy, with the order's history a close second. Although slightly frail by nature, his training has mostly overcome this issue and Alfenn is a competent swordsman for his age albeit a dispassionate one. Utterly forbidden to him was the frivolous pursuits of music and the arts but Cortange stubbornness reared it's head and they enraptured him. Many a dark night was spent infiltrating the archives of the order and pouring over digitised records of art from all ages or listening to recordings of music from the order's golden years.

While Alfenn grew into a reserved and brooding young man the order around him continued crumbling inexorably. Outpost after outpost was abandoned, retiring knights were not replaced with younger ones and eventually commoners were permitted use of the order's facilities in exchange for contributing to their upkeep. Growing desperate and having exhausted his local allies with his fiery temper, Ruenn has pooled the last of his influence and personal wealth into sending his son to study at the prestigious Silver hand academy, in the hopes of attracting allies or beenfactors from within the exponentially more powerful order of the Phantom Blade. For his part Alfenn is happy to be out from under his Father's thumb and able to openly study his own interests. He also has his own plans for the struggling order and so father and son are acting in concert, for now.
Additional Information:
Order of the black cup: A small but respected order long allied to the Phantom Blade. This much was true for the Order of the black cup at the outset of the chalice war but the order's plucky bravery cost it dearly in terms of manpower and leadership, the highest ranking members of the black up tended to be the most likely to die in gloriously futile charges or last stand defensive actions so that by the end of the war all of its outsanding commanders and even most of the merely competent ones were dead. When peace and the time to rebuild arrived the order of the black cup ironically found itself even worse off. Hampered by incompetence or inexperience and splintered by factionalism and even a brief civil war, the order found even those holdings that had survived the war were beginning to dwindle and promising young knights in Black cup worlds began to leave in search of better chances at glory. By the time of Alfenn Cortange's birth the order of the black cup consists of its cathedral world Narcosa, a few scattered outposts and lot of bickering old men. Ruenn Cortagne has held this crumbling inheritance together through sheer force of personality but he hasn't maanged to improve the order's lot. Eventually the outposts will be abandoned and the old men will die and no one is in a hurry to replace them.
Sonomancy: A specialty of the Cortanges and the Order of the Black cup, Sonomancy focuses on the generation and manipulation of sound. Probably originally developed to better transmit orders through magically assisted bellowing, Sonomancy has since been refiend to include a number of useful abilities such as masking sound for a stealthy approach, producing sound elsewhere to misdirect an enemy and even producing an eardrum shattering bang near an enemy's ears. Recently Alfenn has discovered Snomancy can also function as a makeshift instrument, although he is entirely self taught and not terribly proficient at this yet.
