Divair2 wrote:http://www.thedrum.com/news/2014/04/20/government-introduce-law-requiring-porn-sites-obtain-proof-users-are-over-18

The Government plans to make anyone aiming to view porn online prove that they are over 18 years of age through new requirements for website owners.

The new laws will see adult website owners forced to block anyone unable to provide proof that they are over the age of 18, in a bid to crack down on children viewing pornographic websites, The Sunday Times has reported.

The system is expected to be similar to one used abroad, with credit card details or official records being provided those visiting pornographic websites in order to gain access. Sites that fail to comply with the measures will be blocked.

A statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “We are legislating to put R18 material that can only be sold in licensed sex shops behind access controls on video-on demand services.

“The same protections should apply online as offline and we are clarifying the law to make sure that is the case — we want the legislation to be in place by the end of the year. No decision has been made about offshore sites.”

The proposal would follow Prime Minister David Cameron’s introduction of web filters by internet providers to block access to unsuitable material, and combat online child pornography.

Fuck the Tory govt. This type of authoritarian shit is the exact reason why I absolutely detest David Cameron.

A person who virtually doesn't get outside, being an extreme social recluse.

E.g. Rio

I don't go to doctors a lot either and have much less legal documents than a 19-year-old Brazilian is expected to have.

Why the fuck is the government getting involved? I don't think it is good that under-age children are viewing porn sites, but parental control should be up to the parents not the government.

The problem more centres around the imperative use of credit card details (which is what will eventually throw this into the long grass anyway, if there's any sense left in Westminster as to where to pick a fight about privacy).

The government has dropped, passed or feebly shelved virtually all of its major legislatory plans (the Budget is different to this but the policy raft is ongoing anyway) and now it is scrape-the-bottom-of-the-barrel season.

Wait... you can now legally have sex at an age younger than that at which you can watch porn? This works... how?

It's like this in most countries.

Porn is legally interpreted to be a kind of prostitution.

Prostitution is where you pay people to have sex, porn is completely different. Some people need to think about that.

Originally, you payed to see people have sex, that's about the concept of porn.
So, it's a form of prostitution, albeit a very, very, very clean one.

Well, I read that watching horror movies and thrillers at an early age has been proven to be psychologically damaging. Not too sure about porn.
Then again, I'm pretty comfortable with the 18+ limit.
