If so, by all means, continue believing in God. The rest of us non-morally-abhorrent people will be over here.

Where do your morals come from, if not a god?

What a silly question. My own ethics, and what I know is best for people. I always find it sad when people need a god to live moral, ethical lives.

Morals are nothing more than distinctions between "right" and "wrong." Any social species will evolve at least some capacity for morality in order to be successful.

Evolution is where we get just about anything, so it also gave us intellect and sentience, which we can use to determine right from wrong.

It's not that it doesn't make sense for you to be a theist, it's just that both atheists and theists alike have morals.

Life doesn't have to be about making sense. It's generally a good idea, though.

Anyway, you don't have to decide these things overnight. Think it over.

it starts as kin selection, I help those related to me by say sharing food, or taking turns looking for predators, but of course if this is very successful it will spread each generation until the whole population has those same genes and everybody is looking out for everybody else.
then you get into more complex things like developing memory and reciprocity to dissuade cheater, or developing cheaters take help but do not offer it.

there is a great book on the subject called The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins devotes half the book to it, The Science of Good and Evil by Micheal Shermer is devoted to the complexity of our morals and where that comes from, although there is a chapter about the origin of morals.
I think we risk becoming the best informed society that has ever died of ignorance. ~Reuben Blades

I got quite annoyed after the Haiti earthquake. A baby was taken from the wreckage and people said it was a miracle. It would have been a miracle had God stopped the earthquake. More wonderful was that a load of evolved monkeys got together to save the life of a child that wasn't theirs. ~Terry Pratchett

Wanting God to bless America and stating that view is not trolling. You're not immune from religion no matter what you believe in or don't believe in.

Speaking of god bless America and whatnot, we should really scrap In God We Trust and go back to E Pluribus Unum. At least that wouldn't be practically violating the first amendment.

I don't think you understand that. It's hard to argue that there's an (excessive) entanglement of church and state merely because state officials enunciate 'God.' Greece is a good and extremely recent case explaining it.

I do understand it, there's a difference between state officials enunciating their beliefs in a deity and changing the motto of the nation to "In God We Trust", that's pretty non-secular. It also shut's out all the polytheistic religions because they have more than one deity, and given the overwhelming majority of Christianity in the US it doesn't take a genius to figure out which monotheistic god it's promoting.
