Tigers and Panthers aren't MBTs. MBTs are jacks of all trades, the Tiger is a heavy tank and the Panther is a medium.
A Tiger would be a real fucking neato MBT if you can find a way to make it more reliable though. Speed and armour comes next.
Start by scrapping the engine, suspension, and turret (if we're talking about a Tiger I). Obviously, no actual scrapping would take place, as this would be built new from the ground up.
The hull of either Tiger is already a fairly good shape. Tiger I might be better, but either should be workable. Chobham armor work best when hit at a perpendicular angle, so Chobham armored tanks tend to have flat slabs of armor. Either Tiger fits that description perfectly.
The suspension (especially the Tiger I's) needs to go. It's too complicated, and didn't perform particularly well on rougher terrain. Just use a modern torsion bar suspension layout. Don't forget to add side skirts.
The engine of either Tiger should be removed and thrown in the garbage. Either find and existing modern engine with about the same dimensions, or design a new engine for it. A diesel engine would be best; Tigers should roar. Whatever you do, make sure you PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN THE REAR. (World of Tanks thing, sorry)
Take a Tiger II turret and enlarge it to accommodate a 120mm gun. I think the front of the turret is rounded, so you'd need to flatten it if you want to use Chobham armor. Other than that it should be okay as is.
Now add a full suite of modern electronics.
Now go out and remind your enemies why Tigers should be feared.
or.
don't do any of that.
and produce Leopard 2 like a boss.
