I really don't think it matters... generally, I prefer the good old patrilineal surname system just because it makes it easier to trace relatives, but in the end it's completely up to the couple.

I'm willing to bet it was either Silver, Platinum or Palladium.

Of course, if your parents went to college or had a strong interest in chemistry they probably also knew about Rhodium, Iridium and Osmium.

"Double-barrelling" and a matrilineal system achieves the same thing if applied consistently.

Actually I would want someting like Hispanic method.

Father: Jack Wilson (paternal) Gallagher (maternal)
Mother: Lisa Goldstein (paternal) Dubois (maternal)

Child: Anita Wilson (paternal paternal) Dubois (maternal maternal)

And surname must not be changed in case of marriage unless the person wants to.

Mine is more like Anita Claire Dubois Wilson.

Both are nice and bold, but I like it this way more. I don't know, ladies first. :P

Though I wouldn't mind the Spanish system where it'd be Anita Claire Wilson Dubois, because then I could write it as "Anita Claire W. Dubois", what is important because the mother's surname is closer to my identity, and I can't do it in the Portuguese system because we shouldn't omit the last name in most occasions (specially so when it is preceded by "de").

I kept mine, he kept his.

I considered that meshing them could result in something cool (there are a lot of shared letters between our surnames), but we're both pretty lazy so...

We'll basically be doing coin flips on the children's names: boys get his, girls get mine. It'll be sweet.
