Skirts for Girls?

In a recent thread discussing toys per gender, other players and myself got tied into a conversation about wherever schools should make it mandatory for girls to wear skirts, or vice versa. In my opinion, I think it should be the choice of the individual if they want to wear a skirt or trousers, although I also think girls should be encouraged wear skirts. Whilst one wouldn't want to force a person to wear a gender-related costume if they didn't want to do so, I think girls should be encouraged to wear skirts/ dresses simply because these costumes were made to suit their needs.

How does it suit their needs? That doesn't make sense.

Just allow people to wear what they want, as long as it isn't illegally-revealing or anything, it's fine.

Trousers for females, at least in the USA, are much less convenient than male trousers. They have smaller pockets. I would rather wear a skirt, where I know I have no pockets, than wear some pants with really short pockets in which I cannot place anything.
