Factional struggles within the Party. If the communist parties of the different republics ever split from the all-Union coalition there's a real risk they might exercise their republic's right to self-determination and split Iberia into a handful of socialist statelets, which would pretty much kill our status as a middle power.

Military Generals say that the scale of the conflict could escalate into a conflict that would match that of the Gulf War, or larger.
