THE ROCKET REPORT

GREAT GAME FOR THOSE WHO HATE PITCHING

Tundra Falls- Evidently, the umpires only got the notice that they should call pitches the hit the corner as a strike for one game. Last night, in a match featuring nations that have a combined 5 World Baseball Classic championships, the umpires did their best to make sure both starting pitchers only threw the ball down the center of the plate. Sarah Brayton was livid, and would eventually have the same fate that Jessica Brasfield had earlier in the competition. We’ll get into that in more detail in a bit. Qazox starter Eric Shoppach (assuming) kept his cool a little better, but he too suffered the wrath of an umpiring crew that wanted to be the show. Eventually, Newmanistan pulled the game out, by the score of 10-9 as the Empire’s record book for runs allowed continues to be re-written. The 9 runs scored by Qazox thru 9 innings were the most a Newmanistan had ever given up. And didn’t it seem like we already said that one already during this Classic?

The umpiring crew targeted Shoppach first. After he retired Stacie Meadows on a ground out, he walked Danielle Scott, with the 2-2 pitch clearly hitting the inside corner. Scott should have been gone, but on the pitch that followed, she was put on base. A pair of singles by Meghan Butler and Natalie “The Better” Monroe made it 1-0 in favor of the home team. Shoppach did catch a break though to get out of the inning as Adele Grahame made a nice catch on a liner, and since the hit and run was on, easily doubled up Butler by simply stepping on the bag. The Rockets though, were able to put a couple more on the board in the second inning. Jessica Sorenson had singled with one away and advanced on a sacrifice, but then Stacie Meadows was walked. Again, perhaps a questionable call on the 3-2 pitch. The next batter, Danielle Scott drove them both in by ripping a double off the left field wall to make it 3-0. Shoppach was aggravated with the umpire and had some words with him after eventually getting out of the inning.

Up to this point, Sarah Brayton had a smooth start, only allowing one baserunner through three, but then things fell apart. Jason Tyson flew out to left to start the inning, but then the Pheonix were able to load the bases. A pair of singles by Dyana Garski and Chad Savoy followed by a walk to George Rabbinski set the Pheonix up in good position, but Brayton was not happy about not getting a called strike three on a 1-2 pitch that replays clearly showed hitting the outside corner. Diane Riggles then tied the game up with one swing of the bat, a double down the right field line, and Brayton was flipping out at the umpire. She had Riggles 0-2, but on two clear strikes, did not get the call. Distracted, she got a bit sloppy, and served up a fat one to Grant Calvin, who singled in Riggles to give Qazox the 4-3 lead. Adele Graham singled to put runners on first and second, and a sacrifice from Shoppach moved them over. Then came the play. Brayton had Mike Stiller 1-2 and clearly struck him out on a curve over the corner, but didn’t get the call. Again, same pitch, didn’t get the call. Next pitch, she went in a little bit to get more of the plate, and Stiller smacked it into the right centerfield gap to bring in the runners and make it 6-3. And then, we saw a very mad Sarah Brayton. She slammed her glove to the mound and charged the umpire, and yelled as loud as she could. We could hear it up here in press box, but her comments are not suitable to print due to explicit language. She carried on for a few minutes after she was ejected, and the Tundra Falls faithful began to throw things on the field, causing an additional 15 minutes. Coach Christina Sanders went out to plead her pitchers case as well, and it ended up in her also getting tossed; this being now the second time in three games. The delay could have helped cool Qazox down, but even the reliever, Cassie Herrick, had words with the umpire before she began. “He only allowed me six warmup pitches once I took the mound,” she says in case people wondered what got her going. She did get the Rockets out of the jam, and went on to pitch three strong innings.

The Rockets were able to bounce back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-5, and this time Eric Shoppach got himself tossed. The man behind the plate was consistently horrendous all game long, and Shoppach also found himself on the wrong end of the stick when he appeared to get out of a bases loaded jam. Newmanistan had loaded the bases thanks to two singles (from Kristen Wheeler and Courtney Weinman), and a walk to Rachel Cuyler with two away. He appeared to strike Jessica Sorenson out on a slider over the corner, but Jessica, having caught Brayton, knew how inconsistent the umpire was being and laid off a pitch she probably would hacked at. It should have been strike three, but was instead ball three. On the next pitch, Jessica singled up the middle, driving in the two runs. Once out of the inning Shoppach approached the umpire and also argued and got himself tossed. Shoppach received a standing ovation from the fans in Tundra Falls, and they were not doing so sarcastically, but instead seemed to applaud the fact that the umpire had to hear another player scream at him. Qazox manager David Dell also argued. (OOC: Don’t want to go over your permission request so I’ll leave it there if you want him tossed or not too).

Ambidextrous reliever Ryan Batiste came in for the fifth inning, but his ability to pitch from both sides of the rubber did not confuse the ladies in the sky blue and white. Stacie Meadows led the inning off with a infield single, and stole a pair of bases, and then was brought in a sac fly by Danielle Scott that tied up the score. Batiste was able to get Meghan Butler to line out sharply to first, but then got himself into trouble, allowing consecutive singles to Natalie Monroe and Kristen Wheeler. Courtney Weinman then came up and doubled to right to score the runners and put Newmanistan back in front 8-6. Qazox tried to keep Batiste in for another inning, but he would be victimized again in the 6th as Stacie Meadows hit a 2-out RBI single to score Jessica Sorenson who didn’t even attempt a swing while she was the plate, and walked. It looked like Newmanistan started to get control of the game, and Erica Darby was brought in to relieve Cassie Herrick, who had been masterful. But Darby would struggle, walking the leadoff batter Jason Tyson, and then later surrendering an RBI double to Chad Savoy. The Pheonix closed to within one an a Rabbinski single, but Darby did get out of the inning with the lead still intact at 9-8. Kristen Collins came in to get the save, but an Adele Grahame double with two away signalled trouble. Pinch hitter Juanita Sanchez tied the game with an RBI single.

Then the fun started, and strangely the umpire decided that he would give the pitchers the corner again. Rockets batters found out the hard way when they were up, but Michelle Harrison, who entered the game in the 10th inning, made the most of it. Michelle would pitch the final four innings of the ballgame, and end up getting the win. That was possible thanks to the big hit from Rachel Cuyler, a two-out RBI double that scored Kristen Wheeler, who had singled earlier in the inning. Harrison finished off Qazox in the bottom of the 13th, and overall, only allowed one base runner (a Riggles single) in her four innings of work. This wild affair will conclude the first half of qualifying, and Newmanistan is a strong 4-1. The three game homestand continues tomorrow against Virabia, and on the hill for Newmanistan will be 20-year old Brittany Castelli, who will make her WBC debut. When asked if she was excited to make this start, Brittany summed up all of our thoughts very well, “I was more excited when I thought umpires were going to call what should be a strike, a strike.”

(OOC: That’s right: I just RP’d a 10-9 game and didn’t have single HR in it!)

LIVEBLAG: Quintessence of Dust @ Tarrentum
Posted by MetaNarrativesFTL

I'm here at Imperium Stadium in Napoliroma, Tarrentum, and it's a beautiful evening. Warm sun fills the ground, and a boisterous home crowd are generating more noise than the Raptors Ultras on "Free Beer For Poststructuralists Night". With Quintessence of Dust's team having won against the Zebras yesterday and the Falcons dropping a game to Brewdomia last night, things are getting very crowded at the top in Group B. Looking at the CUTOFFS wire I see results coming in from Barnettsville and Zwangzug that mean if the home team win tonight, they go clear at the top and Quintessence of Dust sinks to fourth; if we win, it'll be a four-way tie.

Other games today saw a shock loss for the Nordics to give Toiletdonia a surprise #1 seeding at the halfway stage as the only undefeated team. Vephrall finally ended Western Cuba's supremacy, and it seems like those Yaforites still haven't got their names printed on their shirts. We were so looking forward to seeing Ladakh and Guzman play. Qazox and Newmanistan still inseparable after nine innings, we'll bring you that result as soon as we get it.

Kunika Okamoto on the mound tonight, and Romeo Vesparian for the Falcons, after the tragic death of Michael Grastiona. Vesparian's profile suggests it was a close run thing leaving him out of the rotation in the first place, so plenty of challenges for the Quodite lineup - which sees one change as Radosav Grubenšek returns to the starting spot in place of Hannes Huuskonen.

The now traditional daily shuffle of the batting lineup - complete with the now traditional pronouncements by team manager Jun Zhou that "batting lineup doesn't matter anyway". Forget Jurgen Barthes's four home runs in four games or Masami Tamagotchi going undefeated through 15 games - I'm beginning to think our team's most impressive "streak" will be when we play two consecutive games with the same batting order. Today we have: Momoko Koumura at second base, the three outfielders Natalia Kivistö, Masami Tamagotchi, and Emily Sanderson, first basewoman Anna Alaja, Amanda at third, Radosav, The Brick in the pitcher's spot and Huang Li at shortstop.

T1.0 Would be hotter in here, I think, but there's a cooling breeze coming in from left. The announcer reading out the teams, but I think that she's been taking advantage of the subsidised alcohol sales here in Napoliroma, as she's only halfway through after ten minutes, eight of them spent talking about what she likes about Ferdini Zappataro's eyes. Now she's apologising, telling us she never normally gets this drunk and loves us all very, very much. Sounds like she's being wrestled away from the microphone by members of the National Press Committee.

And we're away! Vesparian throwing a sluggish fastball past Koumura, who watches it for a strike. Having a quieter Classic this time, Momoko, but still batting well, with a .467 on base average. Just the one extra base hit, a triple, and leads the team in walks. That looked like a slider, and it's ripped down the third base line. Gradoni will get to it, and Koumura's easily into first for a single to leadoff.

Strike, and Momoko is going, huge slide, and it was pretty difficult to see what happened amid that big cloud of infield sand. Safe at second is the ruling!

Natalia checks her swing again, and it's a ball. Ball. Ball, and a sharp throw to third, but Momoko didn't move. Takes a swing in the zone, and that'll be a little looper to short - easily snagged by Zappataro.

T1.1 Masami with a drive down the third base line on her first pitch. So Masami and Momoko on the corners, one out, Emily Sanderson, who yesterday became Quintessence of Dust's all-time WBC home run leader, up to bat.

High strike and Masami is gunning for second, and Momoko sets off again for home! She delayed her run till Utteroni was in motion to throw to second, and there's a mass of confusion at home plate as the throw is returned, and the ruling is safe! For the second time in her career, the nippy (not like that) second basewoman has managed a steal of home. The other runner in motion obviously helping a great deal, Utteroni absolutely furious with the home plate umpire, and Momoko getting up extremely slowly from the collision. I'm not sure if she took a blow coming in, sometimes an elbow to the ribs can wind a player, and she ducks out of a few high fives and shoulder pats from her benchmates, looking very groggy still. But the important stat: Quintessence of Dust 1, Tarrentum 0.
...
Strike on the corner, and this time it's Emily who gives the umpire an earful. Utteroni looking rather smug this time. Vesparian gets the K.
...
T1.2 Masami going for third. What is going on here!? Well, not a lot. Not sure if Vesparian knew she was going but Utteroni took the pitch in plenty of time and made the throw, and Gradoni gets the tag to end the inning. And if those three successful steals showed the value of good baserunning, that unsuccessful certainly showed the value of good catching.

B1.0 The Falcons off to bad start, then, but plenty of time to reply. Okamoto with his first pitch as a starter - he was in the non-gender-specific-bovine-pen in two previous Classics. Hard slider, and Zappataro takes a cut at it, and it flies over Amanda's head into left field, and Emily will chase it down into the corner, Zappataro haring round the bases, and slides into second ahead of the throw for a leadoff double.

Well, this is looking very bad. After taking that throw Momoko Koumura made no real effort to get in ahead of Zappataro, and she is, very slowly, walking off. That's her ballgame. Obviously injured somehow in the collision at home. She has never been considered a natural baserunner really, but her stolen base totals have always been impressive, and that one obviously taking too much out of her. So Jun Zhou's intention of manufacturing a first inning run has had unforeseen consequences, and Long Lai will come out to cover second base.

At this point, I'd like to argue, once again, that our bench is woefully understacked. We have only one middle infield reserve, but three outfield reserves. Johannes Heikelä the obvious omission, and this, now, could very well be a game that makes us pay for that.
...
Tags a groundball towards Amanda for the first out.

B1.1 Ianello checks his swing, and Zappataro flies down the tracks! Radosav's throw to Amanda is...in time! She had to reach over a little, but some smart footwork to get back for the tag, and Tiberius Wavi hurls his cap to the ground for the third time this game. Something tells me it's going to end up pretty dusty if this keeps up.

B1.2 Single for Ianello, wouldn't have scored Zappataro from second anyway, but he is safe at first as Kunika takes the throw from Anna.

Utteroni to bat. Ball. High strike. Ball, and Ianello sets off! They're going to have to nail down the bases here. This time Radosav isn't in time, and Ianello takes second!

Ball. Swings, and it's a spiralling high flyball, but Natalia looks like she's underneath it, and takes the catch to the end the inning and deny a tying run.

T2.1 Amanda swinging at her first pitch but dropped her hands a little at the last moment, and that's going to drop in shallow rightfield...unbelievable play by Puloni! Lunging catch, and then his momentum made him basically roll a somersault, but he clings onto the ball.

B2.1 Ball. Ball, for a walk! Well, he's thrown nine consecutive pitches out of the zone to put two runners on base, interrupted only by a mistaken swing from Puloni that sent an easy fly to Emily. Radar trouble for The Brick.

Gradoni to bat with runners on. Ball. Ball. Another conference on the mound. Finally throws a strike. Fouled off, and seemingly some direction back to Kunika's pitching. Foul. Takes a cut at that one, but Gradoni was way behind it and it sprays out to Amanda, who steps on third and throws to first for the double play.

T3.2 So up to bat now is Long Lai. As a reminder, Momoko Koumura originally in the leadoff spot, but seemed to injure herself in the first inning. No word yet on what exactly is wrong.
...
Tags a grounder, and Zapparato will be there ahead of Gradoni and make the play.

B3.0 Norian Ionian swishes a leadoff double way over Emily's head in left, and she'll have to go all the way to the track for that. An excellent contact by Ionian, might have been a triple for one of the speedier Falcons.

Bunt by Vesparian, but he overcooked it a bit and Anna will get there in time. Not good enough to advance Ionian to third, and he doesn't risk it. Not taking many pitches, so far the Falcons, but the pitch count still creeping up because Kunika has had such trouble finding the zone.

B3.1 Ball. Ball, and that's way too low. To the backstop for Radosav. Wild pitch! So Ionian advances to third anyway, and the catcher trying to do his best to settle Kunika down. Amanda from third base joins in the conversation, and although he hasn't surrendered any runs yet, he's giving the Falcon offence much too much in the way of the count.
...
Well, I walked into that one, didn't I? Now he's surrendered some runs, as Zappataro with his second double, off the fence and still bobbling in the outfield for Masami, drives in Ionian. The Falcons take the score level, Wally the Win Expectancy Worm takes a leap, and Jun Zhou looks like he needs to take an aspirin. Who knows what Kunika Okamoto's been taking?

B3.2 Weak groundball, and Long Lai will be called on to make his first play, and the inning. 1-1 after 3.

T4.1 And Emily hitting straight to Nicolai Rioi, who only has to step onto first. Newmanistan finally victorious, by the way, on an RBI double.

T5.2 Strike on the corner. Swings at this one, and ripped! Puloni going all the way back but it's over his head, and out of here! Natalia Kivistö is making an impression we haven't seen since the early days of Emily Sanderson, and has hammered her third home run of WBC15, 399 feet into rightfield! Quintessence of Dust reclaim the lead, and the fans at Imperium Stadium sounding a little more nervous in their wild, unabashed drunkenness now.

B5.0 Zappataro, who has two doubles already, to leadoff in reply. Strike. Ball. Ball. Swinging strike. Hits the cover off that one, but very high, and it'll go straight down Emily's throat in leftfield.

T6.2 Things getting quiet here. It's not going to turn into a slugfest here, one suspects, but with Natalia once more at the plate, who knows? Ball. Strike, and Natalia doesn't agree. Ball, and Vesparian doesn't agree. Fouled to the backstop. Huge rip down the rightfield line, but it's going to curve foul...and it misses the pole by ten feet. Glancing foul. Good contact, but it'll only go so far as Ianello's glove, to end the top of the sixth.

B6.1 Vallena lines it into right, and she'll get there for a single. News from the Rockets-Pheonix game is of yet more complaints about shrinking strike zones. One rather suspects until they start posting consecutive shutout wins, the Rockets won't be happy.

T7.0 And another disappointing inning for Tarrentum, as Gradoni strikes out swinging to leave Vallena on. Trailing by a run, and it's getting very, very tense, as the floodlights glare ever brighter in the evening dusk. Out to bat is Masami, who is certainly proving the find of the tournament so far.
...
And her form continues, ripping one into left and scurrying onto first for a single. Emily to bat. Ball. Ball. Ball. Strike, and Emily informs the umpire where he can stick that call. (Up his bottom, in case you're wondering.) Takes a cut, and could be a double play. Vallena takes it, onto first, steps out of the slide, and throw to first is good! Superb glovework by Vallena at second to eliminate perhaps the two quickest players on the team in one fell swoop.

B7.0 Looks like it will be Toebacca, who won the Mittens-on-a-String as best overall fielder, to fill in at third base with his rather large presence. Ball. And another good hit for Ionian, this time out to right centre, and it looks like being another double. This could be a very big chance for the Falcons. And they will pinch hit now for Vesparian, who pitched seven very creditable innings of work.

High flyball to short right, and Natalia will be in to take the catch. One down.

B7.2 No more chance of a sacrifice now, so they need a hit. Rioi takes the pitch, for a ball. Swings at it, and it'll be a grounder to second and the snap throw from Long is in time.

T8.0 Ederi Sallamo to pitch. At 2-1 this game is still really too tight to call. Long digs at the low pitch and will groundout to second.

T8.1 Strike. Ball. Strike. Fouled off nicely by Natalia. Ball. Ball. Another high foul ball. And a walk! Sallamo yields a base on eight pitches.

Strike. Foul. Inside pitch to ward Masami off the plate. Ball. Foul, and Sallamo is drifting. That's better, but so is the contact! Double down the first base line, Masami into second, Natalia going to home from first, and the relay throw is late! A run to take Quintessence of Dust up to 3-1, and Wally the Win Expectancy Worm really woke up there. A big hit for Masami, who's now 3 for 4, and finds herself on second with one out.

Interestingly, we saw...four stolen bases and two caught stealings in the first innings, and we've seen zero since then. Emily Sanderson to the plate.

And straight off again, as they are intentionally walking her. So up to bat is Anna, hitting poorly so far this Classic. Runners on first and second, a possible double steal threat, and the first pitch is a pitchout! But Masami didn't move. Ball. Ball. Called a strike by a whisker. This time she swings, and it could be a double play - Zappataro, to Vallena, to Rioi, over and out.

B8.0 Bottom of the eighth, and a 3-1 lead. Kunika to be taken out, he's pitched well enough so far. Amazingly he only gave two walks - it seemed like more - but he threw only 55 of 92 pitches as strikes, and just the one K. Not on hot form today, and that low pitch count showing the Falcons willing to swing early. To pitch relief will be Chikafuji, who threw a couple of innings yesterday as well.

Ianello, with another hit. He's had three in this game, but this time no extra bases as Huang holds him at first. And it's straight out for Akihito! Ha, threw three pitches, and the third wasn't good enough, so that's his game. Olof Bergmann in to pitch. Ball to Utteroni. Strike, and it's high off his bat into foul territory, but Natalia manages to get there in time, and pull it down for the flyout.

B8.1 Herbie the Herbster on now. Jun must be confident, as he's cycling through his relievers and a rally now might leave him short in extra innings. Still, that'll help, as Vallena hits a weak grounder to Toebacca, who will throw for the forceout at second.

B8.2 Broken bat grounder up the middle, Anna dashes to it as The Herbster moves to cover first, and he will take the throw in time to end the inning. So the eighth sees a big run for Quintessence of Dust, and no reply for Tarrentum.

T9.2 And Sakiko swishes at an 0-2 count, just got a piece of it but the popup will be easily taken for Rioi to end the ninth. Good shutdown pitching by Francisco Azzri. The question now: will a two run lead be enough?

B9.0 Mazio Mizokuchi to enter, Quintessence of Dust's fifth pitcher of the game. Gradoni, Ionian and - we assume - a pinch hitter to bat.

Fastball touching 98 on the dial for a swinging strike. Called strike, that's even faster. So is that, but it's also lower and a ball. Cutter, still in the high 90s, and I'm not sure how much Gradoni knew about it but he got a bit of bat on it to send it foul. 99 mph on that one, ball. Ha, and an 81 mph change gets Gradoni to swing and miss, he had time to swing twice by the look of it.

B9.1 Ionian, definitely the best hitter today for the Falcons. The tension palpable as Mizokuchi hurls another burning fastball, and Ionian lets fly. It is going back, back, to right centre, Masami running after it in desperation, and she has her glove up as she crashes into the centrefield fence...comes up with it! Fantastic running catch by Masami Tamagotchi, and Ionian denied what would have been at least a double, possibly a home run - I can't quite tell from the replay trajectory. Actually, it looks like it would have cleared the wall. Oh, what a play!

B9.2 And as the pinch hitter Rian Fesserallia comes up, haha, a different instant replay shows, this time just showing Mizokuchi. Releasing the pitch, watching as it flies over his head, and squatting down on his haunches in frustration. Grim faced until at the last moment he smiles reluctantly. But it was the fielder who got that out, and he knows he very nearly surrendered a home run that would have completely revitalised this Falcons' offence.

Now Fesserallia. Ball. Strike. Ball. Strike. Ball. And if this is sounding monotonous, believe me, it's not. Another bat-shredding cutter, and Radosav can throw to first, for Anna to take - and that's the game! Quodite players stream out onto the pitch, the Falcons head back to their dugout in frustration.
...
I read yesterday's New Cleethorpes Enquirer mentioning how it is often the close victories, not the big, perfect wins that give the most cheer, and today's was certainly that. Close throughout, but at the end the Falcons couldn't quite close the gap. A bizarre basestealing frenzy at the start, a homerun from Natalia, and she scored again on a Masami Tamagotchi double; Kunika Okamoto survived obvious early nervous, some tight relief pitching, and a fantastic play in centre.
...
Fans drifting out, and as I pack up my things, no word yet on the injury to Momoko Koumura.

Toiletdonia produced a really shock when they managed to beat Tocrowkia 10-5 putting them really close to qualifying. Toiletdonia had a bad first few innings not scoring a run. The 4th innings was a really a great one. Moss scored a home run Jancotta managed 2 home runs as well even though he's a pitcher! Spurone led well and scored 3 RBI. The rest of the game was hard for both teams with both of them struggling. Toiletdonia are now unbeaten halfway through the season and look set for the next round after causing many shock results. They did really well for a team that was arrested last game for pickpocketing children. They then were found innocent so that's okay.

Spurone: Hooray were great!

Jancotta: Kiss our backsides Undeadzombiee!

Spurone: And everyone else!

Moss: We've not qualified yet guys so don't get too excited. But still... YES!!!!!!!!!!! WE RULE LET'S DRINK!

Moss brings out 10 cegs of beer and 2 cegs of rum.

Spurone: Wahoo booze!

Jancotta: I'm going to knock myself out and then I'm going to drink so much I burst into flames!

Moss: Well we do have a game tomorrow so I'm only going to make myself fall to the ground and vomit.

Spurone: Same here!

6 hours later of boozing and drinking.

Spurone: Hey guys lets *BURP* go to *HICK* training *HICK*

Moss: Okay d00d *vomits*

Jancotta: Yeah let *BURP* do *HICK* that yeah *BURP*

Moss: YEAH!

Later at training.

Coach: Hey you guys!

Jancotta: Hey *BURP* coach yeah *HICK*.

Coach: Okay time for you breathalyser test.

Coach checks everyone.

Moss: How *BURP* are we d00d?

Coach: Not as drunk as you usually are. I don't know I'm just a chicken and your all having a vision in a ditch!

Moss: Fair dibs.

When the plane landed at Woodstock International Jetport following Sarzonia's away victory over Secristan, Khalil Dennis stepped down from the stairs leading out of the aircraft with the look of a man who had a lot on his mind.

It was a look that was surprisingly absent during the run up to his coming out as gay. Then, he felt some nerves about revealing that personal side of himself to his team, but the reception he received from his charges was positive. The only "negative" there was a comment from a couple of players who felt "hurt" he didn't feel comfortable with revealing that to them.

However, Dennis will tell you the situation involving John Morgan's expulsion from the national team was worse than anything he'd previously had to deal with in his tenure as Sarzonia's manager.

"I'm really not sure what to do, to be honest," Dennis said as he convened his coaching staff in his office. None of the players were present. The former Stars hurler sat outside the office, waiting as Traci kept watch.

Yancey sighed. "Freddy says he wants Morgan back on the team. He says the team wants him back." The other coaches looked closely at hitting coach Hank Everly. He'd only recently retired as a player, so he still had his finger on the team's pulse.

"They do want him back," he said. "If I know Freddy, he's going to let bygones be bygones as long as Morgan's willing to accept consequences for his actions."

"But the real question is, boss," third base coach Lyle Menifee said, "what do you want?"

Now the expectant looks focused squarely on the Delaclav-born former pitcher and current Stars manager. They knew he'd set the tone. They knew if he didn't at least consider the players' views, he'd likely lose the team. But they also knew Morgan's transgression was too grave to ignore.

"Bring John in," Dennis said. "I want him to talk to us so we can get a reading on him." Simply nodding his agreement, Yancey stood up and walked toward the door. He opened it and saw Traci look up at him.

"Traci? Send him in."

"Sure. Mr. Morgan?"

Morgan stood up and walked deliberately toward the door. He knew his fate would be sealed behind the door once it shut. He walked in and heard the door close hard.

"Sorry 'bout that," Dennis said. "Door's been acting up lately. Have a seat." He motioned toward an empty chair directly across from him in the office. Morgan walked toward it and sat down slowly.

"John," Dennis said. "Talk to us."

Morgan drew in his breath and exhaled slowly. "Skip," he said. "Coach Yancey, and everyone, I'm really sorry about what I did. I was so frustrated and so pissed about giving up all those runs."

"What did you and Fred talk about?" Menifee asked.

"We talked about what happened. I apologised to him. He said he forgives me, but I don't know if I can forgive myself."

"We've been discussing this situation," Everly said. "And we've been talking things over with the players. Khalil?"

"We've decided to commute your expulsion from the team and make it a seven-match suspension," Dennis said finally. You would receive credit for time already served, so you have four matches remaining in your penalty.

"I hope you take the lessons of this experience to heart as you go on through life." Dennis looked at his pitcher. "I don't like having to do this, but you really disappointed me."

Morgan closed his eyes and lowered his head. He had feelings of regret, sadness and relief washing over him as he processed what he was being told. He knew he'd nearly destroyed his career. Now he was getting what amounted to one chance to make things right.

"Thank you," Morgan said. "I can't say that enough. Thank you."

"You can say it best by applying the lessons of these past few days," Dennis said. "You may leave."

Morgan walked out of the office and back into his life as a baseball pitcher. He knew he'd have some opposition from one or two players. But he also knew that he'd have a chance to win them back over. And that was something no multi-million dollar contract could buy.

LOSS:
Sven Grewe (0-1)
HRs:
Johnny Stryker 1 (3), Kevin Monroe 1 (2)

In the ugliest defeat in recent memory, the Nordics lost 10-5 to an unranked nation coming in. The game started off well for the Nordics when Johnny Stryker stroked a one-out two run jack in the 1st, and Kathrin Jordan drove in a run on an RBI single in the 3rd. But things came undone for the team in the 4th. A routine grounder to Michael Hammer was booted, and the runner reached 11st safely. This was an omen of things to come, unfortunately. The next hitter lined one to Jill Haviland who also flubbed on picking it up. Things got ugly quickly after that as the opposing pitcher, Jancotta, got a hold of one and lined it over the wall for a three-run jack. Another groundball was booted, this time by Johnny Stryker. An RBI double in the gap was the result of this one. And then another player came to the plate, and lined one toward third.

What happened? You guessed it! Kitten Dyfuse never got a good grip on it and she ended up dropping the ball in her throwing motion. When the inning finally ended, all four of the infielders hung their heads in shame. "There is no excuse for what you saw out there tonight." Stryker said. "I've seen little leaguers with better gloves than we had." Grewe was chased an inning later when she gave up another longball. After the play, Kevin Monroe was also charged with a passed ball when he botched a Mercedes Gaunt fastball. The Nordics gave a valiant effort in trying to come back, but it wasn't happening.

"We deserved to lose this game and that's all there is to it. Winning teams don't commit 4 errors and a passed ball, hopefully this will shake us up a bit." Paul Rudolf remarked about the game.

"Roderick, I've got an e-mail here from Diane in Marsey."

"You've got an e-mail here? That's great, it wouldn't do us a lot of good if you had an e-mail on your computer back home."

"I do try to be on top of things."

"Taken for a ball, one and oh the count."

"Diane says that Marsey's team, the Camels, almost became affiliates of the Grey Socks."

"Which ones?"

"The ones in Bassabook."

"Swung on and missed, one and one."

"But anyway, the deal fell through, so the Camels stayed independent."

"Have we heard of any Camels?"

"We the researchers, or we in general?"

"The latter. This one will be driven deep, left fielder doesn't get it. Scircle scores easily, Kersten will come in too. 5-0 Zwangzug after Pratt's double."

"Um. Not sure."

"So anyhow, that brings up Benjamin Mercer."

"Ninth batter of the inning--"

"Half-inning, really. He'll be hoping we can bat around."

"Why does the same guy have to come up twice to make it be batting around? Shouldn't it just be sending up all nine batters?"

"Um...no?"

"Just asking."

"Taken for a strike, oh and one."

"Mercer grounded to second in the first inning."

"This'll be a changeup, caught him looking. Oh and two."

"Impressed internationally with the Flash, pity we don't play Liventia."

"The pitch...deep but shouldn't carry. Right fielder settles under it, makes the catch..."

"...going to have to go with the fastball here behind in the count."

"We'll see. Stroked to left, charging Pratt won't get it. The third single in a row puts Kalasion on the board..."

Tarrentum Falcons Sporting News

Falcons Rebound with Win at Home

Napoliroma, Tarrentum, Tarrentum – Both Giani and I would like to apologize for not posting a response. It seems that waking up with a killer hangover, and your colleague, don’t make for a good day. We’ll be more diligent going forward. I mean, if we don’t, our contracts will be terminated.

After the tough loss to the Qodites, mixed in with a bit of [censored by Tarrentum National Press Committee], tends to lead a team down the wrong path. I think it’s safe to say that the Valerio Utteroni experiment at the international level is finally over and Antoni Favella has come into his own. Let’s take an in-depth look at the game against Kalasion.

Brodi Jacobo started on the mound against Kalasion for the second time, as Wavi’s rotation is only five men, excuse me, five players, deep. Jacobo had the right stuff early and often.

The night started with a 1-2-3 inning for Jacobo and the Falcons as he struck out two Kalasion batters. I think I might file a formal complaint with the WBC board to see if we can’t mandate nations to 1)Release their player’s names; 2)Sew last names on uniforms. Well, I can hope…
Back to the bottom of the first where Zappa’s hit streak continued with a legged-out double to centerfield. Rioi came to bat and crushed a single through the infield, moving Zappa to third. It looked as though Zappa was going to make it home but he tripped rounding third and just got back to the base under the alert throw from the Kalasion cut-off man. Ianello was sat down on strikes and then Puloni hit a line drive out to the shortstop to bring the out total to two. With Vallena up, her hitting prowess shone through once again as she hit a beautiful, not nearly beautiful as herself, shot which dropped in front of the right fielder, scoring Zappa and netting a single. Favella then came up and also hit a skittering single through the infield which was quickly gobbled up by the Kalasion centerfielder to hold Rioi at third. With the bases loaded, Gradoni hit into a ground ball out with the third baseman stepping on the bag to get the force out and end the inning.

Jacobo saw the Kalasion’s bring the score level in the top of the second. He struck out the Kalasion’s clean-up hitter, then caused the next batter to fly out to Puloni. However, seeing that the Kalasion team had already faced Jacobo and knew his out pitch was the knucklecurve, the next batter sat on it and jacked a solo homerun into the outfield stands to tie up the game. The fans, mostly sober at this time, chanted for the ball to be thrown back, it was…all the way to Vallena at second base. I hear that Wavi is working with the security crew of the stadium to see if they can figure out who threw it…a possible contract in the ASMiL waiting to happen? Jacobo settled down again and induced a ground ball to Vallena, who scooped it up and dished it to Rioi at first to end their frame. The Falcons responded by getting two hits (Ionian and Rioi) but no runs in the bottom of the second.

With the score still tied, Jacobo seemed to be losing his touch early in the game. He gave up a first pitch double to the lead-off batter for the Kalasion Nationals to start the third. The next batter promptly swung and hit a deep sac fly to Ionian, advancing the runner to third. With one on and one out, Jacobo brought a full count against the next Kalasion hitter, who hit a chopper through the infield which just bounced over Vallena’s outstretched hand to score the runner on third and give the Kalasion’s the lead. After a brief conference with Favella, Jacobo settled down, for the night it would turn out, and induced a ground ball double play to end the inning. But the damage had been done and the Kalasion’s were up 2-1. All hope, it seemed at the time, had been lost and the Falcons looked to be on their way to another lost game. Cesare Puloni led off the bottom of the third by hitting a blooper to left field. Vallena and Favella then hit two fly ball outs, on both Puloni was unable to advance to second. He was helped out by Gradoni who hit a ball through the infield. With two on and two out, the Kalasion pitcher reared back and struck out Ionian on four pitches.

Ionian stood in the batters box for a couple of seconds, then slammed his bat onto the plate and began jawing off to the catcher, who had, I assume (we still don’t know), said something about Ionian’s At Bat as he was walking towards the dugout. Ionian followed him, bat in hand, when the umpire caught up with him. With Galahad Asanti, Falcons third base coach, and Tiberius Wavi running to help calm the situation, Ionian got chest to chest with the WBC umpire and attempted to see who could reach the highest decibel level with their opinions on the issue. The Kalasion catcher meanwhile, stood and watched until Asanti brushed by him running to help ease the situation. On instinct, the catcher shoved Asanti to the ground. Well, it doesn’t take an Apollonian quantum physicist to figure out what happened next. Both benches cleared and enveloped Ionian, Wavi, the fallen Asanti, the umpire and the Kalasion catcher. A couple shoving matches were started but it seemed as though most of the players were attempting to stop the shoving from escalating. Soon trash from the stands began to rain down on the Kalasion’s and all of the players finally stopped. Ionian was ejected along with [INSERT NAME HERE], the Kalasion catcher.

Norian Ionian was replaced in the lineup by the Gratia Warhounds outfielder Rian “The Hammer” Fesserallia, whose long ball has been amazing to watch during the ASML. However, it’s only been amazing because Fesserallia can hit a homerun for ten straight games, then go 50 without so much as getting an extra base hit. In the end, it was the right move…also the only move as the Falcons have no other true outfielders on the roster.

The bench clearing brawl seemed to invigorate the Falcons. Jacobo struck out the side in the top of the fourth with a change in his pitching order. While many suspected the knucklecurve late in the at bat, Jacobo moved it up to the beginning of the count, then the middle, then back to the beginning…which utterly confused the Kalasion hitters who were expecting it to be his “knock-out” pitch. Jacobo led off the bottom of the fourth by reaching base with a quick shot through the first and second basemen. Zappa then brought some force to bear on the ball and hit a huge homerun to dead center to bring the score back into the Falcons favor at 3-2. Rioi then flew out on an amazing diving catch by the Kalasion centerfielder but the Tarrentum bats just wouldn’t remain silent. Ianello hit a pitch through the gap in right field for a double. Puloni then squeaked a single through the infield, which held up Ianello at second. With two on, Vallena reached out and barely made contact with a 0-2 ball out of the zone. It was good contact though as it looped over the shortstops head for a single to load the bases. With a Kalasion reliever coming out Favella grounded into the odd 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Jacobo looked strong during the fifth inning, giving up one hit but struck out another two Kalasion batters. The new reliever for the Kalasion also found similar success in the bottom half of the inning. After getting an out to start the inning, Fesserallia was able to crush a double to get on base. Jacobo was unable to provide any help as he was struck out looking. Zappa was intentionally walked to bring up Rioi, who grounded a ball back to the pitcher, who threw to first to end the inning.

Jacobo started the sixth with his eighth strikeout of the game then gave up a double before sitting down the next two Kalasions who came to the plate. The momentum had swung Tarrentum’s way however and it was evidenced by the bottom half of the sixth. Ianello led off by drawing a 3-2 full count, he then stepped out of the box, looked around at the outfield and waved to someone in center left. Stepping back in the box, he crushed the next pitch for a solo homerun to deep center left, reaching the second level seats. Puloni then grounded out to second for the first out of the inning as an underwhelming follow-up performance to Ianello’s homerun. Vallena did not disappoint but hit a triple down the right field line. Favella found a little bit more success at the plate and hit a single through the infield to score Vallena from third. Gradoni hit a deep ball into left field which turned into a nice sacrifice fly, though I don’t think that was the intent by the look on Gradoni’s face when he first hit the ball. With two outs, Fesserallia stepped back into the box and hit a hanging curve just by the foul pole in left field for a 2-run homerun. Jacobo, not known for his hitting, then belted a double off the Kalasion reliever. After a conference on the mound the pitcher coughed up a double to Zappataro, scoring Jacobo. With a new reliever in the game, Rioi hit a single (his third of the game), moving Zappa to third to put runners on the corners for Ianello. With another go around for the lineup, and still facing two outs, Ianello ripped an off-the-wall single to right field, scoring Zappa and moving Rioi to third. Unfortunately, that was as far as the Falcons got in that inning as Puloni hit a line drive right to the left fielder to end the inning. The damage had been done though, the Falcons led by 6 (8-2).

Jacobo started the seventh just as dominantly as he started the sixth and struck out the first batter. He then gave up a bloop single but then caused the next two Kalasion’s to pop up. Vallena led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and, on Favella’s third strike, stole second base. Gradoni hit a bloop single into centerfield during his AB but that was all the Falcons could manage as Fesserallia grounded out to first and Jacobo grounded out also to end the inning.

Jacobo, showing stamina and grit, started the eighth on the mound. He struck out, for his twelfth “K”, the lead off hitter but then gave up two hits. Wavi had seen enough and Jacobo was pulled for Pollani Dezzera. Jacobo received a standing ovation as he walked to the dugout and gave a little tip of his cap as he headed down the stairs. Pollani came in and simply shut down the Kalasion’s just as effectively as Jacobo had done. He caused the first batter to pop out to Favella behind home plate, then induced a ground ball out to Zappa at shortstop, who threw to first for the putout. The bottom of the eighth saw Zappa reach base with his third double of the game. The Falcons weren’t able to bring him home as Rioi, Ianello and Puloni were thrown out just as quickly as they swung their bats.

Dezzera stayed in the game to start and finish the ninth. He gave up a lead-off single but then induced a double play and caused the next hitter to pop up to Puloni in right to end the game.

In summary, tonight was a great rebound game for the Falcons. They next head to monochromatic Zwangzug to, hopefully, find success once more against the Zesty Zany Zebras.

When John Morgan walked into the team's clubhouse as a once again member of the team, the looks he got from his teammates were predictable.

Some of them were welcoming. Eyes lit up, smiles broad and guy hugs greeting the prodigal Stars hurler upon his return. Granted, he'd only be able to pitch again in the last match of the group stage -- or in Game 1 of the knockouts. But for some of the players, it was a welcome return for a guy who reacted so out of character for him.

However, some of the looks betrayed suspicion, anger, resentment. Dewey Griffin actually refused to so much as shake Morgan's hand. He'd pulled Morgan off Carlton and got a glancing blow off his right cheek for his troubles. His reward for Morgan's return was a scowl.

When Morgan tried to get Griffin's attention, he turned his back to Morgan and walked out toward the field. Carlton nodded a greeting and gave a perfunctory handshake to his battery mate.

"Dewey's still pissed off at you," Carlton said.

"So am I," came another voice. There was no mistaking whose it was. The only female player on the Stars roster, third baseman Kate Schmidt walked over. She was going to say to Morgan what Griffin and one other player were too chickenshit to.

"You don't deserve a place on this team," she said with an edge in her voice that told Morgan she was just barely keeping from leveling a verbal barrage worthy of the physical one he launched on Carlton. "You don't deserve my forgiveness or Dewey's. If it were up to me, you'd be gone you inbred fucknut."

She took a step toward Morgan with her mouth looking like she was going to spit on Morgan. However, someone she didn't recognise stepped in between them and said, "stop!"

"Who the hell are you?" Schmidt asked. "I insist, who the fuck are you?"

"My name's Calen. Calen McSuthern," he said. "I'm Khalil's partner."

"He's right," Khalil Dennis said. The Stars manager walked over to Schmidt.

"You've got a game to play," he said quietly but firmly. "Unless you want the night off so you can go home and calm down."

"I'm good," she said before turning toward the field and beginning to walk toward the home dugout.

"Which is more than I can say about you, asshole," she said in a stage whisper directed at Morgan. As she jogged out of the clubhouse, Morgan winced.

The Stars ended up winning the match and taking a full one-match lead in the Group A tables. When the rest of the team returned from the dugout, Dennis stood in the centre of the room.

"Lady and gentlemen," Dennis said. "I believe I would be remiss if I didn't introduce my partner in life to you all, as many of you have said you'd like to meet him. So without further ado, her is my partner, Calen McSuthern.

The Stars erupted in applause, and several made a beeline to McSuthern to offer handshakes and hugs. Schmidt walked up to him after the initial crowd had subsided.

"Sorry about earlier," she said. "I hate for that to be my first impression to you. She looked over and saw Matt Peterson, the goalie for the Stars ice hockey team and her boyfriend, standing a few steps away with a look that told her he wanted to speak with McSuthern.

"Oh, Calen, this is my boyfriend, Matt Peterson. Matt, this is Calen McSuthern, Khalil's boyfriend.

The two men shook hands and Peterson drew McSuthern in for a guy hug.

"Nice to meet you, finally," Peterson said. "It's been too long."

"Nice to meet you, too," McSuthern said. "Khalil's told me a lot about you."

"Some of it good, I hope," Peterson said.

"All of it," McSuthern said with a laugh.

"Don't believe the hype," Peterson said with his own laugh. After a few moments, Peterson motioned Dennis over as the two of them found a corner of the room away from the prying eyes of the clubhouse.

"Khalil," Peterson said, drawing in and slowly exhaling. "I've talked to several players, and they and I are all in agreement."

"What about?" Dennis said.

"We're hurt," Peterson said. "Hurt that you didn't feel you could trust us enough to bring Calen here earlier."

Dennis's eyes widened slightly. "Well, uh."

Peterson smiled for a moment and put his hand up.

"I know. Sports can be rather homophobic," Peterson said. "We'd like to think we're more enlightened here in Sarzonia since we've had two gay presidents and two first gentlemen in the Gray House. But there's no such thing as a perfect world.

"Kate and I were planning to have a dinner at the Delaclav restaurant that opened up a block away from our house," Peterson said. "We'd be honoured if you and Calen could join us there. Perhaps the two of you could give us the lowdown of some of your favourite Delaclav dishes."

"And the next time we go to Catherina, we'd be honoured if you'd do the same thing at Crusty Carl's."

"You got it." Peterson saw Dennis offer his hand for a handshake, smiled and instead embraced the baseball team's manager.

THE ROCKET REPORT

UMPS CALL STRIKES; CASTELLI TAKES DEBUT

Tundra Falls- Through all the managerial ejections and color comments from players, you might think that Newmanistan was in last place or something. But that is not the case, and even though the team might not be winning the manner in which they were expecting too, Newmanistan’s 5-3 victory over Virabia at the Proving Groungs avenged the only loss of qualifying so far, and improved the team’s record to 5-1. More work still needs to be done before we can say we are safe to advance, but the team is in the best spot one can be at after six games, and that is leading the group. They can thank young pitcher Brittany Castelli, who made her debut in front of the sold out crowd at the Empire’s most sacred facility. Brittany was aware of all the controversy, and credits coach Christina Sanders for calming her down enough and getting her focus in the proper place. “Chrissy just told me to only worry about what I control. I guess that can seem like a simple message, but after that bad calls Sarah faced and how umpires have not really given Rockets pitchers the corners during the entire Classic, and even with other teams too, it was beginning to concern me that they were going to be real hard on me. ‘Cus you know, I need those pitches on the corner.” Sanders added, “I told her I needed nine from her. It probably wouldn’t have been essential, as Shaf (Sarah Schaefer) was completely fresh and able to go if needed, and Brittany probably knew that, but it was also a challenge. I know how much of a fierce competition that she is.”

The Rockets jumped on the board first, in the bottom of the 2nd as Courtney Weinman delivered a one-out single to score Kristen Wheeler, who if you hadn’t yet noticed, is having a fantastic Classic so far. Castelli seemed well composed, even after a throwing error on Meghan Butler on a routine grounder by Ezra Morejon put the leadoff batter on in the 3rd inning. Ezra eventually scored on a single by Horace Fransiscovich that briefly tied the game up. Despite scoring ten runs in their previous game against Qazox, one thing that Newmanistan did not do was hit a ball over the fence for a home run. That would change over the course of the next three innings, as the Rockets managed three solo HR’s, one from Meghan Butler in the 4th, one from Rachel Cuyler in the 5th, and then Danielle Scott went deep in the 6th. The Scott blast came in immediate response to a Virabia run earlier in the inning, an RBI single from Myles Kaiser. While Sanders was glad to see the home runs start to come, she shrugged a bit over them given that each one was a solo shot. “Obviously as most people know, we don’t live and die on the home run like a Taeshan or a Tocrowkia do, so it was nice to get some. I would have preferred to see them come with runners on base, but you can’t be too picky, I suppose. We were hitting the ball pretty hard all game long, it was a great effort.” Indeed it was, and for Brittany Castelli, she was getting the proper calls made on her pitches, and sitting Virabia batters down. She accepted the challenge to go nine innings for the team, and she put in a great effort. There was a bit of a nerve-racking moment for her in the seventh when Virabia loaded the bases with no one out, but smart defensive work in the infield in conceding a run to get a double play worked beautifully, and Castelli fanned the next batter to get out of the inning. It was one of nine strikeouts for Brittany, who walked just one batter, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and recorded the complete game. The bats restored the two-run cushion in the bottom half of the inning anyway as Rachel Cuyler doubled in Courtney Weinman, who had singled previously. That finished off the scoring; Newmanistan managed 12 hits, and just the one error.

The three game home stand for the Rockets concludes tomorrow as Courtney Ratigan takes to the hill for a game against Milchama. The once proud baseball nation hoped to have more success this classic by bringing what they considered their best players (because you see, they had supposedly been sending “B” teams before) and wanted to make a run at refinding glory. If they are to do that, a win at the Proving Grounds is a must. And the Rockets know that. A win wouldn’t eliminate Milchama, but it would all-but officially eliminate their chances of passing us, which would put us one big step closer to officially qualifying for the WBC.

Tarrentum National Baseball Committee
Press Release

We wish to thank the Tarrentum Falcons for their magnificent play throughout the World Baseball Classic 15. However, we have been prompted by the Supreme President Cesare Italiana to issue the following two statements.

1. We have received word that the WBC has suspended Norian Ionian for two games following his participation and instigation in the unfortunately events during the Kalasion - Tarrentum game in Napoliroma yesterday.

2. Branderi Corporation Police Force has launched a full scale investigation into the activites of Marcus Bianconi during the night of Michael Grastiona's death. Bianconi will remain on the team provisionally and we have not instructed manager Tiberius Wavi on what to do with Bianconi during the investigation. We hope that the correct and proper outcome of the investigation will be swift.

[OOC: I will be out doing a reenactment this weekend with no access to any electronics.]

McSquiggies National Baseball Quick-Facts

Game 7 @Zwangzug
Starting pitcher: Gaele DeRosi - DeRosi's last start only lasted 21/3 innings. He was shelled for five runs, leaving two when he was pulled.

Lineup:
1-(SS) Ferdini Zappataro - "Zappa" has five stolen bases throughout the WBC 15. He also leads the teams in doubles with 6.
2-(1B) Nicolai Rioi - Rioi has been very productive for the Falcons, driving in 10 Runs to lead the team.
3-(LF) Jax Ianello - Ianello has produced 7 RBIs for the Falcons so far in the tournament and leads the team in singles with 8.
4-(CF) Rian Fesserallia - "The Hammer" came through against Kalasion in Game 6 by hitting a homerun, let's hope he keeps it up.
5-(2B) Dessea Vallena - The star player for the Falcons so far. This nimble beauty is a blur on the base paths and has racked up the most hits (16) for the team so far and holds the highest BA (.640) of all regular starters.
6-(RF) Cesare Puloni - Puloni's solid play has lead to many a run-scoring opportunity for the Falcons.
7-(C) Antoni Favella - Favella has been a great player for the Falcons. He hasn't had much opportunities to show off his arm against base stealers, but rest assured, there's power in those arms!
8-(3B) Xavier Gradoni - Gradoni's consistent play has kept the Falcons in a lot of close games.
9-(P)

Game 8 - Barnettsville
Starting Pitcher: Julianna Italiana Bianconi - BIanconi had a decent outing against Barnettsville in Game 2. Her 8 Earned Runs against her should only be viewed as a product of the power hitting atmosphere in Barnettsville. Expect a more controlled game in Napoliroma.

Lineup:
1-(SS) Ferdini Zappataro
2-(1B) Nicolai Rioi
3-(C) Antoni Favella
4-(CF) Rian Fesserallia
5-(2B) Dessea Vallena
6-(RF) Cesare Puloni
7-(LF) Jax Ianello
8-(3B) Xavier Gradoni
9-(P)

Milchama Screwed, People call MBL Experiment a Failure

After another loss to the Qazox Oxen or Phoenix or whoever the Milchama Warriors languish with a losing record in second to last place with almost zero hope of advancing to the next round let alone a quarterfinals appearance. The Warriors are 2 games behind advancements with not that many games left and with Milchamian teams very adept at knowing how to lose clutch games the people are revolting against the MBL players who played. As one random in Alexandria said, "This is the best we can do?! I thought these guys were good, my god we suck. First football and now baseball, I think it's time to pull the plug on this whole international sports scene."

While most are not as negative as that guy the air has been somewhere between catatonic and deadly in Milchama. With baseball being the national sport most assumed that even with some struggles the national team, full of our supposedly best players, would at least be able to advance beyond the group stage before failing against more experienced international opponents in the later stages. However, it turns out winning is hard for this group as experienced by them losing to EMOTHICA! 8-4. Right now only one starter is of any competent ability and only Martin LaPlante and Ben Aminton have enhanced their reputations as hitters.

All of this bodes perfectly for a game against a Newmanistan team that is more likely to be more determined and better than a shoddy Warriors unit that will probably wither out and die after going down in the 1st inning as the Rockets inevitably score 31783 runs again. It's just been a mess for this WBC and quite frankly it's awful. I'm depressed and done. F--K!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOC: Don't worry I will still RP, though tomorrow it might be tough considering I'm moving back home from college.

"...the pitch from Loomis, way outside, oh and one."

"Runners hold, lucky break for the Zebras there."

"Runners at the corners, one away here in the sixth."

"I've got an e-mail here from Brian in Herthavan."

"Loomis throws to first again, runner easily hustles in."

"Brian reminds us of the National League, early seventies."

"Ha! How long did that last?"

"You already know, you've been researching it."

"Well, yeah, but our listeners probably don't."

"Right. Um. Well...it was around in the early seventies! Not too long after that."

"This one's swung on, hit hard into left. Two runs score, it's a double. And I think that'll be all for Loomis. Yep, here comes Croes. Pitching change, stick with us, because you've got no other choice."

"They can change the station. Or band. Or turn the radio off."

"Tell us about the National League, Oliver."

"Right. First champions, would you believe the Kindtown Lizards?"

"Yeah, actually, I would."

"Well, you knew already. Um, next season, it was the Weegham Moose."

"Weegham had moose?"

"It's a nickname. Then came...hey, what do you know, Kerlagrad Dragons."

"Namesakes of today's team, but not the same organization."

"Then...Mustangs...they're not the namesakes of...or are they..."

"You work on that, Oliver. For those of you just joining us, anyway, Zwangzug took an early lead in the first with Cecil Arzaga driving in Benjamin Mercer. Barnettsville tied it in the third, but the Zebras pulled ahead once more, Loomis helping his own cause by scoring in the bottom half. Kersten would drive in a couple runs with two away in the fourth, and Rustrian drove in Arzaga last inning, but now Barnettsville is chipping away at the lead. That two-run double just made it five-four, and Croes going to Raymond Harstein to try and avoid last time around..."

World Baseball Classic 15 coverage

Two games, two losses. And the Nordics have been outscored 16-6 in those losses. That's just unacceptable for a team that it's fans consider one of the best in the world. This time, Tommy Thunder was the victim of the loss. "I felt great out there, but I guess my stuff jsut flattened out too fast." he said in the post game interview. Hopefully, the Nordics can turn it around in their next game, with Alexandria Dassow throwing the ball. Of course no one expects her to toss another perfect game, but she is certainly the focus of the Nordic Nation hopeful.

Just Remember

It was a tough last three games for the Reds. What seemed to be a miracle run right now turned to sadness. They started out 4-0 and even blew out the ex-world champions by four points. Remarkable considering that the Western Cuban were not even predicted to even make it to the playoffs. They were a instant hit in Western Cuba. The people of Western Cuba called them the miracle reds. Soon baseball became one of the most popular sports in a few days in Western Cuba. The fans loved the awesome pitching of Tom Novak the star pitcher. They loved Dug Acta's remarkable love for the game amazing the fans as he used his gold glove to stop remarkable plays and they loved there manager Jose Peterson. However this seemed to reached it's Climax after they had a huge upset against the former champs winning 7-3. After that things seemed to turn bad. One of the Red's players Ryan Vaughn was shot to death as he exited his hotel building dieing of wounds later on in the night. This took a large toll on the Western Cubans. Then the next day Jose Peterson had a stroke thus more effecting the Western Cubans. However by a miracle he returned that night to coach the Western Cubans. The final effect though might of hit today. A terrorist attack effected the Western Cubans. In downtown Vladgrad a large explosion went off in the Sickle Building it soon collapsed and made other buildings collapse too. The attacks killed 7,000+ fans. The Western Cubans wanted to badly stop playing but there manager made a remarkable speech to them. Inspiring them to continue to play.

" Now we have gotten so far. We started four and zero and even beat the world champions. Then it seemed that bad luck then hit us. Three games in a row. Then we lost a brother ( one of the Red's ball players ). Then we lost 7,000 loyal fans. Now all of you want to quit. If we quit what would happen. What would the Western Cubans be able to look up to. Well right now the WBC. If we at least make the players we could regain the people's happyness for our country. Our team equals a countries morale. Our country. Now what do you think are 7,000 loyal fans and Rick Vaughn want to do in heaven? They want a championship not a forfeit. Now what our we going to do my fellow brothers. Are we going to disappoint or inspire. I hope you choose wisely. "

Jose Peterson started walking out expecting no answer but instead he found hope and he heard what he wanted to hear. A loud noise by the players then said.

" INSPIRE!! "

Jose Peterson then knew that something good would happen something great. No longer did he feel the pains in everyday life but true happyness. He just did not cure the baseball team. He cured himself also. They soon began to train with one goal. They then decided to call this goal of going to the playoffs the " pursuit of happyness " They wanted to go to the playoffs badly , first though they needed to gain the countries attention again. 7,000 seats in the Red's stadium was painted black. With one seat in the middle adding the total number 7,001 in that area. That one extra seat in the middle would be painted in yellow and would say in red in letters. Remember They hoped this would get national attention , but Jose Peterson had the feeling this rememberance would go international. Though he did not care for both he just wanted the people of Western Cuba happy and a playoff clinch. They then set of to practice for there upcoming game. One of the home games if there were any left would be honored for Ryan Vaughn who was killed and the 7,000 other people in the terrorist attack. The game would be called 7,000 and 1. With white letters on the side of there red hats saying 7,000 and 1.

The Vonghurst Star
Virabia gives up second straight loss to Verdriet

VER 0 0 2 0 1 0 2 1 0 6 10 0
VRB 0 0 0 1 0 1 1 1 0 4 9 0

For Virabia, the beginning of this cup was marked with some suprise wins, eternal optimism. However as the cup continued the once optimistic Virabi team has had their positive outlook beaten out of them. The final nail in the coffin though was a home loss against Vedriet whom before today's match had not won a single game. Now sure, some may say that Virabia was just getting lucky and their luck ran out. Others will point to the fact that before today they were 3-3, which isn't all that impressive, both are right. Still, for what ever it's worth the optimism is gone, and the level of play isn't what it was in the beginning of the cup.

Still, being in bad mood doesn't stop the game from happening, or from 25,000 fans from showing up to the ball park on what was a cool, cloudless day. As far as most fans go the game was nothing to complain about. Both teams played a good game, one they shouldn't be ashamed of (even though the Virabi team surely isn't).

With two pitchers that tend to have trickier pitches, the game was expected to get off to a slow start as the hitters got a feel for the opposing pitchers, and thats what happened. That was until a Verdriet batter finally got on base in the top of the third. He would then be driven in by a triple from the catcher (who went on to successfully steal home). Then in the next side Virabia would attempt to return the favour by getting runners in scoring position, but were unable to drive them in. However one inning later, Virabia would finally get on the board with a rare inside the park home run by Cooper Hawkes. This brought much applause and a standing ovation from the fans and his teammates. With a one run deficit, and with their hitters gaining steam it looked like Virabia would be able to get ahold of the lead with in a few innings. However, right afterwards in the top of the fifth, pitcher Marco Rivera hyper-extended his arm and as a result was taken out of the game and was replaced by Relief Pitcher Jack Lenon. Who quickly gave up a home run. Thus extending Verdriet's lead to two. Something that would eventually be countered by Virabia in the bottom of the sixth. However with only a one point cushion, Veridriet stepped it up in the top of the seventh with a 2-run blast that soared over the centre-right field fence. While Verdriet would get one more runner on base, the situation proved fruitless, as a 4-6-3 double play would end the side. By now there were some serious concerns about whether or not to leave Lenon in the game. He had given up three runs, and his pitches started to lose form, but Manager MacGuyver decided not send Bond to warm up so he could be put in the game by the eighth inning. Then to make matters worse Lenon ended up getting both himself and Morejon out on a double play, instead of bunting, like most would do in that situation. This turned out to be the move that got Macguyver to call the pen and get Bond warming up , however due to a fluke, the call never connected, and Bond never warmed up, even though the manager thought he did. Either way, Virabia would end up scoring in the side as a nicely placed ball in centre fielld by Chychla was enough to drive Horace Fransiscovich in from first.

However, as mentioned earlier Bond wasn't warmed up, so thus when called into pitch his lack of preparedness showed,as his pitches ended up being mostly fastballs, or junkballs that ended soaring down the middle. One such pitch was then blasted to right field, and ended up hitting the foul pole, giving Veridriet their sixth run. Still, the rest of the side was silent, as the other two hitters would ground out. After this Verdriet wouldn't get anymore runners on base. The bottom of the eighth though, would prove to also be Virabia's last gasp of getting on base. However, it was a pretty big final gasp, as Virabia would get the bases loaded, but unfortunately only Paris would make his way back home, before two fly outs and a strike out ended the eighth inning, with three runners left stranded. Next came the ninth and final inning, which for both teams was three up and three down, with a strikeout for Verdriet on Mickey Paris ending the game and sealing Verdriet's first win of the classic 6-4 over Virabia.

Next on the slate for Virabia is an away contest against Milchama. There's a chance of Virabia emerging victorious, but it won't effect the grand scheme of things as it's pretty likely that this game sealed shut Virabia's chances of moving on to the next round. Still there are three more games to play, and each will help contribute to Virabia's rank in international baseball, thus they aren't for naught, and even if they were you can bet we'd still cover it.

At 1-1, Sarzonia was beginning to look the part of a team that was seriously overrated. After its second best starting pitcher had a disastrous outing and ultimately got suspended for his troubles, the Stars looked like they were about to unravel.

Little did anyone know the ensuing meltdown for pitcher John Morgan and his eventual return to the team would galvanise the Stars. They have run off five consecutive games, playing the sort of ball an observer might expect from a Jim Paulsen-managed team.

Even though the Stars have been largely without the designated hitter, long a staple of Sarzonian World Baseball Classic play, the team has put up some scary offensive numbers. They continued that trend with a 12-4 thrashing of Bluth Corporation, a result that may seem to be small consolation to gridball supporters after Bluth Corporation defeated Sarzonia in the World Bowl X final.

"We don't even consider gridball," manager Khalil Dennis said. When a writer noted his use of the Sarzonian name for the sport, he simply said, "Delaclavs also use that word for the sport."

Even though the Stars have a 6-1 record and look to be a virtual lock to advance to the knockout stages, third baseman Kate Schmidt said the team isn't taking anything for granted.

"We still have our match with Secristan in the offing," she said. "We've got to do everything in our power to make sure we take care of business."

That may be a little easier with the Stars' next match against Secristan taking place at Fleetwood Park. That means the Millionaires will be without the services of their designated hitter, at least as a designated hitter. During the team's game in Secristan, Sarzonia used Tyler Hunter as the designated hitter. That would mean then that Jose Ortiz would not be in the starting lineup unless he were to play first or third base.

However, Dennis said he isn't thinking that far ahead.

"We've still got Mantwenic," he said.

Tomorrow's day off means the Stars can start Brad Baxter on his usual rest against Mantwenic. Charlie Palmer will take the hill against Secristan. After that, Dennis is non-committal about the start for the final group stage match.

"It depends on a lot of things," he said. "I won't cross that bridge until I get there."

"Again!"

"I can't believe this"

"Losing in the 12th inning!"

"And we had a lead as well!"

"3-1, 3-2, 4-3, it all unraveled"

"This team just keeps on getting worse and worse"

"I thought we were good at baseball"

"Apparently we lost a lot by not trying for awhile"

"Well we'll just have to rebuild I guess"

"Yep"

"New team for next time"

"I'm sure, a bunch of youngsters who don't know any better"

"Yeah people like Maury Krentin or Flip Joneser"

"That would be great"

"Now we got this crap"

"Isn't it wonderful?"

"It really is, a crap team keeps on losing to other mediocre teams"

"At least the other teams we needed to lose lost today"

"That sucks"

"Why?"

"It gives us hope and that can only go one way"

"What way?"

"Just build us up until they rip us down"

"It's awful, just awful"

"I agree, it's just terrible"

"Damn it all"

"Yep"

"Oh well"

"How are the World Cup prospects shaping up?"

"Well they're sending out the same team that won the CoH"

"That's good"
