Opening Ceremony
Ainin Airways Stadium, Hartly

True Arctican Team

It was here at last. After several days of both wondrous speculation and downing dread in both Tarctica and around the region, the Summer Esquarian Games was finally kick-starting and the Opening Ceremony was already off to a brilliant start. In preparation, the Tarcticans had to wear garbs that proudly represent their home country, and at the same time also represent the old (and humane) glory of the fallen country that is the Arctican Confederation.

A decision was made to put up a neat white uniform with pants or skirts of varying colors, as it was used by Old Arctican soldiers and still widely in service in the Tarctican armed forces. The consensus also called for dark wool boots to be worn, symbolizing modern-yet-traditional footwear worn back in the country and the annual struggle of Arcticans - Tarcticans or not - against the discouraging cool or cold climate. They were also equipped with small Tarctican flags, but the flag matter was way antecedent to this day.

Among the Tarcticans was Hillary Harper, who was designated with pride as the flagbearer of the country. Perhaps she was one of the most important person of the whole team abroad.

Just before they were scheduled to parade, Harper was training herself simply to fly the flag of the country, known as the Stars of the North (refers to the eight white stars in the flag). Some of the athletes bombarded her with flag-waving ideas to best reveal the beauty of Arctica, which does not include rival Arctican states, but the only suggestion taken seriously was to wave it six times into a large beautiful shape. It may be unusual and ridiculous for Aininians and other nationalities, but it was gold for Tarcticans.

Then the time was up. At long last, the athletes were ready to stream through the Parade of Nations and show that Tarctica, a courageous nation up in the Arctic Ocean, was formidably ready for any challenges that the Summer Esquarian Games and other athletes would chuck at them. Without any hesitation the Tarctican teams, led by Harper, streamed forward and notwithstanding the lack of knowledge of some bystanders about the existence of [T]Arctica.

As many members waved their small flags cheerfully, Harper slashed the large ensign as one of the athletes had suggested. She paced herself and attempted, with decent success, to send it off six times to form the shape of an imaginary five-pointed star. After all, who doesn't know how associated the five-pointed star is with this Arctican country?

The prideful team also did not forget to blare out a stanza and the tune of a well-known post-Old Arctica song.

We ar' Arctica, together forever
Our strength n' bond never withers out
We ar' Arctica, unison forever
The downfall never leaves any out!

Even without the background string music it sounded as if it doesn't get any better than it. Any Tarcticans in the crowded audience would be cheering wide and loud by now, but surely they would be silenced by the varying noise coming from the rest of the crowd.

Back in Tarctica, President Jonas Smithson Rodriguez was watching the Opening Ceremony in the Executive and, seeing good Tarctican progress in the massive international event, made himself a happy smile, the first since Old Arctica was no more.
Common Name: Arctica
True President: Jonas Smithson Rodriguez
State: Anarchy - numerous warring states in Arctica

Hartly 2014: Day -1

BNB takes a look at all the Britannon action in the first day of Hartly 2014, with archery and football scheduled as the only events to take place.

Image

Let's start with the archery, where we didn't have any hopes at all. Action began in the women's event first where Helen Lee and Elizabeth Hall represented Britanno. Unfortunately, both were eliminated straight away, coming in forty ninth and fifty fourth place respectively. While we were a long way from a top spot in the men's event, Chris White managed to qualify for the next round, coming twelfth overall.

Elizabeth Hall, who finished in last place out of over fifty competitors, said she was "extremely disappointed" with her performance. Helen Lee was not available to comment. However, Chris White told us he was "over the moon" that he easily qualified, with his now eliminated teammates, Howard Grey and Ryan Davies, throwing their full support behind him.

Football was a very different story. Things looked positive for the male team when they went a goal ahead in their match against Masseau, but the opposition was too strong and went on to score two goals. Success for the women (pictured) was obvious after a stunning performance resulting in a 3-0 win against New Zepuha.

Captain Jim Shaw went on social media to apologise for the loss, but was soon after praised for his "outstanding" leadership by Edward Field. The female team also received praise from millions after their brilliant dominance in a match that saw them fly to the top of their group.

The medal table remains empty of course, but the Unolians and Orientalians took early leads in the male and female archery respectively. In football, Nevanmaa, Michillies, Concordia, Unolia, Tarctica and Iglesiantis can be seen at the top of their groups.

OOC: Archery Team Rankings are complete and avaliable on my previous post. I will be spending all day on Challong creating brackets (which will be randomized) for various events. Volleyball and softball groups will be announced today, sorry for the delay.

Worst case scenario, tomorrow will be an off day as we try to reassemble ourselves. Expect one of each team event (stagnated by gender with the exception of football) to be held daily. We will roughly use London 2012 as a base. I have archery brackets available on demand, but those are the only ones not randomized and seeded based on ranking.

Hartly Day 1
So far, Caucasia has survived the Games and has victoriously marched into the Stadium in Hartly. According to what we have heard from the athletes, they definitely seem to be enjoying Hartly.

Rundown:

Archery (Women's):
11th place: Marina Fyodorova Goes on
40th place: Luba Tymoshenko Eliminated

Archery (Mens):
26th place: Rus Dolov Goes on
34th place: Lek Denilov Eliminated

Football (Mens):
Luziyca 2-2 Caucasia Tie

Football (Women's):
Francilie 1-2 Caucasia Victory

National Team:
Eliminated

Summary:
In Archery, Marina Fyodorova did pretty well, and scored 11th place, while the other Archer, Luba Tymoshenko, underperformed and has been eliminated. Similar situation in the Mens section, with Rus Dolov scoring 26th place and will go on, but Lek Denilov has been eliminated. Today in Mens football, Caucasia did very well against Luziyca, even though in the end, the game ended in a tie. The Women's Football team has defeated the Francilie team 1-2, and there was much rejoicing on the Caucasian side. One way this was shown was when one of the players poured Gatorade all over herself. So in conclusion, today has been a bit off a meh day for the Team of Caucasia.

Opening Ceremony
Ainin Airways Stadium, Hartly

"Oh, the bloody irony," the Saint Jamesian commentator muttered as the gun came down to greet the fallen Aininian. "God knows how they screwed up Nautarya and now they play the sympathy card." Yet it couldn't wipe the anxious smiles off the faces of the small group of Saint James Islanders gathered at the stadium to greet their national team.

And the Parade of Nations soon began. It would be a long wait, given how far back "Saint" was in the alphabet, but eventually the moment the moment would come. "The Saint James Islands" roared through the stadium followed by a small group of people: Team Saint James Islands.

Petera Mikara led the group with pride, carrying the Birds Beak Banner high over his head with him. Dressed in full Takiari costume with palm wreaths on their head to match, the Saint James Islanders came in to a mutter of applause from the small Saint Jamesian contingent. And as the music began to play, the Islanders sang their Fair Island Hymn. If the Arcticans and Michillians and Luzzies could get away with it, why not they?

Our fair Isles, rising from the sea.
Where majesty and fortune hide.
Our home, our land, our treasure,
We sing your praise and swell with pride.

Your banner of blue and green, she waves,
Beneath clouds of purest white.
Your banner of rouge and green, she waves,
Beneath skies of azure blue.

Our fair Isles, forever free,
You will always be our own.
Our fair Isles, land of liberty,
That place that God calls home.

Opening Ceremony
Hartly, Ainin

Ikora had prepared for the Games like no other event the Corporation had attended.
A parade of completely black-suited athletes, bearing the stark white eagle of the Ikora Corporation's famous and well-known logo marched forwards with equal footsteps, with six of the athletes waving the massive banners of Ikora and its subsidiaries. A low, orchestral sound rose up from the crowd, making a crescendo of noise until finally a theme that all the citizens of Ikora knew well began playing. The sad but optimistic tones of the song washed over the crowds as the parade continued to march on.

The song reached the climax, and a single, universal chant from the athletes arose, with one word. "Victory!" they yelled.

From a box high up in the stadium, the Director of the Corporation, Korionalus Vaeron, watched over the parade, a thin line stretched across his face. Worn, wrinkled and aging features dominated his structure after all the years of working hard to keep his Corporation stable. His hair was a greying silver, with a pale shine from the golden sun showing above. Dark circles and bags were visibly prominent amongst the wrinkled, cracked and whitened skin.

He wore a black suit. It was crisply pressed and ironed, fitted perfectly with a black tie and stark white shirt, the tie emblazoned with the ever-prominent logo of the Ikora Corporation.

CEO Rema Ningh stood besides him, in severe-looking makeup and a harsh business suit with shiny high heels upon her feet. Her features could only be described as "angry". Her eyebrows had been pencilled to be in a permanent downwards position, and her cheekbones had been highlighted using powder to bring out a choked, unbreathable look. Her jet-black, smooth hair was drawn back in an abrasive-looking bun. She wore an ascot with the logo of the Board of Directors stitched onto it.

Armed guards in full body armor stood by the doors, clutching machine-pistols.

The Director allowed a small smirk onto his face as he watched the athletes walked by.

Opening Ceremony
_____________________________________________
Today after a long day of exploring, the Caucasian team entered the stadium proudly singing the National Anthem of Caucasia. The walked in, Caucasian flag was held high, being carried proudly by the Caucasian team. In fact, many of the athletes were dancing their way with the Caucasian crowd, this included the flag-bearer, Rus Dolov. The Caucasian athletes wore green jackets along with blue dress pants. Meanwhile, Sasha Demichev, President of Caucasia was sitting near the top of the stadium with a smile on his face, and eating french fries, and he too, was humming the Caucasian National Anthem. There were six guards standing by the President, 2 watching the doorway into the box, while the other four were watching the Caucasian athletes, and the crowds for any potential threats to the safety of the athletes and the President.

The Summer Esquarian Games

Opening Ceremony:

Millions of Bormeatrians tuned in to watch the opening ceremony in Hartly early today. The Bormian team was ecstatic, seeing that most of them had never experienced an opening ceremony. The ceremony started and the Parade of Nations soon got underway, and Bormeatrian fans were waiting in large numbers in the stands for our wonderful team to emerge. The Bormeatrian team was dressed in the tradition outfits of athletes in opening ceremonies in Bormeatri (The outfits are pictured below). As the nations in front of Bormeatri were emerging emotions and excitement was building in the athletes. It was finally Bormeatri's turn to parade across the stage, and Duke Fontana, the flag-bearer, was waving the Palm and Stripes as fast as he could. The team paraded across the stage smiling, waving Bormeatrian flags and flags of the Esquarian Games, taking photos, sefies and videos, and dancing and singing to the national anthem that was playing. Bormeatrian fans in the stands went crazy and were screaming and waving flags, and shouting "A-S-B! A-S-B! A-S-B! A-S-B!". As the team was leaving the stadium the party was only getting started in Bormeatri. Fireworks and parties across the capital and the rest of the country were booming well after the ceremony ended. Reports show that 75% of the country was watching the opening ceremony and that 53% were attending parties.

Recap of Day -1:

So far the Summer Esquarian Games have been somewhat successful.

Archery:
Our own Helga Putin made it through the first round of Women's Archery, coming in 28th place. Ken Gilling also made it through, doing much better than expected finishing 18th in the first round. Beth Goldstein was eliminated from the competition, along with Darwin Stockholm. Darwin was nearly made it through to the next round, but was beat out by Paul Pierce (GIB). As many Bormeatrians know archery is not one of our strong points.

Men's Football:
So far our football teams are performing a little worse than The Bormeatrian Games Association (BGA) expected. Our men's football team tied with the Saint James Islands team 1 to 1. Michillies is leading Bormeatri's group but we are closely tailing them. The Nihilistic View (TNV) and Gibberan (GIB) also had a 1 to 1 draw in their game.

Women's Football:
Our women's football team suffered a humiliating 2-3 defeat by Luziyca (LUZ). Here's a Luziycaian breakdown of the game:

"But a shocking event came to the eighth rate women's football team, which was an oddity. Their first match against Bormeatri started with a Bormish player scoring a goal 15 minutes in, then 30 minutes in, ending the half with 2-0. But the Luzzies would make a comeback: shockingly. A midfielder, Margaret (Dionne, last name not really used) scored a goal 11 minutes in, then again 20 minutes in, drawing at the end of the 90 minutes. Extra time would result in Sarah Hope scoring a goal, enabling a Luziycan victory."

Our women's team had the win in the bag, but they slacked off in the second half resulting in Luziyca's win. This defeat will go into Bormeatri record books as a major failure by our women's soccer team. We are expecting comedians around Bormeatri to mock the game in the following weeks.

Hartly Games Opening Ceremony begins
Namorese team does not get medal yet
August 8, NMR 2369

HARTLY, AININ - The inaugural Summer Esquarian Games in Hartly, Ainin began with much pomp and circumstance, dancing, singing and chanting.
Image
Namor fails at football, as usual

The opening ceremony, which the Aininian government spent billions of ramon on according to reports, began with a presentation through dance of Ainin's history, from the beginning of native life in Ainin, to fighting between Aininian native tribes, on to Ainin's progress from an isolated island country to an industrialized, modern state. A speech from Ainin's late president Oliver Lapointe, credited with establishing Esquarium's first universal healthcare system and bringing about the country's so-called "social revolution," was shown. This was followed by a show of modern Ainin, featuring rock music, modern vehicles and a flyby of Aininian jets.

The games formally commenced when Aininian president Steven Mann announced its opening. The Parade of Nations began; strangely enough, many national teams did one common thing---chant and sing.

The Luziycan team entered like drunkards (or what the Luziycans formally described as "silly walk") as they sang their national anthem. The Tarctican team---in its first appearance in an athletic event since the country fell into anarchy---sang a popular song in their country. The Michillians sang their national anthem as well, just like the Luziycans.

But most noteworthy was what the Namorese team did when they entered the parade. Led by flagbearer Youja Kana (swimming), the athletes---who wore police uniforms and dress shoes, and some of them holding signs reading "Namor" in both English and Namorese---chanted "We are Namor" as they marched, sparking a positive reaction from Namorese audience watching the ceremony. They did not sing the national anthem, and was the only team who chanted instead of sang in the parade of nations if it's recalled correctly. President-General Fu Wen, who attended the opening ceremony, gave a smile of approval.

To many athletes in the Namorese team, the opening ceremony was a memorable part of the Games, although everything has just started.

"I feel humble to hold the Gukchi (national flag) for my team, my country," said Youja Kana, the flagbearer to PTH after the ceremonies ended. "But there's more to look forward to. I hope that my fellow teammates will do well, that I myself will do well, so we can make ourselves and our people proud."

A poor start for now
Despite the Namorese team's optimism over their performance in the Games, Day -1 of the Esquarian Games passed without much results for Namor.
Image
Li Yajan got 43rd place in women's archery

In women's archery, Li Yajan got 43rd place, followed by Fa King on 52nd place. Both were eliminated as a result; leading the pack are Unolia's Panuan Ali, Hermoine Young of the Nihilistic View, and Alisia von Schutzen of New Zepuha.

Orientalia's Ming Fa is doing exceptionally well in men's archery. She Jian of Namor came in 20th place, and Wan Suizang, in 56th place, was eliminated. Some are expressing disappointment at Namor's performance in archery; after all, as a country with an ancient civilization bows and arrow have constituted a significant part of Namorese culture.

As the Games began with football as well, it's no surprise that the Namorese team did badly. The mens' team lost 0-5 to Unolia, putting them way back in Group D. The women's football team lost 0-1 to Rutuba.

Other news
  • Fu Wen: Namor willing to seek dialogue with Triumvirate - In an interview with Mojing Sibo, President-General Fu Wen said he encourages Namorese dialogue with the Triumvirate countries. "We cannot afford to contain the Triumvirate
and refuse to talk with them," he said.
  • Gibberish press mistakes Mojing paper with PTH - In covering Mojing Sibo's interview with Fu Wen, Gibberish press said that interview was "courtesy to PTH," an act which one on Namorese social media called "hilarious."
  • PFC CenCo Member: Luziycan performance at Hartly Summer Games is proof of Luziycan "stupidity" - In his blog, People's First Coalition member Yang Shoufu said that the "silly walk" the Luziycans performed at their entrance in the Hartly Games' Opening Ceremony is proof that the Luziycans "have a high level of stupidity."

COMMENTS
Jang Ong
DID ANYONE SEE WHAT PTH DID? THEY DIDN'T MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT THE NAMORESE ANTELOPIAN DANCERS WERE KICKING (OPPRESSING) THE AININIANS. THAT WAS "FIGHTING BETWEEN AININIAN NATIVES." Censorship at its finest. 92 7

Mang Vang
@Jang Ong I think they did that because it doesn't look good narrating it. But nonetheless this is ridiculous. You want to portray the human desire for freedom? Sure, but why do you have to troll your ally and number-one buyer of planes while you're at it? It's not right. 41 29

Dian No
@Mang Vang With all due respect, just let it go. The Aininians were indeed oppressed by the Antelopians, and won their independence, and that's what they are today, an independent nation. Seriously, that was like 200 or so years ago, just drop it. It's not like the same Antelopian regime rules us today. I must say that like any people in the world, we Namorese have done stuff that we're proud of and stuff we aren't proud of. 32 19

Go Ming
@Dian No Sure, sure, we made a mistake repressing the Aininians, but the same argument works the other way. It's been 200 years, right? Then why can the Aininians drop it? Why do they have to revisit it? 32 2

Txo Ying
Let's stop talking about the dancer thing and focus on how PTH covered it. Why did PTH have to not mention it? It's okay to do so. I'm really beginning to question the credibility of government-run media when it comes to stuff like this... 30 5

TNV TIMES
Let The Games Begin!

So as the dust settles on the first day of competition at the Esquarian Summer Games The Nihilistic view had a spiffing day. The first sport up today that espouses our tradition and gentlemanly virtues more that almost any other was archery. The team had a rather marvelous result which sees all our archers through the qualifying rounds as both individuals and teams. The mens team in particular was very strong with Alfred Wright, Cicero Thompson and Percy Roberts coming 2nd 3rd and 4th respectively in the mens with virtually identical scores. They therefore easily qualified for the team event way out in front. The Women found the going slightly harder but the team still qualified in third place and Hermione Young in particular having a very good day coming second in the individual qualification event. The other sport ran was football, as we know not the most popular of activities in TNV but the men normally hold their own with limited support and so it proved today with a 1-1 draw with Gibberan. It leaves us still in the running to get out the group and serves as a solid start with four teams on one point. Womens football is still a taboo with many in the upper echelons of Nihilistic View society believing that it is un ladylike to partake in such an activity especially wearing shorts. IT showed how unpopular the game is back home as the team lost 5-1 and there were very few Nihilistic View subjects in the crowd.

Moving on the the opening ceremony, in a curious move the Aininian republic seemed to indicate that it is a haven for hate and discourse with the opening line at the opening ceremony "Hate, rather than space is the final frontier." It is a rather curious choice of opening words for a games that as an institution is supposed to bring the nations of Esquarian closer together. This was then reinforced by an antagonising opening ceremony that looked more like a calculated attempt to insult the Namorese than show what is great about Ainin. It appears at least to the Times that the opening line refers to the hate Ainin holds for Namor. According to a source close to King Constantine III- who was present due to his dual role of head of state and as the head of TNVAA- and his son the heir to the throne who was also in attendance they were very disappointed in the spirit of the ceremony. It is thought Constantine has even gone so far as to instruct his ambassador to the Aininian republic Grand Duke Claus Von Hernig to meet with President Mann to address the issue. Whilst it is known that Constantine is a great admirer of the republic which in itself is highly unusual due to his general opposition to republicanism, and he feels some sympathy with Ainin for the treatment Ainin has received from Namor in the past, he is furious that an occasion supposed to be about friendship and peace has been hijacked to make a political point. It is thought Von Hernig has been instructed to explain that certain elements of the winter games were not the greatest example to the region and Ainin had in it's power the opportunity to change tack and ensure that Esquarium games could be a force for good in the cold war and that the Aininian republic could be at the forefront of this new movement. Whilst it is yet to be seen how the government of Ainin will react to this it is certainly hopped that in future games are conducted in a more congenial and respectful manner befitting that of civilised nations.

After the questionable opening ceremony the athletes parade was then held, a rather tedious affair to be honest with just a load of people walking around in a circle looking homosexual in bright clothes holding flags. Nothing to see here unless one wishes to see some of our fine ladies and gentlemen in formal attire.

So on to tomorrows program which among other things contains such gentlemanly sports as Archery, fencing, and shooting. We are medal hopefuls in these sports and with a bit of luck and fair play we may look to tomorrow in great anticipation.

(OOC: I'm sorry I'm late, I had some things to do. I hope it's fine to you all.)

RTI coverage on the opening ceremony of the Esquarian Games

The beginning

May Bryn: "Hello, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Harly, the gateway to Ainin, for the opening ceremony of the First Esquarian Summer Games! We are giving you all the coverage as broadcast here on RTI. Tens of thousands will watch the event at the Ainin Airways Stadium, home to fencing and football, with a further billions of people are watching this astounding event on screen. We are now live from the stadium where everything will begin, isn't it, Yanu?"

Yanu Bayens: "Yes, what a wonderful show we will have it here tonight! We hope you enjoy it as we do, as it will certainly be a source of inspiration for the nations of the world to understand to each other, including Iglesiantis, where we saw yesterday a draw on men's football against Atlantia Creek, one goal to one, and a massive victory against Masseau, five to one. Nevertheless, the Iglesians congratulated both teams for both great matches and we hope other athletes and teams do the same as well, no matter the result. May, it's your turn."

May Bryn: "Well, maybe our teams inspire tens of millions of Igles who have their passion in this sort of sporting events, this one with a particularly symbolic message: No matter you win, you should take part. So maybe that's a starting point for us, and maybe we avoid those silly riots that usually happen at football matches between these or other teams. We won't discuss those things tonight, we will focus instead on the opening ceremony!"

Yanu Bayens: "And the stadium... so dark... maybe it has a message inside. We'll just wait to see how things will go on." Yanu Bayens will then translate into Iglesian the initial, booming voice who began the opening ceremony as such. (continues)

Parade of Nations

Yanu Bayens: "And, as we progress through the alphabetical order, we are now seeing Team Iglesiantis! They're carrying white sweaters, blue pants and yellow chimney-pot hats, with scarves saying "Iglesiantis" [in its native name] in the flag's colours in an amazing show! Our flagbearer tonight is Yama Laxy, who will do 100m and is a favourite amongst many. Team Iglesiantis has certainly a lot of favourites, as do most teams of reference such as Unolia."

May Bryn: "As the spectacular performance of the Iglesian team progresses, one may witness the Iglesian president, Yaryn Yagara, greeting the athletes, together with his wife, Ana Eyaby. We are also listening to some fellows singing the Iglesian national anthem, while some people of the team sung a chant: We are one, we are united, we are Team, we are Iglesiantis! As amazing as this has become, with athletes jumping to express who they are, this team has shown, like others, how to perform at such a grand-scale event as are the Esquarian Games."

Yanu Bayens: "As you may see, May, nothing has gone wrong yet, and we hope nothing goes wrong tonight, as we are speaking of the opening ceremony of the most important sporting event in Esquarium. And as we are speaking about Team Iglesiantis, we are also speaking about amongst the most multicultural and most diverse teams these games have, describing pretty much what Iglesiantis is nowadays: a nation which is a blend of a constant, neverending, proud crossing and contrast of cultures into a brand new Iglesian culture. We hope this crossing between cultures continues and we hope this continues uniting people as Iglesiantis, a country with a neverending pride about who we are as a nation, developing and still developing, ever and ever."

May Bryn: "And I think, Yanu, that's what sport is meant to be, uniting what has been divided. And that's what Iglesiantis, I believe, has done successfully. That gives Iglesiantis... er... uh... a certainly exotic place. For some reason sport has stood against racism and for respect. Respecting diversity, respecting difference, we're all different but also equal. We are united precisely when we are diverse. This is a team, or better, this is the team everybody everybody has been waiting for tonight."

Yanu Bayens: "The Iglesian athletes, happy as ever our people will be, are doing an amazing show tonight. We hope to give them the very best luck, no matter what the results will be. You, the athletes of Iglesiantis, are an inspiration to us, a message from me as we are going to be driven to the next team of this great parade of the opening ceremony of the First Esquarian Summer Games in Hartly, Ainin. Next team, May!"

Opening ceremony

Järvenranta: "...and ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the opening ceremony of the 2014 Esquarian Summer Games, live from Hartly, Ainin. I'm Antti Järvenranta, and I'm joined by Raipe Höyrynen."
Höyrynen: "Thank you Antti. It looks like the lights are dimming and the ceremony is about to start, hold onto your seats!"

Järvenranta: "Well, the ceremony sure started in a politically correct way. Hate is the final frontier? What do you think of that Raipe?"
Höyrynen: "I must say that I didn't expect anything that cheesy, and we're only 30 seconds into the opening ceremony."
Järvenranta: "An opening like this was indeed expected from a country like Ainin. We'll see if they've got more than enforced tolerance in store of us."

Höyrynen: "They are now presenting the history Ainin right from prehistory to the modern days. I'm posivitely surprised, I anticipated something less flashy"
Järvenranta: "I do agree. This presentation was very well done, and if you exclude the first 30 seconds, almost clear of tolerance propaganda that the nation of Ainin is so infamous for"

Järvenranta: "Right now, the band of Aininian naval jaegers is playing the Aininian national anthem called.. Let me check.. Duh loob duh etherneety. A pleasant tune, but the lyrics do repulse me."
Höyrynen: "I find myself in agreement with you. For a politically neutral festival that is attended by women and childen as well, I'm glad that the violent and barbaric lyrics were left unsung"

Höyrynen: "And here comes the second cheesy line of the opening ceremony, "there is a new order in the world, and it will be a vanguard of the times", an apparent reference to the so-called "Social Revolution"
Järvenranta: "Them Aininians sure do love these cheesy one-liners, don't they?"
Höyrynen: "They sure do!"

Parade of Nations

Järvenranta: "...and here they come, the Nevan team is now approaching the stadium! Proudly waving the blue cross and singing Long live the Merciful, the Nevan team is one of the largest teams attending the Games at well over 200 athletes"
Höyrynen: "The blue cross flag is being carried by Atte Hyvärinen, who is competing in men's archery"
Järvenranta: "They seem so confident! I truly hope that confidence will manifest into something great during the games. I trust that our team will do well"
Höyrynen: "So do I."
Järvenranta: "I do believe I hear a few cranky people shouting obscenities at our team, but they're not bothered! If anything, it shows that our team is made out of steel, words can't harm them!"
Höyrynen: "Our team has sisu, and that's what we are going to use to our advantage. Go Nevanmaa!"

Höyrynen: "Nevan team is also one of the purest teams in the Games. As far as I know, we're the only nation whose team consists solely of white folks. Even our neighbouring countries like Vjaarland and Vyvland have managed to snap a few negroes from down south into their team"
Höyrynen: "They do stick out like a sore thumb. I must say the Iglesian team in particular looked like some unholy mixture of degeneracy and rot, I find it rather unfair that they allow nations to take negroes out of their native jungles and put them on running tracks. Of course they're going to run faster, they've gotten a lot of experience on the savannas running from zebras and lions. Their place is simply not here"
Järvenranta: "Indeed. I'm sure there are some people in the home audience who disagree with me, but hear this: If we don't allow doping in these games, why should we allow negroes? That's cheating!"

Analysis: Days -1 and 0, and the Opening Ceremony
"Absolutely incredible ceremony," says ABC Chief EsqGames Correspondent
Image
Day -1/0 Medal Tally
HARTLY, LK ― These certainly were an eventful few days in Hartly as the first few events got underway, followed by a stunning Opening Ceremony that drew much praise, except in Nevanmaa, where its insane press went on some random rant about traditional values (a reminder that this is ABC Sports' editorial column, and we're allowed to be biased). Leading the way in almost all events so far is the favoured competitor, Unolia, whose teams have performed spectacularly.

Archery
In archery, Aininian athletes obtained satisfying preliminary round results, a surprising outcome for a group considered underdogs by most and that had underperformed on the national circuit this year. Both female archers Carol Domitille and Macy Khloe managed to qualify for the next round, placing 21st and 26th, respectively. The cutoff is 32nd place. Leading the pack, as expected, is the talented Panuan Ai of Unolia, whose performance was stunning. Meanwhile, in the men's category, star Aininian archer Jameson Kevin placed a respectable 5th, while his counterpart was much less lucky. Kelley Hedley placed dead last, in the 60th place, and is eliminated from the next round.

Football
It's football season again, as the Hartly Games began in beauty. Coming fresh out of a respectable 4th place finish in the Coupe d'Esquarium, Team Ainin is expected to put up a hell of a fight at the Hartly Games, both in the women's and men's divisions. Unfortunately, the first game began as a disaster as Michillies beat Ainin 1-0, sending our team to 6th place in Group B. But, this being only the first of many games, we have plenty of time to catch up. In the women's division, we were better off, defeating the Saint James Islands 2-1 to take second place in Group A, only behind Britanno, who absolutely wrecked New Zepuha in a 3-0 flushout, sending the latter into last place.

Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony was a great mix of acoustics, visual effects, dance and modern technology, draped in a shadow of intrigue. It started with a history presentation, starting with the Delian Kingdom's establishment, to the events of the First Aininian Civil War that threatened to destroy the country, and then visited the Kingdom of Eternal Salvation's (more commonly known as the Glorious Confederation) re-unification of the isles under its blue-white-green flowered banner, until a Namorese invasion put an end to the historic Aininian monarchies. It then presented an artistic interpretation of the Aininian Revolution, followed by Prime Minister Olivier Lapointe's declaration of a New Order, after which many Aininian technological innovations were displayed in a chronological fashion. This was topped off by the first fly-by of the latest AF-4 fighter jets and a fireworks display that left the audience dazzled. With a $217 million price tag, the ceremony was definitely held to high standards, which it broke through splendidly.

Evaline and Thuman, sitting on a... roof.
In a certainly interesting turn of events, after the Opening Ceremony had concluded and most spectators at Ainin Airways Stadium had already left, a small group of four men, dressed in masks reportedly being crude caricatures of Prime Minister Courtney Evaline and late Unolian leader Jarrod Thuman, managed to get access to its roof and unfolded a large banner prominently declaring the phrase "End the War on Men". They were confronted by Gendarmes on the ground, who, through a negotiator carrying a bullhorn, managed to convince them to come back down by threatening to use "lethal force" if they refused to comply. The banner was quickly taken down with the help of a small helicopter and the suspects in the case have been arrested. They are currently in prison awaiting trial for trespassing and reckless endangerment.

And once again, let's go Team Ainin! Bring your country pride and joy!

Medal table

HARTLY, AININ - The first day of the inaugural Esquarian games has come to an end. Thus, we here at the Constitution will report on the events that have occurred today in Hartly. Spoiler alert: we won a silver and a bronze.

Men's Team Archery
Long story short, us Luziycans suck at men's archery. Unsurprising because archery is normally only taught in Phys. Ed and while it is practiced and performed at many a festival, many don't do well. Michilles has the gold, Nihilists get silver and Bormeatri has bronze.

Boxing
In Bantamweight, Radoslaw Hledik from Vesterhag in the constituent republic of West Geadland defeated Luziycan-Vyvlander Abraham Kasprov 10-6, thereby eliminating Abraham of Vyvland from the previous round. Hledik is set to go on the second round.

When we asked him how the fight went, Radoslaw replied, "It was pretty easy, just a few punches to the torso, one to the jaw, and yeah. That felt good to see."

In Midweight though, the Luzzies fared poorly, with Dragisa Nowack being defeated 3-7 to Yusev Almanov from Caucasia, with Dragisa having punched savagely in the torso and the face.

Fencing
Our fencing team is preparing for its first match tomorrow. We wish them luck!

Baseball
In the match against the Unolian autonomous region of Roubao against Luziyca, the Luziycans began with no points, both being brick walls and unable to surmount each other. At the sixth inning, the Unolian player from Roubao hit a home run, taking him to home plate and giving Roubao a point. After the seventh inning stretch, Luziycan batter Simeon Pustin got a triple at first bat with the players from the region being pathetic in defense. The next bat by Jimmy Welsh got a double and Pustin got home, but the next batter struck thrice, and the next gave the Luzzies a third out, tying the match at 1-1.

The next inning saw two players on the bases (third and second), with a player from the autonomous region batting a home run and taking all three players home. Neither side were able to bat the ninth inning, resulting in Luziyca being defeated by the Unolian Roubao 1-4. We will improve next round!

Men's Football
Our national game: football has been very important to the lives of countless Luziycans (except Lombardians, but their 'football' is about as comprehensible as them speaking with their hands). Since that draw against Bormeatri, the national football team has been training as hard as they can. They re-adopted the total football strategy, and used the 1-1-8 pattern.

In the match against Unolia, forwarder Sifa Upendo from Asenath scored a goal 15 minutes in, while 20 minutes in, a Unolian player snuck the ball into the goalposts after an effort by the Patriots to try and defend our team. But just two minutes later, Johannes Bjork scored a goal. Finally, 44 minutes in, before halftime, another Unolian scored a goal, tying the match at 2-2.

After the break, it was incredibly deadlocked with both sides trying to score a goal and failing to do so. But with just five minutes to go, Sifa Upendo scored the final goal, enabling a Luziycan victory 3-2 over Unolia. Compared to baseball, where we lost to an Unolian Province 1-4, it proves that breakaway states apparently are much better at sports.

Women's Football
Our women's football team were clearly sitting on their laurels from yesterday's match against Bormeatri where they defeated them 3-2. Today's game against the St. Jame's Islands began with a goal just 9 minutes in by Margaret, then the remaining time in the half was mostly playing keep-away, until a player from St. Jame's Islands scored and drawn the match at 1-1 at the end of the half. The next half was basically the same with a tie. Extra time resulted in a loss against the St. James Islands, 1-2. The team is currently preparing for tomorrow's match.

Men's Gymnastics
We really suck at men's gymnastics. The best male gymnast in the country, Zitomir Brodszky came in 30th place, being tied with Chen Men from Namor. Those eliminated are Milivoj Mrdakovic (38), Jaropluk Orjdanic (74), Nemanja Zacharov (79), and Zoran Kulakov (89).

Men's Handball
We are practicing to ensure that our match will result in a Luziycan victory.

Men's Shooting
We did pretty poorly. Our best athlete, Svilen Landowski got 14th place, followed by Rosen Radenovic at 17th, who was the worst. We didn't even the enter the finals.

Women's shooting
Unlike Men's shooting, we got Nedelya Cisek into the finals, having qualified at 9th place. Ruzica Hlinka however did spectacularly poorly, at 17th place. Luziycans had high hopes for Cisek, hoping that we'd get a medal in shooting, but we didn't. Nedelya Cisek placed 10th, at the bottom of the pack, below even Johanna Haapaniemi.

Men's Swimming
For the 400m freestyle, Jacob Bondhaagen (a Sorbian whose ancestors were from Lower Sorbia in Geadland) fared poorly, being placed 22nd place in the qualifications. Adam Titov placed 25th.

In the 100m breaststroke, Yi Saul (from Nantai, in case if the name doesn't give it away) placed 27th, and Su Yan (also from Nantai) placed 29th.

Women's Swimming
Our womenfolk didn't fare well when it comes to the 100m butterfly. Sosna Krovseen and Emily Coutu, both from Dudyev, Sprska placed 26th and 27th respectively.

But for the 400m individual medley, Jasmine Monroe placed 4th in the qualifications and was our best hope. Serya Thuyakovich was eliminated in 27th place. Jasmine Monroe did her best, swimming very splendidly, and placed in 2nd, ahead of Jessica Royce and Ambre Torres. Interestingly, the last three place holders in the final have their first names start with the letter "J." Two of the competitors from an unknown nation. were shot dead, enabling a Luziycan silver.

In the 4x100m relay qualification, Danielle Yeruv, Silva Sterling, Tamara Kla and Elisabeth Kirani placed 9th overall and were eliminated.

Women's Tennis
In the singles, Zdiska Prohaszka scored in the sets of three rounds six points, or 18 points, compared to Caucasian Doris Denosk, who had a mere twelve. Dobyslawa Molotov against Amelia Quinnaton from True Arctica got 14-10, meaning Luziyca came out at the top in Groups G and H.

Men's Indoor Volleyball
It is the start of the indoor volleyball matches. In the match against St. Jame's Island (why do we have matches against them), the first round was 20-25, the second round was 21-25, and the third round was 19-25, a Luziycan defeat at 60-75 to the Islander Team and tied with Namor for last place. We will prevail, though.

Women's Volleyball
Beach volleyball was a sport that we are good at, albeit not as great as beach football. Miljenka Svehla and Lidka Zhivkov would play Caucasians Marina Akhanimova and Sarah Raminov, with the first round at 21-19, and the second at 21-18, resulting in a Luziycan victory of 42-37. When asked how they won, Svehla replied "with talent, skill, and finesse that these plagiarizers have none of. They are too busy stealing from everyone else to practice."

Women's Weightlifting
The weightlifting has begun with the 48 kg. The winner was to the Namorese with Ya Ruo having 197 points, Agafa Unjrebruj at 196 points, but Slavica Vilenkin at 195 points, giving this free nation our very first medal in the Esquarian Games. Seven places below lays Viara Stasov at 173 points, between Vera Wells from Masseau and Silja Makitammi from Nevanmaa.

Vilenkin has practiced very hard and diligently, with precision, talent, and lots of training and hard work. Thus, she has been able to obtain a bronze for Luziyca. It may not be a gold, and we may not hear Moya strana tis tebya yet, but we know that we will soon hear it. Already, many Luziycans have congratulated her for the bronze medal with lots of mail being sent to the Esquarian Games Village to congratulate Slavica Vilenkin.

Can we really cheer further for the Tarcticans abroad?
MCH - 1 gold

ASB - 1 silver, 1 bronze
VYV - 1 gold, 2 silver
BRI - 2 gold, 2 silver
AIN - 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze

PRN - 2 gold, 1 bronze
NDA - 1 silver, 2 bronze
MAS - 1 gold
JRU - 1 silver
FRC - 1 gold, 1 bronze
CA - 1 bronze
LUZ - 1 silver, 1 bronze
ATK - 1 bronze
TAR - None
It is Day 1 in the Summer Esquarian Games, and Tarctica did see some optimistic progress from its athletes, mostly from archery and handball. The bad news is that we have only seen, on an overall basis, a giant wave of failures as no athletes from our country have yet successfully fetched a medal. The ugly outweights the good, but there is still a large reservoir of time and chance to aim for success in future events of the Hartly Games. We will get into what our teams have done outside of Tarctica.

Men's Team Archery
In the Preliminary round, the Tarctican Men's Archery Team succeeded in shooting Atlantica out early 211 to 208, landing ourselves a spot three points above our opponent. This allows us to move to the semifinals, where we were slammed down by The Nihilistic View 220 to 214, six points greater than our score. Any chances of obtaining a Gold or Silver were shattered, and so are the chances of a Bronze as our team was defeated by Bormeatri 217 to 218 - by a different of just one point!

This may seem discouraging, but by looking at other progresses that we've made, the Men's Archery Team was probably by far the closest to a medal, not including other hopefuls in our disposal. Kudos to the players for making it so far. Michillies took the gold, as The Nihilistic View grabbed the silver and Bormeatri - well, you knew what happened.

Men's Boxing - Bantamweight and Middleweight
Our bantamweight boxer, Richard Bobinson, secured an early victory in his field by punching out Gibberan's Mel Ochoa 9 to 6. The remaining competitors are Namor, Unolia, Luziyca, East Nautarya, New Zepuha, and Ainin.

Over in the middleweight section, our Melvin Hopkins narrowly booted Garrick James of The Nihilistic View 4-3. Caucasia, Vyvland, Bormeatri, Masseau, Kastiya, East Nautarya, and North Daecon are the others that survived Day 1 middleweight, and one of them will move on to face Hopkins. Both Bobinson and Hopkins are among the several Tarcticans that our nationals are backing and trusting on.

Men's Team Sabre (Fencing)
Now here comes the first part of the giant wave of losses. Our Men's Sabre Team, composed of Augustin Robinson, Jaydan Atkins, and Samuel Bodsworth were prematurely eliminated by Vyvland's team, consisting of Jekob Sdyn, Simon Apel, and Weuden Unjreum. The Vyvlander Sabre Team went on to stamp its flag on a gold, above the silver holder of Britanno and the bronze of Ainin.

Men's Baseball
Our Baseball Team here did not disappoint our country to a notable degree. It batted four points in our favor, but our opponent Bormeatri - slamming us in Men's Archery - scored five points against us. Because of this, we are at fourt place of our Group A. This is, however, better than Luziyca (5th place and 1 for, 4 against) and Atlantica (last place and 1 for, 6 against). The current leader of Group A is West Cedarbrook, with 6 for and 1 against.

Men's and Women's Football
Like yesterday, the Tarctican team in Men's Football lost to Caucasia's parallel, but what is good was that we managed to score 1 goal unlike last time. If you think our score is disappointing, you may want to consider that of Namor's which has 0 for and a creepy 7 against. Orientalia is at first place at this time, having 3 for and [still] 0 against. The other group paramounts are Iglesiantis, Michillies, and East Nautarya.

The luckier women's team managed to keep a clean record (that is, no againsts or losses), but first position in Group C is snatched by Atlantica. In Day 1, we competed with Namor and the game resulted in no victory for us. Fortunately, the Namorese also didn't score a single goal. Britanno, East Nautarya, and Unolia became the zenith of their groups for now.

Men's Individual Gymnastics
This is a serious part of our wave of failure, and we kid you not. Of the six Tarcticans in this field, only one (Matheo Weaver) has managed to qualify for the next rounds as the others were eliminated. It's probably going to cast a temporary, yet stiff, spell of humiliation and defeat on our country.

Men's Handball
We had more success and optimism in Men's Handball than in Individual Gymnastics. Tarctica blasted Gibberan away 32 to 22 and this allows us to rise to the top of our Group D. Ainin trails behind us with 27 for and 21 against, and while that remains true New Zepuha, Francilie, and Iglesiantis occupied first in their groups.

Men's and Women's Shooting
The 10m Air Pistol can also cast a degree of disappointment on our country. Cohen Moss was one of the two Tarcticans (the other, Jaxon Hunter, was eliminated) that made it to the finals, and even there he did not succeed in aiming for a medal, instead at eight place. Kastiya's Fabian Yuriyevich Belamy shot the gold, Michael Hunt of Ainin gunned the silver, and the bronze was punctured by Tzo Jing of Namor.

It was no different in Women's 10m Air Pistol, as Shania Togedt got to the finals while Xayina Lobstrines was blown into the elimination oblivion. Identically to Moss, Togedt got eight place and nothing higher or lower. Britanno got both gold and silver (Naomi Clarke had gold, Zoe Patel had silver) and the bronze was for Philomena Clark of The Nihilistic View

Men's Swimming
The 400m Freestyle can definitely join the wave of failure. No Tarctican athletes here, from Alecsander Hobbinsen (#12), who performed best but was still eliminated, to Quincy Smith (#24), who had not aimed so well. The same went for the 100m Breaststroke, where Charles Tanatara (#26) and Zachary Novstruk (#28) were both eliminated and were two places apart. For the 400m Freestyle, Ainin's Désiré Monte swam to gold, Bormeatri's John Jones drowned silver, and Cody Sheehan of North Daecon watered away at bronze. Over in the 100m Breaststroke, Trago Wooten of Britanno had gold sunk down, Vyvland's Markys Bleyveld grabbed the silver, and bronze was captured by Jett Wilding of North Daecon.

Women's Swimming
100m Butterfly and 400m Individual Medley's results weren't any different from the above, as no Tarcticans qualified for the finals. Susan Agatis and Elena Wilson were eliminated from the former while Katherine Allesberg and Carol Robertson cannot advanced further in the latter. 4x100m Freestyle Relay was different, though, as our team containing Helen Bridger, Eva Arlanchez, Dina Loutz, and Sasha Orweston survived elimination (but came last in the finals) that befell on many other athletes of our own.

Victoria Marsh of Masseau, Unolia's Rachel Stein, and Bethany Morris of Caucasia now possessed gold, silver, and bronze respectively in the 100m Butterfly. In the 400m Individual Medley, Francilie's Ambre Torres got the gold, silver is awarded for Jasmine Monroe of Luziyca, and Jessica Royce of Atlantia Creek owns the bronze. Finally, Namor's team (Youja Kana/Peng Gladys/Tam Yang/Lang Tzu) took hold of gold, silver is within North Daecon's hands (Sara Truebridge/Martha Spruill/Helen Pemberton/John Doe), and Caucasia (Nisha Janamova/Sara Dansimov/Hara Waslinski) owns a bronze.

Men's and Women's Tennis
The Tennis Singles had seen our Ray Saunters lose to Harrison Smith of Britanno. At first, the score was a disappointing 1 to 6, but the next (4 to 6) had better outcomes. As for the women, Amelia Quinnaton failed to overcome Luziyca's Dobyslawa Molotov (both 5 to 7). Olivia Kasukouea was slammed out by Tamara Oyt of Vyvland (6 to 3, 4 to 6, 4 to 6). Tennis could be a candidate for the wave of failure.

Men's and Women's Volleyball
Vyvland may claim its victory over Kasukouea and us in Women's Tennis, but our Men's Volleyball Team defeated the Vyvlander opponents. Interestingly enough, Britanno and North Daecon now had the same points for and points against as Tarctica, and clearly this will change in a short while. In Women's Volleyball, we also defeated Vyvland thanks to the efforts of Zeena Elzinez and Bertha Archranchez. We can probably call that double retaliation against the Vyvlanders.

Women's Weightlifting
There's not much to see here other than the fact that our Hilarie Obadges Did Not Finish this field. Ya Ruo (Namor) lifted up to the gold, silver dropped onto Agafa Unjrebruj (Vyvland), and Slavica Vilenkin (Luziyca) had the bronze.

Conclusion
Day 1 proved to be a pessimist day for the Tarcticans. None of the athletes had managed to obtain medals and many were sucked into the elimination oblivion, but despite that we should all be proud that our participants had the courage to engage in a massive sporting event like the Esquarian Games. And as said earlier in the article, there is still a lot of time for us to improve, and hopefully we can turn this bitter situation into a sweet one.

I told you, our country would fail horribly in the Esquarian Games. We proceeded to waste money on this and now we see the negative consequences of not winning a single medal.

@Sean Roberts
Isn't it too early to tell if we will win a medal or not? Even if we didn't win anything, the thing we will win is the joy and fun of competing in such a giant event.

That Multiverse ad was quite awesome, in fact way too awesome. I don't think the foreigners would like it, but that's just their opinions.

Day 1: Gold!

Day 1 of the Esquarian. Games has seen Britanno shoot to the top of the medal table after gaining points in fencing, shooting and swimming, causing many surprises along the way.

Image

Today was the real beginning of the games, with ten gold medals IP for grabs as well as many more silvers and bronzes. Day 1 went brilliantly for Britanno, and we can now look at the medal table and grin, although do it quickly because Namor, Unolia or Ainin will soon kick us off that spot. Let's start with whe we did well.

Shooting
Naomi Clarke and Zoe Patel were our representatives here, but neither of them were optimistic about their chances prior to the games, and in all honesty, neither of was the country. However, they both pulled off an unimaginable performance to win both the silver and gold. Clarke told me that she was "struggling to believe" what she had done, and I guess I owe her an apology for claiming she nor her partner had a chance in my last article.

Fencing
Here we picked up a silver after we fought our way to the finals before being beaten by Vyvland at the last hurdle. On the way there we had to beat Unolia, which we did relatively comfortably, and Ainin, a victory that occurred due to a single point lead. Gareth Black later said his team's win was "beyond reality".

Swimming
We were hoping for a gold in the men's 100m breaststroke, but we expected it from the well known Kenton Jansen, not Trago Wooten. The south Candover kid who's only eighteen won an extremely close race that could have ended with any winner. Jansen, however, just missed out on the bronze after coming fourth, but he said he was "delighted" for his teammate.

Football
It was a good day for our men's team today, who crushed Francile with a 4-1 win. They climbed up to third in the group, but second place Nevanmaa and fifth place Atlantica are still to play, meaning the gap to qualification could get bigger, or we could be pushed down the table altogether. Our best hope is a draw, and then for Nevanmaa to lose their next few games. We remain top of our group in the women's sport, but morale has been lowered thanks to a goalless draw to Bormeatri.

Other Sports
In boxing, Clarence Hall and Wayne Stewart failed to get pass the first round, but nobody was very optimistic about their chances. Baseball went well, with out team beating Caucasia, we lost 27-21 in handball to Ainin, Harrison Smith beat Ray Saunters for a win in the tennis, while Jessica Eighton beat her competition from Michillies to go through to the next round. The men's indoor volleyball began with success against Chorea, but the women's beach event failed to give a victory to Britanno.

DEVELOPING STORY | Esquarian Games Catchup: Day 1 at Hartly 2014 - We Hit The Jackpot

A Very Happy Man: Jett Wilding with his hard earned bronze medal
WATERWITT, SAC-WT/HARTLY, LINACK, AININ - In Hartly today, we came in not expecting any medals from our proud athletes, but most of us were proven wrong when Jett Wilding, and the women's 4x100 metre team came out with a bronze medal for the former, while the latter came out with a silver medal. It was a surprise for many, including many sports commentators at Dalshire Television & Radio (DTR), Alsette Broadcasting Service (ABS), Chancloton Provincial Sport (CPS) and Weston Sport Service (WSS). One sport fan commented: "I didn't really expect any medals today, but the bronze and silver medals just proved me wrong!" This is the day's results:

Swimming
In the men competition, things started out with top 6 placings for both swimming events. In the Men's 400m Freestyle, Cody Sheenan managed to get into the top 6, barely managing to not get taken out of the competition. In the final however, he was just pushed out of 3rd place by John Jones of Bormeatri. Cody was said to be "very disappointed" with the result, but said "you can't have all things in life".
Edit: Cody Sheenan has won the bronze medal, after a inconsistency with the scoreboard placed Cody 4th, he has been pushed up to 3rd place due to this. John Jones on Bormeatri was pushed up to second place and the silver medal.

In a very close qualification race though, Jett Wilding managed top the qualification of the Men's 100m breaststroke, beating Miko Sangjan of Namor by .09 of a millisecond. His team-mate, Jesse Dietrich, came in 24th and was eliminated from the competition. In the final, managed to came in 3rd place and in a stunning set of events, stealing the bronze medal for Kenton Jansen of Britanno: due to the closeness of the time (1:01.63 for both swimmers), race officials decided that Jett will get the medal. Jansen was later awarded 4th place. In a post-match interview with Robert Stiles, he was "very surprised" with how the race turned out.

In the Women's division though, things didn't fare as well as it did in the men's competition. Ellie Provan and Alica Giles were placed 16th and 30th place in the 100m Butterfly and both were eliminated from the competition. In the women's 400m Individual Medley; Michelle Behrens and Tomeka Isakson placed 12th and 23rd, but were still eliminated from the running. However, our best medal placing was with the 4x100 freestyle relay, when the team, lead by Sara Truebridge, came in 2nd place, winning a silver medal, beating Caucasia's team by 2 seconds, while was beaten by Namor's team, with a time of 3:37.83.

Boxing
In Boxing, there were mixed results. Aidan McGillivray managed to beat Wayne Stewart of Britanno comfortably with a score of 6-2, while Nathan Musico narrowly lost to Kristopher Douglas of Ainin after a deadlock with a score of +8-8.

Baseball & Asoc. Football.
In Baseball, North Daecon badly lost to Gibberan with a score 2 runs to 5 runs favouring Gibberan. Most people expected to win at Asoc. football, but with a loss to New Zepuha 2-1, many are casting doubts if the National team could perform good after this lasted bump in the road. In Women's football, the women's team managed a draw with Gibberan, putting the women's team at 5th place on the ladder.

Tennis
In Women's Tennis, Sara Bowens managed to come off with a unexpected win over Mara Lalo of Iglesiantis, beating Mara by 6-3, 1-6 and 6-3. However, Nina Taffola was defeated by Terhi Virtala of Nevanmaa, by 7-5, 2-6 and 2-6. Men's tennis, however, NDBC World Sport hasn't got the results yet.

Shooting
In shooting, Owen Kaeppel and Taj Glover in the 10m Air Pistol Qualification got second-last and last place in the ranking, our worst result yet. In the Women's 10 m Air Rifle Qualification, Laura Scone managed to get 7th place, while her team-mate Mary Slapoffski was eliminated. In the final, Laura managed to secure 6th place, while Naomi Clark of Britanno took the gold medal, Silver went to Zoe Patel of Britanno, while bronze went to Philomena Clark of The Nihilistic View.

Men's Gymnastics
In Men's Individual Gymnastics, only 2 athletes out of the original 6 managed to get past the qualification, with Wilfred Stevens at 14th place, and Mark Schriver at 17th place; while Earl Martinez, Ryan Iqbal, Randy Dahlen and Gilbert Smith, at 38th, 43rd, 49th and 55th place, were eliminated from the running.

Summary of Day 1
The media response to the bronze and silver medals were ecstatic, with DTR commentator Stanley Manchester, proclaiming that "the best has yet to come for North Daecon, the stars upon the stars are looking down upon us.". While hundreds of fan mail are being sent to Jett and the Freestyle relay team. We hope that we have more success in the Esquarian Games.

Edit: When the article was first posted, Cody Sheenan was 4th place in the Men's 400m Freestyle. However, a error with the timing system prompted race officials to push him up to 3rd place and the bronze medal. This article has been changed in accordance with the ruling.

Lagging Start for Unolia
One Silver Taken Home, by Shawn Ren

Hartly I don't think people realize that Unolia, with all of it's terrorist attacks and recuperating ourselves after the loss of the Great Leader, Jarrod Thuman, that we couldn't exactly send a large delegation to the Games as we did as we hosted in the Winter. We still have a dominant showing on the team sports stage and I am faithful it will continue into the future and I still have plenty of faith that we can make it into the top five of the medal table.

Anyways, a brief highlight of Unolia's Day One.

Boxing

In a savage beat down in the Bantamweight division, The Nihilistic View's Henry Edwards was savaged by Heath Parris in a 3-12 victory. Parris was down 3-0 against Edwards going into the second round, and then came out swinging, not allowing him to grab another point. You could say that this was close ot the opposite on the Middleweight stage, as Clinton Moore was shamed 9-3 against Vyvland's Johni Unjrebruj.

Fencing

This did not turn out the way it planned. After a close victory against team Michillies, Gerald Ahtnea, Alexand Quilan and Yingu Kim were decimated by team Britanno by nine points. This is shocking for a team so heavily seeded going into the tournament. Team Britanno would later go on to win silver.

Football

On the men's side, after our rout of Namor (which is still being celebrated, mind you), Unolia lost a high scoring game to the Namorese neighbor, Luziyca. A 2-2 game leading into the half, it soon became heated when an Unolian attacker punched a Luziycan defender in the stomach. TV cameras show that the Luziycan athlete said something to the Unolian to provoke a response, but Team Luziyca says it "wasn't that bad of an insult". Luziyca won with a sudden end game goal of 3-2.

On the women's side, it was an entirely defensive game. Unolia won after a 22 minute goal against Atlantia Creek. They currently lead on a 6 Goal Average against Vyvland in second. Both teams have two wins on their belt.

Handball

The shock isn't that we won against Caucasia, who seems to forget what a Three Letter Acronym means, but the fact we only one by one goal against them. Or the fact we were down by three going into the half. Or the fact that our superstar, Aldrani Quila, only had five goals.

Pick one.

Shooting

While we're on the topic of shocks... hell, you know where I'm going with this.

Noted paragon shooter Chiang Biao either choked or had an off day yesterday. He was eliminated in 19th place, no where near the potential that he should be at right now. He refused to give a press conference, understandably.

Swimming

Our lone medalist from day one, Rachel Stein took home a silver after seeding fifth (in a tie) for the 100m Butterfly. For a nation not set to do well in swimming, we're pretty damned proud.

Tennis

Unolian Jacklyn Qing routed Brittanian (pardon for butchering that), Elizabeth Halsbey 2-0 to move onto the next round. We will have to wait and see what is next.

<Koyro> (Democratic Koyro) NSG senate is a glaring example of why no one in NSG should ever have a position of authority
The Emerald Dawn wrote:"Considering Officer Krupke was patently idiotic to charge these young men in the first place, we're dropping the charges in the interest of not wasting any more of the Judiciary's time with farcical charges brought by officers who require more training on basic legal principles."

Hartly Day 2
ImageCaucasia sucks at Baseball, shocking

Today was another great day for Caucasia in the Games- well depending on the game. Today in Mens boxing Bantamweight, Desmond Yotaman was doing well at first, but as the game went on got tired and was defeated. In Mens boxing Middlewight, Yusev Almanov defeated Luziycan boxer Dragisa Nowack 7-3. In Mens Team Sabre, the Caucasian team was doing great, defeating the NTA, and the TNV teams, However they were later defeated by Vyvland and Ainin. In Mens Baseball, the Caucasian team was defeated by the Britannon team 5-3. In Mens Football, Caucasia defeated the team of Tarctica 2-1, and overall got 2nd place in Group D Mens Football. In Women's Football, the Iglesian team was miserably defeated by the Caucasian team 2-0, and Caucasia now has first place in Group B women's Football. In a very close game of Hanball, Caucasia was beat by the Unolian team 23-24. Caucasia was eliminated from the qualifications for Mens10m Air Pistol, and was barely eliminated from the Women's 10m Air pistol qualifications, as well as from the Mens 400m Freestyle, the Mens 100m Breathstroke, and the Women's 400m individual medley. Some good news though, Caucasia has gotten bronze metals in Women's 100m Butterfly and women's 4x100mFreestyle. Caucasia was defeated by Luziyca and ASB in Tennis, and again by Luziyca in women's Volleyball. Also today Marina Yumenova got 8th place in women's 48kg weightlifting.

Opinion

Ignoring racist Nevanmaa equates to support for intolerance
Angela Fropbeuer
Image
Flying the flag of racism up high.

Giving racists like the Nevan Esquarian Games team time on our screens - and putting up no opposition to their ghastly discrimination - shows we're welcoming of their hatred.

International sporting events always fascinate me; I like to see how the whole world reacts to one single event. I was watching the NYT - Nevanmaa's state broadcaster - coverage of the opening ceremony, and something shocked me to the core. It was their blatant hate for ethnic minorities.

OK, this is nothing new within Nevanmaa. But when state broadcasters let their idiotic commentary spew out of their mouths on live TV, millions more eyes see their intolerance, and learn to live with hate. Let's just read a snippet of what was said that night:

"Nevan team is also one of the purest teams in the Games. As far as I know, we're the only nation whose team consists solely of white folks. Even our neighbouring countries like Vjaarland and Vyvland have managed to snap a few negroes from down south into their team.
They do stick out like a sore thumb.

Oh, how I love our country being bashed on live TV due to our mild tolerance of black people. If they can't tolerate us, why should we tolerate them? These two bigots would - and should - be sacked straight away in Vyvland; it goes without saying.

No Vyvlander competitor - let alone anyone of black or mixed race - should have to face a Nevan bigot in any sporting event. Think about how demoralising it is to let our men and women go and compete against someone who is fighting in the name of racism. And yet we passively let them continue.

And let's not get started on their government. It institutionalises pure hate and disrespect for anyone who isn't lily-white through no fault of their own, whether it be by segregation, rights-stripping, or even adjusting sentences for whites who kill ethnic minorities. Through NOSDO, the Vyvlander government is legitimising this persecution. But it doesn't seem like Blymont's going to change this hallowed relationship with the crotchety old racist next door.

While others I know passively say 'their loss' at the Nevan team's denial to give racial minority athletes a chance, I refuse to go along with this. Yes, maybe they'll do a little worse than otherwise, but that's hardly going to persuade Esquarium's most prominent racists to change their ways, is it? What we need is more outspokenness over the atrocious attitude of Team Nevanmaa. We need to let them know that they're attitudes are near-universally viewed as despicable by the outside world.

That's why I support a full ban on Nevanmaa competing in international sport until they lift their race laws - ambitious, I know. Nevanmaa shouldn't be proud of any achievement until they can guarantee rights for all Nevans.

- Breaking News: Hartly 2014 Summer Esquarium Games
Bormeatri Wins Two Medals on Day One!
Keith Steadings, National Sport Corespondent for Sky News

Archery: The Men's Archery Preliminary round Bormeatri competed against Orientalia, narrowly beating them out, by one point, to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals we competed against Michillies, who defeated us by a large margin. Michillies eventually won the gold while The Nihilistic View won silver, and we beat out Tarctica narrowly beating them out, by one point, for the bronze medal in the final round. After the final round one of our own reports here at Sky News was able to talk to the Bormeatrian Men's Archery team. The coach stated,
"We are quite happy with the results of the competition, and we're proud to bring home the first medal for Bormeatri. I just want to thank everyone and thank Aininian Republic for hosting these wonderful games!"

Boxing: Not much has happened in Men's boxing today except that our own Hank Jones defeated Abner Hadley (AIN), 12-9, to advance to the next round. More updates will be posted as soon as the next round is finished. The other boxers for the Middleweight class that are moving on to the next round are Yusev Almanov (CA), Johni Unjrebruj (VYV), Darryl Burton (MAS), Melvin Hopkins (TAR), Khose Saavedra (KST), Ridwan Murtada (NTA), and Aidan McGillivray (NDA).

Baseball: Men's baseball is one of Bormeatri's favorite pass times, and today our national team competed against the Tarcticain national baseball team. Neither team scored in the first two innings, but then both of the teams score one run in the third. Tarctica pulled ahead in the fourth, scoring two runs. We soon caught up, scoring one run in the fifth, and two in the sixth. In the final inning we were leading Tarctica 4-3 when one of their best players scored a home-run. Tension was high when struck out their next two hitters, and it was our turn to hit. Both of our first two hitter struck out, and it was Number 12's, Johnny Jackson, turn to bat. Johnny fouled the first two balls, and it was looking like it was going to go into the tenth inning when he drove the third ball into the stands. The game ended with a Bormian victory, 5-4. Bormeatri is sitting third right now in Group A.

Football: Not much to report here, other than that we were defeated by Michillies in Men's Football. The final score of the game was 0-1. Currently Bormeatri is tied for fourth place in Group B with The Nihilistic View, who we tied with yesterday. For Women's football we tied 0-0 with Britanno, and we're currently sitting in sixth place for Group A. Britanno is currently sitting in first, so its nice to know that are team was able to stop them from scoring.

Gymnastics: Men's Individual Gymnastics has been quite the competition. Max John, from Granite Bay, Bormeatri, was the only member of the ASB gymnastics team to move on to the next round. Max John scored 14.850 for his routine, and is currently tied for 18th place with Gang Su (ORA), and Nackler Nacks (ATL). Jeff Caldwell (AIN) was the top scorer of today, scoring 15.625.

Swimming: Swimming, is definitely Bormeatri's most loved activities, considering we're an island nation surround by crystal clear waters. In the Men's 400m Freestyle race today John Jones was able to make it through to the final round. The competition was hard but he was able to finish in second place and secure a silver medal with a time of 3:48.20. Cody Sheehan (NDA) was awarded the bronze medal. In the Women's competition Olivia Ethi placed fifth, with a time of 1:01.36. In the Individual Medley finals Ambre Torres (FRC), Jasmine Monroe (LUZ), and Jessica Royce (ATK) placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd after the eliminations.

Tennis: Not much to report other than Olivia Ethi beat out Misha Venasov (CA) in the Women's Tennis Singles. Heather Jo was beat out by Patsy Guerrero (MAS).

Volleyball: Alison Blake and Tess Fontana were beat by Chen Yu and Kuo Ji (CHO), and are currently tied for 3rd, in Group A of the Women's Beach volleyball competition, with Emily Brady and Rebecca Wilton (BRI).
