Searchlight (Survival Horror RP; INTEREST)

Postby Cylarn » Thu Aug 28, 2014 1:18 pm

Everyone loses contact with someone or something every once in a while. You might be in the middle of an important cell phone call while driving down the road, and then BAM! You enter a deadzone/crash into something because you weren't paying attention to the semi driving down the opposite side of the road. A certain plane may go missing, and when all attempts to contact said plane end up instead contacting "hiss city," authorities will do everything in their power to figure out where 300 or so people just went and why they have gone missing. Well, what happens when a town goes off the map?

You might be asking: "what the hell is Cylarn talking about now?" Well, in this story, instead of a plane or other item going off the radar, it's a town that seems to go missing. The town of Holliman, NC, is an unremarkable little town located near the NC Research Triangle, the suburban town catering mainly to researchers and their families. In the middle of May of 2012, a seemingly unnatural phenomena has overtaken little Holliman. A dense, massive cloud of fog has engulfed the entire town up to its limits, obscuring views from land, air, and even space. Communications to and from Holliman have also been affected, and no word has left the town since the day the fog rolled in. To make matters worse, the authorities report that no vehicles or people have been seen leaving the town as well. In an attempt to figure out what has been going on, the Wake County Sheriff's Department dispatched 4 deputies in order to get down to the bottom of the situation.

It's been one week since those deputies last reported in, when they were just entering the town limits. The state is now overwhelmed with news about the unnatural situation, with many theories as to why a town of 1,000 people has seemingly slipped off the map without a trace. With people demanding action, the Governor and the Adjutant General have decided to take action, putting together a task force in order to get to the bottom of the mystery. The creation of Task Force Searchlight has heralded the beginning of Operation Factfinder. Comprised of several NC Army National Guard units as well as a small component of federal government employees, civilian experts, and foreign observers, the battalion-sized force has been supplied with an array of equipment and a blank check in order to uncover what truly happened in Holliman. What they are about to face is something that no human should ever encounter.

Yup, this is like The Mist, but not really. This RP is still in the developmental stages, and I am looking to gather up assistance with the RP and/or tags from interested RP'ers. On the subject of what we are going up against, I have some ideas, though I wouldn't mind crowdsourcing some suggestions. I was thinking of some sort of Lovecraftian evil or something reminiscent of Silent Hill, though I'd like to get a few more suggestions before putting up a poll and getting the formal OOC set up, along with player applications.

It's a combination of physical manifestations of evil as well as psychological horror. Basically, there will be some sort of conduit of some sort that is channeling the negative energy of some sort into the town. Most likely, it will probably be an item recovered from an archaeological dig overseas, and brought to a research lab located in the town to be studied.

Ok thanks! I personally think a Silent Hill-like Rp might be good combined with a few other elements. You probably should start a poll.

I want to see what other ideas I can get, first. Also, I am currently working on organizing what units comprise Searchlight. I am thinking of having the task force consist of an infantry/military police company, an engineer company, a medical company, a quartermaster company, a headquarters company, and then at least one other company.

We'll also have foreign observers and civilian personnel. The civilians will likely be from government groups like FEMA and from the NC Department of Public Safety.

I'd be open to that as well.

If we can get 3 more people interested, I'll put up a poll to decide what we're going to do.

If we go with Lovecraftian horrors, then it is probable that the town will be located next to a large lake, that has a number of submerged subterranean caverns and tunnels that will house some sort of colony for the Deep Ones, or even housing some sort of monstrous entity. If anyone would like to assist with deciding how exactly to incorporate Lovecraftian elements into the RP, I'd appreciate it.

Perhaps going along the lines of Star-ship troopers? A big creature that lives underground, using telepathy to control those above, forcing them to either sacrifice those it has no hold over, or sacrifice themselves to it? Possibly having either small human sized "workers" or just using mind controlled humans to do its work? Then the fog could be some kind of seed that infects the brain? Hence why no one tried to leave or call for help, because they don't feel in danger?

Or a creature/creatures that can only breathe in the fog. Once some element was added to the lake (Or a cavern holding the fog was opened) the fog spread to town, allowing the creatures a bigger hunting ground. Using the density of the fog they slowly hunt down those in the village?

Tagged. Would you allow state trooper/state bureau of investigation as well or want to keep it to National Guard/Feds?

Could take it into Shadow Over Insmouth territory and have it so the locals are the ones who ceased contact and murdered the deputies.

98% of all NS users would cry if they had to read a lot to understand an RP, regardless of how good it was. If you're one of the 2% who simply would sit back and laugh, copy and paste this into your sig.

Interpol is more of an administrative entity, so I'd guess either intel or foreign military observers attached to American units.

Maybe Intel is more needed. After all, this is a problem within the state of USA, so I don't think foreign military observers are really needed. Intel, on the other hand, will be able to provide intelligence reports first to their country and then be able to considering providing the observers.

Foreign observers would most likely come from the agencies of foreign governments or private groups, such as scientific organizations, national security groups, and foreign affairs agencies. There might be a few military officers, however they would likely be senior staff officers (such as Lieutenant Colonels and above who serve in Headquarters or Command units) who are observing the operation in order to study the response of a military force to an anomaly. Personnel from NOAA and the USGS would also be attending. There is no real explanation as to what the situation in Holliman is exactly, and it is being treated as an anomaly. You've got people demanding answers as to what happened, especially from the families of those who disappeared.

Also, foreign military personnel and national security personnel would not be armed in this scenario.
