Application

Nation Name: The Kingdom of Aileach
Population: 175,000
Capital City: Bhun Cranncha

Government: Aileach is a Kingdom much unlike any other in Europe. Rather than passing the office and title of King on a hereditary basis, the King is elected from and by the twelve clans. The twelve clans are the twelve largest families which hold authority over their own administrative districts. All twelve of the clans can trace their lineage to the original Uí Néill dynasty, stemming from Niall Noígíallach.
The current King is Adgar Mac Domnaill, who has reigned for seventeen years since the death of Mael Mac Lochlainn.

Technology: Being on the outskirts of not just the continent but the known world have certainly led to Aileach to being pretty much a backwater. It lags slightly behind the likes of England and Scotland.

Economy: Agriculture and local trade make up the economy of the Kingdom. Sheep and sheep derived products are the backbone of Aileach and will most likely be what the Kingdom brings to the table on international trade. The Kingdom does mint its own coin, a triangular pennyweight cut of silver, most trade however does still take place in the form of bartering.

The largest exports of the country are textiles, sheep, fish, cattle, barley, rye and other similar foodstuffs. Exports of lesser importance would be silver, jewelry and ornaments and pottery.

Military: The military of Aileach is based again on the clan system, with each family having their own retinue of fighting men and ships. The wealthier families can afford to clad their noble troops and their mounts in plate and mail, while the others are left with mail and studded, boiled or padded leather. Warfare in Ireland is based around slave and cattle raiding, and the soldiers of the land reflect that, with incredibly fast infantry known as kerns. They arm themselves with a number of throwing darts (javelins) and a melee weapon with the favourites being short axes and spears. Some will also carry a small target shield though they all go unarmoured for mobility. Heavy infantry comes in the form of the Galloglas, warriors armed with longswords and heavy armour. They fill the need for strong, aristocratic infantry that the levies cannot supply.

History: For the last century, Aileach has existed more-or-less within its current borders. It largely stays aside from European affairs, sue to its size and isolation, though it does trade with continental peoples. It has been at war with England for some time now, and sporadic conflicts occur between the other resident Kingdoms of Connacht and Munster on the island.

In 1101 the ringfort known as 'An Grianan', a site sacred to the Kingdom where Kings are elected and crowned, was stormed and partially destroyed by a Munster army. It was rebuilt in 1145, with walls an extra two meters high and a larger enclosed ring.

What is this talk of Denmark, Poland, and Bohemia getting together?

I'm thinking of creating a flag for Mosul (couldn't find anything on that matter, not even an emblem or weapon or so), any ideas?

Sure. The Mongols were big; I've RPed them enough times to know precisely why. But at the end of the day, the hordes that invaded Europe were really no more than steppe nomads, just more organized and numerous than Europe was used to seeing. They didn't have brilliant military commanders, nor climate factors in their favor once they hit Russia. I hope, by unifying the Rus' again, to outlast them.

Mmm, their innovation was quite something to behold. They went form nothing to experts in siege warfare, for example, in less than a generation.

There are two as far as i know, one is that it came to Europe through the silkroad, the other one is that it was brought to Europe by the Mongols.
Now for me this is important since if it would come through the silkroad i would be the first to get my hands on them and all, and that way i could use them (or an improved version) to defend myself against the Mongols.

• Heavy Dromonds @ 250 rowers X 19 ships @ 4750 rowers
o 2 more under construction
• Heavy galleys @ 350 rowers X 4 ships @ 1400 rowers
Byzantine Army- 25,000 Infantry and 20,000 Cavalry
Tagma- 5 Chiliarchiai
Chiliarchiai-1,000 Infantry
• 650 Skutatoi – Heavy Infantry with 2.5 meter spear, long and short sword, and shield
• 350 Toxotai – Light Infantry with composite bow, slightly lighter armor, short sword
Each Chiliarchiai was roughly 20 ranks deep, with the first 15 being Skutatoi and the last five Toxotai.
There were Tagmas in the Empire right now. They are based in Thrace, Greece, Byzantium, Anatolia, and Trebizond. They are named according to location, IE Thracian Tagma, Anatolian Tagma. There were also 5 reserve/militia Tagma in the same locations, but those troops are less reliable and poorly equipped.

• Cataphracts – Heavy Armored Lancer/Archer
• Psiloi – Light Archers and Scouts
There are 40 Cataphract Numerusi and 10 Psiloi Numerusi. Each Tagma of Infantry also had 10 Numeros, 8 Cataphract and 2 Psiloi.

Mercenaries-None currently, though the Empire does often hire light infantry, Vargarians, and Light cavalry.

I'm not sure about your naval numbers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_navy seems to suggest you'd scarcely have 25.

Anyway, so is it ok for me to ignore Reatra's post for now? I really have no idea what on earth it's doing, but I'd like to get into the IC, and Reatra hasn't really been around to explain.

So, could I go ahead and post without taking note of whatever Reatra is doing in Corsica-Sardinia until it gets fixed?

Surely I can make a quick buck raiding some coastal town while the English army is otherwise occupied... consider the Vikings Denmark in on it as well.

I believe its almost a reality right now. I'll offer to ally with Aileach in my next post and Denmark wants to do a little raiding along the English east coast-though that's probably the limit of his participation.

It's a plot of mine. Bohemia will attempt to establish relations with Denmark and Poland, mostly through marital agreements. The alliance with Poland is something that Ottokar has been contemplating of late, and I hope to set it in motion tomorrow. Meanwhile, Vratislav will eventually try to make the historical marriage between Valdemar and Margaret of Bohemia happen, probably by earning the king's friendship and whatnot.

True. Otto IV, the current emperor, had his power base in Saxony, meaning that it would make more sense for the Saxon role-player to control Otto. Nonetheless, his brother, a rival claimant to the Roman throne, Philip of Swabia, controlled Swabia, a region in south-western Germany and had substantial support from Bavaria as well. At the moment, he's losing the civil war.

I would recommend assuming the role of Philip all the same, though, since his personage is quite pivotal to political developments in 1202. Furthermore, he still has several opportunities to change the tide of the war. Despite the enmity of the Papacy, Philip can still request support from his French allies, who have been dithering until now, more concerned with the Angevin presence on the continent. Furthermore, some of the Italian states might serve as interlopers as well.
