So what is the main purpose for sex then, and why is it developed?

Sexual reproduction developed as a method of reproduction that combined traits from the DNA of both parents to offer a more varied genetic selection to assist in the evolutionary process. Sex in and of itself is either something organisms are driven to do at certain times (ex. animals entering heat) or simply for pleasure, as the pleasure motivator of sex naturally leads to increased levels of sexual activity. Numerous species have sex purely for enjoyment, though humans have taken it further to also be an act of intimacy and devotion. So yes, there are still perfect reasons for same-sex couples to have sex.

Humans arent alone in that btw, there are many creatures that mate for life and fornicate as well as cuddle. Many birds, and dogs/wolves for example. As for whether thats what we call intimacy, well, I sure they ask themselves the same thing about us.
