Best public speakers?

Postby United Marxist Nations » Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:38 am

For the sake of clarification, putting someone on your list is not, in any way, an endorsement of that figure or their views, just an acknowledgement of their skill at public speaking.

There are, of course, different measures of skill in the field; however, one of the more used measures is use of rhetoric, and seeming to show great passion. For the record, the reason I don't give Cicero top spot is because I can't actually hear him speak, so our only sources are based on what historians said about his oratory skills.

My list of best orators. Not perfect because of a limited number of figures I've heard give orations.

1) MLK
2) Cicero
3) Adolf Hitler
4) Churchill
5) Mussolini.

Second place would have to be Cato the Elder.

I've a feeling someone's going to say Nigel Farage. Can I get my retaliation in first and say that he's the most annoying public speaker I know? Thankyou.

But this isn't "worst public speakers", so, in no particular order, the first five that come to mind are...

In his prime, Patrick Moore. (Sorry to say that I found his last decade, perhaps, of decline a little hard to bear, but his knowlege helped him hold his own regardless.)

Magnus Pike. (Yes, it appears I'm going to be UK-centric.)

Jeremy Hardy.

Alan Coren.

Eddie Mair.

(Darnit, several others came to mind, but I said I'd stop at five.)
Ceci n'est pas une griffe.

I may have gotten him confused with Cicero, though, both were famous for their oration, right?

Bill Clinton and Ronald Regan.
Clinton especially, master of his craft. Who else could talk for like an hour at the 2012 DNC where he wasn't even a nominee, and keep the crowd on their feet?
Pierre Trudeau, winston churchill

Jack Kennedy has to be somewhere in this list. Cicero was quite good as well. Can't really think of anyone else.

They are both better than Reagan in my opinion, he was just an actor reading a script. Saw Clinton making a speech on TV when he was involved in the peace process in Ireland, absolutely mesmerising.
