A roster thread, if any -- many times smaller tournaments don't even do a separate roster thread -- is created by the eventual host. Which reminds me, we need someone well-established in NS Sports to conduct the balloting for the host given that there are two bids. Anyone want to stick up their hand?

Thank you for volunteering.

It would be best if we moved fairly quickly, as the conditions of bid will need revision if the selection goes long (48 hours before first scorination in my bid, for example, is Sunday morning).

Alrighty then, please send your votes to my puppet, Frecmenta, by Noon, Central US time, Sunday, December 28th. That's approximately 73 hours from now. Only nations who have signed up are eligible to vote. No puppets either. I'll announce the results as soon as I get home from church, so hopefully around 1pm.

Unfortunately, I have to work at 1pm on Sunday, and I doubt I'll have time to log on between church and work, so I'm bringing the deadline forwards to 10pm Saturday night. That's 25 hours from now.

For what it's worth, I've decided that community football is the default code in Nouvelle-Angouleme--that is, when an Angoulemois says "football", she means community football the way an American means American football or an Irishman means gaelic football. With that in mind, as you're formulating your rosters, if you'd like some of your players to have professional experience abroad, feel free to take a look at my factbook and place some of them on teams from the Eredivisie or the Topklasse, and I promise I'll take them into account when/if I scorinate those leagues. Both leagues are fully professional, and the Eredivisie is the premier sports league of any kind in Nouvelle-Angouleme.

The schedule for the Community Football World Championship, played for the Galactic Plate, is now posted. The scorination of the first qualifying round will be in just over 48 hours. To maximize your chances you are strongly encouraged to post your team roster before that scorination.

Bring on the RP! Good luck to all.

Nouvelle-Angouleme National Football Team: The Half-Moons
Community football is the national pastime of Nouvelle-Angouleme, ever since the nation arrived in Rushmore and the first broadcast to reach its shores was, implausibly, a replay of the match between Scott City University and Killbarrack FC in the first Community Football Convocation. Believing that community football was the dominant code of the new world into which they were thrown, the Angoulemois adopted it as their preferred code, and it quickly became symbolic of the new multiverse into which they had been thrown.

The Angoulemois game has very few fixed positions. The apex, also known as the jumper or the center, jumps for the ball at the start of the game, and otherwise fights for position at the point on the field also known as the apex, which is the spot in the inner circle closest to the goal, and therefore the best place to score points from. An offensively-mind apex is his or her team's primary scorer, drilling ball after ball through the posts for three points each, while a defensively-minded apex denies the other team the close three-point kicks.

The backs, also known as the lifters, are primarily defensive players who hang back and guard against three-point kicks while also leading the transition should the ball change hands. Offensively-minded backs are rare, but typically score three-pointers, either in transition or when the ball is passed back to them by a forward under pressure. Defensively-minded backs deny three-point shots and lead the transition when the ball changes hands, crashing the goal to avoid a quick score. Collective, the apex and the backs form the back three.

The forwards are tall players who play close to the goal and are primarily responsible for scoring points by throwing the ball through the goal, recovering kicks that fall short, and denying the other team the opportunity to do the same. Offensively forwards are focused on catching the ball deep in their opponent's territory and lofting it through the goals or else quickly tossing it back to the apex for a three-pointer. Defensively they are mostly concerned with dispossessing opposing forwards and then getting the ball into transition as quickly as possible.

The wingers are fast players with good hands and good passing ability. They are typically the lowest-scoring players on a team besides the backs, and they make their money in transition, offensively by getting the ball down the field and into the hands of a forward in time to score before the other team sets up its defense, and defensively by shutting the opposing offense down in transition. When the ball is at one end of the field or the other, the wingers' main goal is to provide an outlet for the forwards to pass out of trouble, or else break up those passes and get the ball into transition.

Typically, there are two backs and one apex, though this has been known to be challenged by progressive teams, but the number of wings and forwards is a matter of strategy. Two wings and four forwards (known as a two-and-four) is a typical setup, though a lone forward is not unheard of, and neither is a three-and-three.

Hello. The Waterandearthstan Community Football National Team is proudly presenting its best squad to compete for the Galactic Plate. The Community Football is a relatively new sport in Waterandearthstan and up to now it had been practised only at amateur level. Nevertheless, the State authorities not failing to notice the huge potentialities that the new game posed to the Wesians, decided to launch the first professional competition in our territory. Despite the fact that the first season of theWES Community Football First League is currently being played, the Federation could come up with a roster of 18 players from the top teams to defend the chances of the Wesian side. Kick-off day is very near and in the meantime the Federation has promptly placed an order for the official "Target" kits to Meski Sports, a widely recognised sportswear supplier.

Midtown, Nieuw Amsterdam, 0400, New Year's Day 1981

This whole place has gone to the dogs, thought Inspectour Thomas Janssen as he came up on the body of the young woman sprawled in the street, painted in stark whites and reds and blues by the encircling squad cars. It had taken most of the division to shut the block down, which meant more boots on his scene, more people mucking up the evidence, but at least they'd done a passable job of clearing out the civilian, not that there'd been many. Sure, half the city was still up carousing, but Midtown was pretty dead as far as the bar scene went, and everyone who wasn't drunk was already passed out in their own beds, not out wandering the streets.

Something had gone wrong last night, very wrong, as soon as the ball had dropped to call in the New Year. Thomas had been asleep at the time, but then his phone had rung and on his way to the crime scene he'd been hearing about it on the train. Something about the mainland going dark, no cars crossing the bridges, no lights on the other side, and no signals coming from out there either. Air-traffic control had lost contact with flights inbound from the American mainland, radio and TV broadcasts were snow, and whatever normally came in off the satellites was dead.

Still, none of that was relevant to his case, mostly because the young woman's sudden descent from a high floor of the Caribbean-Atlantic building had apparently preceded that of the ball downtown, so she had died before whatever happened, happened. Her corpse was hard to look at, even for a homicide detective, laid out spread-eagle on the pavement, her neck snapped upward at an unnatural angle, wrists conspicuously broken. There was blood, too, but Tom wasn't too concerned with that; on this particular corpse, he had a feeling that it was what was inside that counted.

He also had a feeling that the brass would want to write it off as a suicide, and that irked him. People who jumped did so to be public about their suicide, embarrass somebody, get revenge, call attention to something, and there was no way this woman would give up the perfect opportunity to end it all on national television if that were her game. The old cliche echoed in his head: she fell-or was she pushed? Maybe pushed, he thought, maybe fell by accident. Maybe a drunken escapade gone wrong. But not suicide.

The coroner's van arrived, and the uniforms scrambled to it in, parting like the Red Sea before returning to their posts to keep the looky-loos out. As the good doctor stepped out, it was hard to tell what was redder; her eyes, her face, or her hair. Wrapped in an oversized Army coat, she left the van running and moved briskly over to where the body had fallen.

"Hey you!" she called to Thomas, "Halloo! Has this body been moved?"

Thomas shrugged and walked over to talk to her. "I don't know," said Thomas, "I just got here. Assume it hasn't, and I'll go find out for sure."

The doctor nodded mutely and her bloodshot eyes met Thomas's for a moment. Both of them experienced a moment of confusion, and then she gave Thomas an impatient look and he walked past her toward the line of uniforms. A couple questions got him to the first on scene, who said he'd seen to it that nobody moved the body. That satisfied Thomas, and he returned to the red-haired doctor as she stooped over the body.

"Is the cause of death the fall?" he asked, trying not to sound like he thought it was a revelation.

"Not likely," said the lady doctor, and Thomas took a step back. He couldn't detect sarcasm in her voice, but then she was groggy and articulating poorly so he couldn't be sure she wasn't kidding.

"Come again?" he asked, leaning over to look in her in the face as she studied the body.

"I said, not likely," she repeated, an edge to her voice, "She's spread-eagled. People who fall go into the fetal position, unless they're not in control of their limbs at the time. So chances are she was dead when she went off the edge."

Thomas blinked; the theory held water, but he hadn't expected his gut to be right, at least not so soon. He wondered if it was going to be a trend this year, or if it was a one-time deal, some kind of karmic retribution for having to work on New Year's Eve. Whatever the case, he appreciated being right for once, and starting his year off on the right foot.

"It's fucking cold," she said, "Can some of these lugs get her into my van so we can get out of here?"

"Absolutely," said Thomas. He waved for the nearest uniforms to come over. "I'll see you at the morgue."

"Actually," said the doctor, "Could you drive? Because, honestly, I really shouldn't."

Checkmate at the Galactic Plate

Tom Hardy stared at the letter. He shook his head and read it once more.
“Jenna?”
“Yes, honey?”
“Have you heard what’s going on at the alma mater?”
“Besides the eternal fund drives? Noooo . . .”
“Well, this’ll take you back a few years.”
“I’m waiting, dear.”
“Dickinson College is going to host a world championship in community football.”
“Really? After all this time?”
“Sure enough. It’s spread to a lot of places, and now they’re doing the whole shebang. National teams and everything.”
“I remember when we played. We weren’t even sure what the rules were. But those were the days.”
“I remember Chase and Logan throwing you in the air and wishing that I was catching.”
“You caught me in the end, though.”
“I guess I did. But that’s not all, sweety. There’s a handwritten note in here from the Minister of Sport. At least if the note paper’s not lying.”
“And?”
“And let me quote: ’Tom and Jenna — Call me ASAP. TRM want a team for this. They think you’re the ones to lead it!’”

Managers: Tom Hardy and Jenna Partridge Hardy of Polgar City. The Hardys both played for the Dickinson College nine at the inaugural Community Football Convocation. Their daughter Corinne is the starting centre for the Checkmate squad.

Nickname: Knights.

Colors: Black and white.

Scheme: The Knights play a 2-2-3-2 style with deep and off forwards, left and right flanks out near the rim, left and right halves who double as lifters in neutral starts, a small centre with cheerleading experience who gets tossed by the lifters for extra height, and a three-quarter and fullback in the rear. Until the first goal is scored the off and three-quarter swap places so one forward is at each end. After the attacking and defending ends are determined the correct pairings are restored and the flanks switch if needed.

RP Permissions: No red cards or injuries greater than a minor knock without pre-clearance from me. Anything else goes including the rare godmod.

Notes (OOC)

The Free Land of Slave State is a nation run by the Marxist-Leninist Rural Workers Revolutionary Change Party, a political party with an ideology reminiscent of the Khmer Rouge and Ingsoc. The nation was once a democracy, but after a bout of chronic hyperinflation that none of the mainstream parties were able to adequately address (they had deliberately caused the hyperinflation in order to pay off debts from a previous war), the people turned in their desperation to the Party. Once they were securely in power, the Party forced everybody to leave cities and outlawed the possession of books and/or technology by anybody other than inner Party members a capital offense. The people of the Free Land of Slave State now live in poverty, as subsistence farmers who are required to hand over their surplus to the Party, while the inner Party live in luxury, selling their nation's agricultural surplus on the international market and using the proceeds to purchase luxuries for themselves.

For their amusement, the Party decided to send some randomly selected slaves to compete in the Galactic Plate, coached by a Party member who became obsessed with watching unauthorized SanctusTube uploads of the Community Football Convocation and the ClearCola Classic. Every time they lose a match, every single player on the team will receive a lash for each point that they lost by. In the event that they, somehow, manage to win the tournament, every single player on the team will become a member of the inner Party. In the event that they do not win the tournament, they will return to their ordinary lives of freedom through slavery.

I give my opponents whatever RP permissions they would give to their opponents.

The official organ of the Waterandearthstan Community Football Federation (WCFF),
"Community Football Weekly Review" has published in its last issue a very
interesting interview with the Waterandearthstan
community football national squad manager, Peter Paul Commongrounds. In its central pages,
the veteran sportsman pays attention to explaining to the general public of WES the reasons
behind his choices for the team that will participate in the first Community Football
World Championship: The Galactic Plate.

Let´s have a look at the interview:

(COMMUNITY FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW): "Mister Commongrounds, practically all the Wesians
are enchanted with the so long expected kick-off day of the Galactic Plate.
It seems difficult to believe, if we take into account the lack of history of this sport...
its professional league is just in his first year of competition"

(PETER PAUL COMMONGROUNDS): "Well, first of all, I would like to thank the "Community Football
Weekly Review" for offering me an opportunity to bring this wonderful sport closer to
our citizens, especially to young practitioners, and I hope you don´t get upset if I make
a little correction to your previous mention of a "kick-off". Technically speaking, the
beginning of the game is not a kick at all, provided that the rules require the ball to
be thrown up in the air, where it will be disputed by one member of each team.
The rest of the story, as in many other team sports, goes around trying to outscore the
opponent by passing an oval ball through a goal similar in shape to the one in Rugby.

(CFWR): It sounds easy, mustn´t there be some particular tactics that predispose
the 9 players of each team to achieve this objective?

(PPC): That´s right. Of course, every trainer has a particular style that tries to impose
on his players, but in my experience a big bunch of colleagues use three inner circle players
surrounded by three -or five, depending on the offesive style- outer circle forwards, and three men
the back to guard their own goal area.

(CFWR): And what about our own tactics?

(PPC): I like to play with a somehow cautious style. Two outer circle forwards at the
sides -usually very fast people to face the goal as quick as possible- give support
to the central striker, normally the most accurate scorer of the team. Further back, inside
the inner circle, three men, two flankers whose main role is to distribute promptly any
balls recovered around their area, and in certain situations also to add up numbers to the offensive
line. At the back, two wing defenders -strong and very agile men, preferably- to be capable
of stopping incursions from the flanks, and of halting any attempt to score by kicking from the sides.
Finally, our team uses a sweeper as the final defence option. This player may also act as an initiator of possible
attacks from the deep field. In the National Team, for example, our man is William Sánchez,
a very skilled master kicking the ball through the three posts.

Editor´s note: in the graphic you can appreciate the main areas where players execute
their movements

RP guidelines: first of all, obviously, don´t kill anyone; don´t seriously injure any player and,
as a general rule, everything that my opponents allow me to do, I won´t prevent them from doing

Community Football isn't the number one sport in Sheffland, it's behind Association Football and American Football, but it does have its own league full of mainly domestic players. The current champions of this league is Richmond CFC, and the strategy of this team is normally the same as the national team of Sheffland.

The sweeper looks to get the ball either off the opposition of from the full back, and makes long kicks/throws away from the goal. A good sweeper will normally aim towards the inner ring or the attackers. This is the position that a goalkeeper in association football or a punter from American football would play, so the physicality of the player isn't important, however the kicks must be good.

The full backs are by far the strongest and most aggressive on the team. Their jobs are to prevent any shots on goal, by either ripping the ball from the hands of the attacking player or claiming long distributions from the opposition. 29 year old Josh Talbot, Sheffland's second choice full back has had two criminal convictions for attempted robbery and assault, but has apparently rehabilitated.

The defensive centre will win the ball back, take it into the rings, and take off long kicks. They are usually the highest points scorers on the team. The defensive centre for Sheffland, the 17 year old Joe Gray, is the best domestic player in the Sheffland Premier League, and the top scorer in his first season.

The centres play in both defence and attack, and therefore require brilliant stamina. They're job is to assist the attacking players and create goalscoring opportunities for them. They normally stand around the outer ring.

The wings look to spread play out wide, and are generally the fastest on the team. They will get the ball and run forward at pace, and playing the ball to the attackers.

The attacker is at the end of attacking moves. This is the position of backs in rugby union. Attackers normally catch the ball from the wings and centres. They are normally tall and physically strong to stop defensive players, however they still require good pace.

While most clubs in Sheffland would normally focus on getting the ball forward, Sheffland looks to utilise Joe Gray at defensive centre, who will easily claim Sheffland many points against any opposition.

Modern Fables III - The alligator under the bed and Crocodile tears

This story happened in a small town in Redínxson, by 1970, and, it may seem a fable, actually happened. Tonic Aroeira was kind of makes everything a small football team in the region. It was wardrobe, masseuse, janitor, cook and not only entered the field to kick the ball because rheumatism and fallen stickleback not left.
A certain summer morning, Tonic ran out of the small room where the team's uniforms were stored before a workout, terrified, saying he had seen an alligator. The laughter was general. No one believed the poor Tonic and everyone thought he was suffering the effects of strong heat. He was sent to the club doctor, who also disbelief in the history of alligator, gave a soothing to the wardrobe and recommended rest and plenty of fluids.
The thing is, Tonic saw this alligator almost every day, with or without heat. And every dread cry was sent again to the doctor. The dosage of the soothing grew stronger and, over time, people distrusted the poor man's sanity. Still, he kept swearing by all the saints who had even an alligator in the wardrobe team, even if no one else had seen the terrifying beast.
The Tonic Aroeira doctor visits became daily, until one day, without explanation, the wardrobe was not the office. After three weeks, the doctor decided to seek the team coach for news of Tonic, and if he had finally cured of hallucinations.

- The Tonic, doctor? Do you remember the alligator he so spoke?

- Of course. For I have come to know if he ever stop with these stories.

- Stopped, ‘uai’. Because you believe that even had an alligator in the wardrobe of the club?

- No kidding. But what happened?

- The Tonic killed the animal with a fish knife. He took the leather, made a ball and 11 pairs of boot, we was really needed. With meat, the darn even made a neat great barbecue. It was delicious!

When a crocodile devours prey, their lacrimal glands are pressed so that he cries while feeding. Hence the 'crocodile tears' expression, known to all and used in various languages, worldwide.
Love is being trivialized, in every corner. Everywhere, people say that they love each other and exchange eternal vows, without hardly knowing right. In the then social networks ... The word 'friend' is one more than was common. Just a small touch pro subject find that is already the best friend the other.
Human relationships are becoming more superficial, and with that, artificial and false. Labels and appearances gain more importance than the actual content, and pretend ends up being more functional than actually act.
In football is no different, as the sport reflects what is happening in society, especially the downside. Today it is difficult to believe that a fan or a player manager says, as the maximum in which 'there is no truth that lasts 24 hours on the football' is becoming more and more frequent.
Leader promises not to sell so and that will never hire ciclano. Player kisses shell and ensures it will never play at rival. Director ensures transparent, without embezzlement. Player cries when he leaves, vowing eternal love to the club.
Many people still believe in them. I do not. I do not know if I'm skeptical or discouraged by the trivialization of all feelings, but I do not cheat more.
