They did between 1 and 14.

I was under the impression that there were actually 13 rifles between the Garand and the M14, but they were all experimental.

When you google "M2 Rifle" this is what you get:

I think carbines are numbered differently than service rifles, which is why we had both the M1 Carbine and the M1 Garand.

1 DM per squad is alright, potentially more than you need, though, unless your troops are routinely engaging in long range fighting, such as in Afghanistan. I can't tell you the numbers of DMs per platoon in the US Army, but in the Soviet deployment to Afghanistan I believe they found 1 DM per platoon (motorised rifles) was adequate.
Now, snipers attached at the platoon level is quite unorthodox. I believe most militaries attach them at the battalion level, since they normally operate independently, rather than supporting a platoon.

Finland employs 4 men sniper team per company, and that team can be split to two two man sniper teams to support two of 3-4 platoons of the company.

Soviet platoons would have as many as 6 SVDs during the Afghanistan war. Its mostly 1-2 SVDs now. However the unique combat situation that was presented in Afghanistan warranted such a number.

French infantry platoons have 2 FR-F2 rifles.

US Army platoons don't have a marksman, instead they issue ACOGs and have 2 M240B machine guns in a weapons support squad, while the Soviet platoon doesn't have a GPMG instead having RPKs, and the French only have 3 FN Minimis.

Rifle M1 skipped straight to Rifle M14, M15 in little service and now Rifle M16.

I thought the Army made 2 Mk 14s available for each platoon on deployment in Afghanistan?

There were also several other DMRs in limited use with the Army.

You're average platoon may not have them.

I wouldn't doubt that strings get pulled and they get DMRs, however with two M240Bs and 6 M249s, DMRs may not be 100% necessary.

afaik. Then things get added to that, such as moar GPMGs, L96, L86 etc.

Heavy squad
Under normal conditions, an 8-man British infantry section is armed with four L85 rifles, one with an under-slung grenade launcher, two L86 light support weapons (LSW), and two FN Minimi light machine guns. For combat in Afghanistan, troops armed themselves more heavily, creating "heavy" squads. Weapons include:

1 × L85A2 rifle or L129A1 marksman rifle
1 × L85A2 rifle with L123A2 UGL (under-slung grenade launcher)
2 × L86A2 LSW's, or 2 × L96A1 sniper rifles, or 2 × L115A3 sniper rifles (or mixture)
2 × L110A1 light machine guns
2 × L7A2 GPMGs

In this layout and given the mission in Afghanistan, they'd either be stationed in an outpost or on patrol. Though certainly heavier than it could otherwise be, I don't believe this layout is prohibitively heavy.

Seems kind of pointless to have a GPMG intended to be operated in the "light role" if it still needs a crew of three.

When the Russians finish introducing the PKP as section machine gun, I'm fairly confident that won't have a crew of three either.

No but they will most likely operate in a crew of at least 2.

GPMGs are extraordinarily heavy and typically they don't carry much ammo on them to save weight.

So do it. Why does you being able to issue it hinge in any way, shape or form on it being real.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.
