At 9:14 am on the morning of February 12th, 2013, one of the 40 central core elevators was caught between the fortieth and forty-first floors. Due to the violent shaking of the elevator, technicians immediately severed power to the stuck elevator and all surrounding it.
Within moments of arriving, the fire department was alerted that a bomb had been placed near the elevator and would explode within 76 hours if the individual responsible for it was not killed within the allotted time. Due to the decision by technicians to cut power to the central core, law enforcement was unable to reach the stranded individuals.
