Dementia targets newest memories first. She's more likely to forget that Apple Bloom is her granddaughter than she is to forget her childhood. Plus, that doesn't address the fact that the entire episode depends on Granny Smith being right. her being wrong wholly and completely undermines the episode and its message. She necessarily must be right.

Ahh, well I just don't like the idea of the smartest Unicorn (in Season 1) being wrong. I mean c'mon, it's Twilight freaking Sparkle. You honestly think she'd make a mistake like that?

Yes. Unless the world's in danger, she's never really seemed to do well under stress, and in that case she was under stress and the world wasn't in danger.

Actually, the scene in question happened BEFORE she fucked things up. Like at the very beginning of the episode.
Twilight Sparkle: Spike, the first day of spring is tomorrow, so every pony in Ponyville needs to clean up winter. Now help me get ready.
Spike: Clean up winter? Who cleans up winter? Don't they just use magic to change the seasons like they do in Canterlot?
Twilight Sparkle: No Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter. It's traditional. [sigh]
Spike: It's ridiculous. No magic... Fuh.

True, but the early part of the episode made it clear that she was already nervous, since it was her first Ponyville Wrap-Up.

...eyewitnesses reported something of a confrontation after the accident, but by the time police arrived only an unattended car remained. Police have currently impounded the Everfree Deluxe Six Roadster, but considering the vehicle's inspection is long-expired and the impound fees are greater than the car's value, they do not have high hopes of resolving the matter anytime soon. In national news, President Easyglider made a televised statement regarding the 'Penchenya' artificial satellite launched by the Earth Pony Republic yesterday, claiming that the launch did not come as a surprise, and that Equestrian developments in space travel are already working on reaching and surpassing the standards set by this EPPR achievement. This is DJ Vinyl Scratch for PEPP. Don't touch that dial!

"Those who reached my boundary, their seed is not; their hearts and their souls are finished forever and ever. As for those who had assembled before them on the sea, the full flame was their front before the harbour mouths, and a wall of metal upon the shore surrounded them. They were dragged, overturned, and laid low upon the beach; slain and made heaps from stern to bow of their galleys, while all their things were cast upon the water." - Ramesses III., Battle of the Delta

49 seconds. There's no way I'm going to sit through more than one cycle of that melody.
