Challenger 2 Life Extension Program update (from Janes IHS)

-227 Challenger 2 MBTs upgraded to a common standard.
-Service date of 2020, which should extend the tanks life to 2035.

The LEP is 'expected' to replace the:
-Thermal imaging
-Gun control equipment
-Fire control system
-Information systems

It is also 'expected' to:
-Add cameras for more situational awareness.
-Provide new types of 120mm ammo (I'm not sure what they mean by this)

Better charges for extra "penetration", if you know what I mean.

MBT-1980
Image
Production:
Designer: Heicliffean National Heavy Industry Bureau
Designed: 1974 - 1980
Manufacturers:
- Kaufmann Steelworks Inc.
- Gregory Motors Company
- Kalypso Heavy Machinery Corp.
Produced: 1980 - Present
Number Built: 955
Specifications:
Weight: 55 Tonnes
Crew: 4
Armour: 25 - 950mm Ferro-Ceramic Composite Armour, ERA and Slat Armour
Main Armament: TG5-MK3 120mm Smoothbore Cannon
Secondary Armament: VHMG 12.7mm Coaxial Gun
Engine: GM-1600V12 V-12 Liquid Cooled Twin Turbo Diesel Engine 1600 hp
Power/Weight: 29.1 hp/tonne
Operational Range: 470km
Following modernization trials in the mid 70's, the MBT-1980 was the result of six years of design work on the part of the National Heavy Industry Bureau (NHIB). Initially scoffed by Army Command due to the lack of prior military design experience on the part of the NHIB, the MBT-1980 (XT-5 during trials) was not the fastest, strongest, or most durable tank during trials but the best blend of all requirements. Built around the reputation of the Gregory Motors Corporation to provide a reliable, powerful, and simple diesel engine, an ongoing joke is that the engine will be the last thing to fail in an operational tank. After successfully completing Army trials, the XT-5 became the MBT-1980, and production began immediately to replace the aging and barely capable MBT-1950 force. ERA and Slat armour are available as kits to complement the composite layered armour against both HEAT and KEP style weapons.

Statblock/writeup. Thank you Erusuia for providing a framework for me to work in, although it looks like wikipedia was also an acceptable place to get that from. :p

Entered service in '74? That thing needs a proper camouflage pattern. Hell, a single-tone tank would work better than that.

And I find it really hard to believe any sort of a 1600hp diesel engine could be reasonably produced in '74, unless you turbocharge the crap out of it (which is far from ideal for a tank) they way engineers did in WWII on most aircraft.

Obviously, it's your choice but if you're looking for something more reasonable...

It could definitely be produced in 1974. It wouldn't be as compact or efficient as such a powerplant today, but if the designers were willing to put aside a larger space, it could easily be done.

TIL initial design year is same as service year. The test engines were indeed less powerful, but I'd like to think an engine of that power could be made in 1979 - 1980.

Camo is subjective, this is just 'standard mountain beige' + various colored ERA packs. I can color the damn thing whatever I please.

I said reasonable.

It would be a massive engine if it was naturally aspirated and produced 1600 horses in '74-'80.

It's fine as a justification. People are on this site to have fun and often that means doing unrealistic things for no other reason than they enjoy it. It may not be a very good reason to come into the realism thread and blow off all of the realism advice, but that's an entirely separate matter.

Who the fuck said we need to be realistic?

The only reason I criticized your tank was because most people in this particular series of threads care about realism.

"In the end it is NS" is never an excuse. How many of the site's denizens have used that pretext for their idiotic mechs?

It is perfectly acceptable.

Mecha is one of my favorite fandoms, and if you think mecha sucks then you're either in denial or just not interested in sci-fi at all.

I can't say I think it sucks. What I can say, though, is that I think it sucks in a realistic setting. In fact, it is horrendous as a realistic fighting vehicle.

The only thing is that my opinion them is somewhat shifted here because it's a thread de-facto centered on realism.
