Did you ever see Cross of Iron? It's follows a group WWII German soldiers in Russia, and the conflict between an absurdly idealistic officer, seeking the Iron Cross, and a cynical, yet honorable, corporal/sergeant.

Exception being if you born a Mongol on Genghis Khan's side. In which case you'll either be female and running the country while having dozens of slaves and the finest jewelry, or looting and pillaging towns all across Asia. :p

Yep I own the movie. Not bad, not great but not horrid either. I found the Officer wanting an Iron Cross to be a joke though especially since they were practically handed out during WWII. I enjoyed the movie Stalingrad a bit more though it got stupid and unbelievable near the end. I think A Bridge Too Far is still the most even handed film that I can think of in regards to the German viewpoint.

Indeed, that is my favorite scene in the movie because it really sets the tone for the Bunker.

this sounds to me like an 'if it didn't happen the way it did it couldn't have happened' kind of an assumption.

i'm not ignorant of the highly touted "pax roman...", whatever it is.
but as far as roman era european tribal conflicts are concerned this sound to me like the experiment affecting to some degree the results. the observers these conclusions are based on, were, after all, imbeded, were they not, with rome's foreign military adventurism?

i'm not saying rome was the only cause of strife in a world that would otherwise have been at peace, but i am saying, christian militancy and its resulting fanaticism WERE a reaction to rome's inequities, and that it was the influence of this fanaticism that is the direct cause of the slowing to a snails pace of technological and scientific developments in the middle ages.

Well, there's the possibility he could've done that in Athens, or (provided it exists in this hypothetical scenario) Rome itself, without a Roman Empire to stand in his way...

Europe isn't the only area from which to draw conclusions.

Mongolia - No unifying force till 12th Century, largely backward up till then.

China - Constantly invaded and broken apart, largely culturally split and with little philosophical/religious uniting force until relatively recently.

Arabian Peninsula - See the Ottoman Empire
i'm not saying rome was the only cause of strife in a world that would otherwise have been at peace, but i am saying, christian militancy and its resulting fanaticism WERE a reaction to rome's inequities, and that it was the influence of this fanaticism that is the direct cause of the slowing to a snails pace of technological and scientific developments in the middle ages.

Christian Militarism was nothing compared to many previous religions. Ever hear of a Wicker Man? Remember the Pagan Vikings? What about the concept of Jihad? Besides, Christian Militarism was largely a Catholic thing, the Byzantines went on purely secular conquests.

And the Middle Ages were far more advancedthen you give them credit for.

1st- The Late Dark Ages (c. 1270-1450 AD)- I could within the realms of possibilty singlehandedly bring about the end of the Dark Ages by myself and make Leonardo da Vinci look like an idiot.

2nd- 11,000 B.C.- Just to see if the Sphinx was built around based upon the water damage that could ahve only happened aroudn that time to the base of the Sphinx.

3rd- 1989 AD- So I could prevent myself from doing the first of many mistakes in my life.

Speaking of which, why do you think Rome fell (and I meant the Empire as a whole)?

Christianity creating a sense of the end of the world is nigh must not focus on earthly world we must focus on the after life.
Also with the east west split you had a huge city of Rome that no longer had its grain reserves of Egypt to feed its city and bribe the barbarians to leave them alone.

Eh. I disagree. They all seem too small. Religion is and was a tool. I'd say the split wasn't the start of the decline, it was already on it's way before.
