Coastal Cities to be flooded in the future

Postby Rio Cana » Wed May 07, 2014 1:34 pm

A US report says that chances are coastal cities will be flooded by the next century by rising seas. That must be bad news for Florida. That's bad news for my neighborhood. :o Need to plan to sell the house before the tides starts flowing in and out of the neighborhood streets.

Found this news article which shows how some US cities would look after the seas rises. In the long term, people will really have to leave those cities. Sometimes a sea wall is not feasible. In Florida they say because of the rocks that seawater would sprout out behind the sea wall.

Article - http://www.today.com/news/artist-shows- ... 2D79630469

So do you think this will happen or not. I think Yes. Here when it rains, some street rain gutters tend to remain full of rainwater and will not go down until low tide. Before it was not really like that.

That's a shame, houses should be built out of better material so people don't have to move.

Or begin moving people to the interior as a gradual trend in case preparations fail.

It would have to be a houseboat. That way you can remain above the rising seas.

Well, the American public refuses to actually try and do something about it. But slowly, houses on stilts will become the norm, people will buy jet skis, and coastal cities will either die or their developed areas will move slowly inland. Or, perhaps more realistically, thousands of people will die in massive storms and floods as seawalls are breached and neighborhoods are flooded, and soon all that will be left of once-mighty cities like my home town will be their ports, built on pontoons or at the end of causeways.

Because America can't be bothered to do anything.

The interior of the Maldives is a great place to escape rising seas, I hear. :eyebrow:

1. people should not build on barrier beaches and expext them to always be there.
2. that artists "rendition" would require a sea level rise of more than 40 feet, even at south beach. that simply aint gonna happen

We've been warned of this for 30 years. Don't worry, like Reagan's Environmental appointee said, the "End times" are upon us.

Dumbass greedy rich people need to be put on house arrest in their beachfront vacation homes until they agree to do something about it.

Though on the plus side, several tax havens are located on islands at risk from climate change.

Why does it seem that governments are more interested in dragging there feet when it comes to this. It seems they rather leave the problem to future politicians to cope with.

I'm aware that the issue is going to seem large in the moment but the significance diminishes on arrival of the realization that everyone dies. That is not to say that flooding isn't a problem, just questioning "seriousness".

The goal of politicians is to get reelected, it's why voting for a temporary leader is silly.

Which unfortunately may happen in the case of the the U.S. I will truly miss New Orleans though at-least Arkansas will be beachfront property :P.

Wait. Don't you live on a houseboat on a river?
We are the Glorious Empire of the Scandinvans. Surrender or be destroyed. Your civilization has ended, your time is over. Your people will be assimilated into our Empire. Your technological distinctiveness shall be added to our own. Your culture shall be supplanted by our own. And your lands will be made into our lands.

"For five thousand years has our Empire endured. In war and peace we have thrived. Against overwhelming odds we evolved. No matter what we face we have always survived and grown. We shall always be triumphant." -Emperor Godfrey II

Because the current politicians will be dead when that happens.

They're rather enjoy their money and doom quarter of the planet than do something about it and make themselves poorer.

Their governments are capable of moving people elsewhere, I don't think migration has to happen immediately though.

This pretty much summarizes Republican attitude on global climate change and rising sea levels.

Yes it will. The Netherlands already has an extremely extensive seawall and dike system, they'll probably be among the best-off.

The Maldives, though...
