Relevant to anime: what do you think of otaku subculture?

I tend to view it as being an umbrella which encompasses a variety of distinct groups. It encompasses everything from fujoshi to moe fans, so there's a lot of ground to cover and plenty of room for variation within each group. Some segments I like, some I don't, and some I have no particular opinion about.

Who else would read books after books looking for explanations, from Social Psychology (group behavior and youth) to History of Eastern Culture (as a background to gender roles), or read news articles about social life of otaku, or explain harem anime with Structuralist Binary Opposition?

Hi. I've recently been trying to figure out the roots of the "waifu" phenomenon, with my present avenue of inquiry being attachment theory. Not groundbreaking work, but it's new to me.

*Ahem*; in it's stereotypical Japanese form I interpret it as a form of existential crisis that occurs on a somewhat macroscopic level. Where perhaps overworking and too much stress, personal lack of social skills and general lack of will to socialize with others along with a perceivable cold environment, etc. etc. eventually lead to some form of attempted escape in the fancies of fictitious work, when it comes to the general and well-known Anime Otaku subculture. Where extravagant wish-fulfillment fantasies fill (or attempt to feel) voids like control, social skills, or even sex in a wide variety of forms. It's consumerism being obvious: just look at the Japanese Pop scene Superflat.

Fortunately it has no visible Manifesto or ideology so it can't be called hypocritical or ironically self-destructive like Western subcultures (like Punk or the Beat Movement and their endless descendants all to current Hipsters) because it's not a counterculture. It's a subculture of 'official' pariahs that thrives on the capitalist consumerism 'The System' feeds. And the Otaku subculture is just fine with that. As I see, it simply cares about feeding it's desires by buying merchandise in an attempt to fill emptiness is life.

To an extent I see this as perfectly fair. But there is a segment of the otaku subculture which focuses most strongly on slice-of-life series, and I just don't see your conclusions bearing out for that group. Slice-of-life series are not generally known for being particularly sexually stimulating compared to the alternatives, nor are they known for offering their consumers any greater sense of control than they likely already possess. Finally, if slice-of-life series are wish-fulfillment devices they offer fulfillment of some pretty mundane wishes, most of which could be fulfilled by simply going outside and talking to people. Not exactly apocalyptic stakes for most.

The purpose of a slice-of-life series isn't to offer the audience an opportunity to escape reality, it's to offer an examination of reality. I would contend that the segment of otaku subculture which is strongly interested in slice-of-life series is far more interested in introspection and exploration than it is in filling a void or escaping reality.

Besides, I don't visibly look like an Otaku in public and my room looks like Rei Ayanami's. Complete with a desk with empty bottles and scattered meds, and boxes with stacks of schoolwork and books. That or Solaris Base. Then again, my room is a storage room too...

I liked the functional design of Rei's bedroom. No extraneous items, everything in its place, and an arrangement which allows maximum use of each unit of space. Then again, I've always had to make good use of every single square centimeter of space I've ever had.

That's certainly an example of people going too far, though I'm not so sure it's common or severe enough to be considered a demerit against otaku subculture in general. Football hooliganism merits coordinated police action at major sporting events. I know of no equivalent level of security having ever been necessary at any anime convention, so it seems reasonable to assume that while what you saw is a problem it's not as much of an object of concern for otaku as other matters might be. The occasional nut freaking out and punching someone for saying they didn't particularly care for a series is just that in the otaku subculture...the occasional nut.

Would you be willing to establish a sliding scale of moe to illustrate the grades? I have no particular inclination for or against moe, but I am curious regardless.

There is room for such behavior to be considered quirky, but it's only quirky if the behavior is not compulsive and doesn't inhibit one's ability to function. I'm not saying it's wrong for you to not want to be around such people (quirky or otherwise), but rather that I've known people who act similarly without actually having anything particularly wrong with them.

And as we've already established, I don't particularly mind the Tomo Takinos and Haruhi Suzumiyas of the world. Quirky people are my bread and butter.

Hi. I've recently been trying to figure out the roots of the "waifu" phenomenon, with my present avenue of inquiry being attachment theory. Not groundbreaking work, but it's new to me.

I've never actually witnessed it personally. I've seen those body pillows being sold and I've seen a dude full of merchandise from Heaven's Lost Property showing a particular but forgetful character, but I've never ever seen it up close and personal.

And I ain't too familiar with the Attachment Theory in specifics...is it like saying that the people into the waifu thing somewhat project emotional needs and possible satisfaction onto an nonexistent character? Admittinglty, this is viable for me because I feel that when somebody likes a character they project a part of themselves onto it. If this weren't the case, 'killing' fictional characters results easy. And I feel like Meursault looking at typical waifus.

Either way, I'm truly fascinated by your interest. I for one believe that there must be a meaning to all action and as a result it annoys me when things are just dismissed as crazy or stupid. No, no, no. Even as amateurs we mustn't reduce ourselves to people who cry "hysteria" or "primitive" when something drastically different is seen.

That sounds really interesting. I found out about Zipang last week. And after watching The Final Countdown I was definitely intrigued by the premise for the show. And I did like it all the way till the cliffhanger at the end.
