Recap on Season 20
After Spartangrad just about outdid Falourr in the Charity Shield, Ulsa dominated the league just like last season. However this time there would be no late title charge from another team as Ulsa made up for the last near miss with a decisive title win. The performances of a revitalised Chris Waller, of their midfield in general and particularly of Craig Sinclair and Michael Tello transformed their title challenge into a comfortable canter, with Tello winning the Golden Boot with 28 goals. Directus finished seven points off the pace in second, meaning no silverware for Michael Robertson in his last season, but they played well throughout and Maas Fox had another superb season. However they suffered from lacking a striker as potent as Tello, as Ildar Patrelyak seems to have passed his peak, though he still managed to score 14 league goals. Revolutionaries and Spartangrad both fell short too, but made the Champions Cup places.
Holdenberg and Bastion both had to settle for Globe Cup places, though the latter managed to also win the National Cup as their revival continues, beating Spartangrad 3-2 thanks to an extra time goal from veteran Felix Saarinen. AFC Mayville surprised everyone by slipping into Globe Cup qualification thanks to the efforts of Charlie Brady and others. Brigham fell down the table a bit but still managed a convincing finish to their season as did Falourr and Oakstone, while Lajuno endured another mediocre finish in 11th. The bottom half was quite congested but likely relegation candidates Marketville and Whitepill managed to avoid relegation, at the expense of Suttonville, Thagarnia, and Holdenberg City, who will be frustrated to have finished bottom. Hornchurch avoided being dragged in almost solely thanks to the efforts of Michael Simpson, the young Euran striker who enjoyed his breakthrough season, scoring 19 top flight goals.
AFC MAYVILLE
Manager: Nicky Moore (54, Eura)
Stadium: Langham Stadium (Mayville, 44,000)
Key Players: Reece Coleman, Olman Reedwater, Joey Walton, Matt Edding, Tim Curren, Anders Kleppner, Harry Higgins, Jude Yates, Ethan Dixon, Jay Goodwin, Miles MacDonald.
In: Jay Goodwin (25, ST, Eura) from Holdenberg City for £3.5m.
Out: Charlie Brady (30, ST, Eura) to Pradera FC (Valladares) for £18m.
AFC Mayville might have lost their star player, but they’ll be laughing their way to the bank. After a superb season secured them an unexpected Globe Cup qualifying spot, they’ve managed to keep their squad intact with almost the same side that kept them up only four seasons ago. The major loss to them is their superb late blooming striker Charlie Brady, who they’ve managed to get £18m for at age 30. They’ve got another good striker in Miles MacDonald, and now have brought in a replacement for Brady, Jay Goodwin, for a fraction of what Brady was sold for. There should be little doubt that Brady is an exceptional player and a big loss, but unless their goalscoring tally drops massively then Nicky Moore has done good business.
BASTION
Manager: John Greaves (44, Eura)
Stadium: Bastion Arena (Bastion, 110,000)
Key Players: Tyler Coleman, Robert Morgan, Isner, Dennis Munro, Rhys West, Andima Etchaleku
Gaizka Omaexevarria, Will Andrews, Alan Dabix, Eye Barsa, Miroslav Janda, John Mallard, Julius Carrera, Felix Saarinen.
In: Gaizka Omaexevarria (22, CB/CDM, Audioslavia) from Cazadores Cathair (Audioslavia) for £18m.
Out: N/A
Since he took over as Bastion boss full time, John Greaves has overseen a steady and solid revival for Bastion which now has them as at least Champions Cup contenders, with a decent squad. That squad has been overhauled over the course of four years, and the patience of the Bastion ownership and fans has paid off it seems as the once unfancied Greaves takes his side to new heights. Felix Saarinen now may be 36 and an impact sub, but the now secure front line of John Mallard and Julius Carrera is a potent one, even if Bastion were disappointed not to resign their former star man Skorji Oslograd. Their foreign back line of the two Syndicatians who were once considered a joke and the unlikely centreback pairing of Murno and Isner has finally bore fruit, looking relatively stable last season.
Yet the midfield has remained a constant area of worry, though now they appear to have solved it. Miroslav Janda may not be a long term prospect at left wing but Andima Etchaleku continues to defy the collapse of Iturributan football and perform well, while the midfield two of the superb Sameban Alan Dabix and young Euran defensive midfielder Will Andrews impressed last season. With Eye Barsa on the verge of retirement, they have decided to strengthen both their midfield and defence with the signing of Audioslavian prodigy Gaizka Omaexevarria. The 22 year old can play both defensive midfield and centreback, and will likely spend his first season competing with both Andrews and Munro. Anything less than Globe Cup qualification this season will be seen as regression, but winning the title is not a condition on which the manager’s job depends. His extra-time capture of the National Cup last season has satiated the need for silverware.
BRIGHAM
Manager: Danny Granger (45, Eura)
Stadium: Old Ham Lane (Brigham, 76,409)
Key Players: Mason Blake, Jake Mayer, Michael Adell, David Smith, Alfie Birch, Thomas Kay, Hakan Abt, Karl Cotrell, Wolcjeck Gruber, Danny Sullivan, James Brecon.
In: N/A
Out: N/A
All is quiet on the Brigham front. Despite finishing agonisingly short of Globe Cup qualification, Brigham have failed to invest further in their squad, though Danny Granger hasn’t left which gives the impression he’s content with his squad. He hasn’t lost anyone at least. The performances of David Smith of Sicoutimont, Karl Kotrell, Wolcjeck Gruber, Danny Sullivan and former Revolutionaries frontman James Brecon will all have to improve slightly for them to push themselves into UICA qualification.
DIRECTUS
Manager: Tom Benedict (50, Eura)
Stadium: Castle Road (Directus, 95,000)
Key Players: Carl Brommis, Fabio Quella, Craig Gilbert, Derek Millson, Andrew Watson, Spencer Greenwood, Olle Pranich, Michael Brandon, Glenn Anderson, Stanislav Navratil, Maas Fox, Ildar Patrelyak, Lucas Valdez, Felipe Ebenezer
In: Lucas Valdez (23, AM/ST, Valladares) from Nacional (Valladares) for £21m, Olle Pranich (21, RW, Semarland) from Krsthaven (Semarland) for £4.5m plus a player, Felipe Ebenezer (19, ST, Northern Sunrise Islands) from Porto Alegre State University (NSI) for free.
Out: Michael Robertson (37, CB, Eura) retired, Isaac Holt (18, CM/RM, Eura) to Krsthaven on a season long loan.
Tom Benedict’s gradual turnover of the Directus has been ongoing for nearly five seasons, and yet during that time they have consistently challenged for and won silverware. Benedict’s continued achievement has made him a favourite for the Eura job, though given the significance of one of his summer signings he doesn’t plan on going anywhere. His defence is sorted, despite the retirement of Euran great Michael Robertson. His midfield is nothing to scoff at; the consistent Glenn Anderson and the arguably world class Sideburnese captain Michael Brandon make up the middle, with wonderkid Maas Fox tearing apart defenders in attacking midfield. On the left Navratil might be past his peak but is still a formidable player, while Spencer Greenwood has held his own at this level on the right, and will now be pushed to perform even better by new signing Olle Pranich.
However, what Directus have been lacking is a consistent striker as in the past few seasons Ildar Patrelyak’s form and temperament have fluctuated. Last season he scored a fairly mediocre 14 league goals. To solve this they spent big on another striker from Valladares, which seems to be all the rage at the moment, to counter compatriot and Ulsa striker Michael Tello. Directus opted for Nacional striker and attacking midfielder Lucas Valdez, the 23 year old costing them £21m – the most expensive transfer of an unusually quiet transfer window. They’ve also brought in 19 year old striker Felipe Ebenezer, a long term competitor or possibly strike partner, secured on a free transfer from Porto Alegre State University in his native Northern Sunrise Islands. Now anything less than a title challenge will be a failure for Directus.
FALOURR
Manager: Reggie Yarmouth (43, Eura)
Stadium: Sandstone Ground (60,000)
Key Players: Tony Grant, Buck Manning, Manuele Provenza, Levi Andetel, Anthony Cotra, Charles Hunter, John Lloyd, Luke Mistry, Toby Hayes, Robin Tykeman, Sean Hayward.
In: Manuele Provenza (29, CB, Felix) from Altomare (Felix) for £8m.
Out: Matt Maher (33, CB, Eura) to Usmer for £900k.
The only transfer activity of the summer for Falourr was replacing the journeyman defender Matt Maher, who you now feel is at the end of his run in football. They’ve taken a risk by replacing him with Manuele Provenza, a Felixian international player unproven at this sort of level and already 29, for as much as £8m. Rumour has it that the Felixian club had to actually be talked down from an astronomical fee. Time will tell whether this was a wise choice or not, and I suspect Falourr will be happy with a finish in the upper half of mid table.
FARRENTON ATHLETIC
Manager: Thomas Mann (45, Eura)
Stadium: Pignot Stadium (Farrenton, 70,000)
Key Players: Ryan Jones, Adam Walsh, Hayden Fisher, Moe Spencer, Jonathan Bishop, Scott Barnes, Josh Caig, Fraser Vaughan, Eugene Sabattini, Ben Robinson, Phil Gulliver
In: N/A
Out: N/A
Farrenton’s defence last season was aptly described by the premier local paper, the Gazette; “awful”, “gutless” and “failure”. Farrenton’s front line strength managed to be overwhelmed by an awful performance at the back last season. However Farrenton failed to improve over the summer, and if their wingers and strikers and captain Fraser Vaughan fail to perform, then they’ll be in serious trouble.
HARKDOWN
Manager: Ross Browning (50, Eura)
Stadium: OpTiiK Arena (Harkdown, 55,600)
Key Players:
In: Tom Frost (25, LB, Eura) from Suttonville for £5m.
Out: N/A
Ross Browning, former veteran Euraleague striker, is now at the helm in Harkdown and has earned them a return to the top flight. Keeping them there may be difficult however. They have a very thin squad which was not expected to achieve promotion last season, and Harkdown don’t have the money to bring in new players other than squad filler. In the unlikely event that they survive, they will surely have four players to thank; defenders Tom Frost, signed expensively from Suttonville, and Joe Newton, plus veteran midfielder and striker Hayden Roberts and Logan Sammon. They will do well to finish higher than anyone other than Foxhampton.
FOXHAMPTON
Manager: Sebastian Young (68, Eura)
Stadium: Hampton Court (Foxhampton, 28,000)
Key Players: David Pope, Darren Pritchard, Prisco Milanesi, Joel Ryan
In: N/A
Out: N/A
His name might be Young, but the Foxhampton boss certainly isn’t youthful. At 68 he admits he is near retirement, but the career defining achievement of this young journeyman is to get Foxhampton into the big time. They were non-league not long ago and now they have their chance to make a big mark on Euraleague, albeit it will likely be a brief mark, one defined by a number of thrashings. Still, they’ll hope that their few truly talented players, particularly highly rated striker Joel Ryan, can give them a few memorable victories.
HOLDENBERG
Manager: Simon Neeson (39, Eura)
Stadium: Benedict Lane (Holdenberg, 74,869)
Key Players: Dimitar Brandt-Caledon, Gary Prior, Aaron Brandley, Charlie Harris, Bradley Francis, Lee Myers, Alexey Tatarchuk, Roman Mayalla, Charlie Fuller, Pablo Dohi, Keith Rowland
In: N/A
Out: N/A
It’s a brand new season for Holdenberg, and after the retirement of their old manager, there is a new boss in town. Step up Simon Neeson, the former goalkeeper who retired from playing just two years ago and has been groomed for a coaching role for several years. Neeson faces a challenging season ahead as Holdenberg continue to fight the odds to make the top four. Holdenberg have a well balanced team with a superb young goalkeeper, a talented midfield, two brilliant forwards and a solid defence. They are in a good position to push on despite not adding any depth over the summer.
HONEYBADGERS
Manager: Luke Thomas (43, Eura)
Stadium: The Hive (Directus, 62,107)
Key Players: Rick Connors, Jeffrey Douglas, Alex Bashley, Ryan Collins, Dylan Kirby, Lee McKray, Joan Cruft, Andy Hope, Vince Padovesi, Brandon Short, Callum Howard, Dominik Davidenko, Michael Sarado
In: Andy Hope (27, CDM/CM, Eura) from Holdenberg City for £2.2m.
Out: Grant Townsend (33, CB, Eura) from Honeybadgers to Isla Town FC (Nova Anglicana) for £1.5m.
The slide of Honeybadgers from a once promising position has been very obvious, and their new boss Luke Thomas – incoming from being a free agent – will hope to arrest that slide. He’s got rid of the dead weight of Grant Townsend and has brought in depth in midfield in the form of Andy Hope. They’ll be hoping to move further up midtable this season, especially if their new youth graduate Dylan Kirby can come good at centre back.
HORNCHUCH
Manager: Gordon Mevitt (42, Eura)
Stadium: Walter Avenue (Hornchurch, 56,392)
Key Players: Kondrat Istomin, Tim Small, Stuart Albright, Bryan Butler, Asey Vella, Jeb Huddlestone, Chris Peters, Nigel Kersey, Giovanni Acuna, Noel Carpenter, Blake Carter, Liam Carling, Arnljótur Juran, Michael Simpson
In: Noel Carpenter (26, CM, Eura) from Thagarnia for £2.3m, Arnljótur Juran (27, ST, The Fallenmark Islands) from Marylebone Invicta (TFI) for £500k.
Out: N/A
Hornchurch have suffered for a few seasons from a mediocre back line, a midfield lacking talent apart from Fraser Vaughan who is now gone, and little investment. What they have had in that time however is a good front line of Liam Carling and Michael Simpson. However with their increasingly thin midfield and Carling getting old, they’ve been forced to move to prevent themselves becoming relegation candidates. They’ve brought in Noel Carpenter, a decent midfielder from Thagarnia but nothing special, and the first Fallenmark Islands player to play in Euraleague. Arnljótur Juran will likely want to become a long term replacement for Liam Carling, though it’s unlikely much will be expected from him, having come from such a small league.
LAJUNO
Manager: Fred Warner (50, Eura)
Stadium: Lansbury Road (Lajuno, 62,000)
Key Players: Roman Ayebler, Tomas Svensen, Alan Fotheringham, Declan Hosking, Thiago Fuchs, Christian Sanchez, Brendan Crawford, Conor Thompson, Joe Robel, Joel Sutton, Jordan Jarvis
In: N/A
Out: Richard Lockhart (35, LAM, Eura) retired.
There was a moment of sadness for Lajuno in the summer as Richard Lockhart retired, but perhaps they should realise now that they’ve got bigger worries. Despite having what is on paper one of the best starting elevens outside of the big teams, they could only manage a paltry 11th last season and it appears the wind has finally been taken out of their sales. Although they have a very good goalkeeper their two rocks at centre back are near retirement, Thiago Fuchs is a mediocre leftback and Thomas Svensen has never fulfilled his potential. Their midfield is similarly hit and miss, though Joe Robel continues to defy his international critics with his domestic performances, and Joel Sutton is a promising young talent. Jordan Jarvis will be their only hope of finishing near UICA qualification.
MARKETVILLE
Manager: Robert Reid (Daera, 55)
Stadium: The Maw (Marketville, 42,000)
Key Players: Joseph Tafti, Jonathan Andreyso, William Kelly, Pierce Williams, Morgan Farmer, Joseph O'Haine, Maurice Arcuri, Cameron Winton
In: Pierce Williams (17, LB, Eura) and Joseph O’Haine (16, CM, Eura) from Project 90+ Eura for free.
Out: Sterling Rose (19, CDM, Eura) to Cazadores Cathair (Audioslavia) for £6.5m.
Marketville just about avoided relegation and will be hoping to repeat that feat again this year. Yet they have barely strengthened with the exception of a couple of youth players, and with the sale of wonderkid Sterling Rose they have lost the key cog in their midfield machine. They look like strong favourites for the drop this time round.
OAKSTONE
Manager: Gareth Red (52, Eura)
Stadium: The Oak House (Oakstone, 82,402)
Key Players: Gary Shudland, Dario Ragili, Richie Wallins, Henry Gibson, Karl Wallace, Rudy Valencia, Noah Bryan, Toño Morsón, Pierrhe Rossi, Mitchell Mowbry, Pola Grabnyak, Frank Cardle
In: N/A
Out: N/A
Here comes another team with little summer activity to talk about. Oakstone are a quality team, but they’ll need more depth if they want to push harder for Globe Cup football.
REVOLUTIONARIES
Manager: Lucas Morton (50, Eura)
Stadium: Sasky Rising Memorial Stadium (Brigham, 107,000)
Key Players: Ben Prince, Joe Caffin, Eamon Power, Morten Salo, Mark Rogers, Niels Kruse, Kevin Colbert, Gareth Blackthorn, John Spartan, Gabi, Skorji Oslograd, Liam Allen, Amable Deniau
In: Skorji Oslograd (33, ST, Eura) from FC Axel Heiburg (Polar Islandstates) for £3m.
Out: Nick Feeney (36, RB, Eura) retired.
Despite the retirement of club and national legend Nick Feeney, Revolutionaries must be anticipating this new season highly. They have a class goalkeeper in Ben Prince, and a firm back line of Caffin, Salo, Rogers and Kruse, with the latter now looking formidable as part of the Polarian national set up. Their midfield is world class, and up front they have two ageing but world class strikers in Oslograd, returning to Eura but not to Bastion to the shock of many, as well as the very good Liam Allen who will surely be the one of the three to start consistently. It could be a four way title race between them, Ulsa, Directus and Spartangrad.
SPARTANGRAD
Manager: Clark Robinson (55, Eura)
Stadium: Olympic Stadium (Spartangrad, 104,773)
Key Players: Andy Quinn, Weylon Churchilli, Rhys Gibbons, Alexsandr Lyngstrad, Alexandr Savitskiy, Armando Elevado, Császár Mór, Severin Haraldsson, Mike Adams, Lewis Hughes, Victor Larsen, Scott Bloomfield
In: Scott Bloomfield (16, CF, Eura) from Project 90+ Eura for free.
Out: Sam Thomas (35, CF, Eura) to Metropolis Alligators (Valladares) for free.
Spartangrad secured Champions Cup qualification comfortably last season, but their title challenge faltered early. Now they go on, but this time without club legend Sam Thomas, who appears to have decided to take a one or two season end of career stroll in Valladares before retiring. The all-time Goldleague top scorer will be sorely missed, but the deadly Polarian Victor Larsen and his new understudy Scott Bloomfield will be more than enough to soften the blow.
ULSA
Manager: Albert Osman (68, Eura)
Stadium: Troutbridge (Ulsa, 97,460)
Key Players: Chris Waller, Gareth Dawkins, Gavin Madison, Frank Ainsworth, Lyle Heath, Lukasz Urfstadt, Rob Bell, Luis Aldardo, Rubén Morantes, Ryan King, Craig Sinclair, Michael Tello
In: Frank Ainsworth (19, CB, Eura) from Suttonville for £7m.
Out: N/A
It is no secret that Albert Osman is preparing to retire before long, after bagging his most dominant title win yet last season. He won’t go yet though, and they’ve already found a ready made replacement for someone who will retire soon. Lyle Heath appeared to reach his breaking point at the World Cup over the summer and it seems he is being phased out in favour of new defender Frank Ainsworth, a hard man in the mould of Grant Davis who broke through for Suttonville last season. They are clear title favourites.
USMER
Manager: Billy Welsh (51, Eura)
Stadium: Ludvik Ring (Usmer, 69,492)
Key Players: Evan Sanders, Matt Maher, Reece Hanson, Alfie Wallace, Brandon Bartlett, Leo Hargreaves, George Davies
In: Evan Sanders (31, GK, Eura) from Suttonville for £3.5m, Matt Maher (33, CB, Eura) from Falourr for £900k, Patrick May (30, ST, Helving) from Usmer for £250k.
Out: N/A
After bouncing back as Silver League champions last season, Usmer have gone to great lengths to ensure they don’t end up straight back where they came from. Sanders, Maher and May are all in their thirties but are solid Gold League level players. They’re expected to be relegated, but one suspects they might just stay up.
WHITEPILL
Manager: Mason Ingram (48, Eura)
Stadium: White Coast Road (Whitepill, 28,830)
Key Players: Greg Bramson, Jesus Reyes, Nick Leather, Pedro Corrigan, David Johnstone, Charles Owens, Dale Huxtable
In: N/A
Out: N/A
It is quite surprising that Whitepill haven’t bought anyone over the summer given that they narrowly avoided relegation last season, but then it’s likely they’ve been investing the money in club facilities as they always do when they pop up in to the Goldleague for a short stint. Won’t achieve anything more than battling to survive.
WORKERS UNION
Manager: Jaroslav Masaryk (40, Mytannion)
Stadium: Workers Athletic Achievement Stadia for Make Benefit of People (Callodown, 80,000)
Key Players: Alexander Roudet, Brian Marner, Massimo Dini, Ed Hill, Daniel Callorca, Reece Kent
Bernd Gloeckner, Freddie Nolan, Colin Nelson, Nick Ward, Isaac Grant
In: Freddie Nolan (19, CM/CAM, Eura) from Dashturnbein for £5.3m, Reece Kent (23, RW, Eura) from Thagarnia for £4m.
Out: Djourou Calaga (37, CDM, Eura) retired, Mason Oliver (33, AM, Eura) retired.
Every year, Workers Union seem like a team with the potential to be great, but ultimately only ever achieves a lower mid table finish, or fights to stave off relegation. This season, they really are an unknown quality. Roudet is a superb goalkeeper, but their defence is unbalanced albeit experienced. Their midfield has received nearly £10m of investment in the form of Reece Kent and risky signing Freddie Nolan, but it lacks pace. Their front line is proven, but overly reliant on Grant. Who knows how they will do this season.
CHARITY SHIELD XXI
ULSA 2 - 0 BASTION
Tello 19, King 36
Ulsa won the Charity Shield comfortably at Castle Road, beating the newly revived Bastion with two first half goals. Michael Tello got started on mauling the defences of the Gold League early with a 19th minute strike, before Ryan King secured the result with a tap in from a ball into the box by Morantes.
