In our re-foundation in 1993 we used mainly paper bank notes, but also we used the old 1 Vercon and 2 Vercon and 5, 10 and 20 Vercon coins. (1, 2 and 5 are silver, 10 and 20 are gold) from the original 1918-1951 URV.

Also, many citizens, even semi-citizens (These are under 18s, on their 18th birthday they also celebrate becoming full citizens once passing a extremely easy Civil Mind Test, which is a 102 page exam, and quite simple. Rarely 1 or 2 fail the test, only 4 have been recorded to fail. If you fail, you will be treated as a non-citizen homeless person.) have credit cards, AKA the Xoc Card, pure plastic and very cheap to manufacture as well as cheap to make the microchip.

Nazhen Zi's currency, the ailun, is not tied to any physical substance. However, it is directly tied to, and gains its worth from, a Nazhen unit of time, also called the ailun.

One ailun of money is equivalent to one ailun of work of any kind. The legal definition of what kind of work is acceptable is, essentially, anything that a yieldbearer would be expected to do for her superior in a normal social situation. This definition is fairly extensive and includes everything from personal favors to physical labor to answering the employer's questions. This also means that professions in Nazhen Zi do not have different salaries depending on how valuable their work is perceived to be. Instead, the minimum wage is identical for all jobs, and it is illegal both to demand more and to offer less.

Unlike with most human currencies, where the exchange thereof is entirely voluntary, a Nazhen zheden cannot legally refuse to trade the currency for their time, except through the usual method of "challenging" the demand used in normal conversation. This is often seen by outsiders an an extreme inconvenience. However, most Nazhen citizens views it as a positive, since it allows them to obtain help at any time with any task at little cost to themselves.

In terms of how valuable the currency actually is, one ailun of money is worth about 5 cents, while one ailun of time translates to about 15 seconds.

Money In Chadtonia

Postby Chadtonia » Thu Jun 05, 2014 7:07 pm

The government of the United Provinces of Chadtonia, has recently voted to make the international trade value of ten [10] Chados to be equal to one [1] lancian dollar according to said value used in The Rogue Nation of Lancelia. In the past a citizen was able to exchange five Certificate of Ten Chados for a Waiver of Empirical Monetary Decree, worth precisely fifty Chados. The government of Chadtonia has since ceased the printing of Certificate(s) of Ten Chados for a Waiver of Empirical Monetary Decree.

The previous government dealt mostly in coin, that is to say one coin; the Chado:

Image
A pile of Chados. [The pictograph script on the coin is Historical Chadtonian.] [Note: The Chado is still in use, but the government is attempting to convert solely to paper currency.]

However the government, approximately three years ago, did add an additional coin, considering it to be worth 1 1/10th of a Chado. Generically it was known as the penny (singular) or pennies (plural). The official name of the coin however was simply The Chadtonian Copper Piece.

Image
The Chadtonian Copper Piece (aka penny), originally valued at 1 1/10th of a Chado, and due to recent legislation in favor of paper-only currency considered worthless. The reverse side has only one image a sketch of Emperor Chad The First. [Although the above photograph is larger than the photograph of the Chado coin, the Chadtonian Copper Piece is slightly smaller than the Chado.]

Until recent legislation a Chadtonian citizen or a visitor to The United Provinces of Chadtonia was able to exchange ten Chados for a Certificate of Ten Chados, and in turn exchange those for other certificates of various values. The government of Chadtonia is now creating a "paper currency" system as described below. The first of these bills in circulation is The Retainer Of The United Provinces Of Chadtonia For Five Chados. The Retainer Of The United Provinces Of Chadtonia For Five Chados replaces The Cetificate of Ten Chados. [Two Retainer(s) Of The United Provinces of Chadtonia For Five Chados equal one Certificate of Ten Chados; though the latter is no longer being produced by the Chadtonian government. The Government is no longer creating the Certificates, replacing those Certificates with actual paper currencies (although currently only two paper currencies are in full effect.) A citizen may still use the Certificates however (until a government institution acquires one in which the value will be returned and the Certificate destroyed.) This change is to help reduce counterfeiting of the Chado coin, and with eventual the goal of eliminating coins and converting solely to paper currency. The Chado coin is slowly being replaced by a paper currency The Chado as shown below. Both the coin and the paper currency are called Chados.

Image
--The Retainer of United Provinces of Chadtonia for Five Chados
[Note: Although the term "Dollar" is not technically an official title for this Bill, the PD on the Bill stand for Provinces and Dollar, respectively, with the term "Dollar" being a synonym for Bill or Retainer.]

The Retainer of United Provinces of Chadtonia for Five Chados value is exactly the same as five Chados. The Bill is officially called The Retainer of United Provinces of Chadtonia for Five Chados. In common speech however it is referred to as a "Five Chado Bill", a "Five Chado" or simply a "Five." Some citizens more familiar with the Historical Chadtonian language use the slang term "Fifsha" to refer to this bill, but that is not the official title given by the Chadtonian government.

The reverse national exchange is exactly the same. The percentage increase on a Chado is 0.00 Chados. And there is no interest rate. Chados were once practically worthless outside the context of The United Provinces of Chadtonia; in which time-period the citizenry was oft apt to trade them for other currencies when traveling to other nations. However, the government of the United Provinces of Chado, has recently voted to make the international trade value of ten Chados to be equal to the lancian dollar according to said value used in The Rogue Nation of Lancelia. Non-citizens can exchange their currency into Chados or the two paper currencies in The United Provinces of Chadtonia for the said value of their currency according to the said value of the Lancian Dollar according to the Rouge Nation of Lancelia, with ten Chados being equal to one[1] Lancian Dolar.

Note: 'o" in Historical Chadtonian literally means "to purchase in"... The name of the coin was originally Chadtoniao (meaning "to purchase in Chadtonia"), however Emperor Chad the Second shortened the title by Royal Decree to Chado.

The currency is theoretically backed by gold and silver, with gold set as fifty times as expensive as silver. However, in practice, the central bank officially undervalues its precious metal reserves, meaning any attempt to exchange currency for government reserves would occur at an unfavourable rate, so the currency is de facto fiat. The monetary system is currently under review, pending a decision on whether to allow the currency to float freely or whether to join a currency union/adopt a new international currency. It is expected the formal link to precious metals will be abandoned in the next parliament.
