What about a Civil War-era American?

I find that period fascinating, and seeing someone from that long ago try to deal with modern and futuristic stuff would be interesting. At the same time, they'd probably be more able to cope than someone from, say, 500 years ago. The Civil War was around the time that the Theory of Evolution and the Industrial Revolution entered the world. It was a taste of modern warfare at the dawn of the modern age.

It depends; there would obviously be huge moral discrepancies that would need to be addressed, not to mention the absolute shitload of PTSD to work through.

It would be difficulty, and not really something we'd want to bog the show down in.

Martha seems to be somewhat unpopular, and I can guess why. She replaced Rose.

Personally, though, I like her. She's my favourite companion (it was Rory, but season seven sucked so badly).

The different morals are part of what makes it interesting. Of course, how big the differences are depends on who the companion is. If they're a slave owner, for example, its going to be more of an issue.

As for PTSD, they've done companions who were soldiers before.

See, and that all sounds fine, but it's pretty heavy stuff to be attacking - it would distract from other things going on in the show.

Its nice to have some serious episodes. In fact, my favourite episodes tend to be pretty serious. Like Genesis of the Daleks and Waters of Mars.

Its good if a show has a mix of different things.

But right now the main arc, if there is one, should probably be about finding Gallifrey. On the other hand, I'd like to not have a big arc for a while. Moffat's arcs suck and stuff gets tied into the arcs in a contrived way.
