Over the past few months, I have come to realise that socialism is a decadent ideology. Its core tenets - equality, co-operation and the distribution of care - are idyllic concepts that are simply not achievable in today's world. The Alexiandran state, having wallowed in the mire of left-wing policy for decades, has fallen far behind its competitors in terms of prestige and importance on the world stage. Indeed, what was once a major force to be reckoned with has become little more than a second-rate power.


In years gone by, when Alexiandra was but a struggling feudal fiefdom, warlords and bandits roamed the land in search of blood and riches. Brutal conflicts tore families apart, shattering the fledgling Alexiandran nation-state. Today, we face a similar problem. Our battlefields are corporate boardrooms, conference chambers and political constituencies - our enemies are those who seek to divide this great nation once more. These treasonous individuals walk among us, speaking of "personal liberty" and making empty promises to Alexiandra's patriots. They claim that true enlightenment can only be achieved by uniting with other socialist states in order to form some kind of supra-national entity. Such a ridiculous concept is entirely without merit.

As President of the Alexiandran Republic, I attempted to initiate schemes that would lift my nation from this mire, propelling it once more towards greatness. Alas, my efforts were in vain. I realise now that, in order to truly reclaim its lost glory, Alexiandra must be united under one universal figurehead - a political leader with the drive and ambition necessary to breathe new life into his once-mighty polity. I propose that I, Michael Winter, am that leader.

As the debacles of these past few decades have demonstrated, socialism has led to Alexiandra's steady decline. A lack of decisive leadership, along with an abundance of corruption and mindless optimism, has led to the debilitation of my beautiful homeland. I write to my people today in order to assure them of one fact - that I, their sworn protector, strive for the revival of their most sacred traditions, and the revitalisation of their most cherished customs. I aim to resurrect the glory of days gone by; to rid my domain of those who would choke and poison our national pride. Only by accepting a greater mantle of responsibility can I adequately protect my comrades from the evils that lurk within our very own borders.

It is with these goals in mind that I hereby proclaim the establishment of a new order - the Kingdom of Alexiandra. As monarch of a mighty state, I will pursue, through both diplomatic and military means, the restoration of prosperity and peace. In closing, I would encourage all states, of all ideologies and statuses, to seek the creation of meaningful relations between their realms and mine.

I swear, by gods both new and old, that I will defend my new domain to my last breath.

While we agree with you that a monarchist government is indeed the best option for Alexiandra, forgive us, but we see little authority in your self-appointed position of sovereign authority. For if any man may simply pronounce himself King, then what meaning does the esteemed position have?

"Brilliant. Fucking brilliant," President Rusakova swore as she read the communique. She was in her office, the famous "Red Room" of the Zosia, a large government complex housing the Executive Arm of the Nerotysian government. The walls were white, trimmed in thick lines of red, and all but hidden behind protraits of famous Nerotysian war heroes and thick, red-and-gold curtains. The sun bathed the room in an almost heavenly golden glow, speaking of warm weather almost unheard of in Nerotysia. One could even catch the sounds of birds - both the native Zephyrs and other birds who inhabited the city of Shynx along with humans. The weather's contrast with the mood of the people in the city was stunning. An approaching blizzard would be more appropriate.

"The Council and Parliament are meeting within the hour. Your advisors have asked for an emergency meeting in the Kupol," the aide said, a slight hint of worry cracking her professionally blank voice. Every Nerotysian was to be shaken with the news that an age-old and valued ally had embraced possibly the worst of all evils - monarchism. This alone was enough, but in the minds of almost all Nerotysians it also linked Alexiandra with another age-old but hated nation; Zammora.

"Fine. Let's go."

The room was a veritable hurricane, with people being drops of rain.

The cacaphony of voices was matched only by the orchestra of shoes as people hurried to and fro around the central mahogany table, at which several men in varyingly orderly suits sat. Most of them were talking or shouting at each other, while the rest were studying files.

President Rusakova took her seat at the head of the table, thanked her aide briskly, and was instantly barraged with voices. Loudest amongst these was the voice of Vladislav Vasnetsov, her Foreign Affairs Minister.
"We must act quickly!" he shouted. "Their monarchy is unstable, and the socialist elements are still strong. We will have no chance if we wait."

Anya shushed the rest of them, then focused on him. "Are you proposing military action?"

Vasnetsov dismissed her concerns with a wave of his hand. "I am proposing whatever it takes."

Another man, Defense Minister Boris Arshunev cleared his throat. "Please do not listen to this warmongering idiot, Madame," he said, ignoring the volcanic glare from Vasnetsov. "We need a strong reaction, but what he proposes is ridiculous."

"What are you suggesting, in that case?" Anya inquired.

"A demand. Perhaps several demands. Other diplomatic actions could also be taken," Arshunev explained.

Mikhail Grekov, Treasury Minister, interjected; "Any economic actions would be difficult. Our economies have become closely intertwined."

"We could begin the process of - erm - untangling it," Vasnetsov insisted. Anya motioned for silence.

"Issue a condemnation of Winter's actions. Refusing to recognize the government would be enough of a statement," Anya said slowly, and the hundreds of gnat-like aides buzzed into action. Something occured to her. "Who are the leading socialist Alexiandrans? Who are previous Alexiandran leaders not happy with the new system?"

"We're working on that," responded Arshunev.

"Offer them a haven." Anya rested back in her seat as if she were finished.

"That's it? No military action whatsoever?" Vasnetsov demanded. Arshunev opened his mouth for a rebuttal, but Anya held up a hand.

"I will instruct the Sixth and Seventh Fleets to begin returning home. But no more."

And so it was.

The recent actions taken by Michael Winter and his supporters in the Republic of Alexiandra are inexcusable and a threat to the well-being of the people of that great nation. Mr. Winter's claims to monarchy are not only preposterous but a direct attack on not only the freedom of the Alexiandran people, but free men and women worldwide. The destruction of such a successful and thriving socialist state is seen by the people of Nerotysia as little more than a war crime. As such, Nerotysia refuses to recognize the fake and vapid "High Kingdom" proclaimed by this madman, and will hereby exclude it from all diplomatic communications. In addition, all members of this insurrection will be arrested should they set foot on Nerotysian soil, and any and all assets they owned in Nerotysia will be rightfully confiscated. Finally, until the People's demands are met, Nerotysia's borders will be closed to Alexiandrans.

Nerotysia does not wish to punish the Alexiandran people for what a few men have done, but unfortunately it is the only way. This is an affront to the peace and safety of this world. Nerotysia will not take it lightly. We demand Mr.Winter step aside and allow the rightful rulers of Alexiandra to continue their sacred duties unobstructed. That is all.

He immediately strung a telegram together for the Alexiandrans, before an official press conference was made in response to the governmental change.

"Ah yes, the new Monarchy," said a wry thin turqoise-silk-tunic-bedecked civil servant of middling age as he looked up from a flash telegram from the omnipresent watch-office. He considered the large well-polished oval table and the collection of politicans and civil servants in front of him.

It was a colourfully-dressed ensemble that fitted perfectly with the gilded surroundings. Socialists would have called it decadent; and they would have had a point. The decadence was one reason that the Socialist party existed: for the ruling Liberal party was stuffed with closet and not-so-closet Imperialists who were firmly of the opinion that a constitutional monarchy was the best thing to hold a multi-ethnic trading nation together in perpetuity.

The Prime Minister - the only soberly dressed person at the table, and just a little rotund - looked at the turqoise creature in front of him. "Prince Kazia," the Prime Minister said to the creature, hoping that flattery might suffice, "have you not told us about something?" he asked suspiciously.

"Well," the turqoise Prince replied, "nothing much. The FPO" - Foreign Policy Office - "recommended to BCPISC" - the Briefing Council of the Cabinet Policy and Ministry of Intelligence Security Committee - "which met earlier for the first breakfast" - political power in Ausitoria was usually exercised by those who ate together first, which meant the civil servants - "that a country called Alexiandra which had decided to stop being socialist" - 'hear, hear,' interjected a few politicians while the Prime Minister frowned - "and became a Monarchy warranted a quiet fact-finding visit so we could decide whether to recognize the new government. It is in fact in the agenda somewhere."

The rivalry between the turqoise civil servant and the political Prime Minister was legendary, and the Prime Minister decided to check and disappeared in a cloud of paper. "Page 98, Annex 47C I think," the Prince said as the Prime Minister's head went under. There was so much paperwork that foreigners were always amazed at how stunningly efficient the government actually managed to be. The Prince continued, pretending to ignore the Prime Minister like usual.

"But just now it seems a socialist country has demanded the Monarch step down. The FPO suggests an immediate communique to support the right of the country to choose their own form of government and recognition of the new monarchy. It is thus possible we can influence them to ensure it is a nice full constitutional monarchy along our own Alexandrian lines."

The Prince paused for effect. "It is such a coincidence - and only a coincidence, the writing style is quite unlike our travelling monarch - that the name of Alexandria should be involved." The Ausitorian Emperor Alexander Whittingnet was away and lost somewhere, probably permanently, which cynics said was the reason why the Monarchy still existed. As a result Ausitoria had achieved not only a separation of crown from state but a separation of crown from monarch. Having a monarch who was always away made it impossible for a tyrant to rise to absolute power, and these liberals hated tyrants almost as much as they loved trade.

And thus the Prince finished. "Anyway of course if he turns out to be an absolute tyrant we will ditch him. On another note I will write a personal memo to encourage him to use the style 'King & Consul', you can't just declare yourself King. Yes I know I rose from a mere Lord, but even in these enlightened times there is something weird about jumping straight from President to King. Suppose he doesn't know which knife and fork to use?"

The Prime Minister emerged from the paperwork, having just escaped drowning. "Fair enough," he said, still wondering if there was a catch. "Oh yes, any objections from the Cabinet?"

The Cabinet shook their heads. It was always nice to find something to agree on.

In order to fulfill this obligation, I am more than willing to consider carrying out a military strike against Cavendown Island. I urge you, therefore, to issue an official apology for your unprovoked aggression. Failure to do so will result in severe repercussions. Rarely does the morning traffic fail to clog the streets of Okachenko. Not only was it a city of near five-hundred thousand, but it was located very close to the Nerotysian-Alexiandran border, where international travellers seemed to delight in causing headaches for the locals.

Normally, a lapse in this irksome cycle would be welcomed, but unfortunately today that traffic had been replaced by columns of forest-colored Zykov III main battle tanks. Shades were pulled closed and crying infants shushed as the hulking metal beasts - all emblazoned with a golden triple-swipe - poured down the streets towards the imaginary line that seemed likely to become a battleground.

The tanks were headed to makeshift positions being hastily established in the border regions. A war with Nerotysia's most trusted ally had never been predicted, and while there were a few precautionary defenses set up near the border, they were woefully few and inadequate. The strategists of this war would have to improvise their defense.
Not that they planned to be doing much defending.

The recent "royal" statement by the illegitimate militaristic dictatorship that has recently poisoned Alexiandra is seen by Nerotysia as not only a flagrant violation of international law but as a direct attack on a free people's best interests. This will not be tolerated. As much as he professes to hate "clear affronts to national pride," the Dictator of Alexiandra seems to have no respect for any such thing.

The People's Federation of Nerotysia therefore hereby pledges, in full view of all international observers, that any military action taken against Cavendown Island - or any other nation - by the fascist Mr.Winter and his supporters will be treated as a Declaration of War on Nerotysia. In addition, the People demand that Mr. Winter withdraw his most recent statement and cease pressuring smaller nations into humiliating "apologies" for crimes they did not commit.

After his sharp response to a Megalomaniacal Monarch clearly gone mad, the Prince waited until the Foreign Office had drafted a response. Everything was to be done properly, and he ensured that all six people who could stop him - namely, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Intelligence, the Permanent Secretary for Intelligence, and the Secretary to the Cabinet - had a chance to voice their objections. None did. The important question had been ducked: what should they do if a war turned into a capitalist monarch vs. communist war? For that sort of war was the sort of war where Ausitoria would have to compromise, and probably end up annoying both sides. Not a pretty idea. But if absolutely necessary, Ausitoria had two things in abundance: confidence and money. They would have little hesitation in fighting on both sides of any war.

But hopefully that could be avoided: there was a democratic island in need of reinforcements of goodwill and all democracies, capitalist or socialist, could rally around it. And the Imperial Commonwealth was good at arranging friendly surprise goodwill visits.

We here in Unodostres are greatly pleased that you have adopted the natural, divinely ordained system of governance that is monarchy. Socialism is an ineffective system that only leads to high government debts and irresponsibility among the people.

That being said, it seems to me that you intend to create a centralized autocracy which is something I would strongly recommend against. The more you squeeze someone, the more they want to escape. Our own system is a form of feudalism that gives a great deal of authority to local communities while still maintaining a distinct chain of command. The nobles of our country squabble and fight like dogs, and they are given wide latitude in what they can do. This allows for a sense of freedom among the general populace and promotes ingenuity and a good work ethic. But if one of the localities steps too far out of line, just like a dog, I can yank the chain and they go right back to behaving. Thus, we have managed to strike a healthy balance between hierarchy and liberty that has benefited all.

We are willing to share with you our knowledge of how we maintain this system and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Akkut, an ancient city of grand monuments, built on an island which rises up from the mighty Aliziri River, the ancient most part of the city saw waterfalls flowing out from beneath it and mighty torrents of water breaking and swirling around it. The great limestone and alabaster gave the entirety of Old Akkut a beautiful, shimmering white glow as the sun was beginning to set just over the Aliziri, breaking with it the warm blanket of nightfall, tucking in the archaic kingdom. Running alongside the Aliziri, Bringer of Life, was a mighty city reaching up towards the cloudless sky, shimmering though not with sunlight off anciently placed stones, but with glass and lights. Akkut had a dualistic nature, entirely ancient and entirely modern all at once, in ancient times the River had provided fertile farmland worthy of crops and promising large returns, and today the River acted as the largest power source in the city, and both the old and new were washed clean of sin or grime by its purifying waters.

Though even as the light faded further and further from the world of the living and the waking, there were still some so committed to duty that they refused to retire until the last piece of work was done. Such was the character of the Ahaleea, President of the Tribal Consultative Assembly, Her Excellency Araveem Naveel. Naveel understood well her role, having had over nine years to adjust to it, she was a slave afforded many luxuries. A slave to the People of the Akkuti, she spent long hours working to advance her peoples’ interests both domestically and abroad, often waiting until the early hours of the morning to finally give way to slumber. A slave to the S’hafedaat, or Empress, she was always at her Mistress’s beckoning, knowing that she needed the woman’s approval if she was to carry out any significant policy. After all, she was not President of Akktur- rather, she was merely the President of the Consultative Assembly, which enjoyed only the powers granted to it from the Throne of the Sun, Moon, and River. It was only by immense grace or immense kindness that the S’hafedaat agreed to permit the Assembly to govern the internal affairs of the nation largely without interference, and often she consented to foreign policy with only minor or occasional alterations.

Due in part to the S’hafedaat’s amiable nature and in part to the Ahaleea’s emphasis on duty, the Ahaleea found herself in the private outdoor chambers of the S’hafedaat at this late hour. The outdoor chambers were decorated with potted plants both large and small, and several pools and tubs, most of which were heated to preserve the warmth on chilly nights when the wind came from the water. As always, there was the quiet roar of the Aliziri in the distance, always reminding all Akktur of their ancient history and encouraging them not to turn their back to the Old Gods who commanded its waters. Standing as vigilant as vultures were no fewer than a half dozen young warrior men, each displaying proudly the colors of their Tribe and Clan, and among them twice as many beautiful young women dressed wholly in white to attend their Mistress the S’hafedaat. It seemed that the Ahaleea had stumbled across the Sovereign of All while the latter was enjoying a bath, her splendid violet eyes examined her underling, her sun kissed tanned body was hidden beneath the warm white of ass’s milk which had been scented to act as a seemingly natural perfume. Despite knowing the Ahaleea quite personally, being both coworkers and family, the S’hafedaat did not separate from tradition and greeted her in ancient custom.

“Who is so bold to approach the S’hafedaat; Descended of the Gods, Ruler of the Rivers, Mistress of the Winds, Sovereign of the Sands, and Lady Superior to All the Earth?” Her voice was soft but strong as she spoke in the rolling and melodic language of her native Akkuti Tribe, her eyes examining the woman before her with a serene glance. “Speak my child, and tell me your name.”

“It is I,” the Ahaleea responded, gliding gently to a knee and bowing low her head, “Araveen Naveel, descendant of the gods, blood of the S’hafedaats, sister of the Akkuti, and Ahaleea of the Tribal Consultative Assembly, come before you to ask for guidance on the world of the mortals and barbarians.” Her response was equally measured, and equally ancient, the Akkuti were nothing if not a people who valued their tradition, truly a feature common amongst all Akkturites, regardless of Tribal affiliation. The S’hafedaat stood, the milk of her bath gliding off her as her servants came quickly to wrap around her a fine linen robe.

“Speak freely cousin,” the S’hafedaat responded, considering her high status, Nirari was very young, not yet having known her twenty-first year- though apparently plenty old enough to plot against both parent and sibling to assure her position. Her sunbathed skin was naturally tan but nearly as dark as the Southern Tribes, and her iris was the mystical violet that was shared by all the Royal family (though it had become infinitely entwined with the S’hafedaats it was originally simply a means of confirming the linage, as it was a trait so recessive that only those of pure blood could possess it).

“Holy Cousin,” the Ahaleea said before approaching with a number of files, “the President of Alexiandra has taken it upon himself to ‘correct their failing socialist system,’ in the only way he seems to see, by declaring himself the High King of the former Republic.” The S’hafedaat, humored, gave a smile, revealing her white teeth before sighing. “Naturally, many have come forth to proclaim his bravery from the mountaintops for having the courage to fight against socialism, whilst others cry treason and tyranny. Naturally, we have thus far stayed away from the conflict, but the situation seems to be escalating rapidly to unfavorable levels.” The S’hafedaat gave a small yawn before smiling again.

“Sometimes I think our Dominion the only nation left on earth uneager to water the fruits of the field with the blood of the youth,” the S’hafedaat responded quietly, “the servants will leave us,” she announced and at once the soldiers and ladies departed for indoors, leaving the two to speak privately. “I swear to the River, my ancestor and myself, that all men would be styled prince if they held the quill, still, and indeed once they have a crown upon their brow they would proclaim themselves god. No matter, is this High King a monarch or a madman?”

“One can never be so certain with men my Sacred Cousin, though we should make effort to discover his disposition before extending total recognition. If he is reasonable, then perhaps there are trade opportunities and if not, then we have no obligation to endure his shenanigans,” the Ahaleea responded plainly, as a general rule the Dominion rarely imposed itself on the matters of others (expecting the same courtesy in return), always sought out potentially profitable relations, and most always avoid harmful and explosive relations. In this way the Dominion had prospered without having to rely on elementary violence too oft. “With your permission, I would pen him a letter, explaining our position and making a list of requests, I imagine his response to these requests will inform us plenty of his demeanor and grant us the knowledge necessary to make a more full decision.”

“Do as you wish my Cousin,” the S’hafedaat responded pleasantly, preparing to retire for the evening, “only wait until the morrow to send it, that we risk not being disturbed by a response during our slumbers. Besides, let us be in no way hurried for the sake of this supposed King. Goodnight my Cousin,” she said before departing to take refuge indoors.

The Government of Her Majesty is prepared to recognize the de facto authority of your person, however, we currently have reservations as to the recognition of your de jure authority given your recent proclamation. To be entirely frank with you good Sir, Her Majesty’s government cares little if you are styled President or High King, nor if your nation should be classified socialist or monarchist. We are above such petty differences.

However, we are concerned with the nature of your new regime. We hold this to be self-evident that one regime cannot seize power whilst another remains, and to our knowledge the Senate of Alexiandra has not yet passed approval or disapproval upon your newly claimed authorities. We would appreciate immensely if you would summon the Senate and establish, formerly, your new reign as monarch. This would demonstrate, to some extent, the legitimacy of you reign and the popularity of your proclamation. If we may be so bold, President, as to quote your own state department, “democracy is not some fleeting concept that can simply be banished at a moment's notice - it is an everlasting ideal,” we trust you have not purged from your heart this belief, and we would therefore appreciate it if you would be so kind as to outline the rights and liberties you intend to grand your subjects should the Senate demonstrate their confidence in you as High King.

Her Majesty’s Government is confident that you understand our alarm, rarely is a dramatic shift in government a harbinger of good things to come- and regardless of your intentions, it seems this case is no different if only because your declaration has seemingly brought your people to the brink of yet another declaration, the latter being one of war. War is never an appeasing possibility, Mr. President, and we are sure that you understand this as well as the S’hafedaat. We do not demand you take any of the actions outlined above, but taking such action would demonstrate to the world your sovereignty (and sanity), and would indicate to us that the new principality is one worth doing business with.

It is apparent and of certainty that whatever we choose to do, not everyone will be satisfied with that choice. I believe that to be true for it is a given that there will always be those who disagree. However, I also believe that we should be able to stand firm to our beliefs. In this letter, I would like to give my thoughts and advice to your current situation. About the demands of the Zammoran Empire, I do not believe that one must be of blue or noble blood to take on the role as King when finding his own realm. As would be the case throughout history, those who became Kings or nobles were men seen able to lead the community. So that is my opinion on that, And now to the actions taken by Nerotysia. I shudder at the very thought of that over-proud socialist nation who takes better pleasure in sticking their noses in other people's business without a good purpose more than anything else. Don't falter towards any threats these over-proud barbarians give you. As long as your people have no problem with you and are content on your government, I see no reason for people to object to your rule. For now, I believe that Diplomatic actions would be the best course to take. But if it comes to war, I would like you to know that Slavsnik will support you in any way we can. And if the Parliament won't help you, then I shall send my personal soldiers to aid in your struggles.
