Balloons Over Paradise (Now Offering global tours) [OPEN]

Postby Costa Aluria » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:56 am

[OOC Note: Balloons Over Paradise was one of my first attempts at a storefront on GE&T. As such, it does not meet my current standards for a storefront. A redesign is in the plan, but does not have a timeline. Please excuse its poor appearance and functionality.]

Image

Balloons Over Paradise, Costa Aluria's first and only hot air balloon tour operators, would like to cordially invite your family to join us for one of our sunrise balloon safaris on your next visit to the south seas islands. Our four propane fueled hot air balloons fly daily, weather permitting, and would love to share this unforgettable experience with you. Controlled launch times coinciding with gentle breezes, combined with a total of eight different launch sites throughout the island, ensures that your flight will never deviate towards the sea. Every morning, we will closely monitor the weather reports, as well as perform tests of our own to determine the projected flight path and optimal launch spot. Our experienced commercial pilots always have the final flight determination. If a flight is deemed for any reason to be of concern, it will be cancelled and a full refund given or the flight will be rescheduled. In addition, our pilots, our balloons, and our entire company are triple covered from a wealth of insurance protecting you against the unlikely chance of harm.

Image

The balloon safari is not only the most unique way to experience the beauty of our islands, it is also a full hands-on learning experience. Under the direction of our pilot and experienced ground crew, those who wish to do so may engage earnestly in the operations of the pre-flight setup and post-flight disassembly. Participants will learn at least one of the critical and universal ground crew assembly positions, as well as the full disassembly and pack-up procedure. We'll supply the gloves and protective equipment; all you have to do is make sure to wear clothing made of natural fibers such as cotton. We may venture into areas that require your clothes getting dirty; please dress accordingly.

Image

Our day will begin by meeting at a predetermined location outside of the capital city Mosaic, where our pilots will determine their preferred launch site, with transporation to the appropriate site ensuing. We will begin launch preparations, and when everything is safe, proceed to invite your family into the basket where the flight will begin. Our ground chase crew will pack up all remaining items at the launch site, and following the flight plan prepared by the pilot, proceed to follow us to possible landing sites, maintaining radio contact with the pilot for the duration of the flight. While there is no way to "steer" a balloon, a good pilot is able to control the balloon's altitude to take advantage of different winds. However, we will be at the whim of these winds, making the ground extraction crew a necessary component of the flight. Often, our ground crews beat our balloons to our landing sites and are there to gently bring us back to earth. And, no need to worry about our ground crew getting stuck. Even though we may experience rough terrain, our chase vehicles are all rugged four wheel drive vehicles capable of commanding any terrain found in our flight path. Balloons Over Paradise maintains superb landowner relations with our potential landing sites, ensuring that all parties involved are satisfied with the flight operations.

Image

At the culmination of our flight, we will disassemble and pack up the balloon, returning to our launch site. There, we will celebrate our flight with a champagne brunch. We purchase our champagnes from a local winery, and also add in breads, as well as fruits, cheeses, and honey from local farms. We will recite a prayer of gratitude for a successful flight, and a commemorative flight certificate will be issued to each passenger after the duration of the flight. The entire day's experience will last between four and five hours, and you will still have ample time on the day of your flight to enjoy paradise on the ground level.

Our Pilots

Image
Samuel Whitcombe is the founder of Balloons Over Paradise. Samuel has over 35 years of flight experience and over 16,000 hours in command of hot air balloons. Samuel has flown balloons in many countries and over five continents. The bulk of Samuel's experience comes from flying balloons over Australia, where he lived for many years. Samuel brings his fun loving and eccentric attitude to the ballooning community, and is never short of a tale to spin. Samuel pilots the Jolly Roger balloon.

Image
Evangeline Whitcombe-Pearson is Samuel's daughter. Though she is just 33 years old, you would be hard pressed to find a more experienced pilot. Growing up in her entirety around balloons, Evangeline earned her private pilot's license when she was just 14, becoming the youngest Australian citizen to do so. Her commercial pilot's license was earned soon after that, and Evangeline has been flying for nearly 19 years on a daily basis. She has over 8,000 hours of flight time under her wing. Evangeline flies our Beach Cruiser balloon.

Image
Jonah Ekpre gained his experience flying true safari flights over the savannahs of Africa. He can tell you many stories of warding off lions, being attacked by raiders, and of chase crews unable to retrieve his balloon for days on end. When Samuel made a trip to Africa, the two met and Ekpre was soon hooked on the idea of operating in a place that offered no threat of these situations. He has proven adept at piloting over the mountainous terrain of Costa Aluria. Jonah has over 9,000 hours of flight time to his name. Jonah flies our Tradewind balloon.

Image
Ambrose Dupris is the newest member of Balloons Over Paradise. His flight experience comes from flying in the United States, mainly in the Boise area. While his flight repertoire is not as exotic as the previous three pilots, he nonetheless has plenty of experience from flying in many different terrains. Passengers on Ambrose's flights are often treated to a "splash and dash," a landing on and floating of a lake or river within the flight path. Ambrose has over 6,500 hours of flight control. He flies the Seabreeze balloon.

Mr. Crawford,

Your flight is now reserved for 08 January 2014. Please be sure to wear natural fibers to the field as synthetic fibers can melt to your skin under the heat placed by the balloon's burners. We hope your flight allows for a wonderful view of the sunrise over the island.

Thank you for your business, and we will see you here, there, and in the air!

Attention: Samuel Whitcombe
From: Coastal Communities board of community affairs
Nation of Origin: Coastal Communities
Requested area for Hot Air Balloon tours in your nation: We would like to operate out of Cape Amaranth, near to the capital of Boardwalk Beach to attract customers, but away from the hustle and bustle of the city where there are more fields for landing.
Is weather conducive to hot air balloon flight, with gentle winds, no precipitation, and high altitude clouds or clear skies?: We have gentle prevailing winds which head inland. Very little precipitation, though the early morning hours do sometimes have fog that lifts by 9:00.
Estimated operating days per year under above described weather: We estimate about 280 days out of the year will be clear enough of fog to fly
Is retrieval of the balloon by ground chase crew feasible in this location?: Yes, 4 wheel drive may be needed in some areas
Estimated number of passengers, per year: 1800?
Are there appropriate landing sites (fields) downwind in all directions of proposed launching sites?: We are bordered by the ocean on one side. However, launch sites would always be chosen close to sea where the prevailing winds will take the flight inland. There are a number of fields and uninhabited areas inland.
Local cuisine to be served at celebration brunches: Catalina Wines is an excellent choice
Comments/Considerations: We have a number of communities similar to Cape Amaranth, which we will consider for future operations. Cape Amaranth will serve as a market test

Balloons over Paradise is pleased to open a new branch for tours in Cape Amaranth, Coastal Communities! Having reviewed your application, we believe there is significant reason to believe that hot air balloon tours will do well in this area. While we are concerned about the morning fog (most flights take place in the early morning right after sunrise), we believe there is warrant enough to operate in your area. Given the estimated operating days and passenger volume, we are planning on starting out with two balloons in Cape Amaranth, with one carrying up to four passengers per flight and the other carrying up to three. We will be conducting an international search for two heavily experienced commercial pilots, while local individuals will be utilized as ground crew. Also, we agree the idea of serving local vintages from a winery in Coastal Communities is a wise idea.

We thank you for helping us to expand our business and bring the wonder of scenic flight to new areas. We will see you here, there, and in the air!

Sincerely,
Samuel Whitcombe

Balloons over Paradise is pleased to open a new branch for tours in Victoria Harbor, Islands of Paradise! Having reviewed your application, we believe there is significant reason to believe that hot air balloon tours will do well in this area. While we are concerned about operating in an island nation (as we do not know the size of the islands), we already operate well in Costa Aluria which is also an island nation. We will search for appropriate launch sites so that our balloons are always flying inland with no chance of being carried to the ocean. Given the estimated operating days and passenger volume, we are planning on starting out with two balloons in Cape Amaranth, each carrying up to four passengers per flight. Balloons Over Paradise is disappointed to inform you that your application has been denied. While it sounds absolutely fabulous to explore the national park by air, and while there are undoubtedly quite a number of ready passengers for such a flight, it appears that conditions are not suitable for hot air balloon flights from this location. As Hot air balloons rely solely on winds to steer to appropriate landing sites, and as you have stated that there is no landing within the park, we believe it to be too risky a proposition to operate here. While you noted that there are appropriate landing sites 15 miles outside the park, this is often times a distance too great to traverse on one trip, and it would certainly be foolhardy to attempt to land within the jungle even for an emergency. Lastly, the note that retrieval of the balloon is not feasible by ground crew seals the deal as a firm "no" from us, for this location. The only way to retrieve a hot air balloon is by ground chase crew, whether at the current location or by flying on until retrieval is accessible.

We are quite intrigued about the possibilities of flying in Lacertus Fidelitas, and we think there may be room to do so in the fields near the national park. We would love to explore this and other options for flight within your nation so that we can indeed see you here, there, and in the air!

Sincerely,
Samuel Whitcombe

Balloons Over Paradise would be well pleased to open operations to fly over the Ulil rainforests. What a beautiful location that is sure to attract many passengers looking for a bird's eye perspective on the rainforest below. Soon the skies will be filled with the wonderful sights of a a daily balloon festival! And we do mean filled, as we anticipate there will be a need for several balloons to meet your passenger capacity. Our estimates generate a need for 50 balloons to serve your demand, at 245 flight days per year and two flights per day, with each balloon carrying a capacity of four passengers.

We are a bit concerned about only having a handful of landing sites, available, and so while larger capacity balloons could be used to reduce the demand, we would prefer to keep to a bit smaller of balloon size. The limited amount of landing sites demands that the balloons be highly maneuverable with the available winds, and the short of it all is that smaller balloons, like many other versions of things, are more maneuverable than larger balloons.

We will conduct an international search for qualified pilots, and we believe there are several who are willing to relocate to Ulil already. Our ground chase crews will be recruited from local individuals. However, with so many balloons in operation, it may be quite a burden on the park service to retrieve each balloon. A more feasible solution might be to contract with the park service for our ground crew operations, or for the park service to provide appropriate training to our ground crews. While all of our operations are heavily insured in case of property damage, we understand the adverse effects that careless operations could have on a sensitive area such as the rainforest. Furthermore, while our ground chase crews use rugged four wheel drive vehicles in their retrieval, the amount of traffic that they will generate could also be dangerous to the rainforest.

One solution we have in mind is for our company to construct some primitive roads which connect the six proposed landing sites to each other and to the launch headquarters. Designated roads would greatly limit the potential damage to the natural environment, and could be used by all authorized parties within Ulil for maintenance or other purposes, in addition to our ground chase retrieval crews.

Lastly, we would be greatly honored to join a partnership with the park service to help in the preservation and education of this beautiful environment.

We send our sincere gratitude to you, Mr. Jackman. We can't wait to set up operations in the Ulil Rainforests.

We will see you here, there, and in the air!

Sincerely,
Samuel Whitcombe

Balloons Over Paradise is well pleased to receive your reservation for June 30th. Your flight is scheduled for 30 June 2014 Depending on the winds present at launch time, your flight may give you spectacular views of the islands, with possible views of the sea and mountains. It is also likely that we will meander a bit over the Costa Alurian farm lands, which will provide a wonderful backdrop to our flight. As I personally pilot the Jolly Roger balloon, I hope that I can bring you many tales of great interest to you and Cletra, should you so choose. Of course, if you would like a nice quiet flight, this can be made available as well.

Please be sure to wear natural fibers such as cotton to the launch site, as synthetic fibers do have the potential to melt if placed too closely to the balloons burner system.

Your flight will conclude with a celebration brunch, and a commemorative flight certificate for each of you to remember your flight by. Cameras are certainly welcomed and encouraged, as there will be many opportunities for some great shots. Our ground chase crew will also supply some photographs as the flight plan allows.

We thank you for your reservation and will see you 30 June 2014. Until then, we will see you here, there, and in the air!

Sincerely,
Samuel Whitcombe
