"Yeah, he jus' asked for a moment to finish changing."

"Fair enough." Kristin smiled. She had liked Toonmar even more than the rest of the team, and was quite happy to get back. She had actively taken an interest in supporting the Quodite hosting bid, and had crossed her fingers when the selection was aired. "Maark, Dani, Honnur and the Joes are both headed over already. Your brother and Skaade both went back to lodging to get some stuff. So we'll just wait for Tommie and get going."

In the event, it didn't take long. Thomas ventured out only a minute or two later, and they started walking off towards the coffee house "The Toasty Bean". They entered, and were greeted by their teammates.

Well, greeted was the wrong word. Maarkus gave them all hearty pats on the back, as did Honorius. Joe Willems simply said 'hi' and Joe Quinn waved and smiled. Dani, of course, came over and just gave them hugs. The team had flown over individually, or in small groups, and so it was there first time off the ice together in months.

Which was a long time, given how close they'd all gotten over the previous year.

"How y'all doin'?" Dani asked them through the group hug.

"Good," Theo replied.

"Just fine," Kristin said.

"Getting better," Thomas observed.

After a moment of this, they all sat down.

"So, about that defender bump-up..." Maarkus began.

The Eizen Roster has not changed, but a new coach has been brought in to better utilize the high scoring potential of the Eizen top lines.

If my opponent RPs first, they may:

Team Philosophy:

Eizen will work matchups to the best of its ability, combining power and speed on each blue line pairing and bringing two high quality defensive lines to counter the top scorers on each team, and one elite scoring line that will aim to perform at an elite level even against other teams' top checking lines. Should anyone happen to get a shot through, Eizen's goaltending is some of the best in the world.

Eizen Hockey Notes:
-Sudden Death Overtime for every game, shootouts in place for exhibitions.
-Fighting is permitted and encouraged by officials to settle on ice disputes before they linger
-Strict anti-drug regulations are in effect due to health detriments, owners did not want their investments damaging themselves long term
-Ice Hockey is the most popular sport in the Grand Empire of Eizen

The Imperial team's quest for redemption begins soon. The same roster has been kept together and more practices have been held as the unit seeks to improve cohesion and create the atmosphere needed to be a champion once again.

Line #1: (Amazing scoring line)

-LW #54 Ryan Roberts


Getzlav, the overall points and assists leader in the league has some familiarity with Paavo when they teamed up with the San Atana Steelclaws to win the Emperor's Cup in 2007 before Selanne's signing with the Ultima Ice Marshals in 2009. Ryan Roberts was the rookie of the year in 2008 with the Azure Coast Krakens and has emerged as a top scorer who can also finish a check with the best of them.

The second line is a balanced attack, these skaters are known for strong play on both sides of the puck. They won't score as many goals as the first line or stop as many shots and ring up hits like the third line but they will keep the goaltender from having to do more than his share of work.

Cleaver is an Eizen native who has been playing in the Neon Simian Elite League for years. Pietro Gryphon is the de facto leader of the Kouhawg Shenanigans and is known as the best active player to have never played in an Emperor's Cup final. Lenny Quagmire, known almost as much for off ice antics as his on ice play, scores often and makes excellent passes to whomever he skates with.

The first of the two outstanding checking lines is known for sheer brutality.

Line #3: (Punishing, hard hitting defensive line with great forechecking)

-LW #16 George Pathos


These three actually play on the same team, the Oblivion City Kaos, and have the best plus minus rating of any line in each of the last five seasons. Ekles trophy winner and mustachioed George Pathos is the premier fighter in the Eizen Pinnacle League as well.


The second of the two checking lines does not hit quite as hard, but play incredibly smart defense and block a lot of shots.

Line #4: (Responsible tight defensive line that blocks every shooting and passing lane possible)

Paul Samuelsson could be the best face off man in any nation, and he wiull be taking the majority of defensive zone face offs he can be on the ice for. Sean Prongermeyer and Rob Niedermonger live in the shadows of their more famous brothers, who form a defensive pairing for the Eizen team, but have made names of their own and have been know to poke check a pass to one another for breakaway goals and shorthanded opportunities.

The titans of the blue line in Eizen combine for the first time to make Eizen's blue line a formidable force. Capable of playing nearly thirty minutes per game if called upon, these two will be relied upon to deliver a strong showing in this tournament. Niedermongers effortless skating combined with Prongermeyer's relentless defense makes them almost unbeatable. Prongermeyer's tendency to committ penalties would be the one flaw in this pairing.

Also known as the "nickname pairing" as these two have the most identifiable nicknames in Eizen sports. Mack Matthews in particular got his nickname from a devastating slapshot that has been tracked as the hardest in Eizen history and is known for leaving its mark on opposing goaltender's helmets.

These defenseman are known for debilitating open ice hits, the same speed and reach they use to track down their quarry is also greatly utilized to keep pucks in the zone to create additional scoring chances.

Paired together because of their great chemistry on the North Eizen Iceshrikes, these are two of the most responsible puckhandlers in hockey.

Although Michael Fromdwight and Jimbo Slyce are excellent goaltenders, there is no doubt that the best goaltender in the Empire of Eizen and its occupied and annexed territories is Sebastian Jigair. Rising from obscurity has has elevated good teams to greatness, and great teams to championships single handedly. He has never before played with a defense in front of him even close to this good.

Jimmy is a strong 24 year-old man that owns and pwns everyone at goalie. He has only let 7 pucks in the net his whole carrer. Also, If you get a puck in, you will die!!...In the morning. Jimmy has never been injuried or stuck to something in any way.

Daylon Orali/LDM/#2/AGE: 22
Standing at 6,3 and weighing at 202 lbs is none other than the great Left defense man Daylon Orali! He is a beast at defending and can stop anyone dead in their tracks, Literally, he stops people and kills them. Be afraid! Anyhow, Daylon is a good hockey player and an average person.

Connor Sakillai/RDM/#3/AGE: 26
Connor isn't good at defending, nor does he know what a Right Defense man is. But, he does know that he can play hockey better than anyone on the team. He is a pro at hockey. Just like how Jaleel White was good at basketball.

Jorge Gamienvie/CF/#7/AGE: 21
Jorge is a Mexican-American who can play just like everyone else. He is good at centerfowarding, he's a nice person, and loves the game of hockey. He is often reffered to as a "hockey fantic or fanboy" but he only likes the game, he doesn't worship it! Why? Do you think he goes to The Holy Church of Hockey Pucks?! Seriously?!!

Alexei Borordin/LWF/#5/AGE: 20
Alexei is a freshly drafted Russian hockey player. Russians are good at hockey, right? (no offense). Alexei is from Vladivostok, Russia and played as a foward in the Russia Men's Olympic Hockey Team in the winter Olympics. He dreams of becoming a pro hockey player and move to Alaska to play in the Alaska Hockey Team, which doesn't exist but try telling him that! Alexei is a nice person and has little temper issues.

Giovanni Stripes/RWF/#10/AGE: 19
Giovanni is an Italian-American who isn't familiar with hockey. His natural sport is soccer or "Calcio" as he calls it. Though, he is getting better at the game and improves everyday. He is nice, strong, and ready to play anytime of the day.

Coach Mark Bilbo to return coaching Teinohikira hockey team


Coach Mark Bilbo, the former Teinohikira baseball coach, has decided to return coaching the Teinohikira Hockey Team and get them ready for the 12th World Cup of Hockey. Bilbo hopes that this year Teinohikira could at least make it to the playoffs this year, instead of going down the toilet in the first round. Bilbo says "I really believe we have a shot this year, the players are motivated, strong, and ready to play." Bilbo wants to turn this team around and start getting them some wins, because they haven't won a game in decades. The Teinohikira Hockey Team plays in the 12th World Cup of Hockey on June 7th, Mark Bilbo says "Don't miss it!" Bilbo is expected to have a losing team yet again this year, and go "GFO" on the people who made this game. Bilbo is also expected to get fired from his coaching job like from baseball, this year also. Though, Bilbo is confident and has his team warmed up and prepared for this game.

"Well maybe not 3 unranked teams who are all easy win as it happens for us. And I think we could still beat Delaclava as it happens. They may be 11th in the world but we could still shock the bookies a bit."

*SIGH*

"Why did you sigh?"

"Well even if we did make it through what can we do from then on it. We will have to do a hell of a lot to make it beyond the round of 16 match which okay we still don't need to conserve energy but it helps us."

"Okay so we might crash out at the latest in the quarter-final if your a pessimist. If you an optimist like me we could win the whole damn thing!"

"Yeah okay. But I still think that we suck. And I want a burger anyway can we get a burger?"

"No we need to drive to our hotel now I'm getting bored of sitting in the airport departures lounge."

"Oh okay hop in the hire van."

The two players jumped in the awaiting run down ford transit van. The engine spluttered into life and it jolted forward and nearly fell to pieces after every bump.

"SO THIS IS BUMPY."

"I KNOW AND LOUD!"

"WHY COULDN'T WE GET BETTER TRANSPORT?"

"BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THE SPORTS FEDERATION ARE CHEAPSKATES."

"I GUESS THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE!"

"I'M NOT TALKING NOW OR I'LL LOSE MY SHOUTY VOICE FOR THE GAMES!"

"OK!"

Much later they arrived at the hotel.

"Ah finally a nice comfy bed and some warm food!"

"I wouldn't get your hopes up."

They both walked into the hotel. It was dark and damp. They're were rats scuttling around and they're was some red stains in the corner to worry about.

"Let go up to our room."

They walked up the stairs to they're room.

"HOORAY BEDS!"

"They both collapsed on the bed and then the bed collapsed.

"OW!"

"What?"

"A rat bit me!"

"We need to get you to hospital!"

"Ah no rush I don't think it was rabid."

"We still need to go!"

"Okay."

They rushed to hospital and after treatment they made a wise decision not to go back to the hotel.

"So where are we going to stay?"

"How about the premier inn over the street?"

"Okay I'll pay."

Ad’ihan prepare for fourth try at hockey title

New Cleethorpes, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST— The Ad’ihani national hockey team has had three shots at this now. And they're here in Quintessence of Dust once again for their fourth attempt to win the grand prize, the World Cup of Hockey.

Making their debut in World Cup of Hockey 8, Ad’ihan recorded its best-ever result at a World Cup by making it out of its five-team group on goals scored, falling to hosts and eventual champions Valanora 2–0 in the quarterfinals. Next time out in Septentrionia, Ad’ihan painfully missed out on the playoffs despite finishing level on points with Dancougar, having won a game less. The misfortune caused the team to choose to sit out WCoH 10, making their return last time out in Kynythin, Quintessence of Dust, where they finished bottom of a group won by eventual third placed team Sarzonia.

And now, they're back again. Perhaps this time they'll at least make the playoffs again — but, drawn in the Group of Death with The Babbage Islands, Secristan and defending champions Cassadaigua (who they also faced in their WCoH 9 group) — it will be a rough ride.

Dani snorted. "That 'trick' the Cyrelians tried on us last time around? It didn't even work! The reason we lost that one was bad officiating and a lack of discipline. The defender-bump-up had nothing to do with it; it didn't confuse anyone, it didn't screw up our pacing or timing, and it sure as hell didn't get them any extra points."

Maarkus sniggered. "Of course it didn't. Geez, Dani, it was a joke."

She shook her head, smiling. "Well, then, you should have said so." She nudged him with her elbow.

Their conversation continued, breaking down the tactics necessary to beat each front they might encounter, discussing potential personnel match-ups, maneuvers, and merits of their domestic teams.

The last one turned out a little one-sided. There were three guys from the Crimson, after all.

"Copenhagen's the best. That's that." Joe Quinn declared, with a heavy note of finality to the statement.

"Saints," growled Theo and Waaltur. Honorius nodded in agreement. The Saints, for those who didn't know, were the primary rivals of the Crimson in the FHL. Copenhagen Crimson vs. St. Theodore Saints. "The Slug-Out."

"Valkyries. Plain an' simple." That was Dani, grinning broadly now. "You know our ladies can kick all your butts."

"Who's won more national championships than anyone else?" That was Maarkus.

"Who's second? And who made it to the finals last year?" Honorius retorted.

Thomas snorted. "You lost to the Tide, same as us! We just played 'em one game earlier than you!"

Theo shrugged. "Doesn't matter. We still got to the Blizzard Cup Final. You didn't."

Kristin sighed. "The testosterone is getting almost unbearable here, guys. Any more of it floating around and I'll start growing a beard from the surplus."

That broke the argument, and laughter bellowed around the table.

One by one, as it got later and they finished their coffee, the players left, usually in twos or threes.

Maarkus, Honorius and the Joes left as a group. Theo and Kristin left together. Dani and Thomas stayed behind.

"Another round?" Thomas asked with a small smile.

"That's the only time I've ever heard that statement applied to coffee," she replied with a chuckle. "Sure. I can get my own, though."

They each got a second cup of coffee, and sat back down.

Naturally, they got back a bit later than everyone else, tired, but both thoroughly pleased. Good conversation wasn't something you got all that often.

Now, I know you've heard the news and papers, who expect us not to make it past the first 3 games. But you know what, lets show them Clan style who is going to take the Cup home!" Now then, I want my starters at one end, back ups at the other, time for practice to start." The starters and the back ups played practice matches against each other all day, it was the way Larry did practice. He believed if you pitted starters against back ups, both sides get very good.

Hard hitter, can pitch in on the power play, but usually isn't the point man with the man advantage.
5 Craig Langhorn, 36, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds. Team captain.
Relies on positioning and experience to defend against all comers. Paired with Weinert to help the young player learn.

Second pair
2 Lorne Davis, 26, 6-foot, 200 pounds.
Not super-fast, but an extremely hard hitter. Plays a stay-at-home defensive style.
6 Mia Chretién, 23, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds.
Can move the puck in and out of the zone well. Sometimes used on the front line during penalty kills.

Third pair
7 Joel Fitzgerald, 29, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds.
Not known as a hitter, but has better make-up speed than any other Stars defender.
18 Jack Bradley, 24, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds.
Size, speed and hard hitting make him a feared defender to go up against.

Seventh defenceman
14 Calen Willis, 28, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds
An offensive defenceman all the way, led Sarzonia's league in goals by a defenceman three years running.

FORWARDS
First line

Left wing: 8 Sylvan Turcotte, 23, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.
Lefty shooter with the hardest shot on the team. Led his league with 38 goals in 54 games.
Centre: 9 Joe Perkins, 27, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds. Alternate captain.
Best at winning faceoffs of any Stars player. A gritty player who'll willingly go into the boards, but that occasionally results in injuries.
Right wing: 10 Steven Miller, 31, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. Alternate captain.
Hardest worker on the team, also willing to go into the boards and play physically.

Second line
Left wing: 13 Cameron Granato, 24, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
A righty shooter even though he plays left wing. Provides some scoring punch for the second line (24 goals in 52 games).
Centre: 15 Jon Tippett, 33, 6-foot, 185 pounds.
Led the league in assists and is a frequent presence on the power play as a distributor.
Right wing: 17 Mark Ridley, 28, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds.
Another prolific scorer, he scored 31 goals in 50 games for his team two years ago.

Third line
Left wing: 21 Marco Osterland, 31, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds.
Strong presence on special teams, has some scoring touch but is better known for his defence.
Centre: 23 Giancarlo Ovecezcu, 27, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds.
Uses leverage and cat-like reflexes to win defensive end face offs. Good puck handler.
Right wing: 24 Ray Olendorff, 22, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Plays harder than most. Is now much improved in conditioning, but meshes so well with the third line that he only plays on the other lines in knockout stage matches.

Fourth line
Left wing: 25 Alan Donald, 27, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds.
Sarzonia's designated enforcer, led the league in penalty minutes three consecutive seasons.
Centre: 26 Troy Hammer, 28, 6-foot-3, 230 pounds.
Built like a gridball linebacker, he hits like one. Would be an enforcer if he didn't have a surprisingly deft touch in front of the goal.

"Much. As for my reasons? Let's put it this way, the thing I do best is 'Motivation'. In my playing days I was on the third line and I was forced to do most of my 'motivation' from the far end of the bench and when my Coach wanted me to come into the game and 'motivate' some asshole on the other team through the glass and into the fifth row of seats. I figured, i'm still young, I could probably 'motivate' an entire roster better and get a lot more money. I think my record speaks for itself."

"So how do you respond to the criticism that your style lacks finesse?"

*In between massive bites of raw steak* "I'm not going to lie, finesse is a part of this game, but that doesn't mean I have to use it to coach. We're Plutoni. Yeah. We have robots, who are in italics. We're not used to sudden death, though we might get used to it soon. We've won the tournament twice. Hooray! Not that we're resting on our laurels or anything.

RPers can do whatsoever they want. Most of the team generally doesn't tend to start fights, though will fight back if provoked. The last couple seasons have seen the Northeast Demons get good, however. They, as well as Wroder and Difire, are a little more likely to instigate stuff.

Pregame went some with a little motivation in the dressing room:

"Come on guys, first game, let's show them who we are," I encouraged, "1.2.3 Blue Jays!"

I led the streches too, "Touch your toes, 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10, lean right 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10, lean left 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10," And went onto streching our arms and back as well

We finished Streching and Coach gave us a simple pep talk: " Don't let your emotions mess up your game," Coach instructed. "fundamentals will be the key rather than physical contact, not to mean I don't want a good check, just use your fundamentals"

We got ready to go, I skated up to the faceoff circle andd postitioned my hands for the opening draw. " Ready 24?" the Ref asked. "Yeap" I replied, and the ref dlet go of the puck...

The stands were rather full, Joe had to admit.

"Alright, Dani. You win. There is a butt-load of them. Noses pressed against the glass."

She smiled. "Told you. The local press is saying how you're the best defenseman since sliced bread."

"That's Artie."

"Artie might be if the broad side of a barn didn't occasionally hit him."

Artie Weiss, sitting in a corner pulling his pads on, paused.

"I resent that."

"It's true!"

"No! I hit the broad side of the barn. Usually the puck don't, but since when does that matter? the barn sure feels it!"

Joe Quinn sighed. "Still, it's not like I'm all that famous or anything. Why on Earth would anyone want to see me? I'm still not that experienced, accomplished, or large--"

He stopped, because Dani, Theo, and Kristin all burst out laughing. "The hell you're not large!" Theo said over a laugh. "You're bigger than Maarkus!" He stopped. "But really! Who'd you think was watching there?! Those ain' all Allamunnae or Skraelings; they don't have the money to travel in those numbers. No, Joe, those are Quodites, and they're anxious to watch you beat the shit out of some Septentrionians."

Joe turned a little red out of embarassment. For all his size, and menace and skill and promise, Joe was still just a big kid, at bottom, not far removed from his teen years.

He tried to focus on the task at hand.

"So, anything that Septentrionia does that we should be on the lookout for?"

Dani shook her head. "Nah. They're pretty conventional. Just have to stick to the fundamentals and pay attention to detail, and give it hard work and we should be fine. Not easy, per se, but simple enough."

Joe nodded. It was simple enough.

Artie, who had been in a corner, quietly preparing, added his own two cents.

"An' we beat the shit outta 'em. Elementary, kid."

Theo nodded.

"And Maarkus and the others are already seeing to a sacrifice of a rubber chicken."

Joe raised an eyebrow and looked extremely put-off.

"Why the hell would they do that?"

Theo shrugged. "Team ritual or something. Said it's gotta be done. I ain' gonna argue. Luck? Beats me. Last time I saw 'em do it, we won a game entirely too easily, so power too 'em. Poor rubber chicken, though."

"But seriously, what's up with that?"

Dani shook her head, smiling knowingly.

Theo added. "I mean, they mentioned something about Margaret. Who's she? She must be one fickle bitch if they're doing that for her."

Dani grinned. "You have no idea."

World Cup of Hockey-Update

Hey guys! The Tutlingburg national team and I have arrived in the city of Dareb in the Quintessence of Dust to play in the World Cup. Since our hotel has some free Internet(woo!), I thought I'd post some of my thoughts on this city, team, and tournament.

First, this city. One word, cold. I was born in the south of Tutlingburg, where winter is a dream. I play for Creek Bay, where it has not snowed in 54 years. Here, in Dareb locals rarely venture outside. Almost everything in town is connected by covered walkways. I can go from my room to the (heated!!!) rink, or to the local canteen without having to freeze to death. Seriously though, these walkways are for safety. The day after we arrived a sudden blizzard blew up and dropped the visibility to nothing. Would be very easy to get lost and die in that crap. Dareb is more or less a mine town, except they don't mine minerals here. They mine natural gas. A local tournament official, who is attached to the team while we stay here, asked us if the team to go to the local museum and learn about his town. Coach saw this as a good way for us to learn about the local culture and after morning practice, off we went. The museum was a short trip down from the hotel, and we spent the afternoon there, learning the history of the region and how this city has grown through the years. After that learning experience, our official(whose name escapes me for the moment) showed us a local canteen, where some of the "gas miners" come and relax with a beer or two. Coach decided we could have dinner there that night, so we did. Many locals came up to us during dinner, and they were all very friendly, most of them just wanted to wish us luck or asked questions about Tutlingburg.

Many of you have sent me e-mails(I try and read as many as I can!) asking about how I feel being on my first national team. It is awesome! All the guys on the team already know each other from the ASHL, but it is kind of weird to be playing with some of the best talent from home. This team has come together pretty well and Coach's decision to pair us young guy with the vets, is certainly going to help us gain some well needed experience. I, for example, am paired up with Louis Douglas. He started his career the year I was born! Doug or "Hammer" as he like to be called, is also my room-mate on this trip. He's a fun guy to be around, and has been giving me some tips both on and off the ice. Hammer also likes to play the occasional joke, as I found out this morning. At 5:55, he burst open the door screaming," FIRE! KID GET OUT OF HERE!". Of course in my half asleep daze I bolted out into hall, in my underwear, panicked, until I saw the whole team in the hall, laughing at me. Don't worry guys, I'll get him back!

Where do I think we'll end up in this tournament? I honestly don't know. Qazox, Delaclava, and Toiletdonia are pretty good teams, while Mohawk Clans and Teinohikira are newcomers like us. I can promise you, we'll try our hardest and hopefully surprise the opposition. Don't forget tomorrows game is on TSN and TTV live at 4 A.M. TEDT.

"I'm not gonna lie to you boys. They are the better team. But you all know the way to beat a better team is to beat them badly. Even if we don't win the game they are the ones that will be covered in bruises tomorrow while we hang our heads for a few minutes and then get ready for the next game. Crush them, crush their spirit, so that no matter what happens the next time they play us they will flinch. Hit them hard every time they cross into our zone, screen our goaltender, forecheck, hit them every time they breathe and hit them harder if they think about hitting back.

Pain is the watchword gentlemen. Delivering pain to our enemies and enduring pain ourselves will deliver us to victory. Living forever is overrated, let's remind those other guys of that fact when their trainer's room looks like battlefield triage.

On a side note, score some fucking goals gentlemen. When our fans and countrymen see the highlights tomorrow we want at least a few of them to be of us looking good. Anyone who makes me look like a jackass is going to be missing more teeth than an exploding dentist's office.

    Fighting

    Fighting is discouraged in the HHL, partly because the fans find it quite boring. Quodite players will, short of the "your mum isn't that committed to the project of social democracy" card, not start fights under any circumstances. They will respond if sufficiently provoked, but won't play it up for the benefit of the crowd. Most of them should be able to handle themselves fairly well, and I guess if the responder gets sucker punched, the others might pile in. In general, I'd prefer RPs considered of more than "and then my winger twatted your defenceman", though.

    Style of play (modifier: -5)

    Quodite hockey is gritty, if unspectacular: very physical, usually relying on just one or two forwards to provide the pace and skills. They will forecheck and backcheck with equal fervour, and also hit a lot of one-timers. In the HHL, charging is not illegal, so this will probably the most common penalty infringement as the team adapt to international rules. Amphetamine use is rampant among the players. An important note is that the average weight of the team is 210 lbs: setting aside the issue of non-humans, this would definitely put them at the heavier end of the spectrum overall.

The Rockets gathered in the locker room prior to the morning skate on the day of the opener of the World Cup of Hockey against Quintessence of Dust. Well, all except Trevor Anderson.

Hennessy (coach): It’s 8:00, time to start. All are here except Trevor, right?

Carpentier (captain): Yes sir. He knew of the starting time. No excuses really. Maybe we should reconsider giving him that A?

Stuart: Let’s not jump to that conclusion. There could be a perfectly valid reason for him not being here. Let’s at least let him say his side of the story first before we talk about punishment.

Hennessy: Brett is right. And I’d like to keep this out of the media unless it’s a real big deal. So let’s just start the meeting. (Hennessy goes into a speech about the significance of the Cup for Newmanistan. You know, that whole “this is an important Cup for us” spiel). About five minutes into the speech, Anderson walks into the door while talking on his cellphone.

Anderson: (on cellphone) if they think I’m gonna pay 20,000 they’re nuts. Surely another contractor would be more honored to work on my patio.... ok, bye (Hangs up). Sorry about that, so does the meeting start soon?

Hennessy: It’s 8:08, the meeting began at 8:00. You’re late.

Anderson: Sorry coach.

Hennessy: That all you have to say about your lateness?

Anderson: I said I’m sorry, what more do you want?

Carpentier: All of us can get to the meeting on time. Just because you are who you are does not give you the excuse to just show up to the meetings whenever you feel like it. You do not get special treatment.

Spencer: And that whole being on the cellphone thing. Very uncool.

Anderson: Sorry, but can you believe that I was quoted.... (gets cutoff)

Hennessy: (doing the interrupting) You’re sitting for the first 8 minutes of the game. And I’m being nice.

Anderson: Whatever. (His cellphone rings). Damn meant to put it on vibrate. Hold up. (Answers phone, has a 60-second conversation and then hangs up).

Hennessy: Make that the entire first period.

Carpentier: As an alternate captain, you need to set a better example.

Anderson: Alright fine, I’m sorry. Let’s have the meeting now.

Hennessy: Yes. Let us resume. Trevor, don’t be late again. (The meeting resumes and concludes).

Fast forward now to a post-game meeting

Hennessy: Not a bad result, playing the hosts in the opener of the tournament is never easy.

Carpentier: Yeah, not that concerned about it. We did a lot of things well, we outshot them 28-13 in the last two periods.

Anderson: And we were outshot 12-2 in the first. I wonder why.

Hennessy: Trevor, you said on your cellphone that you thought it was crazy to pay 20,000 gold coins for patio work?

Anderson: Uh, yeah.

Hennessy: You can pay 20,000 to the Newmanistan Hockey Foundation as a fine instead for your lateness and you’re overall attitude about things. This sense of entitlement you’re beginning to get is just not going to fly in this locker room.

Anderson: What attitude? You cost us the game, coach, by keeping me out of the first period. We were outshot and fell behind 1-0 thanks to it.

Hennessy: Yeah, you did that to yourself.

Anderson: Let’s see what the media thinks.

"Well good day everyone i'm Kent English alongside Jon Berry. Jon, even though our boys lost that had to be one of the most EXCITING games in recent memory yes?"

"Well the ending was certainly, Although the Valanorans had a multiple goal lead for a fair part of the game the number of hits delivered by Eizen was incredible. Coach Oglethrope really stuck to his "make them bleed" philosophy and the next time these two teams play I expect a similar close physical game. Then to top it off Selanne and Getzlav score just a minute apart late in the game to make things really interesting, Jigair really needs to step up more though. The defense in front of him is elite, he is elite, but the blue line and the netminder have to work together EVERY time the puck gets in the zone. For a first game this is acceptable, but if this team continues to allow four goals per game they aren't going anywhere and Coach Oglethorpe will probably be inclined to bust some heads...literally."

"Do you think Bane Blackheart will be suspended after smashing the glass of the penalty box and showering two rows of fans with the resulting shrapnel in order to punch that peanut vendor who he claims looked at him the wrong way?"

"Expect a call from the Imperial Embassy if that happens. The peanut vendor should have been more careful."

Thirty minutes before the puck was scheduled to drop in Kynythin, Matt Peterson was nowhere to be found.

Coach Mark Browers tried Peterson's mobile. Nothing. He tried calling the hotel.

"Sorry, sir, there's no one here by that name," the confused-sounding clerk said into the telephone.

"Check the manifest," Browers said, impatience building with every word he all but spat out.

"The wha?"

"Let me speak to your manager."

"I'm sorry sir, she's unavailable."

"Bullshit."

Finally, left wing Sylvan Turcotte got the idea to call the airport.

"Customs."

"I'm looking for Matt Peterson," Turcotte said.

"Matt ... Peterson?"

"Yes. He's on the Sarzonian national hockey team."

"Oh." Turcotte then heard some muffled sounds that seemed to be whispers. After what seemed like hours, but was only a few brief moments later, the agent returned to the phone.

"My apologies, sir. It appears we had someone who wasn't well versed in Sarzonian documents who detained Mr. Peterson," the agent said. We've called over our supervisor and she's just verified his identity with the information we had on file for him last year."

"What?" Turcotte said with no lack of annoyance in his voice. "Can you put him on the phone?"

"I'm afraid not," the agent said. "We just sent him to the rink with his gear. We gave him hi... oh fuck!"

"Excuse me?"

"We forgot to give him his mobile phone. Our sincere apologies, sir."

By that time, Kieran Barker made the unexpected start in goal against Euroslavia. For a man who had very little skating time, he did an admirable job, turning aside 35 of the 37 shots he faced. However, Sarzonia were only able to get a goal from Mark Ridley in the second period to cut their deficit in half.

Thus, Sarzonia lost a match they otherwise would have no business losing. And Peterson had some explaining to do as far as the media were concerned.

"My father was just in hospital," Peterson said. "He had triple bypass surgery. I was only able to get to Kynythin today."

As for the row involving his papers?

"Someone couldn't access the database on Sarzonian players," he said. "I find that hard to believe, but whatever."

When asked why he found it hard to believe, Peterson said, "I played here last time out. They hosted this the last time. I can't believe for a minute they wouldn't know who I am."

Either way, Sarzonia will have to rebound fast. For Ridley, the offence being limited to 17 shots on goal was telling.

"They fired 37 shots on us to our 17," he said. "They skated circles around us. We can't let that happen again."
